CRYSTAL SKULL (a Nightkeeper novella) by Jessica Andersen

CRYSTAL SKULL by Jessica Andersen

CRYSTAL SKULL (a Nightkeeper Novella) by Jessica Andersen

CRYSTAL SKULL -written by Jessica Andersen, is a novella in the Nightkeepers series. Found in the anthology ON THE HUNT, Crystal Skull uncovers two of the missing children from the 1984 attack on the Nightkeeper compound, but never actually reveals the true nature of their origins.

Natalie Albright is an archeologist hoping to find a lost Mayan civilization, but the allure of the dig, has always been more than just a hunt. Natalie has always felt disconnected from everyone around her, and she is searching for something or someone, that will answer all of her questions. But her current excavation has unearthed more than a few trinkets. A crystal skull, no larger than a few inches, calls to Natalie, like a beacon, and she is sure, that the answers to her questions, lie with the skull.

JT Craig, a former military man, and more recently Natalie’s ex, has tried every means to send Natalie home-to dissuade her from her search of the ruins. As a defender and guardian, JT knows that the Mayan tales of winged creatures known as the camazotz, are not horror stories, but real life evil, that has been gaining power and momentum with the approach of the Mayan Final Prophecy of 2012. Hoping his rejection would send her home, he is shaken when he realizes she has continued her search and is placing herself at risk for attack.

Natalie requires JT’s knowledge and assistance, but when she attempts to make contact, she is attacked and poisoned by one of the winged camazotz. Hoping he isn’t too late, JT uses all his fire-power to destroy the creature that has dared to hurt the woman he still loves. With his assistance, Natalie must tend to her wounds, but slowly succumbs to the poison, rendering her in a deep sleep. Thinking Natalie should be asleep for hours, JT recalls how he hurt Natalie, by breaking off their relationship, in order to save her life. But Natalie’s body does not metabolize the poison as does a normal human, and she awakens rather quickly, with little residual affects.

When JT, once more tries to send Natalie home, she realizes that he was responsible for shutting down their excavation, but not before, the local natives, surround the dig, with enough fire power to take out a small city. Sensing that JT has been lying, Natalie explains about her ability to sense and the lure of the crystal skull. Shocked, JT begins to suspect that Natalie has powers that she is not aware she is using. Before JT is able to question, Natalie recounts a history of the Nightkeepers, realizing that JT may be one of their descendants, but it is an angry JT that denies he is one of the warriors. His family has always ‘served’ the Nightkeepers as winikins, and he refuses to enter into a world of servitude even for the sake of the others.

Natalie explains to JT that she believes the crystal skull is part of her legacy. But when JT goes to retrieve the skull from the jeep, he realizes it has been stolen and the couple is once again under attack from the winged creatures. Nearly defenseless, Jake is surprised when Natalie comes to his rescue, and announces that she will stand and protect him as much as he will do for her. Their shared secret and knowledge of the Nightkeepers history, mobilizes their loyalty and fidelity to one another. With her ability to sense the crystal skull, Natalie and JT head into the jungles hoping to find the artifact.

Like an animal stalking its’ prey, Natalie quickly finds the nest of the camazotz hidden within another archeological ruin. But when Jake leaves to gather more manpower, the lure of the skull is too much for Natalie, and she enters the mouth of the cave in search of the crystal.

Finding the crystal skull, draped around the neck of one of the largest winged creatures they have seen, Natalie attacks the demon and rips the skull from its’ neck, but it is an enraged JT that must watch his mate, single handedly attempt to retrieve the powerful object. Knowing what she must do, Natalie is prepared to make a sacrifice with the crystal skull, to save the lives of everyone around and possibly the lives of everyone on earth.

Crystal Skull is a short story, that is somewhat disconnected from the main storyline in The Final Prophecy series. Although the background information and stories are related to the main series, Crystal Skull and its hero and heroine, seem to be outside of the norm. With little reference to the other Nightkeepers and their struggles to save the world, Crystal Skull, could very well be a stand-alone novella. None of the major players from The Final Prophecy are referenced, but then again, JT and Natalie do not know that any of the Nightkeepers or Winikins survived the attack of 1984.

