FINDING MY FAITH by Carly Fall -a review

FINDING MY FAITH (The Six Savior Series) by Carly Fall

FINDING MY FAITH (Six Saviors #2) by Carly Fall

FINDING MY FAITH is the second instalment and January 2012 release in Carly Fall’s Six Savior series. I have not had the chance to read the intro novel-The Light Within Me, and I was worried that perhaps the premise would be lost, without the background information, but Carly Fall included much of the series premise throughout the storyline, which in my opinion, is great. I love an author that is able to blend the series premise into each story so that a new reader is not lost. The series is paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi.

Background: 6 saviors warriors from planet SR44: Rayner, Hudson, Noah, Cohen, Jovan & Talin. The warriors were sent to earth 211 years ago to stop and eradicate the 12 murderers who escaped from one of the moon colonies of planet SR44. The Colonists, as they were soon called, made their way to Earth, took the human body form, mated with the females and populated the earth with Colonist DNA. The savior warriors are part of the elite military from planet SR44, commissioned to remove the Colonists from Earth. The beings on planet SR44 are incorporeal bodies of mist and smoke, each bearing a different color, but in their corporeal bodies on Earth, their eyes will glow their familiar- planet SR44 color each evening. Rayner’s color is red.

Rayner Johnson is a warrior with a special gift. Unlike Hudson or Noah who had gifts that were welcome and useful, Rayner believed his gift was useless-with the ability to see spirits caught in the ‘ether’-the regions between life and death. But when Rayner, Hudson and Cohen are assigned to a case of 5 missing women, Rayner is stunned when he recognizes one of the missing females. Her spirit had inadvertently crossed paths earlier in the day with Rayner. And she was beautiful.

Faith Cloudfoot moved to Phoenix Arizona to start a life without the scrutiny of her overprotective parents. She was a restless child always on adventures and treks of discovery, and as a young woman she could no longer sit still and headed to the big city. With her long red hair, Faith was revered in the community of Native American Navajo. According to legend “The Woman With Fire for Hair” would join with “The Red Eyed Wolf Warrior’ and their son would heal the earth. Faith’s sense of unease increased daily-it felt like someone was watching and following her. But when she woke up in a cell with 4 other women, she knew that what she was sensing was real. Unable to recall what had happened, Faith realized that her now drug-induced spiral would only get worse, when her spirit separated from her body. With her corporeal body hovering close to death, Faith was desperate to make contact with the only person who could see her spirit.

Faith had no idea why she and the other women had been abducted, but the only person who had the ability to ‘see and talk’ with her was a tall, gorgeous warrior-like man. With his ability to communicate with Faith, Rayner soon recognized that her kidnapping was not just a part of a series of abductions, but one that was connected with the Colonists that the warriors were commissioned to hunt. Using the information gathered from Faith, Rayner and the others located the abandoned and hidden entrance to an underground cell, where the only woman still breathing was Faith. The common link between the 5 women-all the missing females had red hair.

The relationship between Faith and Rayner had its humorous moments when it appeared Rayner was constantly talking to himself, while communicating with Faith’s spirit. The couple worked well together as Faith’s spirit directed Rayner in the search for her body and talking with her parents about her abduction. But when Faith’s spirit and body were finally re-blended, Rayner’s demeanor was cold and aloof. But the smoke beings of planet SR44 had been taught that to fall in love while making love to a human woman would cease their immortal existence and they would begin to age as a human. But Rayner was not the first savior warrior to fall in love with a human woman, but he also knew that Noah’s mate was not entirely human. But falling in love is more difficult knowing that Faith’s feelings for Rayner are just as strong. And the Navajo legend of the Woman with Fire for Hair and The Red Eye Wolf Warrior would never come into fruition because of Raynor’s need to return home to planet SR 44. But it is Faith’s ability to ‘detect’ the possibility of the Colonists that was of interest to the Warrior’s from planet SR44.

Returning Faith to her parent’s care, Raynor soon realizes he has made a bigger mistake than just breaking her heart- he has put the Cloudfoot family in danger from the Colonists. But it is too late for the family when Faith is once again missing and her parents are no longer on this plane of existence. But his need for Faith overwhelms his desire to remain immortal, and Raynor goes on a search and rescue for the human female who would one day be his mate.

Finding My Faith and the Six Saviors series has an interesting premise. Blending sci-fi with fantasy allows for a broader audience in several different genres. The interesting use of the hereditary smoke and eye color added freshness to the story telling genre, that is always welcome to a voracious reader, such as myself. I am looking forward (or backward) to reading her first book in the series-The Light Within Me. I have no problem recommending this series. Six Saviors Series by Carly Fall.

