Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory-a review

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE (Jolie Wilkins #1) by H.P.Mallory

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE is the first storyline in H.P.Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins’s series. Jolie is a 28 year old who believes she is psychic and has the ability to see people’s auras-their life forces. But the day the handsome Rand Balfour stepped into her parlor all bets were off. He needed Jolie to help him discover who killed his client’s father, and with that, he announced she was a witch.

Rand Balfour is a warlock. As the head of the British coven, Rand needed Jolie to go back in time to the 1920’s looking for a killer. Finding the dead man was easy, but bringing him back to present day –alive- was a surprise. Jolie Wilkins could apparently re-animate the dead.

When the news about her powers reached the supernatural Underworld, Jolie would find herself on the most- wanted list in a war between the species. Each with their own agenda, Jolie was the prize. With her ability to ‘bring back’ the dead, the leaders of the warring factions needed her powers. And to make matters worse, she was told she was much more than a witch.

The relationship between Rand and Jolie was tenuous. There was instant chemistry between the pair, but Rand was ambivalent about pursuing a physical relationship. Claiming to be her protector, Rand denied his feelings saying they were now working together and he could not compromise that trust. But the real reason would soon become evident when Rand confesses his reasons as to why. With the mixed signals, Jolie refused to wait around for Rand to make up his mind. But when she was asked to re-animate the fallen werewolf pack leader, she would find herself being wooed by a wolf for all the wrong reasons.

We are introduced to Sinjin Sinclair – a powerful master vampire. When Jolie finds herself trapped with another vampire, she will soon discover, that she has become the pawn in a game between the supernatural powers. And Sinjin’s apparent relationship with her abductor became more confusing when Jolie found herself on the run, with Sinjin by her side.

In the upcoming war between the supernatural powers, each side was trying to align itself with the most powerful and having Jolie would help to re-populate the different species with some of their most powerful-albeit dead-ancestors. But when one of the more powerfully gifted supernatural species  refused to get involved, Rand had a plan that would inevitably place Jolie in a fight for her life.

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE is an amazing start to H.P. Mallory’s Jolie Wilkins series. The storyline is well-paced, the character development is smooth and entertaining, and the relationship between Rand and Jolie frustrated the hell out of me..lol. They are perfect for one another.

Bitter Blood (Morganville Vampires #13) by Rachel Caine-a review

Bitter Blood (Morganville Vampires #13) by Rachel Caine

Bitter Blood by Rachel Caine

Bitter Blood (release date November 6, 2012) is Book 13 in The Morganville Vampire Series

Blurb:

For years, the human and vampire residents of Morganville, Texas, have managed to co-exist in peace. But now that the threat to the vampires has been defeated, the human residents are learning that the gravest danger they face is the enemy within…

Thanks to the eradication of the parasitic creatures known as the draug, the vampires of Morganville have been freed of their usual constraints. With the vampires indulging their every whim, the town’s human population is determined to hold on to their lives by taking up arms. But college student Claire Danvers isn’t about to take sides, considering she has ties to both the humans and the vampires.

To make matters worse, a television show comes to Morganville looking for ghosts, just as vampire and human politics collide. Now, Claire and her friends have to figure out how to keep the peace without ending up on the nightly news… or worse.

Review:

Bitter Blood picks up a few months after the draug were defeated in Black Dawn. Michael and Eve are married, much to everyone’s dismay, human and vampire alike. The only support they get are from their best friends and housemates, Claire and Shane.

Rules are changing in Morganville. Oliver seems to have become inseparable with Amelie, the Founder. And his influence is showing. And Claire is not happy about it. Upon receiving their new “registration” cards in the mail, Claire, Shane and Eve discover that they now have to carry an I.D. card that gives all of their vital information. They are not excited about the cards, but when Eve opens Michael’s and they discover the new rules for the vampires, it hits the fan. Seems the vampires have some new rules as well, namely, they can now legally “hunt” one time a year. And that goes over like a lead balloon.

