Complete Me (Stark Trilogy #3) by J. Kenner-a review

COMPLETE ME (Stark Trilogy #3) by J. Kenner-a review

complete me July 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 30, 2013

This sexy, emotionally charged romance continues the story of Damien Stark, the powerful multimillionaire who’s never had to take “no” for an answer, and Nikki Fairchild, the Southern belle who only says “yes” on her own terms.

Our desire runs deep. But our secrets cut close. Beautiful, strong, and commanding, Damien Stark fills a void in me that no other man can touch. His fierce cravings push me beyond the brink of bliss—and unleash a wild passion that utterly consumes us both.

Yet beneath his need for dominance, he carries the wounds of a painful past. Haunted by a legacy of dark secrets and broken trust, he seeks release in our shared ecstasy, the heat between us burning stronger each day.

Our attraction is undeniable, our obsession inevitable. Yet not even Damien can run from his ghosts, or shield us from the dangers yet to come.

Complete Me is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences

Stark Trilogy

REVIEW: COMPLETE ME is the third storyline and final installment in J. Kenner’s erotic contemporary Stark Trilogy. There is no time lag between Claim Me (book 2) and this story, and therefore the stress and anxiety of Damien’s upcoming trial is still at the forefront of the reader’s mind.

Complete Me focuses on Damien’s trial and the people trying to bring down the billionaire. The reader experiences the heartbreaking revelations and painful past of a young boy who is forced into some unspeakable acts only to have to relive it over and over through memories, nightmares and the reality of courtroom drama and the press.

Nikki is the strong, independent woman who continues to stand by his side, knowing that man that she loves is bordering the edge of control on an emotional void. She is there to pull him back and help him deal with the demons that threaten to suck him in and take him down. Without Nikki, Damien is only a shell; he is a man without purpose and a heart without soul. But Damien’s need to defend and protect Nikki will force an unpleasant impasse when he refuses to open up and talk about the past.

The storyline is rife with physical intimacy, sexual heat and sensual talk. The sex is abundant and often, explicit and hot, and at times overwhelming to the story and plot. There was so much sex that I started to skip-read through these passages. Although this is written in the erotic/romance genre, after awhile the sex felt like ‘filler’-no pun intended.

There are moments of fear and concern, heartbreaking sorrow and loss. And there is the mistaken belief that to walk away, is the only solution when the world threatens to destroy the person that you love. The couple continues to struggle with their individual personality quirks and needs; Nikki’s need to be independent and Damien’s need to protect will forever be on the peripheral boundary of their love.

“I want to hold you close. To cherish and protect you. To draw you in until we are so close that I am lost without you. I want to take you to bed, to watch the way your skin tightens beneath my fingers, the way you body awakens under my touch….Everything I’ve built? All my companies? All my billions? They have no value compared to you.”

COMPLETE ME is a detailed and wonderful final chapter in the Stark Trilogy but there is still some room for short stories and novellas. The series ends with a HEA, but in my opinion it is another beginning for Nikki and Damien. J. Kenner has written a series that will make you smile and cry; you will feel the anxiety, the pain and the love; you will experience the fear of loss, the anguish of betrayal and the satisfaction of one man finding his heart and his soul in the woman who is willing to endure the suffering alongside the man that she loves.

Blurred

Review:

I was excited to write this review because the sooner it was posted, the faster word would spread about this terrific world created by Tara Fuller.    In Fuller’s first book of her Kissed by Death series, Inbetween, we learn from the title of the introductory novel, is a “holding pen” and a primary setting for our supernatural characters:

“You might think of it as a sort of purgatory.  A type of limbo for souls who don’t quite belong in Heaven or Hell yet.”

Blurred (the sequel) begins at a pivotal fire scene at the conclusion of Inbetween involving Cash and Anaya, the best friends of the original couple.  Cheesy?  After layers of the story are revealed, you will let out a resounding NO in response.

Anaya is a soul reaper.  A spirit herself (as a result of good intentions), she is charged with freeing souls from the recently departed destined for heaven.  When Cash’s life is about to end, instead of performing her customary act of reaping, Anaya receives a contradictory order from Balthazar, the keeper of the afterlife:

“Not this one, Anaya.  This one is special.  No matter what, you will ensure that he stays in his flesh.”

