Description:
Once upon a time…

In a world far removed from the days when fairy tales were new, five bestselling authors spin versions that take the classic stories into a new dimension. You’ll recognize Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and other enduring characters, but they’ll exist in realms beyond your imagination, where the familiar is transformed into the extraordinary and otherworldly.

Returning novella contributors J.D. Robb, Mary Blayney, Mary Kay McComas and R.C. Ryan (The Unquiet) are joined by newcomer Elaine Fox in this interesting collection of fairy-tale–inspired stories of romance and intrigue. Robb’s Eve Dallas must track down a pair of missing twins in a Hansel and Gretel police procedural, “Taken in Death.” Blayney’s wish-granting coin entwines a pair of lonely adventure seekers in romance beyond their lives as a servant and a sergeant in her charming 1816 fantasy, “If Wishes Were Horses,” which gives a nod to Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Fox introduces a charming ghostly television reporter to the woman who buys his haunted house in “Beauty, Sleeping,” a clever, turned-on-its-head version of Sleeping Beauty. McComas’s phenomenal modern retelling of “The Little Match Girl” gives a too-generous activist and the cop who thinks he’s too old for her a chance at love in “The Christmas Comet.” In Ryan’s Cinderella tale, “Stroke of Midnight,” a teacher travels to her father’s hometown in Ireland, falls in love, and nearly lets her wicked stepmother ruin everything before an improbable conclusion. Though varying dramatically in approaches to the theme, each novella successfully captures the spirit of magic and happy endings.

Review:

Mirror Mirror is 5 novella’s, each by different authors.  Each story is slightly based on classic fairy tales. Generally, I would not read this book, since I only like novellas from authors I usually read.  Since I am a J.D. Robb fanatic, I of course had to read this book, since the first story is hers.

Taken in Death by J.D. Robb is another can’t miss book with my all time favorite heroine, Eve Dallas, and her equally super hot husband, Roarke.  In this story, sort of a take on the fairy tale Hansel & Gretel, Eve is called in to investigate the kidnapping of two young children, and the murder of their nanny.  We learn early on that the children were kidnapped by their mother’s sick evil twin sister, who the children call “the bad witch”  The children, a boy and a girl, play a big part in this book.  They are frightened, as the ‘witch’ threatens to eat them, but the twins are smart enough to leave clues along the way without their tormentor finding out.

In a race against time, Eve, Roarke, Peabody, and their team, must find the children before ‘the witch’ kills them.  Eve always puts herself in danger to either save or bring the killer to justice, as our Eve always “stands for the dead”. This was an exciting short story, and I enjoyed spending time with Eve, Roarke, and her fabulous team of the best recurring characters in the literary world,

If Wishes were Horses by Mary Blayney is a take on Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  It is a story of a servant, Martha, who owns a special coin that grants wishes to others, but unfortunately never to her.  Martha works as a maid in a mansion, with many rooms.  Each night she checks out the chairs or bed to see which is the most comfortable for her to sleep in, since most are empty during this wartime story.  When the major comes home, he brings his sergeant, Jack, to help temporarily as his valet, while he recovers.  It is Jack who discovers Martha in the rooms, where she doesn’t belong. This is an unlikely but very nice romance, with a little push from the famous special coin.  A very nice story.

Beauty, Sleeping by Elaine Fox is a take on Sleeping Beauty.  This was a turnabout, as the man, Michael had a curse put on him by an jilted one night stand.  He spent over 20 years locked in his house as a ghost, as everyone presumed him dead, since he disappeared.  At the time he disappeared, Cassondra, a 5 year old girl, watched with the news about the missing man.  She thought he looked like her Prince in her books.   Years later, she buys that mansion, and soon suspects it is haunted.  What follows is a cute romance, as Michael slowly begins to become corporeal,  and the two of them fall in love.  Another nice story.

The Christmas Comet by Mary Kay McComas is a take on the Little Match Girl.  Natalie is the heroine of this story, as she is a very compassionate person who spends her life, working two jobs to help those in need. Natalie is well liked, except for one bitter police officer who doesn’t believe in helping the misfortunate, and gives her a hard time.

