When Strangers In The Night

He lives in the shadows. As the mysterious masked avenger known as the Ghost of St. Giles, Godric St. John’s only goal is to protect the innocent of London. Until the night he confronts a fearless young lady pointing a pistol at his head—and realizes she is his wife.

Become Lovers…

Lady Margaret Reading has vowed to kill the Ghost of St. Giles—the man who murdered her one true love. Returning to London, and to the man she hasn’t seen since their wedding day, Margaret does not recognize the man behind the mask. Fierce, commanding, and dangerous, the notorious Ghost of St. Giles is everything she feared he would be—and so much more.

Desire Is The Ultimate Danger

When passion flares, these two intimate strangers can’t keep from revealing more of themselves than they had ever planned. But when Margaret learns the truth—that the Ghost is her husband—the game is up and the players must surrender…to the temptation that could destroy them both.

REVIEW: Lord of Darkness is the fifth storyline in Elizabeth Hoyt’s historical romance Maiden Lane series and although I highly recommend reading in order, Lord of Darkness can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. The characters were first introduced in book one Wicked Intentions and their storyline has been building in each successive novel. The premise focuses on Lady Margaret Reading (who two years earlier) was forced into a marriage of convenience to Godric St. John when, her lover and father of her unborn child, was murdered by the Ghost of St. Giles. Fast-forward two years, Margaret lost her child within days of her wedding to Godric and has not seen the man in the ensuing years. But the time has come when Margaret wants a child and the only man available is her forgotten husband who sits alone pining for his long dead first wife.

There are several secondary characters throughout the storyline and many had been introduced in previous books. But Elizabeth brings together several additional members from both sides of the family as well as friends and neighbors with stories yet to be told. The secretive Ghost of St. Giles plays a prominent role throughout and it is Margaret’s amazing acceptance of his true identity that leads her to believe that she has been mistaken about her husband’s intentions all along.

Again, throughout the building of their relationship, Margaret and Godric must overcome the ghosts from each of their pasts. Margaret has for so long kept her deceased lover on a pedestal that no man could possibly do any better and the memory of Godric’s long suffering dead wife has forced the man into a secret life in the dark streets saving women and children from unseen evil. As the relationship between Margaret and Godric builds, so too does the danger for Godric as he forces himself to discover the truth behind the murder of Margaret’s first love and in doing so, hopes to open Margaret’s heart to the possibility that there is more to their relationship than a marriage of convenience.

I had a couple issues of spelling and context in the novel. At one point, names are interchanged and in doing so, Margaret is married to her brother 😉 These are issues of editing and proof reading that should have been caught.

Overall, Lord of Darkness is a sweet, wonderful romantic storyline where you know the two lead characters are right for each other. When the ghosts from the past keep Margaret and Godric from opening their hearts and their minds to the possibility that love can be found a second time around the sexual tension between the couple is both welcome and acknowledged. There was never any doubt that Margaret and Godric were meant to fall in love.

WOLF WITH BENEFITS (Pride Series #8) by Shelly Laurenston

Wolf With Benefits

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 26, 2013

Ricky Lee has no plans of getting serious about anyone, but he will protect Toni Jean-Louis Parker. Not just because he’s been hired to do so, but because it’s the right thing to do. And if that means traveling around the country with one complicated She-jackal, dealing with chocolate-eating wild dogs, instigating trouble between his brothers, and having the most amazing sex he’s ever had…well, who said his job didn’t have perks?

Toni doesn’t know how she keeps getting herself into these situations. But even she has to admit there’s something about Ricky Lee Reed that she finds kind of interesting…and downright sexy. Now they just have to survive long enough to figure out if what they have is worth fighting for…

***********************

REVIEW: Shelly Laurenston (aka G.A.Aiken) is one of my all-time favorite authors. Shelly’s world of shifters, whether it be pride and pack or dragon, is a world filled with humor. The ease with which Shelly’s characters and storylines pull you into the book is something every author should aspire to. I have a habit of re-reading novels that I enjoy, but if I am feeling a little down, one of Shelly’s books is one of the first books I head to –first.

