Gabriel by M. A. Abraham – a review

The Reading Cafe has decided to do a new feature, that we may post from time to time.  Below is a dual review on the novel Gabriel by new author M.A. Abraham.  We thought, we would take two different looks at the same story.  We hope you like the new feature.

GABRIEL by M. A. Abraham

Reviewed by Sandy

GABRIEL is the first book and series for new author M. A. Abraham.  As part of the Elven Chronicles, Gabriel is the introduction to a new and exciting family of Elves and Fae in the recovery phase following 500 years of war.  Hoping to gather their ‘people’ back home, Gabriel is commissioned by Elven King Daroth to locate and return the Elves who have gathered in the Hidden Valley for centuries.  But unbeknownst to him, Gabriel’s journey is more than a mission of recovery- but a mission to find his heart.

High Lord General Gabriel Eagle Talon knew that this mission was more than a search and rescue.  King Daroth had the gift of foresight, and without a doubt, he was hiding something from his friend. Knowing that the King’s true life-mate was one of the missing Elven maidens, Gabriel was willing to risk his pride for his friend.  But the cryptic signals between Gabriel’s nephew Marious and the King were exasperating-something or someone was waiting.  Hoping to end their charade, Gabriel and his warriors, set out to discover what secrets the King was hiding.

Eden is an Elven maiden, trained as a warrior but with the ability to ‘talk’ to the trees.  Her presence and nurturing gift aids with the renewal and growth of the surrounding forests and trees.  But the trees whisper of pain and sorrow, as well as warn Eden about the ongoing search for her people.  With the warning comes a revelation that her future is about to change. But Eden has always felt that something or someone was missing in her life-would the quest answer her prayers?

Eden and Gabriel are true life-mates, but neither will accept what fate has ordained.  With the knowledge that they refuse to admit to their life mate bond, Eden’s brother takes it upon himself, to assist the couple on their journey.  But a critical error in judgment forces Gabriel and Eden into a situation that ends in suffering for both.

Upon return to their homeland, Eden’s sister C’liandra is betrothed to King Daroth, and the bonding ceremony is immediate. When Eden’s great-uncle recounts the history of the family lore, it is discovered that Eden’s gift and ability to talk to the trees, as well as heal the earth, is one of the rare Tratchar. The power to aid in the renewal of life, is only half of what the fates have destined for Eden.

Gabriel is once again sent on a journey to aid the King and his reluctant mate, is sent in search of her missing extended family.  The King has a plan to reunite the reluctant lovers.  Separation for the life-mates is difficult, and Eden still refuses to accept Gabriel as her soul/her heart. Eden’s need to aid with the sick and dying trees, drains her power and energy, which leaves her emotional and exhausted.  She needs her life-mate, but by not accepting their bond, her true powers, have not manifested, and she grows weaker every day.  It Is only when she discovers another life herself, does the true meaning of family and life reveal.

Gabriel is a short story about destiny, fate, family and the power of love.  M A Abraham writes from the heart about the Elves that she has created. A long history of morals and norms are addressed, although some are reluctant for change.  The joining of two life-mates brings with it a revelation and a power  that has not been seen in centuries, and the discovery of an another will aid the Elves in ways that only multiply with each bonded pair.  I enjoyed Gabriel’s story and I have no problem recommending GABRIEL and M A Abraham’s ELVEN CHRONICLES series.

Additional comments by Barb

Since Sandy’s review is complete, and explains the premise of Gabriel, I would just like to give my overall impression of the story, as well as the writing by new author M.A. Abraham.

I have not read a many stories regarding Elves, so this was a new road for me.  M.A. Abraham takes us on a journey of a romance that was going to be a difficult path for the destined couple. The main characters and story in Gabriel were different from the usual romance, as they seemed totally incompatible to each other.  From the moment we met Eden, I liked her, but I too thought she needed to be tied down.  lol  At first, I was not crazy about Gabriel, but as time went on, I got to like him a lot.  I thought they made a great couple, and Eden was really a hoot.  But then when she came into her powers (Tratchar), she settled and became an equal life mate and partner to Gabriel.  The world created by M.A. Abraham was different, and very interesting.  I thought she created some excellent characters, and you can see future stories coming out of this first book. Marious was a fun character, and you know near to the end, he is the next book.  Then there are some other good characters that I would love to learn more of such as, Haylo and Larek, C’Liandra and King Daroth, and the new girl we have yet to meet, whom must be destined for Marious.

