It’s wonderful to be back at The Reading Café today. Thanks so much for having me.

Today is Release Day for X Marks the Scot, and I’m so happy to be here to share it with you. The second book in the Bad Boys of the Highlands series starts off where Temptation in a Kilt left off. Declan MacGregor is charged with escorting the bloody Campbell’s sister to the English court. And he’s not happy.

Declan was so much fun to write, especially since he’s the biggest bad boy of the series. His character was loosely based on Ian Somerhalder’s character on The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore. Although Declan sometimes takes it a bit more over-the-top than Mr. Salvatore, deep down, the man has a big heart and I’ll think readers will recognize that, too.

On the other hand, Lady Liadain Campbell has had enough of men and their games. When she’s thrown together with the infamous MacGregor rogue, sparks fly, tempers flare and attraction is hard to resist, even though she tries.

X Marks the Scot Blurb:

He was a Highland Rogue—Wicked with a Bow and Arrow and Just as Wicked with the Ladies.

Declan MacGregor hadn’t a care in the world beyond finding a soft bed and a willing woman…until he had to escort Lady Liadain Campbell to the English court. The woman needles him at every turn, but he can’t just abandon her to that vipers’ nest without protection.

She Never Asked for a Bodyguard…

Liadain wasn’t thrilled to be left in the care of her clan’s archrival. It was as if the man never had a lady tell him no before! And yet as whispers of treason swirl through the court and the threat of danger grows even sharper, her bitter enemy soon becomes the only one she can trust…

Excerpt:

“Get up, ye whoreson.”

Praying he was still in an ale-induced state and only dreaming, Declan MacGregor of Glenorchy slowly opened his eyes as he felt the prick of cold steel against his throat. A man with graying hair at his temples stood a hairbreadth away from the bed, dagger in hand.

A muscle ticked in the man’s jaw. “Get up,” he said through clenched teeth.

The blonde in the bed next to Declan—what was her name?—gasped and tugged up the blanket to cover her exposed breasts. Her eyes widened in fear.

“Ye defiled my daughter,” the stranger growled.

Declan raised his hands in mock surrender. “I assure ye that I didnae.” He stole a sideways glance at the woman and silently pleaded for his latest conquest to come to his aid.

“Papa?” The fair-skinned beauty sat up on the bed. “What are ye doing here?”

Glancing at his daughter, the man spoke in clipped tones. “This whoreson had ye and will wed ye.”

“Now just a bloody minute. I…”

Whipping his head back around, the enraged father glared at Declan, repositioning the dagger—much lower. Feeling the contact of the blade, Declan took a sharp intake of breath while the woman sprang from the bed as though it was afire. Hastily, she grabbed her clothing and started to don her attire.

He silently chuckled, realizing the irony of the moment. What would Ciaran think? Declan had chosen to remain at court to escape his older brother’s scrutiny, now only to be thrown deeper into hot water. In fact, it was scalding.

The fair-colored lass rolled her eyes at her father. “Really, Papa, ye must cease your attempts at matchmaking. I donna wish to wed him.”

She pulled on her father’s dagger-held hand, thankfully removing the blade from the most favorite part of Declan’s anatomy. He breathed a sigh of relief when he reached down and felt that his most prized possession was still intact.

What the hell had he gotten himself into? The gods knew he had needs, but if he wasn’t more selective of the women he bedded, the fairer sex would surely be the death of him.

He needed to escape.

Declan threw back the blankets, stood, and quickly tossed his trews into the air with his foot. While father and daughter were huddled in deep conversation, he donned his trews, pulled on his tunic, grabbed his boots, and simply walked out—unnoticed and unscathed.

The Cat’s Meow BLOG TOUR and GIVEAWAY with Stacey Kennedy

THE CAT’S MEOW Blog Tour with Stacey Kennedy

The Cats Meow Button-

THE CAT’S MEOW (Witches Brew #1) by Stacey Kennedy-a review

TheCatsMeow

ABOUT THE BOOK:  (Released December 2012) Libby is an Enchantress—a witch gifted by the Goddess to conjure spells. When a magical presence is detected around a recent string of feline slayings, Libby takes the case to uncover the reasons behind the odd deaths. Much to her displeasure, the coven also sends a sexy warlock, Kale, to assist her.

