Cynthia Eden’s-FIRST TASTE OF DARKNESS

Blake grabbed her and shoved her to the side. Her feet twisted in the heels, and Jess hit the floor. In that same instant, Blake yanked out a gun. The man had been armed? When he’d been making out with her, he’d had a weapon? She sure hadn’t noticed it.

Blake returned fire. Forget firing back, they needed to get out of there!

On her hands and knees, Jess scuttled toward the control panel. She shoved chunks of glass out of her way.

Bam! Bam!

Her knees and hands weren’t the only things trembling then. Her whole body shook. But she just needed to go forward a few more inches… She lifted her fist and drove it into the control panel. Yes! She’d hit the button for the first floor. The doors slowly began to close.

Bam! Bam!

Blake was still firing. She heard footsteps racing toward them. If their attacker got close enough, if he was able to stop those doors from closing— Blake fired once more.

She heard a grunt. Her heart stopped. Did that sound mean that Blake had taken out whoever had been shooting at them? The doors slid closed, and Jess sucked in a deep breath.

Can she find the strength to move on from the past, reconcile her feelings for Luc, find a way to stop a divine war with fallen angels, and still pass the eleventh grade?

••••••••••••••••••••••••

Speak of the Devil is the debut novel of author Shawna Romkey. The story line begins as Missouri teen Lily Tyler faces a tragic car accident that leaves her dead and miraculously brought back to life and left to deal with the heart breaking loss of her best friend Julie and almost boyfriend Mike. And the never-ending question of – why her? Grief stricken and unsure of how to continue to live in her small town where everything seems to remind her of the loss she has sustained and the ghosts of memories that continue to haunt her – Lily decides to deal with her depression by moving to the big city with her father and step-mother. There, trying to live a normal life and keeping people at arms length, Lily begins school, gets a job with the school newspaper an begins working on assignments. Through one such assignment her life will take a new road. All this will test her trust and thrust her smack dab in the middle of a battle between good and evil!

Finding friends among a high school theater group we are introduced to Mo, a nerdy red haired musical theater member who has a wonderful sense of humor and eager to be friends or more than friends with Lily. But Lily finds herself attracted to Luc, the green eyed, flak jacket wearing, mystery theater member who leaves her enthralled from the first moment! Lily feels very comfortable and at home with these new friends, but soon realizes that running away from her past may not end the sorrow she fought so hard to put an end to!

Thus setting off the enchanting tale of good versus evil! I connected with the teen angst that the author brought forth when one deals with death at that young age. The struggle to find yourself again and your place in the world after a devastation and loss. I was brought to tears by Lily on several occasions as her struggles hit home on many levels. Not only is this an epic story of good versus evil the romantic twists and turns leaves you wanting more! The paranormal element is just one of many that grabs hold and won’t let go! Refreshing and different! The cliffhanger ending lets you, of course wanting more and craving the second book! As on older reader this will definitely be a book that I will save and pass on to my young daughter to read one day!

I write YA. Young adult. The age limits vary but we’re talking 12 – 18 as in the YA category, but women up to the age of 45 read it, too. There is some talk in this genre about whether to write sex into YA, and there is much debate on this topic. I say, definitely not.
Some want to make it edgy or daring. And to be honest in my first draft of Speak of the Devil, I had swear words that started with every letter of the alphabet. I wanted to write Twilight with some sizzle, but the more I thought about it, the more I edited out my profanities. Why? Young adult is for young adults. It’s not as though they can’t go into any store that sells books and pick up Fifty Shades of Gray, uncensored, no identification required and read graphic sex if they wanted to. They can. If that’s what they want, they can get it without their parents’ permission and without question. Or they can go on the Internet and find all the sex images, words and videos they want.

Young Adults

I keep it out because I think young adult girls are already bombarded with sex as it is. Music videos, magazine ads, TV shows… it’s difficult to watch a situation comedy that isn’t talking about sex repeatedly. I love the Big Bang Theory, but at its premise it is a story about whether geeks can get laid. Love is only sometimes part of that equation. Is sex really the end-all be-all of life? I don’t think so, but I think our young adults get the message that it is.

Maybe I’m a prude, but when I watch The Vampire Diaries, I’m thinking, these girls are in high school and they’re drinking wine right out of the bottle at their slumber party? They’ve had sex repeatedly with multiple partners. They’ve grown up too fast, and while some of them have had to after their parents died, but is it a situation to be glorified? Shouldn’t it be one to be mourned?

