Description:
She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival.

Review:
The Rules of Disappearing by Ashley Elston is her first book in this new YA series.  I wasn’t sure this was a series or standalone, but after finishing it, now I am sure this will continue.  This is a totally different YA book, and an outstanding one at that.  I am totally impressed with Ashley Elston, and her wonderful writing. Imagine a YA book in modern world, no dystopian, no worldbuilding, no real teen angst, but with suspense, drama, somewhat of a thriller, a cute romance, and done so flawlessly.

The Rules of Disappearing held my attention from start to finish, as I could not put the book down.  The book begins with our heroine, choosing her new first name, Meg.  Why you ask?  She and her family are in the Witness Protection program, and once again for the 6th time, they are being relocated.  Meg, and her family; her younger sister Mary (Teeny is her real nickname), her mother and her farther are being sent to a hick town in Louisiana.  Before she goes, the Feds help Meg dye her, with new contact lens, new papers, and a write up of who they now are to study, before arriving to their new home.

Meg is bitter, and hates this life. She left behind friends, and doesn’t understand what really happened to force them into this life.  Her father and the ‘Suits’ (the Feds she nicknames), refuse to tell her anything.  Her mother has become an alcoholic with this change in their lives.  So Meg is determined not to get close to people in her new environment and only worry about Teeny, who is not handling the constant changes very well.

When Meg begins to attend school, she tries to avoid people.  But it is harder then she anticipated, as she finds herself liking Ethan.  No matter what she does, he will not go away, and he also suspects she is not who she says she is.  Ethan is our young hero in this book and he is just awesome.  He is the perfect young man any parent would want for their daughter. Ethan is very independent, but so sweet, fun, caring, and very handsome.  This was slow to build, due to Meg’s hesitation, but it was such a cute romance.  You found yourself rooting for them both.

Elston has created some great characters in this book, from Meg, Ethan, Mary (Teeny), Pearl, the high school friends or enemies, as well as some of the ‘Suits”, and her parents.  Very well done.

This is also a mystery, as the story unfolds, Meg will discover more then she bargained for, as there are so many twists along the way.  Her determination to find out the truth, puts her life, and even that of Ethan in danger. With no spoilers, Meg wants her life back, her family back, and will let nothing stop her from finding the truth.  The last third of the book, as revelations are made, is so exciting and enjoyable to read.  Meg is an awesome heroine, strong, smart, street savvy, stubborn, and loyal.

Each chapter begins with a quote from the rules of disappearing, which for the most part Meg ends up not following.  This was a great read, exciting, interesting, and a story that does not let you stop reading.  A wonderful debut for Ashley Elston, as I cannot wait for the sequel to this book.

Book Description:
Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

Review:

The Eternity Cure is the second book in Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. Four months after we left off in Immortal Rules, Allie is still looking for her sire, Kanin. She can feel the pull, and the dreams she has are real, as she sees him being tortured by the psycho vampire, Sarren, who is the major villain here.  Along the way following the trail that she hopes will lead her to Kanin, she comes across her blood brother, Jackal, whom she would like nothing better then to kill him.  Jackal was one of the bad guys in Immortal Rules, and though he is still not to be trusted, not to mention dangerous; his character added much humor to the story, and strangely, you end up liking him somewhat.

They both agree to help each other in finding Kanin, as Sarren is a master vampire beyond redemption.  They also want to find the cure to the virus that is killing humans, and vampires.  Allie as usual, is a tough kickass heroine, and in this book, she accepts more of what she is…a dangerous vampire.  I loved when Zeke showed up, and the love between the two of them is very much apparent, even with the knowledge that this is an unlikely romance between a human and a vampire.  I liked Zeke in the first book, but loved him even more in this one.  His love for Allie was real, and he would do anything to protect her.  Allie loved Zeke too, but she worried about the monster inside her, if uncontrolled, would hurt him.  But aside from that, it really is a nice romance.

