This week The Reading Cafe is daring you to read: BEAST BEHAVING BADLY by Shelly Laurenston.

BEAST BEHAVING BADLY by Shelly Laurenston-a review

BEAST BEHAVING BADLY is the 5th novel in Shelly Laurenston’s Pride series.  Shelly Laurenston (aka G A Aiken) writes with humor, romance and enough sex to make you laugh and sigh all at the same time. Both of Shelly’s series involved paranormal shifter storylines, but the characters are as fallible and lovable as any human or animal on the planet.   Beast Behaving Badly is my favorite novel and Blayne and Bo, are probably my favorite couple.

Bo Novikov is part polar bear/part lion and all male.  As one of the most aggressive professional hockey players in the professional shifter league, Bo’s reputation precedes him.  Many hockey players, both full human and shifter, rarely recover after a physical encounter with Bo.  But his OCD with time, cleanliness and lists, pushes the patience of everyone including his family.  But when a young woman with sexy legs, catches his eye 10 years earlier, it has left him longing for a return to the Carnivores Team from the Shifter Hockey league.  Hoping to meet the mysterious beauty, Bo finds himself signing a contract without hesitation.

Blayne Thorpe is part wild dog/part wolf and as energetic as ever.  Raised by her widowed father, Ezra is a shifter wolf from the Magnus Pack and as dangerous as any protective father and wolf, Blayne was always shunned by the wolves for her mixed heritage. Known for their tendency to get emotional and aggressive, wild dog/wolf hybrids were shunned by their own.  But when she and her best friend Gwen, take in Gwen’s fiance’s hockey game, Blayne panics when one-Bo Novikov, now 7 feet of prime bear-cat hybrid, pursues her in hopes of dinner and a date.

There is much humor involved with Shelly’s writing.  The antics of Mitch O’Neil-lion male and his brotherly affection for Blayne will have you laughing.  The sexual innuendos and double-speak between the wild-dogs and their pack, will make you want to read the passages over again, until your sides hurt. Blayne, like any wild dog, runs off her energy chasing squirrels and hunting wild game.

Bo and Blayne’s relationship has it moments.  When Blayne approaches Bo to help  train for shifter derby, Blayne’s penchant for misplacing items, her lack of time management and messy lifestyle leave Bo feeling like he has lost his mind.  But Bo’s need for schedules and cleanliness have everyone, including his teammates hiding behind closed doors.  But an attack and attempted abduction, have Bo and Blayne airlifted to Ursus County, Maine for the type of medical care only shifters can provide.

When Bo finally wakens from surgery, his only thoughts are for Blayne.  He has grown to love his wolf-dog, and remembering how she looked after the accident, leaves him reeling with the idea that she may not have survived.  But when the surgeon removes a micro-chip that was imbedded into Blayne, she realizes that she was used as bait in a deadly game of shifter fighting and take-downs.  Knowing who was probably responsible, Blayne and Bo refuse to return home, and the couple begin a humorous and sexual relationship that had only just begun before the attack.

Following an investigation into a series of shifter kidnappings and death, all leads point to Ursus County, Maine –the one place no one had considered before- and the temporary home of Bo and Blayne. When Ezra Thorpe, a retired navy man, is called into help by the Alpha male of the rich and famous Van Holtz pack, he is only too aware, that his only daughter had been used.  Making a deal with the Alpha, Ezra agrees to help return his daughter and the hockey hero, but on the condition that those responsible are brought swiftly and quickly to justice.

Blayne and Bo’s relationship has many humorous moments:  from her garbage heap of an apartment and its’ 15 open-boxes of sandwich bags, and her need to wear street vendor watches made by Pra-du and Cha-Chanel to  Bo’s need for lists , schedules and accurate time keeping, that will in the end, actually save the couple from  the shifter fighting pits and keep them safe and alive. Bo’s hockey championships and Blayne’s derby antics, will have you in stitches, just like Bo and Blayne.