M.A. Abraham takes us into this world, with elves that have different and unique powers, but most importantly, she takes on journey of pure romance.  This is all about Gabriel and Eden, their romance, and their journey to discover their bond, and to save the land they live in.  M.A. Abraham is a fresh and interesting new author, with a wonderful imagination.  She gives a new meaning to romance. I enjoyed Gabriel very much.  If you love a pure romantic story, Elves, fun characters, and a fantasy world,  look no further then Gabriel.

THE DARKEST SEDUCTION by Gena Showalter-A New Release Review by Vickie

THE DARKEST SEDUCTION by Gene Showalter

THE Darkest Seduction is the ninth book in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. Paris, whose body houses the demon of Promiscuity, has to have sex often to keep up his strength, or he grows weak and will die. His demon emits pheromones and certain scents that make everyone lust after him. The rub? He can only have sex with a person once. Until he meets Sienna, who represents everything he and the Lords despise. She was a Hunter, who has made it their mission to kill the Lords, whom they blame all of the problems of the world.

Paris meets Sienna several books ago, where she is sent in as bait to lure him with his hope of having sex. When Sienna gets close enough, she drugs Paris and he is taken prisoner by the Hunters. After he is held and tortured for a few days, the Hunters realize he is growing weak and send Sienna in to do the deed. What neither of them count on is their instant, albeit, unwanted at the time, attraction to each other. Once they’ve had sex, his strength is restored and he is able to escape, and takes Sienna with him. In a shootout with the Hunters, Sienna is killed (by the Hunters) and Paris is forced to leave her. This is where his obsession with her starts. He soon figures out that his demon, whom he calls Sex, will let him have sex with her again, which has never happened in his long life. Coupled with the fact that Crounus, Titan God, has brought her back from the dead and given her the demon of Wrath, Paris will literally move heaven and earth to find her. Another problem, she’s a ghost and Paris can’t see her. Unfortunately, for me, this obsession has changed Paris a lot. He became addict, addicted to Ambrosia, and became whiny and very violent.

Darkest Seduction starts with Paris in the heavens trying to find any bits of information he can about Sienna. We are introduced to some new characters that give Paris the information he so desperately needs. Viola, minor goddess of the Afterlife and possessor of the demon of Narcissism provides him with what he needs to do in order to be able to see Sienna. He finally finds out that Cronus has taken Sienna to a castle in the Realm of Blood and Shadows, a place that he, Cronus, believes no one else can get to. Cronus has made Sienna believe that she has no other choice than to forget about Paris and go to spy on Galen, leader of the Hunters and possessor of the demon of Hope (yep, Hope is a demon. Who knew?) in order to save her sister Skye and Paris and the Lords and their women. What Sienna doesn’t know is that Cronus has already killed Skye in one of the many plotlines that run through this book.

Zachariel, an angel warrior who works for the One True Deity, plays a big part in trying to cryptically let Sienna know that things are not as they seem. Showalter, no doubt, uses this story to set up her new spin off series for the angels called Angels of the Dark. There is a huge battle at the end where the Lords, backed up by the angel warriors face off against the Titan gods and goddesses, along with Galen and the Hunters. It has been foretold by the All Seeing Eye, who paints what she sees, past and present and future, that Galen will behead Cronus in an epic battle and kill him. When that part ensues, and Galen goes to make the killing blow, Sienna is behind Galen and actually makes the kill herself, which, drum roll please, makes Sienna the new Queen of the Titans. As a result of her being the one to end Cronus, she inherits all of his powers. And, of course, she and Paris have their happily ever after. It was a long road to get there. The other Lords were very suspicious of Sienna and her intentions towards Paris, but in the end, they somewhat accept her.

