The Vampire Affair Part 2

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca /

Release Date: April 23, 2013

If you thought part one was steamy and charged with sexual fervor, then you have not read part two. In part one it is more than established that journalist Mikayla and business man, Jonathan have some serious chemistry. The story picks up where it left off a day or two I would presume after that saucy encounter in the hotel stairwell.

It doesn’t take long before Mikayla and Jonathan finally act on their passions…behind a bush in a secluded area. It doesn’t end with this sexy episode as there are more saucy scenes that go on as Mikayla and Jonathan just can’t get enough of each other. What’s sweet about this book is that it’s not just about sex but they are intimate on an emotional level. Due to their circumstances, they are both a little on the emotionally guarded side in which I can understand with Mikayla keeping up the emotional shield because it’s supposed to be business and Jonathan being a public figure in which the press always targets and creates rumors about him. So to see they both slowly but surely let their guards down around each other is very relieving. Despite that, they are both hiding something from each other.

In the midst of it all, it seems like everything is about to blow up in Mikayla’s face when a rival reporter goes rogue on Mikayla’s case, Jonathan’s publicist being a major jerk to her and tries what he can to get rid of her, her boss about to fire her but most of all the reveal of her true identity to Jonathan. So did Mikayla bite of more than she can chew and went way over her head with this situation? Has she fallen for Jonathan? Will the secrets finally come out about Mikayla real identity to Jonathan or the fact that Jonathan is a vampire? I won’t give anything too big away except everything really does work out in the end and that no one’s gets broken in this one.

Part 2 did not disappoint me but it was such a short story that it may as well have been part of the first part. Mikayla is demure yet has a boldness that surprises you. Jonathan really surprises me that he is actually a really good guy even though the press loves to muck up his image that he is a scumbag when he is really not. So I highly enjoyed part 2 greatly just felt like it should just be part of part 1 and just be a novel. Other than that I didn’t have any other complaints about the books.

A HIGHLAND WEREWOLF WEDDING (Heart of the Wolf #11) by Terry Spear-Review and Giveaway

A Highland Werewolf Wedding

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 7, 2013

Elaine Hawthorn is a gray American werewolf, currently out of work, and on a mission to share in a family treasure. When she arrives in Scotland, she nearly has a head-on collision with one hot, kilt-garbed Highlander, and runs him off the road.

Werewolf laird Cearnach MacNeill isn’t happy Elaine ruined his car, but he quickly becomes her protector after a misunderstanding lands her right in the middle of two feuding clans. Now he’s out to ensure that this sexy female wolf gets her fair share of her clan’s treasure. He knows he should leave well enough alone, but it’s too late to leave his heart out of it

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: A HIGHLAND WEREWOLF WEDDING is the 11th storyline in Terry Spear’s Heart of the Wolf series but can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. Many of the storyline characters have already had their stories told, but A Highland Werewolf Wedding reads fairly smooth without too many unanswered questions.

The premise of the storyline begins in 1785 where Elaine Hawthorn, an alpha female wolf, first met Cearnach MacNeill as she embarked onto the shores of Scotland after leaving America (with her pirate uncles) following the murder of her parents. But her need to run from a potentially unwanted and arranged mating and the people that hanged her uncles, will find Caenarch searching for the woman who tugged at his heart. Fast forward to the present day where Elaine returns to Scotland under the misapprehension of a business deal that could see the family fortune returned, and Caenarch will discover that his heart and his wolf still want Elaine. Only Elaine is a distant cousin to the MacNeill’s sworn enemy and her appearance with Caenarch at a family wedding will set into motion a pack feud that has been simmering since 1785.

The relationship between Cearnach and Elaine is heightened with the knowledge that their union may be unwelcome. From their second ‘accidental’ meeting to a chase through the Highlands of Scotland, Cearnach knows that the beautiful woman at his side will one day be his future mate-perhaps much sooner than later. And convincing the family matriarch is a lot easier than he ever could have imagined.

There is none of the angst of the push and pull of an unwelcome mating. Cearnach knows that Elaine is meant to be his mate, and the wolf in Elaine, although an Alpha as well, knows that her place is beside Cearnach. The relationship is loving; Cearnach is a man who knows how to treat a woman with love and respect; and Elaine is a woman who welcomes Cearnach with open arms.

There is a twist revealed at the end, but a twist that I had surmised fairly early on. Although many readers may be surprised, there is a build up to the reveal when questions about missing persons and queries go unsolved.

