Atlantis Redeemed Review

Atlantis Redeemed Review

Atlantis Redeemed Review is the fifth book (plus two novellas) in Alyssa Day’s Warriors of the Poseidon series. As in Atlantis Unmasked, I was prepared not to like this book as much as the earlier ones, since some of the heroes had smaller roles.  “Atlantis Redeemed” is Brennan’s story, and once again Day managed to surprise me…I loved Brennan and Tiernan.  In the previous books, we were introduced to Tiernan, an investigative reporter, and I thought then she would be an interesting character.  Knew from Brennan’s reaction then, that he was meant for Tiernan.  But I never suspected that I would love them together.  That being said, let’s move on to the story.

Brennan in the early days (two thousand years before), was a young warrior, who at the age of 19, loved to drink, and enjoy the women available to him.  A raging Poseidon punished Brennan for his cavalier behavior, and blamed him for the death of a young girl and her unborn child. Though it was unjust, as the girl refused to accept Brennan’s offer of marriage. Poseidon cursed Brennan with feeling no emotion.  To make matters worse, Poseidon told Brennan that one day he will meet his soul mate, and after all these years of no emotion, he will explode with those emotions that have been buried, and each time he and his soulmate separate, he will fail to recognize who she is.  This will go on over and over, every time he loses sight of her, he will forget her and it starts again.  Only until his soul mate dies, then he will remember her and all those emotions will remain with him forever.

Tiernan, as the investigative reporter, has been working with the Atlanteans, since Alexios helped save her, and brought her to Atlantis to meet with Prince Conlan.  Now Tiernan is trying to get information, to help destroy the vampires who are trying to take over the world, using scientific measures to force enthrallment on shifters and eventually humans.  Enthralling destroys their minds, resulting in their eventual deaths.  Tiernan also has another reason to want to expose this evil group, she lost a friend to this group, and she wants revenge.

When Brennan is forced to work with Tiernan, the attraction turns deadly, as his curse is shattered when he meets her and in the space of a few moments, 2000 years of emotions bombard him in an unbelievably torturous way. He knows that Tiernan is his soul mate, and he is able to fight and control the raging emotions enough to be in control.  Though Tiernan was scared at first, when Brennan came crashing into her room, she is a headstrong, courageous and tenacious young lady.  She being a woman with an eye for the truth…another lost Atlantean art….a Truth Teller.  Tiernan is a human lie detector, and knows when people are lying to her.  Having that ability, allowed her to calm down and give Brennan the chance to explain his over zealous reaction to her.  She quickly becomes attracted to the gorgeous sexy Brennan, and at the same time tries to help him realize that the curse was unjust and he needs to not blame himself.  Of course, she also offers to talk to Poseidon for him, once this mission is over.  Lol

Brennan and Tiernan are a terrific pairing, as Tiernan is able to deal with Brennan and his curse.  She is the only who is able to calm his emotions, but whenever she is in danger, Brennan goes into his berserker mode, that is almost impossible to control. They are both strong, and dedicated characters, and the sparks do fly explosively when they do allow their passion for one another finally connect.  During the soul-meld, Tiernan sees her future with Brennan, and backs away from him, thereby hurting him.  But eventually she realizes they will work on their future together, as she loves him, and he loves her.

The story is constantly filled with action and excitement.  Another great ending, and Poseidon does come forth again and Tiernan does try to talk to him. lol  There is lots of humor throughout, and that is fun to read. We get to see a lot of the other characters that have been part of our Warriors of Poseidon adventure…..Prince Conlan and Riley, Alexios and Grace, Alaric and Quinn (finally), Jack and Daniel with Diedre.

Excellent story, and I am ready to move on to Atlantis Betrayed….Christoph’s story.  However, I cannot wait to read Daniel’s story in Vampire in Atlantis.  Not to mention Quinn and Alaric’s story coming in May, 2012. I guess I am totally hooked.

Atlantis Unmasked Review

Atlantis Unmasked Review

Atlantis Unmasked Review is on the fourth book in Alyssa Day’s Warriors of the Poseidon series. Going into this book, I had not expected this story to be as enjoyable as the previou

s three books in this series.  However, I was totally surprised…as I ended up really loving this book.  “Atlantis Unmasked” is the story of Alexios and Grace, and wheras, this was the same concept of  the Warriors fighting off the vampires, finding the jewels that will save Atlantis, the love between the them is different then previously.

This book starts off with lots of action, and Alexios meets up again with Grace, the fearless leader of the rebel forces, against the vampires and their allies. Grace is a friend of Quinn, whom we really do not see in this book.

What I really enjoyed very much in this story was that we also get to see Riley have her baby, as Alexios and his Atlantis mates are quickly summoned home for the birth of the royal heir, Prince Aidan.  Very nice to see most of them together, the warriors and their women. It does help make them appear as your family.

