Laura Pauling-Interview with the Author

Laura Pauling-Interview with the Author

The Reading Cafe would like to introduce YA author Laura Pauling.

Short bio:

Laura Pauling writes about spies, murder and mystery. A Spy Like Me, her YA debut novel is available now. Her short story, The Almost Assassin, appeared in the In His Eyes Anthology and is free on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Long bio:

Laura Pauling writes about spies, murder and mystery for all ages where the real and the incredible combine for heart stopping and often hilarious adventures. Her YA debut, A Spy Like Me, released in April of 2012.

She lives her cover of suburban mom/author perfectly, from the minivan to the home-baked snickerdoodles, while hiding her secret missions and covert operations from the real world. And her kids wonder what she does all day while they’re at school; or why on Monday mornings she’s a bit grumpy. Living the life of a secret agent isn’t easy, but someone has to do it. But shh – don’t expose the truth to her friends and family.

This may or may not be what she really looks like.

And she may or may not actually bake cookies.

You decide.

TRC:  Hi Laura and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Please tell us something about yourself?

Laura:  I write about spies, murder and mystery while living the cover of suburban mom/author perfectly, from the minivan to the home-baked snickerdoodles. I hide my secret missions and covert operations from the real world. But shh don’t tell anyone.

TRC:  You are a member of the INDELIBLES indie author site. Would you please tell us how you became involved with this group of YA authors?

Laura:  I feel so blessed to have stumbled upon the Indelibles. We are there for each other, whether tweeting or blogging announcements, sharing good and bad news, answering questions and becoming friends! I was already blogging/writing friends with Susan Kaye Quinn and Addison Moore. When they learned I’d decided to self publish, they nominated me for the group.

TRC:  What do you find the most challenging about writing? About indie publication?

Laura:  Information abounds in the blogosphere: from craft tips to social media tips. I’ve read some terrific books on the craft of writing. I have the head knowledge, so my biggest challenge is applying that to my writing. I work on this every time I sit down to write. Writing is a journey and I will always be growing.

Indie publishing opened up a flood of creativity for me. So my biggest challenge is finding the time! I love this spy series but I have other mysteries I’d like to rewrite. I have new ideas, simmering in the background, begging to be told. So it’s hard to be patient when there are five different stories I want to be writing!

TRC:  Many authors bounce ideas and information between friends and family. With whom do you bounce your ideas?

Laura:  I don’t often share ideas with anyone until they are fully formed. At first, the idea is too fragile and often transforms over the course of writing the first draft. But when that’s done and I’ve already spotted and fixed the major plot holes, then I start sharing with readers and writing friends.

TRC:  A SPY LIKE ME (April 2012) is your debut novel. Would you please tell us about the premise?

Laura:  Sure, I’d love to. After dodging bullets on a first date, Savvy must sneak, deceive and spy to save her family and friends and figure out if Malcolm is one of the bad guys before she completely falls for him.

TRC:  How much background research was involved with this novel?

Laura:  A lot. I’ve never been to Paris, France. I read other books set in Paris to see how others authors handled setting description. I read blogs. I researched foods, way of life, weather…etc. I spent time on the Louvre website, looking at the floor plan and pictures. I used Google to zoom in on the streets of Paris. I loved the Youtube videos tourists put up – that really helped with details.

TRC:  How many books do you have planned for the series?

Laura:  Right now, I’m hoping for three novels. Depending on how sales go, I’ll write more. I also have five short stories to come out in the next six months based on the Savvy’s mother. We learn her story, history and understand the present danger. I also have the seedlings for a spinoff of a future generation of spies. I’m not sure if that spin off will be novels or novellas.

TRC:  Will Savvy and Malcolm continue to be the principle characters?

Laura:  Savvy and Malcolm will be the primary characters in the first three books. Maybe more? There could possibly be companion novellas and short stories based on the other characters.

TRC:  Will you tell us something about what you have planned for your next novel in the series?

Laura:  I’ll just say that Savvy feels the backlash from her experiences in Paris. The second story is set in Athens, Greece, and Savvy continues to make the necessary decisions to keep her family together even though her actions seem contradictory.

