DEVIL’S GATE by Thea Harrison

Devil’s Gate by Thea Harrison

Release Date: June 2012

When it comes to love between a medusa and a Vampyre, it’s every man, woman, and snake for themselves.

A Novella of the Elder Races

As a coroner, medusa Seremela Telemar has always felt more comfortable chatting over a dead body than over drinks. But when her wild niece, Vetta, runs off to Devil’s Gate, a lawless town that has sprung up overnight in a modern-day gold rush, she knows she has to extricate her before the rebellious girl gets into real trouble. Though she’s confident in her head snakes’ ability to defend her against attackers, Seremela is still a bit nervous about braving this modern-day Wild West by herself.

Vampyre Duncan Turner is not about to let his new co-worker go into that chaos alone. His Vampyric power and lawyer smarts make him the perfect ally, and the fact that he already had his eye on Seremela for more…personal reasons, doesn’t hurt matters. Any romantic thoughts pull up short, however, when they arrive at Devil’s Gate and learn Vetta is set to hang by morning.

In order to save Vetta and themselves, Seremela and Duncan are going to have to fight fire with force and magic with fangs. And pray they make it out of Devil’s Gate alive.

Kiss of Fury by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Kiss of Fury by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Kiss of Fury by Deborah Cooke is the second book in her Dragonfire series.  It follows the path of Donovan Shea, Irish born Pyr.  Donovan is the bad boy of the Pyr.  He likes to fly solo and fight the good fight.  He’s a lady’s man, but when it comes to his own firestorm he wants nothing to do with it.   Thanks to his parents and what happened a long time ago with him and a woman named Olivia, Donovan fights his firestorm every step of the way.  Donovan doesn’t want a child of his to go through what he did, he doesn’t want to be like his father Keir.  He thought himself in love once and was betrayed.  Now, thanks to Olivia Donovan has trust and commitment issues where women are concerned.  Donovan is determined to thwart the firestorm while he protects and helps his destined mate.  However, the firestorm has other plans for Donovan and Alex.

Alex  Madison is a genius when it comes to science.  She’s a scientist who’s been busy working on a project with her partner Mark that could change the world’s environmental problems.  Together they’ve invented the Green Machine, an automobile that runs on water.  Both Pyr and Slayers have found out about this and are trying to locate Alex for different reasons.  The Slayers want to destroy Alex and her invention, while the Pyr want to ensure she and her Green Machine survive.  It isn’t until the Slayers find Alex first and destroy her lab and kill her partner that she learns there are dragons out there disguised as humans.  At first she thinks she’s loosing it, but when Donovan is sent into rescue her and bring her into the safety and protection of the Pyr, she soon learns there’s a lot more going on then just someone wanting to destroy her invention.

In the world of the Pyr there is a long ago told prophecy about the Wizard and Warrior.  Together they can form an army and lead the Pyr to victory.  Erik learns early on that Alex is this Wizard and he knows in his heart that Donovan is the Pyr destined to be the Warrior.  If the union between Warrior and Wizard is to be successful both Alex and Donovan need to come to terms with what’s happened in their lives and satisfy the firestorm.  Only by surrendering to the firestorm and fulfilling the prophecy can the Pyr achieve victory in this round of the war of Pyr vs Slayer.

As Deborah Cook weaves her tale of dragon shifters, she does so in a way that draws the reader in.   Her stories have a little of everything.  Romance, battles, good vs evil, and humour,.   Her love of dragons shows through in her descriptions.  I find myself getting lost in each story and feeling as though I can reach out and touch the dragons.  The battle scenes are brilliant, they make me hold my breath and cheer for the good guys.  When Donovan is fighting Tyson inside of Alex’s brother’s cottage I felt like I was right there witnessing every slash of their talons and breath of dragon fire. Somehow between all the battles and the struggle between the Pyr and Slayers Deborah manages to weave a love story between the destined mates that has you cheering them on.  Donovan’s reluctance to open himself up to a life of love and commitment has you in his corner from the beginning, urging him on to do the right thing and fulfill his destiny.  Alex’s brilliance and determination to face her fears and do right by her mate in the end makes her the perfect mate for Donovan.   When Alex realizes that Donovan’s missing scale is due to his feelings for her and will make him vulnerable in the coming fight, she takes the step needed to repair Donovan’s trust in woman and open his eyes to the life he and Alex can have.  She offers Donovan her most prized possession, her grandmother’s brooch to repair the scale and make him whole again.