There is much background information revealed in The Mane Squeeze, the book prior to Beast Behaving Badly.  Shelly’s novels should be read in order so that most of the storylines are not confusing.  An attack against Blayne in the prior novel, will reach its’ climax in Beast Behaving Badly and many of the characters from most of the previous novels, make an appearance in one way or another.  Shelly, whether in her G A Aiken persona, or as Shelly herself, involves all of her major characters in most of the storylines and novels, and that is a positive aspect of her writing.  I am a big fan of Shelly’s Pride and Pack series, as well as her Dragonkin series (G A Aiken) and if you have never read one of her novels, I suggest and recommend you start at the beginning and don’t stop until your sides hurt from laughter.

Maya Banks Exclusive

Maya Banks talks about her upcoming new book, and gives her fans a sneak peek.

Maya on Facebook:  I don’t remember if I ever posted the blurb for Never Seduce a Scot here on Facebook. I know I posted the cover, but here’s the blurb for those of you who haven’t seen it yet :))

This sinfully sweet new romance from Maya Banks features a remarkable woman whose rare gift teaches a gruff Scottish warrior how to listen with his heart.Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but considered “touched” to outsiders. Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn’t speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Eveline taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world view her as daft, content to stay with her family. But when an arranged marriage with a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, she accepts her duty—unprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful she can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled he awakens her deepest passions.Graeme is intrigued by his new bride, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation, whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love.

ONLY PLEASURE by Lora Leigh-a review

ONLY PLEASURE by Lora Leigh – a review

Only Pleasure by Lora Leigh review

Lora Leigh’s Bound Hearts series is a delectable read of contemporary romance with a nice touch of erotica to it. Of all the books in the series, my undisputed favorite is Only Pleasure which is the tenth book in the series.

Only Pleasure is about Chase Falladay and Kia Rutherford. Chase Fallady is one of the personal investigators of “The Club.” The Club is a place where men pretty much share the same lifestyle of sharing their women in ménages along with some sexual extremes. Kia Rutherford is the daughter of a prestigious business firm owner and ex-wife of Drew Stanton who was also part of the club. The thing is, even though Kia was married to Drew Stanton, Kia and Chase had always had their eye on one another even before Kia married Drew.

The story starts out with Chase having to visit Kia over an incident where Kia had almost gotten raped by Drew, if it hadn’t been for Drew’s chosen third who saved Kia from that scary fate. After the incident, Kia had confided in a “friend” about the incident and the club in which that “friend” proceeded to spread rumors that threaten the secrecy of the club. Chase promises Kia a generous divorce settlement and protection from her ex-husband who backhanded her because of her intention not to take him back in exchange for her to deny the rumors or any stories that pertains to the club.

Fast forward two years later and Kia is alone and closed-off from everyone for the past two years since the incident. While hiding out in a bar after an obligatory party, Kia runs into Chase and his friend Khalid el Hamid-Mustafa. They then invite her to have a drink with them. Well that turns into a passionate ménage in the back of Khalid’s hummer limo. Both Kia and Chase agree that the experience is only for the pleasure. Little do they know that it escalates to something much bigger than just the sensual gratification. At first Chase, Khalid and Kia participate in ménages. It was only for the pleasure right? But for Chase it was a way to avoid that kind of intimacy that comes with making love with just two people; his way to fight his ever growing feelings for Kia. But in the end of all the fun and games, Kia is still going to sleep all by herself in her loneliness. My most favorite scene in the book is when Chase does finally make love to Kia long without a third, on the hood of his car with the snow falling all around them. The scene was just so intimate that even though it was just for the pleasure you feel and see the height of emotion running through both of them. Of all the love scenes, I felt like this particular scene took my breath away.

