Interview-Gold
Hi Theresa.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Theresa: Hi Barb, Thanks so much for having me on The Reading Café, today! I married my high school sweetheart thirty years ago and I have four great kids-- 19-26yrs old.  I haven’t killed any of them yet, so I’d say I’m eminently qualified to write about families and relationships.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Theresa: I’m that rare writer who didn’t know in the womb that I wanted to write.  As a kid, I enjoyed telling stories, but was diagnosed as dyslexic in the third grade, so the execution of writing wasn’t much fun.  I always loved reading romances, but I didn’t start writing until raising my kids.  I thought my calling in life was to be a stay-at-home mom, but who knew how exhausting and thankless that job could be?

Not that my kids were terrors—they weren’t.  But they’re kids.  Four of them—one of me.  You do the math.

So writing was a terrific intelligent, creative outlet.  I could create the perfect man, and when he pissed me off I could punish him in ways that didn’t get me thrown into jail.  And then I also got to enjoy the fun of making up with my sexy hero—without committing adultery.  Win-win.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Theresa: Writing is a ton of fun—that’s why I do it.  When it’s not fun anymore, I’ll stop.  The thing that is most challenging about writing for me is  . . . well, let’s just say having sex, is a WHOLE lot easier and more exciting than writing it.

TRC: Can you please tell us how you came up with the idea of He Belongs to Me? Is this a standalone book, if not, how many books do you plan?

Theresa: He Belongs to Me is a standalone book, but I have a second book, Just Destiny, coming out in the fall.  Back in the late 1990s, shaken baby syndrome was a popular or new concept. I read about a young couple where the boy was accused of shaking his baby to death. When it went to trial, the young man was undisputedly acquitted, but I couldn’t help but wonder how this tragic experience had irreparably changed them.

How could they go on and salvage their marriage? How could their love survive? His son died in his hands. How could he not subconsciously feel like he had killed the baby? How could they move on to create a happy family with this horrible legacy? Hence, He Belongs to Me was born.

He Belongs to me
TRC: Would you please give us a brief description of He Belongs to Me?

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository / Kobo

Theresa: Catherine Boyd will do anything to regain custody of her young son...Even reconcile with the husband accused of killing their son’s twin.  Catherine graduates from college, eager to start a new life with her six-year-old son, Drew. But when she tries to bring him home, her parents refuse to relinquish control of the grandson they’d raised.

Wrongly accused of a horrible crime, Thomas Boyd has buried himself in his career, determined to forget his painful past and the family he lost. But now, five years later, Catherine is back, requesting his help to regain custody of their son — custody he thought she had.

Though older and wiser, when courtroom battles reveal lies and secrets and generations of pain, will Thomas and Catherine find more tragedy and loss, or will old wounds finally heal?

TRC: Can you tell us what are you currently working on?

Theresa: I’m finishing polishing my next women’s fiction book, Just Destiny.

Jenny is a beautiful young woman whose seemingly perfect marriage to Gabe is shattered by a tragic accident that leaves her husband brain dead. Devastated at the sudden loss, she decides to preserve the best of their love by harvesting Gabe’s sperm for later insemination. But her husband’s powerful, grieving uncle, the man who raised him, thinks of Jenny as a gold digger and is willing to risk exposing long-held family secrets in court to stop her.

The prospect of a grueling trial tests Jenny’s resolve, until an unexpected ally comes to her aid giving her the opportunity to win and the possibility of a second chance at happiness.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Theresa: My process?  I marinate a bunch and then spew.  I’m a spewer—and it’d not pretty.  I’m a little OCD, so I’m a planner.  I think about the story a bunch—who the characters are, what they want, why they can’t have it, then I work out the major plot points.  I get to know my characters fairly well.

I usually like to find a picture of what they look like and then print them all out and put them in a frame or on a poster board and keep them nearby—just for reference—I don’t know, maybe for company.

But once I have a fairly good handle on my characters and what’s going to happen, I’ll sit down and just spew.  I’ll write the story as quickly as I can, writing just dialogue and notes—like, “Set scene”, “description”, “what IS she thinking?”,  “Reaction here” I just get the story out.  Then after I leave it alone a week or so, I’ll go back in and spend months clean it up and layer in all the good stuff.