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa – a Review

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa – a Review

Book Description:
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity. Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters. Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

Review:
The Immortal Rules is the first book I have read by Julie Kagawa, and I have to say, I am very impressed.  Lately, I have really enjoyed some of the YA books that I have read, which includes The Hunger Games, Divergent and Graceling.  Now that I have finished The Immortal Rules, I can safely say this is being added to my list of books that are a must read, as well as the author.

The Immortal Rules is another vampire book, but yet so different.  This is the first book in Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. The young heroine in this story is Allison (Allie), who at the start is fully human, living in poverty in a vampire ruled world.  The worldbuilding in this is awesome, and very interesting.  It is a story of survival, brutality, and how far you will go to survive….at what cost to your humanity.

The Immortal Rules starts a bit slow, as we learn about the world that Allie lives in.  Along the way, the story changes, keeping you constantly moving, and unable to put the book down, the last 2/3 of book is mesmerizing and very exciting.  The Immortal Rules is totally about Allie, who early on hates vampires, and then when she herself becomes a vampire, she fights to keep somewhat of her humanity to live, despite the hunger that threatens to control her.

When she becomes a vampire, she is taught survival by a Master vampire, who turned her to save her life, a choice she had made as she lie dying.  At first Allie refuses to understand that she cannot live as she did as a human, and must learn to deal with humans, including friends who shun her, and want her dead.  Left on her own by her sire, she learns to find ways to deal with her hunger, and to hide what she truly is from the  humans she meets along the way.  Allie turns out to be a kick assed heroine, and her ability to fight off Rabids (creatures created from a disease that wiped out humans and vampires), and Vampires is super.

This world was truly dark, as you found yourself sympathetic to Allie’s situation, and her need to keep herself more human, then a monster vampire.   She meets up with a human group trying to run from vampires and rabids, as they travel to find their Eden; a place free of vampires and rabids.  They accept Allie, not knowing she is a vampire, and she finds herself falling for Zeke, the protégé of the leader.

Julie Kagawa does such a wonderful job of keeping this story flowing, excellent plots, twists, and with some excellent characters; such Zeke, a little romance; Jeb, the group’s cultish leader; Jackal, the vampire King, who is fully evil; the children, she tries not to care so much about; and Kanin, her Master vampire, who hopefully we will see more of in the future books.  The story is full of action, fight scenes, horrific deaths, but it is an awesome story, despite its dark contents.  Allie is a tough, determined and loyal heroine, whom you feel very strongly for her.  This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend, and the release date is April 24th.  I for one can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Sherrilyn Kenyon Exclusive

Direct from Sherrie Kenyon’s Facebook page:

Hi everyone!

Hope you’re having a great Friday 13th. I’m fresh back from New York with an update on the movies- I know how eager all of you are for news.

First, I can’t tell you how excited I am. This is going to be E-P-I-C. We couldn’t be in better hands for the this- I promise you. I haven’t seen the script yet, but I did get a copy of the treatment. Tom really outdid himself (I did get a peek at his upcoming Stronghold script OMG!! I can’t wait to see that movie. It’s going to be amazing, too. Medieval zombies?! What more could I ask for?). The best part is that Tom gets it in a way you won’t believe. He truly understands the characters and has an eye for the drama and humor.

And the ending…

We all gasped when we read it. You are going to LOVE it! I can’t imagine any DH or CON fan not adoring this. I promise. Tom has really remained very faithful to the characters and story. We also discussed the DH TV series and who the best POV character would be for it. I don’t won’t to let too much out of the bag, but I will say this…

OOOOOOOO!!!!!

It’s going to be great. Again, I can’t imagine any fan not absolutely loving this. Imagine seeing the Peltiers and Sanctuary live (along with Ash and all the DH). Ileen and Lawrence really wowed me with their ideas and suggestions. And yes, we discussed casting and they suggested names that I feel will be incredible assets should we be able to get them. Actors I know can more than carry those parts. But I don’t want to say anything more lest I jinx something.