Terry Spear does an amazing job blending the past with the present as she comes full circle with the family histories and fight for lost possessions. If you are a fan of fast paced, paranormal shifter storylines A HIGHLAND WEREWOLF WEDDING is a fun read and will sure to please.

Description:
What happens when a feisty young woman travels west in 1880 to pick up a family deed? If it’s small-town Melinda McCorkle, you can count on luck to take a hike. Mindy is travelling with six strange men in a hard-riding stagecoach. When the coach breaks down, they’re forced to walk the thirty-five miles remaining to her destination. That would be enough to try anyone’s patience, but then the company is set upon by thieves and murderers in the form of the evil Byler brothers, and the stakes are raised.

Fortunately, Mindy makes the close acquaintance of two “gentlemen,” Luke Wilhite and Gary Boone, who try to help her through these dangers.

Luke is tall and fair, while Boone is taller and dark. Mindy feels an immediate attraction to Boone, but he’s married! Or is he? Who will finally win Mindy’s affection ?

Review:

If you like your romance on the sedate side, then Melinda Heads West by Robyn Corum is for you.

I loved the story, it was a gentle love story, and the twists were fun to read. Boone was my favourite, tall dark and moody. Lucas or Luke was the opposite, a true southern gentleman.

Melinda was a feisty, young woman, who came to the west to collect a dead relatives estate. Along the way the wagon loses a wheel, and the 6 men and Melinda have to travel to the nearest town. The bad guys are after money on the wagon. They have no morals, and think nothing of shooting anyone in their way.

The feelings between the three of the characters, alternated between animosity, loathing and the down right hate. I did get the feeling that the hate/hate relationship between Melinda and Boone was the more intense. The feelings between Luke and Melinda felt more like a mutual affection. And regarding the marital status of Boone …….. You will have to read and find out.

Lots of misunderstandings and wrong actions, cause the three characters to dance around how they truly feel. The ending wasn’t really a surprise, but the author did leave it till the last few pages.

It’s a great book to read while waiting for a doctor’s appt. But if you were looking for racy or a ménage, then this isn’t the book for you.

Fueled by memories of someone else’s past, she sets off on a wild quest for the stone’s birth place, hoping to also find answers to her foreboding dreams.

On the outside, Mason Green looks like a hard working, self-made millionaire, with too busy a life for romance. Very few people know the real reason for his self-imposed seclusion. It’s safer that way. But when a sexy historian shows him a supernatural stone from a forgotten tribe, Mason is intrigued – maybe the relic is the salvation he’s been waiting for. Ignoring the irrational attraction that threatens to crack the cask around his heart, Mason agrees to help Chloe.

As their wild quest becomes a dangerous mission, they must find the relic’s birthplace before Mason’s past catches up to them.

Review:

After reading the book’s synopsis I have to admit I was intrigued and knew this would be a book right up my alley.  I was right and have to say was not disappointed with Ella Phoenix and her storytelling.  Raven’s Awakening (formerly Manataka) is a quick read, full of drama, suspense, intrigue, danger, Native American Folklore, with a side of romance thrown in for good measure. The storyline is well developed, moves along at a good pace and allows the reader to settle in for a wonderful journey.

Along this journey we meet Chloe and Mason.  Two characters who are very easy to like and connect too.  Ms. Phoenix does an excellent job of writing these two characters and merging them as a couple.  Sometimes in shorter novels I find it hard to connect with, and see two characters come together as a couple because there isn’t much background, or time to tell their stories before becoming a couple, but this doesn’t happen here.  Chloe and Mason’s characters are well balanced and easily blend together to form the core of the story. Chloe is a fun female lead you can’t help but like.  She’s feisty, strong, brave and smart.  Mason comes up with the perfect nickname for her; “his little blonde tornado”, and she is forever keeping him on his toes, all the while helping him to heal and come to terms with what happened all those years ago.  Mason, what can I say about Mason other then,(thud, picks self up off floor, settles back in her seat to continue typing), sorry where was I, oh yeah Mason, one word, swoon-worthy.  From his first description in the book I was captivated by him and wanted to learn more. The more I learned, the more I liked and became an instant fan of his. Mason’s character instantly drew me in and wouldn’t let me go till I found out everything I needed to know.

