REVIEW: REVENGE OF THE MAD SCIENTIST is the first storyline in Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles written in the Steampunk genre.  For those of you not familiar with Steampunk there is a detailed description on Wikipedia at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk  But a simple explanation  would be a ‘sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, often set in alternative history of the 19th century British Victoria or American Wild West.’

REVENGE OF THE MAD SCIENTIST incorporates most of the detailed description as outlined on Wikipedia including steam-powered air-ships, finitely detailed machinery and inventions as well as the clothing made popular by the genre:  women’s corsets, fancy gowns, men’s leather jackets and helmets as well as magnifying eye pieces and special weapons.

Lara Nance takes the reader on an adventure across her imaginary world as our heroine Arabella Trunkett searches in vain for the people who kidnapped her father.  Along the way, Arabella and her ‘small family’ must fend off air-pirates, poison darts, human slave traders and assassins hoping to recover a mysterious ‘pin’ –one that Arabella now has in her possession and of course-stop the destruction of the world. Then to complicate matters, when the first air-ship encounters difficulies, Arabella must swallow her pride and accept the offer from the last man she ever wanted to see .

There is a building romance between Arabella and her one time beau Rett-but Araballa and Rett’s past is not easily forgotten especially by Arabella herself.  It has been eight long years since the last time Arabella last saw Rett and by the end of the first storyline, there is a possibility she may never see him alive again.

Lara Nance writes an interesting storyline where the world building is filled with fantastic discoveries and descriptive narrations-you can see many similarities to the ‘real world’ and where Lara gets her inspiration. And there is also something eerily similar to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones sagas in the writing style and story telling.  The central characters are heart warming and real, and even Rett’s past mistake can be forgiven under the right circumstances.  If you like a storyline with adventures around the globe, set in a fantasy-land style world, Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles is the perfect read.

Lara Nance-Draculaville BLOG TOUR and GIVEAWAY

Draculavillecollage

Why do we love Dracula?

I have to admit, when I was young and watched Dracula movies, I always pulled for him. I wanted him to escape with his female victim and beat the good guys.

Strange?

Maybe so, but I’m not the only person fascinated with the vampire legend. It’s been going on for years, and will likely continue. People keep saying vampires are old news, but personally, I don’t see the loss of interest just yet.

So, what is it that makes us love this monster? These are my opinions, but they make sense to me.

First, of all the monsters we’ve built over the years, he’s the best looking as a monster. No one wants a date with Frankenstein or the Mummy. And the Werewolf is only hot when he’s in his human form. Creature from the Black Lagoon? Damp and Yech. But Drac is dark and mysterious and ahem, rich. Definitely the best bachelor of the lot.

Second, he has something to offer his female victim. That bite on the neck is supposed to be the next best thing to orgasm. Then there’s the whole turning into a vampire and living forever with your lover thing, too. Hey, it’s gotta be cool being able to fly and crawl on the ceiling, not to mention commanding some of the darker creatures of the night to do your bidding. All the other monsters just want to kill you…

Third, Clothes. Yep, Drac’s wardrobe rocks. A tuxedo with a black cape? Almost as good as a military uniform to attract the fairer sex.

Fourth, He the tortured male we all want to save by our love. We don’t want to be the female he kills just for a snack. We want to be the one he bites so we can live with him forever, because he loves us so much.

So, those are my theories. What do you guys think? Why do you love Dracula?

I hope you’ll also check out my latest release, DraculaVille – New York, for a new twist on the vampire story. It’s available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble in both E-book and print. And stop by my website to let me know how you liked it! www.laranance.com

DRACULAVILLE by Lara Nance

DraculaVille

Super Ad/Publicity Agent, Talia Quinton, is poised at the top of her career to receive a much coveted job representing the world’s largest advertiser. She’s shocked and humiliated when the account is given to a rival agent with much less experience. Instead, Talia is ordered to come up with a publicity plan to bring tourists to Romania. An account not worth a tenth of the one she’d hoped for.

But she’s not called Talia the Tiger by the New York ad world for nothing. When she discovers a newly made and abandoned vampire named Drake, she takes on the job of healing and grooming him into the face of her new campaign.

