Rhianna by Amanda L.V. Shalaby – a Review

Rhianna by Amanda L.V. Shalaby – a Review

roses2
Description:
Upon the unexpected death of her parents, Rhianna Braden finds the enigmatic Lord Guilford Kingsley on her doorstep. He escorts her to Kingsley Manor, where family secrets and scandals begin to unfold.

Her uncommon beauty captures the attention of the dashing Lord Thayne Brighton of Ravensleigh, but Rhianna is certain, despite their mutual attraction, that he would never choose her over his wealthy intended. Meanwhile, Lady Lydia Kingsley suspects her husband’s attention to Rhianna has led to an affair between them. Events turn deadly when the truth of their relationship is discovered.

Eventually, Rhianna is forced to make a life-altering decision – while discovering that some secrets are not meant to be kept.

Review;
Over this past year I’ve noticed my reading styles to be branching out and one area is into Historical romances.  I forgot how much I enjoyed them from my days in school when they were on our class syllabus.  Now thanks to TRC and other book sites I’ve discovered the joy of them all over again.  So when I was asked to review Rhianna, by Amanda L.V. Shalaby I jumped at the chance and was pleasantly swept away on a journey of mystery, intrigue, danger and romance.

Miss Shalaby does a wonderful job of grabbing the reader early and sweeping them along and into the story.  There were many times when I was reading Rhianna that my imagination would get away on me and make me feel like I was being transported back in time.  I could actually see in my minds eye the scenes that were being described on the pages.  From the long flowing gowns, to gardens of flowers and splendid sprawling hills and valleys.  I must say that Miss Shalaby has a talent for words and descriptions and does so in such a flowing and lyrical manner that you can’t help but get lost in the story she sets before you. As I read Rhianna I couldn’t help but think of such stories like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and Emma, just to name a few.

As I said we are brought along a journey filled with mystery, intrigue and danger. Miss Shallaby does an excellent job of weaving all these elements together to create a story that takes hold of the reader and keeps you turning page after page wanting more.  The mystery and suspense that surround Rhianna’s life is what spear heads all these well balanced elements.  Underneath all this mystery and intrigue is a slow building love story between Rhianna and Thayne Brighton.  I really enjoyed how Miss Shalaby took the time to slowly build their relaltionship and let the reader watch them fall in love. For me a slow to build love story is the best, as it allows me, the reader to better connect with each character first as individuals, then as a couple.  To me it adds layers to not only the characters, but to the storyline as well.  I really enjoyed Rhianna and Thayne as a couple and enjoyed watching them slowly fall into love. It was fun to see them try and deny their feelings at first, and then watch them slowly take that fall into love, and realize that what they have is the best thing to happened to both of them.  Thayne is a character you can’t help but fall in love with.  Watching him look after and protect Rhianna to point of accepting a duel to the death with one of the stories villians, was just, aaaaah swoon-worthy. (sorry Carmen, had to steal a page out of your book, as Thayne is a very swoon-worthy character) 😉  He definitely fits the hero mold for me.

Rhianna was a fun read, filled with all the elements that I enjoy in a good book. The characters and storyline were well developed, and weaved together so that it just flowed from page to page.  I was swept away on a beautiful and romantic journey. Through her brilliantly written descriptive language I couldn’t help but imagine myself as one of the characters. One of my favourite scenes she described was the Ball.  I’ve always loved those scenes in old movies, with the gowns, décor and music. I may not have been born in that era, but Miss Shalaby made me feel as though I was there, the Belle of the Ball as I read that scene.  When an author can do that, pull me into her story like that, I know I’m in for a good read. If you are a fan of historical romance, filled with mystery, intrigue, danger and romance, then I highly recommend this one for you.  Happy reading and until next time.

Christine Feehan: Definitely will NOT stop writing the dark series. It’s a world I really enjoy and will keep coming back to. This trilogy has been over a decade in the making and required a much larger story arc so you get three books! I’m absolutely thrilled that my publishing house agreed to put them out six months apart instead of the standard year. (that’s practically unheard of) I’ve been so excited about this but couldn’t say a word until they agreed!!! SURPRISE!

Forbidden Sister by V.C. Andrews-a review

FORBIDDEN SISTER by V.C.Andrews-a review

Forbidden Sister

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 26, 2013

I HAD EVERY REASON TO HATE HER, MY FORBIDDEN SISTER. SHE WAS LIKE SOMEONE WHO HAD DIED BUT WOULDN’T STAY BURIED. . . . Bestselling author V.C. Andrews unlocks an adventure of intrigue and temptation that shatters the innocence of a girl in search of the sister she’s never known.

Emmie Wilcox was only six when her older sister, Roxy, was thrown out of their New York City apartment. Their stern father’s military-style rules left no room for rebellion, and Roxy was continually defiant and rebellious. Emmie, now an outstanding student at a private school, is obedient, respectful, a fille parfaite, as her Parisian-born mother lovingly calls her. Two sisters, total opposites—yet Emmie is secretly obsessed with the mystery and imposed silence surrounding Roxy: What had she finally done to deserve being cast out of her home? Where is she now? Emmie can’t help but wonder if there is a hidden side to her that resembles Roxy’s defiant nature. Sometimes she fantasizes that she is more like Roxy than she appears. Sometimes she wants to be. She wants excitement, and being a good girl all the time is harder than it seems. Finally learning that Roxy is a highly paid escort to wealthy and powerful men, Emmie goes behind her father’s back to track down and spy on the sister she can’t help but be fascinated with, a sister whose influence might run deeper than Emmie ever dreamed.

