ABOUT THE BOOK: Released April 10, 2013

Owen Johnson’s day was progressing just like it did for most other teenagers. By lunchtime he had climbed a tall building using abilities usually reserved for superheroes; he’d flirted with the girl he had secretly adored for years; he’d come home to find his dad had been kidnapped and a mysterious stranger standing in his living room; and finally he’d been rescued by the elderly woman next door who had suddenly revealed that she had the power to launch people through the air.

“The Remarkables” introduces Owen Johnson to the world of The Remarkables, a group of seemingly ageless war heroes, each possessing unique gifts that had been used to fight evil. Now they must help Owen find his dad, and uncover a new threat to our way of life. Along their journey Owen slowly starts to learn the secrets of his past, and uncovers surprising truths about himself and those that he thought he knew: some of which he is glad to learn, some he may wish he hadn’t.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE REMARKABLES is the first storyline in A.D.Elliott’s YA sci-fi/fantasy series focusing on sixteen year old Owen Johnson and a group of gifted men and women who call themselves The Remarkables. Not quite the X-men or Marvel Comic heroes, The Remarkables have certain abilities that allow them to pull their powers from the elements such as wind, fire and water. Owen Johnson is about to learn what it really means to be special.

The Remarkables is a super hero storyline but not one that involves costumes or over-the-top abilities. Many are gifted with psychic powers while others have the ability to pull their strengths and gifts from other worlds. The group has been hunted for decades but with Owen’s full potential about to be revealed, they can no longer hide in plain sight as Owen has become the number one Remarkable on the hit list of super heroes. On the run, Owen and the others will find themselves pulled into a struggle of good vs evil.

The storyline reads more like a middle grade novel rather than young adult. This is an adventure storyline where the young hero must use his powers to save the people that he knows and loves, but in true super hero storylines, it is never that easy.

Many secondary characters are introduced whose backstory and history were only hinted at or alluded to. There are many unexplained scenarios about The Remarkables that have yet to be answered and this left me with some issues of coherency and cohesion. I kept asking myself-How and Why -but apparently The Remarkables is the first book in a series (by virtue of the ending) and hopefully many of the questions and unknowns will be answered in the next book.

Overall, THE REMARKABLES is a cute adventure storyline but one that I believe will be of interest to a select audience-perhaps young boys and girls who dream that they too will one day be able to fly and walk through walls. If you have a tween who likes to read stories of adventure, science fiction and super heroes with magical abilities then The Remarkables is the perfect summer read.

ATTACK OF THE AUTOMOTONS (Airship Adventure Chronicles #3-Vol 1) by Lara Nance

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release February 2013

The adventure continues as Lady Arabella, Rett and friends chase after the evil Dr. Krakov in hopes they can stop his attack on Aereopolis. Faced with albino cannibal pygmies, snow monsters and angry mountain men, while fighting devastating storms against impossible odds, they are forced to use every possible resource to stay alive. Krakov escapes all attempts to thwart him and rains his deadly automatons on the capital city in a conflagration that will spread to the entire world. Belle and Rett must put their feelings for each other on hold while they face the evil doctor in a final showdown for the fate of all mankind.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: ATTACK OF THE AUTOMATONS is the third storyline in Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles-Volume one. Although this installment wraps up this particular arc, there is plenty of room for future storylines.

Once again, Lara Nance takes the reader on an ‘Indiana Jones’ style airship adventure around the imaginary globe to places with mythical flesh eating creatures, the open waters of the ocean, the dry arid desert and the frozen tundra of a snow bound land. When last we saw Belle, Rett and the gang, they were still in pursuit of the infamous Dr. Krakov.

This particular storyline focuses more on the journey and the hazards of flying with limited supplies and fuel. The crew must battle winter storms and cannibals, a dwindling supply of fuel, a struggle to keep the airship afloat, the angst and anxiety of two people who refuse to acknowledge their love-all the while sending messages back to the queen about an impending war between the humans on earth and Dr. Krakov’s army of armed and dangerous automotons (robots). Thank goodness for the talented and crazy ideas of Benji-Belle’s foster brother-who continues to amaze and astound the others with his inventions for and against armed attack. Without Benji, they would have died within the first couple of chapters of book one.

Lara Nance pulls the reader into a fantasy world where science fiction meets the industrial revolution resulting in the steampunk writing genre where your imagination can go wild with any number of mechanical and steam driven inventions. Attack of the Automotons is a story of adventure and the building relationship, albeit frustrating, between Belle and Rett but in the end, Belle knows where her heart belongs.

If you like steampunk airship travel adventures ala Indian Jones and the wild west (think about the TV show or movie WILD, WILD WEST), Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles is a fascinating series and one that will peak your curiosity about steampunk and science fiction.