That being said, here’s one teaser. The actor they want for Acheron… yes, he’s tall and he’s everything- E-V-E—R-Y-T-H-I-N-G- you dream of Ash being. Finger-crossed we can have him as Ash.

We are moving forward with everything and I will let all of you know as soon as I have more details. I can’t wait to share more!

Hugs!

Bear Claw Bodyguard by Jessica Andersen – a Review

Bear Claw Bodyguard by Jessica Andersen

Knowing that I am a big fan of Jessica Andersen, especially with the Night Keeper series, and I loved Lord of the Wolfyn, I decided to try and read her latest Intrigue book.  Bear Claw Bodyguard is a Romance mystery, which involves a ruthless underground drug ring.

Dr. Tory Bay is a scientist sent to the Colorado wilderness, to help find out why the woods are contaminated with a fungus that threatens to destroy the entire Bear Claw Park.   Jack Williams, a homicide detective has been removed from the case he was working on, and to keep him away, he is assigned to be the bodyguard to protect Tory.  Jack, while not happy with the assignment, plans to use this time to research the Drug Stare case in  the area called the Forgotten, convinced that the drug ring is still around somewhere hiding.

Both Tory and Jack, have no interest in another, or at least try to tell themselves that.  Jack wants remain where he lives in Bear Claw, and isn’t interested in someone like Tory, who is a professional.  Tory, has not intention of ever getting married.  She wants nothing to do with commitment.  Best laid plans do not always work out. Lol

Almost from the start, as both of them head into woods for Tory to do her research on the fungus, they are attacked by someone shooting at them.  They manage survive, and that does bring them closer, as the attraction builds up.  Once a few days later, while on the site, the SUV they were in was tampered with, and they nearly went over the cliff to their deaths.  Jack using his skills of survival, managed to pull Tory and himself to safety.  Shaken up by the near death experience, brings them together to consummate their relationship.  Jess Anderson, has a wonderful of personalizing these sexual encounters, as she has in the Night Keepers.  This makes her unique and I find it very endearing.

The end of the book is very exciting, as Jack and Tory try to find the drug ring, and are once again thrown into danger.  When the culprints are found, thought they did not want to admit it, they knew they were made for each other.  The book does end with them both going away to keep Tory safe, as I am sure sometime in the future, the next Intrigue book we address their ability to return.  I enjoyed the book very much.  At first I wasn’t sure I would, as I am not into romance mystery these days, but once I got into the story, I really couldn’t put the book down. Another wonderful book by Andersen.

The Nightkeepers Series by Jessica Andersen – Combined reviews

The Reading Café today begins our feature of the fantastic Jessica Andersen.  Jess, who is one of our favorite authors, has two current series, and today we will do combined reviews of her Nightkeepers series.  This is one series you will not want to miss, and her latest book in this series came out last week….Magic Unchained.   We will have a full review on Magic Unchained in a few days.  With the last book in this series coming in November close to the Mayan doomsday, you better hurry up and read this series.  Watch for our wonderful interview with Jess on April 18th.

The Nightkeepers Series – The Final Prophecy by Jessica Andersen

With the latest release of Magic Unchained in the Nightkeepers series, we thought we would do a short review of each book to bring you up to date on the series, or if you are new to Jessica Andersen’s wonderful series, you can follow along here.  Of course, you should go and buy the books and read from the start.

Night Keepers- Book 1

Nightkeepers was to me totally different then most paranormal books, with an urban fantasy theme.  It was very well written, great characters and an excellent story, with a Mayan theme.  Early on, Andersen gives a lot of detail of this theme and the background story of the Nightkkeepers.  The Nightkeepers are Mayan Warriors, the children of their descendants who died over two decades ago, in a bid to stop the demons and an ancient prophecy. Those who survived went into hiding, knowing that one day they would be needed to save the world.

Jessica Andersen has impressed me as an excellent storyteller, as she created some great characters.  As paranormal goes for warriors, this is different in that women play a big part in the Nightkeeper clan, as they are equal to the men.