Alexios, was the battle scarred Atlantean, who was one of Prince Conlan’s must trusted and loyal warriors. He too, was tortured physically and mentally by Anubis, the evil goddess of Death. Alexios is drawn so powerfully to Grace, but fears opening himself up to the pain of love and loss, as he has taken up celibacy as a way to cleanse his soul, but that will change when he falls for Grace.  Alexios is also concerned about hurting Grace, if his dark side should come through.  Though he tries to avoid going anywhere near Grace, he has been forced to go back and work with Grace in training the rebel recruits, and to steal the Vampire’s Bane from the possession of the most powerful vampire yet (Vonos).

Grace, besides being a kick-ass warrior, is also a descendant of Diana (The Goddess of the Hunt). Like Diana, Grace uses her bow and arrow as her weapon of choice, and her aim is always perfect.  Once Alexios sees Grace again, he is lost.  She is it for him, and he loves that is not only beautiful, but an amazing warrior.  This is where this book is totally different then the first three.  Alexios, loved everything about Grace, as much as he worried about her, and wanted to always protect her….he knew she was a warrior..he could not change her.  So he loved her enough to accept what she was, and let her be what she was meant to be.  I loved how Grace was a great tough heroine, with a soft sand funny side, and how Alexios did not try to change her, or force her to do things his way.  They were a team, and they were better for it.

I really enjoyed their romance: the way Grace was fighting off her feelings for Alexios, because she feared there was no future, since he would live forever and she as a human would grow old and die.  Her love for him showed when she looked at him, not caring about his half scarred face, just loving him as he was. His total and unconditional love for her, his ability to reason, keep his cool, and willingness to force himself to allow her space, made him perfect for her.

The overall story was very exciting, and it was nice to see Bastien, Kat and Ethan again.  The Fae came into this story, when the Seelie High Court Prince Rhys arrives to ask Grace to arrange a meeting between him and Atlantis.  Both Alaric and Alexios are concerned because the Fae cannot be ignored.  The Fae want get involved and work out an alliance between them and Atlantis, because the vampires were trying to take over the world, and without humans and shifters, the balance of power would be changed…this of course adversely affects the Fae.  Also, Prince Rhys has his own agenda.

Vonos is the villain of this book, as is Anubis.  The fight to find the jewel…Vampire’s Bane, both Alexios and Grace, fighting first Vonos, then Anubis, was good.  The ending has an exciting climax, but only time will tell what effect it really had.

Alexios and Grace were fun characters to read about, as well as some hilarious moments throughout.  Grace meeting her descendant, Diana near the end has a number of surprises.  Another interesting tidbit, we learn more about the question as to what happens to the human women that mate with the warriors.  It does answer some questions.

I really enjoyed this book, as it took me totally by surprise.  Alexios was way better then I ever expected him to be.  On to Atlantis Redeemed….Brennan & Tiernan.

Atlantis Unleashed Review

Atlantis Unleashed Review

Atlantis Unleashed Review is from the third book in Alyssa Day’s Warriors of the Poseidon series.  At the end of Atlantis Awakening, Justice, after keeping the truth of his birth a secret all his life, offered his life or his soul to Anubisa to save his brother, Ven & Erin, as well Conlan & Riley, and their unborn child.  “Atlantis Unleshed” is Justice’s story.

The book picks up with the warriors trying to find Justice, who has been imprisoned in the Void by Anubis for four months. Justice, who is a fierce Atlantean warrior, has been dreaming of a beautiful woman, while in imprisonment.  It is this vision, that keeps him sane throughout whatever torture Anubis has done to him, as well as his inner conflict, of having  two souls…Atlantean & Nereid.  Justice is constantly fighting off the Nereid soul, who wants total control.  Just about when he feels he is losing his sanity, he attempts an escape from the Void.

Keely McDermott is a well known feisty archaeologist. What Keeley has kept secret to everyone, is her ability to touch objects, and be able to read and feel everything about it. By touching these objects, it triggers events related to the object, and those visions take its toll on Keeley.   As a child, Keeley was treated by her own family as being different, and learned to hide her ability, so people would not think she was strange.  Therefore, she never had the chance to be able to talk about her gift, or to find out just what she was, until Atlantis came looking for her. Conlan and his team knew Keeley was an object reader, and they needed her to help them.   Keeley, years before during one of her expeditions, found a fish carving, which gave her a vision of a beautiful warrior, with blue black hair.  She dreamed of this warrior for years.

Almost the minute Keeley arrives in Atlantis, she sees the image of Justice trying to escape the Void through a portal.  Justice sees Keeley, and recognizes that she is the woman who has kept him sane.  He sees no one else, as he fights his insanity to get through the Void to Keeley. Justice is a pretty scary site for Keeley, as he comes through and grabs her away.

But Keeley, though scared at times, was the perfect person for the damaged Justice.  She was a strong character, has courage, compassion, and great sense of humor.  Once she was able to see into Justice’s mind, as well as Justice into her mind (for her bad childhood), Keeley was the one who would mend Justice back together.  Despite her own difficulties, she was able to calm him, and pull him out of his insanity. In time, Keeley was the only one, who could heal him and blend his two souls together.  When Justice looked at Keeley, he could feel her light to take him out of his darkness.