Miles is another cop, but a good one who always keeps an eye on Natalie, trying to protect her from the dangers surrounding her. He cares about Natalie, but since he is 10 years older, Miles thinks he is too old for her.  One night, her car is hijacked and Natalie is stuck in the freezing weather.  Praying for help, the Christmas Comet makes an appearance and Miles comes to her rescue.  The is a nice romance, and a great ending, with someone Natalie helped coming through for her at the end.  Very nice story

The Stroke of  Midnight by R.C. Ryan is based on Cinderella.  After Taken in Death, this one turned out to be my favorite story in this book.  So well done.  Our heroine Sydney lives in a poor community, and holds two jobs, both of which help out those who need her help.  Everyone loves Sydney, except her stepmother and stepsisters.  Every chance Margot, the stepmother, gets, she brings down Sydney.  Then one day she comes into some money as a gift, and pursues her late father’s wishes to visit his home town in Ireland. On the flight to Ireland, she meets a nice young man, Cullen, who happens to be  going to same town, Innismere.  What follows is a beautiful story of Cullen showing her Ireland, and both of them falling in love. In a bit of magic, Sydney found her Prince and a happy ending.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 3, 2013

How does a woman get over her one great love? With whitewater rafting, bluegrass, and a touch of revenge…

Kaye is an extreme sports addict with a kind heart and an axe to grind with her childhood sweetheart and ex-husband, renowned writer Samuel Caulfield Cabral. While Samuel enjoys a celebrity life in New York, Kaye remains in their hometown of Lyons, Colorado, running her PR agency and chatting daily with Samuel’s family, the beloved Cabrals—first-generation Mexican-Americans who have embraced Kaye as their own.

But when Samuel returns home for his sister’s wedding with a new love interest, stunning editor Caroline Ortega, the gloves are stripped off. Kaye is determined to unearth the reasons behind the death of their marriage and why two people who lived to love each other were driven apart, all leading to startling revelations about Samuel, about life…and about herself.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

HYDRAULIC LEVEL FIVE is the first storyline in Sarah Latchaw’s new adult contemporary series focusing on extreme sport lover and PR business owner Kaye Trilby and world famous author Samuel Cabral. The focus of the story is one that is heartbreaking in its’ premise as two people who have known and loved each other for most of their lives suddenly become strangers when Sam decrees he wants to be alone. From childhood sweethearts to bitter exes, the storyline is awash in sorrow, heartache, disbelief and painful realizations.

Fast forward seven years and with the upcoming wedding of Sam’s sister and Kaye’s best friend, the story builds using flashbacks, memories and excerpts from Samuel’s novels. We are brought into the happy and glorious memories of two people who have known love with each other but have also known pain, and no one more so than Samuel. As the story unfolds, we are pulled into the tears and painful memories of the day Sam walked away and the ensuing weeks and months when Kaye had no idea what had happened or why. But a quick trip to meet Sam face to face will uncover a nasty truth that Kaye had never seen coming.

Hydraulic Level Five is a term used in white-water rafting when ‘water pours over an object hidden in the heart of the river, water reverses upstream and creates a whitewater hydraulic. River travelers are often trapped in its dangerous churn indefinitely’ (Hydraulic Level Five) and it is also a term applied to the fall out and demise of Samuel and Kaye’s relationship. Our couple become lost in the anger and resentment; the failure of their relationship and marriage; and the never ending feeling of being trapped without the ability to move forward. This is a story about a relationship failure when two people who knew each other intimately never really knew each other at all. Samuel called their relationship ‘symbiotic’ and inferred and compared it to feeding off of one another’s strengths and weaknesses. In this, Samuel is lost and is looking for a way out.

Hydraulic Level Five is a deep introspective look at one couple’s relationship demise and the ensuing hunt to find the truth. We watch as Kaye is once again pulled into the churning maelstrom that is Samuel Cabral and Kaye’s need to uncover the truth-why did he walk away without any explanation? You will be frustrated, angry, sad and hurt but in the end you will root for two people you know belong together.

Sarah Latchaw has written an amazing storyline that was once a piece of fan-fiction. The entire novel covers a few weeks in the life of a group of people who are all involved in Samuel’s sister’s upcoming wedding and the what ifs and whys of what happened seven years before. We are introduced to an eclectic mix of friends and family who have stood by Kaye during her darkest times; the Cabral family who are like a second family to Kaye and her friends who have supported her knowing that the truth will eventually be revealed.

My only concern or true negative is that there was NO mention about a second instalment and the reader is left hanging at the end of the story. You know there is more to tell; there are promises made, vows exchanged and scheduled dates and time for talking.

This is not a story with a happily ever after but a story with a friends for now, let’s see what happens. And in this, there is much more story to tell.

