ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 18, 2013

Maximilian Cale, the Duke of Lyons, accepted long ago that his kidnapped brother was dead. When a cryptic note from investigator Tristan Bonnaud claims otherwise, Max seeks out Tristan’s sister, Lisette—and is infuriated to learn that Tristan has also mysteriously vanished. Have the siblings perpetrated an elaborate hoax? Or is the fiercely protective beauty as innocent as she claims them to be?

Fearful that the powerful Duke will destroy Tristan’s career in his zeal for the truth, the clever Lisette convinces Max to accompany her to Paris in a joint search for their loved ones. But their journey takes a seductive twist when they pose as an ordinary husband and wife—not an English Duke with a tarnished family name and the illegitimate daughter of a viscount—and discover an exhilarating passion free from the damning secrets of the past. With the line between danger and desire enticingly blurred, they discover that some mysteries, like those of the heart, are answered tenfold in the bliss of a true and trusting love

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES is the first storyline in The Duke’s Men historical romance series by Sabrina Jeffries with the introduction of Maximilian Cale aka The Duke of Lyons and the woman who will steal more than his heart but his soul and the very air that he breathes-Lisette Bonnaud.

The storyline focuses on the Duke’s search for the man who claims to know the whereabouts of Max’s missing and presumably dead brother and how this search will bring Max up close and personal with Lisette. When it is discovered that Lisette’s brother Tristan is also missing, the couple will embark on a cross continent journey that will force Max and Lisette to pose as husband and wife to ensure her reputation stays intact.

There is much family background history revealed throughout the storyline including the introduction of Lisette’s brothers and extended family of Maximilian Cale. Lisette is more than conscience and aware of her lack of social standing within society and therefore entering into any sort of relationship with the Duke, she fears will tarnish his reputation. And the Duke’s family history, although most of it not public knowledge, has the man denying his feelings for the woman with whom he has fallen in love. A history of secrets, betrayal and lies will be revealed forcing Max to walk away from a future with Lisette. When spiteful and heartbreaking words are exchanged, Max knows he has damned himself to a life without the woman he loves.

The sexual tension within the storyline was hit and miss due to the continuous battle of words between the couple and, in particular the Duke’s (Max) occasional snippy attitude and highbrow manner. His constant need to use words in anger, against Lisette, made him a difficult character at times to embrace even though Lisette was more than willing to forgive the man every time. In many novels, the back and forth banter fuels the sexual pressure but there was something missing in this particular story. Max’s attraction to Lisette was cooled with thoughts of his own family secrets, and Lisette knew that her mother’s reputation would push away any thoughts of a future with the Duke as her own reputation by tarnished by association. Whenever the couple appeared to make headway in their relationship, painful memories and potential legal liabilities would interfere.

Most of the storyline focuses on the developing relationship between Max and Lisette and, the build-up to discovering the truth behind the Duke’s missing brother. The big reveal and identity of everyone concerned read like a who’s who in the family tree. There were so many different branches the family tree started to look like a forest-but for the trees.

What The Duke Desires is a fast-paced introductory storyline that reveals the tainted history behind two different families, yet very similar on many levels. Money does not make one immune to gossip and disease, and a life of struggle will soften a woman’s heart towards a man who has lived an entire life built on a lie.

REVIEW: This is the second book in the Cherry Tucker Investigative series. It’s a little town in Georgia drama, revolving around an annual event the Brunswick Stew Festival.

Cherry Tucker is a local artist involved in her town. She’s dating a deputy sheriff Luke Harper, but has an ex-husband (sort of) who she married while in Las Vegas for a few hours before having it annulled, Todd McIntosh. Although Todd is an ex, he’s still a good friend and holds no animosity – in fact he’s still very much attracted to Cherry. This makes for some interesting conflict.

During the festival her friend and fellow artist Eloise Parker who has eaten about six sample bowls of the stew is taken very ill. Upset and trying to make people realize that Eloise, who had Crohn’s disease, was much too suddenly ill and she doesn’t believe it was her Crohn’s. When they reached the hospital it seems about 50 or more other people were also very ill, one in a coma. When Cherry goes to find Eloise’s room, she finds Eloise’s family crying and they tell her Eloise didn’t make it. Eloise’s father asks Cherry to help find out what happened to her, as he also doesn’t believe that her Crohn’s caused her death. He wants to know exactly what killed his daughter and won’t believe the police will give it the attention she deserves.

