Susan Squires: Your Magic Touch Guest Post and Giveaway

Guest Post-Black and Rose

I’ve always written paranormal romance. People who are out of the ordinary, whether vampires or Saxon witches, brilliant hackers or an Artificial Intelligence, just seemed more interesting. And besides, don’t we all want to be extraordinary? I used to fantasize about getting a magic power. After going through several, I decided the super power I want is the ability to give someone five pounds just by touching them. This may have been triggered by several visits to the Academy Awards (guest, not award winner, needless to say.) In the ladies room, I saw beautiful women who were so thin each vertebrae stood out in their back. I really wanted to give them something I could definitely spare.

Do You Believe In MagicMy most recent series, The Children of Merlin, is about the Tremaine family, whose members have magic in their DNA. Merlin’s magic was dispersed and lost over time, and now it’s gathering again. When one of the Tremaine children meets another with the magic gene, the attraction results in true love and a unique magic power for each. I get to think up a superpower for everybody. Fun. Sounds fun for the characters too, right?

But if you’re extraordinary in some way, your problems can be bigger too, and that’s certainly true for the Tremaines. For one thing, they’re not the only ones with magic. Some magic came from Morgan Le Fay, and the members of Morgan’s Clan don’t like competition. They want the Tremaines dead.

He's A Magic ManBut for another, is it really so easy to be different? Each of the children must wrestle with the certainty that they’ll get magic, and that they’ll be so attracted to another person they really have no choice but to bond for life. In the first of the series, DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? the bad-boy brother, Tristram, thinks he’s so different from the rest of his family that the magic has passed him by. He’s in for a shock. In HE’S A MAGIC MAN, the oldest sister, Drew, is sure of her destiny. But the man who raises her magic power is an alcoholic who’s still in love with his dead wife. Oooh. That hurts.

Each Tremaine will wrestle with having a destiny, loving almost against their will, and getting a magic power they don’t understand and may not be able to control. The love and support of the family may sometimes be the only thing that gets them through.

Your Magic TouchI’m having a good time with the Tremaines. I get to see the younger kids grow up. I get to see what it takes to reach your happy ending, what you sacrifice, what you learn. Recently I got a challenge from several readers. They wanted to know how the Tremaine saga began. How did the Tremaine parents, Brian and Brina, meet and marry? So, this month I released a novella, YOUR MAGIC TOUCH, which answers that question. Think of it as “How I Met Your Mother,” Tremaine style, a little spring break surprise. I counted back to when they must have met. Shock—it was the eighties. Leg warmers, the Police, big hair. Okay, I couldn’t give Brina big hair. Just couldn’t.

Now, I’d like to hear from you. What super power would you have if you could?

And tell me, if you lived through the eighties, what would you prefer to leave behind forever?

Your Magic Touch is a tale of “How I Met Your Mother,” Tremaine-style. The younger Tremaines are growing up and they want details about how their parents met and found their magic, details Brina and Brian Tremaine are reluctant to share. How much can they reveal to their children about the instant and potent sexual attraction of the magic in their genes, the powerful emotions of finding powers they don’t understand? And neither wants to admit what Brian did for a living before he found his destined mate, or exactly who introduced them. This novella shares both Brina’s version and Brian’s version of events, but even as each parent tries to conceal pertinent details from their children, the reader will know all.

REVIEW:   YOUR MAGIC TOUCH is a prequel novella in Susan Squires The Children of Merlin series focusing on the Tremaine family. The Tremaine’s are a magically gifted family (descended from Merlin) whose members come into their powers when they meet their ‘other half and soul mate.’ Your Magic Touch is Brina and Brian’s (the parents) back story told in flashbacks, present day and memories. The storyline also advances the series several months if not a year.

Susan takes the reader on a journey of memories and love, fear and passion. We watch as Brian and Brina struggle to reveal the exact nature (to their children) under which they were first introduced while avoiding the intimate details about when and how they came fully into their powers-Brina as a healer/Brian as an adapter. There are some lines parents should never cross 😉

The amazing thing about this particular storyline is the ‘Brina and Brian’ we never knew. We caught a glimpse of Brian’s personality in He’s A Magic Man-a take no prisoners attitude-one that would die to protect his children, but it is his past that was a bit of a surprise-Brian was a wee bit of a ‘bad boy’ 😉

YOUR MAGIC TOUCH also explains a little of the history of their magical ancestry as well as we encounter a current nemesis in all of her glory when she hopes to pull the young couple into her plans. But if it wasn’t for this woman, Brina and Brian may have never met.