I’m not really particular when I write.  Inspiration comes to some people in the shower—me?  When I sleep.  And I’m not nearly as smart as I thought I was. I’ve learned that when that brilliant idea, that is so freaking AMAZING there is NO WAY I could forget it, comes to me in the middle of the night. . . I’d better get up and start writing, ‘cause I’m an idiot and I WILL forget.  Every. Dang. Time.  So I write it down immediately.

I mostly write in my study, then when my butt gets sore, I’ll take my laptop into the kitchen and stand at the counter for awhile, then when I’m tired of that, I’ll wander upstairs to my bedroom and sit on my bed.  Yeah, a laptop is a non-negotiable item for me.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with family and friends.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Theresa: I bounce ideas off my writing pals and select friends and family who have a knack for plotting or are really insightful about people.  But other writers who don’t writing in my genre are really my best problem-solves when I’m stuck on something.

TRC: Is there anything in particular that you have always dreamed of doing, and have not yet done so?

Theresa: I’ve always dreamed of designing and building my own house.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Theresa: I hope you enjoy Catherine and Thomas’s story.

Review:

4.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW!  JUST WOW!  What a serious intense read that was.  I don’t think I have ever cried this much over a book.  OH MY HEART was pulled and pushed, squeezed and there were times I thought I couldn’t read any more because I felt so raw (small disclaimer here as I have a hard time reading anything about children torn from their parents or young children dying, so I might be ultra sensitive here).  In actuality this was a hard read for me as it was so emotional and left me feeling icky and good all at the same time!  Hard to explain that, and honestly as worthy of the 4.5 stars this book gets from me, I can say I will not reread!

He Belongs To Me by Theresa Rizzo is a contemporary read that yes is classified as romance.  However, while romance is such an integral part of the story, it wasn’t the end all be all to this book.  I really believe that this should be also classified as some kind of court/suspense as well.

Catherine Boyd is our leading lady.  She has grown up in a life or order and privilege.  She marries Thomas Boyd (our leading man and her ultimate soul mate) at a very young age due to lust and love and pretty much goes against her parents wishes.  Catherine and Thomas soon discover that they are expecting twins.  Shortly after the birth of the twin boys, one of them sadly passes away.  Thomas is then accused of his son’s death and undergoes a trial only to be found innocent.  But the damage is done!  The marriage is pulled apart and after some nasty words from Catherine, Thomas packs his bags and leaves (although unknown to Catherine, never really stops checking in)!

While Catherine is in a serious emotional state, her parents convince her to go back to college out of town and they will take care of her other son Andrew (Drew).  She believes she signs over temp custody for the duration of her education and will be reunited with Drew once she is stable with a home and a job.  Graduation comes, as does the time for her to get her son back.  HOWEVER …. asshat daddy bigbucks (I am being so kind using that term) promptly tells her that she will not have her son unless she moves back home and begins the live that they have chosen for her.  Then it is revealed that she was tricked into signing permanent custody (to her parents) papers and that she is not entitled to have her son back!

Catherine decides to play hard ball with idiotstick dad and goes back to find the husband that she never quite divorced.  Thomas agrees to a temporary reconciliation to get their son back.  They move into a house together, in public play the happy “trying to make it work” couple but deep inside they both still have so much unresolved with each other that you wonder if these two will ever really have a chance to make it work!  They fight the natural attraction they have for each other as they are fearful of loving deeply and trusting one another again!  They need to learn how to be parents to a little boy they hardly know but love so very much.

We are taken through an intense and incredible court room battle where dirty secrets are revealed, anger is thrown about so freely and where as a reader you truely have no clue where this ending is going to go!  You read all about a deception and betrayal so unthinkable it boils your blood to have to read about it.  The ending … well … ya …. I’ll leave it at that!  😉

I love a book that takes you on a rollercoaster and the box of kleenex that was beside me was evidence that I had one heck of a ride.  Why the 4.5 and not the 5 you ask then??? EASY!  At times I felt there was a little too much angst.  I get that this was THAT kind of book, and maybe it was my own mindset, but I wanted more happy!

Theresa Rizzo writes beautifully.  Her courtroom scenes were my fave and she writes a pretty great romance scene too!  LOL  I hope to read more of her in the near future!

So, do Catherine and Thomas rekindle and make it?  Who does Drew end up with?  Grandma and Grandpa “we think the world revolves around us because we are pompous asses with money” or Mommy and Daddy “we have finally understood that we need to grow up already to be the best parents we can be”?

