FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT by Darynda Jones-a review

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT by Darynda Jones

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is the first novel in Darynda Jone’s Charley Davidson Grave series. Charlotte aka Charley is a part-time private investigator and a full-time Grim Reaper. NOT a Grim Reaper in the guise of a dark cloak, skeletal hand and sickle, but a sexy, self-assured, slightly supernatural woman who helps people cross-over between the planes. And of course…she sees dead people. But these dead people usually want something from Charley and her natural ‘sparkly’ personality seems to attract the recently deceased.

Charley’s father is a retired police office and is aware of his daughter’s ability to communicate with those who have yet to cross., but to what extent is a mystery. And Uncle Bob (aka Ubie) frequently calls upon Charley to assist with murder investigations and the victim’s accountings of the events. A recent trio of murders, all partners in a law firm, have everyone looking to Charley for help including the three late lawyers. But there are those who refuse to acknowledge Charley’s ability to speak with the murder victims, and although her track record at solving the murders and uncovering clues is 100%, the non-believers will be harder to convince. But when all the clues start pointing to a possible connection between a controlling strip-club owner and a human trafficking ring, it is Charley who convinces the others, to allow her to go in undercover.

There are several secondary storylines including a domestic abuse case and missing children. And it is Charley who feels the effects of failure when she realizes that all was for not. We get a glimpse into Charley’s past including her step-mother’s anger and Charley’s desperation to save a young man from a brutal beating that could have ended his life. But life has a way of coming full circle, and some of those she has touched, will remember her for what she has done.

Darynda Jones use of spunky language, double entendre, and euphemisms will have you laughing and asking….”did she just go there?” And wait until you meet “Danger” and “Will Robinson” & “Beam Me Up “ and “Scotty” snort as well as a whole host of intricately named ‘characters’. Garret Swopes as the detective who loves to hate Charley, adds another dimension to a cast of characters with otherwise fruitful intentions. Angel, as the thirteen year old spirit who remains behind to watch over his mother: Mr. Wong-the other resident in Charley’s apartment, Cookie as Charley’s assistant and BFF, and Charley’s Aunt Lil who makes a ‘mean cup of coffee’. But it is Reyes Farrow that will grab your attention and make you sit up and ask….”what the hell…literally?”

Reyes has and will figure prominently in Charley’s life: from the day she was born. But it is her ‘erotic’ dreams of passionate kisses and sexual need that will open Charley to another existence. An existence she never thought would merge. Throughout her life, there has always been another-one who has played guardian and self-appointed executioner whenever and wherever Charley’s life was threatened. Big Bad has always lurked in the corners whenever Charley was in need, but it is his true identity that will push Charley beyond the boundaries of good and evil. And with it comes the knowledge that perhaps she has known who he was-all along. And one should always ask—before taking the devil into your bed!!! But it is Charley’s relationship with Reyes that will open up new possibilities and perhaps end her life-all in the name of heaven. For one is the portal and the other is the key.

First Grave on the Right is an amazing storyline and great introduction to Darynda Jone’s Charley Davidson Grave series. Written in first person POV, I love how we hear everything Charley thinks, surmises and holds back. I look forward to Darynda’s cast of characters and spirits, as well as Charley’s extended family. But it is the relationship between Reyes and Charley that forces my eyes open into the wee hours of the morning, hoping to catch another glimpse of what can only be called-perfection in the male of the species. Darynda’s sense of humor, sarcasm and use of bumper sticker quotes alone make this an exceptional series.

EDGE OF OBLIVION (Night Prowler #2) by J.T.Giessinger-a review

EDGE OF OBLIVION (Night Prowler #2) by J.T.Geissinger-a review

EDGE OF OBLIVION (Night Prowler #2) by J.T.Geissinger

EDGE OF OBLIVION is the second storyline (October 2012 release) in J.T.Geissinger’s Night Prowler series. The Ikati is an ancient shape-shifting species of panther, with only a few remaining colonies in the world. Similar to Christine Feehan’s Dark Carpathian series and Leopard series, each full-blooded Ikati is blessed (or cursed) with a special ability. Some are telepathic, able to shift into mist and others can walk through walls. And anyone betraying their secrets is punished by death, and Morgan Montgomery is waiting to die. Refusing to become a breeder for the Ikati, Morgan’s betrayal almost cost their Queen’s life. But her friendship with Jenna may be the only thing that keeps her alive, when the Queen offers up an alternative-locate the Expurgari-the Ikati most ancient of enemies –within 2 weeks or be put to death by an assassin.