Make no mistake, this is a dark and at times very tense story, with the virus, the victims insanity and killing, and the torture from the bad villains.  But it is an exciting story, though a bit slow early on while Allie was traveling trying to find Kanin.  One of the great things of Kawaga’s writing are the characters she creates; loved Allie & Zeke, even if it seems like an ill fated romance; Jackal, the bad boy who in this book you either laughed with him or wanted to kill him; Kanin, who was more like the sire/father figure that Allie could trust & depend on; Sarren, one of the worst villains, and a total wacko; Salazar, another villain, and Stick, her former nerd friend. The ending was a slambang of an  ending, that tore your heart apart, and yet things were left open for the next book. I can’t wait.

Sandy James-Guest Post and Giveaway

Guest Post and Giveaway with author Sandy James

Guest Post-White and Aqua

Thanks to the Reading Café for letting me guest on their wonderful blog today!

I’m heading a bit controversial for this post. I want to talk about being a teacher and writing romance.

Couple Making LoveSome of you might be aware of the story of Judith Buranich. She’s an English teacher in Pennsylvania public high school. When a few parents discovered she was published in erotic romance, a witch hunt ensued, and she was threatened with termination by the school corporation. (When I checked for updated information, I discovered she overturned her firing on appeal. Good for her!)

I followed the story with fear and fascination, wondering if one day my name would be the one splashed all over the news for writing “that stuff.” (That’s a quote from one of the parents, who also implied Ms. Buranich might be looking at her son in an inappropriate fashion. For the love of… I cannot think of a more ridiculous insinuation.)

My first thought was that if a teacher wrote any other genre, would they pursue her with such vigor? What if she wrote true crime novels—one of the genres I’ve considered with my criminology degree? Would they assume she might have serial killer tendencies?

Obviously, I was worried about my own job in a public high school. I’ve taught psychology for eighteen years, and I love my job. When I wrote my first book, my son was a senior at my school. I watched all of his friends grow up, and I’ve always been very close to those kids. Being an extrovert, I shared with my students that I was having fun writing. They were supportive and a bit in awe that I not only finished that book but went on to make writing my second career. A lot of them love that I use their names for some of my characters.

Pen on KeyboardWhen I sold my first book, I went to my principal and explained that I really wanted to publish in my own name rather than using a pen name. But I did air my concerns that our rather conservative Indiana community might have a “problem” if the parents found out I wrote romance. I told him that there was nothing in the books I would be ashamed for my students to read—probably because I discuss human sexuality in psychology. I was comfortable with parents reading my books as well. After a discussion with our superintendent, my principal gave me his blessings. So I published Turning Thirty-Twelve under my real name. Then I preceded to publish ten more books with more on the way. Both my students and their parents have given me their encouragement, and several former students and parents have become my fans.

Flash forward to 2012. Our state has instituted a rather onerous method of evaluating teachers—something I’m sure many other teachers face in the day and age of kids being tested, tested, and tested some more to see if they’re learning. (Don’t even get me going on that!) We are observed at least five different times during the school year. While I have no problem with any administrator or parent coming into my room to see what I’m up to, I am aware that even good teachers have bad days. It’s just crappy luck if one of those unannounced visits is on one of those days. My first one was…

I’m a good teacher. I don’t say that with hubris. My students are the ones who enlightened me to that fact. They do so in their stellar performances on things like Advanced Placement exams and by telling me how easy college psychology is for them because of my classes. But on the day my boss came for a look-see, I was playing a review game much like Jeopardy with my students, and it didn’t go well. The kids weren’t highly motivated because it was close to Fall Break, so a couple of them—one immature kid in particular—were acting out. Suffice to say I got a bad evaluation, even though I did my best to correct the bad behavior.

Alliiance of the Amazons

Problem was that my fear of being fired from my job for writing romance novels immediately jumped into my thoughts. Was my evaluation bad because of the class clown being mouthy? Or was there something else going on? Was this going to become a pattern as those in power set up a plan to get rid of me because I write romance?