Cherry’s boyfriend as well as her sheriff uncle don’t want her involved in the case while they are investigating, but Cherry has very much a mind of her own…making her a cross somewhere between Lucille Ball and Stephanie Plum. Investigating in her own way, she has mishaps and yet somehow discovers that someone added arsenic to something served at the festival.

Larissa Reinhart has written a very interesting tale of murder, betrayal, romantic entanglement…you name it, this story has it! Very intriguing and fast paced. There are a lot of wonderful characters who quickly become your friends, family and enemies. It’s a twisting story of dysfunctional people, relationships, greed and more. There’s more than a little humor with a good bit of danger mixed in, making it a really great read.

Hope it doesn’t take too long to get back to Cherry and her next adventure!

REVIEW: Move over Steel Magnolias and make room Stephanie Plum! Larissa Reinhart has written a great new mystery/murder series. It’s well plotted, action packed and the pace is stunning.

Cherry Tucker is the heroine. She’s just out of art school and trying to make a name for herself in the art world. She’s returned to Halo, her small Georgia hometown to live and try to earn a living. There are many great characters that feel like real folks you probably know or have met.

Like Stephanie Plum, she has a couple of “hot” guys interested in keeping company with her. Todd McIntosh, a drummer and seems to have a gambling problem…once talked her into marriage on a fun trip to Vegas. After just 3 hours and him disappearing to the gambling tables without a honeymoon, Cherry decided to have the mistake annulled (no harm, no foul). They remain good friends and Todd is still trying to regain lost ground. The other is a returned boyfriend, Luke Harper. He’s a high school sweetheart who often left her with a broken heart and the check at the Waffle House. Having grown up and gone through the military, he’s back in town for his step-brother’s funeral and the sparks are flying.

The story revolves around the funeral/murder of Dustin Branson, son of JB, the town big wig. Cherry’s gets a chance to paint a last portrait of Dustin for his somewhat flaky step-mom Wanda (Luke’s mother). I know, eewww! However, she needs the money and the experience.

This is a delightful story with humor, interesting situations and some real danger from some of the seedier characters. Cherry is one of those people who just can’t keep herself out of trouble though her intentions are the best.

It’s a fun read with lots of excitement, some hot kissing…sorry no farther. You’ll enjoy the great characters and the whole thing. I thoroughly loved this story and the next as well! Looking forward to the next Cherry Tucker mystery!

Photographer Kaira Sorenson’s life takes a nightmare turn when she’s attacked by blood-thirsty creatures—and saved by a vampire. Now she must decide if she’s willing to be his forever…

Excerpt

Taken by the Vampire King (Vampire Warrior Kings #3) by Laura Kaye

Henrik’s back slammed against a brick wall, the darkness of the narrow alley sheltering their trio from the tourists thronging Tromsø’s streets.

Lars stood at the entrance, making sure no one developed an unhealthy curiosity.

Jakob got right up in Henrik’s face, forearm pressing into the king’s chest. “What happened?”

He shook his head, swallowing thickly, his hunger burning so intensely it was almost a living thing within him. “Wanted her,” he rasped. It hadn’t been a decision. There wasn’t anything rational or conscious about it. From the first moment she’d approached him, he was awash in her appealing scent, like the smoky berries of a vintage wine or the rich bite of an aged, dignified whiskey.

“Wanted her how?”

“I wanted her.” He knocked his head against the brick. Even now, he couldn’t shake the image of the vein’s rhythmic dance along her slender neck or of the luscious dip of her cleavage, both displayed so invitingly by her upswept hair. His fangs throbbed with a want and a need he couldn’t remember feeling in ages. Not to mention the aching hard-on between his legs.

“Straight out no-shit bloodlust?” Something like hope sounded in the warrior’s deep voice.

