INTENTIONAL STRANGER by J.J. Oxendine

INTENTIONAL STRANGER is a novella written in the suspense genre by J. J. Oxendine. Released May 2012, Intentional Stranger follows wife and mother Grace Trenton as she deals with the aftermath of a horrific car accident that left her in a coma for several weeks.

Preparing for her son’s 3rd birthday, Grace begins to reminisce and realizes that her marriage has been slowly falling apart for a number of years. With her husband becoming increasingly distant, the move to a new town has not alleviated any of the family’s troubles as she had hoped. But a near fatal car accident will find Grace coming to grips with a reality she never knew existed and one that could not possibly be the truth. Waking from the coma, Grace’s only concern is for her son Ben. But the news about Ben was devastating. Not only was he dead but he had died from cancer 4 months before. And to Grace’s shock she didn’t remember anything about his death.

As the months continue, Grace’s depression and unwillingness to accept the death of her son, Mark demands that Grace seek counseling and gives her the name of a therapist he has consulted. As a counselor, Claire Matthews tries to get Grace to accept the death of her child by explaining the circumstances, but to Grace- Ben’s death is too hard to accept. And Mark’s anger at Grace will eventually force the couple to separate and file for divorce. But to Grace’s amazement, she will find Claire and Mark together, and not for professional reasons.

Finding herself alone, Grace befriends Jo-a café owner who offers Grace a position. As the friendship develops, Grace and Jo exchange stories of broken hearts and broken marriages. But when an FBI agent confronts Grace about her ex-husband’s possible link to money laundering and murder, Grace’s friendship with Jo may risk the woman’s life. And when Agent Gatlin finally reveals the entire investigation to Grace, Grace will suddenly find herself with Agent Gatlin hiding away in a secret location fearing for her life.

At this point, Gatlin may be developing feelings for his foundling client. Oblivious to the man’s charm, Grace’s concern for her friend as well as her ex-husband’s arrest will find herself coming face to face with Mark and Claire. But a surprise phone-call from the new owners of Grace’s former house, will find Grace with a boxful of memories and the missing information the FBI needed to indict Mark for his crimes. And a phone-call from Claire about some family photos will once again put Grace’s life at risk and the risk the life of someone she loves.

INTENTIONAL STRANGER is a short story. A suspense story with a few twists, J. J. Oxendine must be commended for grabbing the reader’s attention from the very start. A great short story that will hold your interest to the very end.

A Vampire’s Salvation by Alexis Morgan-a review

A Vampire’s Salvation by Alexis Morgan

A VAMPIRE’S SALVATION by Alexis Morgan

A VAMPIRE’S SALVATION introduces Cord Kilpatrick- a vampire convicted 15 years ago of murdering his best friend and business partner. Although the body was never found, Cord has always professed his innocence, but now that the lead investigator chancellor Olivia McCabe has requested his presence, all bets are off. This can only mean one thing-his execution.

Chancellor Olivia McCabe has always known that Cord was innocent in the disappearance of his business partner, but the incriminating evidence was too strong. Ever vigilant, Olivia kept her eyes and ears open for any clue that would help free Cord from prison and the heavy labor he has had to endure for 15 years. With most murder convictions, the death sentence is carried out immediately, but without a body, Cord’s future has been hanging in the balance. And there are other clues pointing to someone close to Cord, who may be responsible.

Cord’s release from prison coincides with the discovery of his ‘recently’ deceased business partner. And it is now up to Olivia and Ambrose to find the real killer. But in the end, all Cord wants is his life back to normal with the woman he now wants to share his life. And what of his previous life and family? Someone from his past is no longer a part of his future, but has caused him enough damage that he may never recover.

A Vampire’s Salvation is another novella in Morgan’s Vampire Series. Like the other storylines, the pace is fast, the relationship has already been established and their story is over too quickly. I am a fan of the Vampire series, and I hope Alexis Morgan continues to write about the lives of the chancellors, vampires and humans that connect with each other –from her heart.