Instead of touting the ancient country’s rolling hills and historic castles, she turns the advertising world on its head by bringing Romania’s dark past to the center of the presentation. She proposes they build a fantasy themed amusement park/resort for adults called, DraculaVille, right in the heart of Transylvania. And Drake will pose as Dracula, their spokesperson. A vampire pretending to be an actor, pretending to be a vampire.

Talia’s disturbing attraction to Drake is only one obstacle in her path. She soon discovers New York fairly swarms with warring vampire communities and she and Drake have landed right in the middle of their biggest conflict. On top of that, the odd members of the Romanian National Publicity Committee begin making strange demands that keep Talia constantly on the edge of losing the account and her reputation as New York’s most formidable Account Executive.

As a last straw, Talia and Drake are kidnapped by a ruthless vampire gang and forced to fight for their lives as the clock ticks on completing the assignment necessary to retain the DraculaVille account. Their only hope of gaining freedom is to consent to an ancient vampire bonding ceremony. There’s one problem. To complete the ceremony, Drake must kill Talia and turn her into a vampire. But despite her unavoidable attraction to the hunky vampire she saved, Talia’s not ready to die

Draculaville by Lara Nance – a Review

Draculaville by Lara Nance – a Review

DraculaVille

Perspective.  When life kicks you, refuses you your golden opportunity to shine (because your glow would mirror that of a beacon!), the alternative…the “road less traveled”, could be more fulfilling than you ever dreamed.  Lara Nance shares just such perspective in DraculaVille.  Talia “the Tiger” rises to the occasion and begrudgingly accepts the less than glamorous Romania ad campaign project.  She might become the laughing stock of her industry, but after passing out in an alley, post-drunken pity party of one with a broken Louboutin heel and vomit stains on her “victory” jacket, bottom looks bad.  Nowhere to go, but up, right?

How about we start with her down and out partner (with amber eyes that squint in the light) sharing the gutter alongside her?  How did she sink so low?!  And yiiikes…is that blood on his white shirt?  No matter.

She couldn’t explain the strange sense of camaraderie she felt for this stranger who’d shared her garbage humiliation.  Even here in the car, she experienced the undeniable tug to be next to him, to protect him.  She could also catch a hint of his pain and weakness.  What sort of strange connection ran between them?

Turns out, Drake Edwards had just been turned into a vampire!  Perspective?  And then some, but more importantly:  INSPIRATION!  Talia literally takes the show on the road.  Research into Romania tells her the vampire myth isn’t being “utilized” (polite term for exploited) as in North America.  Wait till they get a load of Dracula!

I know what you’re thinking:  Cheesy.  How is that remotely possible?  Of course tourism is steady for the macabre history in that region.  The discussions and conclusions leading up to labeling Drake a vampire were so matter of fact, if not handled/written well, it would have been preposterous, if not laughable.  Kudos to Ms. Nance for making the characters come to life with interesting plots and delivered with worthy dialogue.  I couldn’t get enough!

A supporting cast of characters added thoughtfulness and a conscience; something Talia lacked when tackling the project with such ferocity (hence the nickname).  When Talia began to treat Drake like a “job” and not a person who was struggling to recall the events that led up to his transformation (he did have a life, Talia!), her assistant, Felix and BFF, Gerri, supplied her with reality and kept her in line.

On a respite from learning about himself from Google, Drake agrees to the demands of the ad campaign and visits a bar to begin/gain exposure of Talia’s promotion.  Dressed to impress in all black — you know my vampires!!!  Swoon-worthy for sure.  Lo and behold…could it be?  Yes, of course:  Another vampire!  Drake is hurled into the middle of territorial vampire politics and he has to decide which faction to support — sooner than later.

The build-up of the romance was slow, but steady.  I was ready waaaay before Talia, but that won’t surprise anyone.  Talia had to move past her own walls to recognize Drake as a man and not simply a product.  Even though Talia was promoting his role of Dracula, she belittled his lack of knowledge and even hindered his vampire instincts.  When Drake took in a young vampire named Pip (a recovering pick-pocket, tee hee!) and insisted he could help guide him, Talia undermined his efforts:

“I’ll teach him.”  Drake met her gaze squarely.

