BIG GAME (The V V Inn Book 3) by C.J. Ellisson

NOTE: Series contains mature adult content

BIG GAME is the third book in C.J. Ellisson’s vampire series of novels featuring Vivian Alexandria-a powerful sexy ancient vampire with the ability to manipulate reality and the world around her including fulfilling sexual desires and fantasies all with her powers of ‘suggestion’. But her power has been concealed from those who wish to destroy everything that she is-but someone in the Tribunal knows. The novel is written from varying point of views, but each chapter focuses on what is happening at various points in the story. From Alaska, to Argentina to Buenos Aries, there are three storylines all culminating in the final chapter.

Vivian (Dria) and her husband Rafe are heading to Argentina, to the gathering of the Tribunal in the Seat of the Darkness on a mission to determine who is trying to uncover Dria’s secrets. Members of her seethe are along for the trip, but will stay behind and be called in only when things become too dangerous. As members of her seethe, their allegiances and oath to protect Dria and her mate are their top priority. Left behind to their own defenses, it will soon become apparent that the human family that has been credited with keeping up with the property is no longer in control of their own minds.

Meanwhile Jon and Asa must remain behind in Alaska. A very large contingent of werewolves are heading to the V.V inn for Big Game hunting on the frozen tundra and the packs must be protected and ensured that all is safe. But Jon is not pleased that he must remain behind, when he knows that his position is to be with Dria. Although he is not her mate, he loves her with the desire to be, but unbeknownst to him, Dria has other plans with the arrival of the wolf packs and their numerous single females. No longer a member of the pack, Jon focuses on keeping his thoughts about Dria secluded away. But Big Game hunting has become an even bigger risk, when several of the werewolves are hunted and shot with silver. And when one of the mates succumbs to their wounds, the V.V Inn is suddenly secured down with military precision. Someone is determined to take out as many wolves, and whoever it is, has followed the pack to Alaska. When the identity of the hunter’s is finally revealed, it is a saddened Romeo who realizes that the love of a family, goes deeper when murder is suspected-especially by a werewolf thought to have gone rogue.

Vivian and Rafe soon find themselves in enemy territory. But after a passionate night of lovemaking Dria suddenly finds herself shrouded in silver and her mate dying from blood loss on the bedroom floor. If will be only a matter of time before Dria realizes that her life will be worth nothing without her husband and mate. And with the knowledge that an ancient enemy has procured the aid of another supernatural power, Dria’s only concern is that she will meet her mate in the afterlife. Torturing Dria for the secrets to her power, has only convinced the ancient vampire, that the pain and suffering will soon end in death. Giving up will mean she will find her mate in the afterlife that much sooner.

BIG GAME is fantastic storyline in the V.V Inn series by C.J.Ellisson. The infusion of vampires, werewolves and magic is nothing new, but C.J.’s ability to weave the characters in to an exciting story will leave you breathless and wanting more. And the love of a man for his mate, will bring a tear to your eye when one wolf loses his mate and an ancient vampire is rescued by a force so powerful, even the seethe members were amazed.

THE HUNT (The V.V.Inn #2) by C.J.Ellisson

THE HUNT (The V.V.Inn #2) by C.J. Ellisson

THE HUNT (Vampire Vacation #2) by C.J.Ellisson

NOTE: Series contains mature adult content

THE HUNT is the second novel in C.J.Ellisson’s Vampire Vacation series featuring the sexy ancient vampire Alexandria “Vivian” and her family of vampires and werewolves. The Hunt begins approximately 2 months following their last adventure at the V.V INN in Vampire Vacation, and focuses on an organized and pre-arranged hunt for a rogue vampire. The content is graphic and not intended for readers under 18.

Following the successful eradication and death of an ancient vampire hoping to destroy Vivian, the mistress of the V.V INN plans to invite all the participants back for a hunt. Approaching the Tribunal for a willing candidate isn’t high on her list of desired duties, but a willing candidate is the only way to get a hunt sanctioned by the ancients. There is one problem-Vivian has angered many of the Tribunal ancients and someone wants her dead. Inviting vampires from the many Seethes and werewolves from Romeo’s pack should bring enough hunters to make the week interesting, but one of her fiercest enemies will be escorting the prey to Alaska.

