Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

With Bitterblue, the third book of Kristin Cashore’s series that began with Graceling, due to be released on May 1st, I thought it was time to post my reviews on both of the previous books.  This way you will have an understanding of this series, to see if you want to read it before the new book comes out.  We start with my review of Graceling.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore, is the first book in her The Seven Kingdoms Trilogy.  Having thoroughly enjoyed The Hunger Games, I had decided to read this series, as the feedback was awesome and very well compared to the other series.

The Seven Kingdoms is a mesmerizing world. A world full of magic, mystery, danger, and treachery.   Those blessed with perfect special abilities, such as fighting, mind-reading, cooking, farming, are known as Gracelings.  They  are easily recognized by their different colored eyes, and are exploited for their skills.  Gracelings are shunned by this world, and they are automatically sent to their Kings, to service under them.

We meet Katsa, who is the niece of King Randa of Middlun.  Katsa has the grace of being able to kill with her bare hands, since she was eight.  Being a niece to the King, she should have led a privileged life, but he used her powers to do his bidding.  She became his enforcer, a teenage assassin, with a reputation that follows her.   Katsa does not have courage to stand up to her uncle.  But she works behind the scenes with her cousin, guards, and other persons  to help those in need, and this secret group, allows Katsa to become a brave, and powerful warrior.

Katsa is sent on a mission to use her powers to persuade someone to do what the Kings wants, and to steal something for him.  During her mission, she accidently meets another Graceling; a man with silver and gold eyes. Having no choice, she trusts him not to reveal her identity and lets him go.  The start of a wonderful romance will begin.

In a short time, Lord Greening Grandemalion, who is the youngest heir (7th in the line to the throne) to Lienid, another realm., has arrived in the Middluns.  Po, as he is known,  is looking for his missing grandfather.   Po becomes enamored of Katsa, but she refuses to allow herself to be interested in him. She isn’t interested in men, dresses or having children.  She is afterall, a warrior…a killer.  But from the start, you can see their chemistry together, and Po turns out to be a dedicated pursuer, as he has become passionately in love with her.

Katsa is forced to stand up to the King, and leave Middluns, and Po goes with her, as they try to uncover the truth about the kidnapping of his grandfather. The journey is very exciting, as numerous times they face danger.  Over time, Katsa recognizes that she truly does love Po.  During their adventure to learn the truth, we meet 10 year old Bitterblue, a cousin of Po, who is the rightful heir of the Realm they were passing through, and they take her along with them, saving her from a sure death.  That is where we meet one of the worst villains in any story I have read, as his powers were truly scary.

In their fight to survive, Katsa must leave an injured Po to find help.   She and Bitterblue, must survive the dangerous elements to get to Lienid, and help, only to find the worst possible scenario waiting for them.  Katsa, in desperation, uses her powers to the fullest, to save them.  The trip back to rescue Po, with some of his family, is filled with surprises.  This was a very exciting story, great characters, and I can’t wait for the next book of this series.

Fire by Kristin Cashore – a Review

Fire by Kristin Cashore – a Review

“Fire” by Kristin Cashore is the second book, in her Seven Kingdoms Trilogy.  Fire is a prequel to the first book, Graceling.   It takes place 30 years earlier, where you also get to see the early days of the villain in making from Graceling.

Synopsis: She is the last of her kind… It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves. This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who
can control the minds of everyone around her.

Review:
Fire is the heroine in this story.  She is considered a human monster, because of her shimmering red hair. Fire’s unparalleled beauty is also her curse, for all those who look on her – human or animal alike – long to possess her, to woo her, to love her, to kill her. As a human monster, she is one of the most powerful, as she can read, and persuade people to do what she says.  However, Fire does not like to use this power. She lives with the memory of her father, Cansrel, who was the last King’s advisor.  Fire’s father was cruel, and abused his beauty and power by forcing many to his will, as well as torturing people and animals alike.  Cansrel close contact with the King, caused despair and discontent in the kingdom.  It is his legacy of depravity and fear that Fire continually has to face in the animosity of others. Besides the people, Fire always has to be on guard against the dazzling beautiful animal monsters, who are drawn to her, and want to kill her.

Having suffered all of her young life, Fire is scarred from all her battles and is determined to never have children, for she would never bestow her curse upon another.