Loved their romance, even early on, when they were in the cave unable to get out, and she was scared.  Things lighten a bit when he magically brought her pancakes to eat.  Loved his intense love for her, the way he clung to his sanity for her sake, to protect Keeley in fighting off the more dangerous Neirid.. made it more intense.  Though at times, he was bit arrogant, as it seems all of the warriors are in the beginning. Amazing how they think women, upon knowing them for all of 2 minutes, should do as they say.  Lol  But Keeley was his savior, especially when she got to know Justice better, and knew how to handle him. She brought him out of this dark place…with her love for him.

Until the end of Atlantis Awakening, I really did not pay attention too much attention to Justice…but “Atlantis Unleashed” does him justice.  J   The last 1/3 of the book was very exciting, as Justice (& Neried) worked with Keeley to find the Star of Artemis, which was needed to add to the Trident.  Something that is necessary for Atlantis to eventually rise.  Keeley in one of her visions told Conlan and Ven, they cannot try to bring Atlantis up, unless they get all the jewels of Trident, otherwise Atlantis will be destroyed.  Another part of the story I really enjoyed, was Keeley falling for the little orphaned girl, whom she met in the village in South America, where they had to help them fight off the vampires.

I really enjoyed this book, and loved Justice and Keeley together.  At this point, I still like Erin the best of the heroines, though I do like Riley, Kat and Keeley.  Even though we have to wait for a bit to have Quinn’s story, I think she just might be the best one yet, as Day keeps teasing us with Alaric and Quinn.  But with the new girl introduced in this story…Tiernan, who based on Brennan acting badly in front her, as well as Grace, whom Alexios is constantly thinking of, are more heroines to come.  I hope you enjoyed my Atlantis Unleashed Review, on to the next book, Atlantis Unmasked.

Atlantis Awakening

Atlantis Awakening

Atlantis Awakening is the second book of Alyssa Day’s Warriors of the Poseidon. This review will be mostly about the second book, but prior to “Atlantis Awakening”, Day wrote a novella, which follows “Atlantis Rising”. With that in mind, I will start with a brief review of that story, and then go directly to the full book.

Atlantis Awakening

Atlantis Awakening is Ven’s book, and he is one of the warriors I loved the most, as the story of Warriors of the Poseidon began. Ven, the King’s Vengeance and second in line to the throne, was sent to make an alliance with the witches to help defeat the vampires. Lord Vengeance was to meet Erin Connors, who represented the Seattle Circle of Lights (a coven of witches), to work out the arrangement in forming an alliance together. Ven was immediately attracted to Erin when she walked into the bar that was their meeting place, as he was overwhelmed by his desire for her. Erin is a powerful young witch, who can call powerful magic at her will, but is afraid to use some of her magic, as she was told by her superiors that it was against the rules. Erin is a perfect match for Ven, and makes a great heroine. I really loved Ven & Erin together, as their romance was just wonderful to watch.
Erin has spent years ten years planning her revenge against the evil vampire Caligula. She lost her entire family to Caligula, and has recently learned that her sister Deirdre is still alive. Erin asks Ven for help in saving her sister, and avenging her family’s death. But Deirdre is now a vampire, and has been tortured by Caligula all those years. Ven knows that Caligula is also after Erin, and because he fears for her safety, he agrees to help her, but whisks her off to Atlantis. There, Erin learns she has powers she never even suspected. She is a gem singer, which is a rare and has been lost to Atlantis for centuries. With her song and the jewels in the Temple of Nereid, Erin manages to use her newfound powers to heal Riley and her unborn child. But it is only temporarily, as Riley’s body is rejecting her pregnancy, and to keep them both safe, they have to find a lost ruby called the Nereid’s heart. Ven, knowing that without this jewel, Riley and her unborn child will die, agrees to take Erin back and look for the ancient ruby, which is hidden deep within Caligula’s lair, and they must also defeat Caligula to save themselves.
This was a great story, with adventure, excitement and surprises, but it was the hot and sexy romance between Ven and Erin, which was blended nicely into the story, that made this even better. Using the gem-singer theme, where the gems sing to Erin, and she sings with all those passions spiraling around them, or against the evil, was so well done. Their love for one another, and their soul-melding was, as I said before great. The ending was exciting, filled with emotion, action, and surprise twists, as well as a sort of cliffhanger. You are left open to find out what happens to Alaric, Quinn, Drakos, Justice, and Diedre. Another open item is the return of evil, and how this will end.

What was also great about this book was to be able to see most of the characters you loved from the first book. Conlan & Riley, and their problems with the baby. Alaric and Quinn, who continue to play a major part in the storylines, but most certainly will not be put together until the end of this storyline. Justice becomes more interesting, and his sacrifice at the end to help Ven and Erin, makes him even more important. Other secondary characters that we can look forward to seeing how their story will play out, are the remaining warriors, Drakos (Daniel), and Jack (the were-tiger). I really enjoyed Ven and Erin’s story, and this was a great follow up to “Atlantis Rising”.