Claire and Shane go to Amelie to try and dissuade her from allowing the vampires to hunt, but Oliver is there and his influence over Amelie is undeniable. And, seemingly, ironclad. Everyone in Morganville seems on edge. Myrnin comes to Claire to tell her to get out while she can, but she refuses to leave her friends. (Due to Claire’s saving the vampires several times, the Founder has told her she can leave any time she chooses)

The Glass House, where Claire, Shane, Michael (Glass) and Eve live, is attacked by people who are NOT happy about the marriage between Michael and Eve. Both sides, vampires and humans, say it’s not natural. And the tension just keeps getting worse. To add to the tension, a television show crew shows up wanting to see if they can find some paranormal activity. Ironic, right? Well, let’s just say things aren’t always as they appear.
Things go from bad to worse quickly in Morganville. Eve is brutally attacked. Myrnin is missing. Michael is not himself, nor, for that matter, is Oliver. And, some folks just won’t stay dead. There is a play for power. Can Amelie survive this latest move? Will our fab four survive all of the fallout? What about Myrnin? Did he just up and leave Morganville and Claire? You’ll have to read and find out.

Everyone knows how much I looooove this series. And, I hate to say it, but this one fell just a little short for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book, but I expect more from the residents of Morganville. This one wasn’t action packed like the previous few books. Oh, there are revelations, some attacks and a few surprises, but just not what I was expecting. We do finally get to hear a few things from Myrnin’s POV and it made me love him even more. Two of the fab four (Claire, Shane, Michael & Eve) disappointed me to the point where I wanted to climb into the book and hit them on their heads. I know, I know!! It is YA, but dang!! All in all, a good story. I just expected more.

An Interview with Elizabeth Richards

An Interview with Elizabeth Richards

The Reading Cafe would like to welcome Elizabeth Richards. Elizabeth has just released her debut novel, Black City, last week. Before we start her Interview, lets look at her bio…

Elizabeth Richards is an award-winning journalist, who spent her early career reviewing videogames before making the bold (or crazy) move into travel writing, despite suffering from terrible travel sickness.

In her spare time, she ran a successful lifestyle website aimed at teenage girls, where she got to interview many of her favourite bands, go to gigs and basically blag loads of free swag all in the name of ‘research’.

Elizabeth lives in Buckinghamshire, England, with her husband. Black City is her debut novel.

Hi Elizabeth.  Thank you for taking the time today, to answer some questions for your fans at The Reading Café.  We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Elizabeth: Thanks for having me!

TRC: Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Elizabeth: I’m a thirty-something sci-fi and fantasy geek, who spends her spare time reading books about supernatural boys and daydreaming about dystopian worlds.

TRC: Did you always have an interest in writing?  When and how did you first start writing?

Elizabeth: Yes, writing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I often wrote short stories when I was a little girl, but I started taking it more seriously when I was a teenager and by the time I was fifteen I was writing full length novels and film scripts. I would lock myself away in my bedroom and feverishly write late into the night, then bring my notebooks into school and scribble away during break (and sometimes in class too, if the lesson was particularly boring). I was addicted to writing and by the time I left sixth form college (having spent all my study periods working on my novels instead of doing my homework) I knew I wanted to do it as a profession.

TRC: You have quite a resume as an award-winning journalist. Have you been able to apply any of your knowledge & experience into your writing?

Elizabeth: Yes, most definitely. I learnt how to write to deadlines and deal with a crazy workload, how to self-edit, and most importantly how to cope with criticism (not everyone agreed with my reviews/articles and they were pretty vocal about it, lol!). Writing is a business, and my time writing for magazines helped me learn that, so you quickly develop a thick skin and don’t take things too personally when crit partners/agents/editors suggest you revise something.

TRC: On your website, we see that you ran successful lifestyle website aimed at teenage girls.  Do you still do this? How do you feel this has helped you in writing YA?

Elizabeth: I stopped running the website when I decided to have a real go at writing and getting a book published, because it requires so much time and effort to write a novel, especially when you’ve got a full time job, so something had to give. I really enjoyed the experience and I certainly think it helped me write YA, as I started to get a better understanding of the issues affecting girls these days, what their interests were, trends that sort of thing. I also learnt a lot more about YA authors and the market, as I was interviewing them and reviewing the books so that’s helped me in my own career.

TRC: We also noticed that you are an identical twin.  Does your twin help give you ideas in writing your books?  🙂

Elizabeth: Yes, she does. She’s an amazing sounding board to bounce ideas off when I’m stuck on something. It really is like chatting to a version of myself – she instantly gets what I’m on about and so we can shorthand things – I don’t need to do lengthy explanations, and we’re totally on the same wavelength. She’s been a marvelous help over the years.

TRC: How were you notified that Black City was to be published?  Was this your first submission?

