ABOUT THE AUTHOR from Goodreads/Website

Victoria Danann

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of my mind for a few years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch (for the past thirteen years) I play Classic Rock music and manage one of Houston’s premier R&B bands.

This series includes some of my education in the paranormal and fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing “metaphysician”, but, of course, most of the material is fantasy. All of the books will feature strong female leads with strong male support.

For the past fourteen years, Victoria has illustrated and authored Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners and written several non-fiction books on magickal arts. She lives in a town north of Houston known as The Woodlands even though the idea of the witch in the woods may be a cliché.

She owns 7th House Publishing and contributes to its enterprises. In addition to art and writing, she plays Classic Rock music (keys, rhythm guitar, vocals) and manages one of Houston’s premier party bands. Married. Four children.

To begin, I’m not a great lover of scientific jargon and find details about inter-dimensional travel to be boring. When first opening this book I thought “Oh my, this is going to be such a chore”. How could I have ever been so wrong? LOL While there is a little introduction to the aspects of this phenomenon, it was small and a really good set-up for the coming magnificent story!

Ok, that said let’s get on with the story. The worlds explored are on Earth, but are very different from our own. Someone once said that each little stone on a beach, if moved could change the world. So, if Hitler hadn’t been stopped, what kind of world would we have today…perish the thought. But if polio vaccine hadn’t been invented or discovered what would our world be like if even one hero had gotten polio and not been there to be a hero? That’s the type of changes…some smaller, some larger. Many things are familiar – but very different.

In this world there is secret organization that protects humans and others from many dangers: vampire, demon, and perverts…all manner of evil doers. The agents, or fighters for this organization are actually knights…yes, knights. Only the very best of the best and not many of even those are awarded this honor. This organization was having a meeting of their best team (B Team) of the Order of Black Swans.

While on another world, Elora Laiken and her whole royal family were being attacked and the attackers were winning. To save her young life her friend and tutor, Thelonius Monq or for short”Monq”, sent her to another dimension via his untested vortex invention.

While the invention does “save” her life she emerges in mid-air in the meeting of the Black Swan B Team and quite literally drops out of thin air. Only while she is alive, she is not without injury. She is in fact a blob of skinned, broken and bloody flesh. Not even recognizable as necessarily “human”. Some of the knights being startled and cautious voted to “kill it”, but Sir Storm (oh year, I do love a good storm) took the initiative to carry the “blob” to medical help.
You know I don’t do spoilers… let me just say that any time spent reading this book, even this whole series will not be a waste of time.

Victoria Danann has crafted an incredible world or worlds. The characters are each magnificent in their own unique way (though I wouldn’t mind at all being mated to any of these alpha males). Her secondary characters are equally well done. Conversations are realistic, humorous, provocative and just plain fun. The plot is wonderful, twisty, funny and heart rending. All the things an epic should be. You are literally in this world with them, experiencing their pains, triumphs and frustrations. And the sex is well written, and enthralling.

I think the term “a must read” is probably overused, so how do I tell you that you really haven’t lived until you’ve read this series? Yeah, it’s that good!

The Witch’s Dream by Victoria Danann -The Order of The Black Swan Series #2

The Witch's Dream

Amazon

The trilogy is available in a box set : Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO/Smashwords

This is book 2 of the Order of the Black Swan. I usually hesitate a bit at sequels, they very often seem to try too hard to be like the first…relax, not so with this book. It actually begins where book 1 (My Familiar Stranger) leaves off.

The first chapter gives you the idea of where the next big problem is coming from and who the target is! In this case our very wonderful friend Sir Kay (the berserker of the group) and his lovely bride-to-be Katrina. In the meantime we are delighted with the Irish hand fasting (wedding) of Ram and Elora.
Again Victoria Danann has used her remarkable talent to craft wonderful scenes of family life, even among the elven royalty. The marvelous conversations and romantic antics of Ram and Elora are absolutely so enthralling you forget the other shoe is about to drop on their friends…hence surprise when it does.
While in Edinburgh, B-Team has the hand fasting and also is assigned to a new group to help with a task while they are there. This is where our beautiful and talented witch Litha Brandywine comes in and at the first sight of Sir Storm falls head over heels in love with him (heck, I did that in the first book-LOL-tall, dark handsome, muscular, honorable, and well endowed – what’s not to love? LOL).