TRC:  What are you currently working on?

Laura:  Book two of course! J Plus I’m editing the short stories.

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Laura:  Thank you so much for having me. There are so many fantastic books out there that I truly appreciate the time and effort in your reading and reviewing A Spy Like Me.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food – Pizza. I’m a pizza-aholic.

Favorite Dessert – Easy. Chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven.

Favorite Movie – True Lies. The balance of humor, spy action, underlying themes of family, and over the top plotting perfectly reflects what I love to read and write!

Favorite TV Show – Castle. I love the wit, the creative storylines, the acting…and Nathan. They have some great writers behind that show.

Favorite Song – I honestly don’t have one.

Dark or Milk Chocolate – Milk chocolate. Dark is too bitter.

TRC:  Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. It is always a pleasure to meet the real person behind the author. We wish you all the best.

Laura:  Thank you!!!!!

A SPY LIKE ME (YA) by Laura Pauling-a review

A SPY LIKE ME (YA) by Laura Pauling

Tagline:

Stripping your date down to his underwear has never been so dangerous.

One sentence:

After dodging bullets on a first date, Savvy must decide how far she’ll go to stay alive and protect the ones she loves.

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Savvy Bent expects magic on her first date with Malcolm – in Paris! Except over a picnic of sparkling cider and strawberry tarts, a sniper shoots at them. That’s only the beginning. From the top of the Eiffel Tower to the depths of the catacombs, Savvy must sneak, deceive, and spy to save her family and friends and figure out whether Malcolm is one of the bad guys before she completely falls for him. Or he tries to snuff her out.

A SPY LIKE ME (YA) by Laura Pauling-a review by Carmen P.

I was first introduced to A Spy Like Me by reading the short story, Almost Assassin, in an anthology called In Your Eyes. Malcolm, an awkward 17 year old is trying to earn his rightful spot in the family business of…espionage. Under an assignment of simple recon, Malcolm is captivated by the equally youthful, Savvy Bent, his unwitting mark. While observing her daily routine, and finding her seemingly innocent of heinous activities, Malcolm receives an order to terminate Savvy. Distressed, but knowing this could and would propel him into his father’s good graces, Malcolm follows his instincts and trusts his heart instead: He asks Savvy out on a date!

Unlike the short story, A Spy Like Me unfolds under the perspective of Savvy. She has been living, unhappily, for the last 6 months in Paris, France with her father. Mom has been out of the picture for a year now, but those circumstances are complicated and slowly revealed throughout the story.

Against the backdrop of the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower, Malcolm and Savvy are enjoying “date night”. There is an undeniable attraction and their banter is age-appropriately flirtatious. In a playful attempt at getting Malcolm to explain what he likes about her, Savvy manages to strip Malcolm of his pants and ties his hands behind his back, leaving him in a precarious position. Fully intending to relieve him of his embarrassment and capture that first real kiss, it was a spontaneous idea after all, a shot rings out! Malcolm has been shot. Trying to keep the attention of the assailant on himself, survival spy skills at its finest, Malcolm convinces Savvy to escape to the Eiffel Tower and reconvene in half an hour’s time. Not to be outdone, Savvy, utilizes her own expertise and runs away in that recommended zigzag manner that forever endears herself to me. Who does that? Malcolm never surfaces.

Fretting all night and worried that Malcolm has bled to death, Savvy is floored to see Malcolm stroll in during her work day at Spy Games…HER family’s business. These two are obviously meant for each other, right? Two peas in pod and all that fateful kismet stuff? If it was that easy, this book would have been conventional and dull. A Spy Like Me is far from it!

Savvy is relieved to find Malcolm hale and hearty, but his lack of details surrounding the debacle of “date night” unnerves her and sets the motion for twists and turns galore! While trying to figure out who could have made an attempt at Malcolm’s life, Savvy’s friend, Aimee, goes missing. Ok, she leaves a note of a sudden interest in backpacking across Eastern Europe, but Savvy, being savvy, certainly doesn’t believe that. One break-in later, spy skills again, who would go backpacking without hiking boots? A clue it is! Aimee’s disappearance forces Malcolm and Savvy to work together, but they can’t seem to find a moment’s peace to enjoy a teen romance.