Elizabeth: It was my first submission with an agent, although it wasn’t the first book I ever wrote. That hot mess was a contemporary novel called Raising Lazarus that failed to even get me an agent. It was a good learning experience though, and I don’t think Black City would’ve been the book is it today if I hadn’t had a practice run at it and made all those rookie mistakes!

Because I’m UK based and my agent and publisher are in the US, I was actually notified via email that Black City had been picked up. My agent forwarded Putnam’s offer at around ten-thirty at night. I’ve never been so shocked or delighted in all my life. I re-read the email a dozen times, not quite believing it, before having a small meltdown (lots of happy tears and jumping up and down), then I phoned everybody telling them the good news, despite the hour. I was so thrilled! I’ve still got the email archived away, and I occasionally look at it and just pinch myself. So much has happened in the past year and I can’t believe how lucky I am, I feel so blessed.

TRC: Black City was released last week (November 13th). Can you please tell us something about the premise of the book?

Elizabeth: Here’s the official synopsis, which I think sums it up best:

A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable — they fall in love.

Bonded by a mysterious connection, that causes Ash’s long dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught they’ll be executed —but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

TRC: How did you come up with the idea for this series, and how many books do you plan for this series?

Elizabeth: The idea for Black City developed over a period of months, but it all started with Ash. His character popped into my head one night when I was watching a movie, and I just couldn’t get him out of my mind. I was fascinated by this drug-dealing, supernatural boy who gets a heartbeat when he meets his true love, and the instant the movie finished I wrote a quick scene between Ash and his best friend Beetle. From that, the plot, the world and the characters of Black City developed, but it all began with Ash.

Black City is a trilogy, and the second book is currently scheduled for release in Summer 2013.

TRC: Black City is categorized a Young Adult genre.  Why did you decide to write Young Adult?  Do you plan to stay in YA, or would you like to try other genres?

Elizabeth: I’ve been a fan of MG and YA books for years – the stories just resonate with me more (mainly because I’m still a teenager at heart), so it seemed like the natural choice to write a YA novel when I finally plucked up enough courage to give it a go. I plan to stay in YA, at least for the foreseeable future, but I have always wanted to write an MG action book for boys, so we’ll see!

TRC: What are you working on today?

Elizabeth: I’m currently revising Book #2 of the Black City series, finishing up the first draft of Book #3 and working a little on my option book. So keeping busy!

TRC: Many authors have friends or family, that they bounce ideas and information back and forth.  Do you have anyone you like to discuss your story with?

Elizabeth: Yes, in addition to my twin-sister, who I mentioned earlier, I also bounce ideas off my husband and also one of my closest friends – who also happens to be an author – named Tracy Buchanan. We’ve been friends for years as we worked at the same publishing company, and we encouraged each other to write our first ever books. We’ve been incredibly invested in each other’s careers ever since and chat every day about books, books and more books. We’re obsessed! I’m also very lucky to have a close group of friends, all of whom are experienced journalists, who I discuss ideas with as well.

TRC: Do you have a favorite author or book that has inspired you?

Elizabeth: JK Rowling has been a great inspiration to me. I just fell in love with the Harry Potter series and it really got me hooked on MG and YA books.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Elizabeth: I just want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who bought Black City and supported me over recent months with your kind words, emails, tweets, interviews and reviews. It’s truly been the best time of my life and that’s down to you guys, so THANK YOU!  I couldn’t have done it without you.

Review:

Black City by Elizabeth Richards is another YA Dystopian story.  I have read many of these this year, and most of them were excellent.  Richards’ Black City is now being added to the excellent dystopian novels of the year that I have read.

Black City is city in ruins, with the city divided by the Sentry, who are in charge; the humans, who want to revolt against the government and their horrible living conditions; and lastly, the Darklings, who are living in worse conditions, and most are segregated by a wall, that separates them from the rest of the people. What is a Darkling you ask?  They are sort of vampires, as they are pale, have fangs, and need blood.  Their taking of human blood, gives humans a high, like a drug.  There are different kinds of darklings, but most live in peace, until their lives where threatened by this government.  Now they want to fight back for their freedom.  Black City is on the brink of war, and the government is determined to eliminate all the dissidents

We meet our hero and heroine almost from the start.  Natalie Buchanan has only been in Black City for a short time; she is the Emissary’s daughter, which gives her a privileged life.  Natalie’s mother was sent to Black City by Purian Rose, the leader of this world, to clean up the budding revolution against the evil Rose. Natalie isn’t happy, as she sneaks out at night to wander the streets, and sees all the destruction, and unsettling conditions.