NOTE:  The author has contacted me and has let us know: Skygods, the sequel, is currently being edited and will be released in 2014.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

YAHOOOOOO!  Larissa Ione is BACK with another series!  I will state this right away before I start gushing and swooning all over your computer screen … her Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series are a couple of my absolute faves that I have read over and over again!  When I saw she was coming out with a new Vamp series, I admit I may have squealed like a little kid in a candy shop.  Actually there was no “may” about it .. I did squeal.  LOL  So without further delay, let’s get on with it already!

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione is the first book in the MoonBound Clan Vampire Series.  We start the book about 20 years back when our leading lady Nicole Martin was a child and her family has been viciously attacked by vampires (a revolt of vampire slaves that have had enough).  Somehow Nicole survives and we are brought into present day with Nicole inheriting the CEO position of a pristine company that specializes in vampire research.

Nicole is completely overwhelmed with all the responsibility she has inherited and leans on her brother Chuck (seriously a sadistic SOB although Nicole doesn’t know this yet) for help.  The company specializes in formulating a anti-vampirism vaccine and in order to do this, many vampires are treated with horrible cruelty (once again, Nicole is not privy to all this information).  Before she knows it, her company has been infiltrated and Nicole has been kidnapped by a clan of “wild vampires”.  Nicole is now thrust into a world that she fears and finds intriguing,

Riker (our hunky, yummy, sexy vamp … oh and leading man …SIGH ..LOL) is the right hand man to the clan leader Hunter.  Riker leads this infiltration of Nicole’s company as this company is responsible for the kidnapping of a precious and highly skilled vampire that is treasured among vampire clans.  When he finds Nicole, he is thrust into flashes of history as he realizes that she is the little girl that his mate had been forced to care of and who Riker believes was the cause of his mates death.  Once he gets his hands on adult Nicole, all he can think about is vengeance.  Except .. that isn’t all he can think about!

Nicole is afraid and yet she is captivated by Riker.  When the truth comes out (so much more than what meets the eye in true Larissa Ione fashion), she is humbled, petrified and somehow grows very strong in her belief that the wrongs must be made right.  Riker finds himself confused by this human.  He has held her family responsible for years with regards to his mates death and the general torture of his species.  He is also finding himself completely drawn in by Nicole and it isn’t just the symptoms of the moonphase (this is when vamps need to feed and mate) that is causing him to fall for her.

Both characters must overcome their own personal feelings (good and bad) to get to the truth.  When a rival clan threatens, they both need to trust and lean on each other and sacrifice for one another.  I have to say, Larissa once again wrote a compelling story setting up a series that I know is going to ROCK my PARANORMAL world.  While she is building this world, she certainly doesn’t forget to build her main characters and secondary characters (who I am hoping get their own books).  I love that she once again incorporates medicine and science into her story line.  There are some intense fighting scenes, hot smexy scenes and the quick witted humour that are one of my fave components of a Larissa Ione book.

Here is a small blurb that made me LMAO!  Just to set the scene, Nicole and Riker just got a little hot and heavy and Riker is kinda freaking out while Nicole has come to terms with certain things ….

“I’ll never regret it,” she snapped.  “Because somehow I feel like I’ve finally healed.”

“What are you saying?  That if I open myself up, climb into bed with you, I’ll magically get better?  I’ll forget your family destroyed someone I cared about, someone I was charged with protecting?”

“Yes, she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.  “That’s exactly what I’m saying.  In fact, let’s try sex again.”  She leaped to her feet and tore open her jeans.  “Maybe my magic vagina will cure you of all the traumatic acts my family has inflicted on you.”

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!  Go Nicole! 😉

So …. will Riker’s personal guilt for the death of his mate hold him back from loving another??  Will Nicole leave the only life she has known and accept her fate??  Flip those pages to find out!  LOL

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Immortal Seduction
Gods of Love #4
by Jennifer Lynne
Release Date: 25, 2013

excerpt

Rated Adults-only, 18+

Retreat. She must retreat before it consumed her, this darkness. She had enough darkness of her own to contend with. Reluctant tears pooled beneath her closed eyelids and her throat tightened, hurting her. The poor dear man.

Stupid, stubborn, and with a soul-deep suffering that would take more than a flash of her power to heal. Her safest option was to leave here now and seek out someone else who would benefit from her endless experience. Someone who would welcome her assistance. Someone who would be unable to resist her potent brand of desire. Someone who would ease this incessant physical ache in her womb as it squeezed tight, reminding her of its hunger.

There were…she concentrated. Yes. Several candidates within a mile of here who would welcome her with open arms. Several hundred, if she expanded her search. A billion lonely souls, calling out for her guidance and her love, if she wanted to abandon this moment and this man.