It’s a shame I even have to worry about something that silly, but I was worried. Really worried. So I brought the topic up in my meeting over that evaluation. Thankfully, I was reassured that the thought never crossed my boss’s mind. In fact, he told me that they use me as a great example to students about what someone is capable of achieving if she puts her mind to it. He also said it’s good to be able to claim a published author among the school’s faculty.

Teacher at Chalk boardTo say I was relieved is a sad understatement. And all my evaluations have been stellar after that because the students realized it was their behavior rather than my lack of teaching skill that was criticized. God love ’em, my kids like me, and the affection is wholeheartedly returned.

Have things changed since the Judith Buranich debacle? Or is my corporation just more tolerant? I’m not really sure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again for allowing me to guest blog! It was a pleasure sharing my thoughts with all of you!

My income tax return says that I am a teacher. I had originally intended it to say “lawyer,” but romance, marriage, and motherhood set my life on a different course.

Sandy JamesI’ve been married to Jeff James since 1983. Even after all these years, he is still the love of my life. Jeff and I have two grown children who make us proud every day.

My husband and I share another strong and wonderful interest that is not only a great part of our day-to-day lives but has also become a running theme throughout some of my books. We own a small racing stable of Standardbred Harness horses, pacers to be exact. We have always loved the sport and as our children grew up enough to have their own interests, Jeff looked into what it would be like to own a racehorse. We jumped into the sport with both feet and are loving every minute of it. I’ve added a link to Jeff’s website if you’d like to follow the progress of our horses.

As another bit of personal information, I’d like to share that several years ago I was diagnosed with lupus. I know that there are others out there who either have had the same diagnosis or know someone who has. I’m sharing this because I want to encourage you all that chronic illnesses do not have to keep you down and out of the swing of life. I still teach, still work with my horses, have a wonderful family life, and am still able to spend hours at my laptop writing on my latest book.

I am blessed to be leading a life full of the things I like to do and people I love.

Alliance of the Amazon Series 1-3 by Sandy James-a review

Alliance of the Amazon Series 1-3 by Sandy James-2 reviews

THE RELUCTANT AMAZON (Alliance of the Amazons #1) by Sandy James

The Reluctant Amazon

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 2012

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

REVIEW: THE RELUCTANT AMAZON is the first storyline in Sandy James’s Alliance of the Amazon series. The premise focuses on the background information about a female race of Amazonian elemental warriors-Earth, Water, Air and Fire and, how each member of the Alliance must work together with their fellow ‘sister warriors’ to put a stop to the end of the world. The storyline and series premise also pulls in mythological gods and goddesses, demigods and demons, and a hierarchy of power and control that is tested by the very Amazons trained to defend the world. But as the women are pulled together to locate three of their missing sisters, they will face betrayal and the pain of loss at the hands of one of their own.

Like many supernatural storylines, our heroine is not aware of her heritage or powers until a handsome immortal stranger takes her under his wing. Meeting her fellow warrior sisters, Rebecca soon realizes she is not on the same level of playing field as the others. As an Earth Amazon, it is her heritage to nurture and grow, and she has a difficult time mastering everything that she needs to know. But as the story progresses, Rebecca will discover that she is a leader as well as a warrior, and the others will eventually have to look to Rebecca for guidance and direction. We follow as the Amazon sisters are trained to defend and protect, fight for what they believe and, finally come to the realization that that trust must be earned and should not be given freely.

The relationship between Artair (Highland warrior Sentinel) and Rebecca is immediate but a relationship that may place everyone at risk as Artair’s attention and need to protect Rebecca moves his focus from the women he is supposed to train onto the woman who has stolen his heart. As the history of the Sentinels and Amazons unfolds, we are privy to Artair’s long history with the Amazon warriors and his desire to re-enter the human world. Artair believes it is time he retired but in doing so, he must give up the woman with whom he has fallen in love.