Fire lives in a small village with Archer, and his father, who brought her up.  Archer, is like his name, one of the best archers.  He loves Fire, and she cares for him, but not enough to let him become too serious.  A war is coming, and new his King Nash and his brother Prince Brigan, who is commander of the armed forces,  enlist her aid to help them.  Though she is hesitant to be around others, Fire agrees and leaves Archer, and her quiet life in the Dells for the excitement and danger she will face.  She travels with Prince Brigan, who at first hated her for what she was, but over time this will most certainly change.  They journey to the King’s castle through different landscapes, allowing Fire and Brigan to get to know each other, though neither recognizes the beginning of their attractions.

Once the royal Nash family, gets to know Fire, they all begin to care for her, and see beyond the color of her making her a so called human monster.  She will eventually use her powers to help them find the betrayers, who have done serious damage to the kingdom.  The last third of the story is very exciting, as they must face the other leaders who want to overthrow the King. During the unraveling of the plots, Fire is kidnapped by a group, led by a young child, with persuasion ability.  This is the young child, who will grow up to be the villain we met in Graceling. She is eventually rescued, and Brigan faces his demons from his past, and they both consummate their love.  Throughout the book, there is the backstory of Fire’s father, which tells us more about her.  Excellent story, very different then Graceling, but as a prequel, it was done very well.  I look forward to the third book, Bitterblue, which should pick up where Graceling left off.

An Interview with Elisabeth Naughton

An Interview with Elisabeth Naughton

As most of you know, The Reading Cafe has featured Elisabeth Naughton this week. You have been able to read reviews on some of her books, to give you an idea on what you are missing, if you have not read them. We have also given an insight into Elisabeth with her Biography, as well as a detailed listing of all her novels. Now let us begin our interview.

Elisabeth, we at the Reading Café would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

EN: Thanks so much for inviting me to stop by today!

TRC: Please tell us about yourself

EN: I always wish I had a really cool answer to this question:  A former Olympic gymnast who won three gold medals, then turned her attention to writing…but alas…that would just be fiction. The real me is not quite as exciting. I have a Bachelor’s degree in science and a Masters in teaching. I live in western Oregon with my hubby and three kids and most days pray for sunshine (If you’ve ever been to the Pacific Northwest, you know why). We have two Dalmatian pups who are just over a year old and who pretty much run our household, and when I’m not writing I’m either driving carpool, hanging out at the baseball field watching my kids play or trying to figure out a way to get out of running with my girlfriends who are marathon runners (I am so not a long-distance runner). I love to travel, I love to read and I love to get lost in my characters lives. (Hm…that sounds like I want to escape…some days I do!)

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing?  We understand you started this later on, after staying home with your children.

EN: You’re right, I wasn’t one of those writers who knew she wanted to write from an early age. I was a junior high science teacher in my previous life. Loved teaching, loved the kids, but burned out fast because I was one of those teachers who took on everything – student council advisor, coached multiple sports, outdoor school teacher, etc. I started writing after taking a years’ leave of absence from my job and fell in love with the written word. For a science geek, that was quite a stretch (my principal once asked me to teach a language arts class and I said no way!), but the change turned out to be the best thing for me. Ten years later I can’t imagine doing anything other than writing romantic fiction. I’m thrilled I finally found a career I’m passionate about, and which pays me to do what I love!

TRC: What was your first book ever published?

EN: My very first published book was STOLEN FURY. It released in January 2009 and was a 2010 double RITA nominee for Best First Book and Best Romantic Suspense. The RITA awards are like the Oscars of romantic fiction, so it was a total thrill to be nominated with my first book.

TRC: How did you come up with the idea for your Stolen trilogy?  How did you decide to use Archaeology in this romantic adventure?

EN: Well, like I mentioned before, I’ve always been a science buff. When I was teaching I used to bore my kids with a lot of chemistry and geology. The idea for the Stolen books really grew out of my love for adventure flicks like Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone, and after I wrote STOLEN FURY I knew I wanted to write more linked books that featured treasure hunt themes.

TRC: The Stolen Trilogy is has been re-released as one book.  Can you give a brief description to those who have not read this series.

EN: Absolutely!

The Stolen books are three loosely connected romantic suspense books centered around an antiquities dealership in Florida. STOLEN FURY, the first book in the series, features a thief hot on the trail of three ancient Greek relics of the Three Furies, and the Archaeologist he teams up with along the way to find them. The second book in the series—STOLEN HEAT—features the owner of the antiquities dealership and the Egyptologist he fell in love with years before and lost. And finally, STOLEN SEDUCTION is about a race to find a rare and very valuable statue linked to a mysterious murder.