Wolf With Benefits is one of those storylines where Shelly brings together many of her characters from previous storylines. And if you are a fan of the Pride and Pack series, you will be pleased to know that several characters from the Pack series make a return cameo. Our heroine is the daughter of Jackie the Jackal –yes you are reading that correctly-Jackie the Jackal whom we first met in the anthology WHEN HE WAS BAD in the short story Miss Congeniality !!

Toni’s believes her family of ten siblings need her to help stay organized and in a sense they do. But what Toni discovers is that her talents at organization stand her in good stead with the Van Holtz organization who offer her a prime position within the company. Wolf With Benefits follows Toni as she endeavors to cope with a family of ten siblings-all jackals- all prodigies in their own rights, and the knowledge that her one and only specialty leaves her feeling like a glorified babysitter. When she is asked to go to Russia to broker a deal with the Russian Shifter Hockey league, Toni learns that dealing with the Russians is not like dealing with her family back home- and what is happening back home is something even Toni would have a hard time comprehending.

Ricky and Toni’s relationship is slow to build, although they do meet within the first few pages of the book. Ricky is persistent and garnering a position as security for Toni allows Ricky more one on one private time that will eventually lead to the one thing both of them had not been looking for-a mate. And in true Laurenston style, the families, the wild-dogs, the lions and the wolves will become involved when one of the Reed boys looks like he has fallen in love with a she-jackal. We witness the OCD antics of Bo Novikov who discovers that a family of child prodigies is a little more than he can handle: Blayne Thorpe stunned that not everyone is pleased with her hyper rantings: and a family of wild-dogs whose own child prodigy is making a name for himself.

There are several secondary storylines building that will involve Dee Ann Smith, The Unit and a new member to the team whose shifter heritage is a surprise to everyone but a sexy, honey loving bear. And Shelly pulls no punches when a family member becomes a threat. Due justice will be served-not now-but in the future.

WOLF WITH BENEFITS is another wonderfully sexy and well-written storyline from the mind of Shelly Laurenston. If you are a fan of shifters and humor, Shelly’s Pride series is a definite must read. Shelly pulls the reader into the storyline and makes you feel like part of the pack , or pride, or clan or ….family.

If you are not familiar with the series, I suggest you start with the Pack series. Many of the characters from the Pack series have cameos in Wolf With Benefits.

An Interview with Mindee Arnett

An Interview with Mindee Arnett

Interview blue:black

mindeeThe Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Mindee Arnett our guest today. She is here today to discuss her new book, The Nightmare Affair, (our review below this post), which was just  released this past Tuesday.

Here is a snippet about Mindee:
Mindee Arnett lives on a horse farm in Ohio with her husband, two kids, a couple of dogs, and an inappropriate number of cats. She’s addicted to jumping horses and telling tales of magic, the macabre, and outer space. She has far more dreams than nightmares.

Now let us meet Mindee.

Hi Mindee.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Mindee: Thanks so much for having me. I’m happy to participate.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Mindee: Sure. I’m a Whedonite, Whovian, and all around fangirl, although I’ve never done any real cosplay, I’m ashamed to say. I’m also a horse nut and animal lover.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Mindee: I’ve always been interested in storytelling, for sure. As a child, I would make up very elaborate and plot-driven stories for my toys. My She-ra dolls would battle monstrous villains and fall in love with He-man or Bow. My Breyer Horses were often captured by evil horse wranglers who would tie them up, only to have the other horses come rescue them. Very epic stuff here, I’m telling you.

My interest in writing grew naturally out of my love of reading. My mother is a voracious reader and so is my sister, and they were a huge influence on me as a young reader.