Unfortunately even after a particularly steamy scene, Chase is still leaving Kia alone in her loneliness yet again. After an assault on Kia that left her injured with a concussion that Chase finally realizes how much he really loves and her and does whatever he can to make it up to her. He cares for her injuries and watches over her while she sleeps. And when she starts to feel better; he makes love to her, cleans her up afterwards, and even proceeds to hold her through the night the way he should have been doing for her in the beginning. When Chase does all this for Kia my respect for Chase really grows. The thing is this we are all human and we do mistakes that hurt one another whether we meant to do it or not. Sometimes we have a tendency to make these mistakes a lot on the person we love and cherish. But thing is for the person to own up and do whatever it takes to show that they have changed, to show they care, to do what it is necessary to make it better shows someone of worth to me. Not only does Chase own up and takes of care Kia but Chase is so sincere to Kia that it makes you want to tear up at his tenderness and his emotion towards her. Even though Kia is at the point of being wary of getting close to Chase again, Chase still continues to show Kia that he is it in for the long run and that he wasn’t going anywhere. And when the threats on Kia’s life doesn’t stop, Chase is there the whole step of the way to protect her.

One of my favorite scenes is when after Kia gets rescued from Harold Brockheim who assaulted and tried to kill Kia. While she was in the hospital was Chase’s first time he ever told Kia that he loves her. Also the wives of the club members visit her and leave her flowers. For a woman who was alone for the past two years, it looks like she had friends all along. It really touched my heart when Chase promised himself that Kia would never be alone again. It just makes you so teary when real friendship can be hard to find. Even though Kia had trusted the wrong friend, there is a group of kind hearted women trying to reach out to her that she doesn’t need to be alone no more. Another one is right before Chase and Kia get into a particular heavy love making scene, Kia says this is Chase. “It is, Chase? Isn’t that what love truly is? Being free even as you’re being held? Knowing you can reach for the stars, and someone’s there to share it with you? Or to give you a boost if you need it? Someone to laugh with, love with, cry and argue with? Someone you know will be there when you’re moody, when you’re dark, or when you just need a hug. Isn’t that love?” I love Kia’s honest definition of what love is to her and the thing is I most truly do agree with her.

There is just so much to like from the book. What I appreciated the most was how realistic that story was in the sense of the that society can be cruel, that people have their hang ups in their relationships and also how a person’s past can affect their future relationships. Lora Leigh shows her talent that she utilizes such strong depths of emotion but also include some rather “heavy” love scenes. While some may complain that some of Lora Leigh’s books are a little on the crude side, I believe Lora Leigh has the right touch to do it tastefully. This is my first Lora Leigh series and I absolutely do not regret it.

HARLEQUIN ROMANCE SURVEY-Relationships

Sex & Relationships-Harlequin Romance Survey

SURPRISING SEX AND RELATIONSHIP FINDINGS

by Lisa Blake
Earlier this month, Harlequin, the famous publisher of romance novels and other types of “reading entertainment for women,” released its annual Romance Report findings.

How does your relationship compare to the HR survey?  Do you agree with the findings?

And seriously, 12% said…” liked his cute dog” *sigh*….The survey does NOT say how old the participants were, but something tells me…the age is quite young.

http://lifestyle.sympatico.ca/Relationships/galleries/articles/romance_survey_findings.htm?feedname=photo_gallery_lifestyle_romance_report&pos=1&nolookup=true

The study surveyed women about various aspects of our contemporary romantic situation, such as how we feel about our love lives, what we look for and don’t look for in a partner, and how we communicate in the age of smartphones and Facebook.

“Today, women consider themselves more independent and powerful than ever before – yet we’ve found that many of the traditional beliefs about romance, dating and relationships still persist,” said Harlequin’s Senior Manager of Public Relations, Michelle Renaud, in a statement. “Additionally, we are seeing new challenges as women are managing their image on a digital level. There is a real need to curate an online persona as much as a real-life presence in an extremely connected society.”
Let’s take a look at some of the key findings and discover something about ourselves! Men should really be reading this too. It would give you guys a little insight.

1. We’re bored, bored, bored
64% of respondents reported that their dating life was ”boring” — regardless of relationship status! Guys, if you’re reading this, take note! We need you to step it up.

2. We’re optimistic
Good news, though. 84% believe romance is out there and they will find it, while 89% of women believe that the best days of their love lives are still ahead. So, there’s hope.