“Ja.” Henrik heaved a deep breath of cold January air as his imagination unhelpfully replayed how it would’ve gone down. Tearing the gown from her trim body. Holding her curves in his hands. Bearing her up against the wall. Sinking his fangs and his cock in deep until every dark, needy part of him was sated.

“I’ll get her.” Jakob turned away.

The king slammed his hand down on his brother’s shoulder and gripped hard. “Nei.”

“You want her. You need her.”

“I’ll kill her.”

Because he wouldn’t be able to stop.

Once he got a taste, something base and instinctual told him he wouldn’t be able to make himself stop. He’d been so close to the edge of his restraint in the gallery. Only the sound of her voice had pulled him back from the brink.

All he’d wanted was a night out of their mountain citadel, away from the looming promise of death. He thought the jovial atmosphere of the festival would distract him from all that was to come. Instead, it had thrown it right in his face. Christ, he was a catastrophe waiting to happen, already more beast than man. He shook his head again. “I’ll fucking kill her,” he rasped.

“You won’t.”

Acid washed through his gut. “You willing to risk an innocent woman’s life—or her soul—to see which of us is right? I’m not.” He shuddered, the danger of becoming like his evil enemies one of his greatest fears. “Leave her be. I’ll not have it any other way.”

review
REVIEW: THE MASTER UNDONE is the fifth novella in Lisa Renee Jones Inside Out Novellas and told from the ‘Masters’ POV. This storyline is not a retelling of any particular part of the series thus far, but is a story about what happens next after ‘The Master’ discovers what has happened to his sub Rebecca.

It has been 24 hours since ‘The Master’ discovered that his current sub was responsible for the disappearance of Rebecca-a woman who wanted more from ‘The Master’ than he was willing or ready to give. But his anguish over Rebecca will have to be tempered when a more urgent matter-one that involves his mother-may bring the strong, alpha male to his knees. With his personal life in turmoil, ‘The Master’ will discover a feisty, independent female, a woman whom his mother respects and trusts, in the guise of one Crystal Smith.

Crystal is a woman who is definitely not a submissive. She is an alpha female, with a take charge attitude and knows when to move on. She recognizes that ‘The Master’ is in a vulnerable position and she is more than willing to be his playmate for one night. But when ‘The Master’ awakens to an empty bed, he knows only one thing-he must find Crystal-now.

THE MASTER UNDONE is a short story where Lisa reveals a different side to ‘The Master’-a powerful man we have seen dominate and control-but a man who is just as susceptible to the foibles of the reality of life as any other human. He is man who realizes that he cannot save everyone, no matter what the cost to his heart or his wallet. Lisa pulls the reader into a different point of view but one that lays naked a man’s emotions, his deepest pain and the love of family. The Master Undone is a fascinating and eye opening welcome addition and change from the normal-a man’s POV in an erotic storyline

ABOUT THE BOOK: Released May 7, 2013

What if a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ could happen twice?

Suffering from a past full of tragedy, Dahlia London’s soul has been left completely shattered. Happily ever after is a far cry from reality in her world. But, when she is reconnected with her past, the bonds that form are irrefutable.

When River Wilde, lead singer of The Wilde Ones, comes back into Dahlia’s life, the intensity that fires their relationship combined with underlying feelings that have never died lead her to believe she has met her soulmate.

Struggling with confusion as old connections fade and new ones begin, Dahlia’s grief begins to lift–but guilt remains. River wants to be the one to mend all that is torn within her.

But with a past that is never really gone, can their future survive?

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CONNECTED is the first storyline in the contemporary romance duet series Connections by Kim Karr. Connected focuses on Dahlia London, a twenty something woman who has suffered terrible loss and heartache. When she is finally able to take those first tentative steps back into the real world she will come face to face with the man she felt a connection to several years before. He is her soulmate and the man to whom she will forever be connected.

River Wilde is NOT the epitome of the bad boy/rocker dude: he has eyes for only one woman and that woman disappeared from his life; she is his muse and the woman who stole his heart. Their first meeting was quick but emotionally powerful and one that neither River nor Dahlia has ever forgotten. River is the perfect mate-he is strong, protective, loving, romantic and for a musician, he is a one-woman man. Almost too good to be true, but in Connected, he is the ideal boyfriend, fiancé and friend.