But the idea of writing my own stories down didn’t occur to me until the 6th grade when my teacher assigned us a weekly story assignment. She would give us writing prompts and then turn us loose. This was an eye-opener for me. A real life changer. I owe her a huge debt.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Mindee: I’m not very particular about time or place. With my busy life style—full time (non-writing) career, kids, husband, animals—I have to be able to write anywhere and anytime I have available. The only process I follow is that I have to do a “warm-up” before starting. I always read/review the previous day’s writing and make any edits that occur to me. This warm-up gets me in writer mode and helps me remember the tone and voice that I’m going for in a particular scene. Unfortunately, this means that starting a brand new story is always the hardest for me. It takes me forever because I have to do it cold, but I get there eventually.

TRC: Is The Nightmare Affair your first novel? Can you please describe your reactions when you found out your book was going to be published?

Mindee: The Nightmare Affair is actually my fourth completed novel. And by completed, I mean beginning-middle-end. My previous novels were complete in this sense, but none of them went through the same rigorous editing/revising that Nightmare did.

My reaction when I first found out was complete and utter joy and complete and utter disbelief. To this day, I’m still experiencing that. I’m so happy it’s happening, but it all seems unbelievable. Totally surreal.

TRC: The Nightmare Affair is the first book in your The Arkwell Academy Series.  Can you please tell us how you come up with the idea of this series?

Mindee: The series evolved naturally through the events of the first book, but I can’t talk about that much for fear of spoilers. I will say that I wanted to write a mystery/detective series set in a fantasy world. A lot of The Nightmare Affair was inspired by my love of Veronica Mars. Dusty is a little like a fantasy version of that character, only she’s way more of a wannabe than Veronica.

the nightmare affair
TRC:
Would you please tell us the premise behind The Nightmare Affair?

Mindee: 16-year-old Dusty Everhart is a Nightmare who must identify a murderer at her magical high school by following clues in her crush’s dreams.

Links to order The Nightmare Affair:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository/ Kobo

TRC: The Arkwell Academy is YA Contemporary Fantasy. What exactly is Contemporary Fantasy?

Mindee: I consider a contemporary fantasy to be one set in the modern world but which takes place primarily within a separate fantasy world. So it’s a world within a world scenario. Like Harry Potter, for instance. Harry is set in the modern world, but the wizarding world is isolated from it. The modern world only serves as a surrounding frame. This is also true of The Nightmare Affair. The modern world surrounds Dusty’s world and it has an influence on it, but Arkwell is complete fantasy. The only actual human in the story is Eli. The rest are all magical creatures.

TRC: You also have another YA series due in 2014, Avalon (formerly Finding Eden) is the first book in this Sci-Fi Thriller series.  Can you please tell us the premise of this series?

Mindee: Avalon is about a teen mercenary, Jeth Seagrave, who is leader of a group of talented thieves, and who find his life on the line when he takes on a high risk job for his crime lord employer in order to earn a way out of the life for him and his sister. It was pitched as Firefly meets White Cat.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Mindee: I recently turned in the first draft of book two of The Arkwell Academy series as well as edits for Avalon. I’m now working on an Avalon prequel right now and hope to start book two in that series soon.

TRC: What books, authors or people in your life have influenced your writing?

Mindee: I’m a huge fan of both Stephen King and J.K. Rowling. But one of the authors who influenced me most is Jennifer Roberson. I adore her Cheysuli Chronicles series as well as her Sword Dancer series.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Mindee: Again, thanks for having me! (And I mean that in a totally non-ghoulish kind of way)

The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett – a Review

The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett – a Review

the nightmare affair

Description:
Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare.

Literally.

Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy, is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.

Then Eli’s dream comes true.

Now Dusty has to follow the clues—both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target

Review:

The Nightmare Affair is Mindee Arnett’s first YA Fantasy Novel.  The base of the story takes place at Arkwell Academy, a school for the magickind.  Our heroine, Dusty, is 16 years old, and has inherited from her mother the ability to create nightmares into a person’s dreams.