THE RELUCTANT AMAZON is an interesting storyline that blends mythology with a contemporary storyline. The different elemental Amazon’s are each ruled by a goddess specific to each bloodline, but the goddesses are not without some issues of their own. Sandy James weaves a tale that places an ancient warrior with a modern woman who has yet to discover her true self but when she does sometimes having too much power is never a good thing. The storyline has a little bit of romance, a little bit of sex, a little bit of action as well as betrayal, heartbreak and love. The story does not end on a cliffhanger but with the knowledge that the evil is still out there and the Amazon warriors will be needed once again.

The Impetuous Amazon (Alliance of the Amazon #2) by Sandy James-a review

The Impetuous Amazon

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 13, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

REVIEW: THE IMPETUOUS AMAZON is the second storyline in Sandy James’ Alliance of the Amazons series focusing on four female Elemental Amazon warriors and the men they love. The storyline continues to build on the introductory premise as Megan Feurer, the fire Amazon must learn to control her anger and her fire, or find herself powerless in a world haunted by demons, demigods, mythological goddesses and the walking dead. And to ensure Megan follows orders, Sentinel Johann Herrmann, the man who stirred the embers of Megan’s soul in book one, will shadow her every move as she endeavors to reign in her temper when things get out of hand. And to complicate matters, the truth about Megan’s heritage will reveal a deeper connection to the fire goddess than anyone could have imagined and place an invisible wall between Johann and Megan that may be impossible to overcome.

The storyline progresses as Megan and Johann must investigate the mysterious disappearance and deaths of a number of young women all seemingly connected to a popular singer. But it will be Megan that becomes his ultimate target when power and greed are his to command with the help of a number of supernatural powers.

As the title of the storyline implies, Megan is impetuous; a fiery redhead who is the epitome of fire, Megan’s temper and acidic personality fuels the fire that burns within the Amazon warrior. And our heroine hides a painful past –one of betrayal and rejection at the hands of a woman she once called aunt and mother. But as Megan learns to control her fire, she is unable to control her burning need for the man who is trying to keep the flames under control. Johann will learn first hand what it is to love and be loved by a fire Amazon, and without a shield, Megan’s burning love for her Sentinel may put an end to their relationship before it has a chance to begin.

Sandy James combines mythological goddesses and demons with a contemporary storyline that gifts another Amazon warrior with her mate. The world building is limited in this particular story, as most of the premise is character driven-and saying that many of the previous storyline characters play a pivotal role in the fight against evil. There is romance and love, sorrow and pain, action and suspense as well as the continuous animosity and rivalry amongst the goddesses that risks the lives of the men and women under their command. But the heroine was difficult to like at times-her attitude and personality left much to be desired and saying that-she was who she was because of her past.  I am definitely not excusing Megan’s acerbic characteristics because in the real world she would be told in no uncertain terms-where to go and how fast.  The Impetuous Amazon is an interesting and fascinating addition to The Alliance of the Amazon series by Sandy James.

The Brazen Amazon

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

Release Date May 6, 2013

REVIEW: THE BRAZEN AMAZON is the third storyline in Sandy James’s Alliance of the Amazon series focusing on four elemental Amazon warrior women. This is Gina Himmel’s storyline-the air Amazon.

Like the previous storyline, Gina is a strong-willed, independent and kick-a$$ heroine, but there is a softer side to Gina that has yet to emerge. Gina grew up less than feminine-a rough and tumble tomboy and believes herself unworthy of a man’s attention or love. But Gina will have two men vying for her heart: Richard (aka Dick) a former SOG (Son of Gaia): and the other, her most recent assignment-Zach Hanson. Zach is a computer genius and he is the next target of abduction in the struggle for world domination in the war between the gods and goddesses.