As for the characters…I loved Strike (the future king) and Leah (excellent female heroine), right from the start.  They were a great couple; waiting for them to find a solution to what seemed like an insurmountable dilemma, made this intense enough to maintain the edge of the seat tension right to the end. I loved their romance.   I liked Rabbit, but more so later in the book, though not your typical hero.  I liked Anna, but she didn’t have much of a story until closer to the end.  But I really liked most of the new Nightkeepers, and look forward to their stories, so much potential. Jox was a good character, but did not like his stubbornness against Leah, but do understand why.  Though he was a supposed to be a good guy, I did not like Red-Boar, nor the way he treated Rabbit. .  Nightkeepers was an intense and exciting read from start to finish

Dawn Keepers – Book 2

Dawnkeepers belongs to Alexis and Nate, as the destined romantic couple in this story.  Though Nate fought his love for Alexis almost the entire story, you knew they belonged to one another right from the start.  What is nice about Andersen’s storytelling is that she keeps all the main characters fully into the story, blending them with the main couple of this story.  It’s like a family; they remain in your focus the entire way.  Though this was Alexis and Nate’s story, Rabbit, Lucius and Anna play a big part in this story.  In this book, Andersen showed more romance between Nate and Alexis, their difficulties, Nate’s inability to accept her as his true love, Lexie knowing he was the one, until the final showdown, which was very exciting (as well as earlier when they were trapped underground with the water). It was great to see the teamwork of all the Nightkeepers, and how they were becoming closer and together.

Great series, very exciting, excellent action trying to find the Mayan artifacts, and fighting the enemy demons.  The Final Prophecy series so far has been very addictive from start to finish.

Sky Keepers – Book 3

Skykeepers is Sasha and Michael’s story.  Amazingly, Andersen keeps things fresh, and exciting and you are captivated all the way through.  I loved this book, and really enjoyed Sasha and Michael.  This surprises me because Michael, has been mostly quiet in the previous books.

Sasha, unseen but mentioned in the first two books, turned out to be a great addition to the Nightkeepers team.  I loved how she turns out to be a royal..this was a surprise..  pretty cool…  Michael was a strange character, with a hidden life. But as the storyline unfolded, I really liked him a lot and was happy Sasha was for him, though it was a tough road for them.  Don’t know why at the end they did not get the mate branding.  I guess it had to do with the Mictlan or Muk in him.  But it was nice how Michael made up for that.

Rabbit continues to be a major character being developed and I can see why Andersen will end this series with his story. I like Anna, and wonder how this will end for her, since there is no Nightkeeper for her.  Hopefully, they won’t kill her off and send her Red_Boar..I did not like him, or her husband Dick.  As I have said before, it is great how Andersen keeps all the members of the Nightkeepers flow often into the storyline, even if they are not the main character in the story.  It’s nice to see them all together, as friends and teammates. Andersen has done such a good job, you feel like they are your friends too. Lucius will most definitely be a Nightkeeper or something like that.  I think he is the next book, with Jade.  After reading three books so far, I have to say this is an exciting and fun series, with plenty of romance.  This is the key to the power for each couple thus far…the sex magic.

Demon Keepers – Book 4

In Demonkeepers, Lucius and Jade were the main characters, and Andersen continues to let all the other members of the Nightkeepers play important parts in the storylines. Lucius, who in the first book was a geek, who worked for Anna at the University, but after having been possessed by a makol demon, he has totally changed physically and mentally in this book, very much like all the other Nightkeeper warriors.

Jade feels she is destined for more then being a lower level bloodline (Harvester-researcher), and wants to be a warrior like the other woman.  She has feelings for Lucius, and this increases over time, as well as Lucius coming to the understanding that Jade loved him as a Geek or a Warrior.  Lucius was destined to be the Prophet and Jade a spell caster.  Together they were a great couple and I thoroughly enjoyed their story, which also allows Jade to discover who her mother was.