Boy ReadingSure, I swore in high school. I had sex in high school. I drank in high school, but not on a constant, regular basis. Did I want to do all of those things if it got right down to it? Not really. Did I feel like I had to because that’s all anyone talked about? Pretty much. And back in the 80’s when I was in high school, the sexual pollution in the media was significantly lower than it is today. That was before the Interwebs. That was before media regulation was thrown out.

So I think maybe, just maybe, teens need a break from all of the bumping and grinding and drinking and drugging. Maybe they need a safe place where they don’t have to worry about sexual relationships and growing up too fast. Maybe, just maybe, they need a place to escape where they can just be who they want to be and not who everyone tells them they should be. They need a Hogwarts. They need a Forks. Adding in sex and swearing to be edgy and bold, isn’t edgy and bold at all. Everyone is doing it now. Just turn on the TV and watch a YA show. Save the edgy and daring for the NA genre and for the adult genre.

Give the YA a place to be YA.

An Interview with Christine O’Neil

An Interview with Christine O’Neil

Christine Bell
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Christine O’Neil as our guest today.

Chrstine is here today to discuss her new YA book, Chaos, which will be released tomorrow.  Christine also writes as Christine Bell, whom we have had the pleasure of doing reviews on her wonderful romance books.

But today Christine will talk about her first foray into writing her new YA series, as Christine O’Neil. Let’s meet Christine.

TRC: Hi Christine and welcome to The Reading Café.  We would like to start with some background information.

Christine: Hello, and thanks for having me!

TRC: Please tell us something about yourself.

Christine: Let’s see, I live in Pennsylvania with my husband, kids and two dogs, and I write full time which is excellent, because it means I get to wear yoga pants to work and eat handfuls of goldfish crackers for lunch and no one can judge me. I am a total geek and love to read fantasy and science fiction novels, especially YA. I love playing poker and going to the movies, and I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones, Firefly, Doctor Who (Team Tennant!), Supernatural and Sherlock. My favorite villain of all time is Severus Snape. My favorite hero of all time is also Severus Snape.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Christine: I’ve always been interested in reading, and, while I did write some before college, it was something I thought everyone had the ability to do and wasn’t something I ever thought of as a career. It wasn’t until my second time around in college as an adult that I fell in love with it and was encouraged by my professors to do more.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Christine: Keeping up with the ideas. I have a thousand half-baked stories teaming in my brain like wriggly little worms and part of my job is picking out the fattest worm and ignoring all the rest until I get one story on the page. Luckily, I write fast, but it’s always a challenge to focus in and get the job done without allowing myself to be distracted.

TRC: What was your first book published?  Can you tell us your reaction to seeing your first book published?

Christine: My first book was actually a steampunk novella called The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale. I’ve written over twenty novellas and novels since, and that book is still one of my favorites. Seeing your name on the cover of a book is so surreal. Like a dream come true. Totally exhilarating and I will never forget it. It was when I knew I’d found what I was always meant to do.

ChaosTRC: Can you please tell us the premise of your new YA novel, Chaos.  Is Chaos a standalone book, or a series.  If a series, how many books do you anticipate.

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Christine: Well, Chaos is book one of the Kardia Chronicles series, which is anticipated to be three-books. It’s about a girl names Maggie Raynard who has found out that she’s a semi-god (so like a demigod, only more diluted because it’s generations away rather than the child of a god directly) descended from the goddess Aphrodite. She’s having a rough time of it, because her new powers have caused her to do some very bad things. Her mom has written off the semi life all together and won’t help and there’s this new guy at school, Mac Finnegan, who keeps messing with her and she doesn’t know why.
Here’s the blurb:

My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I’m a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I’m stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying–and super hot—guy all up in my business, I’m about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there’s this watchdog council of semis who keep an eye out for any bad apples. They think I’m the baddest one in the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he’s got secrets of his own…and they may just kill us both.

TRC: Chaos is your first Young Adult novel.  Can you please tell us how you decided to go from writing mostly Romance, to writing YA?

