Description:
Sometimes life takes you down a completely different path from the one you had originally planned.

After successfully rescuing the daughter of a draconian senator and other innocent women from a vampire psychopath, Sam and fellow warriors, Zoricah and Yara, have to trade sunny New York for gloomy London. Time is running out on their unfinished mission. More innocent people will die if they don’t catch the person behind the attacks in New York. But something is making Sam lose control of her powers. Something or someone. Ever since her first – and quite heated – encounter with Hikuro, her energies had gone haywire. The vampire king’s second in command affected her in a way no one had ever before. Her torment, however, is bound to get worse, with Hikuro’s unexpected arrival in London.

Ever since she set foot on vampire territory, Sam had turned Hikuro’s carefully controlled life upside down. He doesn’t trust her, but some strange force pulled him toward her; an inexplicable attraction that defies centuries of training. But if Hikuro is to keep his king safe, he must keep a close eye on Sam, even if he loses his sanity and his heart in the process.

Review:

As I said in my previous Dragon Heat review, Ella J. Phoenix knows how to bring the heat and she does it again in Vampire Thirst.  This book picks right up where the first one leaves off, and let me say, the heat in this book just keeps climbing.  In my previous review I made mention of Ella’s ability to create sub-plots and carefully weave them into the main plot, thus creating more story-building and depth to her characters and story.  So in this book, the sub-plot that was Sam and Hikuro in Dragon Heat, now becomes the main attraction.

Sam and Hikuro were already beginning to smolder in Dragon Heat, but in their story they catch fire.  These are two fantastically written characters who draw the reader into the story and make us fall in love with them.  Hikuro is Tardieh’s 2nd in command and comes off as being a big, serious and at times smug arrogant jerk.  However, thanks to Sam, we get to see there is a flip side to Hikuro.  Deep down he really is a softie at heart, who is tender, loving and patient with Sam. He will do anything to keep his lady safe, even though she insists on pushing him away for reasons he doesn’t understand.  No matter how much Hikuro tries to draw on his centuries of training and patience, it seems to just fly out the window where Sam is concerned.  There’s an attraction and pull in Sam’s direction that Hikuro just doesn’t understand, and for that reason alone frustrates him.  He’s never wanted a woman the way he wants Sam and he finds this unsettling because he’s worried if feelings get in the way, he won’t be able to protect his King properly.  I have to say I just loved getting to know Hikuro more in Vampire Thirst and found him to be the complete hero.  Loyal to his King and ppl, but at the same time, willing to take risks to be with his lady love.  Sigh……what a guy.

Sam is a great female lead. I really enjoyed getting to know her and learn her backstory.  We learn how Zoriach rescued Sam from an asylum where they were doing experiments on children may years ago and basically brought her back to life from her comatose state.  Ever since then Sam has been dealing with learning how to control powerful energies within herself.  She’s able to create energy blasts and shoot them out of her hands and body. However, being back in London and hanging around Hikuro has thrown her powers out of whack. Even though she’s drawn to him both physically and emotionally Sam is afraid to get to close to Hikuro for fear of harming him.  You see she’s already managed to knock him on conscious, send him flying across the room and knock him on his behind with her powers, poor Hikuro. As they intensify the more afraid for Hikiruo she becomes.  The more Sam tries to distance herself from Hikuro, the more determined he is to figure her out.

I really enjoyed watching these two grow as a couple. They were humourous at times, serious, and steaming up my pages. The more Hikuro learns about Sam the more he likes and wants to help her understand not only herself and her powers, but how to fully control them and use them to her advantage, especially when in a battle situation.  The scene where he’s showing her how to concentrate and put out a candle flame had me smiling and laughing at the same time.  As cute as they are as a couple, they also know how to turn on the heat.  The sexual chemistry between these two is so strong you could cut it with a knife.  Word to the wise, keep a glass of ice water nearby as Hikuro definitely knows how to love his lady completely. (fans self, gulps down glass of ice water, LOL!!)

