Wallbanger by Alice Clayton-a review

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton-a review

WALLBANGER by Alice Clayton

WALLBANGER is the November 27, 2012 adult contemporary release from Alice Clayton. Like the name implies WALLBANGER’s focus is on the nightly entertainment heard from the other side of the wall. Caroline “Pink Nightie” Reynolds is a designer and an excellent chef who has just sublet her boss’s apartment only to discover that her new neighbor entertains several women and, their hot and heavy sex can be heard through the walls. When a pink nightie clad Caroline finally confronts a sheet wearing, gorgeous Simon “Wallbanger” Parker in the wee hours of the morning, their attraction to one another can be cut with a knife.

Wallbanger is filled with one-liners, innuendo, many, many humorous moments, the ‘hunt for the missing O’, and plenty of sexual tension, sexual chemistry and sexual frustration. Anyone remember Kim Cattrall’s character in Porkys and how she got the nickname Lassie? Well Caroline has nicknamed of few of Simon’s conquests: Spanx, Purina and Giggler. Caroline and her two BFFs meet weekly to compare notes about what is happening in their lives and when Caroline finally confesses her attraction to the Wallbanger, the trio of friends cannot hide their amusement and curiosity especially when Caroline’s description about the ‘sounds’ and ‘sights’ from Simon the Wallbanger. And the storyline progresses as Simon’s buddies are attracted to and start hooking-up with Caroline’s friends. The only complication-Caroline and Simon’s thinly disguised attraction to one another is hampered by Simon’s past. Caroline is unable to forget the nightly parade of women and the wallbanging memories of moans, giggles and ‘meows’; and Simon confesses that he doesn’t do the girlfriend or dating scene. ‘Friends with benefits’ is more his style or ‘just friends’.

Alice Clayton draws the reader into the storyline as we read the ‘text messages’ and follow the lives of Simon and Caroline as they grow closer to one another without crossing the line from friendship to lovers.

Excerpt:

Simon: “I can’t believe this is the second time we’re cleaning flour and sugar off each other. What’s wrong with us?”

Caroline: “The sugar is good for exfoliation. Not sure what good the flour is doing us, though.”

Simon: “Exfoliation?”

Caroline: “Yeah, I figure every time we sex it up out there, all that sugar helps us remove dead skin cells.”

Simon: “Really, Caroline? Dead skin cells? That’s hardly sexy.”

Caroline: “You weren’t complaining earlier”

Simon: “Well no, how could I? You promised to bake me an apple pie. Don’t forget that part.”

Caroline: “I won’t forget, but I was somewhat under duress.”

Simon: “ You were under me, not under duress, under me.”

Oh, don’t get me wrong, they will eventually become more than lovers, but there are a few heartbreaking moments when Simon’s rejection of Caroline sends her into the arms of an ex-fiance with thoughts of rekindling the past.

WALLBANGER is a wonderful, enjoyable and humorous look at the frustrations of a successful twenty-something designer as she embarks on a seductive ride to discover herself and the man with whom she has fallen in love. This is my first Alice Clayton novel and I am looking forward to many more.

NOTE:  WALLBANGER was originally a piece of fan-fiction, written by Alice Clayton, using the characters from the Twilight series.  Thanks to Carmen and her adept inner ‘everything Edward/Robert’ sixth sense, we have tracked down some of the original fan-fiction and the storyline is virtually identical-only the names have been changed. The author (and bloggers) have removed most of the fan-fiction from various sites, but there are a few bits and pieces of the original floating around.

Wild About You by Kerrelyn Sparks-a review

Wild About You by Kerrelyn Sparks- a review

Wild About You by Kerrelyn Sparks

Book 13 (Released November 27, 2012) in the Love at Stake series

About the book:

Handsome Howard…Hunky Howard… Hot Howard…
It’s not every day that Elsa Bjornberg feels fragile, not when she hosts a home renovation show where she can effortlessly demolish a kitchen. But from the moment she meets Howard Barr, this bear of a man makes her feel like a woman. And the way he looks at her, as if she was a pot of honey he’d like to lick…

Howard is not like most men. For one thing, he’s a shapeshifter. And he always thought his celebrity crush would never amount to anything more than drooling at Elsa on the TV. When his meddling vampire employer gets involved, the star is suddenly within his grasp—and within a hair of her life. For an ancient curse forbids their newfound love, and Howard is suddenly torn between his desire for her and his desire to keep her alive.