Litha works for the Order as a tracker. However, Sir Storm believes he’s still in love with Elora and is not exactly receptive to Litha (men, the great looks don’t always go the brain first). Fortunately, she a very determined little witch!

That’s all the spoilers I’m giving out! This is a wonderfully twisty and exciting book. The storyline is completely different while maintaining the same relationships and wonderful people, just a few additions to accommodate the twists.

It’s incredibly exciting, and for me, impossible to put down. I devoured it like it was made of chocolate and caramel. I’m writing this with slightly shaky hands cause I just can’t wait to get to book 3.

The Summoner’s Tale by Victoria Danann-The Order of The Black Swan Series #3

A Summoner's Tale

Amazon

The trilogy is available in a box set : Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO/Smashwords

The Summoners Tale – The Vampires confessor is the third in the Black Swan Series. And they say the best things come in 3’s, I believe that is absolutely correct!

OMG, OMG! This series is on my favorites list! We begin book 3 where book 2 left off. I love the continuity of this series. The great friends from the first two are ever present and we get views of their continuing stories and how their lives are going. The B Team (Bad Company – bad as in badass) is the elite of the Black Swan organization. And the wonderful alpha male knights and the one female knight are the reason. Each now with very special mates that has interesting talents of their own.

Victoria has built great relationships between the team members and their spouses, with many interactions that save each other’s lives.
Primary story in this book is our friend Istvan Baka, ex-vampire. He is trying to move forward with the vampire cure project. He finds himself distracted and in love with Heather who shows only contempt for him. Ram’s little sister will play a huge part in finding out why, and the answers are thought provoking and thrilling!

Okay…no spoiling the great telling of the magnificent story. But the twists and dangers are many to all the characters that are known and loved. Victoria has written each book with individual tales of threats and heroics, but tied them together to move the story arch farther and farther along. A few new characters are coming in, while some secondary characters are stepping up and coming to more focus in the overall story.

I love the world(s) she has designed. The basic issues that all the different races are facing and trying to overcome. While they now have to prepare for other worlds beginning to have inter-dimensional travel more perfected than the one poor Elora was pushed into. Interesting scientific concepts side by side with issues of age old prejudices; a great mixture of science and humanity – much like reality.

If you haven’t tried this series, I urge you invest a little time to it! You will not be disappointed, but enthrallment is a definite possibility! Personally, I’m looking forward to the 4th book coming in May of 2013!

When one of them is gravely injured, the two discover their passion runs deeper than either of them could have imagined and they have Dr. Stefan Harper to thank for that chance.

Dr. Harper is happy to have given the couple a second chance, but realizes through Josh and Edie, as well as his good friends Val and Griff, that what’s missing from his life is love

REVIEW: PROTECTOR is a short novella in Nancy Northcott’s The Protector’s series focusing on a magical group of protectors and guardians known as the Mage. The Mage are a gifted species of people who source their power from the elements but their enemies-the ghouls-suck the life force and power from the mage to survive. In PROTECTOR the ghouls, with the help of mage power, have developed a weapon that connects with the mage and in doing so, will slowly deplete their victim until nothing is left.

In PROTECTOR firefighter Edie Lang and pilot Josh Campbell battle forest fires as well as each other in a struggle with life and death. Returning from a recent fire, both will find themselves weakened and unable to remember certain aspects of their latest job. It is only when they begin to piece together their memories do they uncover a possible cause to their shared illness and loss of power.

Josh and Edie have a past-one that is mired in miscommunication and Josh’s reluctance to accept Edie as a woman capable of fighting fires. His worry and need to protect carries onto the job when he is unable to separate the woman that he loves from the fire fighter entering dangerous territory. As well as battling the unknown cause of their loss of power, Josh and Edie battle each other in a test of wills.

PROTECTOR is a welcome storyline that leads into Nancy’s next instalment in The Protector series. Dr.Stefan Harper is the resident Mage physician who has been unable to extinguish the memories of the woman he had given up years before, and in Protector, there is a build up to his story. Protector is a fast paced, interesting storyline about two strong willed and capable heroes, who have issues of control when it involves the other. When it looks likes neither is willing to compromise, one must step forward and relinquish his need to protect above all else.