Alexander (Xander) Luna is the personification of death. When his latest assignment takes an unexpected turn, Xander will find himself as the guardian to a condemned betrayer as she hunts for the Expurgari in Rome. As the tribe’s most lethal enforcer, Xander did not relish his position within the Ikati, but used the abilities he honed as a young shifter to mete out punishment when decreed by the King. Only this time, he found himself oddly attracted to the beautiful Morgan and was silently hoping that this particular mission would be a success-for Morgan. But little did they know, that a feral colony of Ikari had remained hidden within the catacombs of Rome and their present King had set his sights on Morgan as his mate. But the feral King rules by pain and anyone who stands in his way is immediately eliminated.

The relationship between Xander and Morgan begins as one of mutual disdain-she as a convicted betrayer and he as her delegated assassin. But along the way, Xander’s heart begins to melt when he realizes that there is more to Morgan than what she lets everyone believe. And like the panther in the wild, Xander’s attraction to Morgan is as deep as their DNA.

Throughout the story we are introduced to Xander’s fellow brothers and assassins as J.T. slowly unravels the mystery and history behind the Ikati. The colony of feral shifters, have known all along that their King is mad, and it will take a major turn of events to shift the power at the head of the Roman tribe. But it will be the mad King’s daughter who believes she has been betrayed, by the man that she loves, and it will be her need for revenge that could spark a war within her own tribe.

J.T introduces EDGE OF OBLIVION with a prologue that covers the basic history of the Ikati tribes. As a reader, the history is of major importance when the storyline ventures into a centuries old war and I, for one, am grateful when the author includes the major storyline premise with each instalment.

I like how J.T. handled the mating fever of the Ikati females. Similar to Feehan’s Leopard series, the heat will affect all of the males, regardless of their connection to the one, but in the case of Edge of Oblivion, some are more affected than others and the reality will hit home when the war between the Ikati and the Expurgari claims another victim.

Edge of Oblivion is a fascinating look at panther shifters and their legacy of love and war, hatred and pain, sorrow and loss. Similar to many other shifter storylines, there are not enough females for the males, and they have had to look to the human population for mates. But the half-bloods have some issues when they reach maturity and it is the mad King’s legacy that will continue to research and discover that his plans to re-populate the world with Ikari shifters that will pose more of a threat to humans than their own kind.

J.T. Geissinger has created an amazing world of action and romance, where man and beast are one. I am looking forward to the next storyline –here’s hoping that the mad King’s daughter can work through her issues of trust before she kills the man who would one day be her mate.

Matthew D. Fox-Interview with the Cover Model

Matthew D. Fox-Interview with the Cover Model

At The Reading Cafe we had the privilege to interview author Kyllie Griffin and discovered that the cover model for her novel ALLIANCE FORGED was Matthew D Fox. Today, we would like to introduce Matt.

TRC: Hi Matt and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us about yourself?

Matt: As a young child I was always playing all different kinds of sports. I loved soccer, basketball and baseball especially and dreamed that one day I would be a professional soccer player. As I grew a little older I became interested in becoming a surgeon and then that changed to a vet. I’ve always been a big animal lover. I never dreamed that I would be acting/modeling but it’s funny how life works

TRC: Would you please tell us about the challenges you have faced in your life?