What’s At Stake & The Vampire’s Desire by Alexis Morgan-a review

What’s At Stake & The Vampire’s Desire by Alexis Morgan

WHAT’S AT STAKE by Alexis Morgan

WHAT’S AT STAKE is the first storyline in Alexis Morgan’s Vampire series, and can be found in the anthology The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance. Shorter than a novella, What’s At Stake is basically one chapter in length and introduces Chancellor Jocelyn Sloane and her future vampire mate Rafferty O’Day, who will figure prominently in future storylines and novels.

Rafferty O’Day stands accused of murdering a human. For reasons only he is aware, he suspects his less than happy ex-fiance Petra is behind the murder and the set-up. Trusting no one other than the one person closely connected to the events leading to the murder, Rafferty requests to see Chancellor Sloane.

Jocelyn Sloane is a Chancellor-a hybrid human/vampire mix, and the woman who has sparked a flame in Rafferty’s soul. But with her position as Arbitrator on the North American Coalition, she can longer sit in judgment without biasing the outcome of the hearing. Hoping to access a fair hearing for Rafferty, Joss (Jocelyn) calls in her mentor and boss Ambrose to hear the evidence and charges.

Rafferty and Joss’s relationship enters the inevitable next step-one that they had both been previously accused. Knowing that there is the possibility of a death sentence waiting for Rafferty, the couple explore the depths of which love may take them, if there is ever to be a future for them both.

When a rather irritated Petra is called in to testify, it only takes one look at Joss and Rafferty together, for her to lose everything that has ever mattered—including possibly her life. The punishment for murder is severe and Chancellor Ambrose is the final authority on all things-vampire.

What’s At Stake is a very short novella, taking only a few minutes to read. But I would suggest, if you consider reading Alexis Morgan’s Vampire Series-What’s At Stake is a necessary read-as Joss and Rafferty will play a major role in some of the upcoming storylines.

THE VAMPIRES’ DESIRE by Alexis Morgan

THE VAMPIRE’S DESIRE is the first book (but 2nd storyline) in Alexis Morgan’s Vampire series of novels. Set against the backdrop in the fictional town of New Eire, The Vampire’s Desire introduces a new breed to the vampire line-up of characters-Chancellor-vampire/human hybrid, with the power of a vampire but the ability to walk in the daylight.

Chancellor Ambrose O’Brien despises being stood up and by all people, the beautiful vampire Miranda “Randi” Connor. It wasn’t, in fact a date, but a meeting between the warring factions in a land-claims deal that was quickly spiraling out of control. And with Miranda’s wayward family members in attendance (Kurt and his wife Otka), the only thing that was under discussion was the wine and dessert list. Where was Miranda and why had she missed this important meeting?

Miranda Connor is a pure-bred vampire heiress who is capable of challenging the strongest of opponents sitting at any conference table, but a deadly attack in her home, has left her shaken and wondering who would want to kill her family. But when Chancellor Ambrose O’Brien suddenly appears at her front door, she knows her life is about to change. Calling in reinforcements, Ambrose is quick to call in his investigation team, and reign in his anger over the thought that Miranda could have been one of the victims. His attraction to the female vampire was growing and with that came the knowledge, that perhaps she was more than just a casual business acquaintance.

Hoping to secure Miranda in a safe place, Ambrose takes Miranda to his secluded apartment, but any thoughts of safety are soon wiped away, when his state of the art bachelor pad is suddenly rocked by explosions and engulfed in flames. On the run, the couple is soon caught in a game of tag, trying to elude a number of cars tailing their vehicle. But safety and security are fleeting, when Ambrose and Miranda are once again ambushed, while hiding out at friend’s former house.

Ambrose and Miranda’s relationship builds quickly as the storyline progresses. While temporarily secure in the friend’s home, the couple no longer yield to their sexual desires. When Ambrose offers his vein to the woman in his arms, he knows that she is the one for him; the one he will protect with his life.

