An Interview with Kasie West

An Interview with Kasie West

kasie west

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Kasie West as our guest today.

She is here today to discuss her new book, Pivot Point, just recently released, as well as to tell us a little bit about herself.

Hi Kasie.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Kasie: I am a stay at home mom of four amazing kids. My oldest is 14 and my youngest 6. Which means I also answer to ‘hey you’ or ‘what’s for dinner’. I eat Jr. Mints by the bucketfuls and love listening to good sappy rock ballads. Of course I love to read and write, probably more than is good for me, so I counteract all that sitting by letting people kick my butt at the gym four days a week.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Kasie: No. I’ve always been a reader but never thought to write until about six years ago when I had an idea for a book and decided to give it a try. That book was not Pivot Point and it was pretty awful. But I liked writing so much that I kept at it and got better with practice.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Kasie: Writing with kids is quite challenging. The amount of times I’m interrupted can mess with my flow a lot. So I try to write when the kids are at school or asleep.

TRC:  Pivot Point is your debut novel. Can you tell how you came up with the idea of this story? How many books do you plan for this series?

Kasie: Pivot Point was inspired by the movie Sliding Doors. But I also love the idea of alternate realities. It was fun to explore that part of the story. And as for now, Pivot Point has a sequel, but I’m playing with the idea of a third,  perhaps with different  main characters but set in the same world…..we’ll see.

pivot piont

TRC: Would you please tell us the premise behind Pivot Point?

Kasie: Pivot Point is about a girl who when faced with a choice has the ability to see both outcomes. That’s the simplest way to describe it, but of course, there is more. Boys and friendship, choices and heartache, murder mystery and past injuries.

TRC: You have another Contempory YA novel coming in the fall of 2013, would you please tell us a little about this?

Kasie: Ah, yes. I love contemporary. This is the first one I have coming out and I adore it. Caymen works in her mom’s porcelain doll shop where she meets Xander, who is coming in to pick up a doll for his grandmother. He is beyond rich and therefore automatically uninteresting to Caymen. But between his persistence and charm, Caymen finds herself letting go of some long held beliefs and letting herself believe he is different.

Can you tell I haven’t had to explain this story as much as Pivot Point? Ha. I’m very excited about it though.

TRC: Besides the above new novel, what are you currently working on?

Kasie: I just turned in copy edits for the second book to Pivot Point where Caymen’s story continues, but some new characters and abilities are also brought into the mix. And I’m working on edits for my second contemporary which comes out in the summer of 2014. But I also have some new paranormal ideas that are in there very early stages.

TRC: Do you have any thoughts of writing in any other genres?

Kasie: Don’t tell my agent (I already jump all around within the YA genre) but I have a half finished middle grade that I love so much. We’ll see. It’s been half finished for a while because my other projects have been keeping me busy, but it’s my fun side project that I go back to every now and again.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Kasie: First I open a blank word document and start at the cursor for ten minutes, then I write one sentence, then I check twitter, then I eat chocolate, then I erase that sentence. Yeah, I have no process. Some weeks I’m super productive and write any spare moment I get. Other weeks, I’m very unmotivated. But I do have one very specific chair in my room that I always write in. It’s big and comfortable and green.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with family and friends.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kasie: I’m lucky to have many writer friends that help me brainstorm: Jenn Johansson (Insomnia), Natalie Whipple (Transparent), Renee Collins (Relic), Candice Kennington, Sara Raasch. Plus my husband is very patient and supportive and humors me while I talk through ideas with him.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kasie: I just want to thank everyone for all the support they’ve given me. From friends to perfect strangers, I’ve been feeling a lot of love for Pivot Point and that means the world to me. Thank you!

Pivot Point by Kasie West – a Review

Pivot Point by Kasie West – a Review

pivot piont

Description:
Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with–her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

Review:

Pivot Point by Kasie West is another YA novel that I have read this past year, but I have to say that this one is totally different. Kasie West has created a unique storyline of one story with two different views of being able to choose which life  path you want to live.  Sounds different?  It is and very well done by West.