Matt: I have faced many challenges in my life but the biggest one was definitely the illness of my father. For many years, ever since I was a freshman in high school, my dad has been battling with cirrhosis of the liver. By the time I was a junior in high school he was deathly ill and needed a liver transplant right away. The doctors were not sure if he would make it while waiting on the list to receive a new liver so my family went right to the hospital and started getting tested to see if we would be positive matches to give him half of ours. You had to be at least 18 years old to do a living donor transplant and I was unfortunately too young at the time. My mom was luckily a positive match and very bravely underwent surgery to give my dad more than half of her own liver. That was a rough experience for me, feeling helpless while both parents undergo a massive surgery. Thank goodness all went well and they both made a full recovery.

TRC:  We are glad they are doing well. Something like that is always hard, but harder for a child to understand.

TRC: You were brought to our attention as the cover model for Kylie Griffin’s ALLIANCE FORGED. Do you know the number of covers that your image has appeared?

Matt: As of today, I have been on the cover of many romance novels. I do not know the exact number but my guess would be around 300 book covers

TRC: Do you remember the first ‘romance cover’ where your image appeared?

Matt: I do remember the first book cover that I ever appeared on. It was called “Back to Luke” and I was wearing jeans and a tool belt.

TRC: There has been a significant rise in the popularity of romance and paranormal storylines, and many people attribute some of the success to the covers and the model representations used for both the hero and the heroine-readers use the image to fuel their imaginations. What is your opinion regarding the increase in popularity with both the books and the covers?

Matt: I’m not sure if the cover models or actors of romantic stories are a big factor in their success. I would like to think that we are helping to draw attention to the book but it is the writers that deserve all of the credit.

TRC: How do you feel knowing that your image fuels the imaginations of many romance readers? 😉

Matt: It is flattering to think that my image helps to fuel the imagination of the readers…except of course for when I see my mom or grandmother with one of the books haha

TRC: Who or what brought you to the world of cover models?

Matt: I was approached in a bagel store by a model scout and he basically brought me into the world of modeling. From there I began doing many photo shoots.. magazines, catalogs, etc.. And of course book covers.

TRC: There is always controversy surrounding nude photography due to the nature of the content. Some photos are sensual and sexy while others border on pornographic. What is your opinion about nude photography and what advise would you give new models just entering the business?

Matt: I do not have a problem with nude photography. I think it is just another form of art/expression and can be done very tastefully. I would advise models that are new to the industry though to only shoot what they are comfortable with and not let anyone pressure them into doing otherwise.

TRC: Would you please tell us about your daily workout regimen?

Matt: My workout routine consists of mostly weight lifting with 2 or 3 days of cardio a week. I try to work out about 4 or 5 days a week and target two body parts a day. On weekends I enjoy going for a nice jog or bike ride to change up scenery from the inside of a gym. Plus it is more fun to be outdoors.

TRC: Many photo shoots can take you to exotic locations. Where has been your favorite location and why?

Matt: I have traveled to many great locations for work but one of the nicest shoots I have been a part of was shot in Jamaica. It was 10 day shoot for Sandals Beach Resorts. I remember swimming and snorkeling on beautiful beaches with very friendly people. I also got my first scuba diving lesson there which was a very cool experience.

TRC: What do you do when you are not modeling? e.g. hobbies, work-related.

Matt: When I am not modeling, I love to travel. I love experiencing new cultures, trying new foods, and seeing different parts of the world. Whenever I have enough time off I am always looking for an adventure.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Matt: I am currently focusing much of time on acting. I have done several TV commercials and appearances on television shows but I would love to break further into the acting world and hopefully one day make it to the big screen. I really enjoy the art and look forward to seeing where it may take me.

TOXIC (Part 1) Celestra Series #7 by Addison Moore-a review

TOXIC (Part 1) Celestra Series #7 by Addison Moore-a review

TOXIC Part One (Celestra Series #7) by Addison Moore

TOXIC is the next to last instalment (September 2012 release)  in Addison Moore’s young adult Celestra series. I am not sure where to begin. I have both enjoyed and been disheartened by this series. The premise is interesting-a young girl who would be the savior in a centuries old war between good and evil, but apparently no one is willing to tell her what she is to do or how to do it. So, along the way she comes up against impossible odds, and throws everyone into a war that the Celestra are quickly losing. Without guidance, Skyla flounders in what can only be described as ‘teens gone wild’ movie premise, as she tries to convince the others they have the wrong girl.