Your Magic Touch is a wonderful storyline, rich in backstory history that is a welcome addition to the Children of Merlin series. I am a fan of prequel novellas especially when the hero and heroine are already an established couple. It is great to learn about their past life and history. Susan writes an amazing new series with The Children of Merlin and the Tremaine family.

BELONG TO YOU (Cole #1) by Vi Keeland-a review

Belong To You

Amazon / Barnes and Noble/ KOBO

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 4, 2013

My honeymoon was almost everything I dreamed it would be, a tropical paradise, turquoise water, romantic walks on the beach, and loads and loads of mind shattering sex. The only thing missing was the groom.

After seven years of coasting through a relationship with Michael, my senses were numb. A week of passion with a stranger was just what I needed to clear my head and take back control of my life. But how do you move on when the man that was only supposed to be a fling somehow seeps into your soul and steals your heart?

***********

REVIEW: BELONG TO YOU is the first storyline in Vi Keeland’s new series written in the same stylings as Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series and is there any wonder when the author is a fan of Day and E.L. James; even the title of the book is similar. As a fan of Day’s Crossfire series I recognized the story outline and quickly matched up hero and heroine, friends and enemies, family and painful childhood memories. Although the overall premise and story is different, the underlying fact is the similarities that cannot be denied.

Our heroine Syd wasn’t looking for a rebound romance but a week of fun in the sun once disguised as a honeymoon package for lovers. After discovering her fiancé in a compromising position, she heads to Hawaii with her BFF and plans a week of drinking to escape the memories and images of the man she once thought she loved. But at her friend’s insistence, Syd finds herself experiencing a week of sexual fantasies all thanks to the beautiful and mysterious Jack Cole Heston-a man hiding more than one secret of his own.

Neither Syd nor Jack had any intention of falling in love; sand, surf, drinking and dancing were on the menu every night, but within a few days, Jack and Syd would begin to bare their souls and their deepest secrets to one another. It was only when Syd returned to New York, did the truth about Jack’s real identity and past reveal. As a singer, trying to reestablish her career, Syd would discover she had more of a connection to Jack than one week of sexual pleasure in Hawaii. He was now her boss and their need for each other was beginning to affect their lives-both private and public.

BELONG TO YOU is a fun and easy read; an interesting storyline but one that is very familiar. Jack Cole is a man with a past mired in family secrets, a successful but controversial business on the side, and a sexual history of which very few men would or could aspire. Syd is a woman scorned, trying to restart a singing career that was squashed by her former fiancé, and a heart that knew betrayal –up close and personal. Neither wanted anything permanent but what they found-was something both were missing in their life. If you like Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and Gideon Cross, check out Belong to You by Vi Keeland.

Description:
Section 8, will involve military heroes, intrigue and action. The first book, Surrender, is set in New Orleans and the hero is Dare O’Rourke.
On the run and living for revenge…

Desperate, fearless, and hunted.

For ex-Navy SEAL Dare O’Rourke, Section 8 was legendary. The son of one its missing members, he grew up in the shadow of its secrets. All he knew was that it was a cabal of operatives discharged from branches of the military and reassigned to extremely dangerous, off-the-books international missions. And their handler, who answered only to the president, was as shrouded in mystery as the missions themselves.

Nothing can stop them. Nothing can break them.

Now, the handler of Section 8 has given extreme orders: kill any remaining members, along with their families. It’s then that Dare makes a startling discovery: the existence of a long-lost half sister named Avery he was never meant to meet. Determined to fight for their lives and find their missing father, Dare and Avery bring together the last members of Section 8 for one last mission: to avenge their families, and to survive.

Review:
Surrender by Stephanie Tyler is the first book in her new Section 8 series, which is Romance Suspense.  This is my first time reading Stephanie Tyler, and I loved her writing in this book.