The battle for Zach’s invention will lead Gina and the Amazon warriors into a fight between good and evil, but who is fighting whom for domination? When friends present as enemies and enemies present as friends, Gina’s world will be thrown into chaos and Zach will be the unwitting pawn. But a ‘gift’ from the gods will have Zach deep in the heart of the conflict where the wrong move could prove disastrous for everyone.

The relationship between Zach and Gina is quick to build. The couple’s attraction to one another is instant but there is also someone else vying for Gina’s heart. When Richard becomes the odd-man out, sides will be chosen and betrayal will be the ultimate weapon against Gina in the battle for her love. But Gina only loves one man and she is willing to push him away to save both of them any future heartache.

THE BRAZEN AMAZON is another fast-paced well-written installment where the premise and storylines are female driven. There is always a fine line between strong –willed heroine and b*tch, but Sandy James treads carefully in this particular story. Alpha females are often subdued by the men in their lives, but Sandy’s Amazon warriors stay true to form-while not usurping the males- they become equals in their own right.

After lies and betrayal almost destroy their marriage, Dean and Olivia West reignite their blissful passion. The medieval history professor and his lovely wife are determined to fix their mistakes, and Liv’s unexpected pregnancy intensifies their desire to fall madly in love all over again.

Then a family crisis forces Dean back into a feud with his parents and siblings, dredging up guilt over a painful family secret. Dean fights to shield Liv from the hostility, but for the first time, Liv resists her white knight’s defense. Her newfound resolve clashes with Dean’s desperate need to protect her.

Liv and Dean have battled obstacles together before, but bitter family conflicts now endanger their fragile intimacy. And when Dean’s career is suddenly threatened, he and Liv must struggle with events that could damage them in ways they had never imagined.

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ALLURE is the second storyline in Nina Lane’s contemporary romance Spiral of Bliss series that continues the journey of Dean and Liv as they struggle to overcome jealousy, betrayal and a painful past. ALLURE furthers the couple’s spiral into a world fraught with loss, love and the potential to lose everything. Just as their lives take an unexpected turn, a family crisis will see Dean and Liv embarking on a journey that will end with a loss from which one or both may never overcome.

The storyline, once again, blends the past with the present by way of flashbacks, recollections and memories but the majority of this particular storyline is told from Dean’s POV. The reader is pulled into the drama of family betrayal when what everyone sees on the outside, does not come close to the truth underneath. We learn the heartache of pain and sorrow as Dean’s family refuses to accept the woman that he loves as well as the continuous animosity between siblings and parents that threaten an already fragile peace. Dean’s past will resurface with a connection to his family, but his need to protect Liv from further exposure will only force the couple to take a hard look at where they are going-together.

As their lives continue to spiral out of control, the ugliness and brutality of a vengeful student will further Dean and Liv’s already tentative hold on their relationship. But it will be Liv who makes the ultimate sacrifice when she tells Dean what he has to do, and in doing so, may lose the man in whom she loves.

Once again, Nina Lane pulls the reader into an emotional journey of one couple’s struggle to keep the pain at bay, as the walls around them begin to crumble. The romance is sensual and sexual as the couple endeavors to rediscover each other following a heartbreaking separation but sex is not always the answer at the end of the day. Dean’s need to protect his wife from himself and his past, will test the boundaries of their love when Liv asks Dean to let go of the painful memories that threaten to overwhelm him at every turn.

Nina Lane has written a storyline of one couple’s struggle against the realities of life-from betrayal to trust, heartbreak and sorrow, love and lost to the realization that everything you ever needed may be only a few feet away or lying next to you on the bed. Dean and Liv’s relationship is not perfect-it is flawed in ways similar yet different from most. They suffer painful rejections and losses and, like the real world, will be tested at every turn. Their story broke my heart and left me in tears, and I am hoping for a HEA in book 3-AWAKEN.

