BREAKING HER RULES (Red Stone Security #6 ) by Katie Reus-a review

Breaking Her rules

ABOUT THE BOOK; Release Date April 7, 2013

Iris Tarango is a small-town girl from the wrong side of the tracks; she’s also a decorated former Marine who fought hard to become one of Red Stone Security’s most respected agents. But her perfectly ordered life is turned upside down when she’s assigned to guard the sexy, dominating tycoon she shares a secret history with. The instant Iris walks back into the billionaire’s diamond-studded orbit, the wild attraction flares between them…and her reputation, objectivity, and heart are in trouble.

After an attempt on his life, business magnate Wyatt Christiansen calls in major favors to hire Iris as his bodyguard. He knows she’s the best, though he has another motive too. He sees this as his final chance to win her heart. But when danger spins out of control, all Wyatt can think of is getting Iris out of harm’s way—even if it means losing her love in the end.

Unfortunately, the killer seems to know their every move. If Wyatt and Iris don’t figure out who put out the hit, they’ll lose more than their chance at happiness together.

************

REVIEW: BREAKING HER RULES is the sixth installment in Katie Reus’s RED STONE SECURITY series focusing on the men and women who work in high tech security and risk their lives for the people they love. Each of Katie’s storyline couples has a history and a past together and, Breaking Her Rules is no exception. Iris Tarango and Wyatt Christiansen grew up together in poverty-he with an alcoholic father and she with a single mom who refused to be tied down to any man. Life experiences make Iris and Wyatt whom they are today, but both with a military background will find them guarding and protecting each other from the bad guys as well as themselves.

Without giving away a major hook in the premise, Iris and Wyatt have known each other since they were young and unbeknownst to Iris, Wyatt has been in love with Iris since he was fifteen years old. They have always kept in contact with each other, whether on deployment, assignment or across the world, but one year earlier when Wyatt had been unable to contact Iris, his heart and his soul knew that he would never be able to live without the woman he has loved all of his life.

The storyline and their relationship becomes complicated when Red Stone Security is asked to protect Wyatt Christiansen after an attempt at his life is discovered by his staff. Wyatt ‘s business in casinos, hotels and computer software have made him a target, but with that comes the knowledge that perhaps someone from his military past is seeking retribution or revenge. Knowing Iris is employed by Red Stone Security, Wyatt specifically asked for Iris hoping to get some one of one time with the woman he loved. But things go from bad to worse, when several more attempts against Wyatt’s life leave two members of the security team dead and a distraught Wyatt when Iris is kidnapped and held for ransom.

BREAKING HER RULES is another fast paced and amazing storyline by Katie Reus. Unlike most of her previous novels in this series, there is little to no involvement with the heroes and heroines from past books. Wyatt Christiansen is a man in love, knows what he wants and will do whatever he can to ensure the woman he loves is kept safe and by his side. Iris is a strong heroine who is afraid to lose everything she has worked for throughout her life, but is willing to give love a chance with the man who literally is bound to her heart and her soul. I am a big fan of Katie’s Red Stone Security series and Breaking Her Rules is another welcome read. You can feel the need, the passion and the love as Katie writes a storyline about two people who have always known they belong together.

Down for the Count

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

About the book: Release October 1, 2012

NOTE:  The Reading Cafe will be part of Christine’s DOWN AND DIRTY Blog Tour on April 9, 2013 for the release of DOWN AND DIRTY.

Truth or dare…

When Lacey Garrity finds her groom in flagrante delicto in the reception hall closet with her bridesmaid, she’s saved by her best friend’s older brother—childhood tormentor, crush, and boxing bad boy Galen Thomas. Galen’s solution is both exciting and dangerous. What better way to forget the mess of her life than go on her honeymoon with a hot guy who can’t promise anything beyond today?

…or TKO?

Galen had been counting on Lacey’s wedding to put her out of reach—and out of his mind—once and for all, but their steamy Puerto Rican escape is testing all his boundaries. Now that Lacey’s embracing her inner bad girl, Galen is tempted to throw in the towel and claim her for himself. But with the biggest fight of his career on the line and an important business merger threatening to derail Lacey’s resolve, their romance might be down for the count before it even begins.

****************************

Review: DOWN FOR THE COUNT is the first storyline in Christine Bell’s new contemporary romance series Dare Me. This is Lacey and Galen’s story.