 Blood Spells – Book 5

Blood Spells was Patience and Brandt’s storyline.  Though in Demonkeepers, you knew by Patience sneakily finding the whereabouts of her children, that the next book would be hers.  I actually wasn’t looking forward to their story, as throughout the series, they were the quietest.  But upon finishing Blood Spells I loved their story, as Patience and Brandt turned out to be a great couple.  Though already married before the Nightkeepers were brought together, they started to distance themselves, especially after the twins were sent away for safety.  What made this story different was that it showed a different aspect of the difficulties of fighting this war, since they had children and the emotional turmoil that made it that more difficult for them.   They both had to face their past and begin to trust one another to bring themselves together again.  Brandt becomes the first member of the Triad and Patience with her great ability (invisibility) was a great warrior.  Sad though, that my gut feeling that Anna will die is coming to fruitation.  Rabbit is destined to be the most powerful warrior by the end.  Great ending with Hannah and Jox, though I question this, with Anna sick, the war, and Strike needing him.  But I guess he deserves happiness and he will take care of the twins.  I continue to be amazed how Andersen creates the Mayan world, the 2012 end of world prophecy, their customs, demons, spells, and writes it so well. She totally brings you into this world, though modern day, it is totally revolving on the Mayan prophecy.  Anderson brings her impressive amount of research and detail about Mayan mythology to each story.

Storm Kissed – Book 6

Upon completing Storm Kissed, I have to say this (the Final Prophecy) is such a great series.  It is Urban Fantasy at its best, where Jessica Andersen uses Mayan history/mythology, using Gods, Legends, Demons, End of World date and creates our Nightkeepers to try and save the world. She does this using modern day, and it works so very well.  Andersen has also done a wonderful job in each book bringing together all the couples (destined mates), and yet keeping all of the characters in the storyline throughout.   This is what makes this series so good, is that you feel like part of the team, they are your friends and you care about them.

Storm Kissed was such a good book, with a great couple.  I seem to say this after I read each book, but surprisingly each of the mated pairs are well written and you can’t help but like them all.  This was Dez (the bad boy) and Reese’s story.   Dez surprised me, I did not expect him to be such a great character, and I loved him with Reese.  It was an excellent story, and though you knew of Dez from the beginning, you really never meet him until this book.  Their relationship goes far back, with a lot of flashbacks telling their history between them; it was a bit complicated, yet interesting.  All the Nightkeeper men are tough warriors, but Dez was more so, and the story was exciting, full of action throughout. The amazing thing about this book, is that Andersen catches you with a surprise, as she changes the game in the 6th book of the series, which is rarely done, and with probably only two more books to go to end the series.  I have mixed feelings about Strike’s sacrifice, and what it will mean for Leah, Anna, and Sasha.  Strike started all this from the start, so this is an unexpected and interesting move by Andersen.  But it did change things for all of them for the better, turning the tide somewhat.  I really love Dez and Reese, but not sure I would have done that.  So it should be interesting how Andersen will handle this. I loved Cara coming back, and now the leader of the winikin.  This was a nice change, and love the coyote “Mac”.  It was great to see Anna get better, and I do hope there is something in the future for Anna. Then we shall get Rabbit and Myrienne to end it all.

Nevertheless, this is a great series. Not to mention, I am a major fan of Jessica Andersen. I love how she writes her stories, and how she puts a personal touch within the couples.

Beiron Andersson-The Interview

BEIRON ANDERSSON-Photographer & Model

The Reading Café is pleased to welcome Beiron Andersson-photographer and model.

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Beiron via phone, on his way to the airport. After a bit of talking back and forth, we got down to business. About ONE hour later, I had enough information for 3 interview posts.  I hope you enjoy this small portion of my interview with Beiron, as much as I did.

Sandy: HI Beiron. Your pictures have become very popular on some of the author’s interactive websites and that is how we have recently been aware of your modeling career.

BEIRON: Quite some time ago, back in the time when I modeled a lot, I had a lot of offers;  people that wanted me to do the book covers, but I decided not to do it.

SANDY: With Romance Cover models, sometimes you peg yourself into a corner and you can’t get out of it, and that is all they see.

BEIRON: Correct. You have to make sure, and there is nothing wrong with that, if you happen to be THE hit. Then of course, you don’t have to do anything else.