Even though this one’s all about Hikuro and Sam, we learn that it hasn’t been smooth sailing between Zoricah and Tardieh since they got together. In this one Zoricah and Tardieh have become the sub-plot.  We get to see these two learn what it means to be partners in everything, and what it will mean for both of them should they become mated.   In no way does Ms. Phoenix dull these two characters, if anything they become even more interesting and continued to steam up the pages once they finally stopped being foolish and admit they definitely want to be mated.  They finally come to their senses and admit that it won’t be easy for either of them, but they are stronger together then apart. I really enjoyed this part of the story and was happy to see that even though the focus of this book was on Sam and Hikuro, Ms. Phoenix was able to draw Zoricah and Tardieh into the story in a way that suited their characters and what it would mean for future plot lines.  Now that they will be mated, we see how the rest of the Draconian world is reacting and can only imagine what the vampire world will think.  Will they be seen as betrayers to their ppl, or a new era being welcomed in?  Time will only tell, and from the looks of things so far appears they are heading for a bumpy ride. As far as their friends and comrades are concerned, they couldn’t be happier for the soon to be mated couple.

Finally in this one we get to see more of Yara( Zoricah and Sam’s friend), the panther shifter/witch.  She’s going to be quite the interesting character down the road.  So far I like what I see, and like where this character is heading and who she may be heading too.  Ms. Phoenix introduces us to a new character, a wolf shifter named Rafe who right now seems shady, but I know there’s more to his story, and have a funny feeling that Yara and him will be meeting up down the road.  I do enjoy a good shifter story.

Vampire Thirst continues to bring the heat in Ella’s Dragon Heat series.  Sam and Hikuro sizzle as they struggle to come to terms with each other and what roles they play in this battle against the vampire and draconian races.  The action is fast paced and the battle scenes are well written. The ending of the book had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.  I enjoyed the way Ms. Phoenix created this story, set up the events that took place and developed her characters.  She creates her main plot and sub-plots to go hand in hand, thus weaving her tale seamlessly and developing a world and story you just want to get swept into. Ella Phoenix has a talent for writing and it shows in her imaginative and inventive storylines.  I love the elements of mythology, magic, power, and shape-shifters that she brings to life before my very eyes.  Her stories are definite page turners and find it hard to put her books down once I get started.  Looking forward to reading her next installment and seeing what adventure she takes us on next.

Until next time, happy reading.

Review;

Having already read one of Ms. Phoenix’s books(Manataka) I was very happy to have the chance to read a couple more of her books.  This time around it’s her Dragon Heat series and book one is aptly named Dragon Heat.  I love books with dragons, vampires and other worldly beings, so when I read the premise of this book, I was sold instantly.  Vampires and dragons having to work together, bring it on.

First off, I should say that I have quickly become a fan of Ms. Phoenix.  I just love the way she writes, builds her worlds, characters and storylines.  She does another amazing job here with Dragon Heat.  We have Zoricah the Draconian Demigoddess and Tarhieh the Vampire King, both from different races who are known for distrusting the other due to centuries of battles and issues between the two factions.  So when Zoricah seeks out Tardieh for help, you better hold onto you boot straps people cause we are in for a bumpy ride.  Even though they don’t trust each other there’s no denying the chemistry between Zoricah and Tardieh.  The heat between these two characters is palpable and steams up the pages. There has been something between them from the first moment they met some 200 years ago, when Zoricah freed Tardieh from a Draconian prison. Now they must figure out how to work together and deal with their attraction at the same time.

Zoricah and Tardieh aren’t the only one’s who have trust issues in this story.  Both have their trusted friends and warriors who fight with them.  Neither Tardieh’s men, nor Zoricah’s friends/warriors trust the other group.  On top of having to deal with each other, Zoricah and Tardieh have to somehow find a way to get their respective warriors to trust one another and work together as a team.  As the story progresses we slowly see the two sides begin to trust each other and come together as one unit to battle their enemy.  Both teams are well balanced and compliment one another out in the battlefield.  As they start to trust one another friendships are formed and we get to see some lighter moments between the teams amongst all the darkness and battles.

As the story progresses, I became quite interested in the sub-plot Ms. Phoenix begins to create between two other characters, Sam(Zoricah’s friend/warrior) and Hikuro(Tardieh’s 2nd in command).  There is no denying that these two are going to tango, err I mean tangle down the road.  These two definitely have the wow factor as well, and I can’t wait to see where Ms. Phoenix will go with these two.  See that’s another reason I enjoy Ms. Phoenix’s writing. Even though she has her hero and heroine that the main story is about, she manages to weave sub-plots along the way that begin to tell another story, but without straying from, or disrupting the main plot.  If anything, it adds more depth to the storyline and gives the reader glimpses of what’s possibly to come down the road in future storylines.  I know it’s left me salivating for more.