Another plotline is Kane’s, keeper of the demon of Disaster. He and William were trapped in Hell in the last book, and, although William escaped, Kane didn’t. He was found at one point in this book, but lost again. He is being held by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and we are totally left hanging as to what is going on with him.

I really liked some parts of this book. The scene where Paris & William finally make it to the castle in the Realm of Blood and Shadows is hysterical. Let’s just say, I have a whole new vision of Gargoyles, who are instantly attracted to Paris. We will no doubt see more of Viola and her narcissistic ways, because, in her words, “she is greater than great”. Also, Maddox’s wife, Ashlyn, finally gives birth to the twins, which are half demon, half human. William, of all people, has to deliver them and immediately nicknames them things like Pistol and Shank. The battle scene at the end was great, but it took soooo long to get there. And the fact that Sienna becomes “the boss of everyone” is, in my opinion, a bit of a stretch. A former human Hunter, killed, brought back as a ghost and possessed with a demon……… I guess we’ll see how she handles her new status in future books.

All in all, this was not my favorite. But, it is a necessary read in order to continue the series, but it could have been a little shorter. It sometimes took pages in order to find out the answer to a character’s question. Lots of introspection, etc. With all of that said, I am looking forward to the next book. I don’t know if we know who it’ll be, but my vote is on Kane.

Tickle Your Fancy is one of our Themes. Since The Reading Cafe is a place we can all hang out, while we drink our coffee or sip our margaritas, the talk of everything books can lead to funny stuff when we are having fun. Since this was so much fun before, let’s see what Marcie has for us this month…..

My Olympic Ice Skating Debut………Not!!

Living up in the great white North, one of our favorite past times in the winter is ice skating. Seeing how this winter has been a strange and mild one for us, we were pleasantly surprised to see that our outdoor rinks were finally ready.

So the other day my sister and I bundle up in our snow gear, we now look like Maggie Simpson, fall into the car cause we can barely move in our snowsuits and drive over to the rink.  We somehow manage to extract ourselves from the car and waddle our way to the benches to change into our skates.  With our pack of tissues in our pockets and skates on we’re ready to go.

Now keep in mind one hazard of ice skating is children learning to skate.  They become road hazards, like little speed bumps in the road that you should really avoid.  Ten minutes out on the ice and we’re now playing dodge the falling child.  Here comes a child sliding by, wheeeee,  as I go one way dodging the little speed bump, another falls and I’m forced to go the other way. I’m now zig zagging across the ice attempting to stay upright. They really should make a smaller ice pad for the learning to skate crowd. 😉  Of course we get the giggles which doesn’t help cause now the wind has picked up and our eyes are tearing.

One more joy of outdoor skating, next it’s the runny nose. Yes I’m now juggling the task of dodging children, tearing eyes and needing to blow my nose all well staying upright on my skates.  Oh no let’s not forget the bumpy patches and chips in the ice which I always seem to find. As I manage to by pass one chipped spot I hit another and I go staggering across the ice, hit a bumpy part, my arms are flailing in an attempt to keep me upright and I wind up in a snowbank, stumbling to a stop.

Here come the giggles again and runny nose.  Oh the joys of outdoor skating in winter in the great white north.   As we continue our adventure on the ice,  it appears the wind doesn’t want to stop so every time we come around the corner and skate towards the other end, we get blasted by some chilly wind.  Me a clutz on feet, decides to turn around and skate backwards to avoid the wind in my face.  *warning bells begin to play in the background…..”Danger Will Robinson, Danger”…  I was never that great at skating backwards and I should always remember this but no, I turn and attempt to glide backwards.  Bad decision, my blade catches a chipped spot or small hole in the ice and I suddenly can fly, backwards albeit it but I am now sailing through the air. This outcome will not be good I just know it.  Needless to say I make a less then stellar landing and look like a chalk drawing in a murder investigation.

Thankfully nothing is broken, just my ego and I’m once again laughing along with my sister. After an hour we finally decide to call it quits, and head home for a well deserved hot chocolate and baileys.  Tune in next time for another adventure in the life of Devil Mouse. 😉

Jennifer Lynne-An interview with the Author

An Interview with Jennifer Lynne-Author of Platinum Passion

TRC: Hi Jennifer. Thank you for joining us at The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information.