What do you do when you find your husband of two hours ‘doing it’ with your friend and bridesmaid in the storage closet at your wedding reception? Well if you are Lacey Garrity, you have your BFF handle things at the hall while your teen ‘crush’ whisks you away on his motorcycle to the family cottage for an evening of drinking and revelation. But when Lacey and Galen wake up in Puerto Rico, on what was supposed to be Lacey’s honeymoon, Galen is determined to help Lacey discover her inner vixen. Slightly tight laced and stoic, Lacey was never one to push the envelope, but with Galen by her side, Lacey soon learned to let go of her pent up years of frustration and family rule.

Lacey ‘s marriage can only be described as a merger. Hoping to merge two high profile legal firms, Lacey’s mother had made it her life’s ambition to ensure the man to whom Lacey would marry was of good breeding and pedigree. And to Lacey’s astonishment, her mother (aka The Admiral) refused to accept anything less than perfection. But when Lacey’s mother pointed out that even her marriage wasn’t all roses and candy, Lacey wondered if she had made the wrong decision. Hoping to give Lacey time to think, Galen leaves only to discover that Lacey is the only woman who can mend his broken heart.

The relationship between Lacey and Galen is both romantic and hot. Lacey knew Galen to be the popular boxer with women clamoring for his attention, and Galen only wanted one thing permanent in his life-Lacey. We watch as Galen gets Lacey to let go of the past and her inhibitions to discover the real woman hidden just below the ‘good girl’ façade. Galen wanted to show Lacey a good time and prove that he is the man for her.

I liked that Lacey didn’t whine about her the circumstances in her life and she was a woman willing to try something different to prove (to herself) that she was worthy of love from the right man but she did have some emotional baggage with self-esteem issues brought on by a tyrannical mother who refused to allow Lacey her independence. In this, Lacey was a means to an end for a business transaction and nothing else. And Galen with his tough exterior was the perfect man to bring Lacey’s hidden sexual kitten to the surface and allow her to discover what it was in life she really wanted-and it was Galen.

DOWN FOR THE COUNT is a fast paced, sweet storyline of betrayal, romance, fun and finding yourself in the one person you had always dreamed would one day be yours. There were a few moments where Lacey steps outside of the box and jumps into ‘vixen’ mode too fast, but overall the storyline was a fun read with the usual cast well-meaning friends, interfering mothers and the realization that your heart and soul belong to the one person who that can make you laugh and cry at the same time. There was nothing earth shattering or thought provoking in the premise, but a storyline with a little bit of heartbreak, a little bit of sex and a whole lot of romance between two people who have probably loved each other for a lifetime.

Nina Rowan/Nina Lane-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Nina Rowan/Nina Lane

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Writing as Nina Lane: a multi-published author of elegant, romantic and often raunchy erotica. She used to write novels under the name Natasha Rostova and has published stories in anthologies such as “Best Women’s Erotica” and “Erotic Travel Tales.” Her work has been translated into both German and Japanese. She loves hot, lengthy descriptions, exotic locations, and tension stretched to breaking point.

Follow Nina Lane: Website / Facebook / Goodreads /

Writing as Nina Rowan:  Originally from California, Nina Rowan holds a PhD in Art History from McGill University, Montreal, with a specialization in 19th century French and Russian art. She began writing when she was an undergraduate at UCLA and lived a dual life as a student and a pseudonymous erotica author. She has studied Indian and Southeast Asian art and film, worked as a curatorial assistant at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and traveled in India and Europe.

A librarian-at-heart, she also holds an MA in Library and Information Sciences, a course of study that renewed a deep-seated interest in folklore and fairy tales. In addition to being an eternal student, or likely because of it, Nina possesses an abiding love for research that involves dusty, old books. She also thinks popcorn should be one of the four food groups. She lives in Wisconsin with her atmospheric scientist husband and two children.

Interview yellow:black

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Nina: I’m originally from California and now live in Wisconsin (where it’s much colder!). I’m a life-long student who has spent more years in college than I would like to admit, and I have degrees in Art History and Library Sciences. I’m the mother of two young children, and I’ve always been a collector of children’s picture books which I now share with my own kids.

I love popcorn, cooking competition shows, and traveling. One of my favorite trips was a visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, where I attended a month-long writing seminar. It’s no coincidence that my heroes are half-Russian! I read mostly when I’m waiting for my son to finish his karate lessons. I still love John Cusack and follow him on Twitter. I love to bake but never do because I’d eat way too much, and I’ve recently started a work-out boot camp that is both kicking my rear end and making me feel great.