It’s through Mason and later his connection to Chloe that Ms. Phoenix weaves her tale of Native American folklore and mystery.  She seamlessly blends Mason’s past with Chloe and the present.  We learn of a Native American myth the Tula Tribe and the legend of Manataka.  Now if anyone knows me, they know how much I love a good story with a healthy dose of myth and folklore thrown in for added measure.  Thank you Ms. Phoenix for satisfying my folklore fix.  I truly enjoyed this part of the story, it was captivating, suspenseful, magical and action packed towards the end with just a hint of danger to spice it up enough.

As I said earlier, for me this story had all the right elements.  If you are a fan of folklore/myth, drama, intrigue and a good romance then this one’s for you. Ms. Phoenix is a wonderful author with a great imagination and gift for storytelling.  I enjoyed every moment of this book, even though she leaves the book a little on the open ended side.  It looks like the legend of Manataka will continue in another book, and for me I couldn’t be happier.  I say bring it on and let the fun continue Ms. Phoenix.  Happy reading everyone.

Rush

Breathless Trilogy – Book 1 (Release Date: February 2013)

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca Barnes and Noble / KOBO/ The Book Depository

Gabe, Jace, and Ash: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Gabe, it’s making one particular fantasy come true with a woman who was forbidden fruit. Now she’s ripe for the picking…

When Gabe Hamilton saw Mia Crestwell walk into the ballroom for his hotel’s grand opening, he knew he was going to hell for what he had planned. After all, Mia is his best friend’s little sister. Except she’s not so little anymore. And Gabe has waited a long time to act on his desires.

Gabe has starred in Mia’s fantasies more than once, ever since she was a teenager with a huge crush on her brother’s best friend. So what if Gabe’s fourteen years older? Mia knows he’s way out of her league, but her attraction has only grown stronger with time. She’s an adult now, and there’s no reason not to act on her most secret desires.

As Gabe pulls her into his provocative world, she realizes there’s a lot she doesn’t know about him or how exacting his demands can be. Their relationship is intense and obsessive, but as they cross the line from secret sexual odyssey to something deeper, their affair runs the risk of being exposed—and vulnerable to a betrayal far more intimate than either expected.

Review:

Oh, where to start with this one…… When Mia enters the ballroom and Gabe sees all eyes fall upon her, something stirs within him that he knows will change everything. He and Mia share a short dance and then he whisks her out onto the balcony and kisses the ever living daylights out of her and leaves her stunned…..and reeling. He then sends her home and tells her to be at his office the next morning. He knows that she’s wasting her talents by helping out at a local bake shop and it’s high time something is done about that.

When Mia arrives at his office, he offers her a job to be his assistant and to be at his beck and call 24/7. Not just professionally, but personally as well. But when he shows her the contract that she’ll have to sign, will Mia run for the hills or succumb to the fantasy that has intrigued her for years? And, what of her brother, Jace? She knows he will not be happy about any of it, but she jumps in with both feet. They decide to keep the personal part of their agreement a secret. But, as we all know, secrets have a way of coming out, and to say that this secret is revealed in the most inopportune way is a huge understatement.

This book has everything you expect from Banks. Erotic sex scenes, an extremely ALPHA male lead and a naïve, yet business savvy female lead. And, as much as it pains me to say, it fell a little short for me. I loved characters. I loved their interaction and how they came to care for each other. I loved how Gabe, Jace and Ash are there for each other, no matter what. I even loved how Gabe’s ex came back into the picture trying to stir up trouble. And, I absolutely loved the way Jace came to find out that Gabe and Mia were together. My heart broke for all of them during that particular scene, and I did NOT see that coming!! That scene itself made the whole read worth it. But, the whole “contract” thing put me off. I, personally, feel that that particular storyline has been done to death and thought that the story could have survived without it. With that being said, I really really liked the book. Unfortunately for me, I am used to LOVING her books. I’ve said it a hundred times. I worship at the altar that is Maya Banks, but this one missed the mark for me. LIKED, not LOVED………… But, definitely worth the read

Breathless Trilogy – Book 2 (Release Date: April 2013)

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Jace, Ash, and Gabe: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Jace, it’s a woman whose allure takes him completely by surprise…

Jace Crestwell, Ash McIntyre, and Gabe Hamilton have been best friends and successful business partners for years. They’re powerful, they’re imposing, they’re irresistibly sexy, and Jace and Ash share everything—including their women.