Finding themselves tied and locked in a blackened basement, Ambrose and Miranda realize they are not alone. Kurt is also held captive, secured by his scheming wife and her lover-hoping to gain control over the Miranda’s family lands. With an escape plan in the works, the trio finds themselves face to face with their captors. But it is a quick thinking Ambrose, that knows, as one of the most powerful Chancellors, that he has the ability to enact punishment-deadly and swift.

The Vampire’s Desire is a short story introducing Alexis Morgan’s world of vampire series. There is just enough background information that the reader is not overwhelmed and with the mention of a few names, a foreshadowing of many novels to come. Although I have previously read a few of her novellas in other anthologies, I look forward to reading the entire series to date.

Victor Ross II-Interview with the model

Victor Ross II-Interview with the model

Last year, I was looking for pictures that would represent Father’s Day and I found a picture of a man, walking on the beach,  holding a young child’s hand.  That picture led me to Victor Ross II.

Today is Father’s Day and as a special treat, The Reading Cafe would like to welcome Victor Ross II-Model, Artist, Poet and Father.

Name: Victor Ross II
Year of Birth: 1985
Home State: Missouri
Residence: Los Angeles, Cal.
Marital Status: Single
Children: son-River
Siblings:Older brother Clint, younger brother Tristan

~~~~~~~
TRC: Hi Victor, and welcome to The Reading Café. Would you please tell us about your childhood growing up in Missouri?
Victor: It was rural town living. Just playing sports and goofing off with my brothers. I had a great child hood, parents spoiled us, especially with love.
TRC: Where your parents (family) supportive with the choices you made?
Victor: 110 billion percent.
TRC: How involved in sports and recreation were you as a child?
Victor: I was constantly involved, I was either playing basketball, baseball, soccer, running track, or playing football football. Outside of these I was camping and hiking in my grandpa’s woods.
TRC: Before you were scouted as a model, what had you planned to do with your life?
Victor: I wanted to play ball or thought I would run in the olympics one day, but also I always knew I was an artist. I always wanted to be a writer and paint. I always always had the idea to be in advertising.
TRC: You are a very creative individual in the visual arts including photography, as well as writing poetry. Do you currently have any art pieces on display in a gallery?
Victor: I have a painting that is displayed inside my modeling agency at LA Models. I have my painting up on www.vr2.biz and I am working on participating in a show soon.
TRC: Which medium do you prefer and why?
Victor: I don’t really have a specific medium. I go through phases where I would rather pick up the camera, then I’ll have weeks where I just paint, and then I’ll phase into writing poetry.
TRC: Have you ever published your poetry? Would you consider publishing a book of your own poetry, along with your art e.g. connecting the poetry with the photographs/artwork or as a stand-alone book?
Victor: I do, I have self published a collection of poems called A Voice In The Dark Looking For Home, Oiseau, Once just dreams poems, and also When we were the ocean. You can find them online at Victor Ross II Bookstore
TRC: Explain the significance of: ‘you cannot stop my thoughts with a dot, Period.’
Victor: It means that not everything is on the surface. Just because something is said, it doesn’t mean that it has to end right there and be still. That makes it just words. It can resinate, the real stuff is in the feelings behind our words, our emotions. Just because grammar says we have to place a period at the end of a thought or sentence doesn’t mean we stop thinking the thought and it’s over. I could say I love you. I’m still going to feel this emotion so the moment continues and is allowed to carry on. So hence I say you cannot stop my thoughts.
TRC: At one time you considered opening your own studio. Do you still have plans for your own studio, and if so, when do you see your dream coming to fruition?
Victor: I do still plan on opening a studio and creative space one day. I have no set date on this one yet. One sweet day.
TRC: You name several ‘musings’ including Theodor Suess Geisel and Shel Silverstein (personally I like the Runny Babbit series). Do you read to your son whenever you have the chance?
Victor: I sure do. We read all the time. One of his favorites is “Falling Up”
TRC: Have you ever considered writing a series of poetry for children?