Skyla Messenger is back in the 7th storyline along with the entire cast of Counts, Fems, Celestra, mean girls and love starved teens and yet the storyline doesn’t really progress any further along than the previous book. Skyla is still in love with Gage, Logan and Marshall, and they too, are in love with her. The angst of this particular love nest is pushing my proverbial button. I am not sure how Addison will be able to justify the eventual pairing because throughout the series each love interest has either tried to kill, killed or hurt the object of their affection more than once. As the dueling cousins, Gage and Logan are at the top of the love food chain, but each has hurt Skyla with their twisted attempts to both save and guard the young woman who is destined to rule the Celestra kingdom. And Marshall, although appearing to be a pervy old man, comes across as her knight in shining armor albeit with an ulterior motive. And I am not sure whether his motives are necessarily altruistic or something else. And to complicate the entire love quad, Skyla is in love with all 3 men, but not necessarily on an equal par.

Most of the adult figures in the storyline are either evil or oblivious to everything going on. Skyla’s adopted parents are embroiled in their own little world where trying to make babies interferes with their parenting skills as well as their ability to get a grasp on reality. And on every page her step-father hurls accusations of sex orgies and illicit drug use all the while allowing the young men of the household to participate in said dalliances. I have never seen 2 parents more oblivious to the world around them unless under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Sadly I have no sympathy for many of the characters because the lack of respect accorded the children is equal to the lack of respect in return. The storyline is a study in bad family dynamics-all around. Even Skyla’s birth mother is a questionable parent when she is willing to let her daughter die for a greater cause. Skyla is the perpetual target for her step-father’s anger, and yet the household siblings seem to live in a glass dome as it pertains to the parental units. Regardless of events, it seems Skyla is on the receiving end of too many toxic relationships in her short life.

Back to Skyla’s love life. (sigh) This must be one amazing young woman to have so many boys and men professing their love and adoration for someone so inept and clumsy that she accidently kills or maims many of the so called friends and aquaintances she encounters on her daily rituals. Not only does she have the unending worship of Gage, Logan and Marshall but her awe-inspiring persona has trapped a few other young men in her world of inept seduction and teen angst. Even the evil counts want to get into Skyla’s pants. But Skyla remains a virgin, much to her chagrin, even though she is ready and more than willing to prove her love to both Gage and Logan, by sacrificing her virginity for the greater good.

Sadly, I will be happy to see this series come to fruition. The teenage love quad alone has forced my acceptance that sometimes all things must come to an end. Several hearts will be broken unless by some miracle we discover that there are 3 Skyla’s who have inadvertently time travelled and arrived at the same time period-it is possible –she has encountered herself on many occasions in the past and future. Perhaps this is the only way to have a true HEA. I was disappointed that the storyline did not progress beyond previous book as it seem to go around in circles, but this is part one of book seven and we hope that all of our questions and concerns will be addressed in the final instalment.

Eileen Wilks-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Eileen Wilks- Interview and and Giveaway with the Author

With the October release of  MORTAL TIES, we would like to welcome the author Eileen Wilks.

TRC:  Hi Eileen and welcome to The Reading Cafe.  We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Eileen:  I’m pretty sure I’d suck at speed dating, which is what this kind of question reminds me of, but I’ll try: I love the color turquoise, my new black bean soup recipe, painting almost anything, and gardening. I hate bermuda grass, the word “utilize,” and that moment when you realize you just locked your keys in the car. I was born in Texas. By the age of twenty-one, I’d lived in 2 countries, 6 states, and 12 cities and towns. I then spent many years at the same address, but recently uprooted myself to move to Norman, Oklahoma.

TRC:  You have described your first writing experience like an alcoholic with his first drink.  What was the catalyst that started you on the road to writing?

Eileen:  A friend and I went through our second adolescent by writing what would now be called fan fic–little scenes we shared with each other based on Star Trek. I loved it, but had no idea how to go from writing a couple scenes to writing an entire book using my own characters.  Then one night I woke up at 2 a.m. with the entire plot of a book in my head.