When they meet Bethany, Jace begins to feel things he’s never experienced before: jealousy, and a powerful obsession that threatens him, overwhelms him—and excites him beyond control.

Jace isn’t sharing Bethany—with anyone. He’s determined to be the only man in her life, and it’s jeopardizing a lifelong friendship with Ash. Bethany will be his and his alone. Even if it means turning his back on his best friend.

Review:

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! This one starts out right where Rush left off. Bethany is working as a server at Gabe and Mia’s engagement party when Jace sees her across the room. Ash notices Jace eyeing her and approaches her about spending the night with him and Jace. Seems they like to share their conquests. But Jace isn’t so sure about sharing this one, but ultimately gives in. Unfortunately, he almost immediately knows that he has made a huge mistake. She is his and he knows that’s going to create problems with him and Ash.

Jace awakens the next morning and goes to take care of a few things and when he returns, discovers that Bethany has left, and to make matters worse, Ash didn’t find out where she was headed. Jace becomes a bit crazed and uses all of his means to locate her. Once he does, and discovers her true circumstance, he isn’t quite sure what to make of it all. She is homeless and a recovering addict. But, he knows that he will do everything in his power to make sure she is taken care of and his.

As he gets to know more about her, he discovers that her “brother” isn’t someone that Bethany should be placing her trust in. He soon figures out though that he has to tread lightly where the brother is concerned, until Bethany can discover for herself that things aren’t as they appear where he’s concerned.

Gabe, Mia and Ash all help Jace in reassuring Bethany that she is worthy of his love, and some of those scenes are so well written that I had to put it down a couple of times. My heart was pounding and breaking all at the same time. Banks, for me, writes with more emotion than any author I’ve ever read and it leaps off of the page at you and totally engulfs you to the point where you can’t turn the pages fast enough.

Bethany is one of my favorite Banks heroines. And, that’s saying A LOT. She was so unexpected for me, and so totally believable. Is Jace a controlling jerk at times? Abso-freaking-lutely…….. But his determination with her is something to behold. Once they both get past their own demons and decide that they are meant to be together, look out world!! They still have hurdles, but it’s always easier to jump “said” hurdles with someone you love. Cliché?? You bet it is, but this works on so many levels that you can’t help but fall in love with them. Well done Maya, well done!!!!! I absolutely can’t wait for Ash’s book!!!!

Crista McHugh – A Soul for Vengeance Guest Post & Giveaway

Guest Post=Black and Red

A Soul For Vengeance is the final book in The Soulbearer Trilogy. Don’t let the title fool you – this novel isn’t some dark tale about people obsessed with getting revenge on their enemies.

Soulbearer Collage

Well, OK, maybe just a little.

After all, foreign invaders have ransacked Kell’s kingdom and killed off his family. Oh, and let’s not forget how Arden dumped him in the last book. But a handsome prince like Kell won’t little things like that eat away at him.

Not for too long, anyway.

And then there’s Arden, who still has some daddy issues. Unfortunately, her father has the one thing she treasures above all else – her mother’s necklace. Sure, she can do the mature, polite thing and ask nicely for it back, but where’s the fun (and payback) in that? Especially when she has the power of a chaos god to call upon when confronting the man who knocked her mother up and left her behind.

And speaking of Loku, the chaos god has his own agenda. He wants what’s hidden in a secret vault in Lothmore Castle, and he’s willing to drag Arden along for the ride.

Lastly, there’s Zara, who’s constantly side-lined because she’s a woman, even though she’s the brains behind the rebellion “led” by her brother. But a brilliant woman won’t stand for that for very long. If you were Zara, how would you get back at your brother?

A. A pie to the face, because it’s always good for a laugh… and might sully up his expensive silk shirt.

B. Start a rumor around the kingdom that he has a very small… *insert object here*

C. An archery contest because, you know, it worked for Merida in Brave

D. Rally the troops by doing her best Braveheart impression (“They may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR FREEDOM!”)

E. Get him really drunk and lead him to the bed of a woman who has a very over-protective father.

F. Steal all the clothes from his room while he’s sleeping so he’s forced to look for them in his underwear (or naked, if he sleeps in the nude)

Thankfully, Zara didn’t resort to any of the above – way too mature for that – but she does get the credit she deserves in the end.