Victor: I haven’t really thought about that. I have been in the works of writing a book of River’s quotes he has has said over the years and also a book with a story River helps me illustrate.
TRC: What is your favorite piece of poetry/prose?
Victor: At the moment it is A Tear And A Smile by Khalil Gibran
TRC: Would you like to share any poetry/prose with us today?
Victor: “Life is all about finding people to blame, for your smile.”
TRC: Where may we read some of your poetry or view some of your artwork?
Victor: My work can be found at Softly Written Poems
TRC: Your son has been photographed and can be seen in several of your photos. Has your son ever modeled professionally with you or as an individual?
Victor: He has done some work as a baby and we were actually just asked to maybe do a father son shoot for Hallmark.
TRC: You know that will illicit the ahhhhhs!!!
TRC: What is your opinion, with regards to young children in the modeling industry?
Victor: As long as parents aren’t forcing their kids to not be shy. I say sure as long as they are comfortable with it. I have left plenty of castings because my son would have rather went and played. Just don’t force it. Now that he is in school I limit the projects.
TRC: Please tell us about how you were discovered and entered the modeling industry.
Victor: I heard about a model search going on in the city when I was 15 and was scouted there.
TRC: What and where was your first gig as a model?
Victor: It would have been in a runway show in Overland Park Kansas at the mall.
TRC: What would you consider the best and the worst aspects of the modeling industry?
Victor: Best: Free Time, Worst: Not Working
TRC: Nude photography is a controversial topic for many models in the industry. What is your opinion about nude photography?
Victor: It’s your choice. Either you want to or not and you can let your agency know that you don’t want to be optioned for those jobs.
TRC: What would you say or recommend to young models entering the modeling industry about nude photography?
Victor: I say you have a young beautiful body once, why not have it photographed. If your comfortable with it, sure do it. If your not, don’t. Just make sure it’s a professional setting and make it beautiful and art.
TRC: Would you please tell us about your favorite shoot?
Victor: They all have there moments. I have fun with little editorial shoots as well as big campaigns.
TRC: You have worked and modeled for video shoots, ad campaigns including Motorola, and print medium. Which do you prefer and why?
Victor: I like video shoots and commercials and making video’s with buddies. It’s just more fun to be able to have movement and be more expressive.
TRC: What are you currently doing?
Victor: I am currently working on an one act play, but I think it is leading me into a book. Also at the moment working on two poems and greeting cards for a company I just signed with.
TRC: Would you like to add anything else?
Victor: I would like to thank you for this opportunity to share some of me with you and your subscribers. Write from your art, right from your heart.
The Hunter and the Hunted (anthology) by Kelley Armstrong-a new release review
The Hunter and the Hunted (anthology) by Kelley Armstrong
THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED (Women of the Otherworld) Anthology by Kelley Armstrong-release date June 12, 2012
STALKED
STALKED is the first short story in Kelley Armstrong’s anthology THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED. Originally released in the anthology My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon, written from Clay’s perspective STALKED follows Clay and Elena on their honeymoon in St. Louis.
Clay was hoping that their honeymoon was perfect, but only a couple of days into their vacation, Elena is bored. Not that she told him, but he sensed. Being werewolves, sightseeing wasn’t their usual form of entertainment, but the scent of a mutt (werewolf without a pack) spurred Clay into action. Hoping that Elena did not catch the scent, Clay tracked down the mutt and as usual, the mutt was willing to risk everything for a chance at the only female werewolf in existence. Threatening Clay’s mate would mean death to any wolf.
Fans of Kelley Armstrong will recognize the Cain name from previous storylines. The mutt hunting Elena was the son of Theo Cain and the young Cain was not willing to give up. But to Clay’s surprise it was Elena that eventually responded to Cain’s stalking. Elena was not willing to wait around for an attack. She was going to make sure the mutt never returned. With her usual flair, Kelley takes the reader on a hunt to track down a mutt only to find that there are three wolves willing to risk all for a chance at Elena.