Jessica Andersen’s-Typos from Hell

One of the great things we love about Jess Andersen, besides her writing, is her sense of humor.  Jess enjoys sharing with her fans the “many” typos she makes as she writes her fabulous stories that entertain us.  Here are some of her fun typos.  You can find all of them on her website… www.jessicaandersen.com

Doc Jess’s Typos from Hell

.. she held herself a little stiffy …

(What a difference the letter “L” makes!!)

… their bodies were still intertwined, like they’d been going at it hot and heavy with their moths rather than their minds …

(Is that a pair of mothballs in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?)

… she looked stunning, standing naked beside the silvery waterfall and the glittering poo that spread beneath it …

(All that glitters is not gold!)

“For Chrissakes, are we going to get moving, or keep purrying around?”

(Well, I guess ‘pussying’ has that cat connotation, after all)

… he bowed over the sacrifice, humbling himself before the gods of the ski.

(I’ve known guys who worship their cars, but really? A ski?)

… cut through her like a thousand shards of colored gas …

(Well, I guess if unicorns can fart butterflies, rainbows aren’t that far off…)

… in the new Nightkeepers’ novella, Crusty Skull!

(Er, that’d be Crystal, not Crusty. Two very different concepts, that!)

… deep down inside her, a big-assed case of merves took up residence.

(I hate it when I get a case of the merves!)

… at the sound, her rear exploded …

(Er, fear, maybe? Or else too many beans?)

Manhung in the Wild West

(This one I sent in an email to my editor, with the end result that we now call

the book ‘Well Hung in the Wild West.’ Which is pretty accurate, really- lol.)

…he was going to get a lot of head for that one.

(Um, that should be ‘heat’. Or perhaps not 😉

He was the moist irritating person she’d ever had the misfortune of meeting.

(I think there’s a creme for that.)

… he patted the cushion, inviting her to spit beside him.

(Or ‘sit’. Depends on her mood, I guess! LOL)

… it was her kinky weapon.

(Er … ‘her kind of weapon’? Yikes! Sticks and stones may break my bones,

but whips and chains excite me …)

… her heart broke into a thousand glittering sharts …

(No. Just no. <G>)

… testing the strength of the bone that connected them.

(Bond. And no further comment!)

… she choked up like it was a Louisville Slutter …

(a little Friday autoerotic asphyxiation, maybe?)

An Interview with Jessica Andersen

An Interview with Jessica Andersen

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to have the fantastic Jessica Andersen as our guest today.  Jess is one of our favorite authors, and we have given you a glimpse into her books all week.  So if you have not read them, it’s time you did so.

Without further ado…Jessica Andersen

Jessica, we at the Reading Café would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

JA: Thanks for inviting me for an interview!

TRC:Your website jessicaandersen.com has quite a bit of information about your foray into the world of writing.  Will you tell us something about you-the person?

JA: Well, I like traveling, outdoor sports, long walks on the beach … LOL. Kidding (though I do like all those things.) I guess my big take-home on me-the-person is that over the past few years I’ve gone from being a type A, goal-oriented stress ball to being a far more laid back human being who tries to enjoy each day, put family first, and not sweat the little things. I wouldn’t say I’m a hundred percent on all of it yet, but I’m definitely a much happier human being for learning to stop and take a breath now and then.

TRC: You say that you write ‘smart, sexy, high-impact romance’.  Do you consider yourself a ‘romance writer’ first or a writer of paranormal romance and why?

JA: I definitely consider myself a romance writer first and foremost, because the Happily Ever After is incredibly important to me, both as a reader and as a writer. I want to know that no matter what those characters go through (be it in regency, fantasy, romantic suspense, etc.), they’re going to have a wonderful, loving ending. I write lots of romantic suspense in addition to the paranormal romances, but both series are smart, sexy and high-impact romances!

TRC: You have stated that the Nightkeepers idea was basically an ‘ooh, shiny moment’.  Was it that simple,-while researching for an idea, and the Mayan calendar and its’ final prophecy, that triggered an entire series?

JA: It really was that simple. I was researching another idea, came across the idea of the 12/21/12 doomsday (this was back in ’06, when it really wasn’t in pop culture yet), and said “wow, I’ve got to write about that!”

TRC: The biography information on your website states you have an undergraduate biology degree and a PhD in genetics.  Has your education aided in the research and background information for The Final Prophecy series?  Have you been able to apply your education and knowledge to any aspect of your writing?