Christine: It was always part of the plan. The first idea I had for a book was a YA novella, but I shelved it when I realized that I would need an agent to sell YA (at that time, at least. My current publisher, Entangled, accepts unagented YA submissions, but a few years back, pretty much the only houses accepting direct submissions were adult romance publishers). I was in my mid-thirties, and felt that it was better for me to skip the agenting process due to the time involved in landing an agent, and try my hand at smaller, digital publishing houses so I could get things moving as quickly as possible. I had always loved reading adult romance, so it was certainly no hardship. My five year plan was to write adult romance and then, once I’d established myself, I would take the time out to write a YA novel. Life has a way of throwing you curveballs when you least expect it and, three and a half years later, this amazing opportunity came my way to collaborate on this series with my Entangled publisher, Liz Pelletier, I grabbed it with both hands (and feet…and prehensile tail). One thing that made the transition easier for me was the fact that, at the heart of it, Chaos is a love story as well. It just also has fantastical world-building and the extra snark that I always enjoy reading in a YA book and don’t get to do as much of in Contemporary Adult Romance.

TRC: You write Contemporary, Erotic Romance, and now YA.  Do you have a preference?

Christine: I think it depends on the day. Sometimes it depends on the season or what’s happening in my life. I just love writing. I will say that I’ve never felt so at home and comfy in my writing shoes as I did with this book. I have been an avid reader of YA my whole life from the time I was a kid to when I worked at a middle school library a few years back, and I’ve never stopped loving it. There’s a magic to it that appeals to me so much and I feel like a kid myself when I’m writing it. I’m thrilled to be stepping into this new chapter in my career and hope people like reading it even half as much as I’ve loved writing it.

TRC: Can you please tell us what you are currently working on, as well as what you have upcoming in 2013?

Christine: I’m working on book two of the Kardia Chronicles which is slated for later this year, as well as edits for my next Entangled Brazen book. The rest of 2013 is really popping for me with a September release called Dirty Trick, a holiday novella that I co-wrote with author Riley Murphy called Full of Possibilities and then another novella from my Dare Me series called Down the Aisle.

TRC: Being a prolific writer, how do you come up with the ideas for your books?   Does it come to you in a dream, watching a television show or movie, or from real life?

Christine: Mostly real life. If you hang around me, you might as well know it off that bat, SOME part of you is going to end up in my book. I can’t help myself. I love people watching. We’re SOOOO weird and all the weird things we do that are so specific to one person really catch my interest because it’s exactly those things that make for a relatable character rather than cardboard cutouts that feel generic in a book.

For example, one of the secondary characters in Chaos is a sixteen year old named Libby. She’s a classic American beauty and everyone thinks by looking at her that she’s a cheerleader, but she’s actually a drama geek who looks at clothing as an opportunity to play a role for the day. She’s always pairing weird outfits together that are all just a little off for the occasion. She’ll have her hair up in chopsticks and wear a fluttery skirt with ballet flats to school, or a steampunk outfit to prom. Part of that idea came from my future daughter in law, who’s question before every event is “Can I wear THIS?” as she holds up what looks like a dress for a pageant or something from the Victorian era. She loves to dress up so I sorta filched that part of her personality and adapted it to fit my character.  I do it CONSTANTLY.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you have a specific time or place you like to write?

Christine: *snort* The word process is so funny for what I “have”. Mainly, I sit in a room on a recliner with a laptop on my thighs for ten hours a day (except for when I shift it to the side for a while after it gets too hot). To start off my day, I surf the web for all the important things, like “What ever happened to Vanilla Ice?” and then I go on Twitter and see what my tweeps are up to. Usually, there’s talk of food, shooz, and writing (my favorite things), so I stick in for a while and get the scoop. Then I feel guilty for frittering (isn’t that a good word? Frittering. It makes me want to sprinkle powdered sugar on it and eat it) away the first hour of the day, so I guilt myself into writing some words. This is where it gets good. It’s like I get caught up in a weird sort of haze of furious typing and find myself hungry three hours later with no recollection of where I’ve been or any concept of time and voila! Words on the page. I hop up feeling good about myself, clomp into the kitchen, paw through the fridge like a mad bear looking for any food that doesn’t require fire, peeling, chopping or opening, and I shove fistfuls of it into my gaping maw. After that, I pour some coffee and go back to more writing. Then, at about a quarter to four, I jump up in horror when I realize my husband will be home soon, and I quick make dinner, check my shirt for any egregious stains, brush my teeth and sometimes even my hair and pretend that I looked that good all day. Lather, rinse repeat. WARNING: If you become an author someday too, do NOT expect your life to be this glamorous. Not everyone can be as fancy as me and I don’t want you disappointed.