NAME: Jennifer Lynne
MARITAL STATUS: Engaged (about to be married this year)
RESIDENCE: Melbourne Australia
NUMBER OF CHILDREN: 2 of mine and 2 of his
NUMBER OF SIBLINGS: 2
FORMAL EDUCATION: Degree in Literature and Media Studies

TRC:  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Jennifer:  I recently bought a house with my partner and our teenage/young adult children, so we are all adapting to our new life at present. I’ve worked in many fields in the marketing area and even did a stint as an optical dispenser, but these days work in medical admin. I spend most of my spare time running the kids around to all of their various school/sporting/social activities. Writing is what keeps me sane (or maybe it is what sends me crazy – and we all need a little crazy escapism in our life, right?). So I try to make time for writing every day. When I do write, I feel complete. Corny, but true! Outside family, work and writing, I love reading, movies, TV, walking, driving up into the hills to have coffee or lunch at a winery, exploring art and craft galleries, and visiting the beach.

TRC:  You have a degree in Literature and Media Studies. Have you always been interested in writing?

Jennifer:  Yes, I’ve always loved writing – and reading. I didn’t become interested in romance writing, though, until I was at university and someone dared me to write a “Mills & Boon”. I took the dare and sent off my first manuscript, and though it was rejected (of course!) I did get some great feedback on my unique voice. This eventually led to me joining the then fledgling Romance Writers of Australia. I dabbled in writing as a hobby for many years, but after my divorce I decided life was too short not to go for your dreams, so I rewrote an erotic romance I’d penned earlier and submitted it to Red Sage. They bought SEDUCING SERENA for their Secrets anthology (Volume 28) and thus my first published work came into being.

TRC: Were your parents and family supportive of the choices in your life?

Jennifer:  My father passed away when I was a child, but I am sure he would have been supportive if he’d had the chance. My mother, sisters and my current partner are very supportive indeed. I am lucky to have such a wonderful family.

TRC:  Many artists and authors, have someone in their life that they bounce ideas and information between. Whom do you bounce ideas with?

Jennifer:  My partner likes to think he is the inspiration behind all of the heroes in my stories. Who am I to dissuade him of that idea? I’m also lucky to have sisters and a cousin who love reading, so I often talk to them about ideas I might have for a story, or get them to read something in advance and give me feedback. My very own beta readers!

TRC: SEDUCING SERENA was your first erotic romance novella published. Will you tell us somethingabout the premise of this book?

Jennifer:  Nick is a fun-loving bachelor with an aversion to commitment, and Serena a buttoned-up tax accountant whose emotional pain runs so deep she decides to take emotion out of the equation and interview for a potential partner:

Thirty-two year old tax accountant Serena Hewitt gets more than she bargained for when the charismatic Nicholas Wade responds to her lonely hearts advertisement. With her life and heart already in tatters, Serena’s experience has taught her there is no such thing as ‘Mister Right’. On the surface Nick appears to be a fun-loving bachelor with bad-boy good looks and an aversion to commitment, and the serious Serena is a challenge he finds impossible to resist. He wants to prove her wrong. But his secret might just do the opposite.

TRC:  The first novella in your Gods of Love trilogy is PLATINUM PASSION. Will you tell us about the premise of this book? (See Sandy’s review below)

Jennifer:  PLATINUM PASSION is the first in my series of stand-alone novellas with the erotes as a common theme. So who are the erotes? Pothos – the god of sexual yearning, Himeros – the god of sexual desire, and Anteros – the god of unrequited/requited love. In this version of the Greek myth, all are the children of Aphrodite and aspects of the primal god of desire, Eros:

Three people. One erotic fantasy. And a twentieth wedding anniversary like no other. Jeannie yearns for the return of passion in her marriage. Jake craves new excitement in the form of another man. Pothos is one of the erotes, an aspect of Eros, the ancient Greek god of love, and this couple’s distinctive yearning has called to him. By the power of the erotes he intends to rekindle the flame of Jake and Jeannie’s passion in a night of desire that will be the ultimate platinum anniversary gift. And when the gods of love decide your marriage needs a boost, they never do it by halves.