STALKED is a quick read, basically a chapter in length. I had previously read Stalked in My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon, but Kelley is re-releasing many of her short stories and novellas for her WOTO fans. With the final book THIRTEEN to be released in July 2012, fans of WOTO will get periodic glimpses into the lives of the many characters throughout the series when Kelley re-releases her stories. Stalked is a welcome addition to the series, and fills in some of the missing timeline between BROKEN and FROSTBITTEN.
OFF-DUTY ANGEL
OFF-DUTY ANGEL is another short story that focuses on Eve Levine-part demon/part witch/sometime ghost/sometime angel-mother of Savannah and the late Nast Cabal heir Kristof Nast’s otherworldly lover. Wow, she has quite the repertoire. Oh and did I forget to mention-The Sword of Judgment. Eve holds life and death in her hands. Living or existing on another plane of existence, Kristof and Eve track down and prosecute the supernatural who have riled the Fates in the afterlife.
Lord Demon Balaam is Eve’s father and through parenting he has gifted Eve with a special ability and combining with her talents as a witch, Eve is called upon when someone needs to be followed. Shaman Lewis Stranz was her current assignment. Under Kristof’s directives Eve follows Lewis to London and the British museum, where she is not surprised to realize that he is probably a pawn in a much larger game. And meeting up with a demi-demon (an Erynis) now put Lewis on the radar because Erynis were known as the goddesses of vengeance.
But along the way, Eve crosses a barrier shift and soon finds herself the object of fear to a group of small demon-like creatures. Thinking she is working for her father, the Oni are under the assumption she has come for the one treasure they do not want to part (with).
Trsiel is a full-blooded angel with a voice that compels the truth. Partnered in the after-life together, Eve calls upon Trsiel to help better understand the treasure that the Oni refuses to give up. But Eve soon realizes that Kristoff has involved Eve in a game that has suddenly taken a serious turn. They had crossed a portal into Hell and retrieving the ‘treasure’ would take a miracle that even Trsiel wasn’t able to manage.
OFF-DUTY ANGEL reunites Eve with Trsiel as she aims to conquer her boredom while Kristof attends to his otherworldly legal duties. Written from Eve’s POV, Off- Duty Angel is another wonderful storyline in the WOTO series of novels and shortstories and imparts some more missing information that will eventually lead to Kelley’s final full length novel-THIRTEEN.
THIRTEEN (preview)
THIRTEEN is the last full-length novel (July 2012 release) in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. The Hunter and the Hunted offers a preview of what is in store for the final entry in a wonderful series from Savannah’s continued POV.
THIRTEEN continues where SPELLBOUND ended. Following the lab explosion that nearly ended Savannah, Adam and Jeremy’s lives, The Supernatural Liberation Movement continues their threat to reveal the existence of ‘otherworldly’ beings, but now someone with vengeance in their plans is calling upon the demons and angels. But when Savannah and Eve find themselves in police custody surrounded by other supernatural beings, they soon realize that their very existence hangs on their ability to call forth an ‘angel’ that only Jaime can see. And the angel is someone Savannah hasn’t seen in 9 years.
Kelley has said that many of her WOTO characters will reunite in THIRTEEN and within the first five chapters, one of the recently departed has returned. I am looking forward to reading THIRTEEN-here’s hoping everyone gets their HEA and Savannah and her family will be reunited for one glorious celebration at the end.
SUSAN SQUIRES-Interview with the Author
SUSAN SQUIRES-Interview with the Author
New York Times bestselling author: Susan Squires has released the first novel in her new CHILDREN OF MERLIN SERIES-Do You Believe In Magic?
TRC: Hi Susan and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some personal information. Please tell us something about yourself.
Susan: That’s a tall order! Well, I’m a Californian, born and bred. I lived most of my childhood in small towns in Northern California. I met my husband at UCLA when he was a screenwriting major and I was an English major. We’ve been married a long, wonderful time. I used to ride horses, but my exquisite horse, Finny (Finlandia) passed away unexpectedly, and I have had a few too many trips to the ER, so I have not gotten another. We have three Belgian sheepdogs. I train Violet in obedience and rally, and Belle (our rescue) in agility. Blitz is Daddy’s boy entirely. I love to knit. I worked as an executive for a Fortune 500 company until last year, when I got to quit my day-job. My fellow executives thought it was amusing that I wrote books (ones that had sex scenes! Oh, my!) I’m lucky enough to live at the beach in Southern California. We’re remodeling our house, which is driving us both crazy, but will be over soon.