But did she? How could she leave him like this? So hurt, so…enraged. How could she justify walking away from that level of pain? Walking away would give truth to the nagging anxiety that her heart really had disappeared down a deep dark hole.

Perhaps I really have forgotten how to love. Heartless, or helpful? It is up to me to make that decision. I can choose, right now. One path. Or the other.
The night breeze crept across her skin like a sign from some of the gods, and in that moment she knew that Hephaestus was not laughing. Neither was Ares. The deformed god of blacksmiths and volcanoes, her one-time husband Heph who had been treated horribly at her hands, and her powerful lover Ares, god of war himself, both had hearts bigger than that of the goddess of love. She could feel their well-wishes in this quest to rediscover her essence.

Laughter began to bubble even as tears dribbled down her cheeks. When she flicked out her tongue to the side and caught one of them, the taste of the sea filled her mouth. Salt. A symbol of truth in some religions on this earth. There was no choice really, in the end. Immortality was a bitch if you had to live too long with self-loathing.

REVIEW: IMMORTAL SEDUCTION is the fourth novella in Jennifer Lynne’s Gods of Love series focusing on the Erotes and the goddess Aphrodite. Immortal Seduction is Aphrodite’s story and one that contains a four-way (MFMM). The God’s of Love series is intended for adult readers and not recommended for anyone under the age of eighteen.

Jennifer Lynne has brought together a storyline whereby three friends must learn to let go of the past-one that is mired in pain, guilt and the realization that life goes on when others have died.

Enter the goddess of love-Aphrodite-a woman who is missing something or someone from her life and with the help of her three sons, Aphrodite will discover that the what or who she was missing are three human friends who have suffered together with the guilt over the death of a friend and fellow firefighter.

Jennifer blends the Ancient Greek gods with a contemporary storyline whereby the gods are unprepared for the love and emotional pull of the humans that have stolen their hearts and their souls. Each story focuses on one of the sons of Aphrodite and Aphrodite herself, and each story will see a resolution to a loneliness that had been buried deep behind emotions and power of lust, love and sin for both the gods and the humans they love.

Gods of Love is an amazing series that addresses many issues including transgendered individuals to loneliness and pain. Jennifer pulls the reader into the storylines where we can feel the emotional turmoil that each of her characters brings to the pages of her series.

About the book: Release Date September 24, 2013

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked-good witch with three sexy husbands. My sister Menolly is a vampire married to a wildly hot werepuma. And me? I’m Delilah, a two-faced werecat and Death Maiden. The Supe Community is in danger and now it’s up to us to unravel a mystery to which we may not want the answers…

When two vampiric software engineers approach us about a missing colleague, we don’t expect to find much. But then Grandmother Coyote steps in and our simple missing persons case rapidly devolves into a nightmare of debauchery, slavery, and corporate greed. Now, we must infiltrate and destroy an underground organization of influential men, led by the mysterious Lowestar Radcliff, before they discover we’re on to them. But one misstep puts our whole operation and our lives in peril, and I must unleash my powers as a Death Maiden, even if it means destroying someone I love.

Review:

As the D’Artigo sisters embark on trying to help out a couple of friends find a missing colleague, they have no idea how things are going to change. Besides their ongoing battle with Shadow Wing, who rules the subterranean realm and wants to open the portals to unleash hell on earth, they are approached by Grandmother Coyote, one of the Hags of Fate, for help. And no one, I mean NO ONE, refuses her. She informs the sisters of coming changes that will wreak havoc on earth as well back home in Otherworld. They are also made aware of a power emanating from a building in downtown Seattle. Seems these sisters just can’t catch a break. Oh, and Delilah’s training as a death maiden will finally put her front and center when she is called to go in on her own to take a soul to it’s final resting place…….or two.

Once they start their search for the friend of their colleague’s, they soon realize that things aren’t as simple as they first appeared. They soon learn that the missing friend was taken into an underground organization by a less than stellar citizen who has far reaching ties and seemingly unlimited resources. In the middle of this investigation, the Wayfarer, a Supe bar owned by Menolly (one of the sisters) is attacked and burned to the ground and there are several fatalities. And to top it all off, they have to head back to Otherworld, namely Elqaneve, for a meeting with Queen Asteria, who is holding the spirit seals that Shadow Wing is desperately searching for in order to open the portals.