C.J. brings back all of the new and existing family members from Vivian’s new seethe and each character narrates several different chapters from their own POV. An interesting feature to story telling, chapters with varying points of view allow the readers to see the story at different levels and thought processes. Many of Vivian’s family members will narrate and reveal the depth of their love for their Mistress, and like most supernatural beings, the depth of their love has no boundaries. Vivian is a sexual being with the ability to manipulate reality, but the reality of her sexuality has more than one male vying for her attention at all times. But her love for her husband Rafe never falters, although she is tempted to stray through the shear magnitude of the presence of the lone werewolf who wants her for his mate.

Emiko is the rogue vampire brought in for the hunt. Charged with crimes against vampires and thus the Tribunal, Emiko is a highly skilled assassin and a former enforcer. Opting for a hunt rather than imprisoned in silver chains, Emiko will take the predators on a hunt like never before. And along the way, a second vampire will go rogue and more deaths will follow including 3 of the hunters who had come to play. But in the end, a new vampire will make his first kill and a surprising ability will manifest from inside.

THE HUNT is a great addition to C.J.’s V.V Inn series. The storyline is full of action and there is rarely any down time to catch your breath. Rafe and Vivian’s relationship will have a couple of awkward moments, but in the end a bond created by love will prevail. Vivian’s power emerges full strength and the family unit will become acquainted with their Mistresses’ ability first hand. And we have not heard the last from the Tribunal. But it is her loss of control and anger at a young vampire that I found a little disconcerting. CJ’s writing style seems effortless as the story develops and the sensuality of the characters leaves you wanting more. Looking forward to reading BIG GAME.

Vampire Vacation by CJ Ellisson-a review

Vampire Vacation (The V.V. Inn #1) and Just One Taste by CJ Ellison-a review

VAMPIRE VACATION (The V.V.Inn Book 1) by C.J.Ellisson

NOTE: Series contains Mature Adult Content

VAMPIRE VACATION is the first book in C.J.Ellisson’s V.V.Inn series focusing on the adventures of Vivian Alexandria-a 580+ year old ancient vampire with a special ability. Located in Alaska, the V.V.Inn caters to the supernatural side of humanity including vampires and werewolves, where Vivian makes all of their fantasies come true ala Fantasy Island. Vivian is the epitome of sexual desire and oozes enough sex appeal to invoke the imaginations of the guests. But Vivian specializes in manipulation, and her ability makes the guests see and hear, what she wants them to see. As the only remaining ‘manipulator’ of her kind, Vivian aka Dria has the power to control even the most ancient and her past history as an enforcer has placed her on the top of the feeding chain when it comes to power and fear. But not everyone is happy with Vivian’s success.

Vivian’s long time mate and husband Rafe stands beside his wife at all times. Although he is not a supernatural, Rafe consumes enough vampire blood to keep up with his wife’s demands and very busy lifestyle. Without a Seethe, Vivian is virtually a one-woman machine. She has never felt the need to accumulate vampires or servants to follow her every command. But events at the V.V.Inn have turned fatal when a dead body is found in one of the guest rooms, and no one can account for his identity and how he was able to find his way into the Inn unnoticed. Security at the Inn will have to be updated and increased, and a new member will soon be added to Vivian’s small family at the Inn.

Several factors begin to fall into place, when Vivian begins to notice that some of her new guests are hiding secrets. But with her powers, she will eventually discern the identity and what precipitated the dead man’s appearance. And what Vivian finds will send shock waves through the Inn.

Jonathan is a werewolf who has worked with Vivian and Rafe for 7 years. Knowing Vivian is happily mated to Rafe, has not stopped Jon’s feelings for the ancient vampire. Never mated, Jon was hoping that perhaps Vivian would change her mind, but Rafe and Vivian’s relationship is based on love and no matter the circumstances, Rafe will always come first with Vivian.

