REVIEW: REFUGE FOR FLORA is the twelfth instalment in Deanndra Hall’s contemporary, adult BLUEGRASS BRAVERY romantic suspense series, and the latest in the multi-authored POLICE AND FIRE: OPERATION ALPHA series based on characters created by author Susan Stoker. This is forty year old, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources Conservation Officer Barrett Quarles, and thirty-four year old Flora Stevens’ story line. REFUGE FOR FLORA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers
Told from third person perspective REFUGE FOR FLORA follows thirty-four year old, Flora Stevens, on the run from an abusive relationship. Arriving in western Kentucky, Flora finds shelter and a job working for eighty nine year old Mrs. Murphy, an elderly woman, whose reputation is caustic and unforgiving. Once a week, Kentucky Wildlife Resources Conservation Officer Barrett Quarles cuts Mrs. Murphy’s lawn bringing our hero up close and personal with Flora Stevens. As Flora and Barrett’s relationship begins to take hold, Flora’s past comes looking for revenge, and Barrett’s past comes looking for a second chance. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Flora and Barrett, and the potential fall-out as Flora’s whereabouts are discovered and our heroine is once again, forced to run.
Flora Stevens knows abuse first hand but in the wake of her husband’s last assault, Flora knew it was time to run, in an effort to save her own life and move on from the past. Landing in Paducah, Kentucky Flora finds the solace and friendship she needed and craves but fears her presence could bring death and destruction to everyone she know. Barrett Quarles knows a thing or two about betrayal, and in this, struggles to make sense of the life he once shared. When his latest assignment finds Barrett tracking down a group of people known to profit from the sale of exotic animals, Barrett has no idea how close he is to uncovering the truth behind Flora’s ex. Meeting Flora gives Barrett hopes for a second chance at his own happily ever after but threats from the past continue to wreak havoc on our story line couple.
The relationship between Barrett and Flora is one of immediate attraction but Flora intends to keep a low profile, as she struggles in the aftermath of what happened and why. Barrett Quarles is determined to get to know better our heroine Flora Stevens, but with it comes the threat of losing someone he loves, all over again. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several couples we have me in previous instalments: Bud and Martina, Zyan and Landee We are introduced to eighty-nine year old Mrs. Marilyn Murphy, as well as Barrett’s mother Beth Quarles, and his friend Jesse. The requisite evil has many faces.
REFUGE FOR FLORA is a story of power and control, family and relationships, secrets and lies, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and tragic; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are edgy and animated, and life most of Susan Stoker’s H/h, Barrett is a gentle a down to earth, gentle male, and our heroine is fighting to overcome a dark and dangerous past.

Deanndra Hall is a working author living in the far western end of the beautiful Bluegrass State with her husband of over 35 years and small menagerie of weird little dogs. When she’s not writing, she’s editing. When she’s doing neither of those two things, she’s having dinner with friends, spending time with family, kayaking, eating chocolate, drinking beer or moonshine, or looking for something that she put in the wrong place and can’t seem to find (which is pretty much everything she owns).