Dusty is just started learning this, and begins to practice on high school hunk, Eli, when he is asleep dreaming, when something terribly goes wrong.  The dream turns into a real murder that takes place at the school, with one of the students murdered.  Dusty is then told that she is more then a Nightmare.  She is now a Dream-seer, someone who can see the future.  The heads of the school arrange for Eli to be transferred to the school, as Dusty and Eli must work the dreams together.  Eli is not thrilled to be forced to change schools, as he does not have any magic, just tied to Dusty as part of her Dream-seer visions.

Both of them avoid each other as much as possible, until they begin to become more earnest in resolving this murder, as another one happens.  Slowly, and I mean very slowly, you can see a romance building up between them, but first they try to be friends.  Arnett has created some good characters in Dusty, Eli, Selene (Dusty’s best friend), and Paul (Dusty’s possible boyfriend, before Eli); not to mention all the teachers teaching the students the magic, and some of the students themselves.

I found the story interesting, with the mystery involved as to who the murderer was.  Did Dusty’s Mother have anything to do with the murders?  Will Dusty and Eli realize they are meant for each other besides sharing dreams?  What happens to Paul?

I enjoyed the magic stuff, and there was a lot of danger and tense moments.  I thought it was a light read with humor, and at the same time, kind of scary.  A few times I did think some things were a bit silly or childish, but overall I enjoyed this story, as it was different, and a fast fun read.  I will not spoil things, as there are a number of twists, surprises & violence, as well as a very exciting ending.

No Turning Back by HelenKay Dimon-a review

NO TURNING BACK by HelenKay Dimon-a review

no turning backABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 19, 2013

Amazon/ Barnes and Noble /

The Hanover brothers inherited some bad behavior from their con artist father. Now three strong women will make honest men out of them.

After ten years in the Army and four overseas deployments, Declan Hanover is ready for life away from a military base. Sweetwater, Oregon, a sleepy coastal town, seems like the perfect place to start over. His plan is to work out a deal with his brothers and the bank to let him keep the estate they’ve inherited, Shadow Hill. But he wasn’t prepared for Leah Baron, whose family lost everything to his father’s cons—including the house Declan intends to make his own…

Leah thinks Declan is just like his conman father. He possesses a bad boy charm that makes her heart pound, but that doesn’t mean she can trust him. All she wants is to get close to him so she can get her house back. But Declan has other ideas. He doesn’t mind being in close proximity to Leah—as long as it’s in the bedroom…

*******************

Review: The infamous ‘they’ say you can never forget the past or go home again, but in the small town of Sweetwater one man-Marc Baron-refuses to let go.

Charlie Hanover was a con artist who all but destroyed the small town of Sweetwater and in his wake left three sons who must now deal with the aftermath of their father’s con. Fast forward twenty years, and the now three adult men, have returned to claim their grandmother’s estate-only the house once belonged to Marc Baron. And Marc is determined to seek retribution and revenge for the sins of the father.

Leah Baron has grown up with the knowledge that Charlie Hanover destroyed her parent’s marriage and left most of the town bankrupt and destitute. Now it is her job to rebuild the town of Sweetwater. But Leah’s plans go awry when the Hanover men return and want to start their lives over in the house once owned by her father.

Leah and Declan were children when Charlie conned an entire town but Leah’s perception of Declan and his brothers has been tainted by her father’s need for vengeance. When Declan returns, Leah makes it her mission to run the brothers out of town, hoping to reclaim some of her father’s dignity in the process. But as Declan and Leah begin to research the documents and files, they will discover that the truth about the past has been tainted by revenge, betrayal, greed, lies and lust and, not everyone who claims to be-is a victim.