This is where it gets a little troubling. While involved in all things spy, this knowledge goes unspoken between Malcolm and Savvy. Who’s really the savvier? **I couldn’t resist!** Enter Savvy’s estranged mom who makes an appearance in the middle of Spy Games and plunges Savvy into an unknown world of would-be assassins. No fair. It’s always scandalous when Mom leaves the happy home. These two need to talk. Throw in an ancient society who believes in preserving the sanctity of life versus a counter group who means to do away with corruption altogether. I found myself questioning the order or purpose of those events, but you can see to their relevance for yourself. And why do shots keep ringing out whenever Malcolm joins Savvy in her searches? Could some of those bullets be meant for Savvy instead?

There is a lot to unravel, but the journey is fun and all questions are answered. With one exception: We’re cheated out of a HEA. Malcolm isn’t given enough time to woo Savvy in the midst of varied states of unrest. How can I label Malcolm swoon-worthy if I barely got a glimpse into his romantic side? More, please! Ms. Pauling thrills you with insight for her next book and if Malcolm’s final scene is any indication, I was left very hopeful for a reunion between these two!!! Put Mom and Savvy’s reunion on the backburner for now….

Born of Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon – a Review

Born of Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon – a Review

For me the sign of a great author is when they are able to draw the reader in and evoke emotions in you where you feel as if you’ve run through a gauntlet.  Sherrilyn Kenyon has done just that in Born of Silence, her newest edition to her League series.  My emotions were all over the place reading Darling’s story.  From sadness to joy, to horror and disbelief at what someone else can do to another being.  There were times I wanted to jump into the book and haul ass over all those people who harmed and abused Darling.  Yet at other times I found myself laughing out loud over the classic Kenyon humour that provided many bright spots amid a life of abuse, mocking and downright cruelty all aimed at Darling Cruel.

Speaking of which, I think it very ironic that Kenyon would give her hero the last name of Cruel.  Darling is anything but cruel, instead he’s the exact opposite.  Darling Cruel was born into one of the highest ranking Aristo families in the United Systems.  He was born to be his people’s Emperor and rule his family the way his father had hoped.  Instead, his father was brutally betrayed by the one person he thought would never do him harm, his brother Arturo.  After his father’s death at the hands of his Uncle, Darling and his family were under his Uncle’s so called care and protection.  Knowing Darling would one day take over as Emperor of the Caronese Empire his uncle did every thing in his power to stop this.  Raised among people who only wanted to abuse, torture, mock and cause harm to him, Darling some how endured and came out a better person because of it.   Throughout the book we see Darling’s fierce loyalty, love and protectiveness towards all those he cares about.  His love for his siblings, fellow friends/Sentella members and love of his life Zarya shines through in every scene.  If there were anyone I’d want in my corner it would be Darling. He loves with all his heart, and should anyone wrong you he’s there defending you and dishing out justice Kere style.  Just one world of advice, don’t tick him off or you may find yourself going ‘Boom’.

Even though Darling has endured a hellish life so far, he has always put the good of everyone else around him first.  That’s why he became one of the founding members of the Sentella.  This is a group of men who fight against all the injustices done by corrupt governments, and other groups of power.  This is where Darling’s alter ego Kere, which stands for the Caronese god of war was born.  It’s through this identity that Darling meets his soul mate Zarya Starska.  Zarya like Darling was born into an Aristo family until one day her father was branded a traitor and her family lost everything.  One guess who did this to her family, yup you guessed it Uncle Arturo.  Together with her father they formed the Resistance, to which she became leader of, who’s soul purpose was to take down the Cruel Empire.  Little did Zarya know that the man she only knew as Kere and love of her life was the heir to that empire.  When Darling needed her most, Zarya was unable to see past his birthright to the man she fell in love with as Kere.  Now believing her beloved Kere gone or worse dead, both Zarya and Darling embark on a journey that will either bring them closer together then they’ve ever been, or worse, killed by the empire and forces against them they’ve been battling against from the beginning.