SANDY: That’s right. Exactly. I have already interviewed Tracy James and he did over 1600 covers, that was his thing back then (back in the 90s), but he was also into the body building and fitness. That was his livelihood. He says he is basically retired now, and he doesn’t get the calls anymore. But once you hit your 40s, as we all know, you have to start looking into something else.

BEIRON: That is the time to re-launch. That is exactly what I am doing.  I started a few weeks ago.

SANDY: Does it have to do with your photography business?

BEIRON: No. I will continue to do my photography business, which I have been doing forever. But I will be heading back and approaching modeling again.

SANDY: Have you looked into different aspects or different angles? Going back to magazines or fitness?

BEIRON: I am going back to fitness, but with that I will most likely have a lot of other things coming along. That’s the plan. As a model (most of the time) since I am not that tall, they don’t want you working out too much-you get too thick and look stalky in pictures. When I started, my first month modeling, was for Levi’s. When I went to try the jeans, I could not pull them past my knees, because I was lifting a lot. I had to slim down (quickly).  But this time I am not worrying. I am not going to start into a lifting craze, like back in time, to get size wise, but I am definitely working towards fitness.

SANDY: Have you approached different companies? Or have different companies approached you?

BEIRON: In December, I was the photographer on the European Next Top Model and they wanted me to be on the judging panel, at the end of the month. As part of the panel, they had 2 hosts, a male and female, and one was the ’95 Bond girl for Golden Eye, a celebrity stylist in Hollywood, and the director for the Next European Top Model.

As soon as we sat down, the director for Next Model asked if I was still modeling and I said no. He asked if I was still represented, and I said not really. My last representation- my agent in Paris retired. He asked if I would like to and I answered …..”Sure. Can you make me money?” And he answered….”Why not!!”  He started taking pictures and working on it right away. That is when I started to think again about modeling.  And then I was asked to do a shoot together (with a hostess) for a European job, that I did the week after. Something to jump-start all of that.

SANDY: That’s right. There has to be a starting point. The fact that you went back to Europe – they recognize you there, as well…probably more so.

BEIRON: It gives me time, if I want to start again. My children are older, I can start travelling again and that is one of the reasons I stopped modeling. I didn’t want to be on the road all of the time. I didn’t want to be away from home. And I was waiting for the day, for the market, when I got a little older.

SANDY: Yes. When the kids are younger, you don’t want to be away all of the time.

BEIRON: Yes. And as a model, back in time when I was really hot as a model, it is a whole different market for the older guys. It used to be, when you were 30-45 and had ‘salt and pepper’ hair, you were making a killing because there were very few guys out there that worked. There were very few guys that did modeling at that age. Either they lost the look, or they had a girlfriend, having a family and the wife or girlfriend didn’t want you working. Or they were in my situation where they had kids and a family and you don’t want to be travelling all of the time.

SANDY: That’s true. That’s exactly right. When you have young kids, you don’t want to be away from the children all the time.

BEIRON: It was a great market. But then all of a sudden, about 8 years ago or so  it all disappeared. It was a dead market for the older guys.

SANDY: What do you consider older? Over 30?

BEIRON: Well, when you think of someone who represents (for example) the corporate or the suit-guy. We think of someone that can be the ‘dad’ or the office manager or something like that. That is what I mean by older. 30 and up, when you become the suit-guy, when you are representing the guy that plays golf rather than playing rock and roll.

SANDY: We have read that you first came to the United States as a student. Is this correct?

BEIRON: I actually came as an exchange student in high school so that I could brush up my English. That was my objective…my reason. I went to high school in Northern California.

SANDY: You started your modeling career around 1990?

BEIRON: I did.

SANDY: Did you get your degree in North America or in Europe?

BEIRON: I have 2 different degrees. I have one in social science in Sweden and I have one in business from here.

SANDY: Did you meet your wife in Northern California or in Sweden?

BEIRON: I met her here when I came as an exchange student. We have been together a long time.

SANDY: What were your interests at the time, when you first came to California?