3. We know what we like
The “traditional charms” of a man remain the most popular ”turn-ons.” These are, sense of humor (82%), killer smile (57%) and, amusingly, an “accent” (23%). 12% liked him having a cute dog.

4. We like chivalry
91% of women surveyed believe dating rules have become more flexible, yet just over half of us still expect a man to ask a woman out (59%), hold the door for us (54%) and pay for the first date (51%).

5. We do our research
52% of us use Facebook to research a prospective first date. 17% Google him and 5% check out his Twitter. How we contact a prospective date depends on how old we are. Text messages were most popular among 21-24 year olds (74%) while older women prefer to make a phone call (80%) and 18-20 year olds are significantly more likely to communicate via Facebook than older women.

6. We send sexy messages (and some of us send naked pictures)
52% of women aged 25-35 said they have never participated in online dating. 43% of single women have sent “sexts” (sexual text messages) and 27% of all women have sent a naked photo in an email or text. Those in a serious relationship are even more likely to send sexts (57%).

7. We know what we don’t like
Among the top factors women listed as ”deal breakers” were being too needy (32%), dependence on a BlackBerry/ iPhone (31%), having too many Facebook photos with an ex-girlfriend (29%), being grammatically challenged (24%) and still living with his parents (20%).

8. We define romance as “thoughtfulness.”
Women surveyed counted “thoughtfulness” (76%), “appreciation” (70%) and “intimacy” (67%) as definitions of romance. Also high were remembering the small details (56%) and being protective (37%). Less common words used to describe romance were “sex” (26%), fantasy (15%) and “gifts” (11%).

SHIREEN NEMNICH-Interview with the Author

Shireen Nemnich -Interview with the Author

Shireen Nemnich -The Interview

The Reading Cafe would like to welcome author Shireen Nemnich. Shireen has recently released a new paranormal fantasy series SHADOWS OF MYST, with her first novel-THE ROYAL ASSASSIN

The Reading Cafe has reviewed THE ROYAL ASSASSIN and I (Sandy) believe it is one of the best NEW series I have read. You can find Sandy’s review dated February 19,2012.   Welcome-Shireen Nemnich.

TRC:  Hi Shireen.  We would like to start with some basic background information:

Name: Shireen Nemnich
Year of Birth: 1964
Birthplace: Kansas
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
Resides: Williamsburg, Virginia
Number of Children: 3
Grandchildren: 2
Career: Licensed Practical Nurse
Favorite Authors of Fiction: Christine Feehan & Lisa Kleypas
Writing Genre: Romance

TRC: Would you tell us a little something about yourself.

SN: I’m full of energy and love living life. My daughter Sarah has a 5 word-cloud describing me: Energy, Sweet, Funny, Smart, Nurturing. It really does describe me pretty well. But I think I really should tack on Spiritual, which is not the same as religious.

I love reading an writing and spend most of my time doing that. Also love to play computer games and xbox. I used to play on a text based mud, Genesis the Original LP mud, http://www.genesismud.org. Then I became a wizard (Programmer) on the game. My wizard char is Damaris, my mortal chars are secret. :). I still log in occasionally to catch up with everyone. I must confess that Genesis and the people who play the game have been a very large influence in my fantasy writing along with LOTR and Dragonlance. Now I’ve not actually read the Dragonlance books, only a stray one here and there, but in the game I played a knight. It’s great role-playing because it inspired me to do quite a bit of fantasizing and writing.

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing? Have you always liked to write?

SN: I first began to love writing while in High School, after I wrote a short story for English. I got an A. 🙂
A few years ago I bought a book by Jack Canfield, Keys to living the law of attraction. In this book there are several questions you have to ask yourself and you write it all up. The amazing part was. Two major things came up. Writing and speaking/teaching. So that’s when I really made a personal commitment to do what I love to do. So I decided to stop just “dreaming” of being a writer and just be one.

TRC: What is the first piece of work that you have ever published?

SN: Poetry from the Darkside.