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Description:
Meet Arthur Penhaligon on the day his life changes – forever.
On the day he skateboards into the past, discovering a world of magic and mystery; unaware that he was chosen before birth to fulfil a unique destiny.

All Arthur really wants is to have a normal life, doing normal things.
But unknown to him, before he was born – a very long time before – Arthur was chosen.
And that will mean that his life is going to be anything but ordinary.
Skate-boarding down his local street he is suddenly aware that everyone has disappeared, except for just one man, a sinister stranger – and a crow. And the stranger is waiting for him.

Arthur and his friends, Nick and Tamar, quickly find themselves pulled into a strange world of deep magic, mystery and danger.
A world involving the murderous Crow Man, and Matearnas – the self-crowned Queen of Cornwall, determined to rob Arthur of his ancient birthright.
At any cost.

Normal is just about to go out of the window.

Review:
The Golden Sword, set in Cornwall, England, centuries after the rise and fall of Camelot, is about Arthur Penhaligon, a young boy destined for big things.  Author, Rosie Morgan, tells a lovely story about a normal teenager with normal wishes for a great summer.  When peculiar events interfere with said plans and can no longer go ignored, Arthur innately rises to the occasion.  Great-Uncle Lance must have had something to do with that?

Arthur is being stalked by a man wearing a long coat and wide-brimmed hat…and a crow.  From their first encounter, “the stranger slowly and deliberately raised one arm and pointed right at him” to a near confrontation that riled up and assembled a charming cast of cats in Arthur’s defense.  These surreptitious visits would soon turn more menacing and set off a series of events linking Arthur to the legendary past…and his imminent future.

Rosie Morgan is not retelling the legend of King Arthur – rather, she’s preparing the stage (and a sequel, I hope!), for young Arthur’s remarkable destiny.  Armed with Tamar and Nick as his trusty sidekicks (headed for the current-day Round Table?), “they were a force to be reckoned with when they were on the same side”.

Fortuitous meetings with members of the “Watchers” slowly, but assuredly, place Arthur in line for a triumphant conclusion.  Good versus evil ensues and Arthur faces Matearnas, an adversary unwilling to relinquish her “guardianship” over the land.  In spite of his disbelief over the impossible circumstances that have invaded his life, Arthur displays faith and allows fate to dictate his actions.  In a nod to the legend, Bedivere, a knight and loyal follower of King Arthur indicates to young Arthur that he is in fact The One:

“There are more things under the heavens than we can ever imagine, Sire.”

At 187 pages, lots of authors would overwhelm you and cram details.  This is an unhurried, albeit slow-paced, story of a boy gathering his troops for more adventures.  Will they all be of heroic proportions?  Who knows, but if Ms. Morgan supplies us with enchanting new quests, I’m reading!  The Golden Sword appeals to all ages and I think that’s important for the YA audience when, undoubtedly, the past will encounter the present.  Ms. Morgan entwines a brief history lesson while delivering a thoroughly enjoyable read about Arthur’s journey.

About the Book: Release April 2013

They thought the nightmare was over. Intern Jill Raney and the man she loves, obstetrical resident David Levine, barely escaped death at the hands of a madman on the steep roof of an old part of the hospital. The awful scene, captured by overhead news choppers, became a media obsession, run horrifyingly over and over. Jill and David are now reluctant “celebrities” – and the targets of every wacko who wants to share in the attention.

Including a killer. Someone who begins venting his fury at their “fame” by his hideous assaults on women – assaults which Jill and David discover are also death threats to them, and to a 6-month-old baby who has yet to be born.

Their predator is clever. Haughty. Leaves cryptic “clues” to taunt them and the police, who are at a loss. He knows how to leave no physical evidence behind. No prints, no fibers, no eyewitnesses.

Jill and David must still return to their exhausting hospital duties, knowing that any psycho can just walk into a hospital. Friends beg David, who is a crack shot, to carry a gun, but he doesn’t. “What’s the use?” he asks. “A doctor’s back is always turned.”

Instead, Jill and David join forces to become detectives on their own, helping the police in ways that even forensics experts never imagined; working frantically to uncover an unspeakable secret that dooms their fate and that of a sweet-faced, unborn child…unless they can put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

Review:

What to say…..what to say…………I am as a rule, normally, a romance reader. So, when I was approached about reading and reviewing this book, I was a bit skeptical when I realized that it is a suspense-thriller. Well, a lot, actually. But, I had already agreed to read it, so off to read I went…………. And, holy hell, what a read it was. Both this book, and the first, start from the first page and DOES.NOT.STOP……….. The suspense is continuous, to the point where I had to walk away for a bit. The subject matter is pretty brutal and, in my humble opinion, not for the faint of heart. Some may find it hard to read, due to said subject matter, BUT, if you can convince yourself (as I did) that this is FICTION, you will fly through the story.