It is there she meets Ash Fisher, a half Darkling; he is a twin blood; with a human father and a darkling mother.  Ash, lives in poor conditions, with his human father, and nightly he goes out to sell his blood to give humans a drug high.  This is what he does to help his family survive.  If he is caught, he will be put to death.  Natalie sees Ash taking the blood of a young girl, whom she didn’t realize was paying for the drug high.  Both start off on the wrong foot, neither trusting each other.  Ash, warns Natalie, if she tells anyone, he will kill her.  She says nothing, and hurries back home before anyone notices her missing.  The days ahead she sees Ash at school, and they both ignore one another.

We also learn early that Natalie’s life isn’t as easy as people may think.  Her father was killed by the government for information, as he watched his other daughter Polly be tortured, and was subsequently killed anyway.  Her mother, who is working for the evil Purian Rose, is very hated in Black City, as she is manipulating, sadistic, and cold hearted.  Natalie has no relationship with her mother, and is always forced to have guards with her, since being part of the Sentry and being the Emissary’s daughter puts her in danger.  One of the guards is her ex boyfriend, Sebastian, who becomes a major character, though not a good one in this story.

Natalie being lonely at a new school, becomes friends with Day, who lives in poor conditions, but has high hopes of becoming part of the Sentry.  Beetle is Day’s former boyfriend, and Ash’s friend, and he is also part of the Human group fighting the government.  Though Day hates Ash, since she feels he made Beetle an addict giving him his blood for a Haze high. But, they all become friends, which pushes Natalie and Ash to be together more often, and their dislike of each other begins to change.

Elizabeth Richards does a wonderful job bringing Natalie and Ash together, despite their so many differences.  It turns out to be a beautiful romance, that at first is slow to build, but wonderfully done, as they both felt the sparks straight to their hearts.  I loved Natalie and Ash together, and how despite the difficulties for them to meet, as their romance was forbidden, they would find a way…since they were Blood Mates.  There were quite a few surprises and twists along the way.  But the crux of the story, besides their love, was the dangers involved; the developing unrest that would put Ash’s life in danger more then once, was the discovering of the conspiracies by the government that threatened to destroy them all. Natalie at first torn, sees the evil plotting that her mother, the Sentry and Purian Rose are plotting, decides to help Ash, Beetle, find out the truth.

Elizabeth Richards has also created some amazing villains, from the evil Purian Rose, who is terrible dictator; Natalie’s mom, who will let nothing stand in her way to her own reasons, which we learn later on; Sebastian, who slowly is becoming an evil disciple of Rose; and the horrible Gregory, who I wanted to kill from the start.  Very well done by Richards, in creating these villians.

The ending was very exciting, wild, and very emotional. I can’t tell you much more without being a spoiler, other then it was an emotional train wreck that left you drained.  Things do get tied up, but enough is left open for the next book to continue this series.  Black City was an excellent first novel for Elizabeth Richards, and I cannot wait for the next book.

The Better to Bite (Howl Trilogy #1) by Cynthia Eden

The Better to Bite (Howl Trilogy #1) by Cynthia Eden

THE BETTER TO BITE (Howl Trilogy #1) by Cynthia Eden

THE BETTER TO BITE is the first installment (November 2012 release) in Cynthia Eden’s new young adult Howl trilogy. This is Cynthia’s first foray into the genre of YA literature introducing the town of Haven and its’ magical inhabitants of werewolves, witches and hunters.

The woods are not safe but Anna Lambert is drawn to the eerie darkness and the unknown. Hunted and stalked by the very creatures of her nightmares, Anna will be rescued not once, but twice, by local bad boy Rafe, when he is inexplicably present whenever a wolf attack is imminent. And Rafe’s attraction to Anna will garner some unwanted attention at school.