TRC: You have had a very successful career as an author. What inspired you to write your first romance novel?
Susan: Believe it or not, my husband, Harry, introduced me to romance. He read me Georgette Heyer’s THESE OLD SHADES. I thought it was a nearly perfect book (except it didn’t have enough sex in it.) I also read a lot of sci-fi, mysteries, and historical novels. I had always wanted to write. I was reading a book one day with an interesting premise, but I didn’t think the author delivered on the idea. I said to myself, “I may not be Jane Austen, but I can do better than that!” And I started to write my first novel, which (much later) turned into SACRAMENT, a vampire novel set in the Regency that owes much to Georgette.
TRC: Has there been anything particularly challenging in your writing career that you would like to share?
Susan: I would say two things. Working at least 55 hours a week on a day job while meeting contract deadlines for 12 years was a challenge. I got so I was able to write in the middle seat of an airplane. No waiting for the muse to arrive, you had to snap your fingers and expect her to appear. The second challenge was persevering in learning how to write well. I was a fairly horrible writer when I started out. But I joined a critique group lead by a pro, and took classes at UCLA, and just kept at it. I still try to keep improving my craft.
TRC: Your husband is the author Harry Squires aka H R Knight. Have you ever considered co-authoring a series of books together?
Susan: We’ve kicked around several ideas. Let’s see–there’s the one about a detective man and wife (a sort of modern Nick and Nora Charles) who solve mysteries at famous luxury hotels. So of course we’d have to go stay at luxury hotels everywhere and write it off. J And there was the reincarnation romance. We almost did that one. But we always end up chickening out. We have different work styles as well as prose styles. Writing together would either be wonderful, or endanger a very happy thirty-five year marriage.
TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information between each other and family Do you and your husband share ideas?
Susan: Definitely, yes. He helped me out of a corner just two days ago. He’s a wonderful writer with a fabulous sense of story. And I’ve helped him as well. It’s great to have a significant other who knows what you’re going through. We read each other’s first drafts and make suggestions. The rule is: you have to say something nice first. Then you can be brutally honest. It took a while to come to the point where we can do that without egos getting the way. As far as sharing ideas, we do–up to a point. He came up with a wonderful phrase the other day while we were at the farmer’s market. We both looked at each other and he said, “Don’t you dare. That one’s mine.”
TRC: Many artists (including authors) are perfectionists and sometimes have difficulties making deadlines. With two authors in the same household, how do you handle the anxiety levels during ‘crunch-times’ for deadlines etc?
Susan: Oh, you don’t want to be around the Squires household when we’re both having the same problem at the same time–whether that’s deadline crunch or writer’s block. The difference is that with writer’s block, the house is VERY clean. When we’re both working as hard as we can…not so much.
TRC: The Children of Merlin is your new fantasy romance series. Please tell us the premise behind the idea for the series?
Susan: In THE MISTS OF TIME, my last DaVinci Time Travel novel from St. Martin’s Press, the heroine went back in time to Camelot. Merlin was a character in it. I found I was thinking about him a lot, wondering what the rest of his life would have been like. I decided he would have wanted to have progeny who were more powerful even than he was. So I made up a history for him. He did have children, but the magic dispersed and was lost. The magic gene embedded in his DNA was passed down, however, through the ages. Now the magic itself is bent on strengthening. When one who has the gene meets their destined true love, it’s because they share that ancient DNA. The urge to mate is strong. The magic becomes active and they gain a power–some small portion of what Merlin had. And they will pass it to their children. The magic will grow strong in men again, and change the world, for better or for worse.