Nancy and Marissa have offered a deleted scene and some background information on the heroine of PROTECTOR

DELETED SCENE from PROTECTOR by Nancy Northcott

Wildland fire plays an important role in Nancy Northcott’s novella, Protector.  Firefighter Edie Lang and helicopter pilot Josh Campbell almost had a one-night stand three years ago, but Josh backed away.  Now they’ve met again while fighting a fire in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp.

This scene would have come near the end of the story.

Edie drove the Pulaski’s hoe blade in the sandy, grassy soil and pulled.  She frowned into the trench she and her hotshot crewmages had dug, making sure it was clear of plants and flammable debris.  Focus was critical, but the job didn’t distract her enough, today, to get her mind off Josh.  Or the woman he’d stood so close to in the chow line.

Fresh tears stung her eyes. Scowling, she blinked them back.  Idiot.  Stupid, overly sensitive, girlish idiot.  Josh has a right to flirt if he wants to. Maybe he hadn’t been, but the way he and that woman–that very pretty woman–stood so close had seemed like flirting.

His behavior was officially no longer her problem.  Once this fire was out and the various crews working it went their separate ways, she wouldn’t see him again.

So what if his muscular build, light brown hair and smiling hazel eyes were seared into her heart?  She could cope.  She was good at coping.

At least now she’d made the hole fourteen inches deep, down to pure soil.  She moved right and started again.  They had to stop the fire from jumping out of the peat and into this sandy area with its oily saw palmetto ground cover and slash pines.  Fire would devour this stuff like a kid with candy, racing through it and toward the houses near the road.

“Edie?”  The voice belonged to Jenny Martin, one of the two other women on the Three Pines Hotshots crew.  The tall brunette peered into Edie’s face.  “You okay?”

“Yeah.”  Edie kept her focus on the sandy soil she was turning.  “Smoke’s bothering my eyes.”

Jenny dug her own Pulaski into the ground.  “You sure it’s smoke, not Captain Gorgeous in the flight suit?  I saw the way you looked at him.”

Busted.  Edie sighed.  “Jenn, it’s confusing.”

At least the guys taking down pines wouldn’t hear them over the growl of their chainsaws.

“Maybe,” Jenny said, “but he watched you walk away, and he didn’t look happy.”

That was some comfort but not much.  “Unfortunately, he’s not unhappy enough to do anything about it.”

Shaking her head, Edie stretched.  “That should do it here.  Let’s see if they need us to help take down trees.  I’m in the mood to watch things crash.”

“Oh, crap!”

Edie barely heard Jenny over a sudden roar.  The dry trees to their left were crowning, fire rushing up the trunks and spitting out debris.   At the same time, the peaty ground fifty yards away erupted in flame.

Hell.  Fire could travel underground for long distances and erupt in peat that had seemed clear.

Edie’s eyes met Jenny’s in agreement.  They had to fall back, and fast.

The two women grabbed their gear and ran for the road, only to find the flames roaring on either side of it.  They and the two men nearest them were cut off

Edie set her jaw.  Her magic could hold back the flames for a while, but only that.  And the super-heated gases in the air were a problem all on their own.  The hotshots needed a helicopter pickup, and fast.

Character Profile: Edie Lang
Protector by Nancy Northcott

Wildland fire plays an important role in Nancy Northcott’s novella, Protector. Firefighter Edie Lang and helicopter pilot Josh Campbell almost had a one-night stand three years ago, but Josh backed away. Now they’ve met again while fighting a fire in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp.

Edie is the woman Josh could’ve loved but lost. Or, as Edie would put it, she’s the woman he chickened out on.

Of medium height, blue-eyed and with blonde hair she keeps short during fire seasons, she’s a wildland firefighter. Edie and Josh met when they worked on the same helicopter-based firefighting crew in Wyoming. Edie left that job to join the Three Pines Interagency Hotshot Crew out of Ft. Collins, Colorado.

A love of the outdoors drew Edie to wildland firefighting. She enjoys hiking in the wilderness.