She stepped closer.  “And who’s going to teach him about being a vampire?  You?  You’re like a child yourself in that matter”

Ouch (I literally wrote that in my Kindle notes).  I was also quite puzzled by the absence of Drake’s “maker”.  The issue is mentioned by the Matron of a vampire flock trying to recruit Drake; that leaving a new vampire to die went against old laws, but the reveal was never made.

Talia and Drake shared three extremely pleasurable kisses (cannot wait to reach THE moment!), professed feelings and discovered the meaning behind their pull to each other:  Armantor.    When I was reaching the conclusion of the book, and Drake and Talia still hadn’t made love, I was near desperate – there BETTER be a sequel or I was going to write a strongly-worded email.  Much to my utter relief, there is in fact not only a sequel, but it’s a trilogy!

Consider me a huge fan of Lara Nance!  I cannot wait to read the rest of this series and delve further into an interrupted love story that is begging to be consummated!  Everyone’s thinking it; I’m just saying it out loud.  All it takes is this one book and you’ll be reading alongside me for the duration…I promise! 😉

Keeper of the Night (The Keepers:LA #1) by Heather Graham

KEEPER OF THE NIGHT (The Keepers: LA #1) by Heather Graham-a review

Keeper of the Night

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released December 2012

In their new Keeper roles, these extraordinary women must balance the fate of the world with their desires…

New Keeper Rhiannon Gryffald has her peacekeeping duties cut out for her—because in Hollywood, it’s hard to tell the actors from the werewolves, bloodsuckers and shape-shifters. Then Rhiannon hears about a string of murders that bear all the hallmarks of a vampire serial killer, and she must confront her greatest challenge yet. Together with Elven detective Brodie McKay, they head to Laurel Canyon, epicenter of the danger, where they uncover a plot that may forever alter the face of human-paranormal relations

REVIEW:

Heather Graham, Alexandra Sokoloff, and Deborah Leblanc had previously written a trio of books known as The Keeper Trilogy (The Keeper, The Shifters, The Wolven). KEEPER OF THE NIGHT (The Keepers: LA #1) is the first storyline, written by Heather Graham, in their new spinoff trilogy focusing on the daughters (all cousins) of the original Keepers who have been called to take their seats at the Council of the Others. Although this particular series is a spin-off, the first storyline can be read as a stand-alone without too much trouble. But there is a caveat at the end of my review.

The Keepers are in essence –the Law- they reside over the different paranormal and supernatural species-Elven, Vampire, Wolven, Shifter etc. known as the ‘Others’. Keepers are born and it is their destiny to oversee and enforce the law. Keeper of the Night focuses on Vampire Keeper Rhiannon Gryffald and Elven detective Brodie McKay. Although the Keepers are NOT vampire, wolven etc they do bare some of the powers and abilities of their brethren.

Keeper of the Night finds new Keeper Rhiannon Gryffald as she embarks on her first official investigation that places her into a world of rotting corpses, hidden secrets and an ensemble of actors who want nothing more than to make it big in Hollywood. But when the dead and missing are somehow connected to the local theatre group, Rhiannon finds herself with an unlikely partner-Elven Detective Brodie McKay. But Brodie is undercover as a member of the acting community and to keep his guise a secret, Rhiannon and Brodie must act like a couple to keep the cast from discovering Brodie’s true identity. But play acting as lovers soon leads to the real thing and it will be Brodie who finds himself guardian and protector of the Keeper of the Night.

Keeper of the Night is difficult to rate. Although I said that this storyline could be read as a stand-alone, some background information regarding Keepers and their destiny would have been helpful-to start a new series, especially a spin-off where there are already established characters and storylines, a little background would have been appreciated. I kept thinking-What IS a Keeper? How did they come to be? What is the history between Keepers and the Others? I had to search for some information online-other reviews from the previous series etc.  I am a big fan of authors who include the pertinent background information in each successive storyline. It keeps the series and premise coherent. I hope the next author will think to include some of the Keeper history.