The Children of Merlin series is about the Tremaine family. They live in modern day Los Angeles and have the magic gene. Brina and Brian Tremaine, the parents, found true love and their magic before the start of the series proper. Now they have hopes that their children will follow in their footsteps. But there are those who got their magic gene from Morgan Le Fay, and they have their own plans. They’re the adversaries of the Tremaines throughout the books.
TRC: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC is the first novel in The Children of Merlin series. Please tell us something about the premise?
Susan: Tristram Tremaine has never fit in with his large and successful family. He certainly doesn’t believe in true love, or that he will share in some magical purpose. After disappointing his parents one too many times, Tris, the bad-boy brother, leaves his life in LA and hits the road on his cycle, drifting away from his destiny. That is, until he meets Maggie O’Brian, a spitfire rodeo rider with a strange ability to calm wild horses. Maggie lives on the road too, avoiding relationships. Her mother left her, the boy she loved left her–even her dog left her. Her secret desire for enduring love and a family seems far away. The last thing she needs in her life is a tomcat with “love ‘em and leave ‘em” written all over him. But the connection between Tris and Maggie is instantaneous. After a mysterious accident nearly kills Tris, he and Maggie must learn to believe both in their destiny and each other to stay one step ahead of those who will do anything to prevent them from claiming their future.
TRC:The Tremaine family is the focus of the new series, and you have introduced a number of Tremaine siblings as well as extended family members. Do you have plans for each sibling’s storyline? How many books do you have planned for this series?
Susan: There will be six books, I think. Each one will follow one of the Tremaine children. I have a synopsis finished for each book. That doesn’t mean the story won’t change, but I know where I’m going generally. It’s really a challenge to show how each Tremaine grows and changes over the arc of the books, which will cover a time frame of about ten years.
TRC: Brina and Brian Tremaine are the head of the family unit. Have you considered a pre-quel to the series to explain how they met and acquired their powers?
Susan: Oh, you clever woman! I’m just about finished with book two in the series, and I thought I’d pause and write a novella with Brian and Brina’s story. That scares me a little. They would have met in the early eighties. I wonder if readers will connect with a story set in the recent past.
TRC: I (Sandy) love prequels. There are alway established characters in any series, where there is limited information, so prequels help alleviate the curiosity factor as well as filling in the blanks. 😉
TRC: HE’S A MAGIC MAN is Drew’s story. Please tell us about the premise for this storyline?
Susan: Drew is the oldest girl. She is very sure of her future. She knows she’ll find true love and her power, it’s just a matter of when. Lightning strikes when she glimpses a gorgeous man on television and gets a vision of the future. Her power has arrived and she’s off to the Florida Keys in search of the man who she’s sure is her destiny. Dowser can find things, anywhere, anytime. But he only uses his gift to find sunken treasure for rich dilettantes when he needs money to stay drunk, trying to numb his pain. When Drew finds Dowser, she’s shocked. This derelict can’t be her destiny. Still, they’re attracted to each other. But fate has played a cruel trick on them both. Dowser is still in love with his dead wife, Alice. Now a shadowy group wants Dowser to find a Talisman handed down from Merlin which will intensify their power, and in return they will give back to Dowser the one thing he wants: Alice. Both Drew and Dowser will have to make choices, and they look like they’re going to be painful.
TRC: The Tremaine family is gifted musically as well as magically. Do the titles of the novels have any significance to the storylines or what was the deciding factor in naming the novels?
Susan: Lanyon is the brother who’s the musician. He’ll get his story in book five. While the titles aren’t directly related to him, I chose song titles for all but the last book because they’re evocative and easy to remember. Each title does relate to the content of the books. For instance, DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? is about the brother who doesn’t believe, and HE’S A MAGIC MAN is about the sister who doubts that the man who raised her power has magic of his own.
TRC: Which character do you feel will be the most difficult to write and why?