TRC: You bio states that you have a PhD in Art History with a specialization in 19th century French and Russian Art. How has your degree aided your writing career? Storyline premises and ideas?

Nina: For me art history is all about visual storytelling, so that has definitely informed my writing as opposed to my career as a whole. When studying art history, I write about things like how different artists use materials, structure, texture, lines, and subjects to tell a story. I think about why artists chose to depict certain people, objects, or moments in time, or what methods they use to portray the setting and characters. When writing and researching historical romances, I ask myself similar questions in the hopes that such details will contribute to the overall integrity of the story. Also, looking at 19th century art can definitely spark ideas, especially since a lot of my ideas start with a specific scene.

TRC: Many authors face challenges in writing or getting their books to publication. What are some of the difficulties your have faced in your writing career?

Nina: I’ve always enjoyed writing about time periods and settings that are outside the norm (ie, not 19th century British), so that’s been a bit of a challenge since those are difficult to sell in traditional publishing. I’ve also had trouble pinning myself down to a specific genre, so I think it’s taken me longer to find my “writing voice” than I would have liked. Having said that, I now have wonderful collaborators and supporters with my agent, editor, and writing partners, not to mention the Grand Central team, so that’s a testament to the fact that difficulties can lead you right where you are supposed to be.

A Study in SeductionTRC: A STUDY IN SEDUCTION (written as Nina Rowan) was your September 2012 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise of this historical romance storyline?

Amazon/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Nina: *A Study in Seduction* is a sexy Victorian romance centering on Lydia Kellaway, a brilliant mathematician, and Alexander Hall, a viscount fighting a family scandal. When Lydia challenges Alexander to a wager for a locket that contains a shattering secret, they clash in a war of resolve and hearts. Only one of them can win, but will the battle destroy their love?

TRC: Your storyline has been described as a sensual historical romance. What do you consider the differences between the usual historical romance novels and the addition of sensual to the categorization?

Nina: I think sensual historical romances are more explicit when it comes to descriptions of sexual attraction and the actual sex itself. I also think sometimes the female characters in sensual romances are more sexually experienced or in touch with their sexuality. That said, all romances center around the premise of both physical and emotional attraction, so I really think it’s just a matter of what the author chooses to emphasize or what direction serves the characters and plot the most effectively.

ArouseTRC: January 2013 saw the release of your erotic novel AROUSE: A Spiral of Bliss Novel written under the name Nina Lane. Would you please tell us something about the storyline premise?

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Click HERE for our review of AROUSE.

Nina: AROUSE is the first book in my new Spiral of Bliss series. It’s an erotic romance series, but it’s a bit different because it focuses on a married couple struggling with sudden difficulties in their blissful, lusty relationship. Professor Dean West is a brilliant scholar of medieval history, and his wife Olivia is utterly devoted to him…until she discovers that he has kept a secret from her for the duration of their marriage. The books focus on how Liv and Dean overcome mistrust and doubts, not to mention unexpected temptations, as they fight for both their love and each other.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the Spiral of Bliss series?

Nina: At least three, which will focus on Liv and Dean’s story. If readers enjoy the series, however, there are several other characters who have their own
stories to tell, and I’d be more than happy to write them down!

TRC: Where do you believe the line is drawn between erotic fictional romance vs sensually sexual storylines?

Nina: I think erotic romance has a stronger sexual “hook” — meaning that sex is a more intrinsically important aspect of a couple’s relationship. Whereas a sensual storyline may be explicit but sex is used less as a mechanism for a character’s arc and the progression of the couple’s relationship.

A Pleasure for PassionTRC: A PASSION FOR PLEASURE (Nina Rowan) is your April 2013 and second release in your Daring Hearts series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Pre-Order: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Nina: *A Passion for Pleasure* involves Sebastian Hall, the second son of the Earl of Rushton. Sebastian is a renowned, affable musician who is suddenly confronted with the loss of both his career and his inheritance. Desperate for a new purpose in life, Sebastian agrees to help his brother Darius with a clandestine task. As part of this, he seeks out Clara Winter, a widow who works at her uncle’s Museum of Automata. Clara has a desperate, heart-wrenching goal of her own, and when she realizes Sebastian can help her attain it, she makes him an offer that will change both their lives forever.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Nina: Right now I have three, but there are 5 Hall siblings who all have stories to tell!

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with family and friends or, other authors. With whom do you bounce idea and why?