TRC: Do you have a favorite female and male character from your books, if so why?

Christine: ACK! This is like Sophie’s Choice. Um, let’s see. Okay, so for my adult novels, it’s a toss up between Lindy Knight from Wife for Hire and Stormy Gale from the Stormy Gale series. Lindy  was so hilarious and sweet. I loved her like she was a real person, but Stormy is my idol. She’s everything I want to be.  A cool, witty, funny, smart, sexy, tough as nails, fiercely loyal steampunk time pirate. I’ll pick Stormy. For guys, I’m going to have to go with Galen Thomas in Down for the Count. Sexy boxer, loves his woman, smart and funny. Love me some Galen.

For YA, it’s all about my protagonist in Chaos, Maggie Raynard. She’s excellent and if she were real, we would have been besties in high school. She’s dry and sarcastic and funny, but also flawed and confused and afraid because she’s got some serious stuff going on in her life and she is having trouble figuring out how to handle it. She’s juicy and deep and I felt very close to her when I was writing, to the point that there were times where I could almost hear her snort like, “Dude, I would NEVER say that. Delete.”

TRC: Many author bounce ideas and information between each other and their family and spouses.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Christine: Anybody who will listen! No, but seriously, I talk to my husband a LOT, my kids all the time too, especially about world building elements. We have a big family, there are 7 of us in the house, and we are all pretty much geeks (see attached photos for evidence of our celebratory cakes and our CominCon costumes) so I have the benefit of a huge base of fantasy, paranormal and science fiction knowledge at my fingertips. They are so awesome in helping me brainstorm and problem solve. Especially with trickier elements like time travel or the way magic powers work etc. We are also a family of readers, so if I tell my kids an idea, a lot of times they can be like, “Wait, I think I read something similar in XYZ series,” which is priceless to me. I want to be as original as I can and that’s not always easy due to the sheer volume of books out there and the fact that, in fantasy and paranormal, oftentimes we’re all drawing from the same lore, myth, pool of knowledge. I think the key is taking something that everyone is familiar with and then trying to turn it on its ear a little. I can’t re-write mythology, but I can twist it mercilessly until it feels somewhat fresh and new again.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Christine: I’m terrible at adding. Don’t make me do math. That’s why I do words.

TRC:  LOL

Review:

Chaos by Christine O’Neil is the first book in her new YA Kardia Chronicles series. Our heroine in this story is Maggie Raynard, who is 16 and has recently discovered that much of her life has been built on a lie.  A boy lies in a coma, because one night she became angry and lost control of herself, using powers she never knew she had.  Her mother and grandmother have kept this secret for years, as she awaits her next birthday, where her powers will become full force.  She must learn to control those powers, as Maggie is a semi god.  Will she be able to control them?  If she does not, how many more people will she hurt?

When we meet Maggie, she is writing a secret column for students…an advice column, using the surname, SHE.   No one other then her friends, knows that Maggie is She. This was her way of escaping from the reality of her future.  Her best friend, Libby, knows the truth, and help keep Maggie sane.  Her other friend from childhood, is the school’s star quarterback, Bink.  It is Libby and Bink, who are always there for Maggie, and the three of them are great friends.

One day, after one of her advices posts, she finds a note in her locker.  It is from someone who is mocking her advice, and starting his own rebuttal advice, calling himself HE.  Maggie knows it’s the hot looking new student, named Mac Finnegan.  Eventually, Mac will reveal to Maggie who he truly is, and her life is about to change.  Mac is another semi god, or perhaps someone stronger.  He was sent to investigate her by the council of semi gods, as a uncontrolled semi god is a danger to everyone.  Mac at first is cold, letting Maggie know she is destined for failure.  In time, he sees another part of Maggie that changes his tune, but he knows the result will be the same.  So he takes it upon himself to try to help train Maggie to learn to control her dangerous and powerful ability, which could cost her life.  What ensues is an exciting, and at times fun story of two people not meant for each other, yet who have become strongly attracted to one another.  Maggie lets it be known that she is falling hard for Mac, but he backs off, and refuses to acknowledge his attraction.

Mac knows there are others watching Maggie, and time is of essence.  But her temper, which is also uncontrollable, and some of her past which changes things, causes her to make a bad mistake, pushing Mac away, and putting her own life in danger.