Susan: I may not know until I get farther into the books, but I suspect it may be the villainess. I want to make her pure evil, but also understandable. That’s hard. Then there’s Tammy, the youngest daughter. She goes through a lot during the course of the books, and we see her grow up. Hers is the last story, and that may be hard as well.
TRC: On what are you currently working?
Susan: I’m almost finished with the first draft of HE’S A MAGIC MAN and looking forward to re-writes. I always revise a lot. Then it will be off to do Brian and Brina’s backstory novella. Novellas are hard! They have to be short, and yet complete and deeply felt. Not easy. But I think I’ll be well on my way into the third book in the series by the fall.
TRC: Would you like to add anything else?
Susan: Only that I’m really enjoying writing these books. I’ve always wanted to write a big, loving family who make mistakes and have misunderstandings, and yet are always there for each other.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC by Susan Squires- a review
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC by Susan Squires
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC (The Children of Merlin #1) by Susan Squires
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC is the first novel and April 2012 new release in Susan Squires The Children of Merlin paranormal series.
Maggie O’Brian earned her living taming wild horses and riding the rodeo circuit. And rescuing and training the wild beasts was only part of her plans for the future. Helping emotionally and physically handicapped children with the aid of the horses was a passion that drove Maggie every day. But meeting a handsome stranger at a roadside diner, would place Maggie in a position of life and death. And the burden of a working a farm and paying the bills only added to the shame and secrets she had hidden at home.
Tris Tremaine was on the run. Not from the law but from the family upon whom he brought embarassment and disrespect. Staying clear of his family forced Tris to give up his lucrative business restoring classic vehicles for the rich and famous. But without the respect of his family, Tris no longer wanted to see their pity or shame for the things he had done in his past. And knowing that he rejected his parent’s belief in magic only further separated Tris from the family he no longer felt he belonged. But meeting Maggie O’Brian pulled at something more powerful than he was willing to admit. And when he found himself injured and bleeding following a mysterious motor vehicle accident, it was Maggie who was willing to risk her life the the stranger who warmed her heart.
Something about the accident wasn’t right, but neither Tris nor Maggie was able to explain the circumstances as to how the accident occurred. And arriving home to his sympathetic family, brought a feeling of overwhelming sadness to Maggie when she realized that she truly did not belong. From a life of virtual poverty, Maggie was unable to grasp the rejection felt by Tris, when his family appeared to welcome them both with open arms. But looks can be deceiving when a family member learns the secrets that Maggie wished had stayed hidden.
Brina and Brian Tremaine believed in Magic. Descendants of Merlin would one day come into their magical powers when they met their true mates. But unlike his parents and his siblings, Tris did not believe in magic or anything powerful enough to draw two people together through DNA and love. With the knowledge his mother and father hoped that one day each of their children would come into their powers, Tris remained oblivious to the new found powers emanating from the woman with whom he had fallen in love. But the cost of rejection would be high when both Tris and Maggie refused to acknowledge their love, and leaving Tris would place Maggie in more danger than from just a broken heart. There were others looking for the descendants of one of the most powerful wizards and Tris was about to lead them directly to Maggie’s door. But it is their combined powers of magic and love that will bring them together when Tris finally realizes that woman he has pushed away, is the woman he was about to lose in more ways than one.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC is a romantic story of love and heartache, rejection and acceptance, magic and power. An interesting concept relating magic and power to the descendants of Merlin brings a fresh new perspective into the genre of the paranormal romantic storyline. With the introduction of 7 siblings and an assortment of other powerful enemies, the potential for several storylines has been written on the pages of this introductory novel. Another wonderful series from Susan Squires.