Surrender has everything, from adventure, danger, suspense, hot military men, strong women, and steamy sex, not to mention a nasty villain.  We meet one of our heroes, Dare O’Rourke in the beginning, as he is living in seclusion, hiding from those trying to find him and kill him.  Dare is forced to come out of hiding, to help save the half sister, he has never met. Together Dare and his sister Avery, try to find a way to survive, and hold off the man behind Section 8, who plans on killing everyone who had anything to do with now the defunct division.  This includes any family members who knew of Section 8 from their family.

Dare kidnaps Grace, who is Richard Powell’s daughter, who is the man bent on killing them, and the villain of this story.  However, in a short time, Dare realizes that Grace is as much a victim as he and Avery are. Grace was a great heroine, very strong, and a warrior in her own right, not to mention having a psychic gift she must learn to use.    Her father tortured her, and when she escaped, she managed to become even stronger to help her survive.   The connection between Dare and Grace becomes apparent immediately, and once they learn to trust one another, they will team up with others, who are also in danger.   I loved how Tyler created these characters, from Dare, Grace, Avery, Gunnar, Jem, and Key.  They were wonderfully created, with their own flaws, and you found yourself caring about each of them.

As the enemy gets closer, they all join together, knowing their lives depend on each other’s help in order to survive, which was looking extremely slim.  Dare and Grace had a lot of chemistry, and their sexual scenes were very hot. Avery is also a great female character, who has excellent chemistry with the other men.  Tyler has so much material to continue this series, with all of them.

The entire book was very exciting, as it was a tense edge of your seat suspense, with some surprising twists, as well as a passionate group of heroes.  I could not put the book down during the last third of the book, since I was thoroughly hooked into the adventurous thrill ride that brought us to a slam bang ending.

Surrender was a wonderful book, filled with non stop exciting action, and a group of characters you will love.  If you want romance suspense at its best, you need to read Stephanie Tyler.  Now that I have discovered her, I plan to read more of her other series, and I will automatically have Section 8 on my must buy list.

Description:
New York Times bestselling author Janet Chapman welcomes her fans back to Spellbound Falls, where no one is immune to the magical powers of love…

Originally from the ancient mythical island of Atlantis, Nicholas has spent the last year deep in the mountains of Maine, serving as Director of Security for the Nova Mare and Inglenook resorts. Fully embracing his life in the twenty-first century, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to a trouble-prone employee, and is determined to keep her safe.

The last thing Julia Campbell needs is a man with a hero complex, especially one as handsome and imposing as Nicholas. All she has to do is keep it together until her younger sister turns eighteen, and then she can focus on her own life. But strange things have been happening at the resort—and it’s Nicholas who keeps coming to her rescue. When Nicholas is suddenly the one in trouble, Julia realizes he’s not quite what he seems—and that she’ll do anything to help the man who’s stolen her heart…

Review:

The Heart of a Hero is Janet Chapman’s aptly named, 4th installment in her latest series titled Spell Bound Falls.  This time around readers can enjoy the story of Nicholas, our recently introduced warrior from the Mythical Island of Atlantis…who found himself (happily) divested of his duty as guardian to wild hearted Princess Carolina Oceanus; in book 3.  Having been tasked with this “honor” since the age of seven–upon falling in love with the screaming, minutes old baby girl thrust into his arms while adults rushed to save her mother–Nicholas feels compelled to stay within this time that has brought ‘Lina’ such contentment.

What is a warrior to do upon suddenly realizing his life now belongs to him, to do with as he sees fit?  Nicholas accepts a job offer befitting this new “world” from Maximillian Oceanus (one of his previous “bosses” from Atlantis, and hero of book 1) and utilizes his warrior instincts, as Director of Security for the Nova Mare; and Inglenook Resorts.  Those of which, are nestled in the mountains of Maine near an inland Sea named Bottomless that “mysteriously” formed a few years ago–and of which was coined as the 9th natural wonder of the world–and made a booming tourist attraction over night.