We are introduced to several of the Inn’s employees including Paul the chef-one of the few humans who has not requested that he be a donor. But Paul has a family and does not wish to risk their lives, so he prefers to keep his personal and private life separate. But events at the Inn will place everyone in danger when the person suspected of murder begins to attack those closest to Vivian and her family.

In the end, Vivian will have the Seethe she never wanted and Rafe will be happier with the security recommendations of an ex-military soldier who now spends his life as the undead. Vivian is a heroine who knows what she wants, takes no prisoners and tells it like it is. Vampire Vacation is a great start to C.J. Ellisson’s The V.V. Inn series, and I am looking forward to all of her books.

JUST ONE TASTE by CJ Elisson

JUST ONE TASTE is a pre-quel short story, approximately one chapter in length and focuses on Vivian as she re-unites with Rafe after more than a decade apart. At the present we are not sure what has happened between the two, but there is a definite sexual attraction and one that Vivian (aka Dria) does not want to pursue.

Dria is a 580year old female vampire with the special ability to manipulate reality, and an ability that is far too powerful in many eyes. But JUST ONE TASTE does not reflect the power that Dria can wield especially when a man from her past needs a place to stay for the night. Raphael was a young 17year old boy when Dria walked away from his mother’s ‘yoga’ studio but the attraction between the couple has never waivered in all those years. Rafe has apparently sought out Dria, and is willing to take their ‘friendship’ to the next level.

JUST ONE TASTE is exactly that-just one taste or small snippet – a quick look back to when Dria and Rafe first re-connected. Now that they are husband and wife, their adventures at the Vampire Inn continue with each storyline. If I am not mistaken, CJ’s new novel will focus on the backstory (pre-quel) of Vivian and Rafe.

An Interview with Lori Roy

An Interview with Lori Roy

Hi Lori.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Let’s start with some background information. Will you please tell us about yourself?

Lori: I was born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas where I graduated from Kansas State University. I spent my early career as a tax accountant and began writing when I chose to stay home with my first child. I now live in Florida with my husband and two children.

TRC: When did you start writing?  Have you always liked to write?

Lori: I can’t say I’m one of those people who always knew she wanted to be a writer. As a child, I did read a great deal. In particular, if I loved a book—i.e. THE OUTSIDERS by S.E. Hinton—I read it over and over.  I didn’t seriously pursue writing until my early thirties when I decided to be a stay-home parent. Ten years later, I sold my first novel—BENT ROAD

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information between friends and family. With whom do you bounce your ideas?

Lori: That’s easy—my husband and kids. All three are great at listening and tossing back ideas.

TRC: Is Bent Road your first book published?  What was your reaction when you saw your first published book, and to winning the Edgar award for Best first Novel?

Lori: BENT ROAD is my first published novel. I was actually out of town when the first copies of the hardback were delivered to my house, so my daughter opened the box and texted me a picture of the books inside.

Winning the Edgar award was a terrific experience as I was able to share it with my husband, some amazing writers and many fine folks from Dutton. In all the years leading up to the publication of BENT ROAD, not once did I sit at my computer and dream of winning an Edgar award, which is to say the honor was beyond my wildest dreams.

TRC: Will you please tell us about the premise of Bent Road, and what is the significance of the title Bent Road?. How did you come up with the idea for this story.

Lori: BENT ROAD is the story of the Scott family. For twenty years, Celia Scott has watched her husband, Arthur, hide from the secrets surrounding his sister Eve’s death. As a young man, Arthur fled his small Kansas hometown, moved to Detroit, married Celia, and never looked back. But when the 1967 riots frighten him even more than his past, he convinces Celia to pack up their family and return to the road he grew up on, Bent Road, and that same small town where Eve mysteriously died. Soon after the family arrives, a local girl disappears, catapulting the family headlong into a dead man’s curve. . . .