I wrote that book in longhand on multiple legal pads.  Eventually I got it transcribed into a form I could copy and send out. The wonderful story that obsessed me for over a year was then turned down by every publisher in this country and a couple overseas.  There’s a reason for this: it was a pretty bad book. Didn’t matter. I was hooked, and have been writing ever since.

TRC:  Many authors say they have always had an active imagination since childhood and this imagination fueled their desire to write. Have you always had the desire to write?

Eileen:  I never aimed at being a writer, but I’ve been playing with stories all my life without realizing I was prepping for a career. One of my favorite things to do when I was young was to draw pictures and make up stories to go with them.  In the seventh grade, I wrote Girl From U.N.C.L.E. stories. None of this persuaded me I could or would be a writer.  It took a 2 a.m. wake-up call (see previous question) to do that.

TRC:  What challenges or difficulties have you faced as an author?

Eileen:   The usual–rejections, money, rejections, money . . . my first five books were rejected. The first book I wrote after making my first sale (to Silhouette) was rejected.  As for the money problems . . . I’ll just say that it’s easier to make it as a writer if you have a spouse earning a good paycheck who can carry you on his or her health insurance. Getting established takes time. Income is erratic and unpredictable, and often nowhere near what many readers think writers make.

TRC:  WORLD OF THE LUPI is your series featuring an elite family of wolf-shifters.  What background information can you give our readers about the series?

Eileen:   Magic is real in my lupi world. Otherwise, it looks a lot like ours. People argue, hook up, go to work, marry, sleep, weep, and spend too much time on Facebook or YouTube or that site with all the funny cat pictures.

Lily Yu is a homicide cop turned FBI agent. She doesn’t spend much time on YouTube, but she argues, she sleeps, and once in awhile she weeps. And she’s going to get married. Her fiancé is Rule Turner, known to the human world as “that werewolf prince,” and to his lupus clan as the lu nuncio, or heir. Lily works for a special Unit within the MCD—that’s the Bureau’s Magical Crimes Division. She became a cop to stop the monsters, although it was human monsters she had in mind at the time. These days, the perps she tracks may be a lot more—or a lot less–than human.

TRC:  MORTAL TIES is your 9th novel and latest release (October 2012) in the WOTL series.  Would you please tell us about the premise of this storyline?

Eileen:   FBI agent Lily Yu is living at Nokolai Clanhome with her fiancé, lupi Rule Turner, when an intruder penetrates their territory, stealing the prototype of a magical device the clan hopes will be worth a fortune–if a few bugs can be worked out . . .

But the prototype can be dangerously erratic, discharging a bizarre form of mind magic—and it looks like the thief wants it for that very side effect. Worse, whoever stole the device didn’t learn about it by accident. There’s a Nokolai traitor in their midst.  Lily and Rule have to find the traitor, the thief, and the prototype. One job proves easy when the thief calls them–and his identity rocks Rule’s world.

As they race to recover their missing property, they find Robert Friar’s sticky footprints all over the place.  Robert Friar―killer, madman, and acolyte of the Old One the lupi are at war with―an Old One whose power is almost as vast as her ambition to rock the entire world . . .

TRC:  Lily and Rule are the principal characters throughout the WOTL.  How many books do you have planned for the series?  Have you considered focusing on another couple or writing a spin-off to the series?

Eileen:   I don’t have a fixed number of books in mind, though I do know the basic premise for the last book–when the time comes to close the series. Which is not yet.  I’m contracted for another three lupi books and happy to still be spending time with Lily and Rule, but I do have another series idea floating around in my corner of the mystery swamp, a.k.a. dark matter, which as everyone knows is where writers get our ideas.

TRC:  What plans do you have for the next installment in the WOTL series? Novella?

Eileen:   I’m currently working on Book 11, Ritual Magic: Lily and Rule battle an evil that strikes far too close to home–an evil so dark it forces them into a most uneasy alliance. After that, I hope to work on a novella. That’s my version of taking a break. Novellas aren’t really instant gratification, but they’re so much quicker for me that they seem that way.