Dragon Heat was a fun, quick read, with imaginative and very creative story telling.  Ms. Phoenix once again does a terrific job of creating her characters, mythology and storylines.  The chemistry between Zoricah and Tardieh is hot, and kept me turning page after page to see what they would do next.  The battle scenes are well written and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.  I have a funny feeling this story isn’t finished yet.  As I said, Ms. Phoenix does an amazing job of weaving sub-plots within her main story, and I for one can’t wait to continue this fantastic series in her next novel Vampire Thirst.

Until next time, Happy Reading

The Highland Guard Series by Monica McCarty-The Saint, The Recruit and The Hunter-combined review

The Highland Guard Series by Monica McCarty -The Saint, The Recruit and The Hunter-combined review

Highland guard

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

So before I get into this combined review I need to give you a brief synopsis of the previous books. This review consists of books 5, 6 and 7 but to appreciate these books, I do think that the reader should indulge in 1 through 4 first. That being said, Monica McCarty does give brief explanation in each book when other characters from previous books are included.

Our setting is early 1300’s, medieval Scotland/England just after William Wallace was executed. Robert the Bruce is trying to win control of the Scottish crown and has decided to form an elite warrior army. These warriors are the best of the best and each warrior possesses their own particular skill that is crucial to the team. These warriors are not all friends, and truth be told, they come from warring clans. However, to ensure that “The Bruce” wins this war, they put their differences aside. This elite army is top secret, and they are known as phantoms who attack in the curling mist and disappear just as quick. When they strike, it is quick, precise and DEADLY!

Here they are (the warriors that have their own book so far, with more to follow)!

THE CHIEF – Tor MacLoed, team leader and expert swordsman
THE HAWK – Eric MacSorley, seafarer and swimmer
THE RANGER – Arthur Campbell, scouting and reconnaissance
THE VIPER – Lachlan MacRuairi, stealth, infiltration and extraction
THE SAINT – Magnus MacKay, survivalist and weapon forging
THE RECRUIT – Kenneth “Ice” Sutherland, explosives and versatility
THE HUNTER – Ewen Lamont, tracker and hunter of men

Of course it goes without saying … behind every great warrior is a great woman! WINK! LOL

The SaintTHE SAINT – Book 5 of The Highland Guard Series

DESCRIPTON

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Magnus MacKay is the ultimate Highlander: tough, proud, able to master any terrain and to best his enemies. Called “the Saint” for his refusal to discuss women, as well as for his cool and steady leadership, Magnus hides a painful truth. It isn’t virtue or piety that keeps him silent, but a wound of love and loss that cuts so deep he cannot bear to speak of it. But when the woman who refused him is betrothed to his friend and fellow Guardsman, Magnus is tested by love’s battle cry.

A wild and innocent beauty, Helen chose family duty over her desire for Magnus. Now the anger in his eyes mirrors the tormented regret in her heart. But as deadly subterfuge stalks the King and his Guard, Helen vows to right her youthful mistakes with a woman’s determined spirit. Still, Magnus harbors secrets and an iron will not to weaken to temptation—or heartache—again. But as danger looms, it’s the kiss not of a saint, but of a sinner, that can save them.

REVIEW

Oh Magnus, bless your saintly heart my dear … you never had a chance with a woman like Helen! LOL

Magnus Mackay, the quiet saintly warrior of the bunch, holds a secret injury close. His broken heart. Years ago before this war, he met Helen Sutherland (the MacKay’s and Sutherland’s are warring clans) at the Highland Games. There is an instant connection that leaves a serious imprint. Through many years they secretly meet and fall in love, never consummating their love and leaving it honourable. Magnus proposes to Helen in front of her brother (whom he hates) and Helen is stuck making a quick decision that will alter their entire lives. She says NO! Her father is ailing and she cannot leave his side nor go against her families wishes. They are both heartbroken!

Years pass and Magnus is attending his fellow warrior and best friend William’s wedding. He is completely gobsmacked when he learns it’s to his beloved Helen (Helen is just as gobsmacked to learn her betrothed is BFF’s with her one true love). However, in true honourable warrior fashion, Magnus tells Helen that he doesn’t love her and her future belongs with William. She marries William.

William ends up dying in battle and has Magnus promise to watch over Helen (no one knows that the marriage was never consummated). Magnus reluctantly agrees. Off we go in the cat and mouse chase that these two engage in. However, what I loved about it was that the roles were reversed. Helen does everything she can to chase Magnus and make up for the wrong decision she made years ago. She is a strong girl who knows what she wants and uses her sensuality, healing capabilities to make her a commodity of the elite team, and favour of the king to seduce Magnus.