I am not sure how to explain my feelings about this particular storyline. I had a very difficult time accepting the heroine’s anger and attitude especially when she acknowledges that the Hanover sons are not responsible for their father’s betrayal, yet Leah Baron persists for a good portion of the storyline that Declan and his brothers are in the wrong and should return the family home. Another difficulty I had was that one man-Marc Baron-had the ability to sway several generations in the town of Sweetwater and sway law enforcement that the sons of Charlie Hanover were guilty by association and therefore should be held accountable for their father’s con. The Hanover sons are taunted, threatened and ignored yet most of the town does not blame the sons. There is a bit of a conundrum –no one is held accountable for the threats and we do not know who is responsible.

There are several secondary storylines building that ensure each Hanover brother has a story to tell. But it is the relationship between Leah and Declan that amped up my anxiety. The write up about the book states ‘fun, new contemporary romance’ but I did not find the fun in any of the book. The premise surrounds revenge, betrayal, lies and manipulation yet, once the truth is finally revealed, I still could not find the humor at any stage of the story. There is sex and some romance, mystery and revelation: the storyline is not dark or horrific but I must have missed something because I did not find anything funny or humorous.

The storyline felt choppy whenever Declan and Leah were together but flowed smoothly when the Hanover brothers had their stories to tell. If you are looking for a contemporary story with a little bit of sex, a little bit of romance and a little bit of mystery- NO LOOKING BACK- is the story for you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Website

HelenKay Dimon is an award-winning author of more than a dozen novels and novellas. Her first single title, Your Mouth Drives Me Crazy, was excerpted in Cosmopolitan magazine in August ’07 and spotlighted at E! Online. She made Cosmopolitan a second time in December 2009 with her novella “It’s Hotter At Christmas” from the Kissing Santa Claus anthology. Her books also have been published by Doubleday Book Club and Rhapsody Book Club and translated into several languages.

HelenKay’s road to publication took a few turns. She’s not one of those authors who burst out of the womb with a notepad in one hand and a pen in the other. She didn’t know she wanted to write until much later in life. She tried international travel and journalism and enjoyed careers in politics and law first. After graduating from Syracuse University with a double major in newspaper journalism and political science, she landed in Washington, D.C. A few years as a legislative assistant to a member of the House of Representatives convinced her law school might be a good idea. Three years at Wake Forest University and one bar exam later and HelenKay moved back to the D.C. metro area as a lawyer. General civil litigation gave way to a specialty in family law and an eventual partnership in a highly respected boutique firm.

After twelve years as a divorce lawyer specializing in unhappy endings, HelenKay now writes romance for a living. The sudden career change resulted from her husband getting one of those “can’t turn it down” job offers. With only a few months’ notice, his work took the family from Maryland to their current home in California. So, instead of days filled with court, clients and a great deal of whining and complaining, HelenKay now writes for a living. She thinks of herself as a “recovering lawyer” and is grateful every day for the ability to write full time.

Lemon Cupcake

The heroines of my books get to have my dream careers. Baking is my hobby when I have the time (and can afford the calories!)I’m never going to own my own bakery, but I get to live the life of a baker though Kat Thayne, the heroine in THE PROPOSITION, Book One of The Plus One Chronicles. In the book, Kat walks away from her job as a chemist in her family’s pharmaceutical company to follow her dream of owning her own bakery.

Kat has no interest in romance. But when the sizzling hot Sloane Michaels, an ex-Ultimate Fighter and a self-made billionaire makes her a proposition, she can’t refuse.

Now maybe you’re wondering what could possibly attract Sloane to Kat?

Lemon cupcakes!

Okay it’s a lot more than lemon cupcakes, but the cupcakes do play a part as you can see from this scene clip where Kat brings Sloane some cupcakes as a gift:

Kat lost her breath at his demand. Felt her body soften and a languid need spread. His confidence, his words…it was so sexy. The way he savored the cupcake hit her lust center too. He licked the fork, long leisurely swipes of his tongue as he relished every crumb… She had to drop her gaze. Tried to focus on eating a bite of her cupcake.

“Damn, woman, that is good. There’s a pop of creamy lemon.”