“Wild Hearts ”- Book 1.5
This novella is Bastien’s story. Prince Conlan (our wonderful hero in Atlantis Rising), sends Bastien to Miami to work with a group of shape shifters. There he meets up with Kat Fiero, a half human and half shape shifter, who is a park ranger. This is not the first time, Bastien has met Kat, as he helped save her two years ago from vampires. But Bastien has not forgotten the beautiful Kat. Their meeting was short, but left a mark on both of them. Kat Fiero is not happy, as she feels cursed with a gift, to be able spread calm and peace around her or to individuals, but she also feels that it prevents her from shifting into her own cat. Ethan is the Alpha of Kat’s pack, and his girlfriend Fallon hates her.

Kat is the one who must work with Bastien, as he will share her house with her. She automatically feels the attraction again, but does not want to get hurt, as she thinks that Bastien does not feel the same. Bastien, fought off his attraction before, as he knows that Poseidon has long ago forbidden relationships between the Warriors and shape shifters. Justice and Denal, two warriors you met in the first book, are also in this book, helping Bastien. The warriors are trying to stop the shape shifters from an alliance with the vampires, and prove to Ethan that the vampires are the ones behind the recent death of shape shifters.

Though it is a short story, and a fast read, the romance of Bastien and Kat is very good. It is fun to watch them give into their feelings (with some hot scenes), and to see both of them discover that they are soul mates. The story is also good, as Ethan realizes that there is a traitor in his pack, but it is Kat, who uses her power to finally remove her curse, to help Bastien at the end. “Wild Hearts” is part of the anthology “Wild Thing”. It is well worth reading this short story.

Shifters LadyBook 2.5
Shifters Lady” is the second and last novella by Day for Warriors of the Atlantis. This story is about Marie, whom you learn more about in “Atlantis Awakening”. Marie is Bastien’s sister, and is the first maiden of the temple of Nereid. On a visit to Miami, she meets the Alpha shape shifter, Ethan. When Ethan lays eyes on her, he is lost. Just hearing her voice, her laugh, looking at her beauty, her dark hair,,causes his panther to go wild. So of course, he runs away. Lol But Bastien is called away on a mission, and Kat has to go to work as a park ranger, so Ethan has to watch over Marie. You can’t help like Marie, she is a nice person, sweet, a loyal to Atlantean, and has some powers of her own.

Ethan must fight to save his pack against a threat to his leadership, as well as his and Marie’s life. Kat does come back, and brings the were-tiger Jack to help. But the romance and soul-meld between Marie and Ethan is the best part of the story. Some funny scenes, where they are making love, and she loses control of her powers, and the rain comes pouring through the room….Cute.

That being said, this was a very short story. It was nice, but it was very quick, and the end seemed a bit rushed. A lot was left open, even what happens to Ethan and Marie, as they know Poseidon will not allow shape shifters in Atlantis. Marie has to go back to Atlantis soon, to resume her duties in the temple. My guess, somewhere in the future, allowances will be made to allow them (Bastien/Kat-Marie/Ethan) to come home.

“Atlantis Unleashed” is the next book of this series, and it’s Justice’s story.

Atlantis Rising

 Atlantis Rising

Atlantis Rising by Alyssa Day is the first book of the Warriors of Poseidon series, which is now 7 books (plus 2 novellas), with #8 coming in May, 2012. The interesting thing about this series is that I had quite a few people telling me this series was a must read, and that Alyssa Day was a great and fun writer. People make recommendations, but this seemed unanimous, especially given by different friends.

Atlantis Rising starts off introducing Conlan, the prince of Atlantis, who just returned after 7 years of imprisonment and torture. Conlan is the leader of the Warriors of Poseidon, who must protect mankind against vampires and other evil.

To give you a better understanding of how Atlantis, which supposedly sunk, but is still there hidden to all; this is an explanation direct from Alyssa Day’s site:
It was the time before the Cataclysm, forced upon Atlanteans by the greed of humanity. In Poseidon’s Temple, in the soul of the seven isles of Atlantis, a group of warriors met with the sea god’s high priest. He divided them into seven groups of seven and assigned each a sacred duty and an object of power – a magic-imbued gemstone. Some were to sink to the bottom of the world, shielded from prying eyes and envious lusts by the waters that nurtured them. Others were to join the lands of humans at assigned locations – all high grounds that would protect the lineage in the event of severe flooding.

All would wait. And watch. And protect.

And serve as first warning on the eve of humanity’s destruction.

Then, and only then, Atlantis would rise. For they were the Warriors of Poseidon, and the mark of the Trident they bore served as witness to their sacred duty to safeguard mankind.
Conlan, returning just in time for him to be shortly elevated to King of Atlantis, but first he must take his 7 warriors, and the high priest to help retrieve the stolen Trident, a powerful weapon, which he must reclaim to be able to ascend the throne. The stolen Trident is in the hands of a group of dissenting Atlanteans, as well as vampires (led by the evil Goddess of Death-Anubisa), who plan on the destruction of humanity. Conlan, still under the duress of his torture by Anubisa, runs ahead of his warriors to earth, where he is pulled by a mind link to a human female in trouble. Confused, as only Atlanteans should be able to link to each other, Conlan desperately runs to the rescue of this female, as he is unable to resist the pull.