Our heroine is Addison “Addie” Coleman, who lives in a compound of paranormal humans with enhanced mental abilities.  This compound is secret to the rest of the human world.  Addie is a searcher, which enables her to see her own future, and make choices accordingly as to which path she needs to follow.  When we meet Addie, she finds out her parents are getting a divorce.  Much to her despair, she has to choose who to live with, and decides to do a search on both possibilities.  Her mother will remain in the compound, and her father is leaving to work in the human (no enhanced abilities) world.  One of the best things about this book is that West has created some wonderful characters.  Addie being the main character is wonderful, and you like her from the start.  Her best friend Laila, who has the ability to erase memories, is also a fantastic character, as her loyal and fun loving friend.  Both male leads Trevor and Duke are two male love interests, but there is no triangle, since each male is the main character in the different path possibilities of her search into the future.

As Addie searches the choices of living with each parent, she faces so many things that will mature her much further in life. In one path vision, staying in the paranormal compound, Duke, who is the hot football star, becomes her possible love interest.   In the other normal world, where she cannot use her abilities; she stays with her father, and meets Trevor, who will become her friend and possible love interest.  We follow her visions, with each chapter showing her living life with her mother or her father, and how her current friends still remain as a realistic part of the story.  I found this fascinating, and enjoyed watching Addie live in each of her choices, as she matures, faces life with friends, school, family and even danger

In each of the visions, there are a couple of villains, which will play a big part of the story, as well as her final decision.  Addie’s father is involved in investigating a murder mystery, which eventually pulls her into a dangerous situation, which will risk the lives of those she holds dear.  West does not take the easy way, and makes you think what is the right choice.  The choice Addie makes, will effect those around her, and change her future.  But I will not give spoilers, but say that this is a wonderful and different story.  In most cases I do not like switching back and forth between chapters, but West did this so well, flowing beautifully.  You understood what was happening and as the tension builds, with each vision effected.   Pivot Point is a wonderful novel by by Kasie West.   Well done.

What’s it like to live in Australia?

When I was asked to write a post on what it’s like to live down under I didn’t know where to start. It wasn’t until I thought about my life from an outsider’s point of view that I considered maybe telling you a little about my week would suffice.

So here is the Aussie-ness from my week (please be aware I wrote this on 30th Dec, 2012 – yes I’m very early with my guest posts):
~ My husband rang me this morning to tell me he hit a kangaroo on the way to work. Yes, it may sound funny but those things are like suicide ninjas. One minute the road is clear, the next, 150 kilos of biting, scratching kangaroo is right in front of your car. But thankfully hubby was a-ok.

kangaroos

~ I have two working dogs, although I don’t live on a farm. One is a border collie – a sheep dog. The other is a blue-heeler – a cattle dog. Very Australian. 😉

dogs

~ I’m currently babysitting a blue-tongue lizard for my next-door neighbours cause apparently a normal family pet wouldn’t cut it.

~ My Christmas day consisted of a huge feast on the back veranda of my father-in-laws property. We ate prawns (not shrimp), ham, salads and finished the day off with a huge water fight.

~ And the highlight was going yabbying with my family and my father-in-law.

I hope you enjoyed a little insight into my Aussie life and will love Concealed Desire, which is based in Melbourne, Australia.

Book Blurb

A love that breaks all the rules…

Since her first day at work, Beth Graison has been in love with Dean Sutherland—the “Son” in Sutherland & Son. Although he’s an unrepentant player, there’s an unmistakable connection between them, and she knows he feels it too. But she’s not about to risk her career for any man, especially one with an office right down the hall whom she works with every day.

Dean Sutherland doesn’t do love, but he does do women. And he hasn’t felt more than sexual attraction for any woman until Beth. Entirely feminine, smart, and with a natural beauty beyond compare, she makes him think about all kinds of uncomfortable things—like a future and happiness—things he knows from experience are pure fiction.

When his father, the “Sutherland” in Sutherland & Son, propositions Beth to be more than just an employee, Dean can’t keep her at arm’s length any longer. But he doesn’t expect the scorching kiss they share, or the idea that forms when he holds her in his arms. Can he stop his father’s manipulating game by making the first move on Beth? Or will his reputation as a womanizer make him just one more Sutherland she wants to ignore?