Deborah also continues to tell the story of the Slayers and how they are creating an army from dead Pyr who haven’t been exposed to all 4 elements.  They are creating this army in their Dark Academy, where we learn Donovan’s once thought cousin Delaney was being held.  Donovan learns through a dream sent by the Wyvern that Delaney is his brother, and he feels responsible for what happened to Delaney.   As Delaney is sent on a mission by Magnus to retrieve the Dragon’s Tooth from Donovan, he feels the heat of his brother’s firestorm and begins to fight his way back to the Pyr.  With the aid of his brother’s firestorm, and his selfless act to turn on the Slayers and save Donovan’s mate he casts off the spell and darkness that was planted in him.  In the final battle in the book Donovan finally answers the call of Warrior and together he and his Wizard mate help the Pyr to defeat the Slayers in this round.

I loved every minute of this book and have no problem recommending it to anyone. If you love dragons, good vs evil and romance then this book is a definite must read.  Actually all the books in this series are great and they just keep getting better and better.   I’ve always loved dragons in stories and mythology, but Deborah has put a whole new spin on them for me and has me once again ensnared by the wonder of dragons.

Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke – a Review

Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke is her first novel in her DragonFire series.  This series is about two types of Dragon shapeshifters, one called Pyr, who are guardians of the four elements..earth, wind, air and fire.  The Pyr are protectors for humanity against the evil Slayers, who plan the destruction of the human race and the Pyr’s.

This book is about Quinn, who is a Smith, and after hundreds of years living alone, distant form his fellow Pyr’s, he recognizes the firestorm is upon him.  This means that he must find his mate, in order to conceive a child together.  Quinn, must come to terms with his alienation from his fellow Pry’s, as his mate life is threatened by the Slayers, as they do not want a child to be born. We will learn later in the book, how Quinn as a child lost his family, and was mislead to trusting the wrong person.  This caused his distrust of the Pyr’s.

Sara Keegan is an accountant, which she tells constantly tells Quinn, when she meets him.  But she runs a bookstore that was bequeathed to her by her aunt. She actually meets Quinn, when he, in the form of a fire breathing dragon, saves her life, from an attacker when she leaves her bookstore.  Sara actually meets Quinn the next day, and she finds out pretty quick, that he is the Dragon who saved her.  The firestorm is strong between them, and Sara immediately feels the attraction  She learns from Quinn about the prophecy that says the “Smith and the Seer” will produce the Pyr’s only chance to save the earth.  That is why the Slayers want them both dead.  Sara is pretty cool, as she accepts so easily that Quinn and the pry men are Dragon shapeshifters.   She adapts well to each situation, and is also very brave.

Deborah Cooke has created an excellent series that will continue with the stories of the other Pyr men, who will need their lifemates.  The villains are the Slayers.  In this book, the main villain is Ambrose, who is the one who fooled Quinn early on…. the one Quinn thought was his friend, was in actuality the real enemy.  He was a Slayer, who wanted to turn Quinn as a child to be a Slayer, then decided to kill everyone Quinn cared about along the way.  Quinn does learn the truth from Sara, who has dreams of his life in the past, as she is indeed the seer.    This was an exciting and action filled ending, and a wonderful romance between Quinn and Sara.

We meet some really good characters in the other sexy Pry men, such as Eric Sorenson, the leader of the Pyr, and the other men, Donavan, Rafferty, Niall, just to name a few, as well as meeting the Wyvern Sophie.  All of them, I am sure will come to play in the future books of the Dragonfire series.  We will also have the Slayers who managed to escape at the end.  This is an excellent start to a new paranormal series, and we can look forward to more sexy dragon shapeshifters.