While having the muscle around proves to be useful, fighting the attraction between them is worse than a hex, especially considering Kale is keeping secrets. But soon, Libby has bigger problems than the elusive warlock when her spells turn up clues that point to something far more sinister than slaughtered cats.

Now Libby has landed herself in the midst of an uprising. She trusts no one and isn’t safe—not from the warlocks stirring up trouble. Not from the worrisome rebellion she can’t escape. And certainly not from Kale, who is weaving a very dangerous spell over her heart

**********************

REVIEW: The Cat’s Meow is my first Stacey Kennedy novel and not knowing what to expect was a little disconcerting. Although going into a storyline blind, as in not knowing anything about the author or the series, I had nothing with which to compare so I had to do a little research.

Stacey Kennedy takes the reader on roller coaster ride that sees Libby, a witch and an Enchantress, following the orders of her Coven as she must uncover the strange happenings involving dark magic, dead cats and a mysterious warlock who is keeping secret the real reason he has been sent to look after and guard the young witch. But it is Kale’s presence in Libby’s life that forces her to look at the bigger picture-not all is at it seems-there are secrets she is determined to uncover; warlocks with hidden agendas; feelings of betrayal; and someone from her past who is willing to sacrifice everyone she holds close. There is a cast of colorful secondary characters that have the potential to add something to future storylines-but there was little in the way of development in the first book.

Kale is a warlock but the more involved in Libby’s case Kale becomes, the more his true identity slowly unravels. And Kale is under orders not to reveal the whole truth to the woman with whom he is falling in love. This particular part of the premise fueled much of the storyline. As Libby worked to uncover a plot that would see demons, witches and warlocks at war, Kale was an ever-present question on her mind-why was he there and who sent him?

Kale and Libby’s relationship was tenuous at best. The sexual chemistry was almost nil and I did not feel the connection between Libby and Kale. Whether Libby was oblivious to Kale’s attraction or her refusal to accept anything beyond the obvious; or the fact that she was a single-minded heroine with enough attitude to spare-Kale’s refusal to reveal the truth amped up the heroine’s anxiety and in doing so forced an invisible wall between the couple that caught me in the middle. At one point I was rooting for Libby-understanding why she was confused and felt betrayed-then I was rooting for Kale-knowing that he had no choice but to conceal his identity from Libby-although everyone else in the storyline knew the truth-which did not make any sense. THE CAT’S MEOW is labeled under the Urban Fantasy genre but I would place the storyline in the combination of UF and fantasy.

Overall, I enjoyed THE CAT’S MEOW even though I did not feel the connection between Libby and Kale. Hopefully Stacey can bring this couple together in such a way that I feel their wants and desires.

Stacey Kennedy-INTERVIEW with the author

TRC:  Hi Stacey. Welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of THE CAT’S MEOW.

Stacey:  *waves* I’m so excited to be here!

TRC:  We have a few ‘TOP TEN’ questions but first we would like to meet the author behind THE CAT’S MEOW.

For everyone who does not know STACEY KENNEDY would you please tell us something about yourself?

Stacey:  A little about me…well, I’m Canadian, and from Ontario. I’m married with two little monsters who keep me ridiculously busy! Most times, I’m very boring. But I love to party. If you get me out on the dance floor, I tend to make it fun! Add in a couple of drinks and I’m really fun!

TRC:  OK…on with our TOP TEN lightning round:

1. Favorite Dessert
Anything chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s cake, ice cream, or a regular chocolate bar—just has to be chocolate. We get along very well!

2. Favorite Food
Chicken stuffed with goat cheese and herbs! YUM!

3. Favorite TV Show
Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Games of Thrones, Supernatural, and The Walking Dead – I can’t pick just one! ;-D

4. Dark or Milk Chocolate

5. Favorite Fast Food
A&W

6. Favorite Childhood Memory
Going to Disneyland. I can’t wait to go with my kids.

7. Best Gift you have ever received
On my one-year anniversary, my hubby gave me a pretty glass container that had sand in it. Of course, I was entirely confused. Then he told me he collected sand from the beach where we stayed at for our honeymoon. Yep, I totally melted!

