GLIMMERS by Barbara Brooke-a review

GLIMMERS by Barbara Brooke-a review

GLIMMERS by Barbara Brooke

GLIMMERS is the first novel (March 2012 release) in a new series by Barbara Brooke. Written in the paranormal genre, GLIMMERS follows Paige as she struggles with her new found ability to read memories from the past.

Paige is married, the mother of 2 and living a normal life in the suburbs. Her weakness for consignment goods (ala 1980’s ankle boots) will find her locked into the memory of a young woman experiencing her first love and loss, and the heartbreak of knowing she wasn’t good enough. As the previous owner of the books, Delilah’s memories will take Paige through the summer of 1988, working at a resort lodge, where she meets William, the son of a DC politician and socialite mother. But by the time summer vacation is drawing to a close, Delilah knows that there will be no future with William and embarks on a heartbreaking series of events to ensure that William is no longer a part of her life.

Paige has no explanation for her sudden ability to experience the memories of someone else. And the most confusing side-effect, Paige is now able to cook like a gourmet chef!!!! Didn’t Delilah have hopes and dreams of one day opening a French style restaurant? Not realizing why or how this has occurred, she tries to proceed as usual but the vivid memories continue to haunt. When she finally confesses to her husband Elliot, he is concerned that perhaps his wife is ill, but her determination to prove that Delilah exists will take both she and Elliot on a surfing safari through the internet-but with no luck.

Hailey is Paige’s younger sister. About to marry Derek, Paige has agreed to help Hailey, including picking up her engagement ring from the jewelers. And yes, you guessed it, Paige is pulled in to her sister’s memories, but what Paige finds is nothing that she could have imagined. And it will take Paige and her mother, Elliot, Hailey and someone from Hailey’s memories to ensure that Hailey’s ‘happily ever after’ will take place with the right man.

Her continued ventures into the past has Paige anxious and worried. Elliot has considered both emotional stress and a possible brain tumor, but Paige is determined to prove that she has come into some ‘super powers’ as she has now named her ability. And her mother’s visit will bring everything into focus. With each travel back in time, her focus becomes clearer, her vision opens. And it is the memories attached to her great grandmother’s cameo earrings that will push Paige to help Hailey make the most important decision of her life. And like the memories from the past, real life will come full circle and Paige will finally have the chance to meet the woman who experienced her first love in the summer of 1988.

GLIMMERS is a wonderful story, written in first person POV, without foul language, graphic sex and violence, or confusing plotlines. The premise is interesting and thorough, not original in its’ concept, but well worth the read. I am looking forward to BEYOND GLIMMERS. I have no problem recommending this book. A great start for Barbara Brooke

Heather McCorkle-interview with the author

Heather McCorkle-Interview with the Author

Heather McCorkle-The Indelibles

The Reading Cafe has had the opportunity to read and review some of the Young Adult novels written by the members of the Indie website -THE INDELIBLES. Please welcome Heather McCorkle and her May 2012 release To Ride a Puca.

TRC:  Hi Heather and welcome to  The Reading Café.  We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us about yourself?

Heather:  I love all things fantasy and sci-fi, as you can probably tell by my novels. 🙂 I’m a huge supporter of other authors, both in my online communities and in buying as many books as my budget allows each month. Outside of writing I love all things~well outside! The outdoors is my favorite place to be.

TRC: What or who inspired you to publish your first novel?

Heather: Actually one of the editors of Simon Pulse did. I was agented at the time and my agent sent my novel to her. She loved it, thought it had the potential to be huge in fact, but had to pass because her list for paranormal novels was full. More followed from other houses with similar reasons for passing. I knew right then that my novel deserved the chance.

TRC:  Do you have a specific writing style?

Heather:  I do. Third person past tense is my style of choice, though I’m working on branching out.

TRC:  You are a member of the INDELIBLES website for Indie authors. How has your experience with the INDELIBLES helped with the publication of your novels?

Heather:  More than I could ever say. The Indelibles are fantastic ladies and the most generous resource one could ever hope to tap.

TRC:  What have been some of the challenges you have faced as an Indie author?

Heather: I ‘ve been through two agents (the last parting ways because of the failing/changing market) and my steps have faltered a bit here and there. I will not name names, but I will say, to others who are thinking of going indie, stay as FAR as you possibly can away from vanity publishers (those who charge for services). Trust me, you don’t need them and you’re better off without them.

TRC:  TO RIDE A PUCA is your latest release.  Will you please tell us about the premise of this storyline? (see review below)

Heather: Imagine if Braveheart and Brave (the new Disney movie) were meshed together and took place in Ireland instead of Scotland. Then you’d have To Ride A Puca. It’s a tale about a girl who is one of the last of the druids in ancient Ireland, trying to survive and hold onto her home.