TIGER MAGIC (Shifters Unbound # 5) by Jennifer Ashley-a review

Tiger Magic

Pre-Order: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca/ Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 4 2013

He was once a captive, but his urges were never caged. Now he’ll release them on a beautiful stranger whose own secret desires are longing to be sated…

He doesn’t have a name. He doesn’t have a clan. The humans who held him prisoner for forty years have taken them away. He knew nothing but captivity until nearly a year ago, when he was released into the light. Now Tiger lives in the Austin Shiftertown, where he struggles to belong and searches for an identity.

Carly Randal thinks her fabulous life is complete—until her car breaks down on the side of the road, and a wild-looking Shifter is the only one to help her. Tiger takes one look at Carly and knows instantly—she will be his mate. As Carly is drawn into his Shifter world, she risks everything she has for that forbidden something she still wants: passionate love.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TIGER MAGIC is the fifth storyline in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series focusing on the animal shifters and the people they love in the Shiftertown of Austin. The premise of Shiftertown is similar to the Japanese Internment Camps of the 40s and the Native American Indian reservations of North America-animal shifters are relegated to second class citizens; tagged and collared and must remain within the confines of a pre-arranged area because of preconceived notions, stereotyping and prejudices about animal shifters and the like. Tiger Magic follows an unknown shifter known only as Tiger as he traverses a new world-one in which he was never raised and a world that wants to use and destroy the beast within the man.

Tiger is an anomaly to the world of shifters-his heritage is unknown to all but the scientists and the government who have tortured, persecuted and experimented all in the name of security, warfare and a better army. Tiger is a hunted animal, a wounded soul who wants to be left alone to live his life. But the day he stopped to help a human female with car trouble, is the day that will change his life-for better or for worse. Tiger will discover the woman is his mate but his identity and the truth about his DNA will place everyone he cares about in danger-including the woman who calls to his soul. Tiger is more beast than man and believes a little bit of magic can be found in every shifter-including himself.

Jennifer takes the reader on a journey of discovery. We watch as some of those wanting to take Tiger down will be forced to see that not every shifter is an animal, but a human with a beating heart; a mind; with the ability to love and hurt, feel sorrow and pain, and experience the loss of a loved one. But not everyone is willing to accept the human side of the beast. There are those still willing to cull the pack, round up the rogues, and control the shifters with every available method.

Tiger and Carly’s attraction is immediate. Reeling from betrayal, Carly will discover that Tiger is unlike any man she has ever encountered especially when he can shift into a larger than life tiger that is willing to defend and protect her at all costs-and it will cost Tiger plenty. Tiger has been created for one purpose and that purpose will show itself time and again. But those who know Tiger are still fearful of the beast, and it will take a small human female to show the shifters of Austin that the beast has been tamed by the ‘mate of his heart’.

TIGER MAGIC is a fascinating look at shifters and their lives. Jennifer keeps the series cohesive and up to date by including many of the previous storyline characters allowing for a smooth jump from one book to the next. The reader never has to wonder what happened to..? The colorful and imaginary characters of Shiftertown are as real and human as any man or woman; they love and hate; cry and laugh; feel pain and pleasure; and most of all will pull you into the story with their heartbreaking tales of discrimination because they are different – different makes things interesting and Jennifer weaves an interesting and wonderful series for everyone to enjoy.

When a new danger threatens Shiftertown’s cubs, Maria partners with Ellison to stop a cold-blooded criminal.

Review: LONE WOLF is the latest novella (150 pages) in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter’s Unbound series focusing on the shifters of Shiftertown, Austin Texas. The storyline focus is on wolf shifter Ellison Rowe and the mate of his heart Maria, the young woman rescued in Wild Cat where she was held captive by a feral pack of shifters.

Ellison has always been protective of Maria and knew she would one day be his mate, but her history with the feral shifters meant Maria was off limits to everyone. There would be more than one male vying for Maria’s attention and Ellison knew he had to step up his game before another male claimed mate status and he lost Maria forever.