Yasmine Galenorn-Interview with the Author

Yasmine Galenorn-Interview with the Author

Yasmine Galenorn

With the January 29, 2013 release of HAUNTED MOON-the 13th story line in the Otherworld series, The Reading Cafe would like to introduce the fabulous author-YASMINE GALENORN

Follow Yasmine at : Goodreads / Website/Blog/Facebook / Twitter / Tumblr

Interview yellow:black

TRC: Hi Yasmine and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the new release-HAUNTED MOON.

For anyone who does not know Yasmine Galenorn, would you please tell us something about yourself?

Yasmine: Well, my bio reads as such: New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn writes urban fantasy for Berkley: both the Otherworld/Sisters of the Moon Series for Berkley and the Indigo Court urban fantasy series. In the past, she wrote mysteries for Berkley Prime Crime, and nonfiction metaphysical books. You can reach her at her website, Twitter, and on Facebook. Yasmine has been in the Craft for over 32 years, is a shamanic witch, and describes her life as a blend of teacups and tattoos. She lives in Kirkland WA with her husband Samwise and their cats.

What my bio doesn’t say is that I collect Old Country Roses china, my favorite magazine is Victoria Magazine, I collect daggers and have a kick-ass sword. I’m heavily inked and planning out my next tattoos, everything I do is tinged with my spirituality, I’m low carb and blog a lot about my food allergies/intolerances/and low carb lifestyle. I wanted to be a writer since I was three years old. I’ve had over 34 books published, not including anthologies, I’m a Capricorn and work my ass off, but I also like to play hard. ~smiles~ There’s a lot more but it would fill a book.

haunted-moonTRC: HAUNTED MOON (Book #13) is the latest release (January 29, 2013) in your OTHERWORLD series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Yasmine: Camille and her sisters are facing down Gulakah, the Lord of Ghosts and his minions, in this book, they have to face him down and hopefully defeat him. Camille and Morio find their relationship shifting, thanks to Aeval and the Courts of Fae, and their descent into the world of death magic grows stronger, and more intense. At the same time, Telazhar is escalating the war in Otherworld. And, of course, Menolly and Delilah are experiencing their own changes as well. Oh—and Iris is very pregnant. ~grins~

Yasmine Galenorn Collage

TRC: If you could virtually cast the lead characters in your OTHERWORLD series, which models or actors would best represent your ideal images?

Yasmine: To be honest, I wouldn’t. Except for Rozurial, and I can so see a long haired Hugh Jackman as Rozurial. But I’ve yet to see any actress I’d cast (looks-wise) as any of the sisters. For one thing, my characters aren’t human, they have an otherworldly look that would be hard to get. For another, I just can’t see the series as live-action movies. However, I would love to see the books come out as anime—I think as an anime series, it would work, much like InuYasha.

TRC: You have a very specific playlist of music and musicians that you listen to as you write each of your novels. How much influence do the songs and musicians have on your writing or does your writing influence the type of music you listen to?

Yasmine: Well, it’s synergistic. I never add music to my playlists that I wouldn’t normally listen to, but within the scope of my musical tastes (which is fairly large, barring country, folk, and easy listening), the playlists are chosen for the mood of the book, and the main character involved. You’ll always find Gary Numan, Mark Lanegan, and a few other artists on every list, and a few songs make every single list.

Night Vision July 2013

TRC: NIGHT VISION is the next installment (July 2013) in your INDIGO COURT series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Yasmine: Destined to become the Fae Queens of Winter and Summer, Wind Witch Cicely and her cousin Rhiannon are eager to assume their roles and marry the loves of their lives. But while Myst hides in the shadows, seeking to regroup her forces, a closer danger is lurking. Renegade vampires Geoffrey and Leo manage to free the Blood Oracle and set him upon New Forest, Washington. Not satisfied with wreaking havoc on the town, Leo ups the ante by kidnapping Rhiannon. Now, Cicely must lead her forces in a bloody battle to save her cousin before everything they’ve worked for crumbles to dust.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Yasmine: That depends on who you ask. I’m hardcore Pagan, yes, but I’m not at all Wiccan, I’m a shamanic Witch and High Priestess. I’m practical and extremely goal oriented, and I am so NOT a new-ager type. I’m a hardcore carnivore. I’m not a pacifist, I’m learning to use a gun properly and am not anti-gun, though yes—I do believe we need stronger gun control laws. While I am extremely socially liberal, I am also very conservative when it comes to dealing with certain perverted elements of the criminal world.