TRC:  What were some of the research challenges involved with the premise of TO RIDE A PUCA e.g. Druid culture?

Heather:  It takes place around 1160 A.D. which isn’t a much recorded time in history. Plus, history is written by conquerors and therefore a lot about the ancient Irish has been expunged. There is a bit on druid culture though because they inhabited far more than Ireland.

TRC:  Did you learn anything from writing this particular storyline?

Heather:  To write from my heart. In doing so I discovered the most amazing and powerful kind of writing. I will never go back to writing any other way.

TRC:  Many authors bounce ideas between family, friends and other authors. Which do you bounce ideas off of?

Heather:  All of the above! I talk through my novels to my hubby, and my friends (many of which are authors). That’s how I get over writer’s block.

TRC:  On what are you currently working?

Heather:  I’m editing the last novel in the channeler series (first of which is The Secret Of Spruce Knoll, second of which is Channeler’s Choice) and I’m drafting a historical fantasy about the Irish indentured servants. But ssshhhh! No one knows about that yet. 😉

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Heather:  Only that if you read and enjoy To Ride A Puca please tell others or spread the word in any way you can. Word of mouth is the most powerful thing in the world. And I will be eternally grateful and send you boatloads of virtual chocolate. 😉

TO RIDE A PUCA (YA) by Heather McCorkle-a review

TO RIDE A PUCA  (YA) by Hether McCorkle-a review

To Ride A Puca by Heather McCorkle

To Ride a Puca (May 2012 release) by Heather McCorkle takes place in long ago Ireland and tells the coming of age story of Neala, a young Druid girl learning about her powers. Druids are being persecuted to near extinction and she and her family must hide their powers from their neighbors. Sheltered by her parents, Neala must discover her power and her connection to Ireland and decide if it is worth fighting for.

There is a distraction of being wooed by 3 attractive men to take the edge off of of the threat of death and battle. Neala doesn’t have a type, so there is a guy for everyone, and each guy really wants to win her heart! There is Bren, a fellow Druid, who teaches her about her amazing Warrior powers. Tyr the Dane, who is the country’s mortal enemy, but who will betray his own family for Neala. Last, there is Donal, an enigma to Neala and a friend of her deceased brother. He appears out of nowhere ready to defend Neala against all threats.

The layers of reinterpreted history, magic and an average relatable girl give the story originality. Plus, there is the legend of the Puca. A puca is a shapeshifter of Irish legend They are feared because they can destory people’s lives. The relationship between the girl and her horse is an important element in this YA story. As Neala chooses between following her friends or family, she learns the importance of facing the truth and not denying it. Will she be able to help save the Druids and her homeland? Whatever happens, you know it will be with her puca at her side!

This was an engaging story from start to finish. If you love reading about Irish folklore and legends, you will love To Ride A Puca. It is also a fast read, geared for the mature YA fan.

NO ONE TO TRUST (Red Stone Security 1) by Katie Reus-a review

No One To Trust (Red Stone Security 1) by Katie Reus- a review

NO ONE TO TRUST (Red Stone Security #1) by Katie Reus

NO ONE TO TRUST is the first installment (February 2012 release) in author Katie Reus’ Red Stone Security series. Written in the romantic suspense genre, Katie introduces Porter Caldwell, a former marine who is employed (along with his brother) in his father’s high tech security firm “Red Stone Security” and Elizabeth Martinez the firm’s computer expert. Once together as a couple, it had been several months since Elizabeth broke off their relationship, with no explanation to Porter. But now that Elizabeth was about to walk into a house full of trouble, Porter knew, that once Elizabeth was back in his life, he would make sure that she never left him again.

Benny was in trouble again. Elizabeth’s older brother owed money to one of the most powerfully connected men in Florida. With gang affiliation, drug addiction and gambling, Elizabeth knew her brother was in over his head. But when Benny called hoping Elizabeth would be able to bail him out one last time, Elizabeth knew that Orlando Salsa was not going to stop his control over Benny-Elizabeth was now part of the prize. Elizabeth could never say no to Benny. She owed him her life. When no one else in their family would help, Benny made sure that Elizabeth was protected. But keeping the family secret would force Benny into a life of drugs and destruction.

Porter hoped that Elizabeth would stop enabling Benny’s addictions. And tracking Elizabeth was the only way he knew to ensure her safety. But several attempts on her life and with her brother missing, Elizabeth was ready to admit she was in over her head. But Orlando Salsa refused to back down. And now that Benny has stolen something important from Orlando, both Elizabeth and Benny were at risk.

Red Stone Security was on alert. Unable to comprehend how Orlando and the local gang-bangers continued to locate Elizabeth, it was suddenly apparent when the high-tech security vehicles were targeted in different locations. Hoping to keep Elizabeth safe, Porter would never allow Elizabeth to confront Orlando on her own. Porter was in love with Elizabeth, even if she didn’t feel the same. And protecting the woman who called to his very soul, was the only thing that mattered.