Review:
Wild About You begins with Howard on vacation in his home state of Alaska. He found out in book 12, Wanted Dead or Alive, that his arch nemesis, Rhett Bleddyn, is alive. Howard and Rhett went to school together and became bitter enemies. Rhett, a werewolf, had made it his mission to torture Howard in any way he could. It culminated with Howard’s girlfriend being killed by Rhett. Howard and Rhett fought and Rhett went over a cliff. Howard ended up being banned from Alaska, mistakenly being blamed for having a part in his girlfriend’s death. He took the punishment in order to keep his family from the Bleddyns, who were power hungry and had a very large pack whose numbers were far more than the were-bears.

Howard enlists the help of his twin cousins, Jesse & Jimmy, and Dougal and Carlos, a vampire and a shifter who teleported in to check into why Howard was still in Alaska. Howard is systematically going after Rhett’s holdings. He’s already destroyed two homes, and now, he’s after Rhett’s financial records. Upon retrieving that information, his lifelong friend, Harry, who writes for a local paper, starts printing stories that show just how underhanded and devious Rhett is.

While Howard was away in Alaska, Shanna Draganesti, one of Howard’s employers, discovers his secret crush. Elsa Bjornberg, who happens to be on a home renovation show. And you’ll never guess…………. Shanna has a house that needs renovating.

When Howard and Elsa finally meet face to face, their mutual attraction is instantaneous. Unfortunately, there are many things at play. The curse that they have both been told about all their lives, which they both always thought was more lore than fact, comes center stage. And Rhett is lurking in the background, ready to make Howard suffer for revealing his secrets. Will Howard be able to keep Elsa safe? And, how about the curse? You’ll have to read to find out.

I have been waiting for Howard’s book for a long time and definitely wasn’t disappointed. Howard is strong, loyal and hot!! And, Elsa is perfect for him. Sparks always writes with humor in her stories, and this one delivers on that aspect too. There were touching moments, sad moments and hot moments. We get to catch up with a few old friends and meet some new ones. I’m looking forward to the next in the series. If you’ve not read this series, you’re definitely missing out!! It is one of my must read series and hope that it becomes that for you as well!!

Luca’s Magic Embrace by Kym Grosso-a review

Luca’s Magic Embrace by Kym Grosso

LUCA’S MAGIC EMBRACE by Kym Grosso

LUCA’S MAGIC EMBRACE is the second storyline (October 2012 release) in Kym Grosso’s slightly erotic Immortals of New Orleans series. Kym brings together an assortment of supernatural powers including vampires, werewolves and witches and writes a sexy, dark and dangerous blend of seduction and magic.

Samantha Irving is a computer wiz and a reluctant witch. With her powers of magic at a virtual negligible level, our heroine takes a long overdue vacation to recover from a recent abduction and introduction into the world of submission and sexual dominance. Refusing to live and train with the coven of witches, Samantha embarks on a journey to recover her memories and discover which path will lead her to her future. But her escort will soon find himself the victim of another attack and Samantha will suffer with the guilt of knowing that he risked his life to bring her to safety.

Luca MacQuairie is a 200 year old vampire who has a dislike for humans yet he found himself oddly attracted to the battered and abused Samantha Irving. Samantha’s safety was a priority knowing that someone was trying to control her life, but Luca’s life is about to take a dramatic turn when he is bound in silver and his life blood is drained. Without any knowledge of what has happened or who attempted to end his life, Luca needs time to recover and then goes on the hunt for the little human witch who has occupied his thoughts.

I never had the chance to read the first book in the series Kade’s Dark Embrace where Luca and Samantha are first introduced. Although Kym explained that I would not be missing any vital information, I realized that Luca’s character has taken a 180 degree turn from the previous storyline which probably would have made for a different feel to the character and story. I liked Luca. He was an amazing alpha vampire who was turned during the war of 1812. He had lost much in his human life and believed he would never find love again. He was cold, without feeling and only lived to support his maker and friend Kade. But all that changed when the spunky little witch entered his life and literally brought him to his knees.