Unaware that leagues of local women are plotting on how to garner the attention of the mysterious, dark haired, blue eyed stranger with no last name….Nicholas remains oblivious of the fact that he is considered Nova Mare’s most eligible bachelor, and takes his job dead serious. It isn’t until his attention is required for a suspicious altercation, and his path crosses with Julia Campbell that just Nicholas becomes interested in the chase of a different kind.

Enter Julia Campbell.  Our heroine avoids the people of  SpellBound Falls altogether as a general rule.  She keeps to herself, works hard, trusts few, dates NEVER, and relies on no one.   Daughter of the town drunk, and labeled “the town slut”–her ex-husband leaves her with a ruined reputation, and a small mountain of credit card debt; to thank her for working 6 years to put him through college.  Lacking the finances to complete college herself, Julia’s sole purpose in life is providing for herself and her younger sister, and to prove everyone wrong.  Finding herself in somewhat of a bind when dealing with her brother, Julia comes face to face with the Resort’s mysterious, and far too handsome; Director of Security.

Everything changes for Julia that night, in one instant, when she finds herself drawn into the powerful arms of this same man, and thoroughly kissed.  Knowing this stranger’s act was an effort to shelter her from her father’s drunken anger, only done to keep her safe, as is his job, Julia plans to put aside the haunting memory.  Certain the possibility of being shoved off the mountain by a jealous female is very likely, and the possibility for the town slut to receive the attentions of Nova Mare’s most highly sought after single male….not so much.

Intrigued, and inexplicably drawn to this very private, stubborn, and intensely independent woman named Julia, Nicholas cannot help but make it his personal mission to see to her safety….and to discover if she likes….cats…six in particular…:)

The stakes are raised when Nicholas is called to action once more as the warrior he is, for Atlantis.  Soon he discovers that someone wants him dead, that there is more to his past than being left on the beaches of Atlantis as a baby; by an ornery “whale” named Leviathian.  And that gaining the affection of one trouble prone 21st century woman…will be the greatest battle of his life.  A battle that cannot be won with use of his sword…but achieved only by The true Heart of a Hero.

In Chapman’s signature blend of humor, magic, action, suspense, and romance; we watch the tables turn drastically as Nicholas’s secrets (as well as the secrets of the town itself) begin to unravel; and it is up to Julia to pursue, protect, and provide help for the man who has shown her the joy belonging to someone can bring.

This was a wonderful read from beginning to end, furthering the wonderful story arc Ms. Chapman began with SpellBound Falls, filled with an entire cast of fantastic main and secondary characters, as well as a few old friends.  Janet Chapman only continues to get better with each book, and I for one cannot wait for the next installment For the Love of Magic.

Catching Up With Thea Harrison

Catching Up With Thea Harrison

Thea Harrison pic
The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back the wonderful Thea Harrison.

Thea is here to catch us up on her new release, Rising Darkness, which was released last week.  This is her first book in her new series, A Game of Shadows series.

Let’s talk to Thea.

Interview blue:blackHi, Thea.  Thank you for taking the time to revisit us at The Reading Cafe to discuss your new series, ‘A Game of Shadows’, and the first book, in that series, Rising Darkness, as well as to give us an update as to what else you may be working on.

Thea: Thank you for having me!  It’s always a pleasure to visit with you. 🙂

TRC: You have just released the 1st book in your Game of Shadows series.  Can you give us a description about the premise of this series?  How many books are you planning for this series?

Thea: The Game of Shadows novels is a two-book series, starting with Rising Darkness and concluding with Falling Light (February 2014).  This series is very different from my Elder Races series.  It’s PNR but with a strong feeling of urban fantasy, four points of view, and a cliffhanger at the end of the first book.  The relationship between the hero and heroine is incredibly strong.

Rising DarknessTRC: Rising Darkness was released on April 2, 2013.  Can you please tell us briefly about the book?

Thea: An essential part of this story is the heroine, Mary’s, journey of self discovery.  She really comes into her own by the end of the book.

I’m delighted to share that RT Book Reviews has giving Rising Darkness a 4 ½ stars TOP PICK!