The novel flash forwards in several spots to move the storyline along, which can be disconcerting for some readers but was required to show the passage of time. The attraction between River and Dahlia is instant and the sexual tension is strong. The relationship is loving; there is never any thoughts of betrayal or mistrust, but you know that in the end something will go wrong and the story epilogue ends on a cliffhanger that I for one suspected. There were a few hints throughout the story that led me to believe that the couple’s happily ever after was too good to be true, and the ending will bring the storyline full circle.

Kim Karr has written an emotional and engaging love story that at times will break your heart and put a smile on your face. Book 2 TORN is set for release in October 2013. Let’s hope she can bring happiness to everyone concerned because I for one do not like to see anyone walk away with a broken heart.

Maureen McGowan – Compliance Promo – Guest Post

Guest Post-Black and Blue

An Ode to YA by Maureen McGowan

If you talked to me five years ago, I’d have said, not only did I not read young adult fiction, I certainly had no plans to write it. I knew that publishers had started to acquire and publish more YA fiction, based on the success of Harry Potter, but I didn’t think that it was for me. I figured I’d have to tone down my voice, tame my storytelling style, reign in my ideas. No way did I want to write for “kids”.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The first (modern) YA novel I read was The Hunger Games and I was pretty much hooked after that. And I’m not the only adult who feels this way. Respected author, Nick Hornby (About a Boy, High Fidelity, etc.) said,

“I see now that dismissing YA books because you’re not a young adult is a little bit like refusing to watch thrillers on the grounds that you’re not a policeman or a dangerous criminal, and as a consequence, I’ve discovered a previously ignored room at the back of the bookstore that’s filled with masterpieces I’ve never heard of.”

And more recently, author and media guru, Chuck Wendig said in his blog article, 25 Things You Should Know About Young Adult Fiction,

“…some of the bravest, strangest, coolest stories right now are being told in the young adult space.”

And these two quotes encapsulate my own awakening. YA books are about teens, but they aren’t just for teen readers.

YA books are no longer juvenile. They’re no longer just for kids. And they sure aren’t like the books shelved in the teen section when I was a teen.

In fact, I realized my thinking about writing YA Fiction was backwards. Adult fiction was forcing me to reign in my voice and color inside genre lines. By writing YA fiction I could write whatever I wanted. I could blend genres. I could be sweet or passionate or brutal. I could be sweet and passionate and brutal within the same book!

I love how daring, challenging and well-written many YA titles are, but I think it’s the genre blending I love the most about today’s YA Fiction. My series, The Dust Chronicles, (Deviants, October, 2012, Compliance, June, 2013, Glory, June 2014) blends sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, paranormal, spy-thriller, adventure, romance and even a dash of horror. But ultimately the books are (I hope) exciting fast-paced reads that raise both heart rates and interesting questions, without being heavy-handed or pedantic.

If I’d tried to publish these books as adult fiction, editors would have told me that there wasn’t enough focus on the romance to shelve it there, there isn’t enough science for the sci-fi aisle, not enough fantasy for that aisle, and they’re not nearly gory enough to be horror. Editors would have told me that I couldn’t write about a heroine, who’s done the things my 16-year-old heroine has done…

But in YA, none of those things were a problem. At all.

And based on my reader reviews on Amazon, the majority of my readers so far are adults, and many of them male. (The reviews from the men, often start with, “I thought I was going to hate this, but…”) Yes, I would love to capture more of the teen girl reader market, because they are so passionate about books, but I’m thrilled that adults are reading and loving my work.

So, my message to you, gentle readers, is: If you haven’t yet read any YA Fiction, you should give it a try. You don’t know what you’re missing!

A variety of suggestions from my favorites: The Hunger Games, Blood Red Road, Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Fault in Our Stars, Code Name Verity, Angelfall and, oh, perhaps one of my books. 🙂

Compliance, that just came out, is the second book in a trilogy, but also works as a standalone title.