‘Cursed’ with the ability to find ‘lost’ things, Anna has always known she was different, and the move to Haven is supposed to help Anna and her father start a new life. But horrific memories of her mother’s murder continue to haunt Anna and the move to Haven will fuel the anger of the townsfolk when it is revealed that Anna and her family have a connection to the town. With her ability to find the lost, Anna’s father (Haven’s sheriff) reluctantly uses his daughter’s powers to help locate the missing and dead victims in and around the town of Haven, but in doing so, will reveal his daughter’s special talent to the very people who were hoping her family heritage had long been buried and gone. Anna’s father had hidden a family secret that he had hoped would never be revealed and the town of Haven held more secrets than Anna ever thought could exist. Sheriff Lambert’s love for his daughter is never questioned and her safety is his number one priority, but the lives of the townspeople are threatened and Anna is the only person with the ability to ‘find the lost’.

16year old Anna is new to Haven, and like any beautiful teenaged girl, she draws the eye of every young man at the local high school including Rafe’s ex best friend and former girlfriend. Keeping her ‘curse’ a secret will be a problem when Anna finds herself a victim of a set-up and her powers will be revealed when she must retrieve the missing item.

There is a love triangle (sigh) developing, and tempers flair when Anna is warned to stay away, but the attacks against Anna will come from an unlikely source, when the identity of the wolves would reveal the true nature of the killings and their connection to Anna, her father and the town of Haven.

THE BETTER TO BITE is a fast paced storyline with a few twists and plot turns that will keep you turning the pages until the very end. Cynthia has drawn together a fascinating group of characters, and like most YA storylines, the young adults take center stage most of the time. I liked that Cynthia did not make the adults a series of cartoon replicas and accorded them with respect. Magic and the supernatural are the underlying cause of many of the town of Haven’s problems, and the resulting prejudices and stereotyping will force a young woman into a lifestyle she was hoping to avoid. THE BETTER TO BITE is a welcome addition to the young adult category and I am looking forward to THE BETTER TO HOWL in 2013.

Waldgrave Trilogy by A. L. Tyler – a Combined Review

Waldgrave Trilogy by A. L. Tyler – a Combined Review

Arrival of the Traveler – Book 1
Arrival of the Traveler by A.J. Tyler introduces Lena and her father, Aaron who lived like nomads (mom died when Lena was five); travelling and exploring the world like adventurers.  Following her father’s sudden death, Lena’s world starts to unravel and she questions if that life was really “normal”.  Gone is the only comfort and security she unwittingly took for granted.  Perhaps there was a reason behind her father’s restless nature?  When you move…people can’t find you.

Forced to relocate and live with Uncle Howard, her only living relative, Lena moves into Waldgrave Estate.  Far from convivial, Lena fends for herself and immediately notices how very strange this new home is.  Paintings and portraits are disappearing, clothes are hanging in her once-empty closet, and previously blank books suddenly appear written.  The house is a veritable labyrinth, but Uncle Howard admonishes her interest and warns her not to venture to the fourth floor of the estate.  When she makes her first friend, an older boy named David who works at Waldgrave, he tells her she’s not the “sharpest knife in the drawer”; the estate is welcoming her home!  WHAT?!  “Can’t you read my thoughts, Lena?”  Her unconscious body lying on the ground is a resounding NO.  When Lena comes to, she discovers her mother, Ava is very much alive.  Instead of landing on her feet and acclimating herself, Lena is thrust into an ancient community of telepaths known as the Silenti and her future now hinges on her acceptance of this new world.

Waldgrave Estate is the center of a theology divided.  Lena’s powerful, maternal family, the Darays, is considered royalty and subscribe to the Old Faith whose allegiance focuses on the existence of the much-maligned portal (an entrance to their original homeland that can only be opened by an heir).  The paternal Collins line is considered the New Faith (aka the Integrationists), who have mixed with humans and are diluting the pure blood.  In a bitter feud spanning centuries, Lena is pushed and pulled from the onset.  Not only is she struggling to believe her long-denied abilities (death “foresight”, mental communication) are going to continue to develop, but both sides of the family, including the creepy figure that has been watching her from the prohibited upper floor (her grandfather/mother’s father), are asking her to align with their faith.

It’s hard not to admire a young lady like Lena.  In a matter of months, she lost her father (primary guardian), her maternal grandmother (actually paternal, but it’s just the first of many lies), and now her mother has reappeared.  Arrival of the Traveler sets the foundation for Lena’s life.  She is a spirited, resilient young woman who must pave her own way and not fall, or follow, absentmindedly with either side of the family.  If Lena thought she could remain neutral regarding the conflicting philosophies, the real threat revealed shattered that paltry hope:  To keep the portal from being opened, Lena, as the last royal Daray heir, is a target.  The clandestine current within the labyrinthine home, replete with individual agendas, is the perfect setting to conceal everyone’s secrets.