TRC: The Eternal Guardian series is Greek Mythology, what made you choose that theme?

EN: I actually came up with the idea for MARKED, the first book in the Eternal Guardians series, while I was writing STOLEN FURY. I’m a real sucker for Greek mythology and I did so much research during the writing of that book that I knew I wanted to write a new series linked to Greek mythology. One day while perusing a writer’s blog, someone commented that they’d love to see more about the heroes from Greek mythology, and bam, the idea for MARKED hit me out of the blue.

TRC: Enraptured is the 4th book in the Eternal Guardian series.  Give us a brief description of the book.

EN: ENRAPTURED is Orpheus’s book. Orpheus is not one of the Eternal Guardians. He’s Gryphon’s older brother, and because he was passed over to serve with the guardians, he’s had a major chip on his shoulder for years, usually to the point of doing whatever he can to undermine what the guardians do.  In TEMPTED, book three, Gryphon is injured in battle and his soul is sent to the Underworld. Orpheus feels responsible for what happened to Gryphon, and in ENRAPTURED he’s trying to find a way to rescue his brother’s soul. He doesn’t consider himself a hero, doesn’t want to be a hero, and doesn’t want to serve with the guardians. He just wants to set right a wrong that never should have happened. However, he never imaged he’d be distracted along the way by an attractive Siren—one of Zeus’s elite assassins—or that they would have an unexplainable connection that could just change everything about the Eternal Guardians.

TRC: How many books are planned for the Eternal Guardian series?

EN: I’m starting work on book six right now, and book seven will likely be the last book in this series. However, there are still three more characters I want to write books for in this world, but they’ll likely be part of a spinoff series. (At least that’s the plan right now.)

TRC: Wait for Me is different then either of the above series, being straight Romance. What made you write a standalone book?

EN: Every author has one book that is “the book of their heart”. WAIT FOR ME is that book for me. It’s not the book I wrote first, but it’s the story that got me writing. I wrote it years before I was published, but the published version is a hundred and eighty degrees different from that early version. Every time I’d learn something new about writing, I’d go back to WAIT FOR ME and revise. It is the book that’s been with me the longest, and it is the one that I could never let go of. I’m really happy with the final product and am so happy readers have a chance to read it. I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a full book for Mitch and Simone (a secondary couple in WAIT FOR ME) but haven’t yet decided.

TRC: Which genre do you consider your favorite to write?

EN: Anything with adventure! My first love will always probably be romantic suspense because that’s what I started out writing. But the transition to paranormal was easy because my paranormals include a lot of the same elements as my romantic suspense books–adventure, romance, fast-paced plots and lots of action. I really love both genres and enjoy bouncing back and forth between books. Keeps my muse happy and engaged.

TRC: What do you have planned for future books or series.  Are you working on any different series?

EN: Right now I’m working on a new romantic suspense series that will hopefully be available to readers in May 2012. I’m also working on a brand new paranormal romantic suspense series I’m super excited about.

TRC: Who is your Muse?

EN: Who? She doesn’t have a name. But if I had to describe her, I’d say she’s a lot like the Fates in my Eternal Guardians series. She’s wise, she wears diaphanous robes, and she never tells me what to do, just encourages me to get on with the writing and get busy writing romances my readers will love.

FAQ: Guild Hunter Series

I recently answered some frequently asked questions about the Guild Hunter series on the blog. I know not all of you drop by the blog, so here are the questions and answers:

Will there be another Elena/Raphael book?

Yes, absolutely. At this stage, I can’t confirm in which book they’ll take center stage again, but it won’t be too far off.

Will Elena and Raphael be having a baby?

There is no baby in their near future. Quite aside from the fact that the angels have a lower birth rate, you have to remember that Elena has only been an angel for a number of months according to the timeline of the books. She needs time to grow and settle into her new life.

Will Ashwini and Janvier from “Angels’ Pawn” get a book?

I love these two! I would very much like to write a book about them, but there is also the chance that their story will be told through the series. We shall see how things develop. As it is, you’ll see more of both of them, since Janvier is relocating to New York.