Besides the romance between Darling and Zarya, which was well written and beautifully done, Kenyon weaves the bonds of sibling love and friendship into that relationship. I really enjoyed watching Darling’s friends and fellow Sentella members rally behind him and Zarya to ensure their happiness, safety and protection.  That’s one group I’d want on my side, and not against me.  Some of the best scenes for me were with Darling and his friends, especially Maris.  Maris and Darling have been friends since forever and never once did Darling look down on Maris for his choice of lifestyle.  Instead Darling helped Maris as best he could and always made sure to be there for him no matter what, and in turn Maris did the same for him.  If it wasn’t for their friendship and love for each other neither would have made it through their hellish lives.  I also enjoyed seeing Darling’s siblings come to terms with everything that had happened to their brother and why, and then rally behind him and the family he’s always needed with him.  No matter what happened to him, his siblings safety and well being always came first, even if it meant putting himself in the line of fire.  Now it was their turn to return the favour and they stepped up to the challenge not once disappointing their brother.  Friendship, family ties and love were three key elements that Kenyon had shining through the darker aspects of the book and I felt they did an excellent job of balancing all the emotions and action throughtout.

Being a fan of Kenyon and reading both her Dark Hunters and League series I’d say she definitely has the role of tortured hero down to a ‘t’.  After reading Acheron I didn’t think there could be another book to equal it, but Kenyon proved me wrong.  This book is definitely on equal grounds with Acheron as far as I’m concerned.  It had everything from cruelty, misery, abuse and torture, to love, joy, humour, friendship, loyalty, you name it, it was in there. I definitely recommend this book and the League series. I’m already chomping at the bit for the next installment and hope that many of the characters from Darling’s book will eventually have their stories told.

Winter Kiss by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Winter Kiss by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Winter Kiss is book 4 in Deborah Cooke’s Dragonfire Series.  We met Delaney back in book one, he was critically wounded, taken by the Slayers and thought dead by his fellow Pyr.  In Donovan’s book we learn that Delaney was held prisoner in Magnus’ Dark Academy and force-fed the Dragon’s Blood Elixir, placing a shadow upon his soul and being susceptible to Magnus’s commands.  Thanks to his brother’s firestorm Delaney began to heal, dispelling some of the darkness that Magnus embedded in him.  Now a couple of years later Delaney has exiled himself from his fellow Pyr, sold everything he owns and has taken on a suicide mission none of his fellow Pyr know of.  Delaney feels he needs to destroy the Elixir to save not only his fellow Pyr, but the planet as well.  There’s just one problem with Delaney’s plan, he winds up finding the one thing he never thought possible, his destined mate who brings about his firestorm.

Enter Ginger Sinclair, professional chef and city girl turned organic farm girl.  Ginger was orphaned at a young age when her parents were killed in a serious car accident.  She was raised by her Gran who also taught her everything she knows about farming.  Ginger has always believed in kismet, fate, love at first sight, etc, and has a knack for setting up the right people.  So when Delaney Shea walks into the very bar where Ginger is throwing an engagement party for her two best friends, she isn’t surprised by their instant connection.  Ginger realizes from the start that Delaney is a keeper and there’s something special about him, she believes fate is finally on her side.  Trusting her instincts she takes Delaney home with her and the two of them embark on a journey that neither would have thought possible.

Upon discovering his destined mate and firestorm Delaney sees this as his last honourable act towards his fellow Pyr and the earth.  He decides to satisfy his firestorm, creating another Pyr born child to aid in the Pyr vs Slayer war and continue on with his plan.  However, his firestorm and his fellow Pyr have other ideas.  Believing he’s satisfied his firestorm Delaney contacts Erik, asks him to look after Ginger and his son, then leaves Ginger’s farm house and heads towards Magnus and the Elixir.  During this battle with Magnus and attempt to destroy the Elixir Delaney realizes his firestorm is still burning, thus putting Ginger in harms way since not only will Pyr be drawn to his firestorm, but so too will the Slayers.   Realizing he can’t leave Ginger unprotected until the firestorm is sated Delaney knows he needs to protect his mate at all costs and adjusts his mission long enough to either sate his firestorm or wait for the next eclipse.