The relationship between Elizabeth and Porter builds slowly throughout the story. Frustrating for the couple were the constant interruptions and deadly threats against their lives every time they tried to get together. Guilt played at Elizabeth’s conscious when she realized that she would not allow herself the happiness with Porter while her brother was still missing and in danger of losing his life.

A wonderful storyline of romance and suspense from the mind of Katie Reus.  Look for my review of Danger Next Door-Red Stone Security #2.

Tickle Your Fancy is one of our Themes. Since The Reading Cafe is a place we can all hang out, while we drink our coffee or sip our margaritas, the talk of everything books can lead to funny stuff when we are having fun. Since we have been enjoying this feature…It is time for another Marcie…..

Adventures in Las Vegas

So I’ve recently returned from my trip to Las Vegas. I’m happy to report the trip disaster fairy stayed home, but her friend the giggle fairy ventured along with us.  We had ourselves a good time and lots of laughs which began as soon as we landed.  First off we’re dead tired cause we’ve been up since 3:30 a.m. eastern time and it’s 10:30 a.m. pacific time, we’re jet lagged and just want our luggage and go to our hotel.  Standing in the cab line I see a cabbie outside her cab, singing along to the music she has playing.  Guess who’s cab I get, yup the singing cabbie and she’s a friendly one.  She starts talking to us about Vegas and then goes onto her life story.  My sister and I are trying our best not to burst into giggles.  She’s telling us about her new car, her Mother’s Day, even pulls out her card to show us, and anything else under the sun.  Cab rides are always entertaining.  It’s amazing what perfect strangers will talk to you about.

If anyone has ever been in Vegas then you know all about the kiosks/vendors in every single shopping area.  I don’t know what it was this time but I think we had some vendor magnet attached to us that we didn’t know about or else I would have turned it off. I swear every day we were harassed by at least one vendor in each different area.  If they weren’t trying to sell us a facial product, it was a hair product.  Now I realize it’s their job to try and make a sale, but really come on, how much B.S. do they have to shovel at us???  We got stuck with this one guy for almost an hour in his shop after he actually took us by the hand and walked us to his station.  He’s telling us all about this product that was featured on Dr. Oz.  I don’t watch him so I have no clue about the product, nor do I care.  He then proceeds to apply it to our faces even after we said no thanks.  He’s trying his hardest to make the sale and the whole time we’re rolling our eyes and laughing at the whole situation.  As if I’d spend $500 on eye cream, what’s in it liquid gold?????  All I could keep thinking about was the scene in Mama Mia where Christine Baranski’s character is hung over and they are trying to wake her up and her friend is yelling; ‘donkey testicles, get the donkey testicle cream’.  Really what do they put in that stuff that makes it cost that much, donkey testicles???

Another vendor was trying desperately to sell us a hair straightener. He even went so far as to sit my poor sister in his chair and proceed to take her hair down and start straightening it.  She’s telling him it’s okay he can stop now, does he listen, no, just keeps doing her hair, telling her about the product, how long are we in Vegas, if she comes back every day he’ll do her hair for free cause he likes her.  Oh puh-lease, gag me already.  He’s dripping in something and it’s called oil, cause he’s a slick one.  It got to the point where we felt we needed to ninja roll out of the way whenever we saw a vendor, or go purchase a pair of blinders, you know the kind they put on horses to keep their focus straight ahead.  It was just crazy.  I swear we attract them all, I really need to get my idiot magnet taken care of before my next adventure. (makes note to self about this)

Has anyone ever gone to spa for an exfoliation???  Well I can tell you there’s no need for spending that type of money.  Next time you want a full body exfoliation, just take a trip to the Grand Canyon on a windy day, and not just a breeze, I’m talking gale force winds.  The wind was so strong the day we went that you felt it pushing you as you walked, and if I were back home and it was winter, that wind would have shut my city down, we’d be in a blizzard with zero visibility.  If it were somewhere tropical it be classified a tropical storm. I’ve never experienced wind that crazy.  Thanks to Mother Nature I experienced nature’s version of a full body exfoliation and ate more sand and dirt then you could imagine.  Sand was everywhere, in my nose, my eyes, ears, hair, let me just say the shower was the first place I went when I got back to the hotel.  😉  At one point I was standing near an edge for a pic when a gust of wind came up and I couldn’t see a thing cause of my hair in my face, but I  went into the stop, drop and roll position for fear of being knocked over and pushed to close to the edge of the cliff.  It was just wild that day, the Canyon is a wonder to see, but do so on a non gale force wind day, you may enjoy it more.  😉  BTW, how many times does a person fall into the Canyon?  Just once.  That was one of the jokes our tour guide told us.