Warmth flooded her, and she looked up. “It’s lemon curd. Mine has a fudge filling.”

He reached his fork across the table and sank it into her chocolate dessert. Slowly put it in his mouth, closed his eyes in evident delight. “Nice.” He dipped his fork back into his. “But I like lemon better.”

See? Sloane takes his cupcakes very seriously!

Making Kat a baker gave me an excuse to bake. I took a week off from writing right before Christmas and went on a baking marathon. I tested a couple lemon cupcake recipes, because I wanted only the best for Sloane. The one I liked best is this one, although it is fairly complicated: (source for cupcake recipe here http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2009/08/30/lemon-limoncello-cupcakes/)

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 ounces (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons lemoncello liqueur
½ cup buttermilk
¼ cup lemon juice
Zest of one lemon

For the lemon curd:

Zest of 2 lemons
½ cup lemon juice
¼ cup granulated sugar, or more if lemons are very tart
1 egg + 1 egg yolk

For the cream cheese lemoncello frosting:

2 ounces (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 tablespoon lemoncello
2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place rack in center of oven.
For the cupcakes:

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a larger bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter, cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until light and creamy—about 2 to 3 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the lemoncello and beat another minute. On low speed, alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Finish by adding the lemon juice and zest on low speed until just incorporated. Divide evenly between 12 muffin tins. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Note that the cupcakes will have a flat top done (at least mine did).

The lemon curd:

In a heavy medium sauce pan, stir together the lemon zest, juice and sugar and bring to a simmer over medium heat. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and egg yolk. Slowly whisk the lemon mixture into them to temper the eggs. Scrape the mixture back into the saucepan and place over medium heat, whisking until it thickens, about five minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

Prepare the frosting:

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and cream cheese on medium speed until light and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the lemoncello and beat for an additional minute. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

Assemble the cupcakes:

Remove cupcakes from pan, and place a flat surface. I used a melon baller to scoop out a hole in the top-center of each cupcake. Fill the cavity with lemon curd. Then fit a pastry bag with a star tip, fill it with the frosting and pipe it onto each cupcake.

Or you could go to a bakery and buy cupcakes, or even better, get the book THE PROPOSITION and live the life of a baker seduced by a sexy-hot billionaire through Kat!

REVIEW: THE PROPOSITION is the first storyline in Jennifer Lyon’s AMAZING new PLUS ONE CHRONICLES focusing on Sloane Michaels and Kat Thayne. As the series suggests, Sloane is a man looking for a ‘plus one’. Not one for any permanent or serious relationships, Sloane offers a proposition to bakery owner Kat Thayne-to be his ‘plus-one’ for both personal and public affairs. But Kat suffers with PTSD and has a difficult time letting go. When her past catches up with her, Sloane offers more than a chance at being his ‘plus-one’ –he offers her his protection as well as teaching her ways to face her demons-head on.

The relationship between Sloane and Kat begins as a proposition between two people whose paths had crossed years before, although our heroine is not aware of Sloane’s prior existence. With a past mired in secrets and pain Kat is unprepared for the feelings and emotions unlocked by Sloane’s presence in her life. He is everywhere and everything she needs and wants-although she doesn’t know it –yet.

The reader is taken on one woman’s journey as she fights the demons from her past, a dysfunctional family unit that tries to control and manipulate her life and, a new man who could very well be the promise to her future.

But Sloane has a secret, mired in guilt and shame, and in The Proposition we are privy to the barest amount of information. Perhaps Kat is the ticket to his redemption? And is Kat the one woman to thaw the frozen heart of a man who believes he deserves to be punished for a past mistake?

THE PROPOSITION is an amazing and breathtaking storyline. I was prepared for another ‘copy cat’ series but found I could not stop reading until the very end. I was pulled in, sucked under and discovered that I want a man like Sloane in my life. What woman doesn’t want a protector like Sloane Michaels and all of his bada**  heartbreaking goodness!! Jennifer Lyon has found her niche with the Plus One Chronicles.