The story of BENT ROAD began with setting. As a child I visited western Kansas every summer and we still have family living there. This part of the country has always intrigued me. I have found that setting is where all my story ideas begin. After that, characters tend to spring up and lastly plot. It takes many revisions to weave all three together.

The title—BENT ROAD—is significant in a few different ways. In the literal sense, many of the story’s major events take place on the fictional Bent Road. But it also refers to what happens when we let perceptions guide our thinking.

TRC: What made you decide to write Suspense/Mystery?  Was there any favorite author or book (s) that pushed you into writing suspense?

Lori: I wouldn’t say I decided to write suspense or that I thought in terms of genre when I set out to write BENT ROAD. Instead, I worked to write a book that would make its readers want to turn the page. At the first writers’ conference I ever attended, I received the following advice—write the book you want to read. I like to read a book rooted in character, setting and voice, but I also like a plot that will keep me up at night. My goal with my work is to weave all of these elements together.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Lori: I am putting the finishing touches on my next novel, which will be out in the summer of 2013, again from DUTTON. In BENT ROAD, I briefly visited Detroit, Michigan and the riots of the late 1960s. In doing so, I discovered one of those great, gritty settings that I love to work with. My next novel—as yet untitled—is set in Detroit during the late 1950s. The simmering conflicts of that time—racial, economic and cultural—erupt on Alder Avenue when a young woman disappears. The neighborhood men temporarily abandon their factory jobs to coordinate daily search parties. The ladies set aside plans for the annual bake sale to serve sweet breads, casseroles and freshly brewed coffee to their hardworking men. But as the days pass with no news of the young woman, the neighbors begin to fear the worse. Only Grace Richardson, one of the last to see the missing woman, knows the truth of what happened. Fearing her silence puts the entire neighborhood in jeopardy, she is desperate to share her secret, but her own mother warns her against doing so … “No man wants to know this about his wife,” Mother says of Grace’s secret. “He can’t live with it. Do yourself this favor. No man wants to know.”

TRC: Where do you like to do your writing?   In a quiet room…by yourself?  Do you like to use the computer or pen to paper first.

Lori: I usually write in my home office, although I’ll occasionally take my laptop to a coffee shop if I need a change of scenery.  Generally, I do my writing on a computer, though if I’m stumped, I’ll take pen to paper.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lori: Many thanks for inviting me to participate in an interview

Bent Road by Lori Roy – a Review

Bent Road by Lori Roy – a Review

Bent Road by Lori Roy is her first novel.  This story is a suspense thriller set in rural Kansas in the sixties.  It is about a family leaving the city life in Detroit, to escape the civil unrest, and move to the Kansas countryside.  Arthur Scott left Kansas when he was young boy, and built a life in Detroit; twenty years later, he takes his wife and children and returns to Kansas.  Almost from the start, as Celia, Arthur’s wife follows him in a second car through the creepy darkness with her children in the car, that this was going to be a tense and haunting story.

Though the story is told in different eyes at times, the majority is in the eyes of Celia.  She has to watch over her children to make the transition easier, and get to know Arthur’s family, as well as trying to get used to a totally different life in the heartland. Celia finds herself in the middle of a tragedy that happened twenty years ago, that sets the stage of this story and effects them all.  Arthur’s sister Ruth plays a big part in this mystery, and over time she becomes closer to Celia.  But it is Ray, Ruth’s husband who puts the fear into their hearts.  Twenty years ago, another sister of Arthur..Eve,  was found dead.  The townsfolk openly felt that it was Ray who killed Eve, though they could never prove it.  Celia is very uncomfortable around Ray, as he looks at her suggestively.

Shortly after the Scott’s return to Kansas, another child is missing.  Rumors begin again, and the family tensions worsen.  Ray, who is a drunkard, is an abusive husband toward Ruth.  The townsfolk always ignored that, but now that Arthur is back, he finds Ruth all beaten up and takes her to his house to protect her, and keeps her away from Ray.  Arthur and Celia must face the backlash from the local priest, and old fashioned townsfolk, who do not believe a wife, should stay away from her husband, even if he is abusing her.