Enter Riley Dawson, the female in trouble, being attacked by 3 vampires. Riley is an empath, and she also feels the mind link to Conlan. They are drawn to each other, as each was trying to fight off the intense desire felt for each other. Riley immediately can feel Conlon’s soul, and his torture, making her more sympathetic to him. Conlon, not having felt such emotions in his lifetime (11,000 years), is torn for his desire for this human empath, which in his world is called ‘Aknasha”, unheard of for Atlanteans for thousands of years. After he rescues Riley, the remaining warriors arrive, and the high priest, Alaric, considers Riley to be dangerous. She can read all of the warrior’s minds, if she tried. Riley, just wants to home, and try to forget this strange man, who saved her. Riley is a social worker, who hides that she is an empath. She has a sister (Quinn), who most certainly will come into play in a later book, as she is drawn to Alaric. Quinn, unbeknownst to Riley, leads a group of were-wolves (and were-tiger) to fight a revolution against the vampires, who threaten to take over their world.

Conlan, despite Alaric’s attempt to stop him, plans to takes Riley and bring her back to Atlantis to protect her, as well as allow him to study her. However, they must first retrieve the stolen Trident. While planning their mission to retrieve the Trident, all the warriors stay at Riley’s house.

This is a fun story, to be able to watch Conlan and Riley discover each other, and the intensity of their feelings. Only Riley seems to be able to heal Conlan’s broken soul, and as the story unfolds, Conlan, an honorable and loyal warrior to Poseidon, cannot lose Riley, no matter what the cost will be. Riley is a great heroine, as she is street savvy, spunky, brave, and speaks her mind openly. In time, the other warriors come to care about Riley, especially for her bravery in helping save them. She is perfect for Conlan, and their love for each grows with each passing day. To watch them “soul-meld” is amazing.

The mission to retrieve the stolen Trident, was exciting. It was just great to watch Riley with the other warriors, and how she wins them all over. I loved her attitude yelling to the god Poseidon to save his warriors….so funny. But as Alaric begins to suspect, there is more to Riley, then even they understand. She and Conlan together fight the evil Anubisa to the end. Atlantis Rising was a great book, great romance, excitement and fun all the way. Well done Alyssa Day…I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Do You Know…Paul Marron?

Paul Marron’s face is very familiar to many readers of paranormal romance novels, and his most recent cover is this week’s new release….LOTHAIRE by Kresley Cole.

There is very little personal information on the web regarding Paul Marron. I have contacted his people, but they say he likes to keep a low profile. I will give it one more try.

For the fans of Kresley Cole’s IMMORTALS AFTER DARK series, Paul is the cover model for her latest release LOTHAIRE.

And for those of you lucky enough, to be able to visit one of Kresley’s book signings, Paul has been a frequent guest at the book stores, alongside Kresley.

>

Among Paul’s many covers, some of our favorites include:
JR Ward: Lover Avenged
Christine Dodd: Into The Shadow
Lora Leigh: Nauti Intentions
Kresley Cole: Lothaire and Kiss of the Demon King
Shelley Laurenston: The Mane Attraction
Sherrilyn Kenyon: Night Embrace
Sherrilyn Kenyon as Kinley MacGregor: Darkness Within
Susan Sizemore: Primal Instincts
Kresley Cole: Dark Desires After Dusk
JR Ward: Envy
I found this video on youtube, and hopefully this can better explain Paul’s career than any of the information that I have found on the net.

At a reported 6ft tall and the body of a Greek god, Paul is the epitome of the supernatural shape-shifter, vampire and highland warrior. And those eyes…..the perfect predator.

According to Paul’s website: And this is under ‘ABOUT ME’

“I enjoy fashion and find it interesting. Moreover, just as fashion trends are constantly evolving fashion can likewise be manipulated to reflect your ever-changing mood. While utilizing fashion as an expression of my individuality, I endeavor to portray a unique representation of how a man could create his signature ‘look’ as influenced by both up and coming and established designers. Whether it be on the runway or as my regular go-to-look, I strive to become a prime physical, mental and genetic being that may inspire others to develop and evolve”

Paul’s many fashion campaigns include 19th Street, Alagio, Casio, Todd Shelton and his very ‘popular’ underwear campaign for UNDERGEAR.

I had previously contacted Paul’s ‘people’ requesting a written interview, but they stated that Paul prefers to keep a low profile. With the promotion of Kresley Cole’s LOTHAIRE, perhaps we can convince Paul for a small peek into his life. *fingers crossed*

Kelley Armstrong Interview

Kelley Armstrong Interview

With the release of her Women of the Otherworld series book HIDDEN December 31, 2011 and THIRTEEN in July 2012, we are pleased to present our interview with Kelley.

BIOGRAPHY:

YOB: 1968
Birthplace: Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
Currently Resides: Southwestern Ontario, Canada
Marital Status: Married
Children: 3
Education: graduated from UWO (University of Western Ontario) with a degree in psychology
-diploma in computer programming from Fanshawe, London Ontario

S&B: Hi Kelley and welcome. Thank you very much for taking the time with our interview.