Here is the official blurb for the book:
USA Today bestselling author Thea Harrison begins an all-new, darkly romantic paranormal saga, in which the fate of existence itself lies in the balance—and the key to victory may rest in the hands of two eternal lovers…

In the hospital ER where she works, Mary is used to chaos. But lately, every aspect of her life seems adrift. She’s feeling disconnected from herself. Voices appear in her head. And the vivid, disturbing dreams she’s had all her life are becoming more intense. Then she meets Michael. He’s handsome, enigmatic and knows more than he can say. In his company, she slowly remembers the truth about herself…

Thousands of years ago, there were eight of them. The one called the Deceiver came to destroy the world, and the other seven followed to stop him. Reincarnated over and over, they carry on—and Mary finds herself drawn into the battle once again. And the more she learns, the more she realizes that Michael will go to any lengths to destroy the Deceiver.

Then she remembers who killed her during her last life, nine hundred years ago… Michael.

Order Links: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

TRC: Will we learn more about Michael and Mary’s past or do you have any plans for a ‘back-story’ to their relationship? Perhaps a prequel novella?

Thea: Ooh, I hadn’t thought of a prequel novella before!  That sounds like it could be fun!  I’ll have to think about that.  Through the course of the two books, Michael and Mary’s relationship is deepened, and that includes some information about their past, and about their real natures.

KINKED.Nov 2013TRC: Your next book in your wonderful Elder Races series is coming in November, 2013, Kinked.   Would you like to tell us anything about this next book in this series? How is the significance of the title Kinked worked into the storyline?

Thea: Kinked was SO MUCH FUN to write!  It’s Aryal and Quentin’s story, and for readers of the series, you know that means they start out as enemies.  I’ve actually called it a “hate sex buddy movie love story type of thing.”

The title is significant for several reasons.  There is a touch of BDSM in it, and also, Aryal and Quentin are just so contrary.  It’s funny, with a few touches of sad – and did I mention funny??? - and full of action and feeling, and I can’t wait until it releases.

TRC: Would you like to share with us on what you are currently working on?

Thea: This week I finished the final touches to a proposal for a brand new series!  My agent is taking the first steps to shopping around for a home for it.  I’m afraid I can’t tell you any more than that, except that I’m excited to see what happens next!

And this does NOT mean that the Elder Races series is over!  This summer, my editor and I will begin discussing ideas for book seven and beyond.  I’m excited for that too!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Thea: If you have European readers, I am happy to say that I will be attending the Love Letter Convention in Berlin in late May.  It’s going to be so much fun – I can’t wait!

Thank you, Thea, for giving us an update on Rising Darkness, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.   It was a pleasure having you visit us again.

REVIEW: Have you ever wondered about reincarnation? Did you ever have a sense of déjà vu?

Well, that is how our heroine has felt most of her life. Mary’s dreams, both asleep and awake, take her to places that feel familiar and dark. But her dreams become reality when the voice in her head, tells her to run and run fast. Evil is waiting for Mary and soon the disembodied voice will be her only companion until a handsome stranger reveals that Mary is dying and her psychic spirit is a beacon for those hoping to destroy their kind.

Michael has been searching for his mate for over nine hundred years. Without his mate, he is only half of a whole; the other half to his soul is missing. When he finally locates the one, it will take some convincing on his part to prove to Mary that love truly transcends the centuries. As Mary’s memories return so too does the Deceiver-the darkness that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that Mary loves. Fighting as a team, Mary and Michael will join together in an attempt to thwart what evil has in store.

Michael and Mary’s relationship is slow to build. In fact, a good portion of the book is spent following Mary as she pursues the voice in her mind. Michael’s storyline introduces much of the background information regarding the premise of the story and more is revealed when Michael finally convinces Mary that they have always belonged together and together they would destroy the Deceiver. I like that Mary did not accept Michael at face value and wasn’t willing to jump into bed, but then again, neither was Michael-the man knew that his mate needed time to understand the reality of their situation. I also liked that Thea did not drag out the angst and anxiety between the couple. It was a given that Mary and Michael belonged together so why prolong the inevitable book after book.

Thea Harrison has written a fascinating and amazingly detailed introductory storyline that spans the ages with well-developed yet vulnerable characters and richly detailed worlds. From ancient civilizations to current day native culture and rituals, Thea blends fantasy with science fiction, suspense with hope, hatred with love.