As a result of the interference, Cash is suddenly exposed to the spirit world and it’s far from beautiful.  Black, nefarious shadows stalk and surround Cash with a deadly purpose.  Unbeknownst to Cash, these “shadow demons” recognize a kindred spirit.

“You’re balancing on this tightrope between life and death, a side effect of putting you back in your body at the fire.  These shadows are attracted to the scent of death and the emotions that accompany it.  The closer you get to death, the more appealing you seem.”

Against her will (and more interesting wishes she TRIES to ignore), Anaya realizes her compliance in Balthazar’s plan is slowly killing Cash.

“I realized that I was giving something back to this boy, but it didn’t feel like it.  It felt like I was taking everything away.”

And in the exploration of those feelings (we did see Anaya surreptitiously sneak longing glances at Cash in the first book), Anaya can no longer deny a deep attraction.  Talk about spectacular revelations!

This was a lovely story about surrendering to love, but I must admit it didn’t grab me as much as Finn and Emma from Inbetween.  While a bit of a scandal makes up their story, there was an undeniable draw to each other that made rule-breaking acceptable…and I’m a mom!  😀  Cash and Anaya have a rather special connection, even more profound than the original couple’s, but it developed rather slowly and with a bit of an “ick” factor FOR ME:  Anaya’s a 1,000 year old spirit and Cash is a 17 year old boy.  I am leaving out the particulars of what makes their relationship unique because I am not a spoiler, but because they’re rather significant, maybe it’s just MY own quirk?  I did mention the revelation was spectacular, right?  You decide.

A tug of war back story keeps Cash’s life on the proverbial fence; where his desire to live or die begins to blur.  He’s living in an expired body and his options are running out:  Side with Balthazar (and Anaya) or join the underworld…embracing his role as a shadow walker?

I really don’t want this to be over!  Ms. Fuller impressed me with Inbetween and Blurred, but there’s just so much more to discover.  Not only do I believe Balthazar’s story is begging to be told, but Easton, a secondary character, fellow reaper, and total badass, is quietly stealing hearts in the background.  Ms. Fuller’s voice was a breath of fresh air in a climate of stale YA.  I loved how she was able to weave in Finn and Emma without having them take over the story.    Ms. Fuller writes about enduring love stories…love stories that last several lifetimes…*winks*  I recommend this to everyone, but do start at the beginning…to get the full effect. 😉

Gabriella (Alpha Marked #2) by Celia Kyle-a review

Gabriella (Alpha Marked #2) by Celia Kyle-a review

Gabriella

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 24, 2013

Thirty and single? Getcha ass to the Gathering!

Ugh. Gabriella Wickham thought turning thirty was bad enough, but now she’s been invited (ordered) to attend this year’s Gathering (werewolf speed dating). Having a Mark on her arm means that she’s one of the few human women destined to mate with not one, but two Alpha werewolves. Thank goodness werewolves don’t come in “ugly.” After her sister Scarlet mates the Ruling Alphas, things really start to get interesting. Gabby runs into not one, but two hotter than hot werewolves who make her tingle in all the right places. Yum. Of course, “yum” comes with baggage of both the mental and female kind. Lovely. Luckily it’s nothing a few punches and a good talking to can’t cure. Maybe…-ish.

Berke Davis and Jack Wright know that lush, curvaceous Gabriella is their mate. Who cares that they’re currently not part of an Alpha pair? Details, details. Burke has been half bound to his best friend Jack since they were four, but the past keeps them from solidifying their pairing and taking up the mantle of Alpha. Berke understands his friend’s feelings, but Jack is about to get a lesson on living and loving. Berke just hopes the lessons are learned before they both lose Gabriella. Especially when she is Challenged by a rival to first blood…a Challenge that could end in very permanent, and deadly, consequences…for Gabriella.

•••••••••••••••••••••

GABRIELLA is the second storyline in Celia Kyle’s erotic paranormal BBW Alpha Marked romance series focusing on Scarlet, Gabriella and Whitney Wickham-fraternal triplets and potential mates to shape-shifting ruling Alpha pairs. A bit of a warning, this series contains M/M/F sexual situations.

The premise of the novella length storylines is the festival of The Gathering- a speed dating (of sorts) where marked human females (who have not been claimed by their thirtieth birthday) are commanded to present themselves as potential mates for Alpha pairs. As luck would have it, the Wickham triplets had not been claimed and it was their turn to appear before the Alpha pairs for the official ‘sniff test’ of compatibility. Two Alpha males rule as one-claim and mate one female together. This is Gabriella’s story and one with a bit of a twist.