Here’s a look at Edie writing an email to her mom:

“Don’t know how long we’ll be here in Georgia. The Okefenokee is a peat bog, and drought has left a lot of that peat exposed as well as making everything easier to burn. And lots of it is.

“I saw somebody I didn’t expect yesterday. That guy I told you about, the helicopter pilot in Wyoming, is here. I don’t know where he’s working now, but it doesn’t matter. I don’t think I’ll have to deal with him.”

Edie frowned at the screen. She’d better not have to deal with him. Josh was as good-looking as ever, with that killer smile, light brown hair, and drool-worthy bod. But three years of not seeing him killed the irritation and, yes, okay, hurt of the night that almost was.

Of course he’d had to answer his pager, make that emergency drop of retardant on the fire. But no one had forced him to say he’d find her when he finished. And he shouldn’t have said it if he wasn’t going to do it.

So no, she wouldn’t deal with Josh if she could possibly avoid it.

Candace Knoebel-Interview with the Author

Candace Knoebel-Interview with the Author

Candace KnoebelABOUT THE AUTHOR: Candace Knoebel had dreamed of being a dancer ever since she could remember. With a love of all things art, she saw herself moving to New York and pursuing her passion as an artist. But all that changed on October 10th, 2002 when she met the love of her life. Her dreams diverged and after marrying her high school sweetheart and having two beautiful children, she realized she missed her creative side.

Growing up alongside the Harry Potter series, Candace found herself missing the epicosity of a story that pulls you in and won’t let you go. In 2009, she began dreaming up characters that would mold her first novel. Through lunch breaks and late nights, after putting her kids to bed, she built a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. She found her calling in life and knew this was more than dancing could’ve ever meant to her.

Once complete in 2010, she began the grueling process of finding a publisher. With relentless determination, she was finally able to realize her dream in December of 2011 when 48fourteen offered her a publishing contract. With a HUGE yes and a happy dance, she now continues her Trilogy

Interview orange:black

TRC: Hi Candace and welcome to The Reading Café.  Congratulations on the release of BORN IN FLAMES.

Candace: Thank you for having me!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information.  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Candace: I am a stay-at-home mom to two little ones-Logan (my six-year-old) and Scarlett (my two-year-old). They make the world go round. [Symbol] I love music, art, dancing, laughing, good food, scary movies, midnight premiers, lace, Pinterest, Tobuscus, 30 Seconds to Mars…typical normal stuff I suppose. Oh, and I own a pair of Heely’s that I love to roll around in and have a fetish with dying my hair. That’s me in a nutshell.

Born in FlamesTRC: BORN IN FLAMES is your first novel in your trilogy.  Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

Candace: Born in Flames is a fast-paced fantasy that will catapult you into a world where you race against time to save the fate of two realms and an impending prophecy promising death. Aurora Megalos is the main character who discovers that she is not only a part of this prophecy, but part dragon as well. It is the beginning chapter of her journey to becoming the Progeny and fulfilling her destiny of defeating an ultimate evil.

TRC: What or who is the inspiration behind BORN IN FLAMES and your leading character Aurora Megalos?

Candace: I’ve always loved anything mythical and magical. When I first thought up the idea, I wanted to create something original. I had a strong love for dragons and one day an idea just popped into my head. Why not make a modernized story about a girl who can shape shift into a dragon? Thusly, Born in Flames was…born. 😉

embracing the flamesTRC: Embracing the Flames is the second storyline in the series.  Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Candace: Embracing the Flames follows Aurora as she comes into her powers and finds out what it really means to be the Progeny. Her Arch Enemy Zordon has gathered his army and is seeking the Stone of Immortality; a stone that will determine the fate of the two realms. She will be tested, injured, and pushed to the limit. Lives will be lost, love will be found, and most importantly, a battle will begin.

TRC: What difficulties or challenges have you faced getting your book to publication?

Candace: I’ve been pretty lucky actually. I queried for a few months before I received a few requests to read my manuscript in full. 48fourteen was one of them. They offered me the contract first. I went with them because I was already previously considering self-publishing to join the ebook community which is what 48fourteen promotes. But with all that aside, I did also receive rejections along the way. Between 20 and 30 I think. It’s all a part of the process.