BEIRON: I was always into sports and athletics. I ran, skied, played hockey outdoors and sports. That was my main interest.

SANDY: Of course, in Sweden and all the outdoor winter sports as well?

BEIRON: We have a lot of winter sports. I grew up with ice rinks and the skis were outside the door, and we skied down the hill. And the ice rinks were a block away. And when we were younger, we would take the garden hose and make our own outside.

SANDY: Several sites report that you worked as a fitness trainer, prior to starting your modeling career. Are you still working out or training other people?

BEIRON: I am not training other people at this time, but I am training myself.

SANDY: What is your daily regimen?

BEIRON: It varies. I try to get a little cardio every day, and I lift weights, in different forms, 5 days per week. Right now, I am actually on my way down to the fitness expo in LA, where I am representing a fitness company called ALPHA STRONG.

SANDY: Alpha Strong. What do they promote?

BEIRON: They make sandbags. Sand balls, sand bags, which replace a lot of other weights like kettle-bells and dumb-bells

SANDY: How did you get started in the modeling industry? Where you discovered when you were working as a fitness trainer or discovered while still in school?

BEIRON: When I was living in Northern California, in a smaller town, people approached me and asked if I would be interested in modeling. But there was no market where we lived. So, when I opened a gym, in the smaller market in Northern California, I went down to LA with (my financers) for setting up the gym. I had some extra time on my hands, so I looked up the people who had approached me before and there was a lot of interest in representing me as a model. And that is how I started.

I was expecting to work a few hours here and there to supplement my income and it became a full-time job.

SANDY: Many print and fashion models do NOT do nudes etc, but there are several photographs of you, without clothing. Most are very discreet and tasteful. Do you have any regrets about posing nude? What advice do you have for new models and nudity?

BEIRON: I have no problem with that myself. It is a matter of what you do with it. You have some that are very well done-tastefully done. And you have stuff that is very raunchy. I have never done anything like that. And as a photographer, I work on that side as well. And this is where you find the best photographers in the world. When they do their own books, like some special fashion photographers there is always some photography on nudes. And the reason they do it, is because it is the most difficult to photograph-to look great.

Most people photograph nudes making them look cheap, tacky and tasteless. With most nude photo shoots, to make them look tasteful, it is one of the most difficult things to photograph. And that is why with a lot of the top photographers, that is their pride and joy when they come out with a book. The nudes look beautiful and tastefully done.

To photograph a bird, or a dog or a landscape is much easier than a nude. A lot of things have to click.

SANDY: Do you have a book of your own photography?

BEIRON: No. I do not. I have been-wanting to do it for along time, but it is a matter of finding time.

SANDY: Have your children kept up with your modeling career? What is their response to their father’s popularity as a fashion and print model?

BEIRON: Not really. They know and they thought it was ‘dumb’ of me to quit but it is not much of an issue. It is not something we talk about. It comes up when other people talk about it.

SANDY: Do any of your children have modeling or acting aspirations? Would you encourage the younger generation into the field of modeling or would you give them warnings?

BEIRON: Not really. No. Warning? I would definitely warn, especially with the women. A lot of the time they start too young. It is not a problem to start modeling at a young age, but it is a problem when parents and agencies send the young girls overseas or sending the girls to New York when they are 14-15-16 by themselves into a ruthless business.

If they are working, and have good guidance and someone with them- then great. If the daughter really wants to do it, they let them go, believing that the agency is going to be there taking care of them- sometimes they do, but most of the time-not. They are there for business-to make them a star.

SANDY: Speaking of–You did a campaign with Anna Nicole Smith. Sadly, she was a product of too much, too fast etc. What was it like to work with Anna back in the 90s during the GUESS campaigns etc?

BEIRON: She was probably a product of her background. She came from Texas to California to do Playboy. She was playmate of the year and at that point, GUESS picked her up and that is when we worked together.

SANDY: Did you ever stay in contact with her? A lot of people stay in contact with the people they have worked (with).

BEIRON: No. There was no reason. I had a wife and kids. There was no reason to stay in contact. I have stayed in contact with a lot of people that I have worked with, but it depends on the kind of relationship. It depends on the other ‘parts’.