Deception of the Magician – Book 2
Lena is now the only female member of the Silenti Council, but it isn’t such a welcome victory.  Due to Master Daray’s notoriety, no one truly knows what “side” Lena supports.  Bigger problem?  Neither does Lena.

Having set quite the precedent with her membership, Lena’s every move is scrutinized.  As the granddaughter of both Silenti faiths, the Council figures she can either lead the New Faith’s integration or finally open up the portal and return the Old Faith to original ruling.  Lena just turned 17 – she wants to live like a teenager, but her visits are monitored, her interactions are limited and outings are nearly prohibited.

Then there’s Griffin aka David!  He misrepresented himself to get into Lena’s good graces, but it turns out he’s Master Daray’s right hand and all-around puppet and…I like him!  I like that he challenges Lena on her negative opinions about her grandfather.  There is a budding romance, but the author kept that maddeningly subtle!  As we come to discover many hidden truths in the introductory novel, why is Lena so quick to pronounce the Darays evil?  It’s actually a pretty immature explanation:  If Lena gets the support of the Integrationists, she’ll be allowed some independence (or so she thinks):

“I propose to mount an expedition to find the portal and put it where it belongs:  in the capable hands of the Council, under lock and key, so that we will never have to fear the unknown again…I can aid in finding it, but I pose no threat to opening it.”

This is me losing my patience with Lena!  Impetuous to the core, Lena forges ahead with the plan, but never fully considers the dangers ahead.  In their travels, you didn’t think the Council would let her travel on her own, did you?  10 Council members plus Lena, her mother and Griffin embark on a mission to procure the portal by retracing her grandfather Collins’ (only confirmed Silenti to have seen it) steps to Ecuador.

Enter Griffin and his need to put things into perspective (as well as blow off some steam; Lena tends to evoke fevered reactions out of him):

“You’re the one turning the world upside down because you think it will buy your freedom, but let me assure you it won’t.  None of them have any intention of ever letting you out of Waldgrave.  You’re the ungrateful brat who’s dragged us all out here on a worthless pursuit so that you can put power in the hands of the New Faith Representatives.  And once they have it, our support is gone.  They’ll have all the control, and they’ll do with us as they please.  Our lives are over after you put it in their hands.”

A series of unfortunate events transpire along the way and the journey isn’t without a multitude of mishaps and full-out attacks.  Someone is watching the caravan of Silenti and is determined to keep them from acquiring the portal.  Lena manages to relive her grandfather’s final moments (oh, yeah, he died shortly after discovering the portal) and the vicarious experience shatters her decision to have even pursued the “prize”.

Book 2 definitely contained more action, but I still feel we’ve gone nowhere fast.  Tragedy struck and lives were lost.  Lena is back at Waldgrave with her life intact, but back to a dejected “square one”.  I wanted to fling my Kindle during several moments of the book.  Why take all these purposeful steps, inspire the New Faith, only to regret the proposal and deflate their optimism?  It literally felt like Lena gave up and proved her immaturity (and Griffin’s theory).

“She wanted to go back to Waldgrave and she didn’t.  She didn’t know what she wanted, but she knew she didn’t have it.  And not knowing what she wanted, she didn’t know where she should be going or how to get there.  An alarm went off in her brain; she knew she was treading dangerous waters.  If she couldn’t pick a direction, she would drown.”

I know I used a lot of quotes in this review, but they were so poignant and depicted the characters’ states of mind so perfectly, my mere words wouldn’t have sufficed.  The last quote in particular describes a rambling Lena; utterly confused after taking on such an endeavor…and the panic she faces as a result.  Does she sink or swim?

Secrets of the Guardian – Book 3
Secrets of the Guardian
was my favorite book of the series!  Book 2 rattled me because Lena’s naiveté minimized the potential dangers she and the Silenti members would face; the lengths to which the rogue faction would go to prevent the portal’s recovery.  But if mistakes aren’t a sign of growth, I don’t know what is?