Secrets are revealed, lust if fed and a love stronger than both of them takes root all in the midst of a deadly war.

The RecruitTHE RECRUIT – Book 6 of The Highland Guard Series

DESCRIPTION

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca/ Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Fiery, aggressive, and bold, Kenneth Sutherland is a true champion—skilled with any weapon and driven to win. Now Kenneth is ready for his greatest challenge: joining Robert the Bruce’s secret army to fight among the elite. Kenneth’s best chance to attain that honor is by winning the Highland Games. Focused and prepared for victory, he is caught off guard by a lovely wisp of a woman—and a stolen moment of wicked seduction. Her innocent arousal and her shameless hunger fire his blood. He will win his place in the guard—and in Mary of Mar’s bed.

The ruggedly handsome hero-in-the-making stirs a heart that should know better. Mary vows that her surrender will be sport only—no promises, no heartbreak, just one night of incredible passion. Nothing, she swears, will persuade her to give up her hard-wrought independence and put her fate in the hands of another powerful man. But with every gentle touch and heart-pounding kiss, Kenneth makes her want more. Now Mary wants his heart. But is this determined champion willing to surrender everything for love?

REVIEW

Next to THE HAWK Eric, The RECRUIT was my next fave. There was something about Kenneth Sutherland that made me crave more. We first met Kenneth Sutherland in The Saint, as he is Helen’s brother. Throughout The Saint, Kenneth begins to put the pieces together and discovers that this elite army is exactly his calling. He begs The King to give him a chance, but it’s his brother in law (Magnus MacKay) who stands in his way. Magnus lays it on the line and tells Kenneth if he wins the Highland Games he’ll petition the King on Kenneth’s behalf to consider allowing Kenneth to become a member of the team. Magnus has no intention of letting Kenneth win anything (and plays dirty in the process). Magnus doesn’t end up getting what he wants and Kenneth ends up going through recruit training (seriously harsh) and proves that he can be a contributing member.

While at the highland games, Kenneth is spied upon by Mary of Mar while he is having a “role in the hay” with another lady. There eyes meet and something explosive happens between them. When Kenneth tracks her down she agrees to one night of passion. Well one night isn’t enough and Kenneth is beside himself when he awakens to discover Mary is gone.

Mary of Mar was previously married to a Lord who neglected his family (Mary has a son with this Lord who is removed from her home to squire for an Englishman), while placing them in serious danger so he could participate in the war. Once he was killed, she vows never to marry again and live her life unnoticed. Well once Kenneth finds her, that all goes to the wayside.

The King has announced she is betrothed to Kenneth an it just so happens their brief night of passion has resulted in pregnancy. Slowly, Kenneth begins to peel back the barrier of Mary’s heart and makes her believe that marriage is possible. His secret of being an elite member of this phantom guard however just may change all that!

The HunterTHE HUNTER – Book 7 of the Highland Guard Series

DESCRIPTION

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Prized for his unbeatable tracking skills, Ewen “Hunter” Lamont accepts a dangerous assignment: locate a missing undercover courier. But this is no ordinary target. Ewen has met his prey before as “Sister Genna,” a fiery, forbidden woman forever etched in his memory after one stolen, sinful kiss. Now that he knows her real identity, he’s more determined than ever to keep her safe. But without the protection of the veil between them, fighting the allure of the beautiful lass may be the toughest battle this extraordinary warrior has ever faced.

After her ill-fated attempt three years ago to rescue her twin sister, Janet of Mar has found salvation acting as a royal messenger—until she surrenders to a darkly handsome warrior whose rough, sensual kisses stir feelings the woman in her can’t deny. But when betrayal leads to danger, and a crucial communiqué is put in jeopardy, Janet has no choice but to put her faith in the hunter who can find anything—perhaps even her heart.

REVIEW

Ewen Lamont comes from a scandalous marriage that forever has foreshadowed his own life. He is the son of “WILD” Lamont. A man who lived to beat of his own drum, was a drunk and never backed away from a challenge. After his sudden death, Ewen assumed responsibility of a small strip of land and a clan that has been neglected. In order to provide for his people, Ewen becomes a member of the guard. He is obedient, tight lipped and lives to correct his father’s errors.

Ewen is asked to track down “Sister Genna” who is actually Janet of Mar (Mary’s sister) whom is presumed dead after trying to rescue her sister (this is all in the book The Recruit). She has been a courier for the King, passing along top secret intelligence and using the cross as her cover. After a passionate embrace, Ewen kicks himself for compromising a nun. Once he finds out that she is not a nun however, but the twin sister of Mary, he is FURIOUS. Again he is called upon by the King to bring her to him so he can tell her that she is betrothed to another. While Ewen knows this information, he neglects to tell Janet as he knows she’ll fight going with him.