As I said, this book has an interesting concept, exciting story, lots of action later in the book, and a lot of humorous moments.  Christine O’Neil has created a wonderful savvy heroine in Maggie, who is very opinionated, and thinks nothing of telling it like it is…at least her version.  What happens to Maggie?  Will Maggie and Mac become a couple despite the odds?  Who is the betrayer and why?  Who is the Council that will decide Maggie’s fate?  You will need to read this book to find the answers.   I enjoyed Chaos, and can’t for the next book.

Not to mention his single-minded determination. To put it simply: what Cillian wants, Cillian always gets. If their relationship was just about sex and rock n’ roll, it would be easy for them to get lost in their desires. Only their relationship is anything but a hook-up. Will lies, deceit and hidden tragedy get in the way, making the path to true love uncertain? Or will the girl whose been knocked Off Course, find her footing with the man who is teaching her it’s okay to lose control?

REVIEW: OFF COURSE is the fourth installment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, new adult Off Series featuring the lives and loves of the Caldwell clan. Off Course is a slight departure from the previous three storylines in that it takes place in Ireland. This is Renner and Cillian’s (pronounced Killian) story.

The storyline begins five years previous when a then seventeen year old Renner Caldwell meets the nineteen year old lead singer for the Irish rock band Over The Edge- Cillian O’Bradaigh-while on summer vacation. For all intents and purposes, the couple have an immediate attraction to one another but when Cillian realizes Renner is an inexperienced young girl, he walks away but never forgets their brief passionate kiss. Fast forward five years and Renner Caldwell returns to Ireland, disgraced and brokenhearted, and finds herself working in the very Irish pub where she first met the man whole stole her heart years earlier.

Renner and Cillian’s relationship is a story of second chances (to some degree). Following their brief first encounter where Cillian appears to reject Renner, the young woman returns home believing herself not worthy. But when her personal and professional life take an abrupt turn and Renner finds herself without employment, returning to Ireland seems like her only option. And running into Cillian is not high on her list of priorities especially when it looks like he does not remember Renner.

Cillian has never forgotten Renner Caldwell and his attempts to win her over fail at every opportunity especially when the ghosts from his past continue to control his present life. Hoping to alleviate a guilt that has been burning for years, Cillian does not realize that he is pushing Renner further away every time he jumps when some one else calls. Cillian believes it is his responsibility to save the world. But heartbreak and betrayal once again follow Renner and returning to America is now her only option.

Linc and Nix (Renner’s cousins) make a cameo appearance when Renner returns to the USA which gives the storyline a connection to the first three installments. The storyline also focuses on alcoholism and rehab and the lengths an alcoholic will go through to avoid acceptance and help. This is also a story of manipulation, enabling, and one man’s inherent guilt over death and destruction of his family. Sawyer Bennett addresses a different issue in each of her storylines and Off Course is no exception.

Off Course is a fast paced, heartbreaking and eye opening storyline that addresses several issues of current headlines including addiction and rehab: lies and manipulation; and work place affairs. Sawyer Bennett has noted that her next book in the series Off Chance will be her final installment and I have enjoyed the series and storylines. She has also stated that Renner and Cillian’s future will be addressed as Off Chance is Renner’s brother’s (Flynn) story.

Though ruined and cast out from society, she has worked hard to shelter her illegitimate son, Jack. Having sworn off men in her quiet but dignified life, Isabelle is unprepared for the deep longing that rips through her when a handsome stranger rescues her rambunctious six-year-old from the pounding ocean surf.

George Upperton is a man in trouble with debts, women, and a meddling family. He is, by all accounts, the last gentleman on earth Isabelle should be drawn to. But loneliness is a hard mistress, and caution gives way to desire . . . even though Isabelle is convinced that happiness can’t be found in the arms of such a devilish rogue. Only when Jack is kidnapped does Isabelle discover the true depth of George’s devotion—and how far a good man will go to fight for the woman whose love is all that matters.

REVIEW

3 out of 5 for this reader folks

A Most Devilish Rogue by Ashlyn Macnamara is the first book I have ever read by this author. I have to say while it was a good read, it failed to draw me and captivate my at times. That being said, Ashlyn Macnamara is very good at writing descriptive details that paints vivid pictures in your mind as you enjoy her words.