In a tale twisting with heart-pounding suspense, shocking revelations, and the compelling family drama for which V.C. Andrews is known, Forbidden Sister introduces two new original heroines to capture any reader’s imagination

******************

REVIEW: For anyone who is not aware of the identity of V.C.Andrews, I would like to re-print this little blurb: Her novels were so successful that after her death her estate hired a ghost writer Andrew Neiderman, to write more stories to be published under her name. (Goodreads)

FORBIDDEN SISTER is a sad tale of one young girl who is caught between the love of her family and the need to find her ‘forbidden sister.’

Told in first person POV, we watch as Emmie endeavors to discover where her older sister now resides. Kicked out nine years earlier for being a ‘problem child’, Roxy has led a secret life that accidently crossed paths with her father’s business and in his eyes there would never be any redemption. Clinging to the hope that one day her father would forgive Roxy, Emmie ventures into the big city only to realize she really does not know her sister at all. But when two family tragedies occur within a few weeks of each other, Emmie must seek out her sister and learn what it is to be a family all over-again.

Forbidden Sister is a well written, contemporary drama, sometime depressing and heart breaking storyline about family rejection and social discrimination. We watch as a young girl verging on womanhood must suffer the anguish of a broken heart, discarded by her friends as trash, and suffer the humiliation of being labeled a whore by association. First love is always difficult but makes it even more difficult when rejection is accompanied by betrayal of a friend.

The author takes the reader through the highs and lows of teen angst, depression and isolation, and the perpetual rejection by friends, enemies and frenemies. Even the adults in her life see Emmie as a potential problem. But Emmie’s life takes a fascinating turn when her ‘Forbidden Sister’ becomes her guardian and Emmie is exposed to a lifestyle she thought only existed in storybooks and magazines.

There are times in everyone’s life where the heartache of family and the rejection by friends can overwhelm one’s ability to cope, but V.C.Andrews pulls no punches with the this dysfunctional family drama. One must always remember, that the public façade hides a myriad of sins behind closed doors.

Heart of Ice by P.J. Parrish – a Review

Heart of Ice by P.J. Parrish – a Review

heart of ice

Heart of Ice by P.J. Parrish is my first time reading this series, as well as the author.  This series is a detective mystery, with each book about the hero, Louis Kincaid.  Other then the In-Death series, I have not been reading too much of this type of books this year.  However, I have to say I totally enjoyed this book, and was very very impressed with the two sisters writing team that makes up P.J. Parrish.

Description:
Florida PI Louis Kincaid wants to wear a badge again. But before he can, he must return home to Michigan— and some unfinished business. He hopes to bond with ten-year-old Lily, the daughter he only recently learned existed, and reunite with girlfriend Joe Frye. But new clues to an unsolved murder put his plans on ice. A trip with Lily to enchanting Mackinac Island turns grim when the child falls on a pile of old bones; the dangerous discovery reopens the cold case of Julie Chapman, a teenager from one of the wealthy summer families, who vanished two decades ago. And when Louis is forced to cooperate with a tough state investigator who once worked with Joe, tensions skyrocket. Now, what was supposed to be a time of building lasting ties splinters into disturbing fragments, personally and professionally, as Louis pursues a mystery entangled in dark family secrets and twists even he can’t predict

Review:

Right from the start, we meet our hero, Louis Kincaid, who is a former cop, and now a Private Investigator.  Louis is determined to get his badge back, but before he applies, he takes his newly discovered young daughter, Lily, on a trip to Mackinac Island in Michigan, to have some quality time with her.  This is Louis first time alone with his daughter, and he is very nervous.  While they are taking a bicycle ride around the island, Lily goes further ahead, and Louis can’t find her.  He discovers that she went into an old cabin, and finds that she fell through the rotted floor boards, on top of some old bones.  Lily turns out ok, with a broken arm, but Louis now gets himself involved with a murder mystery from 20 years ago.

Lily leaves to go back home to her mom, and Louis, being an experienced former cop, and PI, is asked by the local police chief for his help, and stays on the island.  We are also introduced to Rafsky, the investigator sent to handle this high profile cold case.

Parrish does a wonderful job creating such interesting and real characters.  Kincaid, though having his own insecurity issues, is a compassionate and thorough investigator.  We meet his girlfriend, Joe, who is also a sheriff in another town.  Rafsky is a troubled and burned out detective, who comes across as withdrawn, unfriendly, and causes friction between him and both Kincaid and the police chief; not to mention he knows Joe, from another case many years ago.

But the main part of this story, besides the great characters, is this murder mystery;  Twenty years ago, Julie Chapman disappeared, and everyone concludes the bones found belong to her. What ensues is a mystery of trying to solve a cold case, with so many twists along the way.  You will be guessing who the murderer is, and change your mind often.  Julie came from a wealthy powerful family, which makes the case that much harder.  At every step, something new is found, bringing in more suspects, as well as misleading evidence.

We learn a lot more of Julie Chapman, and why she was in the cabin in the woods.  This was a fantastic story, and from the beginning you are hooked.  It is impossible to read this, and skip anything, because if you do, you may miss something that could change the game, and there are so many twists.  I will not give out any spoilers, only to say the end was an exciting & fantastic finish, with amazing surprises along the way.  The wonderful writing team of P. J. Parrish does such a wonderful job with this book, as it is so well done, with the story flowing so smoothly.  If you want a good mystery, that has you pushing to finish and find the resolution, then Heart of Ice is perfect for you.  I am happy to have discovered this author, and will continue this series.