Nina: I have three great critique partners (Bobbi, Melody, and Rachel) who are awesome and help me a lot with brainstorming and figuring out character arcs. My editor Selina McLemore at Grand Central is a fantastic sounding board, and she knows what will resound well with readers and what likely won’t.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Nina: Interesting question! I really just want to keep writing good books about characters and subjects that interest me. If I had to pick five specific life-related things, it would be to raise my children well and see them happily in high school and college, to be a successful writer, have traveled to places I’ve never been before, stay happy and healthy, and finally enjoy cooking as much as I do eating.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Nina: I’m working on book 3 of the Daring Hearts series, which involves the youngest Hall sibling and only sister, Talia Hall. She has forever been in love with their childhood friend James Forester, Baron Castleford, and finally she decides it’s about time he knows it!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Thanks for taking the time to interview me! I always love hearing from readers too, so anyone is free to write to me at nina@ninarowan.com

Arouse (Spiral of Bliss #1) by Nina Lane-a review

AROUSE (Spiral of Bliss #1) by Nina Lane

Arouse

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release December 24, 2012

“One day I’m going to touch you in a thousand different ways and show you how to touch me,” he said.

And he did.

Struggling with a tormented past, undergraduate Olivia Winter once led a practical but isolated life. Then she met Professor Dean West, a brilliant scholar of medieval history who melted Liv’s inhibitions and taught her the meaning of both love and erotic pleasure. But after three years of a blissful, lusty marriage, Liv and Dean now face a crisis that threatens everything they believe about each other…and sex might not be enough to save them.

***********************

REVIEW: Arouse is the first story line in Nina Lane’s new Spiral of Bliss contemporary romance series. Nina takes the reader on a journey of one couple’s spiral into a world of jealousy and betrayal, hidden secrets and the raw purity of first love. It is a story that will break your heart, shatter your dreams and fight for two people that belong together-above all else.

Dean and Olivia (Liv) have been married for three years but the day Liv asks the one thing of her husband that she had never asked before throws the couple into a vortex that widens and deepens with every hurtful word, and secrets from the past that are seen as an act of betrayal.

The ensuing story follows Dean and Liv as the tension between the couple threatens to destroy the love they have for one another. As Liv’s life slowly begins to unravel she is determined to find out why the love of her life is so adamant about not pursuing her suggestion only to discover he has hidden a secret that begins to destroy the very foundation on which their current life has been built. In the ensuing days, a breakdown in communication and the building animosity finds Liv and Dean searching for something that neither one was willing to face. Letting go is the hardest thing.

Many couples will face a time when the breakdown in communication threatens the marriage as well as the mental and physical health of the individuals. Nina Lane’s story of love and loss pulls the reader into the burgeoning chasm (of an emotional journey) that may be too large to overcome.

The story is told in three parts; first person POV in the heroine’s voice using present day and flashbacks to tell the story of Olivia and Dean’s love story and heartbreaking sorrow. Part three is written from both Liv and Dean’s POV as we are privy to Dean’s internal turmoil and dialogue and, watch as he slowly realizes that the secret that he kept may very well destroy the only person he has ever loved.

Nina Lane has written an amazing story that will resonate with every reader: from the deepest love two people could ever explore to the collapsing of a relationship.

Allure (Book #2) in the Spiral of Bliss series is due to be released in April 2013.

The Montgomerys and Armstrongs – Book 2

About the book: Released March 19, 2013

Genevieve McInnes is locked behind the fortified walls of McHugh Keep, captive of a cruel laird who takes great pleasure in ruining her for any other man. Yet when Bowen Montgomery storms the gates on a mission of clan warfare, Genevieve finds that her spirit is bent but not broken. Still, her path toward freedom remains uncertain. Unable to bear the shame of returning to a family that believes her dead or to abandon others at the keep to an imposing new laird, Genevieve opts for the peaceful life of an abbess. But Bowen’s rugged sensuality stirs something deep inside her that longs to be awakened by his patient, gentle caress—something warm, wicked, and tempting.

Bowen seizes his enemy’s keep, unprepared for the brooding and reclusive woman who captures his heart. He’s enchanted by her fierce determination, her unusual beauty, and her quiet, unfailing strength. But wooing her will take more than a seasoned seducer’s skill. For loving Genevieve, he discovers, means giving her back the freedom that was stolen from her—even if it means losing her forever.