Stolen Trilogy by Elisabeth Naughton – a synopsis

Stolen Trilogy by Elisabeth Naughton

Since we have been featuring Elisabeth Naughton this week, we have been concentrating mainly on her Eternal Guardians series, as she has just this week released her latest book in the series…Enraptured.  But Elisabeth has an earlier trilogy that we thought you would enjoy.  Below is a synposis direct from Elisabeth’s site for you to read.

Stolen Trilogy

Stolen Fury – Book 1

Elisabeth Naughton: STOLEN FURY combines my love of Greek mythology and archaeology. The heroine, Lisa Maxwell, is a mini-female-version of Indiana Jones.

Synopsis:
To unearth a centuries-old secret, an archaeologist must team up with the rakish thief who’s stolen both an ancient relic and her heart…

Oh, is he handsome. And charming. And sexy as all get out. Dr. Lisa Maxwell isn’t the type to go home with a guy she barely knows. But, hey, this is Italy and the red-blooded Rafe Sullivan seems much more enticing than cataloging a bunch of dusty artifacts.

After being fully seduced, Lisa wakes to an empty bed and, worse yet, an empty safe. She’s staked her career as an archaeologist on collecting the three Furies, a priceless set of ancient Greek reliefs. Now the one she had is gone. But Lisa won’t just get mad. She’ll get even.

She tracks Rafe to Florida, and finds the sparks between them blaze hotter than the Miami sun. He may still have her relic, but he’ll never find all three without her. And they’re not the only ones on the hunt. To beat the other treasure seekers, they’ll have to partner up—because suddenly Lisa and Rafe are in a race just to stay alive.

Stolen Heat – Book 2
Elisabeth Naughton
The love story in STOLEN HEAT is a combination of all things I love most about reunion stories – lies, betrayal, a deep emotional commitment and two people who are meant to be together.

Synopsis:
His past tore them apart. Her lies thrust them back together. Now a killer’s out for revenge, but the biggest threat for both may just be the heat they thought they’d already lost…

Antiquities dealer Peter Kauffman walked a fine line between clean and corrupt for years. And then he met the woman who changed his life—Egyptologist Katherine Meyer. Their love affair burned white-hot in Egypt, until the day Pete’s lies and half-truths caught up with him. After that, their relationship imploded, Kat walked out, and before Pete could find her to make things right, he heard she’d died in a car bomb.

Six years later, the woman Pete thought he’d lost for good is suddenly back. The lies this time aren’t just his, though. The only way he and Kat will find the truth and evade a killer out for revenge is to work together—as long as they don’t find themselves burned by the heat each thought was stolen long ago…

Stolen Seduction – Book 3
Elisabeth Naughton:
When I set out to write this series, I never intended to write STOLEN SEDUCTION. But I fell in love with both characters—Shane & Hailey—who appear in both of the first two books. After I got to know them better, I couldn’t not write their story.

Synopsis:
The individual who collects all six statues and deciphers the code locked within will be awarded controlling interest in Roarke Resorts.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS ENDEAVOR IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH.

Hailey Roarke was never interested in her family’s fortune. That’s why she became a cop. But with her father and now her cousin dead, she’s suddenly on the wrong side of a police interrogation. The only way to clear her name is to solve the riddle before the real killer. Without getting killed herself.

Detective Shane Maxwell can’t deny the spark of lust he feels every time Hailey is near. But the woman is clearly hiding something. Trusting his gut—and the heat in her eyes—he joins her on an elaborate global treasure hunt staged by her late father. Caught between a sizzling seduction and a maniacal murderer, for Hailey and Shane the biggest reward of all will be making it out alive.

TAKING A SHOT by Jaci Burton-a new release review by Marcie

TAKING A SHOT by Jaci Burton

Taking a Shot
By Jaci Burton

I had never read anything by Jaci Burton before, but when TRC put the cover for Taking a Shot up I knew it was a book I had to check out. The main male lead is a professional hockey player and that’s my number one sport. I swear I was born in a hockey rink. Actually, I’ve been going to hockey games since in the womb so it’s in my blood. Nothing like watching a bunch of guys skating on ice after a rubber puck, jostling, fighting, roughing it up to score a goal. A very enjoyable way to pass an evening. So I had a feeling this book would be right up my alley. Not to mention the cover is damn hot. Okay enough of my ramblings about hockey, onto my review. 😉

Taking a Shot is part of Burton’s Play-By-Play series. I’ve only read this one and if it’s any indication for how she writes, she’s an author that can keep me interested in storyline and characters, especially of the athletic variety. Her athletes are definitely not lacking in the hotness department or stamina department, both on the playing field and the bedroom.