Ginger never knew dragon shifters existed in her world before, but is now pulled into the battle of Pyr vs Slayer thanks to the firestorm and being chosen as Delaney’s mate.   Learning about dragons and firestorms doesn’t turn Ginger away from Delaney, instead it only draws her closer to him as she learns about his ordeal and what he plans to do about it.   The only problem Ginger has with this scenario is being left behind, alone and with the responsibility of raising a Pyr born child.  Delaney tries to explain to her that there is no other choice for him, that what Magnus did to him will always be a part of him, and he sees it as a danger to not only his fellow Pyr but now to Ginger as well.  With the aid of the other Pyr members Ginger listens to all the facts and information they can find on the Elixir, and their theories of how to stop Magnus and his evil plan.  With her never give up attitude and belief in Delaney that he is the one she was meant to be with, Ginger finally convinces Delaney to try with all he’s got to come back to her.   When Delaney agrees to her terms and makes his promise to her, Ginger finally agrees to try one last time to satisfy the firestorm.  Having agreed to Ginger’s terms and promising her to try his best to return to her and give them a fighting chance is the firestorm finally sated.

Along their journey Delaney and Ginger have their share of ups and downs, but thanks to Delaney’s friends, his fellow Pyr, they are able to overcome these obstacles.  It’s through these obstacles that Cooke finally informs her readers what the Dragon’s Blood Elixir really is and how it came about.  We learn from Ginger’s captivity in Magnus’ lair about another Pyr named Cinnabar who worked in Magnus’ mercury mines years and years ago and what happened to him.  Magnus informs Ginger that Cinnabar became the source of the Elixir but his usefulness is slowing fading and a replacement dragon is needed. One guess who this dragon happens to be, that’s right our tortured hero Delaney.   Magnus was preparing Delaney to become Cinnabar’s replacement when he was being held prisoner in the Dark Academy.  Believing his plan is fool proof, he didn’t factor into his plan one very determined and fiery mate named Ginger Sinclair and kismet as she would say.   It’s through the firestorm and Ginger’s love for Delaney that she is able to dispel the darkness that Magnus embedded into him and give Delaney the extra boost in confidence he needs, thus bringing back his dare devil self, which gives him a renewed sense of life when he goes off to destroy the Elixir one last time.  With the help of Ginger, his fellow Pyr and Cinnabar, Delaney is successfully in his mission and is given a second chance at life, a life with his mate and child.

I absolutely loved this book.  I’m a sucker for the wounded soul character.  You know, the one who feels there’s nothing left to live for because of the injustices that have been done to them, only to find hope when they least expect it.  Delaney Shea is one of these characters, and I knew I’d be a goner where he was concerned going back to his brother Donovan’s book.  I wanted him to have his HEA and succeed in his quest to destroy the elixir.  I got everything I wanted and expected from Delaney’s story.  From the battles, to the suspense to the romance.  Speaking of battles, the final battle in the underground cavern is well written and had me on the edge of my seat.  To be honest the whole book had me hanging on every word wondering how it would end, would Delaney get his HEA or would Magnus finally succeed?  As I said at the end of my review for Kiss of Fury, I highly recommend not only this book, but the entire series.  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.  Happy reading.  😉

UNTIL I DIE (Revenant #2) YA by Amy Plum-a new release review

UNTIL I DIE (Revenant #2) by Amy Plum

UNTIL I DIE (Revenant #2) YA by Amy Plum

UNTIL I DIE is the second book and new release (May 2012) in the Young Adult Revenant series by Amy Plum. Revenants are immortal, re-animated humans who feel the need to continuously sacrifice themselves to save humans. As part of their immortality, the Revenants must enter a once-monthly hibernation where their spirit becomes Volant and they have the ability to separate mind from body, and communicate with other Revenants.

Forging ahead several months, Kate and Vincent’s relationship has grown into one of love and longing, but a new threat has surfaced and this threat comes from one of their own. And Vincent’s desire to please Kate will force the couple to look into different options so that they will be able to spend a lifetime together without the recurring pain and threat of death.