Despite these issues, both Arthur and Celia have to worry about their children trying to adapt to their new life.  Evie, the youngest child, cannot make friends, and becomes obsessed with the old clothes and toys of the dead sister Eve.  Daniel has trouble making friends too, though he does meet some boys, who have him practicing shooting guns, which is expected of even young boys.  Life in Kansas is not like in Detroit.  However, Elaine seems to be happy in Kansas, as she plans to wed Jonathan, who has been a good friend to the family.

Things do get worse.  Ruth is now pregnant, living with Celia and Arthur, as they try to keep Ray away.  Ray of course tries to get her back, and many a night comes banging on the door for her, not to mention when he can, he leers at Celia.  The story gets pretty exciting, as we head for a climax, where secrets will be told, truths will be discovered, and lives will be in danger.

Lori Roy does a very good job in creating this thriller through the eyes of a family that must find a way to stay together to survive.  Roy also does a good job in creating nice characters, even the bad ones.  It is a story of family, love, violence, blended with suspense and mystery throughout.  The tension during the story does have a creepy feel to it.  Lori Roy is a very good writer and since this is her first novel, we will expect more of the same from her.

Cynthia Eden-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Cynthia Eden-Interview with the Author

With the new release of ANGEL BETRAYED (The Fallen), The Reading Cafe is pleased to welcome Cynthia Eden.

TRC: Hi Cynthia and welcome to The Reading Cafe. We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about yourself?

Cynthia: I’m Cynthia Eden—I’m a southern girl…I love horror movies and happy endings. 😉 I write romance novels about demons and vampires and fallen angels. I also write romantic suspense novels that can contain some very dark killers.

TRC:Your bio outline states that you have a degree in Sociology. How has the study about the interactions of people helped with the different storylines and novels?

Cynthia: My sociology major turned me into what I think of as a “people watcher”—okay, that sounds weird but…in sociology, I learned a lot about observing behavior. I learned the meanings of non-verbal behavior, and I definitely use those non-verbal behavior cues in my books. When I want to “show” what my characters are thinking or feeling, I always fall back on my sociology studies.

TRC:  What was the catalyst that sparked your desire to write?
Cynthia:  I was the kid with the hyper active imagination. I was always dreaming up stories, and, for as long as I can remember, the only thing that I’ve really wanted to do was write.

TRC:  Which genre do you prefer to write and why?

Cynthia:I prefer to write romances because the main goal of my writing is to entertain readers. To make them happy. I figure that real-life is depressing enough. We need the guarantee of a happy ending that comes from romance novels.

TRC: Have you ever considered writing a series of Young Adult storylines?

Cynthia: I’ll confess—I have! Years ago, one of the first novels that I seriously shopped around was a young adult novel. That book didn’t sell, but I still have the desire to break into the YA market. I’ve actually recently completed another YA story (the first one I did—seriously, like 18 years ago—was a YA horror). The recent one that I’ve written is a YA paranormal about a werewolf. I guess I just can’t get away from my shifters!

TRC: THE FALLEN is your latest series of books. What have been the challenges bringing this particular series to publication?

Cynthia: I’ve been really lucky with this series. When I presented the proposal to my editor, she loved the series. Kensington has been incredibly supportive of my Fallen books. The biggest challenge was doing the research, but, since I love visiting New Orleans (the main setting for these books), the research truly wasn’t a hardship.

TRC: Would you please tell us about the premise behind The Fallen? LINK TO: ANGEL OF DARKNESS (The Fallen #1)

Cynthia: When an angel falls from heaven, his (or her) wings burn in the fall. As the wings burn away, the angel also loses his inability to feel emotion. In a way, the wings were like armor, protecting the angel from all the dangerous emotions that humans feel. So my angels go through their entire existence, never knowing emotion…until they fall. Once an angel falls, he is hit with every emotion out there, and that sudden rush of emotions can be dangerously overwhelming.
In the Fallen books, I wanted to show how my powerful angels of death would deal with human emotions. I wanted to see if those emotions would drive them insane or if emotions could actually make them stronger beings.