SANDY: True. If there is any ‘reason’ you have to stay in contact.

BEIRON: Yes. If you work with someone, sometimes it is not healthy to have a relationship and others you stay in contact-forever.
SANDY: In your photography business, do you photograph a lot of professional models?

BEIRON: I live in a small Northern California town and there is no market. I don’t work with a lot of models per say.  If I lived in LA or New York, most of the people I photograph would be used to being in front of the camera, and they are professionals and come from all over the world. I have to find the talent locally, and if someone is not a model but maybe wants to be a model, it becomes a whole different relationship- a whole different way of working.

That has been my life for awhile- you have to guide and create.  Meanwhile, if you hire a model, like a top model from New York or LA, they know what they are doing. They create their magic in front of you- you don’t have to guide the model. They know what to do. It makes life easy. And that will come back to you.

This is the time and place for us. My wife and I have spent some time in this location, where we want to raise the family. In our town we have a lot of great friends and a great place to raise the kids. We have another year and half, and our son will graduate high school, and at that point will be the time to focus back on career. We can focus on us, and career. We don’t have to worry about the kids. It is not like you give-up, but you don’t have to be there daily, for them.

SANDY: That’s true, although at some point—They WILL come home!! (laughing)

BEIRON: Oh, I know.

SANDY: How did you maintain contact with YOUR family when you were travelling and modeling? You were still quite young. Do you stay in contact with your family in Sweden?

BEIRON: I had already moved away before I started modeling. We always had close contact. During my years as a model, it was actually easier because I went back home (a lot). I travelled quite a bit while I was modeling. I was in Europe (a lot), and if I worked in Paris or London, I could take a flight to Sweden and visit for a few days. Back during the time I was modeling, I saw them more than I do now. I was home at least 6 times per year when I was modeling. They would come and visit us once a year, but it is a little more difficult since I stopped modeling and did my photography, trying to build up my business.

SANDY: Do you still have family back in Sweden?

BEIRON: I do. I have one grandma and my parents. I have one brother. My brother is in LA.

SANDY: So what are you doing these days aside from the photography business and modeling career?

BEIRON: If you are doing photography, you really don’t have much more time. There is not enough time as it is. In between shooting, editing and so on, you have to try and limit yourself. Or you do not have time for anything. If I had a shoot today, I would be editing for the next 3 days from 6-11. That is the way my life has been for years. That is why I am re-gearing. I am tired of sitting in front of my computer-editing

SANDY: Does you wife go with you on your job shoots?

BEIRON: Not very often-once in awhile. Now that the kids have grown, we can travel together.

SANDY: Speaking of photography, you own your own photography business—Beiron Andersson Photography. Is there access to a website? Can anyone see your work?

BEIRON: Yes…it is under beironandersson.com

SANDY: What do you do to relax?

BEIRON: Relaxing for me is a good meal, sitting and enjoying good food or going for a run, hiking and working out.

SANDY: Tell us something about yourself that we do not know-for example: Did any modeling shoots go absolutely wrong?

BEIRON: We have a lot of them actually. As a model, it doesn’t always affect you (as much). It affects the photographer or the client when a photo shoot goes wrong. As a model you are hired for the day or hour. And if you have terrible weather and are not allowed to shoot at a location, whatever problems occur, the model is the one that does not have to deal (with it). The photographer and the client have to make it happen. They have to solve the problem.

If you have a swimsuit shoot, say in Barbados or the Bahamas, and a hurricane goes through and there is bad weather for a week, you have a crew sitting around; getting paid everyday and the costs are wracking up. That is a disaster for most clients. As a model you hear the money machine ringing. For myself, as a photographer, that is when it feels like a disaster. For a smaller company it can be a huge strain – an impossibility.

SANDY: What was your favorite modeling destination? What was the worst destination?

BEIRON: Favorite was Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. And the worst was Haiti because of the economy and the poverty. It wasn’t pretty.

SANDY: Any regrets?

BEIRON: We always have regrets.