It is New Year’s Eve in Paris, and the celebration is both happy and sad knowing fellow Revenants Charles and Charlotte must leave the Paris family home. Charles unexpected spiral into depression (following the death of a child) and subsequent exposure to the numa (species of Revenant turned evil), places the remaining Revenants at risk for future attacks, and as his twin, Charlotte will accompany her brother where ever he chooses to go. But replacements have already been procured, as we are introduced to Violette and Arthur-two of the oldest Revenants in Europe. Although the couple is well respected and admired, there is something that does not bode well for either Kate or her sister Georgia.

Violette and Arthur’s association with each other is a concern for Kate. Although as close as any family, there appears to be a continuous struggle for power, and one that Violette appears to be winning. But when Arthur appears to reject Kate’s membership as one of their own, it is Violette’s new friendship with Kate that will force the family to look closer into the lives of those they trust most.

At this point the ‘bad guy’ scenario is obvious, but not to the characters in the storyline. As a reader it can be slightly frustrating watching the story develop knowing what will happen next, but like the first book DIE FOR ME, the story is fast paced and there is rarely a moment to breathe. Amy Plum’s ability to keep the story moving is wonderful, especially in a Young Adult storyline where many other authors tend to focus on the ‘whoa is me’ and angst of the teenage relationships. Kate and Vincent’s relationship is touching. Vincent believes he has waited 90 years to find the love of his life, his soul-mate and he believes that his love is Kate. Their connection is true, not imagined but the inevitable and required deaths (as a Revenant) by Vincent writes like an unfolding tragedy. Yet knowing the pain it causes Vincent to reject his own death, Kate continues to search for a way to help prevent Vincent’s need to sacrifice over and over. But the search will place everyone, including her family, at risk from attack.

The lives and loves of the Revenants are revealed as the story progresses. Charlotte’s love for a fellow house-mate is unrequited, and with the realization that he may have feelings for another, Charlotte is willing to step aside and let nature take its course. Jean-Baptiste and Gaspard’s connection surprises Kate, and the death of a spouse will affect Kate and Vincent as it will mirror their future together. Georgia, although no longer welcome at the Home due to her prior relationship with the numa, will develop feelings for one of the elders, and we hope to see what Amy has in mind for another possible human/Revenant love. And Violette-well let’s say-looks and actions can be deceiving-even among family and friends.

UNTIL I DIE is a wonderful addition to Amy Plum’s Revenant series. The book closes on a cliff-hanger that will keep you guessing as to the truth about what really happened. I am looking forward to the final instalment-IF I SHOULD DIE-May 2013.

Jamie Leigh Hansen-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Jamie Leigh Hansen-Interview with the Author

The Reading Cafe would like to introduce paranormal romance author Jamie Leigh Hansen.

“I love dramatic, heart-felt stories. I love mixing the magic and wonder of an anything-can-happen kind of world with the daily lives we all struggle with. It adds a sense of hope and adventure to whatever we’re dealing with, be it health, financial or personal problems. Taking a break from the everyday grind to think positively and see a possibility that something will good happen to you soon is what keeps people going even in times of great struggle.”

Website LinkJamie Leigh Hansen

TRC:  Hi Jamie.  Welcome to The Reading Café.We would like to thank you for responding to our request for an interview.  We are always happy to know about the authors we have read and what they
are doing.

Jamie:  Thank you for finding me on the web, Sandy. The Reading Cafe looks wonderful and there is so much to read and see here!  You’ve set up an incredible site.

TRC:  Thank you.  We would like to start with some biographical background.  Would you tell us something about yourself?

Jamie:  I am very fortunate in that I married my high school sweetheart and we will soon celebrate 18 years together. I believe in love, the good, the bad and the ugly and I hope to keep my novels realistic while showing the HEA can really happen.

TRC:  When did you start writing?  Have you always been interested in writing?

Jamie:  I’ve always had a fascination with reading and with books, but my love of writing didn’t develop until later in my teen years. Looking back at some of the assignments I wrote for class, and some of the stories I wrote on my own, I see I’ve always loved heart-touching, dramatic stories. One of the most memorable would be of a girl whose brother was in a coma as she comes face-to-face with the kid who put him there. Then there’s the photo journalist who disappears into a rainforest and is captured by cannibals. My imagination took me into some crazy places. LOL

TRC:  How involved in the writing process is your family?