S&B: Please tell our members as little bit about yourself and ONE thing (about yourself) that none of your fans would know about! There is not a lot of ‘accurate’ information about Kelley Armstrong on the web.

KA: I’m the author of the “Women of the Otherworld” paranormal suspense series and “Darkest Powers/Darkness Rising” young adult urban fantasy series, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. I grew up in Southwestern Ontario, where I still live with my family. I’m a former computer programmer, but I have escaped my corporate cubicle and hope never to return.

As for something about myself that my readers don’t know, by this point, that’d be really tough, mostly because I’ve had similar questions asked often enough that everything of mild interest is already out there J So I’d need to resort to the random and mundane, like “My favourite vegetable is asparagus.”

S&B: You are probably asked this question, with every interview, but the answer is always of interest to our members. How and why did you become a writer? Who or what was your inspiration into the field of writing?

KA: I’ve been writing since childhood. I was an early reader and very quickly wanted to tell my own stories. In my twenties I started working on novels, and would sporadically send out query letters and sample chapters, but never got anything more than a form letter rejection. So I gave up and concentrated on improving. In 1999, I sold Bitten, which became my first published novel, but wasn’t my first novel.

I think what inspired me was the opportunity to tell my own stories. As a child, I started writing because I loved reading, and writing meant I could make up the stories I wanted to hear. Part of that still holds true today…although I’m no longer the only one reading them!

S&B: Describe a ‘typical day’ for Kelley Armstrong. Do you have a routine that you follow? Are there specific things that you do to get the creative juices flowing?

KA: A typical writing day starts at about 5:30. I work until I get my kids up, then send them off on the bus at 7:30. I usually write most of the morning and into the early afternoon, then spend the rest of the afternoon doing business stuff. I stop when the kids return…or try to, if my schedule allows.

If I’m not travelling I do most of my writing in my office, which is comfortable, but not too comfortable. For me it has to be an efficient work environment where I can work without distractions. So it’s in the basement, where it’s quiet and there isn’t a window or anything to drag my attention out of the story.

WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD SERIES

S&B: The Women of the Otherworld Series, has such vibrant, funny and independent women…..Elena, Hope, Paige, Jaime, Eve and now Savannah.

a) Are any of these women, compilations or characterizations of ‘real’ women?

b) Do you consider yourself, similar in nature or attitude, to one of your female characters? Male characters?

c) What inspired you to write the Women of the Otherworld series?

KA: All my characters have a trait or two in common with me. That just makes them easier to write. With Elena, she’s my age, from my geographic area, with my education level, etc, which made it easy for me to get into her head as my first narrator. Paige and I share a common interest in computers (I was a programmer) so I could easily write that part of her life and personality. Eve and I both have daughters around the same age, so that part of her character came naturally. But no character (primary or secondary) is actually modelled after myself or anyone I know. They’re all a collection of traits from many sources.

Elena is closest to me in what I call the “socio-economic factors.” Same age, same educational background, similar careers (writing), grew up in the same geographic region… That made it easier for me. After that I branched out more. Personality-wise, though? We have some traits in common, but not a lot.

The inspiration for Bitten came from an X-Files episode. I enjoyed the show, but I didn’t like their portrayal of werewolves and wrote a short story about a female werewolf of the type I preferred, which I later turned into Bitten.

S&B: The Men of the Otherworld anthology, reveals plenty of background information regarding the early years with Jeremy, Clay and Malcolm, as well as some of the other pack members. Was it difficult to write about Jeremy’s relationship with Malcolm? Have you considered writing a story about Jeremy and Malcolm-the early years?

KA: I knew their backstories while writing Bitten, so these were easy to write. At one point, I’d written a short story from Jeremy’s point of view, about Malcolm, but it didn’t really add anything to either character, so I put it aside and have no idea where it is now!

S&B: Karl Marsten, was originally one of the ‘bad guys’ in the earlier novels, but you have ‘redeemed’ his character, with a mate (Hope Adams) and a child (on the way). What was your decision to pull Karl from the ‘dark side’ or had you planned to redirect his pathway from the onset?

KA: He was supposed to die in Bitten—at first near the beginning, then at the end. But I decided he was a character I could do a lot more with, so I kept him, though it was 6 books before I found another spot for him.

S&B: Jaime Vegas is one of the most intriguing women in your series. Independent, headstrong and sexually sure of herself, yet you paired her with Jeremy Danvers, a quiet, reclusive, reluctant alpha. The match is perfect. Their chemistry was explosive in the novel, No Humans Involved. Tell us something about your decision to put together this couple.

KA: What’s important to me is that a character chooses the partner who is right for her. While Jeremy and Jaime are less compatible on the surface than my other couples, they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses well.