Schneider has written her characters so well, that I felt that I actually knew them. Jill and David make a great team. The supporting characters are great as well, but to be honest, I did find myself getting a little confused as to who was whom and what they had contributed earlier, or if they had at all. I think that in itself may be a testament to how realistic this story seems. Having lots of friends and family that are doctors, nurses, etc., the scenes at the clinic and hospital played out before my eyes as I read the story.

As I said, some of the book is tough to read. But, I for one am glad that I did. I look forward to the next installment!!

Interview beige

TRC: Hi J.A. and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW J.A: Website / Goodreads/ Twitter/ Facebook

J.A.SchneiderJ.A.: I’m a former staffer at Newsweek. Words and story ideas are always teeming in my head – a crazy colorful place! I’m a wife, mother of two adult children, and I love thrillers and mysteries. Once a Liberal Arts major (French and Spanish Literature), I’ve become increasingly fascinated with medicine and forensic science. Been married for decades to a physician who loves explaining medical concepts which I interweave as I write. EMBRYO is my first ebook. Its sequel, EMBRYO 2: CROSSHAIRS, was released in early April 2013. We live in southern Connecticut.

TRC: Your bio states that you were a exchange student in Russia. Have you ever been back for a visit? If so, how have things changed since your days as a student?

J.A: Haven’t been back, but I know things have changed a lot. Actually I was part of a student exchange between the U.S. and Russia. It was fascinating, but the desire for return visits was stronger to France and Spain. I love both, the people of Spain especially. So warm!

TRC: How did a French Literature major with a minor in Spanish and Russian develop a love for writing medical mystery novels?

J.A.: Life evolves. French I started in the fifth grade, so, being lazy, I opted for a French major because it was familiar and I’d taken all those AP courses. THEN marriage, and decades of hearing medical talk, and the fact that amazing advances in medicine are made constantly… I became fascinated. Have always, always peppered my husband Bob with questions, getting increasingly fascinated. Have also done much volunteering in hospitals.

embryoThe idea for the first EMBRYO came like a lightening bolt when hearing a conversation between Bob (who did OB before switching to Cardiology), and an Ob/Gyn friend who was excited about IVF and its advances in curing diseases in utero. As an author who had already published fiction and non-fiction, I thought about all human discoveries – from fire to atomic energy – and the fact that they can be either good or very bad if they fall into the wrong hands. It was a thought that wouldn’t let go.

Speaking foreign languages is nice, but static. It doesn’t involve the always-new-discoveries excitement and fascination of something like medicine and forensic science.

J.A: I realized that the ending of Embryo created a new crisis…

In Crosshairs, that new crisis was “fame.” Embryo’s heart-stopping final scene has turned Jill and David into reluctant “celebrities” – and the targets of every nut job who wants to share in the attention. Awful, especially since any psycho can just walk into a hospital…

Jill and David must still return to their exhausting hospital duties.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

J.A.: Three. A trilogy. Then I’ll begin a Raney and Levine series which will continue with the same wonderful characters. Jill Raney and David Levine become physician-detectives (they already are in Embryo 2), like an updated Holmes and Watson. How so? In this post-CSI era, bad guys again have the advantage. They know how to leave no physical evidence behind. No prints, no fibers, no eyewitnesses. But Jill and David find ways to help police in ways that even forensics experts never imagined.

TRC: How much research (logistical, historical, medical etc) was involved in the writing of this series?

J.A.: Two previous trad pubbed novels involved a lot of research. They never felt “native, organic” to me, so they came out showing the strain. With the two Embryo books, however, it was easy and a joy. Bob is always near to ask questions as they arise. We both enjoy the process. Every conversation gives rise to another idea or exciting plot point (google Pseudomonas aeruginosa…yeeow). So the research was detailed, and often I’d hit the med books and research more deeply, but it basically was easy and helped the stories flow. I’m also very familiar with hospitals and the life, having accompanied Bob on his rounds, and volunteered.

TRC: Do your storyline characters speak to you and tell you the direction of the story or do you direct the characters?