Review:

Oh, how I love Crista McHugh’s writing style.  A Soul for Vengeance begins shortly after A Soul for Chaos ends.  Prince Kell has been taken hostage by the invaders to his homeland, and thankfully, they never discovered Kell’s identity.  Zara, who is Kell’s best friend’s younger sister, and her troupe of men finally find Kell, rescue him and take him back to their homeland.  Once Kell finds out that his family has basically been decimated, he sets to find out all that he can about the Thallian invaders who have devastated his people.  And, surprise, surprise, it seems Zara knows more than anyone.  The problem with that?  She’s a strong woman in a time where men have the final say.  But, once Kell finds himself falling for Zara, he knows things will never be the same.

Zara is immediately enthralled with Kell, whom she has had a crush on since she was a young girl, but knows she can never be with him.  She was injured during the uprising and she fears that once he sees her scars and learns her secret, that he will shun her.  Silly girl………….

I have so many thoughts running through my head as I try to write this review.  I’ve said in my reviews of the previous books that this trilogy is so different from what I normally read that I literally can’t put these books down once Crista sends them to me.  We’ve been following Arden, the yellow-haired witch, through all of the books and her and Dev’s story is continued throughout this story.  Kell once thought he loved Arden, but once he falls for Zara, he knows down to his toes that he had been a fool.  I loved when he realized that little tidbit.  Of course, Arden and Dev travel to Kell’s homeland to help overthrow the invaders, and once Arden sees how Zara and Kell react to each other, she knows that Kell’s heart is in good hands.

A Soul for Vengeance is a WONDERFUL story about loyalty, misunderstandings, redemption and most of all, love.   The one thing that I hated about this book???  It’s the end of the trilogy!!  It literally hit me when I finished the book that there were no more.  What in the world was she thinking?!?!?!?  LOL!  And, I mean that with all of the love in my heart……….  I’ve said it before, but I have to say it again.  Crista McHugh is on my “must read” list and she should be on yours!  I swear to you, I’d read a phone book that she wrote!!  Well done Crista McHugh, very well done.

About the book:

He stole her job, and now she’s stealing his heart.Eve Doucette finally almost has it all. She’s free from her mistake of an ex-husband and just landed her dream job: project manager for a new City Hall and drafter of the final design. That is, until a handsome architect sweeps into town to commandeer her blueprints.Famous architect Matt Brison is unsatisfied with his mundane life in Toronto. So when the mayor of Halifax asks him to spearhead his City Hall project, Matt jumps at the opportunity. There’s just one problem: the feisty and beautiful project lead, Eve, who isn’t exactly thrilled about her new “coworker” hijacking her design.

But when the sparks begin to fly, they both find themselves falling for the colleague they shouldn’t want. And before they know it, their already shaky foundation might come crumbling down…

Review:

Desire by Design by Paula Altenburg begins with Eve having to handle a group of construction workers on the jobsite who are catcalling a pretty woman walking by.  To prove that kind of behavior is not acceptable, nor appealing, she sees a man walking towards the jobsite and does a catcall herself, hoping that the workers see the error in their ways.  One problem:  the guy she catcalls strolls into her office a short time later and just happens to be a world renowned architect who has been called in to revise the plans for the new city hall project she is overseeing.  Talk about awkward…………….

Eve is immediately defensive with the newcomer, Matt, and proceeds to ask who hired him for this particular project.  His reply:

“Bob Anderson approached me.”

“That would explain it”, she said.  “The mayor is a moron.”

“Maybe so.  But that moron is my uncle.”

Yep, awkward!!  LOL!!!  And, so begins their working relationship. Eve has worked hard to be accepted a field that is usually dominated by men, and thanks to Mayor Anderson, she feels that she more than has her work cut out for her with this guy with the GQ good looks and easy going nature.

Through a series of events, Eve and Matt end up spending a lot of their personal time together as well, and begin to grow closer.  Matt also realizes early on that Eve is scared of something, or someone, and becomes determined to try and keep her safe.  But Eve is determined to keep men at bay.  Her first marriage ended in disaster, albeit, short-lived, and she is in no hurry to go down that road again.  Oh, but what a road they travel.

Altenburg has written a wonderful story of building trust, establishing boundaries and finding love in the most unlikely of circumstances.  I love the way she built their relationship and didn’t rush them.  She let them have fun and laugh and I also love the fact that she wrote the story at Eve’s pace.  She was so unsure of herself and men in general and it was nice to see an author take her time with the heroine’s issues.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more by Paula Altenburg.