S&B: Kristof Nast, Eve Levine and Savannah. In the anthology, Tales of the Otherworld, the novella Bewitched, tells the story of Kristof and Eve’s relationship. It was difficult to read about the Nast family control and interference in the relationship between Kristof and Eve, especially, knowing that Kristof was never aware of his only daughter. Many women, in today’s world, still suffer rejection by their lover’s and family for similar reasons. Was it difficult to write this storyline? What was your inspiration for this story?

KA: I think the thing that makes difficult backstories easy to write is that I know that things turn out well eventually 🙂 I can write the painful parts and feel the character’s pain, but I can also look forward and know it’ll be okay—and know that readers already know this as they’re reading the backstory. As for my inspiration for this one, it’s the same as with the werewolf ones—I already knew Eve’s whole story when I first created her character.

S&B: Clay, Elena, Jeremy, Antonio and Nick are some of the more popular characters in the Otherworld series. All werewolves, all the time :-). You wrote a small online story regarding Nick and his encounter with a werewolf stalker, and have revealed a small amount of information regarding Nick’s conception and Antonio’s first love. Why have you never written a novella regarding Nick’s parents? Have you considered writing a love story for Nick?

KA: Writing that novella would be harder, because I know it didn’t end well. It’s still painful for Antonio and there’s no way to “fix” that for him now. As for Nick, he’s not interested in a long-term partner right now 🙂

S&B: Speaking of love stories, you have said that you find it difficult to write sex scenes….that you do not write erotica. Do you consider sex scenes necessary in adult story lines? Comments?

KA: As an adult, I like to read stories with a romantic subplot. So when I write, that’s what comes naturally. The erotic component varies with the characters–in keeping with what I imagine for them. They aren’t necessary for every character or plot line.

S&B: Savannah and Adam….Spellbound….finally. Their ‘relationship’ throughout the series has been fraught with so much angst: Adam oblivious to Savannah’s feelings: Savannah’s inability to express herself to the man she has been in love with for so many years. Why did you wait so long, to write a love story involving Adam and Savannah? Had you planned on the Adam/Savannah pairing from the beginning, when the characters first me in Stolen? Will we see the culmination of this long awaited match with your final book in the Otherworld series?

KA: I’ve never been completely certain where this was leading. I’ve allowed the characters to develop and see where it goes. The age difference really is a big issue. It helps that Adam isn’t exactly “old” for his age, maturity-wise, but Savannah needs to do some maturing herself to close that gap. Whether that happens…remains to be seen!

S&B: You said recently your goal was to eventually end the series with Savannah. Why end with Savannah and not the werewolves, who were your original characters?

KA: I’d always planned to cap the series with a Savannah trilogy. I chose her because she’d grown up in the series and is the most connected to all the other narrators. Elena and the others will be in the final book.

S&B: The Otherworld Series, will soon be coming to a close, but you have said, that you will continue to write some short stories, anthologies, novellas and compilations of some of your previous online stories and e-reads. HIDDEN (release date December 2011) will be your next novella in the Otherworld series. What can we expect from Elena, Clay and the twins? Jeremy and the rest of the pack?

KA: I just finished an Elena/Clay story and I’m working on a Jaime/Jeremy one. There will be more to come as I see what holes I’ve left in the series.

S&B: You had introduced several potential new storylines with the revelation of Noah, Reese and the Russian werewolves in Frostbitten. Now that the series is drawing to a close, there does not appear to be any possibility of their stories. Will you write a future novella involving the young adult werewolves?

KA: I have a Reese story planned, and there’s a Nick/Noah/Reese one coming out in an anthology next year. Plus there’s always the possibility of a future novel, if an idea strikes and won’t go away.

S&B: WE have heard that your final installment in the Otherworld series is titled Thirteen and is to be released July 2012. What is the significance of the title “Thirteen?” And will there be a reunion in Thirteen of all of our favorite characters, say perhaps, at a wedding? 🙂

KA: It’s book 13 in the series, so we decided on that as a title. It’s different enough to help readers realize this is a significant book, not just the next in the series. All the characters do return in it.

NADIA STAFFORD SERIES

S&B: How did you come up with a complex character like Nadia Stafford?

KA: I’m always looking for a challenge in characters–creating one who isn’t necessarily the obvious, lovable heroine. That is indeed divisive for readers, though, so I always know I’m taking a risk. But I’m not really interested in the easy heroines. With Nadia, I wanted to develop a character who could reasonably be a hit woman, which definitely isn’t easy!

S&B: The tension in Nadia and Jack’s relationship is sometimes palpable, and can keep the reader frustrated, banging our heads against the wall, asking ….come on? Comments? (smiles)

KA: No comment 🙂

S&B: You have said, that the Nadia Stafford series will end with the third novel. Will the reader see the relationship between Nadia and Jack into fruition? Did you ever consider Quinn as Nadia’s main man?

KA: Nadia’s choice will depend on which one provides more of what she needs. Which isn’t the answer you wanted, is it?

S&B: Will you give us any information about your third and last installment in the Nadia Stafford series? Have you chosen a title?

KA: I’m at the stage of discussing it with my publisher. I’d had some thoughts of just doing an ebook original on my own, but…they’d rather I didn’t go that route. So it’s under discussion and hopefully we can come to an agreement, so there will be a third Nadia in the near future.