J.A.: Oh, the characters lead! Especially Jill. She’s reckless and determined in addition to being smart and deeply caring. Her dangerous, against-orders ideas sometimes surprise even me, which is why I don’t use an outline. David and Jill bounce off each other, actually. There are places in Embryo 2 where David gets an idea and it terrifies Jill. So they bicker, but the interplay between them fuels the story – and is sometimes even funny.

TRC: I guess this question would be for your husband – what is his overall interpretation of the medical drama television series currently on the prime time line-up? Reality or closer to fiction?

J.A.: Closer to fiction, sometimes ridiculous and wrong. Actors mispronounce, hold their stethoscopes and X-rays backwards, their EKGs upside down, on and on. Similar to cop shows. Ask any cop how he feels about cop shows… “It’s not like that, I can’t watch that stuff!” they’ll say. Doctors don’t watch doctor shows, and cops don’t watch cop shows.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the major characters in this particular storyline, which actors or models would represent your ideal image?

J.A.: Hmm, someone gorgeous and sexy for David. Jill, I don’t know…

TRC: Many authors face challenges in writing or getting their books to publication. What are some of the difficulties your have faced in your writing career?

J.A.: In the past, with traditional publishers, I had a non-fiction book orphaned by first one editor and then her replacement getting laid off. The economy has decimated publishing houses, including their publicity people. I love the freedom of indie publishing. The one challenge remaining is promotion, but that now applies to trad pubbed authors too. The big houses just don’t promote any more. Except I see them on Twitter too; what a hoot.

TRC: How do you handle (the combination of) the pressure and stress of a deadline and, family life at home?

J.A.: It used to be very, very hard when my children were small. Now that they’re grown and adults out in the world, life and writing are easier. (See? All you have to do is wait twenty years.) Other things still intervene, interrupt, but it’s still hugely easier. And with indie publishing there really aren’t any deadlines, except self-imposed, right?

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

J.A.: Just keep writing, faster and better than ever. I’d love to see a “Raney and Levine” TV series.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

J.A.: Embryo 3

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

J.A.: One of my favorite quotes from the book: A surgical resident friend tells David, “Take the gun! Even cops can’t depend on cops!” That surgical resident is from Houston, where a resident was shot and killed in the E. R. He’s obsessed, correctly, that no cop or hospital security guy can shoot until after violence happens.

Favorite Flower:
Roses. I grow climbers and ramblers which the deer can’t reach, yay. Favorite one is called Laguna rose. Some climbers (they’re shorter, 6-10 feet) bloom June to November. The ramblers are thugs, climb 30 feet up to our house’s second floor. Gorgeous in June-July, but I spend too much time on a ladder. Their thorns are the size of bird-of-prey talons and tear right through my shirtsleeves. People see my scratches and ask if we keep big cats.

TRC: Thank you J.A. for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on the release of Embryo 2. We wish you all the best.

Review:

Tempted by a Cowboy by Vickie Lewis Thompson is the second book in her Perfect Man series.  Tempted by a Cowboy is a cute contemporary romance, that is a fast and relaxing read…perfect for the beach or just a day you want to just lie around and read.

We meet both leads immediately. Astrid, is our heroine, and she is a vet. Astrid has always wanted to be a vet, doing something on her own and something she enjoys.  She keeps the fact that her family is extremely wealthy a secret.  As we start the story, Astrid is helping the birth of a foal, in the barn of Fletch Grayson, our hero.  During the long night, as they await Janis, (named after Janis Joplin) the pregnant horse to deliver, both of them can feel the attraction for each other.  Fletch wants Astrid in the worst way, but he knows she will not mixes business with pleasure.  Since she is a great vet, who cares personally for her animals, he nor she want to lose this business relationship for a night of passion.

Astrid fights her feelings, determined not to go where her body keeps pushing her to do.  On the way home late at night during a rain storm, Astrid’s truck overturns in the deep water over the bridge, and Fletch helps rescue her.  Both feeling the relief that they are alive, let themselves fall to the passion they both want to explore.

What follows is a hot sexual romance that goes beyond one night.  The both find themselves falling hard for each other.  Just when you think nothing will stand in their way for a permanent relationship, Fletch discovers the truth about Astrid, and everything falls apart.  But this is romance, and the norm is a happy ending.  You need to read the book to see how this happens.  This is a cute fast read, with a likeable couple.