There is a prequel novella available for FREE from Amazon: The Gatekeeper. I had hope that the Gatekeeper would have revealed more background information but it was only an introduction to this particular series and the main characters are not involved in Keeper of the Night-in fact they have nothing to do with the first novel at all.

Overall, this storyline was okay. It will not top my list of re-reads and I will probably not read it again. I was disappointed. Even the relationship and romance between Rhiannon and Brodie seemed forced. I did not feel the chemistry or even the tension between the couple and it was about 2/3 of the way through before any one on one time was had. And in that, I did not feel the connection to the couple or the story.

An Interview with Bella Andre

An Interview with Bella Andre

2_bellaandre_inthesullivanssanfrancisco

The Reading Cafe is happy to have the wonderful Bella Andre as our guest today.

Bella recently her 7th book in her simply wonderful Sullivan Series.  Our review of Come a Little Closer posted yesterday.

Let’s meet Bella.

Hi Bella and welcome to The Reading Café.  We would like to start with some background information.

TRC: Please tell us something about yourself?

Bella: I’m married to an amazing man. We have two children and our family splits our time between Northern California, where The Sullivan series is set, and the Adirondack Mountains of New York.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Bella: Yes! Before I wrote books, I wrote songs. I even toured and open for Jewel and Santana. I love telling stories

TRC: What challenges have you faced getting your novels published?  Especially with you being one of the top digital authors, and have made a great success in self publishing?

Bella: I wrote for 3 New York publishers for eight years, and then when my next books weren’t picked up for publication a friend suggested that I try self-publishing. Consider that my readers were emailing me daily asking for a sequel to TAKE ME, my first full-length novel (which was released by Simon & Schuster), I decided to write LOVE ME for my fans and release it digitally. I spent a week writing a personal email to every reader who had contacted me for five years and their response to the story I’d written for them astounded me! That was when I decided to throw myself wholeheartedly into self-publishing. And I’ve loved every second of it!

TRC: You have recently signed an agreement with Harlequin Mira for the print rights of the Sullivan series.  This is wonderful news for you, and congratulations are in order.  Will this change anything in your plans for future books or series?

Bella: Thank you! I’ve reached over a million new readers with my e-books and now that the first 8 Sullivan books will be put into print between June 2013 and April 2014, I can’t wait for new readers to discover my Sullivans. The sale of my print rights won’t change my future plans for The Sullivans: Lori’s story will be out in ebook Summer 2013 (the paperback will be coming April 2014), followed by her cousin Rafe from Seattle in ebook Summer 2013. I am planning to tell all 5 of the Sullivan cousin’s stories….and I have something very special in mind for Mary Sullivan (the matriarch) winter 2013.

TRC: The Sullivan seriesis Contemporary romance, and has become immensely popular. Can you please tell us, for those who may not know the premise of this series?  How did you come up with the idea of this series?

Bella: The Sullivan family is a large, close-knit Northern California family of siblings (Six brothers and their two twin sisters) who find love one by one. I’ve been so amazed by how readers have responded to my Sullivans! I absolutely love sitting down to write every single day. There’s lots of laughing and sniffling over my keyboard as I write…just ask my husband and he’ll tell you what he sees when he walks past my home office.

I’ve always loved reading about big families like Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons and Stephanie Lauren’s Cynsters. It was a natural fit for me to bring that big family dynamic into a contemporary setting…and to make the stories both super-sexy and emotional.

Come a Little Bit CloserTRC: Come a Little Bit Closer is your latest release in your Sullivans series.  Can you please give us a brief description of the story?

Bella: In COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER, movie star Smith Sullivan can’t afford any distractions. He’s staking his entire reputation on his new film…but he can’t stop thinking about Valentina Landon and the fire he sees smoldering just beneath the surface.

Valentina isn’t averse to sensual pleasure, or even to the idea of finding true love, but as a Hollywood business manager she’s watched too many smart women fall for actors…only to be torn apart when the fairytale comes to its inevitable end.