THE DARKEST POWERS/DARKNESS RISING SERIES

S&B: You have written both adult contemporary and young adult story lines. Which type of ‘genre’ is more difficult for you to write? What are the different guidelines before a YA novel crosses the line into an adult novel?

KA: The only real difference is the age of the characters. However, while I cover a lot of narrator ages in my adult series, teens ARE a lot different. There’s the language of course—making the characters sound like teens. But the bigger issue is, well, the issues. When I’m writing adults, whether they’re 25 or 45, they’re dealing with a similar set of issues (jobs, finances, marriage & children) Teens are at a different place in their lives and the characters need to reflect that.

S&B: Is the marketing strategy any different for your YA books than for your adult series?

KA: Marketing to teens is a little different, but with YA, a decent portion of the audience is adult, so the marketing of the series overall doesn’t change significantly. I’m just more careful not to “forget” the teen component of the audience. For example, teens are more likely to be on Facebook than Twitter, so I make sure all the YA Twitter announcements are duplicated on the FB page. I also had a separate site done for the YA. All the books—including the YA—are on my main site, but I’m careful about not wanting to sound like I’m pushing my adult books on my younger teen audience. So those books have a separate site, too (www.DarkestPowers.com) which is the one the publisher uses in marketing.

S&B: The character of Maya is adopted. You have handled the situation with grace and the portrayal of her adoptive family is a pleasure to read. So many writers have chosen to manipulate the storylines of adoptions with abuse and neglect. What was your mitigating factor in writing the adoption storyline into the novel? Did you research adoptions before writing this series?

KA: Having her be adopted solved a few problems with her backstory. I can’t say too much about that, because it would be a major spoiler for those who haven’t read the book, but let’s just say that if these were her birth parents, they’d be responsible for something that was done to her, and that would have added a layer of conflict that I already dealt with in the Darkest Powers trilogy, with Chloe. Here, I wanted to avoid that. I also wanted to show a solid, loving adoptive family. Growing up, all the kids I knew who were adopted had good experiences. I don’t see enough of that in fiction. For research, I had to look into a few issues with Native adoption, but otherwise, I went with what I’ve seen with adopted friends.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

S&B: You have said that you are currently writing a NEW adult series (with supernatural elements) to be released following the closure of the Otherworld series. Will you give us any hints as to the premise or the supernatural beings involved with the series? Are the main characters strong, independent women, similar to your other series?

KA: It’s called the Omens & Shadows series and will begin in 2013. I haven’t said a lot about it so far—I know readers are still focused on the Otherworld series. It’s almost a cross between the Otherworld and my Nadia Stafford books, which means the plots are more heavily mystery, but unlike Nadia, there are some paranormal elements. Lighter elements, though—omens, portents, second sight and Celtic folklore rather than werewolves and witches.

S&B: What other books are you currently working on? Have you considered co-authoring a book or series?

KA: I’m trying middle grade next, having recently sold a Norse-myth-based trilogy that’ll be co-written with Melissa Marr.

************************************

I had the recent privilege of meeting Kelley Armstrong at a reading and book signing. Several in attendance were able to ask questions, and I am happy to say, that I was able to ask a couple of questions. Following are some of the questions and answers during the open forum at the book store. (and yes, those are MY books she is signing..lol)

Question: Regarding Kelley’s graphic novel BECOMING, the novel explaining Elena’s transformation into a werewolf. Will she ever do a written novel?

KA: NO!! The story would be too painful and too much angst.

Question: Why is Kelley ending her Women of the Otherworld series?

KA: The series is going on hiatus. Savannah is now an adult.

Question: Regarding turning one of her series into a television serial.

KA: She would love to have one of her series made into a movie or television show. Her books would reach a broader audience, but it is a very long process.

Question: Regarding her choice of title for her last Otherworld book-THIRTEEN .

KA: The number 13 is suspicious, different and most of all, she kept calling it Book Thirteen in the Women of the Otherworld novels.

Question: Regarding the Russian werewolves who first appeared in FROSTBITTEN.

KA: The Russian werewolves may make an appearance in a short-story in THIRTEEN.

Question: Favorite Characters?

KA: No favorite characters, because she likes the characters that she is currently writing. She did not dislike any of the characters she was currently writing.

Question: Regarding crossing-over between adult and YA series?

KA: She will not cross-over due to the adult content. Her younger readers will want to read about the YA characters, and she is not comfortable placing them in adult story lines..BUT…Reese (from FROSTBITTEN) did cross-over in one of the Darkest Powers novels.

Question: About her writing history and why ?

KA: She has been writing all of her life. She likes to write about the paranormal and blames Saturday morning Scooby-Do cartoons. And there is always something extra to write about in paranormal.

WE would like to thank Kelley for this wonderful interview. It was a very long and detailed interview, and we appreciate the time and effort that she has put into her answers. As disappointed as we are, that her Women of the Otherworld series is going on hiatus, we look forward to her e-stories, novellas and anthologies for the Otherworld series.

Sandy