TRC: ANGEL BETRAYED is your latest release (June 2012). Would you please tell us about the premise?

Cynthia: Thanks so much for asking about ANGEL BETRAYED! ANGEL BETRAYED focuses on a very dark angel, Sammael (Sam for short). Once upon a time, he was the leader of all the fallen angels, but Sam broke the rules. He killed, when it wasn’t his time to take souls. He fell from heaven as punishment, but, since that fall, Sam has been enacting his own brand of justice on humans and paranormals. Sam pretty much thinks that he is invincible…then he meets the heroine of the book, and everything changes for him.

TRC: ANGEL IN CHAINS will be released in November 2012. Would you please tell us about the premise?

Cynthia: ANGEL IN CHAINS is the story of Azrael (Az), an angel who makes an appearance in both ANGEL OF DARKNESS and ANGEL BETRAYED. Okay, let me be honest—SPOILER—Az doesn’t just make an appearance in those books. He’s a very bad angel in those books. Almost evil. (Almost?) ANGEL IN CHAINS is the book in which Az tries to seek his redemption, even as he falls in love with a mortal woman.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for The Fallen? If the series becomes extremely popular with the readers, will you consider extending the series?

Cynthia: I’ve written four books in this series. If readers should want more, I’d definitely be open to writing more. I’ve had a great time with my angels, and there are a few more stories in that world that I’d like to explore.

TRC: The BOUND stories are a series of short storylines. What was the factor or decision in writing a series of short stories instead of full-length novels?

Cynthia: The main factor was timing. I’d been wanting to write a series of fairytales with a paranormal twist (or, rather, with a vampire and werewolf twist), but due to contract deadlines, I knew I wouldn’t have time to make these stories into full-length novels. So, I decided to write them as novellas. I love writing novellas—writing these books actually relaxes me—so once I started writing them, I found myself addicted to the ideas. I didn’t want to stop!

TRC: Do you have plans for any of the characters and storylines to overlap within the BOUND series?

Cynthia: That is a great question. I wish I had a good answer for you! I’m actually not sure. I will say overlap could be a possibility, but I just don’t want to promise anything on that aspect yet.

TRC: Bound by the Night is the most recent release in the BOUNDS series. How many novellas do you have planned for the series?

Cynthia: I had originally planned to do four novellas for the series (focusing on my 4 favorite fairytales), but I am giving very strong consideration to writing a full-length Bound book.

TRC: Which do you find more difficult to write- short stories where the plot and conclusion must be reached within a short period of time –or- a full-length novel?

Cynthia: I think both are equally hard, it just depends on the story itself. There are some stories that flow so quickly that writing is like a dream. But then there are other stories that make me fight and claw for every single word.

TRC: Speaking of novellas-HOWL FOR IT-your anthology with author Shelly Laurenston will be released in September 2012. What is the premise behind WED or DEAD?

LINKS TO PRE-ORDER Howl for It:
The Book Depository
B&N Nook and Paperbook
Amazon Paperbook
Amazon Kindle

Cynthia: For WED OR DEAD, I wanted to do a Little Red Riding Hood story, with a twist. (Can you tell I like twists?) My Red is a hunter, and she has just married herself to the big, bad wolf (literally).

TRC: You and Shelly have been included in many anthologies together. Is this something that is planned with your publishers or are you friends and make the decision together?

Cynthia: The anthologies are a decision that Kensington makes. The editors group different authors together for different projects. (Though I will say that I think Shelly is an amazing lady!)

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information between each other, and family and friends. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Cynthia: I bounce ideas off my husband. When I do that, he mostly just nods at me. 😉

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Cynthia: I’m writing the third book in a phoenix shifter series for Kensington Brava (I turned in the other two books in this series earlier this year). My phoenix shifters are dark and dangerous, and they sure like to play with fire.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Cynthia: I would just like to say thank you very much for the interview! It has been a pleasure!