TRC: You have said, that you once published some poetry on lulu.com. Have you considered re-releasing a book of poems?

SN: I do plan to put a more cohesive book together that expands my previous book. I really haven’t written a poem for awhile. However it really doesn’t take much for me to be inspired to write one if I choose to. But I am a rhyming poet, which seems out of fashion.

TRC: Will you offer up some poetry for our interview? 🙂

SN: Of course! Be forewarned Dark or Erotic or Dark and Erotic is my thing.

Battered

Battered, beaten, shamed and torn
This is the life for which she was born
In the dark of night, what he made her do
No longer a child but nobody knew

Her eyes aglow so warm and kind
Began to darken with the measure of time
Her soul was payment of which she paid
A lovely spirit, which began to fade

No longer seeing, no longer does she care
This is a cross that she alone must bare
Love and happiness is only a dream
Which comes in the silence after her scream

Branded
I lay thee out upon the ground
Thou looks at me without a sound
I spread thy thighs in a sweeping motion
Thou breathes in deeply with such emotion

I find the brand that holds my mark
While the coals and fire begin to spark
I look back at thee lying so still
All because this is my will

Thy heart is pounding in thy chest
Thou knows that this is no test
I’ll brand thy flesh in good time
I’ll make thee scream that thou art mine

TRC: The Royal Assassin is a wonderful, short story about the people in the fictional land of Myst. Would you tell us a little about the premise of the story?

SN: TRA – Is really a love story between Reis and Shadowen that is seen through the eyes and heart of Reis, the Royal Assassin.

TRC: The premise is different than many fantasy/paranormal novels. The idea of using shadows to communicate and travel is very novel. How did you come up with the idea?

SN: I mentioned before playing Genesis, in this game there is a Guild, The Shadow Union. I always thought it sounded a bit… mysterious, sexy even. So the name Shadowen came to my mind as a main char in a story. Then halfway down the page she suddenly had a twin brother Shade. By page two they were mystics. Then several drafts later, It only seemed natural that Shadowen would travel through shadows, and Shade would too, so of course all Mystics would use shadows. Then Shadowen would be special in being able to communicate with shadows. Then to communicate with them, they needed to be some form of a spirit. It just seemed to make sense. However it’s really an inspiration thought I saw unfold in my mind as I wrote.

TRC: The first novel in any series, can be filled with so much background information about the different characters, as well as the unfolding future storylines, that the main plot is overwhelmed with too much information. But The Royal Assassin blends very smoothly. Did you have a difficult time deciding how to envelope the premise and the all the characters into a novella-style book?

SN: I love it when a book simply pulls me in right from the start. I will be honest, I can become bored if I have to read more than a page of setup in the beginning. I tried to make this grab you, pull you in right from the start, allowing Reis to explain to you while he takes you on a journey of his life. I want him to explain as you go along. Why do you need to know about moving through shadows until you watch him do it? Why do you need to know anything until it’s time to reveal it? Or at least that was my thought. Grab you, suck you in and explain on the way. Especially with a series, because it will get old fast if you have to repeat it all to a point it’s like reading a glossary. I’d rather it be like a mystery revealing itself.

TRC: Reis and Shadowen are the central characters in The Royal Assassin, but the young couple, suffer some terrible losses. Will we see more of Reis and Shadowen in the future novels?

SN: Reis and Shadowen are pivotal characters through the series. The Royal Chalice is written in both their POV. The Forgotten Assassin is Shadowen’s POV, and it takes place a 1,000 years after The Royal Assassin.

TRC: Do you have plans for Shadowen’s twin brother Shade? An upcoming novel?

SN: Shade is a very troubled, dark character and yet I find him quite beautiful and tortured. His story will be told in The Royal Conjurer. It’s perhaps going to be the darkest of the series, not only because it involves Shade but it takes place during the height of the Troll War.

TRC: You have listed 3 additional novels that you are writing for The Shadows of the Myst series: The Royal Seer, The Royal Conjurer and The Forgotten Assassin. Will you tell us a little bit about each book eg. Characters or plotlines.