Jamie: My husband and daughters read what I have written and support me through each step of the story.  My youngest daughter, however, will sit and analyze each detail of the story and characters. She definitely has a writer’s mind and a passion for my stories that keeps me encouraged even when I am convinced the entire story is falling apart.

TRC:  You are interested in the fund raising and research in  Ataxia.
Would you explain about Ataxia and how you became involved
with their cause?

Jamie: I have Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), which is a hereditary recessive neurological disease. Recessive means it stays hidden in the genes as long as there is a more dominant trait to take the forefront. But, as this one is passed down from both the mother and father, if a child gets a recessive Freidreich’s gene from each of them, then they have it. No one in my family had it or showed signs of it. But when my clumsiness became a bit excessive in my teen years, several trips to the doctor and lots of tests discovered I had this disease no one in my family had ever heard of.

What FA does is tangle up the DNA in my nerve cells, so they can’t produce Frataxin, a protein that breaks up iron in the mitochondria of nerve cells. The less Frataxin my body makes, the more the iron builds up and the less my nerves work. This results in a lack of coordination, fatigue, potentially fatal heart problems and a progressively downward spiral of abilities.

There is currently no cure and and no treatment for the Frataxin deficiency, although there is always vitamins, antioxidants and physical therapy to treat the symptoms.

There are, however, about 7 different drugs in Phase II and III clinical trials around the world. Several of these show quite a bit of promise in combating FA.

While reading on one of my ataxia email lists, I learned of a project BabelFAmily was doing to help raise funds for research into these and more drugs. The International Literary Project to Fight Against Friedreich’s Ataxia :

is a project with writers, translators and artists from around the world working on one novel that will be sold in multiple languages and formats. Our fiction novel is titled The Legacy and combines mystery, murder and love with the last 160 years of discoveries about Friedreich’s Ataxia.

We are all very excited and in love with this project. There is so much in it to feel passionate about. We are close to finishing the first draft of writing and translations into the main writer languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. As soon as edits are finished, we have translators lined up to add German, French, and many more languages.

We ask that anyone with an interest in supporting this project and cause LIKE the project’s page on Facebook. We have a logo made and will be passing it around to anyone who would like to make it a banner on their website. All free of charge, we just want to gather awareness of this cause. 🙂

Thank you, so much, Sandy for giving me a chance to speak about The International Literary Project to Fight Against Friedreich’s Ataxia.

TRC:  You are welcome.  Betrayed and Cursed are the first two book in your Nephilim series.  Would you please tell us something about the premise of this series?

Jamie: For those who’ve read this series already, thank you! It is not dead and I do plan more. 🙂

For those who haven’t, The Nephilim series begins with Betrayed. This is the story of Kalyss, a woman who has lived 9 lives, attempting to rescue her husband who is trapped as a statue. She has failed all 9 times, but this 10th life is different. She is different. Stronger, more capable, with a steel will that will not bend. She won’t fail this time, even if she doesn’t quite know what to do with her husband once she has him.

This story has all the drama, love and angst I could have ever wished to write when I was a teenager. I love this series.

The second novel is Cursed, the story of Elizabeth, the dream-weaver. She was raised in a family plagued by troubles, both ones they’ve created and those life has handed them. After a decade away, Elizabeth is drawn home to care for her dying mother and ten abandoned nieces and nephews in the crumbling home her family has kept, barely, for three generations. Elizabeth needs hope and the ability to believe in hope and love when it’s freely given to her in the form of a high school crush she’s never forgotten.

Elizabeth’s story is very special to me. I loved healing this home and this family. I loved meeting a woman who was strong enough to make it happen even when she didn’t believe herself to be.

And through both books, there is the story of two unlikely allies determined to help the special people who consider themselves just human and determined to beat the ultimate in evil.

TRC:  Are you going to continue to write any more storylines for the Nephilim

Jamie:   The Murder King’s Woman is about a human named Mary on a mission to save the vampire who saved her as a child. It is a short story, but when I was done, Mary let me know there were more adventures that needed to be told.

Do you have a release date?