JA: My background has been invaluable in researching the Nightkeeper books (all my books, really). More importantly, it’s been a good tool for me to figure out when to stop researching. Just as a scientific paper only needs to contain the background info necessary for the reader to understand the experiments in that paper, a story only needs the details that are relevant to the characters’ experiences at that particular moment in that particular story. I try to keep that in mind when I’m writing, because there are lots of really cool details I’d like to include … but if I put them all in, the story would get lost!

TRC: You have a new series, to be debuted in 2013.  Will you tell us about your new series-such as genre and some background information?  Do you have a set number of books in this new series?

JA: Hm… I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. LOL- okay, just kidding on the death threat thing, but at the moment the new series is being kept under wraps. The only thing I can really say is OMG, I love writing it!

TRC: TYPOS FROM HELL..a wonderful and apt name for your mistakes and errors.  Many are so funny and humorous, and sexually suggestive.  Auto-correct is a nightmare and many people suffer at the hands of auto-correct.  When and why did you decide to let the readers into your editing hell?

JA: I’ve been Facebooking my typos for several years now (and later upload them to my website at http://www.jessicaandersen.com/Typos-from-Hell.html), and it’s definitely a reader favorite. I don’t really remember when or how it evolved, but I think it’s a fun way to involve people in my (sometimes insane) creative process and the naughty stew that my brain becomes when I’m writing.

TRC: Harlequin Nocturne series-The Royal House of Shadows was a project between 4 very popular and prolific authors.  Will you tell us about your experience writing ¼ of a storyline?  Will you ever consider doing a similar project again? Was there any problem with compliance, fluidity and story premise between the 4 authors?

JA:  The RHOS series was a blast to write! Gena Showalter, Nalini Singh and Jill Munroe are gifted storytellers and a ton of fun to bounce ideas off of. I’ve done a bunch of other continuity series (where authors get together to each write a stand-alone story that fits within a larger story arc told across multiple books), but this was the first one where the authors came up with the world themselves. We had a fab time brainstorming the Kingdom Realm, the Blood Sorcerer, and four royal siblings who must return home to save the day. I would totally do it again! Harlequin even made us our own website, with bonus content and downloads: http://paranormalromanceblog.com/royalhouseofshadows/

TRC: Who is your Muse?

JA: I think I am my own muse … not to be all egotistical or anything, but because there’s a piece of me in each of my characters, and I use that to really put myself in their heads. Rabbit’s character has always been one of the easiest for me to write, because I’ve so often felt like him—the person who has the best of intentions, but who personifies Murphy’s law. 😉

LIGHTNING ROUND:

FAVORITE FOOD- Pizza, as long as it doesn’t have too many veggies or any hairy fish on it.

FAVORITE DESSERT- Chocolate in all forms except covering jalapeno peppers (that is just a cruel joke, in my opinion, especially when one finds its way into an otherwise harmless candy assortment … BTDT).

BOXERS, BRIEFS, COMMANDO- Boxers!

DO YOU HAVE A HOBBYMountain biking

FAVORITE AUTHOR- Linnea Sinclair

FAVORITE BOOK- Richard Bach’s BRIDGE ACROSS FOREVER

WHAT BOOK ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING- I’m in-between books right now, but just finished up Suz Brockmann’s latest Troubleshooter/Team Sixteen book, and give it two thumbs up!

LAST VACATION SPOT– Vacation? What’s that? LOL!

Thank you, Doc Jess, for this great interview.  It has been such a pleasure working with you, and wish you good luck on Magic Unchained. For all of you who have not read The Nightkeepers….what are you waiting for? It’s a phenomenal series, and Jess Andersen is a wonderful author.

APHRODITE CALLING by Jennifer Lynne-cover reveal

APHRODITE CALLING by Jennifer Lynne-cover reveal

Sometimes it takes the power of the gods to reveal the woman within…

It’s here – the cover for my upcoming release, Aphrodite Calling (Gods of Love #2). Yay! Designed by the talented Kim Killion and her team at Hot Damn Designs, I think the cover captures the essence of my erotic romance about a post-op transsexual who wants to be accepted as a woman…and needs the power of an ancient Greek god to show her how to come out from behind the mask and embrace her womanhood.

Aphrodite Calling is the second in the Gods of Love series that began in Platinum Passion with Pothos, god of sexual yearning, and his menage relationship with a married couple in need of a spark in their love lives.

Gina: a woman with a secret past

Thirty-two year old Gina is forced to confront her fears when she attends a high school reunion. Fifteen years may be a long time for some, but when you’ve been through a life-changing experience, fifty years would not be long enough to escape the difficulties of the past. For Gina was born a man, attended high school as a boy, and she has only now returned in an effort to put paid to the past so she can begin to live her life without continuing fear of loneliness and rejection.