But when intense weeks together on set turn their heated attraction into red-hot flames of passion, Smith knows he has to find a way to convince Valentina to let him get a little bit closer. Close enough to completely steal her heart…the way she’s stolen his from the start.

always on my mind

TRC: Always on my Mind, is book 8 of the Sullivans series, will be released on March 5th..  What can you tell us about it?

Bella: Always on My Mind belongs to Lori, the “naughty” Sullivan twin. I can’t give too much away about her story….but I can tell you that her hero just might be the hottest I’ve every written. I can’t wait for everyone to read her story! It’s been a long time in coming for her.

Always On My Mind Preorder Link: Amazon

TRC: You have written erotic romance for Ellora’s Cave. Do you have a preference between writing Erotic or Contemporary romance novels?

Bella:  I love writing love stories, period. While I don’t write erotic novels anymore, my books will always be super-sexy because I think lovemaking is such a huge part of falling in love and the growing connection between my heroes and heroines.

TRC: What are you working on now? Do you have any plans for a new series?

Bella: This spring I will begin writing about the 5 Seattle Sullivans that my readers have met in the past couple of books, and they have their own adventures brewing. I also have a brand new idea for a group of AMAZING heroes that I’m hoping to start writing soon…but mum’s the word on that for now.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information between each other and their family and spouses.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Bella: I have an amazing group of talented writing friends who help me brainstorm, and my husband is also a great help when I need to brainstorm a scene or character

TRC: Can you please tell us your writing process?  Do you have a favorite spot or specific time to write?

Bella: I write anywhere, everywhere, any time that I can. All I need is my MacBook Air. When I’m on “lockdown” mode on a book, I write 5-8 hours a day until I’m finished with the draft. At that point I revise and rewrite like crazy for several weeks until I’m happy with the book.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Bella: Thank you so much for having me! I’d love to hear from readers – you can find me at http://www.BellaAndre.com, at http://www.twitter.com/bellaandre, and http://www.facebook.com/bellaandrebooks.

An Uncommon Education by Elizabeth Percer-Review, Guest Post and Giveaway

AN UNCOMMON EDUCATION by Elizabeth Percer-a REVIEW and GUEST POST

An Uncommon Education - Elizabeth Percer

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released January 8, 2013

For fans of “Prep,” “Dead Poets Society,” and “Special Topics in Calamity Physics “comes an elegant and remarkably insightful coming-of-age debut, in which a young woman’s serendipitous discovery of her college’s underground Shakespeare Society leads to an unforgettable series of transformations. When Naomi finds herself among “the Shakes” at Wellesley, she finally lets herself embrace the passionate inner self she’s always kept locked away. But when a sudden scandal unfolds, she will be forced to learn the limits of the relationships that have sustained her. An intimate and enthralling narrative, Elizabeth Percer’s debut novel An Uncommon Education marks the emergence of a stunning new literary talent.

*******************

REVIEW: An Uncommon Education is a storyline about a young woman-Naomi Feinstein- and her struggles to find herself. The storyline is centered in and around the Boston area where the brilliant and eccentric Naomi discovers she has a special ability that both hinders and furthers her eccentricities.

As a child –adored by her father, ignored by her mother, and rejected by the kids at school, Naomi must become self-sufficient and relies on her own abilities to absorb everything from the world around her. Making friends was beyond difficult and when she finally finds the one friend who can make everything right, he is ripped from her life in more ways than one.

The author takes us on a roller coaster ride through Naomi’s childhood, teen years and eventually delves into her struggles to fit into an institution where she never quite fit the mold-Wellesley College. At times the storyline dragged, especially in the early years, but much of what made Naomi the woman she became was built upon the foundation laid out in the early part of the story. As a young girl, raised by a Jewish father and a converted from Catholic mother, Naomi’s early years are a study in psychology-with her mothers’ questionable parenting and emotional health as well as her father’s never ending love, Naomi reaches out to the only person she knows and in doing so, will eventually lose the person she was trying to become.