The Allure of Steampunk
By Lara Nance

So, what is it about steampunk that is alluring?

Perhaps you’ve thought about writing a steampunk novel? Now may be the best time ever. Or maybe you’d like to try reading a book in that genre but don’t know where to start.

Lara Nance Steampunk Trilogy

First of all, What is steampunk? There are as many definitions as there are people giving them. Here’s mine:

AutomotonIt’s a Victorian themed world, where steam is the power of the day, running everything from furnaces to automatons. There are iconic images that pop up in this world, such as: corsets (worn on the outside, of course), goggles, top hats, pocket watches, airships, an occasional octopus, and lots of gadgets made from clockwork parts.

People are flocking to steampunk. The last convention I attended, Steamcon IV in Seattle this past October, had around 3,000 attendants. And that’s only one of hundreds of other conventions and events around the world. You can check out information about conventions and local groups at www.airshipambassador.com

What’s the allure? Speaking for myself, I think it’s the romance of the era. There’s adventure on every corner with airship pirates, mad scientists and clockwork monsters. Fashion is at the forefront with everything from bustled satin ball-gowns, to bustiers and fishnet hose, to leather, chains and studs.

SteampunkCostumes

Some people say steampunk is when Goths discovered the color brown…But the beauty of steampunk is that you make of it what you want. You can go for a genteel Victorian flavor or a leather bristling with weapons look. Or, a combination of the two. If you don’t want to create your own outfit, there are shops on the internet with everything you need. My favorites are steampunkthreads.com and clockworkcouture.com. Etsy has a huge variety of folks selling their original steampunk jewelry.

Inventions are key. You can invent a steam powered computer or a clockwork robot. Weapons are only as limited as your imagination, as long as you stick to the clockwork/steam scenario.

For the winter fashion shows I saw major fashion designers incorporate steampunk into their fall lines, Movies add steampunk elements that never existed in the original story (think Three Musketeers with its airships and corsets, even Oz had some goggles), TV shows focusing a segment on the steampunk culture (remember the Castle episode?). Take a look at women’s boots these days – you’ll see lots of buckles and retro styling.

Now there are steampunk themed restaurants like this one: http://steamhausgastropub.com

How about a steampunk card game: http://growingupgamers.blogspot.com/2012/11/ruse-steampunk-murder-mystery.html

Want to play an online steampunk game? Try Steampunk Odyssey here: http://www.begamer.com/flash-game/242519/steampunk-odyssey

Okay, you get the picture. Steampunk is everywhere.

In 2012, people said steampunk had peaked. But in my opinion, the culture is on the rise. A recent IBM analysis said steampunk is on the rise to emerge from sub-culture to mainstream. On-line games and series are coming out everyday, new cons are popping up everywhere, and new books are coming out with interesting steampunk characters and environments.

SpectaclesSo, if you’re interested in writing or reading steampunk, the time is now. You can choose between a variety of base genres in which to incorporate the steampunk theme. Sci-fi, fantasy, romance or mystery/thriller. Add some spunky, resourceful, characters and a splash of imaginative adventure and you’ve got a steampunk novel. Don’t forget to add a sprinkle of goggles, top hats, and corsets!

Don’t forget the father of steampunk (in my humble opinion), Jules Verne. His book, Around the World in Eighty Days inspired my own trilogy. Books like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, are great examples of an imaginative high-tech Victorian era.

If you’re looking for movies, check out The Golden Compass, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Wild Wild West, or Hugo. They’ll give you some great images of different steampunk worlds.

Some people argue whether steampunk is alternate universe or alternate history. To me, it’s both…or either. It’s what you want it to be. And that’s the beauty of this genre– freedom to create an imaginary world, or simply say “what if” within the real Victorian world. You can add magic, or paranormal creatures, or stick with plain old humans.

This is a chance to unleash your imagination and take a new look at the world through a pair of goggles. Steampunk folks are some of the most imaginative people I’ve ever met. And they definitely know their history. So if you plan on using real historical events in your novel, do your research and get it right.

Oh, by the way, you’ll have to learn the proper way to drink absinthe, too.

Revenge of the Mad ScientistRight now the first book in my steampunk trilogy, Revenge of the Mad Scientist, is only 99 cents on Kindle. It’s a great time to give steampunk a try!

Description:
Cody Miller’s lifelong desire to serve and protect the country he loves is a reality now, thanks to the Vietnam War. He has served honorably and well, and he’s about to be sent back to the States…along with the woman he loves. But just as his dreams are about to come true, a tragedy strikes, giving him the opportunity to protect an angel of mercy…but at great cost to himself. Cody wakes up in a veterans’ hospital believing that he has nothing left to live for. With a cold and angry heart, his only wish is to ride into the Colorado wilderness, never to be seen again. But Cody doesn’t know that destiny is following him in a way he doesn’t expect. Will it reach him in time? Annie is a deftly plotted, richly characterized novel that illuminates the physical and emotional realities of war with vividness and compassion to create a deeply satisfying story.