An Interview with Tess Thompson

An Interview with Tess Thompson

New-Headshot
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Tess Thompson as our guest today. She is here to discuss her new book, Riverbend, (our reviews are below this post), which was just recently released, and to tell us a little bit about herself.

Before our Interview with Tess, let’s find out a little bit about her.

About the Author black and rose

Tess Thompson is a novelist and playwright. She has a BFA in Drama from the University of Southern California.

After some success as a playwright she decided to write a novel, a dream she’d held since childhood. She began working on her first novel, Riversong while her second daughter was eight months old, writing during naptimes and weekends. She considers it a small miracle and the good-nature of her second child (read: a good napper) that it was ever finished. Riversong was released in April 2011 by Booktrope, a Seattle publisher and subsequently became a #1 Nook book and Kindle best seller. Learn more about Booktrope at www.booktrope.com

Like her main character in Riversong, Tess is from a small town in Southern Oregon. She currently lives in Snoqualmie, Washington with her two small daughters where she is inspired daily by the view of the Cascade Mountains from her home office window.

She was an active member of the theatre community in Seattle as an actor and director during the late nineties. In 2000 she wrote her first full-length play, My Lady’s Hand which subsequently won the 2001 first place prize for new work at the Burien Theatre.

A voracious reader, Tess’s favorite thing to do is to curl up on a rainy afternoon and read a novel. She also enjoys movies, theatre, wine and food. She is fed emotionally by her friends and family and cherishes relationships above all else.

Now let’s meet Tess.

Interview-PurpleHi Tess.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Tess: First, thanks so much for having me. I’m a novelist and mother of two girls, age 7and 10. I live in a suburb of Seattle and am a completely ordinary person, including the ownership of a minivan we affectionately refer to as the “White Whale”. I’m recently divorced, after a twelve year marriage, so this year’s been personally difficult despite great professional success with the books.

TRC: I see on your website that you wrote a play, before embarking on writing your first novel. What made you decide to write a novel, and what are the differences between writing a play and a novel?

Tess: I decided to turn to novels after my first play won a local contest, which included a production. Seeing the play made me understand that the type of stories I wanted to tell (love stories with happy endings) are not really edgy enough for the sensibility of the American theatre. I want to write work that not only entertains but also inspires readers and makes them happy. Women’s fiction is better suited for my ‘voice’.

A play is more limiting and presents unique challenges, in my opinion. With a novel one can describe every detail you want the reader to know about, whereas with a play you’re reliant upon actors, designers and the director.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Tess: Everything. Just kidding. Well, not really. Writing is my passion, but it’s hard work. Some days inspiration comes more easily than others. I call those the ‘flow’ days. My goal is to paint pictures with my words and to write page-turners. It’s always a challenge when you’re really close to something to know if it’s page-turner worthy. So, for me, it’s the inner critic and self-doubt that is the most challenging in the whole process.

RiversongTRC: Can you tell how you came up with the idea of Riversong, your first novel? What is the premise of this series, and how many books are you planning?

Tess: I wanted to set a story in a small town in southern Oregon similar to the one I grew up in because I know that world so well and I think small towns are ripe with drama and quirky characters. Then, I imagined the worst thing that could happen to a woman like me, or one of my friends, and gave Lee Tucker that problem. One of the main premises of the series is to ‘save the town’ by turning it into a tourist destination. With each book in the collection, the gang of misfits gets closer to their goal. I believe there will be five books in the series all together. I keep saying just one more but then the characters beg me to tell their stories and I end up with another one.

RiverbendTRC:  Riverbend, which was just recently released, is your second book in this series. Would you please give us a brief description of Riverbend?

Tess: Just as Annie Bell’s reputation as one of the best chefs in the Pacific Northwest grows to new heights, she receives a threatening phone call from her abusive ex-boyfriend. Marco is out on parole and hungry for revenge, blaming her for his ten-year imprisonment. Fearing for her life and that of her young son, Annie reluctantly accepts help from Drake Webber, a cold and wealthy recluse hiding a dark history of his own. Supported by the gang of misfits from their restaurant Riversong, Annie forges ahead despite her growing terror that Marco will appear at any moment and make good on his threats.

caramel and magnoliasTRC: In February of this year, you released a new standalone novel, Caramel and MagnoliasCan you please give us a brief description of this book?

Tess: Crushed by a broken heart ten years ago, Cleo Tanner walked away from her acting dreams and now leads a quiet, secluded life in Seattle. Sylvia, her best friend from college, is trapped in a loveless marriage, distraught by her inability to conceive a child – until an adoption agency owner in relentless pursuit of Cleo offers to help.