8. Best compliment you have ever received
“Your book kept me up all night. I couldn’t put it down!” – that’s a pretty incredible compliment for an author to receive.

9. Favorite Song
Run by Leona Lewis.

10.Favorite Pastime
Horseback riding. I spent pretty much my whole life horseback riding. I loved it, but with two little kids, I don’t have time for it right now. I will definitely get back into it once they are older. I love those relaxing trail rides.

TRC:  Thank you Stacey for answering our TOP TEN Lightening round questions. We wish you all the best and look forward to your next release.

Stacey:  Thanks for having me! It’s been fun!

Facebook or Twitter

Stacey Kennedy’s novels are lighthearted fantasy with heart-squeezing, thigh-clenching romance, and even give a good chuckle every now and again. But within the stories you’ll also find fast-paced action, life-threatening moments, and a big bad villain who needs to be destroyed. She lives in Southwestern Ontario with her husband and two children. If she’s not plugging away at a new story—which is rare because her muse is annoying—you’ll find her camping, curling up with the latest flick, or obsessing over Sons of Anarchy, Games of Thrones, Supernatural and Dexter.

Alma Katsu-Guest Post and Giveaway

Alma Katsu-Guest Post and Giveaway

The Taker Collage
What’s the story behind The Taker Trilogy? It’s a story about the terrible power of love, and about the struggle between good and evil that goes on inside each person. It combines elements of historical, paranormal, fantasy and romance to create an original story of love, magic, danger and redemption.

Blurb:

The Taker opens on the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, where Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.

Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a settlement in the wilderness. Consumed as a child by her love for Jonathan, son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But when Jonathan fails her in her time of need and she’s exiled from town, Lanny is taken in by a man with mysterious, otherworldly powers named Adair. He uses his powers to give her eternal life, but Lanore learns too late that there is a price for this gift: to spend eternity with him. And though he is handsome and charming, behind Adair’s seductive facade is the stuff of nightmares. He is a monster in the flesh, and he wants Lanore to love him for all of time. And all she wants is Jonathan. She steals Adair’s magic to bind Jonathan to her so they can spend eternity together, learning too late that she’s doomed them both to a terrible fate for all eternity. It’s up to Lanny to figure out how to stop Adair and save them both—though she seems condemned to pay for her betrayal of Jonathan for the rest of her life.

In the second book in the trilogy, The Reckoning, Lanny believes she’s finally free of both Adair and her hopeless love for Jonathan. She’s trying to atone for her sins by giving away the treasures she’s collected over her many lifetimes in order, purging her past and clearing the way for a future with her new lover, Luke Findley. But, while viewing these items at an exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Lanore suddenly is aware that the thing she’s been dreading for two hundred years has caught up to her: Adair has escaped from his prison. He’s free— and he will come looking for her. And she has no idea how she will save herself a second time from a man who is truly unstoppable.

With the stunningly imaginative storytelling and rich characterizations that fascinated readers worldwide and made The Taker a singular and memorable literary debut and an international sensation, Alma Katsu once again delivers “a powerful evocation of the dark side of romantic love” (Publishers Weekly) in her breathtaking new novel.

THE RECKONING is a nominee for RT Book Reviews 2012 Reviewers Choice Award for Best Paranormal Romance and was a semifinalist in Goodreads 2012 Readers Choice Award for Best Paranormal Fantasy.

Q&A:
What’s been the most rewarding part of writing THE TAKER books?

For me, the most fun has been the freedom to write a series that is not locked into an established mythos. I wanted to create the kind of book that I love to read: dark, twisty tales filled with characters you can’t forget and a story that haunts you for days after you’ve finished the last page. It has magic—because deep down, everyone wants to believe in magic—and danger, and men you want to fall in love with but who are tragically flawed. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of The Taker books has also been the biggest challenge: the fact that it’s doesn’t fit neatly into one genre or another sometimes makes it tough to convince readers to give it a try. I hope I don’t sound immodest if I repeat what countless readers have told me: “Why did I wait so long to read this book? It was amazing.”

With your background in intelligence and the spy business, how did you end up writing fantasy?