Through their journey, Janet tries to seduce her way into Ewen’s heart. Ewen does all he can to fight her off knowing that is he indulges in his lust he has more to lose than Janet. He is fearful the King will strip him of his land and force his clan into perish.

Throughout the highlands, these two get to know each other and the attraction only grows. Ewen also makes his position on Janet’s part in the war known and she will not give up the only thing in her life that makes up for past mistakes. A war of wills follows!

So Monica McCarty is by far one of the best highland romance writers I have ever read! She can write a beautiful love story but that isn’t what stuck me in this series. She is basing her love stories off real people and real events. At the end of each story, she includes an authors note. This note consists of her historical research, who is fiction, who isn’t, what battles occurred during that books time, how the English and Scottish worked apart and together. IT WAS FASCINATING to read how she brings it all together. Her books are full of battle and history and so much ACTION. While the fluff is amazing, and the sexual tension between hero and heroine is intense, I was captivated by the war and who stood where and why!

If you love the highlanders, do yourself a favour and snag this series. I have rated every book thus far a 5 out of 5. I have never been disappointed!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Abby’s combination of innocence and willingness is intoxicating, and Nathaniel is soon determined to collar her as his own. As long as she follows his orders and surrenders herself fully to him, no one will get hurt.

But when Nathaniel begins falling for Abby on a deeper level, he realizes that the trust must go both ways—and he has secrets which could bring the foundations of their entire relationship crashing down…

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE DOMINANT is the second novel in Tara Sue Me’s The Submissive series focusing on Dom Nathaniel West and his sub Abby King. Originally written as fan-fiction based on FSOG and Twilight, The Submissive series has been released as a trilogy with the final installment in October 2013.

First, I must point out that THE DOMINANT is written in Nathaniel’s POV and it is the flip side/parallel to The Submissive. Where we were privy to Abby’s emotions and thoughts in The Submissive, The Dominant reveals Nathaniel’s inner most turmoil as he endeavors to keep his distance from the woman he has watched from afar. The Dominant storyline runs concurrent to The Submissive and tells the story from Nathaniel’s POV. The switch in perspectives is nothing new especially for fans of Twilight and FSOG. At the end of FSOG, E.L James offered up Chapter 1 from Christian’s POV and Stephenie Meyer attempted to write the Twilight saga from Edward’s POV with Midnight Sun.

The Dominant was interesting from the perspective that the cold façade of Nathaniel West hides the depth of his true feelings for Abby King. The background of the premise reveals that Nathaniel has known of Abby since their days in university. Abby had never previously met Nathaniel but his desire to possess and love Abigail King has long been at the forefront of his needs and wants. And the day she walks into his office, applying for the position of his submissive, Nathaniel embarks on a self-debasing internal argument. Disgusted by his own need to dominate, Nathaniel hopes to keep Abby at a distance when in reality he wants nothing more than to be loved and to love.

Once again, The Dominant is nothing new in the BDSM genre based on the fan-fic writings from the followers of the Twilight saga. If you have read the FSOG trilogy you will recognize the characterizations and storyline premises throughout The Submissive/The Dominant. In fact, there is virtually a character to character identical match between the different series especially to FSOG. The writing is simple; there is no philosophical conundrum or epic mystery to solve. The storyline focuses on a man whose need to dominate rules his personal and private life, and when he finds the one woman who offers herself up for be at his beck and call, he will find that she is the one who will finally break the ice around a heart that has been frozen for a very long time. Familiar story, familiar scenario, recognizable characters but a different perspective on the inner turmoil and emotions that befall a man who deems himself unworthy of love and commitment

A woman who gives as much as she takes, Rebekah makes Eric feel like a total stud–exactly what he needs after surviving a decade of watching the incredibly talented members of Sinners from the wings.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Man, when did Eric get so sexy??? LOL

For those of you have not ventured into this series, put down whatever you are reading and check it out. Especially if you love HOT ROCKERS who can rock it out in ALL PLACES that doesn’t just include the stage! WINK!

Wicked Beat by Olivia Cunning is the fourth book in her Sinners Series (although the pub dates are messed up as Olivia had some conflict with her publishers). Eric Sticks is the funky hair, goofball, voyeur, tall and all around fun guy of the group. Throughout the series he was my least fave character but after reading this book … *fans myself with a hearty sigh* he has moved up that list!