TRC: Which actors and models do you believe would best represent the characters in your storylines?

Born in Flames (cast)

Candace: I’ve always envisioned Hayley Williams (lead singer of Paramore) as Aurora. For Fenn, it’d have to be Logan Lermon (from Percy Jackson) and Alexis would have to be Lyndsy Fonseca. Pretty stellar cast I’d say!

TRC: If you could be any supernatural being (shifter or otherwise) which would you chose and why?

Candace: Hmmm…that’s a hard one. Each one comes with a price so really it’s what are you willing to sacrifice? I’d have to go with being a shifter like Sam from True Blood. I love that he can change into any animal he sees. It would be freeing and convenient.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Candace: I’m not really sure because I haven’t read too many opinions concerning me. Perception is perception. You can’t really change what people think about you. I try not to worry about those things though. It would drive a person nuts to sit and wonder what everyone else thought about them. 😉

TRC: If you could change something about yourself personal or professional, what would it be and why?

Candace: I would spend more time writing and less time surfing Pinterest and Facebook. I am in serious need of self-discipline! 😉

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

Candace: I would have to go with my husband. He is my rock. We have been together since I was 15 and he was 16, so we basically grew up together. Everything I do, I do with him in mind. He is my best friend and pushes me to be a better person and succeed in my dreams and I know that I will always have him in my corner.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Candace: I think about my husband and then my best friend Sonya. He really is my best friend. He knows what to say, how to calm me down or lift me up. He is wonderful and patient. And if he is working, then Sonya is always second. She is the bestest bestie.

TRC: Is there a question that you would like to be asked in an interview, but nobody has asked? If so, ask away!

Candace: Any that were on my list, you have taken care of. You are fantastic!

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Candace: 1. Travel outside of the US. 2. Become a bestseller. 3. Hold my novels in paperback. 4. Move into our first house. 5. Publish at least 10 to 20 novels.

TRC: What are your thoughts on book reviews-good or bad?

Candace: I like reviews, good and bad, so long as they aren’t cruel. I believe we all have a right to our own opinions and what may work for one person, may not for the other. This goes for every author. I take criticism and learn from it. The moment you stop learning, what is there to live for? Plus, we can’t please everyone.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Born in Flames collage

Candace: From the Embers, which is the final chapter in the trilogy. It’s almost complete and then it will be given my read-through and then sent to my publisher. I’m hoping to be finished by the end of March, so long as there isn’t any interruptions.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Candace: I am looking for Street Team members. There is a tab on my blog for it. If anyone is interested, they can send me an email to go over the details. I have little experience with it so if anyone has any suggestions, they are more than welcome!

BORN in FLAMES by Candace Knoebel-a review

Born in Flames

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

BORN IN FLAMES by Candace Knoebel is the first book of an exciting new YA trilogy! Aurora Megalos is secreted away to an alternative world for her protection. She remembers nothing of her existence before she turns up on her new foster mother’s doorstep. Arriving the same day is her new foster brother Fenn, who also remembers nothing of his past. They stick together to survive and vow to discover their birth parents and unravel the mystery of their pasts. They become roommates after they grow up to save money for their quest, but their pasts confront them first!!

A seer, a fortune teller, a strange pendant and tales of dragons all bring new insights into their past existence in a world full of magic. Aurora is central to a prophecy in a far off universe and there are some who do not want the prophecy fulfilled. Others will do anything to help, but Fenn and Aurora must decide whom they can trust. They have a choice! They can work to find the keys to return to their magical land, which might be full of danger and one that they don’t remember or they can stay in our realm. The portal to their world is found in Hawaii, so that is a pretty great place to be stuck!!

BORN IN FLAMES is an engaging story, which only promises to get better. Fenn and Aurora discover that they are soul mates and that he was sent here as her protector. I like how they began as friends and their relationship developed other time. Their souls slowly enmeshed with each other. That is how I see true soul mates. Also, he gains his memory back first and knows that she needs to decide her fate on her own. The enemy would be able to track her location through him! She is so hurt when he leaves at first, but she realizes that he did it out of love. They are an amazing couple, one person is not stronger, but they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. There are some laughs too!! Some “help” arrives and her antics in this new world are hilarious!! This is a story that is only going to get better with time!! There is romance, a world of magic, dragons and a terrible villain!! I can’t wait until the next book!!