Behind the Author – an Interview with Erin Galloway

Behind the Author

We at The Reading Cafe thought it would be fun to find out what goes on behind the scenes to help an author publish their book. So “Behind the Author” was born. We plan to meet with those who work closely with the author, such as their publicist, agent, editor, assistant or the illustrator who helps with cover of the book. Today we start it all off with publicist extraordinaire...Erin Galloway.

Behind the Author – an Interview with Erin Galloway

TRC:  The Reading Café would like to welcome Erin Galloway, who is a publicist for Berkley/NAL, a division of Penguin Group (USA).   Erin is the publicist of some wonderful authors that many of us read.  Erin is here to give us a look at what is a publicist, and what goes on behind the scenes to promote the authors book.

TRC: Tell us a little about yourself, how you decided to get into the publishing field, and how you became a publicist.

Erin: I love books, so publishing seemed a natural fit for me.  I started out in editorial, but one of my supervisors persuaded me that my talents were best used in publicity and he was right!  I’m able to read the books I love and promote them for a living.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

TRC: Tell us what a publicist does in helping the author, as well as in publishing and selling the book.

Erin: My job is to get as much media attention for a book as possible, whether that’s print, radio, TV or online coverage.  My role is to ensure as many people as possible know about a book’s release.

TRC: What is a day in the life of Erin Galloway like?

Erin: One of the things I love about publicity is that no two days are the same.  I work in a fast-paced department with wonderful colleagues.  Some things that I regularly do are contact media members to pitch and promote books and set up blog tours, book tours and other events.

TRC:  Do you read your author’s book after it’s done, and if necessary, offer advice?

Erin: Yes, I read my authors’ books—one of the best parts of my job!  Any advice I have to offer is limited to publicity.  I leave the editing up to the very talented editors here at Penguin!

TRC: Tell us the scenario of when an author completes their book, and now it is in the publishing company’s hands.  What do you do with the author from that point, until the book is released?

Erin: I typically begin working with an author around five months in advance of the book’s publication.  I work to ensure that a book receives as much media coverage as possible, through reviews, interviews, articles, etc.  I also schedule book tours and author events.

TRC: Are there any books coming up in 2012 that you are excited about, and want to share?

Erin: There are so many wonderful books releasing this year.  Some of the books I’m excited about in the next couple of months are Nalini Singh’s Tangle of Need, Karen Rose’s No One Left to Tell, Christine Feehan’s Samurai Game, Maya Banks’ Echoes at Dawn, JoAnn Ross’ Moonshell Beach, Kay Hooper’s Haven, and debut author Juliana Gray’s A Lady Never Lies, which is the first in a fabulous new historical romance series.

TRC: What is your favorite Genre to read?

Erin: Romance!  I also love urban fantasy and romantic fantasy novels.

TRC: Do you have a favorite author you enjoy reading?

Erin: I have way too many favorite authors to list here.  I’m so fortunate that I work in publishing because I never run out of books to read.

TRC: What is your favorite Novel, and Character?

Erin: I simply can’t name just one.  I will say that I really love characters that I can return to over and over again.  That’s one of the reasons I love J.D. Robb’s In Death series as well as Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series.

TRC: How do you think the rise of eBooks will affect the publishing world?  As a publicist, you are still promoting the author, therefore it would seem that your job would remain similar.  Any thoughts?

Erin: I can’t predict what the future holds for book publishing in general, but I will say it’s an exciting time.  And regardless of whether readers prefer to read in print or digital format, books still need to be promoted in order for readers to take notice of them.  So while the role of publicists may change and evolve, I know there will still be plenty of work to do!

TRC: Is there anything else you would like to add and share with us?

Erin: I’d just like to thank all of the readers out there to who enjoy our authors work.  It’s such a pleasure to hear the responses from readers when they’ve found a book or series they love.