Rebekah is a rebel in her own making. She has some mental and physical damage from an illness and tries to live her life to the fullest although she has some justified fears. She is also the sister of the sound board guy Dave and has offered to assume the position (in more ways than one .. teehee) for the band while her brother recovers from a serious injury (read the previous books for more details on that)! She is fresh out of school and knows that an opportunity like this only comes once in a lifetime so she feels she has much to prove. She also has been crushing on Trey Mills (another hunky member of the band) forever and sees this as a chance to live out another opportunity. What she doesn’t count on is falling for Eric.

Right from the beginning, these two have incredible chemistry. They have the same off beat humour and feed off each other. Eric is instantly in love with Rebekah (Eric is the naive, wholehearted, puppy love, awkward guy in the group that is seriously underestimated) and his band mates, especially Trey, try to tell him to slow down. All Eric knows is he has to follow his heart!

Rebekah, throughout the book begins to realize her dream guy isn’t Trey, but in fact the quirky guy that is just as into fixing classic cars, dying hair all kinds of crazy and kinky sex ….. Eric. We also know that every good book has to have an antagonist of sorts. Well this lies with Rebekah’s former ill intending fiancee and her bible thumping controlling mother.

Okay .. so this book is not for the faint hearted! While there is a great story here, there is also some VERY KINKY SEX. These two love to role play and they have sex often, in many ways, and have included a third party at times. The scenes are written HOT, descriptive and ABSOLUTELY LOVING!

For a guy that wasn’t even on my radar at the beginning of this series, he sure came to the forefront. Olivia Cunning sure did him justice and I am looking forward to reading more!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Description:
Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

Review:

Magic Rises is the 6th book in Ilona Andrews’s Kate Daniels series.  This is one of my favorite series, with a super heroine, awesome hero in a fantastic urban fantasy world.

Kate and Curran are one of the top couples in the current literary scene; she who has magic and he who is a lion shifter.  An unlikely pair, but an awesome couple.

Andrews has a super secondary recurring group of characters that make each book even better.  Kate though magical, is human, and she has overcome many odds to become part of the pack, even if she technically doesn’t belong, as she is not a shifter.  But Kate is very strong, stubborn and powerful, and she is rightfully the second in command behind Curran, the Beast Lord, as she is his Consort.

Magic Rises begins with some of the pack children getting the dreaded ‘Loup’, which causes insanity and forces them to change into monsters.  Those that turn loup have to be killed.  When a close young friend of Julie, comes down with the loup, Curran accepts an offer to go to Europe to help protect a pregnant shifter between two warring packs claiming ownership of the unborn babies.  The payment for Curran and gang to go on this dangerous trip is a large supply of panacea, which will save the babies and cure the loup.  That alone is worth the danger they will face.

Because they know they are heading into a trap, Derek, Aunt B, Andrea, Raphael, Mahon and many others all go along to help their master.  What follows is an exciting story, with much danger, death and betrayals, as the truth of why they were asked to help becomes more then they bargained for.  The action was non stop, and at times very stressful.  I loved when Kate, who was looked down upon by the European shifters, managed to surprise them with her strength, toughness, and savvy.  They didn’t know what they are messing with in Kate Daniels.

Though there is one person, who is more or equally as powerful as Kate, who does know who she is.  Kate learns more about her father, and also about the man who brought her up and trained her to be the best.  She and Curran not only must survive the other packs, but Kate’s nemesis makes it that much harder. The last half of the book is totally mesmerizing, as I couldn’t put the book down until I read the last page.  The battle that ensued, was amazing, with some unexpected twists, and surprises.

The relatioinship between Kate and Curran is always the best part of this series, but in Magic Rises, there were so many times we felt Kate’s emotions, as she tried to rise above some difficult moments.   Kate, who has some of her powerful father’s blood and magic, comes on her own a bit more, as we learn that  her power is still untouched as to what it can be.  There is so much to go (we hope) in this fantastic series.  If you have not read Kate Daniels, I suggest you start from the beginning and read your way through when Kate and Curran become a couple. You won’t be sorry.  Magic Rises was the best one so far, in this great series by Ilona Andrews.

TAKEN BY THE VAMPIRE KING (Vampire Warrior Kings #3) by Laura Kaye

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 1, 2013

Henrik Magnusson is supposed to be immortal, but a mysterious ailment leaves the vampire king near death, and not even the blood of the Proffered, human virgins trained to serve the elite, can sustain him. Then he rescues a beautiful young woman from his enemies, and is filled with blood lust and desire he hasn’t felt for centuries.