No judgments. No limits. No shame.

Cassie Robichaud’s life is filled with regret and loneliness after the sudden death of her husband. She waits tables at the rundown Café Rose in New Orleans, and every night she heads home to her solitary one-bedroom apartment. But when she discovers a notebook left behind by a mysterious woman at the café, Cassie’s world is forever changed. The notebook’s stunningly explicit confessions shock and fascinate Cassie, and eventually lead her to S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T, an underground society dedicated to helping women realize their wildest, most intimate sexual fantasies. Cassie soon immerses herself in an electrifying journey through a series of ten rapturous fantasies with gorgeous men who awaken and satisfy her like never before. As she is set free from her inhibitions, she discovers a new confidence that transforms her, giving her the courage to live passionately. Equal parts enticing, liberating and emotionally powerful, S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T is a world where fantasy becomes reality

REVIEW: S.E.C.R.E.T. is the first storyline in L.Marie Adeline’s new series focusing on a secret club for women only. The premise is such that experienced women who have previously gone through the ten-step sexual program will mentor one new recruit per year. The recruits are women who are deemed ‘worthy’ of the S.E.C.R.E.T society.

S.E.C.R.E.T. is an acronym Safe, Erotic, Compelling, Romantic, Ecstatic and Transformative. The club is run by women for women who want to experience their sexual fantasies without fear of retribution or intimidation. Each step requires their acceptance and the sexual fantasy must be played out to its end. And for each successful conclusion, the women are ‘awarded’ a gold charm symbolizing another step in their sexual transformation and liberation.

The reader is taken on one woman’s journey through S.E.C.R.E.T.’s ten step program -35 year old widow Cassie Robichaud-as she struggles with her daily life. Accepting an offer to join S.E.C.R.E.T, Cassie endeavors to step outside of her comfort zone to experience the fantasies she has only ever dreamt of. We watch as each ‘step’ brings Cassie closer to the realization that there is more to life than the daily grind.

The storyline had promise but fell flat in many areas. First and foremost, it has been described as a more mature Fifty Shades-but it does not come close to being in the same category or similar premise. The sex scenes are stilted and almost robotic; too quick to come to fruition; and the detail is limited. The sexual fantasy scenarios could have been played up with more energy, more descriptive narration and more steam. In the end, I was left ‘unfulfilled’. Another area not addressed are the men involved in the sexual fantasies. There is never any explanation as to ‘how’ these men became involved with S.E.C.R.E.T. and in most cases we do not know anything about their characters. They are simply the epitome of a fantasy lover and a means to an orgasm. There are two willing men who have the potential for something more permanent, but rules of the ‘club’ state that once a relationship is established off-side, the woman is forbidden to continue on her sexual journey with S.E.C.R.E.T.

The character of Cassis is searching for something in her life, and when she finally figures out who and what she wants, she is blind sided and suffers terrible heart ache at the expense of someone with whom she has fallen in love. The town of New Orleans is the setting for S.E.C.R.E.T. and many of Cassie’s acquaintances are part of the club. She will meet up with the men and women who create her fantasy but in the end, it is Cassie who must make the decision about whom and what she wants.

S.E.C.R.E.T. is an interesting storyline that failed to reach its potential. I can only hope that the author L.Marie Adeline (not her real name) brings in a more descriptive storyline for the second instalment because the first book barely scratched the surface of what could have been a great story.

OFF HER GAME Tour Banner

Guest Post-White and Aqua

I tend to browse Pinterest (as many romance writers that I follow do) for hot men. I have a board dedicated to it. But I term it research. I have a hockey team in Off Her Game, and I needed inspiration. I tell you what… There’s a LOT of inspiration on Pinterest.