Lena’s safe at Waldgrave, but when the magician is revealed at the conclusion of book 2, the deception alters Griffin’s beliefs and he flees the estate with no intention of returning.  An old “friend” turns out to be responsible for the ambush on the Silenti caravan; Rollin speaks for the “human-born” Silenti who are considered lower class and disallowed on the Council.  He continues to wreak havoc on the Silenti and overthrows Waldgrave.  Lena, under advisement of Uncle Howard, is on the run.  To be fair, diaries and journals discovered in Master Daray’s secret basement contained detailed events that dispelled many rumors, but begged to be explored (as if we could hold back Lena!).  When Dr. Evans, the Silenti physician, furtively provides Lena with an address in South Carolina…to another living Daray relative…Lena doesn’t hesitate to escape the upheaval at Waldgrave.

**Drum roll, please**  The mystery relation turns out to be her maternal grandmother who exposes the true, but dark Daray family history.  To say the knowledge was enlightening is the understatement of the year!  Lena’s instincts were sound.  Before long, Lena discovers she is being followed.  Someone must have intercepted her emails to Uncle Howard and tracked her location.  Lena is on the run…AGAIN, but this time is different.  So different, she reaches out to Griffin.  Inspired by the outcome of her grandmother’s revelations, Lena concocts a plan that will make Griffin her partner.  I know Griffin was off having a tantrum, but this newfound awareness changes EVERYTHING.  Their connection might have been subtle (the romance even more so), but this pair has been inexplicably attached; it’s time to learn why (SOOO good!) and stop resisting.  Griffin managed to elicit a swoon (or two) out of me!

Lena stops living in the echoes of her family.  She is tired of running and wants to unite the Silenti.  The vacillating relationship with Griffin becomes a profound partnership that will keep them on a level playing field.  Ever hopeful, I pray it develops into full-blown romance more than a merger.

Final analysis:
What a thoroughly intriguing trilogy!  I was on the proverbial “rollercoaster ride” throughout the series with all the twists and turns inside Waldgrave and out.  There were maddening constants that kept me on edge:  Lena’s choices weren’t always cautious (but she is a teenager); while so closely guarded at one point, the author kept her on the run for far too reasonable a time by any parent/guardian’s standards (why Uncle Howard wasn’t more proactive bothered me!); and my biggest complaint were too many adults looking out for themselves.  Whenever Lena had the gumption to ask her mother about the past, Ava would tell her she couldn’t handle it.  Actually, Ava kept to a “pick and choose” mentality where the truth was concerned and I couldn’t believe the author would think her audience so forgiving.  In the end, I loved watching Lena’s evolution from child to young woman.

As much as I’ve highlighted in this review of the trilogy, there is so much left for you to love.  I couldn’t have asked for a better ending (yes, I screamed out loud!), but the epilogue…floored me.  Surely there’s more to come…right??!!  A worthy read to be enjoyed by all ages.  I’m ready for more.

Dark Kings Series by Donna Grant- a review

Dark Kings Series by Donna Grant

DARK CRAVING (Dark Kings #1) by Donna Grant

Barnes and Noble / Amazon / KOBO

DARK CRAVING is the first novella (July 2012 release) in Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series focusing on an ancient group of Dragon Kings and the secret they hold close to their hearts. Centuries ago, Ulrik the Silver Dragon King was betrayed by a woman, and the others took it upon themselves to end her life but making an enemy of one of their own. Now forced to live at Dreagon,( in the Scottish countryside) to ensure the safety of both dragon and man, the others must abide by King Constatine’s rules knowing they would never be able to find the love of a woman because of an act of betrayal so many years ago. But the Green Dragon King Haldor Wilson has found someone and their attraction to each other is immediate. Is Hal willing to risk everything to be with the woman he knows to be his mate or give her up to keep peace within between the Dragon Kings?

Cassie Hunter was broke, unemployed and depending on the help of her brother in Scotland, and moving to Europe was her only option knowing she was leaving a mountain of debt behind. Alone, freezing to death and frightened, Cassie would soon find herself in the arms of a very beautiful stranger and something about the man was different. It wasn’t long before Cassie craved the arms of the stranger who saved her life not once but twice. But when Hal never returned, Cassie realized that not only was she destitute and alone, but she was heartbroken as well.

Hal knew it was against the Dragon laws to take up with a woman, especially a human woman, but the laws were in effect to safeguard their secret. The last time their secret was revealed, the Dragons were plunged into a war with each other, and were forced to kill hundreds of humans when the Dragon’s existence garnered fear and loathing among mankind. But Hal knew he had found his mate in Cassie, and was willing to risk the wrath of the Constantine in order to save his mate. With only two options available, Hal knew erasing Cassie’s memory of their time together would prevent another war between the Kings.