Photographer Kaira Sorenson’s life takes a nightmare turn when she’s attacked by blood-thirsty creatures—and saved by a vampire. She should be afraid of Henrik, but she can’t deny her intense attraction to this regal, enigmatic being—nor the fact that her blood may be his only salvation. Now she must decide if she’s willing to be his forever…

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TAKEN BY THE VAMPIRE KING is the third novella in Laura Kaye’s paranormal Vampire Warrior Kings series focusing on the remaining seven vampire kings and their need to find a mate. Vampire Kings must feed from the ‘proffered virgins’ and without a suitable ‘donor’ Henrick Magnusson is dying. But the night he stumbles upon Kaira Sorenson he knows he must control his blood lust or lose the only woman capable of bringing him back from the brink of extermination.

Laura Kaye takes the reader on a fast paced journey as King Henrik quickly discovers that the woman he saved from an attack may be the ‘one’. When Henrik begins to feed from Kaira, her blood begins to heal the dying king, but there is something wrong with Kaira. When the mating mark appears, Kaira has three days to decide if Henrik is the man she wants for an eternity.

Taken by the Vampire King is a short story where the relationship between Kaira and Henrik develops quickly; Kaira accepts the vampire’s existence without question and is willing to sacrifice herself for the vampire king. There is some heartache and sorrow as Henrik learns about the plight of one of his fellow vampire kings; and the discovery of Kaira’s bloodline presupposes any storyline revelation about the history of the ‘proffered and their relationship with the kings’.

The Vampire Warrior Kings series was my first foray into the world of Laura Kaye and I loved the premise surrounding the ‘proffered ‘ and survival of the king. Laura pulls the reader into the storyline with an emotional tale of survival against the odds. My only complaint-the novel was too short and in doing so, I felt there was something missing in the overall telling of the story. Again, it presupposes the background information into the ‘proffered and the kings.’ For new readers to the series, this may be a bit confusing if they were to start with this particular storyline therefore I am a strong advocate of reading a series in order.

Dragon King Series
by Lindsey Piper

A fierce and sensual new paranormal romance series features demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a proud race on the brink of extinction.

Interview

TRC: Hi Lindsey and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the success of the “Dragon Kings” series.

Lindsey: Thank you, and thanks for inviting me to stop by!

Lindsey Piper PicTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Lindsey: Up until recently, when I was keeping my pseudonym all cloak-and-dagger sekrit, I would’ve been really vague. Now that CAGED WARRIOR and BLOOD WARRIOR are out, I can shout it loud! I’m Carrie Lofty, primarily known as a historical author but soon moving into New Adult contemporary, too. I also co-write erotic romance as Katie Porter. I live in the Chicago area, love Lake Michigan, and live for every possible day I can spend at Six Flags Great America. One day I’ll be one of those crazy people who base vacations on theme parks, just to try out newer, more extreme roller coasters!

TRC: You quickly released three successive novels in your new Dragon King series. Would you please tell us something about the premise of each of these novels.

Click HERE for our review of THE DRAGON KING series.

The Dragon Kings

Lindsey:
THE SILENT WARRIOR (April 2013)
A silent woman ashamed of her criminal background becomes a Cage warrior to seek redemption. An unrepentant fortune hunter will do anything to escape his mounting debts. Neither one suspects that love will begin when he becomes the first man in five years to hear her speak. (A $.99 digital prequel novella.)

CAGED WARRIOR (June 2013)
He fights for glory and for the privilege of continuing his bloodline, as the godlike Dragon Kings face extinction. She fights to rescue her son—the only natural-born Dragon King in a generation—from a sadistic scientist. As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, they learn that in their violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

BLOOD WARRIOR (July 2013)
A lone assassin is set on revenge against the woman who’s haunted his dreams and made him into his own personal assassin. But the woman known as the Sun is a peacemaker, trying to unite two halves of her fractured clan. These mortal enemies become fiery lovers on the run. From the Himalayan foothills to the Highlands of Scotland, they discover passion, trust, family, and how love can heal the most headed hearts.

TRC: How are all of these novels interconnected and will we see each of the previous storyline characters make an appearance in successive novels?