THE MURDER KING’S WOMAN by Jamie Leigh Hansen-a review

THE MURDER KING’S WOMAN by Jamie Leigh Hansen

THE MURDER KING’S WOMAN by Jamie Leigh Hansen

THE MURDER KING’S WOMAN is the first short story in Jamie Leigh Hansen’s new Murder Tales series. First published in the anthology The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2, The Murder King’s Woman focuses on the rescue of Sebastian, a one of a kind vampire, who metes out justice to those who betray the vampire law.

Mary is a human. Rescued by Sebastian after her parents and siblings were murdered by rogue vampires, Mary has always known that one day Sebastian would be hers. But like all young woman, Mary wanted independence and a chance to experience the life of a college kid and make her way in the world of humans. But freedom came at a cost.

Sebastian was the law. His brand of justice was swift and without measure, and all vampires knew, that if anyone crossed the line, Sebastian was merciless. But raising a vulnerable human child in a world of vampires was risky. Knowing he would never be able to relinquish his protective nature, Sebastian put himself at risk, when he ordered his guards to protect Mary, while she was attending college. With his guards protecting his future mate, Sebastian found himself imprisoned and drained of his life saving fluids. It was going to take a miracle or the love of a woman, to free the Murder King from his bonds.

The Murder King’s Woman is a short story, basically one chapter in length. I was previously introduced to Jamie’s writing through her novel Betrayed and I was hoping that she would continue this particular Nepilim series of books and stories. But The Murder King’s Woman has caught my interest and I am looking forward to the next adventure in The Murder King’s Summons.

GUARDIAN’S GRACE by Jacqueline Rhoades-a new release review

GUARDIAN’S GRACE by Jacqueline Rhoades

GUARDIAN’S GRACE by Jacqueline Rhoades

Release Date: May 13, 2012

Grace has never felt that she belonged. Abandoned as a young child, trying to survive in the foster care system Grace had always known she was different. If it weren’t for the continuous ‘buzzing’ in her head, maybe she would have felt ‘normal’. And when she is able to see ‘things’ that no one else was seeing, was she losing her mind or could she truly see what others could not? But the attack on a friend at the hands of demons and a rescue by 2 god-like angels (with fangs?), leave Grace reeling with the knowledge, that perhaps there is more than meets the eyes.

Twins Dov and Col are descendants of Nephilium-not yet Guardians but on patrol for demons. But when one human female has the ability to ‘see’, they know they must bring her to The House and High Lord Liege Canaan will not be too pleased. But it is Canaan who is stunned by the presence of Grace and with that, the knowledge that she would soon be his.

The Guardians are of the Race, with superior strength and speed, descended from Gabriel who are on earth to protect the humans and guard the portal, ensuring the demons do not cross the barrier. When a Guardian dies and his heart still remains within his chest, he is changed into vampire, and must be destroyed before the blood rage consumes. But we soon meet Uncle Otto, and learn that not all vampires are evil, and once they learn to control their blood rages, even vampires can love.

But demons have crossed the portal and are now are on a feeding frenzy of human flesh. Hoping to gain control of the local drug and alcohol trade, the demons continue to gorge on the blood of their victims, while the Guardians fight to save one of their own. A ‘witch’ has come into her powers and through sacrifice and blood she has unleashed a demon upon the earth, that only the Guardians will be able to control.

There are many humorous passages involving Dov and Col. Like two highly charged puppies with a new found friend, the twins wreak havoc ensuring Grace feels accepted and loved at The House. Their mischievous antics keep the mood light, when anger and sorrow seem to engulf on occasion. Uncle Otto is a genuine flirt, who falls in love with Grace, but he has eyes for another from his past. Nico hides a past that is reflected with the scars both inside and out, but it is the relationship between Canaan and Grace that drives The House forward and into the future. As a Daughter of Man, Grace has the power to save where others have failed.

There are moments that will break your heart and the tears will flow. When a Guardian is chosen, his heart will blossom and when a mated-pair have bonded, a red rose will bloom. Guardian’s Grace is a wonderful novel for first-time author Jacqueline Rhoades. I look forward to her next storyline-Guardian’s Hope.