Ty Andersson is a professional hockey player who plays for the St. Louis Ice. He and his teammates have made it a habit of hanging out at Riley’s, a popular sports bar in town after home games. Ty had met the bar’s manager Jenna Riley through her brother Mick earlier on and now has become intrigued with her. There’s only one problem with that, Jenna has vowed to never date or fall for anyone involved in sports. Being the athlete he is, Ty never gives up on a challenge, and right now, Jenna is a challenge Ty has set his sights on.

Jenna Riley comes from a sports oriented family. Her two older brothers Mick and Gavin are professional athletes. Mick plays pro football and her brother Gavin plays pro baseball. On top of all that her family has always run one of the city’s most popular sports bars Rileys. No matter where Jenna turns there’s something sports oriented always popping up in front of her. From her brothers, to their friends, to work. She can’t seem to escape it. So when Ty Andersson walks into the bar one fateful night, Jenna decides that she needs to stay clear of him before something happens.

Jenna never saw herself becoming the manager of Riley’s Sports Bar, but after her father suffered a heart attack a year ago, she felt she owed it to her family to step up and take charge. In doing so Jenna put her plans and dreams on hold and never told her family about a secret talent she’s had all her life. It isn’t until Jenna starts seeing Ty that things begin to change for her. Even though she’s stated she’ll never date or fall for a guy involved in sports Jenna can’t seem stop the attraction or chemistry she feels for Ty.

As the relationship progresses Jenna keeps trying to convince herself she just hasn’t expelled Ty from of her system yet. It’s like she’s trying to exorcise some demon from her life, but instead she keeps falling further and further in love with Ty and doesn’t realize it, or at least won’t acknowledge it.

Not only is Jenna falling fast for Ty, but so are the walls she’s built up around herself. She starts to let Ty into her life more and more, even going so far as to confess her secret passion in life, singing and song writing. Ty convinces her to sing for him one night and from that moment on gets Jenna thinking that maybe she doesn’t have to put her dreams on hold or keep her singing and song writing a secret anymore. There’s only one problem, Jenna is afraid of failure. This fear of failing goes all the way back to the time she spent backpacking her way through Europe. She had joined up with a band and was living her dream singing in different bars and towns night after night until one day she was told she wasn’t good enough. From that day on she decided to keep her talent a secret.

Jenna isn’t the only one who’s built up walls to protect themselves, Ty has too, but for different reasons. Ty witnessed his parent’s marriage fall apart from an early age and decided that commitment and marriage wasn’t for him. He didn’t want to chance the same thing that happened to him when he was a kid to happen to a child of his own. However, the more time he spends with Jenna and her family Ty starts to re-think his ideas on love, marriage and commitment. He realizes that he’s falling for Jenna and maybe there’s hope for him after all. Ty realizes that if he can get over his fears of commitment and marriage, then maybe Jenna can get over her fears as well. Ty pushes Jenna to pursue her dreams and tell her family about her talent. Knowing this won’t be an easy task Ty is patient and allows Jenna to come to her own conclusions, even when she blows up at him and tells him it’s over. Being the ‘never back down from a challenge’ type personality Ty decides it isn’t over but gives Jenna the time she needs. In the end Jenna comes to realize she doesn’t want a life without Ty or her dream. She opens up to her family and sings for them, then tells them about her dream of running a music bar, where she can sing whenever she wants and promote other singers and bands. Being the supportive family they are, her parents and brothers are there for her and let her know they will always be. Once Jenna comes clean with her family and accepts who she really is she’s able to completely embrace what Ty has brought to her life and what they can be together. Jenna decides it’s finally time to go after what she wants and that’s a life with Ty and her music.

Being the hockey fan that I am I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Burton gives you action on and off the ice. It’s hot and heavy at times and other times very sweet and romantic. I enjoyed both characters and feel anyone who loves sports as much as I do will enjoy this book or any of Burton’s books in the Play-by-Play series. Even if you aren’t a sports nut you’ll enjoy this book too. Looking forward to back tracking now and reading the previous books in the series and then any future one’s she writes.

Play-by-Play Series reading order

-Changing the Game
-Taking a Shot
-Playing to Win (Sept 4, 2012)