Captain of the Guard Berke Davis knew that Gabriella was his mate. Along with his second in command and life long best friend Jack Wright, both males knew they were Alpha material but Jack’s belief that his blood line was tainted prevented either male from seeking the coveted position within the pack or any pack, for that matter. But The Gathering would force Jack’s hand as well as Gabby’s potential as a worthy mate for two wanna-be Alphas whose only sin was being born into the wrong pack.

Gabriella-Alpha Marked is a fast paced, short storyline whose events start immediately following the end of Scarlet. The attraction between the trio is immediate as the ‘wolves’ know that the female is their mate. The sex is hot and limited to only one chapter. The sexual language and descriptions are not as graphically explicit as the first storyline but there is still quite a bit of heat and steam due to the nature of the M/M/F relationship. And because the storylines are novellas, the world building and character development are limited to what may or may not occur in the span of a few chapters and a couple of hours in virtual time.

Description:
So, Megan O’Malley gave in to drunken temptation and pinched a cute guy’s ass at her cousin’s wedding. Who’d have thought a perfectly normal guy—okay, a bit short—was a leprechaun or that he’d have such a bad attitude about giving away his money?! Now that she’s captured him, Megan may be five million dollars richer, but she’s also got an angry leprechaun camped out on her sofa, doing his best to prevent her from becoming the business mogul of her dreams!

Fergus O’Reilly cannot figure out what he’s done to upset the Queen of the Fairies. He was working hard to rebuild his family’s honor when he took one small break to help friends play a wedding. Then some drunken lady pinched his ass, the Queen declared him caught, and now he’s broke, homeless, and hustling to stop the lovely lady with the wandering fingers from spending his money! This would be so much easier if she wasn’t cute and caring and determined to help with his so-called money addiction!

Review:

In Feeling Lucky by Kathy Bryson, we meet the heroine early. Megan is drunk at her cousins wedding, when she spies a cute guy in the band looking at her, a little eye contact, and Megan boosted by drink and her friends urging her on, Megan pinches his butt. But then all hell breaks loose, lets just say that the bouquet wasn’t the only thing thrown !!

Megan wakes the following morning with a hangover and a blurry memory. She goes to work, and from here it gets interesting. She finds out that’s she won the local lottery 🙂 and this is where it goes a little round the houses ! Yes she had won, but she loses her job in the process ! And too add more misery onto Megan’s plate, her friends turn on her !!

So finding herself jobless, she goes to find her mother, finding her in the local diner, Megan tries to tell her mother about the winning. But there is a meeting going on, so Megan pulls up a chair and finds out what’s going on.

To shorten the story, because it does get a little technical. Fergus has been caught by Megan, they are bound together, so unless he can get Megan to release him from their bonds, he won’t see a penny of his fortune again !

To say Megan is mortified, horrified and downright pi$$ed, is an understatement. She thought they had a little sparkle at the wedding, but there was no way her and Fergus were stuck with each other, the money was hers, and she will spend it how she likes.

Megan meets the queen of the Fae !! A little tense, but now Megan nows what to expect, she has decided to help Fergus with his addiction (because that is how she sees Fergus’s problem,) he is addicted to earning and keeping his fortune. (there is a reason why he hoards his money.)

But the money is hers, so she decides to help the community. She wants to set up a fund for people to approach her with ideas for business for the community. And this is where it starts to wander, and i get a little bored.  I love detail, don’t get me wrong, but i think i got an overload of facts, figures and enough details to start my own trust fund.

Fergus now decides it’s time to step up his game. He starts with being obnoxious, and when that doesn’t work, he begins his routine of bored and aggravating male. He eats his way through all of Megan’s cupboards.  He leaves his dirty socks EVERYWHERE !! and hogs the remote, he also makes himself an unwanted guest, and tells Megan she has to put up with it, or all she has to do is say leave, and it will all be over.

This part is funny, and i did chuckle at his naughty antics. But when he began to seduce her, and callously stop as he seduced her, I could have happily throttled him, he was so mean !!!