We are witness to Naomi’s struggles and internal battles as she wages war with herself-never quite sure enough whether to take the next step and in some cases screwing up along the way. At one point, Naomi is a young girl in love with the boy next door, but the reality of the situation is a hard lesson learned in bigotry and religious prejudice-and in the long run, probably the best case scenario for Naomi.

Naomi Feinstein is a young woman who struggles with the realities of the world. We watch as the family dynamics affects a young girl to the point she becomes the parent to a mother who is battling demons of her own. There are heartbreaking moments of lost love, death and memories that can no longer be recovered. Her struggles through college are not unlike those of many others, but we are witness to an unhappy time in her life that would have been better spent elsewhere or in other pursuits. Naomi never quite fits in. She is a young woman lost and yet she is trying to save the people that she loves.

AN UNCOMMON EDUCATION is a coming of age story, told from the heroine’s POV, that some people will have a difficult time enjoying but it was a storyline that I found a different change of pace to the usual paranormal romance and erotic tales. I am not sure how to classify the genre:  maybe coming of age: new adult: it is not quite historical or contemporary: or maybe it can be called- fiction.  The storyline bounces back and forth between present and past, as well as skipping ahead several years at a time. But to cover close to 20 odd years in the life of Naomi Feinstein, would have taken longer to write than for the heroine to discover what it was she truly wanted in life.

Elizabeth Percer-GUEST POST by the author of AN UNCOMMON EDUCATION

Elizabeth Percer

I think one reason why the author’s writing process is a source of such endless curiosity is because it seems like a perfectly reasonable way to understand how books get written. People are understandably hoping there might be a way to operationalize the writer’s work, as if knowing how and when and with what a writer goes about her business can be boiled down into a series of easily reproducible steps. For most of my life, I was one of those people. In fact, I went so far as to spend six years in graduate school trying to study that very thing. And do you know what? I never figured it out – and in realizing that I would never figure it out, I think I finally became a writer.

Now before you get your knickers in a twist, I don’t mean to say that an understanding of writing must be left to the muses, unfathomable to us lowly mortals. In fact, the whole reason why I wanted to break the writing process down into manageable steps is because I thought it was irresponsible of writers to speak of things like muses and creative gifts and innate talent – to essentially implied that good writing was not something we could go after, but must be worthy enough to receive. Whenever I, as a younger writer, heard this kind of talk, I only felt more lost, more at sea, more powerless, really. And I’ve had enough of artists feeling powerless in this society. I think it’s time we changed our public image from wild-haired, tortured slaves of creativity into the far humbler, gloriously average creatures that we are.

I now realize, however, that the way to do this does not lie in dismantling the writer’s process into simplified steps; that writing can be as straightforward an act as following a recipe or putting an engine together. That’s the (sort of) bad news. The good news is that we don’t need to give our power away to the muses just because we don’t completely understand how writing works. The trick lies in relinquishing an idea that we have to understand the writing process in order to engage in it. I don’t believe we do. And here’s why:

Writing is a means of engaging with the world and our impressions of it. Just as we make friends not through formulas or systems, we must approach writing as a relationship with our own minds, one that requires dedication, faith, and good-heartedness to even get off the ground. It will, necessarily, also involve a certain amount of disappointment, misunderstanding, and emotional stubbed toes. A writer’s very last step is to actually write something down – most of what we do is feel around clumsily in the unknown until we touch on something that rings true – and this takes a lot of perseverance and an endless willingness to keep weeding our own gardens. In this way, being a writer does involve a certain amount of very simple, reproducible behavior — like showing up and concentrating and breaking larger goals into daily and manageable tasks — but without the willingness to engage with those murkier parts of our brain that are speaking to us like Frankenstein after an evening at the pub, these smaller details will be meaningless.

I think this is why writers are so squeamish about discussing process, because we know that writing cannot be broken down into procedures, that in a way it’s a far simpler and boring process of paying attention and taking notes, many of which never turn into anything anyone would want to read. Writing is learning more than telling; seeking more than finding; and having faith that putting our best unfinished selves out there will result in something far more meaningful than trying to explain ourselves.