As an author, I’d have to say that the biggest misconception is that I have all this spare time in which to goof around. I write 60-80 hours a week. Any spare time is time carved out, not extra time lying around. What success I’ve had is success I’ve created, not luck falling into my lap. Life is what you choose to make it. While not everything that you want will happen—there are no guarantees in life—nothing good happens without working your butt off for it. ~smiles~

TRC: If you could change something about yourself personal or professional, what would it be and why?

Yasmine: Professionally: Well it’s not something I can guarantee, but I’d love to hit the top of the NYT. Always have wanted that. I’d like to see my readership increase dramatically. And if I could—I’d love to be able to write a fourth novel each year. There are so many stories I want to tell for my readers. And for myself. ~smiles~

Personally: I’m making major changes in my body, so it’s more of a matter of how far I can take them as opposed to wishing I could make them. I went low carb almost two years ago to counter mild type 2 diabetes, and my life has changed in absolutely wonderful ways. I’m so much healthier, my blood sugar has normalized, I’ve dropped six sizes so far, the lack of sugar and starch has loosened up my joints and taken away a good share of the chronic pain I was in. I’m still losing weight (and can well afford to lose weight—and want to), and I feel fantastic. I’ve also been exercising for three years now and that has been good for me too.

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

Yasmine: There is no one person who has been the biggest influence, but there are a number that have had huge influences on various parts of my life. The short list (of a longer list):
The writers who influenced me the most artistically: Ray Bradbury, Daphne du Maurier, Richard Adams.
The writers/friends whose work ethics I most admire (and tend to be most like): Laurell Hamilton, Stella Cameron, Sherrilyn Kenyon.
The friend who constantly reminds me to stay on my spiritual path, through action rather than words: Angela.
The friend who reminds me to have fun and not grow up too fast: Jayelle.
The friend who reminds me that my age doesn’t have to stifle me: Carol.
The friend who rules the universe with me: Daniela.
The friend to whom I cannot lie: Andrew.
The person who reminds me that yes, someone can be in love with me and find me attractive: Samwise.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Yasmine: That depends on the situation. ~grins~ The list includes: Samwise, Angela, Jayelle, Daniela, Carol, Scotty, Marc, Andrew, Laurell, Lisa, and Linda. And the reasons why? Are as varied as the people involved.

TRC: What are the goals you would like accomplish in the next ten years?

Yasmine: Expand and continue the Otherworld Series in ways that my readers do not even yet expect. Hit the top of the NYT list, of course. Increase my readership by a wide margin. Start another series that I’ve been thinking about after I finish up the Indigo Court Series. Write several standalone novels.

And on a personal level: reach a point (in the next year or so) where I stabilize my weight and health. Be healthier than I’ve ever been (trust me, I wasn’t that healthy as a teenager). Be in better shape and look better than I have in years. Be stronger than ever. Increase my magickal practice (am working on that now) in the new direction its taking. Make being “middle aged” fun and sensuous and brilliant, rather than a long slide down.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Yasmine: I’m writing Autumn Whispers, after which I’ll write Crimson Veil (book 15 in the OW series). And—as I answer this—I’m gearing up for the release of Haunted Moon.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Foods: Steak, lobster, raspberries.

Favorite Dessert: Berries (I don’t eat dessert anymore)

Favorite TV Show: Criminal Minds. Chopped.

Last Movie You Saw: Worlds Away (at the theatre).

Dark or Milk Chocolate: I prefer milk chocolate but cannot eat it due to the dairy and the sugar, so very dark chocolate has to do (dairy free, and as low carb as I can find it).

Do you have any pets? LOL, everybody who follows me knows I’m the crazy cat lady. I’m an ailurophile. We have four kitties. They are my babies.