TRC:  Your premise includes the Greek gods of love – Pothos, Himeros and Anteros. Will each ‘god’ have a storyline in the trilogy?

Jennifer:  Yes, I’m intending to have a series of erotic romance stories, each featuring one of the Greek gods of love, so that any of the stories can be read either as a stand-alone or in sequence. Book 1 was the story of Pothos, god of sexual yearning, and his interaction with long-time married couple, Jake and Jeannie. Book 2 will be about Himeros, god of sexual desire and his developing relationship with career woman, Gina. Book 3 will be the story of Anteros, god of requited/unrequited love, and a couple’s adventure in his sex club. Potentially the series could be bigger than a trilogy, with Eros or even Aphrodite having their own story, though at this stage I have only envisioned the three.

TRC:  Your next instalment in the trilogy is APHRODITE CALLING. Will you tell us something about this storyline?

Jennifer:  After PLATINUM PASSION, I began to wonder what would happen if one of the gods of love grew world-weary. Would he be able to continue helping others in their path to desire, or would he need time out? Would he need someone to help him instead? That is the central premise of APHRODITE CALLING. Himeros is called to arms by modern career woman, Gina, who needs a fiancé in a hurry for a high school reunion, and a lesson in desire. Could their meeting be what Himeros needs to jolt him out of his own world-weary state and into a hotbed of desire with the woman of his dreams? Let’s hope so!

TRC:  Will you reveal any information about your novella (#3) for this series?

Jennifer:  The working title is SEX CLUB SECRETS, and tells the story of Anteros, god of requited/unrequited love, who has settled into modern life as the owner of a sex club. Anteros is a naughty boy at heart, and he has a whole lot of fun with two people who need the blinkers removed in order to see the truth directly in front of them.

TRC:  Your most recent release was EDUCATING ETHAN. Will you tell us something about the premise of this storyline?

Jennifer:  As an older woman myself, I wanted to write an older woman/younger man love story, but I didn’t want to use the classic “cougar” concept of a predatory older woman seducing/educating a young man in the ways of love. So, while I called the story EDUCATING ETHAN, I built in a bit of a twist. As the story progresses it becomes increasingly unclear just who is educating whom. I hope that readers will ultimately see this as a story in which two people fall in love and have to deal with the emotional baggage we all bring to a new relationship, regardless of age. Here’s the blurb:

Ida Deloraine intends to build herself a new life and a catering career, after a painful divorce. When the much younger Ethan Holt moves in across the street, an innocent flirtation quickly becomes serious when the two realise their age difference is no barrier to all-consuming passion. But Ethan is the exact opposite of what Ida is looking for in a sexual partner. In her eyes he is young and vibrant, with his life and his dreams still ahead of him, whereas hers are all in the past. Can Ethan, who is fighting his own demons in the form of a car accident, failed marriage and forced career change, convince Ida to overcome the past and live for the moment? And just who is educating who in this cougar encounter?

TRC:  Many readers like to read series. Many of your novels are stand alone. Which do you consider more difficult to write—stand alone or serial storylines and why?

Jennifer:  I don’t think there is one or the other that I prefer, though I’ve only written the first two in a series thus far, so maybe it becomes more difficult as you progress a series. I can imagine reader expectation based on previous books in a series could weigh quite heavily on the shoulders as a writer. For me, each story is unique in itself, and I don’t have a preference. My stories are (so far!) all set in contemporary Australia, a place I know well, so it is more about getting into the characters’ heads each time, rather than building a world that needs to be sustained, as with a fantasy series, for example.

TRC:  Erotic Romance Fantasy is directed at readers over 18 years of age, but the age of electronic books and internet, allows for the underage reader access to many novels and storylines. What is your opinion with regards to minors reading adult 18+ erotic fiction?

Jennifer:  A definite no in my view. My children are teenagers and they haven’t read any of my work, and they won’t do so until they are 18+.

TRC:  Some authors cross the line between erotic to pornographic. Where do you believe the line is drawn with regards with erotic fiction and fantasy?