Soulbound

Soulbound is the first book in Tessa Adams new Lone Star Witch series.

Description:
As the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter—and a member of Ipswitch’s Royal family—Xandra Morgan should be a witch of incredible power. But things don’t always turn out like you expect…

While she hasn’t lived up to her family’s expectations, Xandra has come to terms with her latent magic and made a life for herself in Austin, Texas, running a coffee shop where she makes potions of a non-magical nature. While things aren’t perfect, Xandra is happy—until she runs into powerful warlock Declan Chumomisto.

Xandra hasn’t seen Declan in years, and though she’s still overwhelmed by his power, she doesn’t trust him. And when her own powers awaken one night and lead her to the body of a woman in the woods bearing the symbol of Isis—the same one that has marked Xandra since the day she met Declan—she’s filled with a terrible suspicion, soon confirmed: the woman is connected to him.

Xandra doesn’t want to believe that Declan is capable of murder, but as the body count mounts, and Xandra’s own powers spiral out of control, she’s not sure she can trust her own instincts

Review:

Soulbound is the story of a young witch, from a powerful family of witches.  Xandra Morgan is our heroine, and as the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter, she was expected to become very powerful. However, all of her life, she has not been able to perform any magic, and is considered latent.  On her 19th birthday, when she once again failed during the family magical ceremony, she runs humiliated into the woods, where she meets our hero, Declan Chumomisto.  Declan is a powerful warlock, who uses both light and dark magic.  Xandra is drawn immediately to Declan, as he is to her.  When he takes her hand, she ends up with the mark of Isis on her palm, similar to the one Declan has. They spent the night talking, and then Xandra will not see him again for 7 years.

The story then picks up 7 years later, with Xandra living in Austin, Texas, and running her own coffee shop.  She still considers herself a magical failure, but is content where she is, living a normal life.  There is some humor where her mother and a witch whisperer continue to try to find ways to bring out her magic.  It is at this time, when Xandra goes back home to visit her family, that something awakens in her.  Her mother gives her a potion, and she later becomes violently sick; she sees and feels a violent vision of a young girl being raped and attacked in the nearby woods. Xandra runs to where senses the attack happening, and the body of the dead girl is found. The victim is discovered to have been marked with the same Seba symbol that Xandra has in her palm.

Once she goes back to Austin, she sees Declan again, and her strange ability continues. stronger then ever.  Xandra, each time she has this vision, suffers emotionally, mentally and physically. She is compelled to follow where she senses another girl in danger. Declan always seems to come to her rescue, and both do not understand what is happening.  Together, they are determined to find the cause of Xandra’s abilities, and to find the person, who has strong magical abilities to be doing this.  The chemistry between Declan and Xandra is hot, but they both refrain from going too far, until they both need each other desperately.

I enjoyed learning about Xandra’s family, and her new found friends.  Her brother Donovan, her friend Lily, and a cop named Nate, all play are big part in this story.  Declan is our hero, and a hot one, but he is still private, and I would love to learn more about him.  But the star of this book is Xandra, who is a great heroine; strong, independent, and has no qualms of speaking up.  The only thing I was not crazy about was that Xandra feels everything being done to the other girl, making these descriptive scenes very violent, and at times uncomfortable.

There is a serial killer out there, and it seems that all the victims resemble Xandra.  Who is the killer?  Why are the innocent girls being tortured? Will Xandra survive?  Is Declan to be trusted, or is he too a danger to Xandra?  Tessa Adams does resolve all the questions at the end.  However, that being said, Soulbound does leave things open for Xandra and Declan to continue the story into the next book, since we need to learn more about Xandra’s powers.

The ending is tense, filled with lots of action, excitement, and surprises. Make no mistake, this is a dark paranormal story, but it is also a great story, with some excellent characters. I love Xandra and Declan, and I will be there for the next book. Great start to this new series by Tessa Adams