You know, the whole time we were in Vegas we discovered something important about clothing and woman.  Anyone can wear a bikini, short skirt or skin tight dress. I couldn’t believe some of the outfits and swim suits I was seeing.  I swear some were wearing dental floss and passing it off as a swim suit, and how the heck some were walking in those shoes I’ll never know.  My poor foot (the injured one) looked like a balloon every day thanks to the heat.  I was living on IBProfin and icing my foot every night, and these girls are walking on shoes with heals that looked like spikes, oy vey my foot hurts just thinking about it.   Vegas pools and the strip are a great place to kick back with a drink and people watch.  Boy did we get an eyeful on our trip, it’s always entertaining and brings on the giggles for us.  Aside from people watching, sightseeing, chatting it up with other tourists, and having a good time, we ate at some great places and saw some amazing shows.  For anyone thinking of heading to Vegas I highly recommend Le Rev at the Wynn.  I’m a fan of Cirque du Solei shows, but Le Rev blows them out of the water.  It was freaking amazing and one can really see Maks’(from DWTS) dance style come to life in the dance numbers.  He’s an incredible dancer and teacher and it showed through in Le Rev. In case anyone’s wondering, yes I’m a fan of Maksim Chmerkovskiy 😉  If you’re looking for fun drinks and amazing desserts then The Sugar Factory at the Paris is the place to go.  Your jaw will drop when you your dessert is delivered to your table, they are incredible.  One thing’s for sure, Vegas doesn’t skimp on the food servings cause they are huge and delicious and the drinks don’t disappoint either.  I’ve been to Vegas a few times now and I’m ready to go back again.  It’s a fun place to vacation and there’s always something new to do and see.  (walks off humming Katy Perry’s Waking Up in Vegas)

DESIRE THE NIGHT by Amanda Ashley-an excerpt

DESIRE THE NIGHT by Amanda Ashley -an excerpt

DESIRE THE NIGHT by Amanda Ashley will be released September 2012.

Amanda Ashley website

A VAMPIRE IN CHAINS
Held captive in a basement prison, wrapped in silver chains, the vampire Gideon is too weak to fight the monster who enslaves him. For years, she’s tapped his precious blood like a fountain of youth—sustaining him with human females she captures for his pleasure. But with the latest victim she brings him, he senses something intriguingly different. Something dangerous, yet oh so tempting.

Kay Alissano is no ordinary woman. Every full moon, she must answer the call of the wild—unleashing the wolf within. As daughter of the Shadow Pack’s Alpha, Kay is extremely powerful—and when she’s offered up to Gideon, she doesn’t surrender easily. In wolf form, she might be able unchain Gideon’s heart and set them both free—if only he can resist the urge to consume her, body and soul, before the next full moon…

PROLOGUE

Gideon Marquet stared into the darkness, his limbs aching from the weight of the heavy silver chains that shackled his ankles to the thick cement wall behind him; his body burning from the inside out, his veins shrinking, his skin tightening with the need for sustenance. So long since he had fed. So long since his thirst had been satisfied.

His eyes narrowed as a tall woman appeared entered the basement. Clad in a shimmering white robe trimmed in white fur, she looked like an angel when, in truth, she was anything but.

The hem of her velvet robe made a soft, swishing noise as she drew closer, then knelt outside the cell.

Gideon groaned inwardly as she picked up the slender, silver-bladed dagger that rested beside a golden jewel-encrusted goblet on a low table. His body tensed as she began to chant, her voice soft, almost hypnotic. He winced as she dragged the blade across his right thigh. Lifting the goblet, she held it under the wound to collect the dark red blood that leaked from the long, shallow gash. When the goblet was half-full, she made a similar cut in his left thigh, chanting all the while. When the cup was full, she left the basement.

She returned a short time later.

Gideon sat up a little straighter, his fangs extending as the cell door opened and a young blond girl clad in a wrinkled brown dress was pushed inside. She fell to the floor, crying out as she scraped her knees on the cold cement. His hands clenched as the warm, sweet coppery scent of blood filled his nostrils.

Blind with panic, the girl, who couldn’t have been more than nineteen or twenty, scrambled to her feet and ran to the iron-barred door.

“Please!” she cried, her hands fisting around the bars. “Let me out! Please, oh, please, let me out of here!”

But her frantic plea fell on deaf ears.

The girl sobbed hysterically as the woman turned and left the basement.
With her only hope gone, the girl darted to a far corner of the cell, her back pressed against the wall, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Tears flooded her cheeks as she murmured, “Please, don’t.”

But all he heard was the beating of her heart, the whisper-soft sound of the blood flowing through her veins.

“Please.” She fell to her knees, hands raised in supplication.

But that wouldn’t save her.

Nothing could save her now.

It was feeding time.