We are introduced right away to our main man George Upperton, notorious rake, gambler and overall charmer extraordinaire. He has just discovered that his mistress is “with child”! Seeing as he lives a certain lifestyle, he has no idea how he is going to get himself out of this sticky situation. He is in debt, is treated like an older child by his overbearing mother who wants to marry him off already, and just generally doesn’t care to conform to his “polite society”

While visiting an old friend with his family, George comes across Isabelle Mears and her son playing at the beach. All of a sudden the son Jack is swept up in the waves and George plunges into freezing water to save him. After an uncomfortable “thank you” by Isabelle, he is somewhat confused by this woman as her dress and her appeared station in life doesn’t seem to match her flowery comportment and speech.

Isabelle you see was shunned and disowned by her family for her one night of discretion with a young man that resulted in Jack conception. Isabelle is from high standing and money but living like a pauper, the towns scandalous lady whom everyone pretends doesn’t exist (they are so mean to her at times I felt myself getting angry for her) and considered “The Scarlett Letter”.

Once again, Isabelle finds herself in peril when Jack is kidnapped (along with the only lady that has given her the time of day and took her in when no one would) and she turns to George for help. George recruits many of his gentleman friends to search for Jack. Through all of this, the attraction that George and Isabelle feel towards one another is hard to fight and they eventually give in to it be damned the consequence.

Through many trials and tribulations, these two ride a roller coaster of forming friendship, lust, understanding, secrets, betrayal and a town that is full of people who want to keep these two apart.

Okay … so I really wanted to fall in love with these two but there were times that I felt a little disengaged and I think it may be due to the over abundance of description in this book. I wanted to get to the meat and potatoes and I thought at times there was just way too much details and angst that was repeated over and over again. I did love the way that George fought his friends and family to be at Isabelle’s side and how he stuck up for her when others wouldn’t. He had no reason to do this other than pure respect and love. You also see Isabelle just reaching the point of enough is enough and she begins to get stronger and stronger despite the way she is treated. She rises above all the mess and still offers the town her kindness.

Again … so much more to this story, but I don’t do spoilers in my reviews … WINK! LOL

I do believe there was another book before this one, but it wasn’t listed as a series. I went back and read the synopsis of the first book and I believe that many characters from there return in this book! Overall, a good read, but not a book I will reread!

HAPPY READING!

ABOUT THE BOOK:  Release Date August 6, 2013

Best friends don’t lie.
Best friends don’t ditch you for a guy.
Best friends don’t post your deepest, darkest secrets online.

Bailey’s falling head-over-high-heels for Ryder West, a mysterious gamer she met online. A guy she’s never met in person. Her best friend, Meg, doesn’t trust smooth-talking Ryder. He’s just a picture-less profile.

When Bailey starts blowing Meg off to spend more virtual quality time with her new crush, Meg decides it’s time to prove Ryder’s a phony.

But one stupid little secret posted online turns into a friendship-destroying feud to answer the question:

Who is Ryder West?

****************************

Review:

Meg has had a hard life. Her father died when she was small, leaving her and her mother on their own and struggling. Her mom worked two jobs and went to the local community college at night, trying to make a better life for her and her daughter. Meg was left on her own a lot, but her friends kept an eye on her…..her best friend Bailey and her friend Chase. Meg was a no nonsense kind of girl. She had a plan and had her future all mapped out. She did extremely well in school and was a gifted artist. She just wished that her bff, Bailey, was as channeled.

Bailey loved her video games. So when she met a guy online, (after a big breakup with her current boyfriend), whom was just as interested in her as he was video games, she was ecstatic. Until she told Meg about Ryder West. Meg immediately went into “mother hen” mode. After all, Ryder could be a forty-two year old perv. Bailey wishes that just for once, Meg could be happy for her and not be so uptight.

Chase has been in love with Meg for years. Bailey has tried to get Meg to loosen up and give Chase a shot, but Meg is too afraid of ending up like her mother and won’t let anyone stand in her way of attaining her goal of finishing high school, then college and securing her place in the world. She wasn’t even willing to entertain the idea, until that one kiss that had her thinking………..what if? And, when Bailey decides to “help things along”, none of our trio had any idea the things that would be set in motion. Will Meg finally give in and let Chase in? Will Bailey finally get to meet Ryder in person? And, will Meg and Bailey survive the tumultuous ups and downs of being bff’s? You’ll have to read to find out.