Maria is well aware of Shifter rules and knew that she could refuse a mate claim. Wanting to go back to university, Maria sets her sights on an education but when the younger shifters are targeted from the human population, Maria will have to put her future on hold, when the Shifters must hunt down the people responsible. For all of the trauma she has suffered in the past, Maria is a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants and saving the cubs of Shiftertown has moved to the top of her list.

LONE WOLF is a well-written, wonderful short story that finds another Shifter mated and a continuous uneasy alliance between the human population of Austin and the Shifters of Shiftertown. The relationship between Ellison and Maria growls steadily, as both have been drawn to each other for several storylines. Lone Wolf is the culmination of one woman’s healing at the hands of her intended mate. Jennifer Ashley brings together many of the previous storyline characters to add a familiar feel to each and every installment in the Shifters Unbound series.

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN by Chaz Thompson- Review and Interview with the Author

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release November 2012

In the 22nd century, a burned-out, fatalistic psychic is blackmailed into recovering a stolen formula that separates the soul from the human body. Cerebral, acerbic, wry, profane, Stairway2 Heaven examines the relationship between consciousness and corporate religion and personal spiritual empowerment.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is a sci-fi/futuristic fictional suspense novel that looks at the dirty side of corporate greed, big pharma and the philosophical/theological impact of separating the body and the soul. Whether you are a believer (or not) of all things spiritual or a version thereof, Stairway 2 Heaven will definitely make you think about the ‘what-ifs’ and ‘whys’ of the complicated Triad of big business, religion and medicine. And if you believe, you are like many skeptics, big business and medicine are inseparable and irrevocably connected to (and involved) in our daily lives.

The premise follows Matthias Chalmers, a retired psychic in the 22nd century and the fall-out of a research experiment gone horribly wrong–or right– depending on your view point, vantage or need. When Matthias’s twenty-nine year old son Lanier, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome and a genius IQ ‘accidently’ separates his soul from his body while developing a new toothpaste for GORIS pharmaceuticals, Matt will become the pawn in a deadly quest for the ultimate prize.

The storyline is written from Matt’s POV covering various back and forth timelines and intersecting plots. We journey with Matt as he reflects on a lifetime of sins and the past indiscretions that got him to where he is today, all the while on the search for the elusive formula that has gone missing and presumably in the hands of someone close. With a price tag on his head and a target on his back, as well as threats against his family and friends, Matt will discover that even the Vatican is not exempt from the reaches of corporate greed and the possibility of life ever after-but the Vatican wants to destroy the procurer of the ultimate sin.

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is awash in a philosophical and theological conundrum-if there is a way to separate the body from the soul, would you be willing to pay the ultimate price for a chance at a new life? Thompson’s writing pulls the reader into a storyline that will make you think about what really goes on behind the scenes of big corporations, medical research and the quest for the almighty dollar. Add organized religion and the Vatican-you have a story that will question the ideology of our society-who truly is in charge of our daily lives?

Stairway 2 Heaven reads like a movie-the reader is pulled into the fast paced action, the anger, the angst and the chase as Matthias Chalmers must find the stolen formula or face the possibility of his own death and the death of everyone he loves and knows. Chaz Thompson has written an amazing storyline that will fascinate as well as examine the possibilities of a pharmaceutical discovery that could change the concept of body, soul and life ever lasting.

Interview white:black

TRC: Hi Chaz and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Facebook

Chaz Thompson 2012Chaz: Born in the very early ’50s I am now on the brink of retirement. I dropped out of high school in 1969 and literally joined the circus. Just one of those southern Californian, suburban street-corner Barnum and Bailey “mini” circuses, but a circus, nonetheless. They had me cleaning up after the elephants and I imagined a cinematic life of adventure. They promised me a place on the payroll if I showed up in the morning. I was seventeen. When I returned the following morning with my guitar, the street corner was vacant.

So I hitchhiked around, ended up in Wisconsin where I played clubs and pubs and the ever-familiar street-corner. When Disco arrived it killed my folk-singing, songwriting career, so I took a job as a clerk at the Madison Capitol building. This introduced me to graphics and I spent the next thirty years as a graphic artist.