Lindsey: Yes, the characters recur throughout! Many people have said that you don’t need to have read the prequel novella “SILENT WARRIOR,” for example, to understand CAGED WARRIOR, but that it’s fun to see where that novella’s hero and heroine, Hark and Silence, wind up after the conclusion of their romance.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Lindsey: So far there’s the novella and three novels, with the last being HUNTED WARRIOR, due out in summer 2014. The entire trilogy culminates in HUNTED WARRIOR, while opening the whole world to new possibilities as their long-dead deity, the Great Dragon, returns…

TRC: What or who was the inspiration behind the Dragon King series?

Lindsey: I was busy watching shows like “Spartacus” and movies like Warrior, thoroughly enjoying the idea of arena fighting. (Notice that I said the idea of arena fighting. I wanted to keep it strictly fictional and within the romance trope, so I never go so far as to say I became a full-fledged UFC fan.) Following the RITA nomination I’d received for NIGHTFALL, which I’d co-written under the name Ellen Connor, I had been toying with the idea of writing a paranormal of my own. Thrown in a few decades’ obsession with the X-Men and poof!

But the real key that made me need to write it was a line from a song by the British band Bat for Lashes: “And when the battle was won, I was promised my son.” That was the thread that tied all those flashes of inspiration into one story, which eventually became CAGED WARRIOR, the first of the “Dragon Kings.”

TRC: If you could virtually cast the lead characters for the Dragon King series which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Lindsey: I always cast my heroes and heroines, from Robert Downey Jr. to Australian hiphop dancers no one’s ever heard of (here, at least). But I never tell! I don’t want to ruin anyone’s expectations with vastly different images they’ve already imagined in their minds.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Lindsey: In paranormals, it’s all about worldbuilding and character. But then again, it’s probably that way for every genre! No matter the plot and needing to keep it unpredictable, an author has to work within the frame he or she has established regarding the worldbuilding—be it underground cage matches or Victorian Scotland or modern-day Vegas. (I’ve done all three and more!) Content and believability must come from characters who behave consistently and a world where the reader can sink in without being jerked out by inconsistencies.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Lindsey: I can’t direct the characters once they’re established in my mind, or I run the risk of moving them around like puppets. It needs to read organically. So I start with characters. If I get them right from the start, the plot makes sense because everything flows from the believability of the hero and heroine.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Lindsey: A writer needs to sink deeply into the emotions and perspectives of their characters, which isn’t always sunshine and roses—not in my books, at least! There needs to be resonance and dimensionality that convinces a reader to cheer for lovers to find their happy ending, even if those lovers are of another color, race, orientation, kink…or species. We romance readers thrive on emotion. If you fall short on that score, you fall short on telling the story.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Lindsey: Personally, writer’s block is when my expectations of perfection slam up against the realities of (initial, first draft) imperfection. I love revisions, as a book gets shinier and shinier. I’m a grit-my-teeth first draft writer. I also get distracted by new ideas, which can add to a block. “But…but…that new idea seems so much cooler! I want to work on that!” It’s just another form of procrastination.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story or series?

Lindsey: Worldbuilding! My editor ordered me to watch “Game of Thrones” and read Kresley Cole. Now I’m a huge fan of both! Then I sat with a legal pad in Starbucks and wrote fifty hand-written pages. It was a whole world in one notebook. Making it consistent was one goal. Making it my own was another.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Lindsey: I co-write as Katie Porter with a historical and contemporary writer named Lorelie Brown. She has been my best friend and critique partner for about seven years now, and we’ve been writing together for three. I can’t get through a book—and sometimes I can’t get through certain scenes—without picking her brain for ideas!

TRC: How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of deadlines while still having time to raise a family?

Lindsey: I have an incredible husband who’s supported me since I started my serious push toward publication in 2006, and my children learned very early that when I’m wearing my headphones, I’m working. They’re pretty decent (ten year old) cooks. Support from my parents has also been wonderful. Balance…that’s the tricky part. I always take on more than I should, and I micromanage to my own detriment. But that’s still part of the learning process as each new stage of my career adds new challenges. No matter the chaos, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Lindsey: Three things at once! As Lindsey Piper, I’m working on HUNTED WARRIOR, the third in the “Dragon Kings” series. Co-writing as Katie Porter, we’re wrapping up the third in our sexy “Club Devant” Series, set in a New York City burlesque club. That’s called WATCH AND WAIT, out in January. Lastly, as my “real” self, Carrie Lofty, I’m writing a New Adult romance titled BLUE NOTES. That’ll be out from Pocket in February!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lindsey: Just to thank you again for inviting me to stop by. I appreciate it!