As the story progresses, we discover the reason Samantha has been hunted. Without her memories of the time she was in captivity, she is unable to process or recall any of the events while she was away. Hoping to unlock the mystery, Samantha and Luca venture back to the coven only to realize that Samantha is no longer welcome and something about the others doesn’t feel right. They will soon discover that a powerful and ancient source of magic is the prize in a war between the species, and Luca and Samantha are caught in the middle of this particular battle.

The relationship between Samantha and Luca progresses quite quickly when Luca realizes that not all humans are alike. Samantha will soon discover her powers and once she learns to control and command, she will be a deadly force to be reckoned with. She is the perfect match to Luca’s alpha personality.

There is some BDSM as it pertains to a sex club where Samantha was held prisoner, and she and Luca will experiment together behind closed doors. But the content is minimal and just enough to get the pages a little steamy. The story will open with a sexual encounter between friends that is explained as a necessary evil in the world of the vampire if only because the thrall of the feed induces sexual pleasure.

Overall I enjoyed Luca’s Magical Embrace. Kym writes a storyline filled with passion and love, and there is none of the angst of the push and pulling of personality conflicts that many storylines feel compelled to add. We didn’t have to wait until the end of the book to realize that Samantha and Luca were perfect for each other and neither did they. I hope to read more about this particular couple, because their future together has been gifted and blessed.

Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews – a Review

Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews – a Review

Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews is the 4th book in their Edge series. For those of you who may not know, Ilona Andrews is the husband & wife team of Ilona and Gordon Andrews.  I am a big fan of Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, and when they started the Edge series, I continued with them.  I have not been disappointed, and this is a wonderful series.  I know that this book supposedly ends the series, which does disappoint me, but more on that at the end.

Steel’s Edge continues with the premise of the world of the Edge, Weird, and Broken.  Richard Mar is our hero in this book, as we know him from earlier books, being the brother of Kaldar & Cerise’s cousin.  Richard is on a quest to put a stop to slavery, and find out who are the masterminds behind it, and when we meet Richard, he is being hunted by the slavers and is gravely injured.

Charlotte de Ney is our heroine, and we meet her at the start.  She is a top healer, who is married to Elvei, and though she can heal almost anything, Charlotte cannot heal herself.  She confirms her worst suspicion, that she is barren and cannot have any children.  To her dismay, her husband annuls their marriage, as he proves he did not love her, only wanted children by someone with her title.  Charlotte accidentally loses her cool, and harms Elvei briefly when she discovers the truth of his betrayal.  Charlotte knows she can never lose control of her healing powers, as the dark side of healing is seductive and difficult to control. As her adopted mother would say, losing control will make her an Abomination, with the power to push diseases, such as leprosy, plague on unsuspecting people, a dangerous and destructive power.  She then runs away, in fear of allowing the dark side of healing to come forth, and goes to the Edge, where her powers are weakened.

Charlotte finds herself not accepted in the Edge, until she meets Eleonore Drayton, the grandmother of Rose, George and Jack, whom started it all in the first book, On the Edge. Three years later, Charlotte is now an important part of the Edge, and Eleonore has become her closest friend & ally.  It is here that Charlotte meets Richard, who as we noted earlier is gravely injured.  Charlotte manages to start his healing process, but then when Charlotte goes for supplies, the slavers come upon the Drayton house and they want Richard, who is called The Hunter.  When Charlotte returns, Eleonore is dead, as well as a young girl who was visiting, and Richard was taken by the slavers.  Charlotte finds out about these slavers, and how they terrorize young children, sell them to slavery in the Weird, or just torture and kill them.  Something in Charlotte snaps, and she leaves the Edge to try and find the slavers, and enact revenge on losing her dear friend.

As she enters the Weird, Charlotte feels all of her powers return fully. She finds the camp, sees Richard in a cage locked up. As the slavers look at her, and rejoice on their good luck at seeing a pretty woman come to them, Charlotte pulls her dark side of healing into her and slowly sends out a disease (one of many she stores) to the unsuspecting slavers. One by one they start coughing, bleeding, and start dying.  Richard watches from the cage, amazed at what he sees.  When it is over, and all the slavers lie dead, Richard convinces Charlotte to let him out of the cage and to trust him.  He tries to convince her to go back to the Edge, but Charlotte refuses to listen to him, and is determined to help destroy all the slavers, and the masterminds behind it.  Together they go on a journey that will reveal so many horrors that will emotionally affect Charlotte, as well as the reader.  But it also brings Richard and Charlotte together.