You’d think that with 30 years in the intelligence business, writing spy novels would be a no-brainer. Maybe that means I don’t have a brain . . . But really, the truth is that the last thing I wanted to do after a long day at work was come home and wrestle with an espionage caper. It was simultaneously both too much like work and crazily unlike work: what you see in a James Bond movie or in the pages of a spy thriller is not like real intelligence work, but you probably guessed that already. Whereas with fantasy, you have carte blanche to escape from reality, to mark everything larger-than-life in order to reveal truths about life. I felt constrained trying to write spy fiction, whereas I feel totally free writing fantasy.

What’s been the most surprising part of being published?

Connecting with readers and other writers. It is mind-blowing to see the range of books being written these days. There are books for every taste, and there are an amazing number of readers who read widely and can turn you on to a new author or new favorite book you might otherwise have never heard of. And without fail, the authors I’ve met have been friendly, open, and so supportive, ready to share their experience or even lend a shoulder for you to cry on. Everyone is in it for the love of story. It’s a pretty wonderful community to be part of.

READ AN EXCERPT:

Excerpt from
THE RECKONING
By Alma Katsu
Book Two in The Taker Trilogy

The Reckoning

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository /

By the summer of 1830, Jonathan and I had ended up in Fez, taking a suite at a hotel frequented by Europeans and Americans doing what was known at the time as the Grand Tour, the trip taken by young adults from moneyed families to give them some knowledge of the world. The hotel was fancy enough to please wealthy clients but practical enough to maintain a row of rooms and suites along the back of the property for another class of travelers. These rooms were meant for the lost and the drifters, and that was where we found ourselves after wandering for seven years, little wiser and much poorer, still ill prepared for what lay ahead for us.

It was here that I awoke in a double bed with sheets that hadn’t been changed in a week (we scrimped on maid service to save money) to find Jonathan’s note telling me he’d gone. Forgive me. This is for the best. Promise me you won’t come looking for me. If I change my mind, I will find you. Please honor my wish. Your dearest, J. I reread the note twenty, thirty times, the words making less sense with each reading, and remained in bed for another hour, uncomprehending. He’s mad at me for something, I told myself. He’s upset over something I said or did, something I don’t even remember, and has stormed out. He’ll be back. If I wait here patiently, he’ll be back.

When I finally got to my feet, I found that his clothing was gone, along with his suitcase and the journal he’d gotten into the habit of keeping. He hadn’t taken any of our money and could have no cash but whatever small amount he had on him. He’d also left behind the small pistol he carried, a sign that I was now responsible for my own protection.

He’ll be back after sunset—that was the next thing I told myself, mostly in an attempt to remain calm. I sat in the shaded rooms, smoking cigarette after cigarette, wondering what had caused him to leave. Things had deteriorated between us, certainly, but every couple went through bad times, periods when they argued more and found less pleasure in each other’s company. Arguments, sullen evenings . . . these things would pass. Jonathan had no choice but to return to me. In our peculiar situation, there was no one else he could trust. I started to wonder if there wasn’t an outsider to blame, if perhaps Jonathan had been persuaded by one of the adventurers who trekked through Morocco seemingly on weekly basis—a strong-willed woman, one with a fortune and an independent streak—to join her on the road. Maybe my worse fear had come to pass and he had finally fallen in love with someone else.

Interview with Sam Bond-Bodybuilder and Cover Model

Interview with Sam Bond-Bodybuilder and Cover Model

sam bond

About Sam Bond: Click HERE to visit Sam’s website and learn all about Sam.

Born and raised in Dorset, UK, Sam Bond is a born and bred beach boy. Though, as much as he loved the sand between his toes, his thirst for knowledge to him the midlands in 2006 to complete a degree in Exercise Physiology at Coventry University.

Many of you will recognize Sam from his various cover images on some of our favorite novels and storylines. Let’s begin !

TRC: Hi Sam and welcome to The Reading Café. Your image has been exploding on several recent cover releases from various authors and storylines. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us about yourself?

Sam: Well that’s a pretty open ended question and I’m not even sure I can think of an interesting answer. What I will say is I’m a creature of habit. I pretty much work best when in a routine. Almost sounds a little sad right? Ha ha

TRC: You are all about the ‘extreme sports’. What first peaked your interest in extreme sport participation? Do you consider yourself an ‘adrenaline junkie’ as it pertains to extreme sports?

