Judging a Book by Its Cover

Sinners On tour

My Sinners on Tour series has been blessed with hot covers, which would correctly indicate that the contents are hot.

Backstage Pass was my first published novel. I still remember how excited I was when my editor sent me an email with the cover attached. I opened the PDF file and stared at the cover with my mouth agape. My first impression was: it’s orange… Very orange. Orange is my least favorite color. The orange cover does draw attention when the book is on the shelf. I won’t deny that. It’s just so… orange. Once I got past the color scheme, I noticed that there were people on the cover. And they appeared to be involved in naughty activities. Okay, that will do. Plenty of naughty activities in the book. I do have a couple of problems with the cover models. First, the man has short hair. The hero of the book has longish hair. He’s a rock star. And he doesn’t have a single tattoo. He just doesn’t remind me of the hero, Brian, at all. As an author, it’s easy to get caught up in the fact that the people on the cover do not match your idea of your characters in the book, but the point of the cover is to draw attention. Backstage Pass’s cover definitely does that.

The next cover in the series, Rock Hard, was even hotter than the first. The models on this one are pretty close to realistic. The big buff guy could be Sed Lionheart. He’s a big buff guy. His tattoos are missing, but that’s a minor consideration. Also the heroine is a strawberry-blonde in the book, not a bleach-blonde like on the cover, but I’m over it. And the whole thing is purple, not orange. I do like purple. It would draw my attention. It’s sensual, just like the book. Thumbs up.

The third book that was released in the series is Double Time. I was surprised by how closely the heroine matched my idea of Reagan, the heroine in the book. And everyone is all naked and flesh-toned. Yeah, I’d say this cover gives you a pretty good idea of what’s inside. One woman, two hot men. The hero, Trey, doesn’t look much like the cover hottie (Trey’s tattoos, piercings, and trademark cherry sucker are all missing), but still, I was really happy with this cover. I didn’t think the designers could top it and then…

I saw the fourth cover—the one for Hot Ticket—and my jaw hit the ground. Out of all the Sinners’ covers, I do think it’s my favorite. It fits the book the most precisely and you can’t see enough of the hero or the heroine for their cover model appearances to get in the way of their descriptions in the book. I didn’t have one complaint about this one. I was especially enamored with it because it was my first cover to have “NY Times and USA Today Best-Selling Author” stamp of approval. Plus, it’s black and white. I always think black and white photos are sexier for some reason. Maybe it’s just me.

The final cover–for Wicked Beat—is not quite in its final form yet, because the book will not be released until later this year. A lot of people have said it’s their favorite cover of the series. I’m not going to argue that it’s a beautiful cover or that the picture is both cute and sexy (just like the contents of the book). I really had a hard time accepting it as an appropriate cover for the book, because the hero of the book is not a guitarist. He’s a drummer. So they photo-shopped some drum sticks into Eric’s pocket to appease me. Eric is also insanely tall and his heroine is incredibly petite (and they both have partially BLUE hair), but any publicist will tell you that the important thing is that the cover draws attention and gets people to check out the book. I definitely think this cover does that. I hope you will check it out.

Which of the Sinners on Tour covers is your favorite? Do you think it’s important for the models on the cover to match the descriptions of the characters in the book? Are you ever drawn to check out a new book solely based on its cover?

Olivia’s first book in her Sinner’s Tour Series, Backstage Pass, was published in 2010 by Sourcebooks. Book two in the series, Rock Hard, was published in 2011 and the third book, Double Time just released November 2012. The last two books in the series are expected to be out in 2013. Die For Me (A Novel of the Valentine Killer) by Cynthia Eden-a review

DIE FOR ME (A Novel of the Valentine Killer) by Cynthia Eden

Die For Me

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 2013

She thought her fiancé was the perfect man—until he turned out to be the perfect killer…

Katherine Cole is running for her life, desperate to escape the Valentine Killer—so-called because he stabs his victims through the heart and leaves them holding a telltale single red rose. Still he tracks her to New Orleans and begins carving a bloody path to her door. But this time, Katherine refuses to run any farther. This time, she’ll do anything to stop the madman she once loved, even trust the sexy cop promising to keep her safe…

Detective Dane Black never lets his emotions interfere with his job, even as the Valentine Killer surfaces in New Orleans to stalk his prey. But when Dane agrees to protect the killer’s ex-fiancée, Katherine Cole, he can’t ignore the passion kindling between them. After a single unforgettable night binds them body and soul, Dane knows he won’t rest until Katherine is safe in his arms—and the Valentine Killer is dead.

************

REVIEW: DIE FOR ME is a contemporary suspense storyline of murder and love. And the sociopathic mind that cannot separate the two.

Cynthia takes the reader on a journey of twists and turns, revelations and obsessions-a serial killer with a need to protect one woman at all costs; and a homicide detective with the same mission-but with a completely different set of morals and obligations. Love comes at a cost.

We follow Katherine as she endeavors to start a new life but the ritualistic murder of a television reporter hits too close to home and Katherine knows that the Valentine Killer has found her again. But going to the police brought more complications when she became their number one suspect. There was only one detective who knew that Katherine Cole was no murderer.