Just as Sylvia begins to experience a profound love that only a mother can feel, a detective approaches Cleo with disturbing questions about the adoption agency. Determined to protect her friend, Cleo jumps into a dangerous investigation that forces her to confront the ghosts of her past.

TRC: Can you tell us what are you currently working on?

Tess: I’m working on the third book in the River Valley Collection, called Riverstar. A movie set comes to River Valley and the main story surrounds two characters, Ben and Bella, whom we first meet in Riverbend.  Ben finds himself the prime suspect in the investigation of a murdered actress on set.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Tess: I write best in the mornings, right after I come home from the gym. I’m a creature of habit - I drop the children off at school, hit the gym and then come home to write until 3, with little breaks here and there. I write in silence – music distracts me too much unless I’m having a particularly uninspired day and then I might put some music on that touches my soul until I find my groove. I have pain and numbness in my right arm unless I sit at my desk and use my ergonomic keyboard, so I always do. I drink like four cups of herbal tea a day because I’m always cold. It’s a problem.

When I write first drafts, I write 2500 words a day, giving myself permission to write fast and furious with no inner critic along for the ride. After I have the first draft done, I go back and painstakingly sweat every word and phrase until I feel like it’s ready to show my editor. I usually send it to her before I feel totally comfortable because otherwise I could mess with it forever. She then sends me pages of notes and I’m off again.

TRC: What are your favorite things you enjoy doing when you are not writing?

Tess: Hanging out with my kids and with friends. Reading. Watching movies and television. Wine. Cooking, sometimes. Dancing. Listening to music. Watching football, especially USC and the Seahawks. Exercise. Dining out.

Review:

Riversong by Tess Thompson is the first book in her The River Valley Collection series.  I was given a chance to read this book, before I reviewed her new release RIVERBEND

Lee had been kicked in the teeth by life, so many times,  if that had been me, I would have given up.

Her mother was a drunk, her father was not on the scene. Lea was a total loner. Her only friend  was the nearby neighbour, Mrs White. We get a look at Lee’s life before she gets her college life. And it is bleak.

Skipping ahead to the future ……. It’s not much better !!  Her husband kills himself after their latest game doesn’t go to plan, leaving Lee with a million dollar debt, and an unplanned pregnancy!  Being chased by a loan shark, Lee is reduced to running back home, and to all the sad memories stored there.

We meet a wide variety of characters in this book, and I am sure I have met a few of these people along the way.

Mrs White is still there, and still a strong woman. Her mother has now died.  Tommy is the singer in the bar that Lee first works in. He is an all round nice guy. He is there for everyone, and he has had his own set of heartbreaks.  The way they dance around their for each other (feelings (the slow way they moved together, he moved forward, she moved back, very much like a dance), especially Lee, was so sweet.

He was so patient with her, his movement reminded me of a cowboy and a spooked horse, he would move towards her, and she would shy away. But he never pushed too quick. She felt guilty of her feelings for Tommy, her husband hasn’t been dead long.

Lee has a hard time believing that she deserves to be happy, she also has a strong grip on her little world, she has to control EVERYTHING, or bad things could happen. When she was approached to start a restaurant, Lee is overwhelmed and terrified.

But with help from the people she meets along the way, Lee creates Riversong. She hasn’t stopped looking over her shoulder, she still expects the loan shark to find her, I think that is one of the reasons she won’t let Tommy and others close. She has to protect herself and others.

I loved how Tess wrote Lee’s story, the love and affection that Lee had for Tommy grew with time, the surprise of a relative, I so didn’t see that coming. Lee took people under her wing, without her even realising it. She faced her crisis one day at a time, she was only running away to the old home, to renovate and sell, not to run away, she had a debt to pay, and she was going to do it. Each character was well thought out, and everyone was a joy to discover. I totally loved this book, it was such a joy to meet these characters.

Review:

Riverbend is the second book in Tess Thompson’s The River Valley Collection.  Wow !!!! I really would recommend that you read the first book in this series. River Song.

Annie was introduced in the last book, as a frump, dumpy, woman who gets verbally abused by her boyfriend. We get a brief glimpse of her life 10 years in the past, in the beginning of the book……

Annie loved to cook, and had aspirations of becoming a chef in a restaurant, it was all she wanted to do. She fell in love with food, and used it to hide behind, when her mothers boyfriend began to show an unhealthy interest in her. She found a job in a restaurant, and also a young man, who saw past the padding and the shyness. She joined a college course. And took lessons from the chef in the restaurant that she worked in.