Casting that group of men was probably the most fun I’ve had in a long time. I wanted a group of guys that were as different and diverse from each other, but still managed to work together as a team. I started with Darren, and gave him his best friend Cody, blond white guy from Minnesota. But the rest of the team cast themselves. Gavin, the guy from the huge Italian family, son of Italian immigrants, and Misha, my Russian love. If he was real… *sigh*

I love them all. This is why I planned sequels, because these guys kinda took over and were all demandy about getting their story.
Anyway, I’m getting carried away. I wanted a cast of men that represented a wide variety of ethnicities.

I look at my favorite hockey team, the Dallas Stars. There are Canadians, Swedes… Among the Americans, there’s Hispanics and African-Americans on the team, and there’s a great diversity there that I don’t think every sport can manage.

Not saying they don’t, but it seems like hockey appeals to a wider mass of people. Sure, in America, football reigns. There’s no denying that. Especially in Texas. I see it every day.

I love hockey. I adore it. So, I suppose in my small way, this book is meant to show that love. I wanted people to know what it was about the sport that attracted me to it. But then those characters became alive, and now they’re my favorite part about the book.

OFF HER GAME
by Suzan Butler

Penalty Number One: Men
Making time for men and relationships doesn’t fit into Valerie Chase’s game plan. This crisis-counselor-turned-cocktail-waitress knows the score—Men are a distraction. But when a certain hockey player tempts her wild side, part of her wants to indulge in a little harmless fun.

Penalty Number Two: Desire
As the star center for the Texas Highlanders, Darren Moran’s good looks and deadly determination make him a fan favorite. But after the previous season’s disaster, the last thing he needs is to let some woman crawl under his skin. But… Valerie is different. She brings out the best in him—both on and off the ice—and he’s not about to lose her.

Penalty Number Three: Passion
When the game moves to the next level, Darren and Val have got to call timeout. An unplanned romance is a game-thrower, a sinful temptation that neither of them can afford. After all, there’s no way to have order in matters of the heart when the penalties tally up to an ejection from the game.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 25, 2013

Penalty Number One: Men

Making time for men and relationships doesn’t fit into former social worker Valerie Chase’s game plan. This crisis counselor turned cocktail waitress knows the score, though. Part of her would love to indulge in a little side action, especially when a certain hunky hockey player demands attention, but she’s far too responsible to let herself get wild and crazy.

Penalty Number Two: Desire

Darren Moran’s good lucks and deadly determination make him a fan favorite. He‘s always wanted to play hockey and does it well. After the last season’s disaster, the last thing he needs is to let some woman crawl under his skin and distract him. But… Valerie is different. She’s his good luck charm. She makes him play the best he’s ever played and he’s not about to lose her, even if it means incurring penalties by encroaching on Valerie’s personal life.

Penalty Number Three: Passion

When the two take the game to the next level, Val’s got to call a timeout. An unplanned romance is a game-thrower, a sinful temptation that neither of them can afford. After all, there’s no way to have order in matters of the heart when the penalties tally up to an ejection from the game

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: OFF HER GAME is the first storyline in Suzan Butler’s new Texas Highlanders Ice Hockey series focusing on the men who play professional hockey and the women they love. Suzan also includes a variety of secondary characters including team owners, bar managers, ex-wives and lovers as well as a multitude of family members, patrons and fans.

Off Her Game focuses on Valerie Chase, a part time waitress and full time counselor at a shelter for at-risk teens. But when she is suddenly laid off from her counseling job due to cut-backs, Val is at risk to lose everything when money becomes tight. And to complicate matters, she is attracted to professional hockey player Darren Moran, whose divorce just became final. Val isn’t in the mood to become Darren’s rebound relationship but she continues to send mixed signals even once their relationship passes friendship to lovers.

I did have one complaint in this particular storyline and that was the mixed signals Valerie continued to give-off. One moment she was hot and the next she was cold-all within a matter of minutes. She would refuse Darren’s advances then she would be upset when he refused to play the game. The reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of one character’s inability to acknowledge her true feelings and in doing so amped up my anxiety level. At one point I hoped Darren dumped her a** for good but Darren was a man in love and believed Val was his personal good luck charm both on and off the ice.

If you are a fan of hard-hitting sports heroes and beautiful heroines, Off Her Game is the perfect match. There is a potential for several more storylines especially for one bar owner in particular. Let’s hope everyone gets the HEA they deserve.