Cynthia intertwines the lives of many of the NOPD detectives, investigators, medical examiners, family and friends-and each will be affected and come into contact with a killer-but is there a copycat doing the work of the Valentine Killer. As the number of murder victims increase, so too, do the accusations, personal vendettas and plots of revenge. And each new victim is somehow linked to Katherine. Is the killer trying to send a message or set Katherine up for the fall?

The attraction between Dane and Katherine was immediate, but Dane knew that sleeping with a potential witness and possible suspect adds a whole other dimension to the investigation. But the pull between Dane and Katherine was obvious to everyone and even the killer kept his eye on Katherine at all times.

DIE FOR ME is a well-written and amazing storyline that you think you have figured out from the start. Although there were certain aspects of the storyline that were easily guessed there are a couple of twists –the question is not so much as whom but how? There is a strong family of secondary characters who play an integral part throughout the storyline. The characters were well developed and you knew that at some point each will have a story to tell.

Kiss of Danger (The Dragon Legion Novellas #1) by Deborah Cooke-a review

KISS OF DANGER (The Dragon Legion Novellas #1) Dragonfire 9a

Kiss of Danger

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 6, 2013

They will sacrifice anything to regain the loves they’ve lost…

Alexander knew he had to fulfill his duty to his kind, the dragon shape shifters called the Pyr, even at the price of abandoning his new wife and young son. After he and his fellows were enchanted for centuries, then finally set free in a future long after their own time, Alexander feared he would never return to his love. Against all odds, the darkfire crystal makes his dream come true, flinging him across the centuries to the world he left behind. Is this his chance to regain the life he lost? Has Katina waited for him? Or has the darkfire crystal sent him back in time for some mysterious purpose of its own?

**************

REVIEW: If you have ever wondered what happened to the Dragon’s Teeth Warriors-the remaining group of 17 Pyr who had been ‘beguiled by an ancient viper, enchanted to take the form of dragon’s teeth and trapped for a millennia’, The Dragon Legion novellas answers some of your questions. Kiss of Danger is Alexander’s story.

Deborah takes the reader on a journey that spans the centuries. Where once, one of the darkfire crystals was hidden in Lorenzo’s hoarde, the Dragon’s Teeth Warriors were now in possession. As the leader of the Warriors, Drake felt the pull of the crystal and with each calling the Warriors were hurdled through time, never knowing where and when they would land. This particular journey finds Alexander, back home, with the mate and son he had abandoned centuries ago, to find that only eight years had past and his family was struggling to survive. Life had changed for his mate and son, and he would recognize that perhaps he was no longer an integral part of their lives.

Deborah brings in many familiar names from past and present, and not only do the Dragon Teeth warriors time travel but they discover that each will be called home at some time. A contemporary enemy returns to the past to seek out another source of the Dragon’s Blood Elixir.

Deborah has written another amazing storyline in the Dragonfire series. She pulls us in by referencing the characters and storylines we have grown to love and we watch as the past collides with future (or present).

Meghan Ciana Doidge -Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Meghan Ciana Doidge-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Interview-Gold

Meghan Ciana Doidge is an award-winning writer and independent filmmaker. She lives in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with her husband, Michael, three persian cats, one turtle and fishes. Meghan has a penchant for bloody love stories, superheroes, and the supernatural. And, she also have a bit of a thing for chocolate, potatoes, and sock yarn.;)

Meghan Doidge

TRC: Hi Meghan and welcome to The Reading Café.  Congratulations on the release of your new Young Adult storyline – TIME WALKER.

Meghan: Thanks for the guest post & interview invitation. What writer doesn’t like to go on and on about her books!!?

TRC: We would like to start with some background information.  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Meghan: I was an actor for a long time before I transitioned into writing and directing independent films. I made a number of short films and was lucky enough to have some of them purchased by broadcasters and screened in international film festivals. I have the first half of the first season of a Sci-Fi web series up on YouTube – if anyone is interested – it’s called SiftingRealities.

TRC: Many authors develop their love of writing at an early age.  What was the catalyst that started you on the road to publication?

Meghan: While I did dabble with writing when I was in my late teens, I was more of a reader, and I still read voraciously. In 2011 an idea I was developing for a screenplay turned out to actually be a book. I never thought I would write a novel. I didn’t think I was that sort of writer – can you tell I put novelists up on a bit of a pedestal? That was my first book, After The Virus.

TRC: What difficulties or challenges have you faced getting your book to publication?

Meghan: Well, it was all new to me, so that is always a huge learning curve. However, I am exceedingly lucky that I have found an amazing cover artist, Irene Langholm, and a great editor, Scott Fitzgerald Gray. I think they help elevate and refine my ideas. I am also blessed to have access to great beta readers, from whom even the smallest note or feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

My greatest personal hurdle, and ongoing struggle, is with the comma, as I am sure you have noted.

Time WalkerTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of TIME WALKER?

LINKS TO ORDER: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO/

Meghan: I came up with the idea for the Spirit Bound series while writing the first book in the Cascadian Chronicles, Spirit Binder. I loved the idea of exploring the world on a somewhat smaller scale where the stakes were personal and specific and not always about saving the world (necessarily).