So the story motors along at quite a nice pace, the storyline of Megan setting up the fund, and various characters applying for it. And there is also the underlying story of Fergus and his family, he cousins who hope that Megan will help Fergus, as well as help them to grasp their own happiness and fortunes. The story of the antagonism between the Queen and Fergus is also explained. There are a few surprises that I didn’t see, and a few I could see coming a mile off 🙂

The characters did take their time to get to know it each other.  And for anyone that read Midsummers Nights Dream, by William Shakespere, the characters come alive in a whole new way in this book.

I really did like the book, and I loved the world that the author created in her book. I could see a series here, and I would read more. I hope that Fergus and Megan have their own wedding, and her friends all get drunk and fight over the bouquet, THAT I would like to read. 🙂  So, now we come to the end of our story, do they get a happy ending ? Yes they do, but they also learn a lot about each other, themselves, and everyone around them.

Description:
In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called ?brilliants,  and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in and betray his own kind. From Marcus Sakey, a modern master of suspense (Chicago Sun-Times), and one of our best storytellers (Michael Connelly), comes an adventure that’s at once breakneck thriller and shrewd social commentary; a gripping tale of a world fundamentally different and yet horrifyingly similar to our own, where being born gifted can be a terrible curse.

Review:

Brilliance by Marcus Sakey is a futuristic suspense thriller.  When I was asked to read this book, I had never heard of Marcus Sakey.  I thought ok, I will give this a try, even though the book is 452 pages.  From the start, the book started off good, but I thought can it hold my attention. Then as I kept turning the pages, I discovered I had already read over 100 pages, and I was not about to stop Brilliance turned out to be a fantastic thriller, and I am so thankful to have been given a chance to discover Marcus Sakey, whose writing grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go.

Brilliance explains at the beginning that in the 1980’s, approximately 1% of the population were born with special ability gifts; and they were designated as “abnorms”, or brilliants.  They had no super powers, but each would have different types of ability making them smarter then the normals.  Years later, one person abused the gift for their own advantage, by making billions on the stock market, causing the stock market to close in 2011. To prevent abnorms from causing further issues, the children born to abnorms were monitored, and if they were considered first tier, the children were taken away from their family and trained to work for the government, and the families would never see them again.

We meet our hero, Nick Cooper, who works for a secret government agency. Nick is an abnorm, who was born before the testing and training began.  He works for this special division of the government, which concentrates solely on the abnorms.  Nick is the top guy for the leader of this division (DAR-Department of Analysis and Response), and he is very patriotic.  Nick’s ability is to see patterns in front of him that gives him clues to what will happen, giving him the knowledge of knowing their movement or plans and being a step ahead. His job is to help stop & eliminate abnorm terrorists, who are a threat to the country.

One such person is John Smith, an abnorm activist, who is now considered a terrorist.  Smith has killed innocents for his cause, in freeing abnorms to be able to live a normal life.  Hence a civil war has begun, and Nick is charged with finding and killing John Smith.

When Smith blows up a building, causing many deaths, Nick takes it upon himself to become rogue, and try to get onto Smith’s team.  A big part of Nick’s decision making is his 4 year old daughter is an abnorm, and she will be a 1st tier.  Nick makes a deal with the DAR leader to go undercover, even if it causes his own life, if they ensure his daughter does not have to do that testing ever.

Without going into too much detail, and no spoilers, Nick’s life is on the run, from fellow agents who think he is rogue, and Smith’s team who do not truly trust him.  Along the way he meets Shannon, an abnorm, who can move with such speed, that he calls her ‘the girl who walks through walls’.  Shannon was a kick ass heroine, and she though at first the enemy, she needs to work with Nick to help each other.

There was a lot of excitement and suspense throughout the book.  The last ½ of the book was so exciting; I could not put it down.  Sakey has so many twists and surprises; you are thrown for a loop a few times.  Especially, with some cool tech things in this futuristic world.  The key to the final half is that Nick must make decisions, as he discovers that everyone is lying to him, and the truth is not what it seems.  As it heads to its exciting and emotional climax, you are continually on the edge of your seat.

Sakey has not only created a complex world, with a fascinating plot; but he has also created some wonderful and interesting characters.  I am so glad I read this book, as it is most definitely one of the top thrillers this year.  This is the first book in what is expected to be a trilogy.  Brilliance is now also being made into a movie, and after reading this thriller, I can see how it would be a marvelous movie.