TRC: Thank you, Erin, for taking the time to talk to us.  This was fun, as it gives everyone a chance to see what is behind the author and meet them personally.

Erin: Thanks for having me!

Catching Up with Alyssa Day

Catching Up with Alyssa Day

The Reading Cafe is happy to have Alyssa Day with us today. Alyssa has taken time from her busy schedule to visit us and give us an update on what is happening with her, as we all are patiently awaiting her next Warriors of Poseidon novel, and what a wait it is…finally…finally Alaric and Quinn will be here in December with Heart of Atlantis. Let us talk to Alyssa now.

TRC: Hi Alyssa. Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Cafe, and to give us an update as to what you have in store for us in 2012.

Alyssa: Thank you for inviting me!! I’m delighted to be here.

TRC: Before we ask about your books, we know you just got back from living in Japan, but aside from all your unpacking, how does it feel to be back in America?

Alyssa: It’s really wonderful! Japan is a beautiful country, but we were there for the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown, and then subsequently evacuated from the country for a month, so it was a fairly stressful time. Not to mention two international moves in just over a year. We admire the strength and resilience of the Japanese people very much, but we’re really glad to be home.

TRC: Heart of Atlantis is scheduled to be released on December 4th and is one of the most anticipated books upcoming, as Alaric and Quinn have become such fan favorites. When you started this series, did you anticipate their popularity when you created their characters?

Alyssa: I knew from the reaction to the first book that something about Alaric and Quinn really touched a nerve with readers, and to be honest, it worried me a bit, because I knew before I began writing the series that Alaric’s book would be the 7th in a 7-book arc. (Which turned out to be the 10th, because two novellas and Daniel the Vampire’s book also intervened.) I didn’t want readers to hate me for drawing it out!!

TRC: Your next release is Alejandro’s Sorceress, which is an e-book special. Can you please tell us a little about the book?

Alyssa: Alejandro and Maria were characters in Justice’s book, ATLANTIS UNLEASHED. Alejandro stole every scene he was in, and I couldn’t leave his continuing story untold. It was very fun to write, but the mechanics of writing and publishing a book in a new venture (indie e-books) at the same time as moving home from Japan has been pretty stressful. I appreciate my readers’ patience, and I learned my lesson: I’ll never again announce an e-book release date before it’s actually happening! LOL. Here’s an EXCERPT.

TRC: You mention on your website that you plan on books for Denal and Jack. Do you plan on each of them having their own book? Will they be novellas or full books?

Alyssa: Denal will probably get a novella like Alejandro, but I’m not sure yet. I haven’t found his heroine. Jack, on the other hand, is going to get his VERY OWN SERIES!!! Yes, you’re one of the very first to hear this, but I’m going to build an urban fantasy series around Jack and his continuing adventures! The first book will be out sometime in 2013.

TRC: How far do you plan on going with Warriors of the Poseidon? Will you continue this series after Atlantis rises?

Alyssa: I never say never, but right now I am taking some time to write other things, like Jack’s series I mentioned above, and The League of the Black Swan, a new series coming in 2013 from Berkley. The League is a sort of paranormal secret police, who take on cases when supernatural trouble occurs. The first book centers around Luke, who is sometimes called the Dark Wizard of Bordertown, and who is the illegitimate son of Lucrezia Borgia! I also have a novella, Curse of the Black Swan, which will be in an anthology with Lora Leigh and two other authors (to be announced) sometime next year.

TRC: Who is your favorite male character in your books and why?

Alyssa: I love them all, and usually the hero and heroine of the book I’m working on at the time are my favorites, but I’ll admit Jack and Ven hold special places in my heart because of their great senses of humor.

TRC: Who is your favorite female character in your books and why?

Alyssa: I could never choose only one. It’s like saying “which of your kids do you like best?”  LOL.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Alyssa: Just thanks for having me, and thanks to all the wonderful readers out there who allow authors to have the jobs of our dreams. You rock!!