SN: The books so far in the series, in Mystic timeline are:

– The Royal Seer – POV is Scious and Vestrial – Parents of Reis, their love story and the obstacles they must over come. This book touches more on the relationship between Mystic and Nightelf. The society, religion, politics, prejudices and revelations of the past and the future of Myst.

– The Royal Assassin – POV is Reis. Their love story as mentioned before.

– The Royal Warrior – POV is Darken. This actually begins during a tragic time for Shadowen and Reis in TRA – Then picks up from there to see Myst through Darken’s eyes and heart and his quest to find Mysteria’s Temple and reclaim his sword, becoming The Royal Warrior. This is when the Troll War begins.

– The Royal Conjurer – POV is Shade. I really don’t want to give anything away on this, just yet, but there is much Shade will have to go through in this story. It’s also during the height of the Troll War and he faces much loss.

– The Royal Chalice – POV is Reis and Shadowen – This is where the Troll War ends. It will start out with Reis POV and will switch to Shadowen’s POV It has a lot of of conflict, twists and turns with devastation being high on the list.

– The Forgotten Assassin – POV is Shadowen – This takes place 1,000 years or so after TRA. Shadowen has a new consort and takes on another. 🙂 Go Shadowen! However this book will bring true insight into her and her relationships. It pulls in all the characters you love and hate back together leading to a final climax that will probably cause you to read all the other books all over again. Plus it introduces two new chars, Abril and Crow. These are Shadowen’s consorts and Crow has his own story/book in another series and Abril does as well.

TRC: Do you have any releases dates for you next novel?

SN: I don’t have a date, but I am really shooting for The Royal Seer to be released in April.
I am also working on releasing another short story E-book in either February or March. Depends solely on how much time it takes to complete the editing. However I promise you will be the first to know the title and synopsis, once it’s finalized.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the Shadows of the Myst series?

SN: There are six in total. – but on that note… Spector has made a few comments in my head about him telling his side of things… Which would mean a whole new series about Mystics and Nightelves, It would take place around the war that brings the nightelves under the surface.

TRC: You have just released an ebook for Kindle entitled: Witch Mistake and you plan to offer it free on Kindle February 13 and 14th in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Why did you decide to offer the novel FREE for Valentine’s Days?

SN: It just seems to make sense to offer a sweet love story on Valentines Day. My Valentine gift to everyone!

TRC: Will you tell us a little about Witch Mistake?

SN: Anjelis is a cute little witch who has spent her entire life believing she’s a mistake and told she must stay away from Lucien. Lucien is a vampire who hates witches. Vampires and witches are forbidden to have any form of a relationship. Mix in a bit of Fate and tada a love story!

TRC: What are you working on at the moment?

SN: The Royal Seer, The Royal Warrior and The First Ones.

TRC: Do any of your children write? Are they involved in your writing?

SN: My teenage daughter, Sarah. She actually inspired and influenced me to publish on lulu my book of poetry. She published a short story but later decided to remove it and revisit it into more a novel. I actually find myself smiling and laughing out loud when reading some of her dialogue. She has a quick whit and it shows. However she killed her main character off and my friends and her’s who read her book, were screaming over it. But that’s what I loved, she’s unconventional and I think she is really going to do well.

Sarah proofs all my work with me and she does my editing as well. She’s not big with fantasy but my more modern and especially my YA work, she is a big fan and she screens everything.

TRC: What do you have planned for future books or novels (not including The Shadows of the Myst series?) Are you working on any different series?

SN: In the realm of Valantis, where Shadows of Myst takes place, there are a few more series. The Knights of Provencia to put a name to one out of the five so far.

Another series is my Vampire series, the first book in the series is The First Ones.

TRC: Who is your muse?

SN: I have way too many muses running around my head.

LIGHTING ROUND

TRC: Shireen, WE would like to thank you very much for taking the time to complete the interview questions. We wish you the best of luck with your upcoming books and novels. Your storylines are a breath of fresh air-something new in the realm of paranormal fantasy.