Himeros: god of sexual desire on the edge of burnout

Himeros is one of the erotes, an aspect of Eros, and as such it is his duty to answer the call of sexual desire whenever a human needs him. But he has been living among humans too long and his energy has waned. When he decides to accept one last call he finds a woman who is unique. A woman who answers his own call and offers everything he desires. And more. A woman who understands the whole human experience, from every perspective. Has he finally found the one with whom even a god of desire could find fulfillment?

After all, forever is a long time to be alone.

Each of the Gods of Love stories are designed as stand-alone novellas, but are united with a common theme: the erotes. In this version of the erotes’ myth, my gods of love are the children of Aphrodite and aspects of the primal god of desire – Eros. Each of these gorgeous gods has a role in modern day society – answering the call of desire and interacting with people in need. If you’d like the chance to try the first Gods of Love story before Aphrodite Calling is released, menage a trois romance Platinum Passion (a TRR Best Book of 2011 nominee in GLBT Fantasy Romance) is still only 0.99 cents at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or All Romance ebooks.

HUNTERS: Book #2 Eli & Sarel by Shiloh Walker (a review)

HUNTERS Book #2-Eli & Sarel by Shiloh Walker-a review

For the fans of Shiloh Walker’s Hunter series, the author is currently re-releasing all of the previous stories in ebook format.  Shiloh is hoping to release most of the storylines in 2012.

HUNTERS: Book #2-Eli and Sarel

HUNTERS:  Eli and Sarel is the second instalment in Shiloh Walker’s Hunter series. Elija Crawford is a hunter. A master vampire who’s only desire is to rid the world of the human scum that preys on innocent women and children. When a young human female is the next victim of her father’s murderous rage, Elijah must enact swift justice. Saving the life of the young child, Eli soon learns that there is a missing sister who may have fallen victim before he could bring her to safety.  But years later, his best friend Declan has mated, and Eli struggles with his loneliness.  Although he is often included in their sexual escapades, Eli continues to search for the allusive someone.

Sarel Chandler wants revenge against the vampire that destroyed her family.  As a young witch only coming into her powers, Sarel uses every means at her disposal to perfect the poison that would slowly kill the creature that took her sister and killed her parents.  With deadly aim, Sarel Chandler takes down Elijah Crawford for a crime that she has always presumed he committed.  But when the truth of what happened that night so many years ago is finally revealed, Sarel learns that Elijah had rescued her sister and she has been under his protection all this time. Now there is only one antidote to save the dying vampire –her blood has the power to reverse the effects of the poisons that continue to eat away.  Hoping to offer some semblance of apology, Sarel must allow Elijah to feed from her vein.  But the connection between the vampire and the young witch is so strong, that Elijah soon recognizes that Sarel will one day be his mate.

Sarel knew she was to be punished for her attack against Eli, but to her surprise, Eli had chosen to send her away- to a school for young supernatural beings-to harness and learn to control her powers.  And there was a bonus-she would be able to reunite with her younger sister.  But a five-year separation is difficult for both Eli and Sarel.  Although neither is aware of each other’s true feelings, Sarel knows that her attempt to kill Eli, has not fostered any friends with the Council.  Upon her return, Sarel believes that her punishment has only begun when Eli is paired as her mentor.  Believing Eli will enact revenge, Sarel’s feelings for Eli continue to surface only to learn that it was Eli who requested the pairing.

A strong sexual relationship develops between Eli and Sarel, but her self-esteem continues to plummet when she realizes that Eli is in love with his best-friend’s mate.  And to complicate matters, Eli is often included in the couple’s sexual fantasies.  Believing she will never be enough for Eli, Sarel begins to withdraw and Eli has no choice but to send her away once again.  But the couple now has a mate-bond, and although both refuse to admit their love and acknowledge their bond, the separation begins to slowly eat away at Eli and Sarel to the point that neither may ever recover.  It will take a not-so friendly push from the ‘other woman’ to force Sarel back to the only man she will ever love.

HUNTERS:  Eli and Sarel is an erotic, paranormal fantasy with plenty of sexual scenarios involving 2-4 people at any time.  But saying that, there is a storyline of love, betrayal and forgiveness, as well as the continued Hunter series of investigations and vigilante justice for those who have been assaulted or killed.  The anxiety between the couple is high, as neither is willing to admit to their true feelings, but the love and mate-bond will flourish and a HEA is always inevitable.  At one point I was worried,  when it appeared that there would be no way to affect closure for two people so hurt, yet so much in love, but Shiloh wraps up the story in a neat little package, whereby, even a young witch can tame a wild heart.