TRC: Thank you, Alyssa for giving us an update on what we can look forward to this year. We also are happy that you will be coming back to the Reading Café in December, so that we share the excitement of Heart of Atlantis. Can’t wait for Alaric and Quinn.

CITY OF LOST SOULS (Mortal Instruments #5 YA) by Cassandra Clare-a new release review

CITY OF LOST SOULS by Cassandra Clare

CITY OF LOST SOULS (Mortal Instruments #5 YA) by Cassandra Clare

CITY OF LOST SOULS is the latest release (May 2012) from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series. In their continuing war against the demons and Jonathan Morgenstern, Clary and the Shadowhunters must now face a new enemy that was once a respected member of their own. With Jace missing and presumably under the control of Sebastian (aka Jonathan), Clary’s decision to go against orders will once again risk the lives of everyone she knows and loves.

Several weeks after the disappearance of Jace and Sebastian, Clary is frustrated when the Clave no longer place priority on Jace’s recovery. When the Clave clear Clary of any wrongdoing or involvement in the missing duo’s whereabouts, Clary decides it is time to cash in on the Seelie Queen’s promise. Knowing that this is probably one of the biggest mistakes of her life, Clary is once again thrown into a world of misconceptions and double talk. But it is a stunned Clary who will find both Jace and Sebastian trolling the halls of the Institute looking for a secret to uncover an ancient power.

Luke and his pack of werewolves, as well as  Isabelle, Simon, Alex and Magnus will have their hands full protecting the Shadowhunters and the others from Sebastian’s cruel and evil adventures. But when a severely injured Luke lay dying from his wounds, it is Clary who will make the decision, to disobey the orders in search of the young man she once knew. With the help of Magnus Bane, Clary is propelled into an ever-changing dimension on the other side of the world.

Alec’s relationship with Magnus begins to unravel as his jealousy and mortality shriek their reality with every passing day. But making a deal with Camille who is less than trustworthy will cause Alec more pain than he ever thought possible. Almost losing Magnus to the thrust of a blade will pale in comparison to losing the one person who has loved him unconditionally.

Jordan’s return into Maia’s life will push the couple closer, but his connection with the Praetor alliance will put them at risk. And now that the wolves have been brought in to hunt a rogue vampire on the lose Jordan will lose a friend before everything is over.

Simon’s relationship with Isabelle is fraught with the usual teenage misgivings. Simon’s feelings for Clary overshadow his growing desire for Isabelle, and although neither is willing to admit to their mutual attraction, it is Simon who is afraid to make the first move when it concerns his relationship with Izzy. Meanwhile it is the loss of his mother’s love that will push Simon further away from his family, until his sister Rebecca demands to know what it is that has caused the insane reaction of his mother.

With the revelation of Sebastian’s true intentions, Clary knows she must risk her life to save Jace. But it is Simon who must face the wrath of the Angels in order to separate the connection between Jace and Sebastian. With only the Mark of Cain to offer as payment, Simon will learn what it is to be suddenly vulnerable in the war between good and evil. With the Angel Michael’s sword, Clary now knows that the one person she loves the most in the world, is the one person she must now find and destroy.

CITY OF LOST SOULS is a fast paced storyline that brings many closer together and tears some further apart. Betrayal by her brother is nothing knew, but to know he is truly evil will send Clary spiraling further into a world of hatred and revenge. A fragile love will be splintered, forcing a decision that will bring you to tears, but perhaps it is the actions of a 13year old girl who will give immortality a new name. And the love of a young woman for a Shadowhunter plagued by guilt and remorse will help break a blood connection so tight, that each other will feel the pain of a sword. City of Lost Souls is a wonderful addition to the Mortal Instrument series. Cassandra’s style of anxious love and angst filled heartache was tempered by the action of the storyline and the necessity of building a story. I am looking forward to the final book City of Heavenly Fire-where I am hoping everyone gets a HEA.