TRC:  Many authors bounce ideas with other authors, as well as family and friends.  With whom do you bounce ideas and why?

Eileen:   When I need to talk out a problem, I usually call my daughter.  She lets me babble until I realize what the real problem is–and it’s almost never what I thought. Usually I was asking the wrong question, which seldom yields a useful answer.

TRC:  Have you ever considered writing a Young Adult series of novels?

Eileen:  I don’t think I’m on good terms with my inner teenager–that isn’t a voice I conjure easily. Like most things in life, this could be subject to change

TRC:  On what are you currently working?

Eileen:  Ritual Magic, as cited above. 🙂

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Eileen:  Most eagerly awaited book for me this year: Garment of Shadows by Laurie R. King. I’m crazy about her Mary Russell character and her take on Sherlock Holmes.

HUMAN ERROR by Eileen Wilks- a review

Human Error is the 6th novella and 14th storyline in Eileen Wilks “Lupi” series which can be found in the December 2011 anthology Tied With a Bow.
Dragons, demons, witches, skinwalkers, lupin and gnomes are only a few of the supernatural beings, added to the list of potential enemies and friend.

Arjennie Delacroix, from a family of Wiccan, and Benedict, her lupin mate return home for the celebration of Yule, only to walk into a force of power that upsets the peace and calm of the local countryside. When the local authorities approach the Delacroix family for assistance tracking a ‘strange’ killer, Benedict’s hackles are raised, at the mysterious scents and unfamiliar markings, not usually acknowledged by the humans. Searching for the killer, who is now believed to have abducted a small child, Arjennie surmises a ‘mythical skinwalker’ to be the prime suspect in a series of events, that culminates with Benedict getting shot, the Wiccans once again, involved in a ‘circle’ of protection and a surprising revelation, from the family pet.

Inhuman (World of the Lupi) by Eileen Wilks-a review

INHUMAN (World of the Lupi) by Eileen Wilks-a review

SPOILER ALERT

INHUMAN is the September 2012 novella re-release in Eileen Wilks “The World of the Lupi” (originally found in On The Prowl). Inhuman follows the investigation into the deaths of 3 of The Gifted by someone or something not human. Part of the series premise focuses on The Gifted-several races that are inherently magical-of the Blood. Since The Turning a couple of months earlier, the population of Gifted beings had doubled when the power winds strengthened Existing Gifts and revealed Nascent Gifts in others. Prejudism and stereotyping were on the rise, and those with The Gift or of The Blood, were no longer trusted.

Kai Tallman Michalski was a physical therapist in Texas with The Gift. Her ability to see color auras sensing emotions had grown stronger since The Turning and her other powers had increased as well.

Sargeant Nathan Hunter is one of Kai’s best friends. Another member of The Blood, Nathan’s true nature is not known, and as a friend, Kai had never pushed Nathan to reveal his species. But following an attack against Nathan, Kai knew it was time that she and Nathan were truthful about their shared feelings.

Nathan was lonely and true to his nature, he was the only one of his kind in Texas. He considered Kai his only friend and with that, his feelings and emotions had always fallen onto the side of love and admiration. But with the recent increase in murders, among The Gifted, Nathan’s need to protect Kai increased. As a hunter, Nathan has always specialized in finding others and since his Stranding, he has had many incarnations on Earth and his most recent was that of a police officer. Only this investigation would bring him full circle-right back to his front door.

The FBI Magical Crimes Division believes they have found their murderer, but Nathan knows that the investigator holds a deep prejudice against all of The Gifted. When witnesses claim to have seen a particular Gifted in the presence of each of the victims, Nathan will make it his life mission to prove them wrong. Calling in his fellow huntsman, Nathan would discover that there is more to his best friend than he had known.

INHUMAN is a wonderful short story that reflects many of the prejudices from today and yesteryear. While there are no supernatural races roaming the Earth, we can clearly place many of the storyline scenarios into some of our news making headlines when something or someone that is different is targeted by another. Eileen Wilks has written an amazing series with her World of the Lupi and I hope that everyone has a chance to check it out.