Review:

Annie begins with Cody and his men on a four day patrol during the Vietnam War.  They’re wet, tired and on edge, and can’t wait to get back to their base.  Because once they get back, Cody will ask the woman he loves to be his wife and all will be right in his world.  Just as Cody asks Annie to marry him, the NCO club is attacked and all goes black for Cody.  Once he awakens, he discovers that he’s been in a coma for four months and he’s now lost everyone he’s ever loved.  He’s eventually discharged from the hospital and heads back to Colorado to take care of a few things and disappear into the Colorado mountains to deal with everything that’s happened…..alone.  But, it seems that fate isn’t finished with him yet.

I have struggled with this review.  Probably more than any I’ve ever written.  The story is a sweet one and realistic in the portrayals of the hells of war and the chaos that ensues.  It’s a short, fast read.  I read the blurb and saw how short the book was and was prepared to not like it…….at all.  Well, that thought went to hell in a hand basket.  Even though the story is short, coming in at 144 pages, it covered all of the bases.  The descriptive dialogue of the jungles of Vietnam, to the thoughts that go through Cody’s mind as he struggles to come to terms with what has happened, are very well written.  As I read the book, it was as if I could hear Cody telling me his story.  The story is slow paced, which usually kills a book for me, but for some reason, this one worked.  And it worked well.  I do wish that it had been a little longer so that we could find out the back story for some of the supporting characters though.  As I said before, this is a sweet love story with a teary moment or two, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

SOMEONE ELSE’S SKYE
Men of Brahm Hill, Book 1
Coming October 1, 2013

Someone Else's Skye

Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he’s sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.

It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in her, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

Where Do Characters Come From?

I’m often asked if my characters are based on real people, and when I say no, I am sometimes met with doubt. “It’s fiction,” I say. “I made it up.” And a few times, I have received the great compliment of someone saying…“But it seems so real. Why is that, do you think?” To this latter question, I usually shrug and repeat, “I made it up.” I recently had this conversation with someone who had read an advanced edition of UNTIL SHE COMES HOME, and when again met with doubt, I decided to give it some thought.

One of the things I most enjoy about the writing process is the hands-on research.  When I knew Grace, one of my main characters, would struggle to master the art of pierogi making, I decided to give it a try. I watched a YouTube video, purchased all the ingredients and set out to roll, stuff and boil pierogi. Because I added too little flour, the dough stuck to my fingers in large white clumps, and so the same clumps stuck to Grace’s fingers. When I rolled the dough too thin, Grace rolled the dough too thin. When I over stuffed the crescent-shaped dumpling and the potato filling bled into the hot water, Grace did the same

Another of my characters, Malina, would take a hammer from her husband’s garage because she was certain she would need it for protection when venturing out on a particular night. Would she be able to manage that hammer with one hand, I wondered, or would she need two? And so I rummaged around my husband’s workshop until I found a weighty hammer and I gave it a few swings—first one-handed and then two-handed.  I would definitely need two hands to maneuver the hammer with confidence, and so Malina would need the same.

And then there was Julia. When I knew she would face the fear that the worst had happened to her twin nieces, I thought back to an afternoon several years ago when I was sitting in a Kansas City mall and saw a woman run screaming from the Gymboree store. I don’t remember the name she was screaming, only the sound of her voice and the way her hair was suddenly tousled and her face red, her skin damp.  She had lost her toddler. The woman ran only a few steps before she spotted the little one near the exit. But that scream, which I will never forget, is the same one Julia uses and the same one Malina hears.

Finally, when wanting to show a great friendship between two women, I thought about the friend who I have coffee with a couple of times a week. She makes me laugh until my sides ache and tears run from the corners of my eyes. This is the type of friendship I wanted for Grace and Julia. Grace is the one who does the laughing. Julia is the one who triggers it.

Having thought it through, I realize that perhaps people have been right to doubt me.  When next I am asked if the characters are based on real people, I will say there is a little bit of me in each of them, but when all is said and done, I made it all up.

Review:

Until She Comes Home is Lori Roy’s second novel.  Last year I read her first book, Bent Road and said at that time, she was an excellent writer, and we should expect more of the same from her.  Well I can safely say, she has done it again.  Until She Comes Home is a suspense story of two tragedies that take place in the same neighborhood in Detroit.  It is a somber and tension filled story of how these murders intermingle, during a time of racial conflict, and how it causes everything to slowly crumble.