Specifically, with Time Walker I was intrigued with this idea of being your own worst enemy, how that would segregate you from your life, and taint your perceptions. Then I decided [SPOILER ALERT] that Beth would (pretty literally) have to fight herself to save the ones she loves … hence the time walking.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Meghan: At least three, Beth’s book, Time Walker, Ari’s book (next up) and Rose’s book, but you never know … Calla may get her own book, and there may be others.

TRC: Would you please tell us what you think are the differences between Young Adult storylines and the ‘New Adult’ storylines that have started to hit the publication market?

Meghan: I think Young Adult stories deal with the issues that we come across as we are trying to figure out who we are as people and where we fit in the world. This transition usually happens from the ages 15 – 19 or 20. While this period of our lives can seem so difficult and challenging, I personally found the next section – leaving high school, starting college, completing university, struggling with the difference between a job and a career– more complicated because of maturing relationships, such as, understanding my place within my family dynamic as an adult, at the same times as losing the structure of school, etc, etc. These struggles I would call “New Adult”.

While Time Walker is firmly in the young adult category, my novel, Spirit Binder tackles the issues that are now often called “New Adult’.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Meghan: Hmm, that’s a difficult question to answer. I’ll have to think about it …

TRC: If you could change something about yourself personal or professional, what would it be and why?

Meghan: At this moment in time, I wouldn’t change a thing, but I’ve struggled to get to that point. Maybe a bit less of a struggle would have been nice, but then I don’t think I’d be me, and I like me.

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

Meghan: I think all storytellers have many, many influences, too many to list … but, quickly: writers: Margaret Atwood, William Gibson, Stephen King, Anne Rice, etc, etc. Filmmakers: The Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, Stephen Spielberg, Wes Anderson. Specific movies/novels: Gone with the Wind, True Romance, Princess Bride, etc.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Meghan: My muse, my rock, without whom I would not be able to write the stories I do write, my husband, Michael.

TRC: What are some of the things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Meghan: I’d like to bring out 3-4 novels a year … I have another two series I am starting this year. I’d like to see some of them on the big screen as well!!

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Meghan: I am currently writing the first draft of an urban fantasy called, Cupcakes, Trinkets and Other Deadly Magic. I will probably quickly follow that up with a second book, and then work on the sequels to Spirit Binder and Time Walker.

Time Walker by Meghan Ciana Doidge-a review

TIME WALKER by Meghan Ciana Doidge-a review

Time Walker
ABOUT THE BOOK:  Released January 13, 2013

Beth was sneaky. No lock could hold her. No cage could confine her. No door could bar her way. But, when your adoptive mother is a Spirit Binder, and all your siblings are elementals, being sneaky doesn’t really rank. That is until the devastation of a city draws her omniscient mother’s attention, and her siblings go missing one by one, then Beth’s sneakiness is the only thing standing between her, her loved ones, and the worst enemy she’ll ever face: herself.

****************

TIME WALKER by Meghan Ciana Doidge is a fantasy YA novel and the first in her Spirit Bound series. There is an introductory novel, Spirit Bound that takes place ten years previously, but you don’t need to read it first.

I am new to the Fantasy genre and I wasn’t sure that I would appreciate this novel, but once I starting reading, I was hooked!! This is the story of a group of children with wonderful gifts and abilities who were adopted by the most powerful being in the Kingdom, Theo the Spirit Binder. Time Walker centers around Beth, who is unsure that her “gift” is as great as her siblings. She is able to walk in the shadows and open any lock or ward placed before her. She is good at being sneaky, but is that all?

On the morning after her sister’s Rite of Passage, a terrible earthquake occurs and all of the adults go to the village to help. Beth and her siblings, plus visitors Finn and Cara are left alone in the castle. You know that something wrong will happen when all of the adults are away! Rose, the younger sister is kidnapped by a being who feels “wrong”. The siblings are on the chase and Finn, who can track anything is puzzled. Rose’s presence appears and disappears at random. One by one, her siblings start to disappear. Finally, Beth comes face to face with the kidnapper. It is an older woman that looks like her, but somehow is different. There is a“wrongness” about her, in fact, she seems mad!! Mad as in CRAZY! What do you do when your older self appears in front of you? Yes, Beth has some gifts that she didn’t know she possessed! This is a tricky situation, Beth knows that it is her future self and she has this time walker gift, but how can she fight a being that is herself? Finn is by her side the whole time while they are trying to solve the puzzle of what happens in the future. It is a wonderful story with a lot of action and questions answered about future Beth and the horrors that she will face. It’s a time honored dilemma for time walkers, should you change the present to prevent future happenings? It is also a story of family. Theirs’ is an adoptive family, but they pull together and protect each other. Beth is willing to sacrifice all to save her family against her future self. Finn is wonderful and is an anchor for Beth. Yes, every novel needs a swoon-worthy hero!

In conclusion, Time Walker is a great YA read, written for all ages. I really enjoyed this book and I did go back and read the prequel, which was also fantastic!!