Sam-Bond-4

Sam: I’ve never really had much interest in conventional sports such as Rugby or Football. Give me an opportunity to get air born and hurt myself and I seem to function rather well. I guess I am an adrenaline junkie.

TRC: Your website says you have a degree in ‘Exercise Physiology’ from Coventry University. Would you please explain to us about ‘exercise physiology’ and how it applies to your love of extreme sports?

Sam: Well Exercise Physiology involves studying the body’s response to exercise. So it’s about learning what goes on in the muscles and then how to apply that to a sport to improve performance. It’s no more related to extreme sports than any other type of performance but it did help me understand why once or twice, when stuck with my head in snow at altitude did I have a quick bout of exercise induced asthma.

SamBond-Gladiator-Atlas

TRC: Would you please tell us about your role as one of the Sky One Gladiators-ATLAS?

Sam: Well this was an incredibly exciting chapter in my life. It’s pretty much over now and I have had some wonderful experiences; I consider myself very fortunate to have been involved with the show. I’m not doing anything in the media right now but I hope to do some more media work again soon.

TRC: How much daily training was involved in preparation for your role as ATLAS?

Sam: We trained for 3 weeks at the events before each series but this was mostly technique work rather than physically busting our asses. Between the first and second series I trained as a full time athlete; morning and night.

TRC: Your image has become quite popular on several romance cover novels and story lines. How were you first introduced to the world of cover modeling?

Sam Bond Covers

Sam: Yes I’ve seen how many times my image has been used. I’m amazed and entirely flattered. I needed some photos for my website but was strapped for cash. So I asked a friend to put me in touch with a chap who could help me out on a quid pro quo basis. He could use the images as he pleased and so could I. It was a complete shock to me that he had used the images quite frankly as I’ve never even considered myself a model.

Sam Bond Collage
TRC: There is a stigma in the cover model industry especially as it pertains to romance covers. The romance novel industry has dramatically increased in popularity over the past few years. Do you think the cover illustrations and ‘hero depictions’ have pushed the industry in such a way, that the reader’s imaginations can be fuelled by the representation on the cover?

Sam Bond 5Sam: I honestly have no knowledge or opinion on this. That sounds awfully dull doesn’t it? I don’t know much about the industry but what I’ve seen, I think is fine really. It all looks a lot of fun.

TRC: Nudity in the modeling industry can be very controversial. Photographs can range from sensual and sexual to bordering on pornographic. What advice would you give to young and up and coming models in the industry about nude photography?

Sam: Don’t get your bits out until you’re sure it’s what you want to do and you’re doing it in a safe environment.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Sam:
At least 3 more promotions

Buy a property

Proposal and marriage

More media work

Starting a family perhaps?

Sam Bond 6TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Sam: Too many people accuse me on using drugs. I’m completely drug free but I’ve given up trying to convince every Tom Dick and Harry. I only value the opinions of those close to me now.

TRC: If you could change something about yourself personal or professional, what would it be and why?

Sam: I wish I could grow a full beard. A really thick one. Yes it would require constant grooming but I need to shave regularly anyway so it may as well be a proper beard.

TRC: 😉

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

Sam: My mother has of course been a massive influence and nothing but a positive one. She’s very strong and generally a lot of fun to be around.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Sam: My biceps.

TRC: 😉

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food–Avocados

Favorite Dessert--
Mother’s apple crumble but hardly any crumble and loads of apple. I hate it when people get the proportions all wrong.

Favorite TV Show–Monty Python. Possible Friends though as the Monty Python series were nowhere near as good as the films were.

Last Movie You Saw
–Watching Pirates of the Caribean right now actually. I do like this film.

Favorite Musical Group–AC/DC – Oh yeah!

Dark or Milk Chocolate–Dark as I steer clear of dairy wherever I can

Dream Car–A Range Rover Over Finch of some description.

TRC: Thank you Sam for taking the time to answer our questions. We wish you all the best in your chosen career. And of course, we are looking forward to more covers with your image.