We meet the ladies early on, as they all are at Grace’s house for an afternoon get together. We meet Grace, who is pregnant, and her best friend Julia, who is taking care of her two nieces. Malina is another of the wives we meet, and we learn that her husband is cheating on her with one of the prostitutes who hang around the factory where many of the men work.  Malina goes one evening to follow him, only to come face to face with a few of “colored ladies” who know why she is there.  The next day, one of the those woman is found dead.  Malina is worried her husband is responsible, and is desperate to hide that she tried to follow him.

At a get together at Grace’s house, the gossip is about the murder in town.  Malina is the one doing most of the talking.  During this time, we meet Elizabeth, who is somewhat handicapped mentally, and Grace, keeps an eye on her.  When it is time to get Elizabeth home, Grace makes sure Julia walks her home.  That night, Elizabeth is found to be missing, and the neighborhood joins forces to search for her.  All the men take turns, leaving no stone unturned, but to no avail, Elizabeth remains missing. Everyone fears the worse.

A day or so later, while she is in her garage, Grace is attacked by three men, one of whom rapes her.  Grace’s mother finds her, and cleans her up. She tells Grace to never tell anyone, especially her husband what happened, because he will never look at her the same.  Also in this mix is Julia’s two nieces, who may have witnessed something bad that happened to Grace, but they are afraid to say anything. Despite being warned to stay in the house, they continue to go about and find themselves getting into trouble.

What follows is a tense story of how the murder of the prostitute, and the disappearance of Elizabeth effect everyone and turns their lives around.  The secrets, the fears, and the betrayals divide everyone, creating dangerous situations.

Does Grace tell her husband and the police the truth, to help find the men who may have done the same thing to Elizabeth; or does she hide the truth to save her marriage?  What secrets does Julia discover about her husband that threatens their marriage?  Will Malina continue to hide where she was the night of the murder, and to what will she go through to protect herself?

Lori Roy does a fantastic job in this suspenseful and tense tale of a neighborhood that seemed a perfect place to live, become a cesspool of lies and secrets.  Roy slowly rips the masks of their lives, and shows us what is underneath in the face of tragedy.  The key here is that she does this so flawlessly.  This was a very intense story, very well written, with so many emotional moments, that I found myself thinking about this book for two days before I wrote this review.

ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE (The Perfect Man) by Vicki Lewis Thompson

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 21, 2013

Growing up on a ranch, Melanie Shaw always assumed she’d end up with a strong, protective cowboy someday. Before she settles down, though, she decides to take a romantic adventure in Paris, a city she longs to explore. But on the first day of her getaway, Melanie winds up in trouble and is rescued by an unlikely stranger-the handsomest Texan she’s ever seen. He may not be a cowboy, but what girl can resist a billionaire who wants to take her on a whirlwind tour of the City of Lights? And when the romance between them heats up, Melanie realizes that she may have found her perfect man where she least expected.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ONE NIGHT WITH A BILLIONAIRE is the first novella in Vickie Lewis Thompson’s The Perfect Man series. Focusing on three friends from Texas, the first storyline finds Melanie Shaw, alone in the romantic city of Paris, France when her friends are unable to make the long awaited European vacation. Things go from bad to worse when Melanie finds herself the victim of a mugging and all of her money is now in the hands of a Parisian thief. Enter Drew –a fellow Texan; a billionaire; and Melanie’s savior. Within a matter of a few minutes, Drew has come to Melanie’s rescue, offers his home and car and planned out her Paris itinerary down to the last minute. Along the way, the couple will soon realize, that they have more in common than Paris and a Texas twang-they are perfect for each other in every way-almost too perfect. Drew likes to rescue people and things and Melanie is ripe for the rescuing.

The story is a novella, therefore everything happens rather quickly-from a rescue by Drew to the final kiss-five days will pass and an entire lifetime of promises is vowed and a happily ever after. There is no angst; no mystery; no suspense and no conflict. There was nothing to propel the storyline forward. The writing is simple; the plotline is very predictable but it is the one-on-one conversations between Drew and Melanie that are difficult to accept-almost adolescent in context. I thought I was reading a story written by a teenage girl. The quality or perhaps the style of the writing was less than stellar.

I am not sure how to describe my feelings about this particular book, but for all intents and purposes, I was disappointed. And as for the title, there was more than ONE night with a billionaire. In fact there were five nights with this particular billionaire, which made me curious as to the selection of the title. The sex scenes were romantic but again, the talk between the couple would have been best left off the pages. I was rather uncomfortable with their sex talk-it felt off; stilted; juvenile.

Sadly, One Night With a Billionaire did not live up to my expectations, although I am not sure what I was expecting. But I know, this was not it.