She fell in love and moved in with Marco.  It felt like all was finally right in her world ……

As soon as Marco had Annie in his control, that was when she saw the REAL Marco. He would start with the little things, until as with most wife beaters, he graduated to his feet and fists.

The turning point for Annie. Realising she was pregnant. She knew she had to get away. So with the money she had hidden from Marco, Annie formed a plan.  I don’t want to spoil the plot, you will have to read that part.

We now skip 10 years into the future. And as we know from the first book, Lee asks Annie to cook for the restaurant, RiverSong. (Annie again is in a bad relationship) But with the love and support of her friends, Annie and Alder (her son) adjust to a life they deserve.  Two years after RiverSong, we join Annie, she loves the home she has for herself and her son. She loves her work, and adores her friends. But Annie never told anyone about Marco. She thought he was gone. She was wrong.

Drake is a new character (I had thought Tess was going to get Annie and Billy together, so glad she didn’t), who also has secrets. We meet Drake as a recluse, who hires Annie to cook for him, (but only to cook, he wants her beautiful recipes to be frozen weekly, and then shipped to him). He lives on the hill, gossips are curious about the man, as was I. He came across as a right A***ole!! Rude, arrogant, and not a nice man.  He thought he could throw money at people, and it would excuse his behaviour. Wrong !! I for one wanted to hit him several times.  He had Annie sign a nondisclosure form. And informed her of a strictly no touching policy!

He liked his privacy and would do all he could to preserve it.

The first day Annie is suppose to cook for Drake, she gets a call from Marco; she is totally freaked, he wants revenge and he knows where she is.

Drake isn’t happy that Alder is with Annie, but tolerates him, barely. Things change between Drake and Annie, when he hears about her violent past, and the abuser who is coming for her. (in fact a little too quick, sorry, but that’s just my opinion).  He insists on Alder and Annie moving into the house on the hill, with its electric fence and high gate. And so begins the slow romance of Annie and Drake. She is battling with her weight and trust demons. Drake is dealing with his. They truly are two ships that pass in the night, each growing closer to each other, but neither wanting to get their heart stomped on again.

The ending had all the drama that I was expecting, and a few that I wasn’t.

And the final chapter, get those hankies out, your gonna need it. The emotions were all spot on, and I blubbed like a big girl at all the sad parts, (and there are a few).  The additional characters in this book, only added to this story. And it was great to read about the old characters from the previous book.

Life hadn’t stopped for RiverSong, it just added another chapter.  And RiverBend is great addition.  I see there is another book planned, I am totally ready for another story, and I plan to read both these books again and again.  If you like your romance slow, but with plenty of emotions, then please give these one a try.  Off to find some chocolate, all that emotion was just too much 😉 lol x

Review:

It’s a SCORCHER and I’m not talking about the weather outside!!  I am fanning myself off after reading PLAYING THE PART by Robin Covington.  It’s her newest novel that is going to be a great summer read! It’s a great plot with wonderful characters.  Piper James is a romance novelist who has been hired as a consultant to a movie set.  Her book is being made into a movie and the hot Hollywood star, has no idea how to play a man in love.  Mick Blackwell “was a man-sized death-by-chocolate layer cake, and she wanted to eat him up”.  I love some of the lines in the book!  It’s a classic story of man sees girl, man wants girl, girl wants guy but……. She has some rules!  Piper, the romance novelist that looks like a sexy librarian has been burned in the past.  She is interested in a sex only relationship with the handsome actor.  She just wants no sleepovers and no bad press.  Well, the chemistry between the two characters is hot, hot, and scorching!   Mick is a love them and leave them guy, but he keeps on wanting to change the rules. He is drawn to Piper and his relationship with Piper is making him a better actor too!  Hey, what’s going on Mick?  This is a great story dealing with building a relationship, trust, falling in love and great sex.  Can Piper teach Mick how to love?  How many rules is Piper willing to break to keep this man in her life?

If you want a great summer read, you will enjoy this novel.  Robin Covington has some great lines that will leave you laughing too!  I love the whole book, except for the epilogue.  That was a little too unbelievable, but I must admit, the romantic inside of me swooned!   Enjoy!