DARK CRAVING is a fast paced, short storyline that introduces the premise behind Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series. The background and story behind the Dragon Kings’s current dilemmas is revealed but it doesn’t overwhelm the senses or the reader’s mind. The attraction between Cassie and Hal is immediate, and the relationship although quick to build, is not unwelcome or unexpected. Donna has brought to life a mythical creature with all the foibles and concerns of their human counterparts, but adds the mystery of a time honored tale about Dragons and their history with mankind.

NIGHT’S AWAKENING (Dark Kings #2) by Donna Grant

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

NIGHT’S AWAKENING is the second storyline (August 2012 release) in Donna Grant’s Dark Kings novella series. It has been five months since Dragon King Haldor found his human mate Cassie, and the Dragon King’s of Dreagon ( in the Scottish Highlands) believe that their magic is still intact. But when they discover two trespassers in the caves of Dreagon, Guy is immediately taken with Elena Griffin.

When Elena’s boss (from PureGems) died during their caving excursion, she realized she was alone, in a strange country with a possible broken ankle. But no sooner had she tried to move, when 3 strangers came to her rescue. Questioning why Elena was in the caves, she was unaware that there were secrets these men were trying to hide. But it is her attraction to Guy that shocked her the most. There is an instant chemistry and Guy would soon become overly protective.

Guy is surprised when all of his protective instincts to guard and keep Elena safe go into overdrive. If it wasn’t for Dragon King Haldor’s similar reaction to discovering his mate, Guy would have been confused. He and the other Dragon King’s recognized Guy’s immediate attraction to Elena, but it was Constantine who needed to be reassured that Elena knew exactly what she was about to do. No sooner had Elena and Guy professed their love for one another, did Con reveal that the Dragon’s secret had been uncovered and their whereabouts now known. Elena would become part of a bigger secret when the Dragons went on a voyage of discovery to find out who was willing to reveal the existence of dragon shifters and why. They were heading to London to uncover who or what was behind the plot.

NIGHT’S AWAKENING is another fast paced and intriguing storyline in Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series. We learn more about the Dragon King history and as well as getting a re-cap of the information initially revealed in the first storyline-Dark Craving. I applaud and welcome the authors who include important information previously revealed in earlier storylines. This information keeps the reader involved and allows new comers to the series to remain attached especially if the series is read out of order. I do not recommend reading this series out of order, but the already revealed information is a bonus for everyone, Donna does an amazing job keeping the storyline intact and the relationship between Guy and Elena is both hawt and seductive. We all need a dragon in our own lives.

DAWN’S DESIRE (Dark Kings #3) by Donna Grant

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

DAWN’S DESIRE (Dark Kings #3) is the third storyline (September 2012 release) in Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series. Dawn’s Desire takes up immediately following the end of Night’s Awakening where Elena Griffin must go undercover to discover who is threatening to reveal Dreagan and the Dragon’s secret. Jane Holden also works at PureGems and couldn’t help her immediate attraction to the new limo driver Banan. As assistant to the Richard Arnold, PureGems CEO, Jane was the first person from whom Banan had hoped to get information regarding Richard and why they were sending people to Dreagan in the Scottish Highlands.

Banan is a Dragon King. Undercover as the new limo driver for PureGems, Banan couldn’t stop thinking about Jane. And his attraction to the American working in England was even more overwhelming when he realized that this woman, whom he was sent to investigate, could very well be his mate. Jane would soon be involved with the investigation at PureGems when she overhears a telephone conversation mentioning Dreagan, between Richard and an unknown caller. Her life hangs in the balance, when she finds herself the victim of an abduction at the hands of a Scottish stranger who knows just as much about the Dragon Kings as their own kind.

DAWN’S DESIRE is another fast pace and fascinating storyline in Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series. Now that three of the Dreagan Dragon’s have found mates, we will certainly see the beginnings of an extended family. Donna’s ability to include all of the necessary background information from storyline to storyline is a bonus for any reader. You can’t help but fall in love with the Dragons from the Scottish Highlands. And of course, throughout the series, the Dragon Kings continue to reassure themselves that Ulriik is no longer a threat, but it looks like they may have been complacent a little too long.