Jennifer:  For me, the key word is romance. In erotic romance, the developing relationship is key, as is the potential for a happy ever after ending. The story is not about sex for the sake of it, but the sex is only one component of a bigger whole that includes an emotional connection potentially leading to love. I write erotic romance, and I love reading hot stories, but my personal preference is for sensuality rather than straight sex.

TRC:  Have you ever consider writing a Young Adult storyline?

Jennifer:  I have considered writing a YA story and have a couple of ideas at the moment that I’m working on, but nothing concrete to present as yet. I love reading YA and would really enjoy tackling this genre.

TRC:  What are you currently working on?

Jennifer:  I’m rewriting a chunk of APHRODITE CALLING that wasn’t working, and I’m also working on SEX CLUB SECRETS. Once those two are finished I have an idea for an erotic fairy tale based on the story of the princess and the pea, and I’m also at the planning stage of a romantic suspense novel. So there is plenty to keep me occupied at the writing desk!

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer:  I would like to say thank you so much for having me here to visit. It has been fun!

PLATINUM PASSION by Jennifer Lynne-a review

PLATINUM PASSION BY Jennifer Lynne

FROM THE AUTHOR’S NOTES: As always in Greek mythology there are many different versions from which to pick and choose, and researching the erotes was not exception. The most popular belief seems to be that the erotes were a group of winged gods who were the children of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and sexuality who was born from the foam of the sea, and that the Greek god Eros was either their father or one of their brothers.

Another belief, and the one that resonates best with me, is that the erotes were in fact different aspects of the primal god, Eros. Erotes is the plural of eros (desire),and as an erotic romance writer I was fascinated by the idea that the concept of love is so complex that its various aspects could only be personified across several beings.

While the erotic author in me applauds the idea of the greatness of Eros, I also love the idea that his power, and therefore that of the erotes, stems primarily from a woman, the Olympia goddess Aphrodite (sometimes called Venus in Roman mythology).

Aphrodite’s influence will be evident throughout this series. But for now, my celebration of the ancient Greek gods of love begins with my gorgeous hero Pothos, who represents the aspect of sexual yearning. Jennifer Lynne

PLATINUM PASSION is the first book in romance author Jennifer Lynne’s Gods of Love series of short stories. Many authors claim to write erotic fantasy and fiction, but true to the definition, Jennifer Lynne’s Gods of Love series is pure erotic fantasy–18+

Jeannie is celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary reading a romance novel, when the cover model suddenly appears at her door. Beckoning her forward, Pothos-the god of sexual yearning-as the personification of the cover hero, stirs something deep within Jeannie, that has been buried for years. Looking back at her husband Jake, exhausted and asleep, beside her under the covers, Jeannie enters into a world of sandy beaches, warm water and a fantasy come true.

Pothos, as the god of sexual yearning, has come to Jeannie to sate her every desire, but Jeannie is madly in love with her husband. Real life has over-shadowed their intimate encounters as Jake’s new business venture takes up all of his time. Hoping to add some sexual intimacy back into their life, Pothos has ‘heard’ their desires and yearnings, and is more than willing and able to help the couple live out their fantasies.

Platinum Passion is a short story, with an erotic sexual storyline involving 2 males and 1 female. Using Greek mythology as a base for her Gods of Love series, Jennifer writes an interesting story of one couple’s desires to re-kindle the passion in their relationship. The storyline is erotic and fast paced, and perhaps one that could be read in bed, at night with a partner……or two!!

WOLF WITH A BONE by Shelly Laurenston

March 15, 2012

NEWS UPDATE!!

The antho title is HOWL FOR IT and Shelly’s story is called “Wolf With a Bone.” She also decided to take another trip back in time to the early 70s and give you the story of Dee-Ann Smith’s parents: Darla Mae Lewis and Egbert “Eggie” Ray Smith. Yes, that’s right. It’s the story of how a little “rescue” (some might call it a “kidnapping”) led to the romance between the sweetest She-wolf in the South and the most feared wolf in Smith Pack history…until his baby girl came along anyway. His Sugar Bug.