TMI is an intriguing young adult novel that didn’t really grab me at first. Everything seemed typical, mundane and ordinary. Then, bam! I got pulled in and couldn’t turn the pages of the last half of the book fast enough. TMI is full of teenaged angst, as are most YA novels. What sets this one apart from the others, in my humble opinion, is that you can see these things happening in the real world. There are life lessons in this book. You can see how social media can have such an adverse affect on an unsuspecting person when one post is made and then spreads like wildfire. And, the dangers of meeting someone online whom you nothing about? I don’t even need to elaborate on that. But, what grabbed me the most, and not always in a positive way, was the viciousness of one of the girls. Having two daughters myself, I’ve always told them no one is more vicious than a teenaged girl who thinks someone has wronged her. To say I was mortified by what played out would be like saying the Titanic hit an ice cube. If I could have reached through and slapped the crap out of the girl, I would have. Well, actually, I would have crawled through and beaten the hell out of her, but since that wasn’t a viable option, I sat here with my mouth gaped open in disbelief. TMI is ultimately about building trust and what happens when that one person lets you down and you have to decide whether it’s worth trying to rebuild. This book should be recommended reading for teenaged girls everywhere, as it shows some shining examples of what “to” do and what “not” to do.

Writing for Balance by Patty Blount

I’ve been writing for what seems like my entire life. But I didn’t get serious about it sometime over the last ten years. Prior to this, writing was something I did when I needed to vent, to unload. It’s cathartic. I’d wanted to write a novel for years. It was a dream that lived in the back of my brain, but every time I sat down to do so, I got bored and abandoned project after project midway through. It felt beyond my capabilities. Like I’d bitten off more than I could possibly chew.

So I gave up.

writing 1But I never stopped writing. Articles, poems, fan fiction, letters to editors – I begged for things to write. Eventually, I landed a job as a technical writer for a software company – a job I still hold today. This was the perfect career for me – I got to apply my various computer degrees with something I loved – writing.

And I was good at it! But I still wanted more. I wanted to conquer fiction writing, which still felt like scaling Mount Everest. Finally, my lightbulb moment came when my son’s teacher sent home a poor progress report and suggested my son read more to improve. He insisted there are no good books worth reading. I asked him what he wanted to read and he gave me a list. We made a deal; he’d read it if I wrote it.

So I did.

I approached this deal the way I approached any project at work. I broke up into smaller tasks and figured out how much I could achieve each day. The books I write are between 70,000 and 90,000 words. I figured I could write about 1,000 words a day, every day, and at that rate, could have my son’s book written by Christmas that year.

I wrote it and he read it, as agreed. The book kind of sucked, but it taught me some valuable lessons. First, I really can do this! I can write a book! That alone was a huge achievement. Second, it taught me the value of setting small goals. A thousand words a day is not a tremendous burden – it’s about three pages of output. Third, that writing goal is sufficient for me to achieve when I get home from work or during my lunch break, depending on my mood. I still follow this plan today. Some days, if I’m really motivated, I will write several thousand words. Other days, I’m happy with a single paragraph.

But I write, every day, no matter how I feel.

balancesIt’s not easy, but I’ve learned the things that matter most rarely are. For example, after I signed my two-book deal with Sourcebooks, I learned my mother’s cancer had returned and this time, it was terminal. My deadline for TMI was just a few weeks after she passed away. Writing during this time is what kept me from spiraling out of myself. Relatives were appalled that I wrote while she was in hospice but the truth is, the story was the only thing I had control of. I needed that control.

Do things slide? Yes. I don’t watch TV at night anymore except for a few favorite programs. When I’m on a tight deadline, my kids and my husband take turns with the laundry and cooking. And some nights, I may be up later than I’d like.

But when it’s something you love doing, it’s not a sacrifice.

Writing is my balance.

About the Author

Patty BlountPatty spends her days writing facts and her nights writing contemporary romantic fiction. A coworker once said if Patty were a super-villain, she’d be called The Quibbler. Her costume would be covered in exclamation points. Fueled by a serious chocolate obsession, a love of bad science-fiction movies, and a weird attraction to exclamation points, Patty looks for ways to mix business with pleasure, mining her day job for ideas to use in her fiction.

Though she’s passionate about happily-ever-afters, her first story wasn’t a romance at all. Penalty Killer, a whodunit, was written on a dare from her oldest son. Though unpublished, it was the subject of so many seventh-grade book reports that year, the English teacher requested a copy and later returned it, covered in red ink.