Review:

Highlander Most Wanted begins right after Never Seduce a Scot. Bowen, along with a contingent of Montgomerys and Armstrongs, is sent to the McHugh Keep to deal with the aftermath of Ian McHugh having kidnapped his brother and Laird’s wife, Eveline. Immediately upon his arrival at the McHugh Keep, he and his entire group encounter a small boy at the entrance of the keep. And, almost immediately a beautiful, mysterious woman appears to shield the boy and confront the Mongtomerys. Bowen is instantly intrigued, especially when she, Genevieve turns and he sees the horrid scar on the side of her face. Genevieve holds her ground then returns to the McHughs in the courtyard.

Once Bowen and the others enter the keep, he ascertains, rather quickly, that Genevieve is not well liked among her clansmen. She does, however, have one who is fierce in her support, Taliesan. To say that Bowen is livid over the fact that most of the male McHughs have fled, including their laird, and left the others with no real ability to defend themselves is the understatement of the year. And, once Genevieve’s story unfolds, Bowen is furious as to how anyone, male or female, could have held any of what happened to her against her. Seems, he has his work cut out for him. Because he already knows………… Genevieve will be his.

I always fear that those who read my reviews of Maya Banks’ stories think I am just being melodramatic. But, I’m not. NO ONE, in my humble opinion, writes these historicals like her. I always go into her new books with a bit of apprehension. After all, there is no way to top the previous book, right? 110% wrong!! I’ve said it before, I do not know how in the hell she does it. The way the battle scene plays out was genius. And, just the fact that Bowen doesn’t know for a little while what exactly happened makes it all the better. And, the way Genevieve finally comes to realize that she is entitled to be loved, feel protected and just be happy is amazing. To see her rise above the atrocities that were so egregiously heaped upon her will make anyone’s heart swell with pride.

I loved how the Montgomerys and the Armstrongs acted as one. And, hey, who would complain about more hot Scots?? Bowen is the quintessential hero. Strong, loving and oh so loyal to those he loves. Once again, I worship at the alter that is Maya Banks and can’t wait for the next installment!!

A Pleasure for Passion

Perhaps the man who once dominated her dreams could be the husband she has hoped for—and save her from the fate she most fears.

Love Strikes a Chord

Risking scandal, ruin, and their own reputations, Sebastian and Clara enter into a marriage of convenience. But the pair soon discovers that their undeniable attraction is anything but convenient. Swept up in a crescendo of desire, Sebastian and Clara take each other to new heights of ecstasy—until secrets from the past threaten to doom the duet forever. Now Sebastian will have to change his tune—and prove his love is true

***************************

REVIEW: A PASSION FOR PLEASURE is the second storyline in Nina Rowan’s historical romance series Darling Hearts. Although it is part of a series, A Passion for Pleasure can be read as a stand along without too many difficulties.

Clara is a young widow who is currently working with her uncle at his automaton museum. But Clara is more than a widow-she is a mother who has not seen her son in over a year due to circumstances that have spiraled out of control. Her father has guardianship of the young boy and holds leverage over Clara; the information is a lie but a lie that could destroy her life. What Clara doesn’t know is that there is more to the story than Clara ever thought possible. To help get her son back, Clara proposes a marriage of convenience to her former music teacher that could help them both. But what ensues is a battle for custody that will pit two powerful families against one another and a reunion between mother and son with some amazing revelations.

The relationship between Clara and Sebastian is loving and romantic and, welcome in the face of so much sorrow and pain; despair and anger; rumination and angst. A marriage of convenience was proposed but Sebastian demands a marriage that is in every way possible not in name only. The chemistry is immediate even when Sebastian has a difficult time remembering the young student he once taught.

The scandal that has rocked Sebastian’s family is the elephant in the room, which further adds to an already tense situation between Sebastian and his father. Sebastian’s music career is all but over and he withdraws from the music world without any explanation to family and the society that once held him in high esteem. It will take the love of his wife to show Sebastian that music does not stop when the musician can no longer play. Sometimes the music plays on in the heart.

A PLEASURE FOR PASSION is a fast paced, passionate storyline that will strike a chord with historical romance readers. The customs and language of the era are intertwined with a storyline that is sure to please. There are several plotlines involving Sebastian’s family including a reluctant meeting between Sebastian and his mother, and it is Sebastian’s growing love for his new wife that forces a grown man to begin the first steps in accepting the choices his mother made. Clara is a woman who begins to tear down the wall between a mother and son, but a wall that will probably remain standing none-the-less.