TRC: Thank you Yasmine for taking the time to answer our questions.
Congratulations on the latest release. We wish you much success will all of your future projects and novels.

Yasmine: Thank you!

Yasmine Galenorn-Biography and Bibliography

YASMINE GALENORN-Biography and Bibliography

Yasmine Galenorn 2

From Yasmine Galenorn’s Website

Hi, I’m New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn. In April 2012, I won a Career Achievement Award in Urban Fantasy at the Romantic Times Convention.

I write two urban fantasy series, the Otherworld Series, (aka Sisters of the Moon Series), and Indigo Court Series for Berkley. In the past, I’ve also written a paranormal mystery series (the Chintz ‘n China Series) for Berkley Prime Crime, a short-lived mystery series (the Bath & Body Series) under the name of India Ink, again for Berkley Prime Crime, and eight metaphysical nonfiction books (Llewellyn Publications and Crossing Press).

I’m represented by Meredith Bernstein of the Meredith Bernstein Literary Agency–I adore my agent and am thrilled to have her on my side.

And yes, I’m a shamanic witch and am considered an elder in the Pagan community, having been in the Craft since February 29th (yes, leap year day), 1980. I walk an eclectic path and consider my life to be a blend of teacups and tattoos–the former in my china closet, the latter on my skin–I’m heavily inked. I no longer teach magical workshops nor do I accept students or offer personal magical advice. I collect teacups, teapots, Old Country Roses china (Royal Albert), antlers and skulls (of the non-human variety), daggers and crystals. And of course, my bookshelves are overflowing with books. I cannot walk out of a bookstore without buying at least one book. My TBR pile is huge!

I’m a theatre major, a 1983 graduate of the Evergreen State College (Olympia WA). I started college when I was fifteen, skipping high school. I took extra time to finish because of money considerations and a hiatus when I was 17, to hitchhike to California where I lived with one of my sisters for a brief time.

On Beltane, 1993 (May 1st) I married Samwise and we’re still very happily married. We are the parents of one senior kitty and three young cats. Three of our senior gurlz went over the Bridge a few years ago and we still miss them terribly. We reside in the Seattle WA area.

Because so many people ask, you pronounce my first name this way: Yaz-mihn (NOT Jasmine–it’s a “Y”, not a “J”) and our last name is pronounced: Gal-eh-norn. The accent is on the first syllable. Interesting trivia: Samwise and I created our last name together after we got married. At first, he took my last name, but I decided I didn’t want to be stuck with my stepfather’s last name forever. So we decided to construct a name that would be ours alone and that would mean something to us. We created our last name out of the Elvish in LOTR. Galenorn means Green Tree in Elvish, went to court, and legalized it. And yes, Samwise is his *real* name.

A few random facts:

My favorite foods: Tomatoes, Steak, Chocolate, Raspberries, Lobster, Mussels
My favorite perfumes: Opium, Organza Indecence, Warm Sugar Vanilla, Black Raspberry Vanilla
My favorite animal: Cats
My favorite books: Watership Down, Rebecca, Lord of the Rings, Anything by Ray Bradbury
My favorite Anime: InuYasha
My favorite movies: Oh man, too many to mention. Rebecca–absolute favorite. But the list of the ones I love is HUGE. Alien/Aliens; Terminator/T2; Tremors; almost anything Hitchcock; Thor; Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion; Conan the Barbarian (with Arnold); Doors; Indiana Jones; 2001; Andromeda Strain; the Mummy movies; Sleepy Hollow; Dead Poets’ Society; One Hour Photo; Eight Legged Freaks…and the list goes on and on…
My favorite groups: GARY NUMAN FOREVER!!! Um…okay, now that that’s out of my system, add in: Mark Lanegan; Beck; Ladytron; Rob Zombie; Jethro Tull; Devo; Asteroids Galaxy Tour; Android Lust; Thompson Twins; Bowie; Nirvana; Nine Inch Nails; Gabrielle Roth; Tangerine Dream; Air; Doors; Amanda Blank; Gotye; and so….many….more….
Random Passions: volcanoes, dinosaurs, mummies, magic/witchcraft, sex, makeup, fashion
As to other information, well, that’s all you need to know right here. 🙂