This is a very nice romance that develops, especially during their difficult travels and adventure.  Charlotte becomes a strong woman, who will stand up to evil, but it is Richard who will become her savior. Richard, who thought he would never find a woman that would understand him, and in Charlotte’s case, not look down at him as an original Edger, as she is more royalty.

One of the best things about the book, besides Richard and Charlotte, was seeing George and Jack again.  I have loved them from the first book, and though they are still teenagers, they are both awesome.  Sophie (formerly Lark in earlier book) has also turned into a wonderful strong character.  The three of them work with Richard and Charlotte to reveal the mastermind, and bring him down.

It was a an exciting story from start to finish, with a nice romance, lots of adventure, evil villains, favorites appearing from earlier books, but it is also a very emotional ride with all the horrors they will face along the way.  The ending was an emotional turmoil, as Richard must rise up to find a way to save his love, who risked everything to save those she loved.

Ilona Andrews has done a wonderful job in creating this fabulous series, and Steel’s Edge was a great read.  Especially after reading this book, I am not a happy camper that the series ends.  There is so much more they can do to continue the series, especially with great characters still to come like, George, Jack and Sophie; as well as major characters from the earlier books to help.  I have read though that even with the end of the Edge series, Andrews is considering another possible arc with the three names I mentioned.  Let’s hope.

Black Moon Awakening by Lina Gardiner-a review

Black Moon Awakening by Lina Gardiner-a review

BLACK MOON AWAKENING by Lina Gardiner

BLACK MOON AWAKENING (released May 2012) is a novel written in a combination of urban fantasy and the paranormal. Lina Gardiner blends the shape-shifting world of the Therian, the aggression of the werewolf, the power of the Egyptian gods and, the humans who want it all, into a fast paced story where the enemy could be your best friend or the neighbor next door.

Jude Black is a powerful Therian shape-shifter and a high level operative that specializes in targeted killings. But on Jude’s latest fact-finding mission (at Eideroche Medical) for the Senate, everything will go wrong– the trainee in his custody is presumed dead and Jude is accused of his murder; and Jude discovers a female werewolf who has been imprisoned and used for medical experiments. Jude is drawn to the werewolf which is wrong on so many levels but the most important is that the Therians and the werewolves are mortal enemies.

Letitia Hawke is the only female Tracker and daughter of the werewolf clan alpha, and has no recollection of recent events. Thinking everything that has happened has been a bad dream, Letitia will discover more than one bloody body has been left with all the evidence pointing to her. With the help of Jude, they will uncover the details that each has become a pawn in an impending war between their species-Jude has been set up by the very people with whom he works and Letitia’s special DNA has been used in an experiment to build an army of hybrid soldiers. But some of the experiments have gone horribly wrong.

There is plenty of mystery and misguided belief. Jude’s brother has been missing and his whereabouts unknown, but with Jude’s special abilities he will discover the true extent to what has happened and who may be to blame. But keeping Letitia out of the hands of Eideroche Medical is one of Jude’s priorities. When their only option is to expose Letitia to the others, both will discover that their powers and abilities are much stronger and stranger than anyone could have imagined.

Lina Gardiner brings together two powerful species of shape-shifters; the embattled mythological history and legacies of the Egyptian gods Horus and Set; a werewolf clan on the verge of destroying themselves and; the many secrets that have been withheld for the good of the few. There is a power struggle within the Therian nation and Senate, and Jude and his family heritage are at the center of it all.

BLACK MOON AWAKENING is an interesting and fascinating look at two shape-shifting species with a history of hatred and animosity between the worlds. At times, the writing was descriptive and intriguing, and at other times it was simple especially during the conversation and interactions between characters-the writing is much stronger in the descriptive narration. Gardiner’s attempts at world building are interesting and colourful and, I hope she spends a little more time in the Underworld of Theria in her next instalment. There is plenty of suspense, intrigue and deep, dark secrets that are slowly revealing a lifetime of lies and betrayal.

The relationship and interaction between Jude and Letitia left me wanting more-more as in a romantic adventure, but Black Moon Awakening is not a romance novel per say. It is more of an urban fantasy suspense adventure. There is definitely an attraction and sexual chemistry between Letitia and Jude-one that needs to be explored- but there was little time for romance and no time for sex. I did miss the lack of one-on-one time.