Tell me when to stop. I married twice, fathered a handful of children (whom I adore to this day) and left graphics for a career in Real Estate at the exact moment of our recent economic meltdown. Hello customer service.

Along the way, I began writing screenplays and short stories and novels, and when the Self-Publishing boom developed I eagerly took advantage of the opportunity. Which brings us to today.

Stairway2 HeavenTRC: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is your latest release. A sci-fi, dystopian look at the 22nd century. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Chaz: I understand STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN gets classified as dystopian, but I don’t really see it that way. I neither praise nor condemn our social future, and try to represent it as a mish-mash of advancements and setbacks. I chose the future simply because I wanted to control the environment in which this mystical event could occur.

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration for Stairway2 Heaven- the novel?

Chaz: About thirty years ago I wrote a short story called “Concrete Eden” which contained some of the basic plot elements and the focus of the soul becoming disengaged from the human body. Since I wrote many, many short stories, it got lost in the drawer with the rest. Back when Geocities was popular I dug out the story of the “soul-stealer” and posted it, but it wasn’t until early 2012 that I stumbled upon it and decided to flesh out the characters. I’ve studied mysticism and physics off and on, and found the premise ideal for combining my own observations on the two. I came up with a suitable ending and voila!

The title is actually a tongue-in-cheek formula that reads Stairway(squared) equals Heaven. The Stairway(squared) represents the link between our daily experience and our connection with divinity. It also implies it’s a two-way street, a notion frowned upon by most established religions.

TRC: What research challenges or difficulties (logistical, medical, theologian) did you encounter when writing this particular novel?

Chaz: Research was a combination of what I had studied on the subjects of mysticism and physics prior to writing the story, and acquiring knowledge of Europe for the events that took place there, specifically Italy, since I have never traveled overseas. I will be eternally grateful for YouTube and Wikepedia. I am inherently an impatient writer, so the challenge was to patiently describe the environments in a manner that would engage the reader and not slow down the narrative.

TRC: If you gave your leading character Matthias an opportunity to speak for himself, what would he have to say?

Chaz: Matthias Chalmers is a very jaded, fatalistic individual, but by the end of the story he has come to a place where he has to admit that if Life doesn’t always make sense, at least we do have some sense of control, whether we admit to it or not. And his basic summary of his experience are the final words of the novel. However, he might address the world at large with these words: “I love you all, but leave me alone.”

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about the storyline premise?

Chaz: That I am anti-Christian. Whereas I am certainly suspicious of the true motives of most corporate religions, every living consciousness deserves to benefit or suffer according to their own choices, physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. I would never dream of encouraging anyone to abandon their commitment to their church or temple or whatever based on my personal beliefs. The events in STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN reflect a dramatic fiction meant to represent ideals and concepts.

TRC: Many authors bound ideas and information with other authors or family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Chaz: My wife and a select collection of very twisted friends. And the secret society of personalities between my ears.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Chaz: My goals are very generic, looking out ten years. Fundamental happiness through the experience of success, expression of creativity, and love. Specifically, I hope to achieve these through writing and my personal relationships.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about yourself?

Chaz: That I am secretive, anti-social even.

TRC: If you could select one reality show in which you were one of the contestants, which show would you choose and why?

Chaz: Oh, I loathe reality programs. The best reality show is out my window. The thing is, a window is a two-way portal.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Chaz: My next novel is the story of the relationship between two prostitutes, one of them has an ability which can only be described as paranormal (there I go being secretive again), and the other woman is homicidal.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Chaz: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is my attempt to offer a unique concept to anyone brave enough to read the story. I recommend no specific doctrine of knowledge or behavior, just the willingness and enthusiasm to venture toward new ideas, to expand deliberately.

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl’s body isn’t just unknown, it’s anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.