Upon their arrival in Elqaneve, Camille feels an evil presence and as they enter the castle things go bad very quickly. Very very bad, very very quickly………….. The evil presence is a storm stronger than anything they’ve ever experienced. It is a living, breathing entity that is leaving complete and utter devastation in its wake. The sisters and their entourage were separated once the building started collapsing and Queen Asteria’s right hand man whisks Camille and Delilah away to a safe location. While waiting on the storm to pass, Delilah is called into action as a death maiden to escort a soul to its final destination. She had been forewarned that one of the souls that she’d be escorting would be hard to accept…………What an understatement. Once that job is finished, she and Camille make their way back home to try and make sense of everything that’s going on. They also have no way of knowing who survived and who didn’t. Will the sisters and their entourage be reunited? Well, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Galenorn has once again written an intriguing story of good versus evil, and boy, did evil get a leg up in this one! There was so much happening in this that it was hard for me to put into words to make it understandable. Suffice it to say, parts of this one were a little hard to read. We lose a pretty major player in the good versus evil game. And, for the first time in this series, there were loose ends left hanging. LOTS OF THEM!!!! Normally, at the end of the books in this series, things are carried through to fruition, at least the current story line. The next rolls into the next stage of the battle. This one left me hanging so high, my shoulder got yanked out of socket! LOL!! I for one CANNOT wait for the next installment!!

Release Date: Sept/Oct 2013

Review

About the Book: NOTE TO READERS: This story follows FOX HUNT, the first in the series and where Gina Zaffini is introduced. But you can read the second before the first. It’s something Gina would do.

Before starting, here’s what you’re in for.

The last heir of the Zaffini crime family, nothing scares Gina. Not car crashes. Not death threats. Not assassins. Not even Kannon Takahama, the legendary gunman her father charged with avenging the slaughter of his best friend’s family. Set loose on the shifting underworld of Bangkok, the two must outmaneuver a monstrous clan from the nightmare jungles of Cambodia, all the while negotiating the minefield of their mutual attraction. There’s a chance they could win the first battle. As for the second, well, Gina intends total surrender from the muscled hitman. After all, she can’t be frightened, and there’s nothing more scary than love.

REVIEW:

GINA TAKES BANGKOK is the second storyline in S.M.Stelmack’s contemporary action-packed The Femme Vendetta series but can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. Our heroine Gina Zaffini was first introduced in Fox Hunt and our couple from the first storyline have a small but revealing role in Gina’s story. Gina Takes Bangkok forwards the series by one to two years.

The premise follows Gina Zaffini as she must return to Thailand to hunt for the people responsible for the attempted murder and abduction of her god-sister. But Gina’s life has not been all flowers and sunshine. As the only surviving heir to the Zaffini crime family, Gina knows a thing or two about violence and murder. It is upon her return to Bangkok that Gina will be swept into a life and death struggle for control of the gangs and the streets of the seedier side of a beautiful Asian city.

We are reintroduced to Kannon, a man we first met in FOX HUNT and the man with whom Gina will fall in love. But a relationship between members of two of the most powerful crime families is not easy, especially when death and dismemberment threaten to pull everyone apart. Their relationship is slow to build and at times you will begin to wonder if either will survive the outcome of a potential war between Bangkok and Cambodia’s powerful crime syndicates.

Gina Takes Bangkok is a gritty read. It is not a story of romance, hearts and flowers. The storyline is rife with violence, murder, torture and a realistic look at the sadistic and murderous underbelly of Asian gangs and those who find outlets using the most innocent of humans. There is no mistaking the intent of many of the storyline characters. And no one is safe from the attempted abductions and killings.

Our heroine Gina is a strong woman but also a woman with a heart. She is compassionate yet knows that there are people out there who will take advantage of a woman in power. And it will be her compassion that may prove to be her weakest attribute when the time comes to stop the rivalry in Bangkok.

S.M.Stelmack pulls the reader into a roller coaster ride through the back streets of a city known for its’ beauty but also its’ decent into gang wars and crime; poverty and death. You can almost feel the anxiety and angst of the people as they struggle to survive in a world that has become foreign and is no longer familiar. The construct of a world that is awash in a colorful façade that hides an ugly culture beneath the silk and marketable goods will pull you under until your only recourse is to come up for air and start all over again.

Gina Takes Bangkok is a story of family and loss; pain and heartbreak; revenge and the evil that resides in some of the world’s most powerful people. But it is also a story of hope and love. When everything in the world begins to crash in around you, you hold on to the one bright spot in your life, hoping that both of you will survive to see another day.

The Real Story Behind Our Stories

SM Stelmack

Doesn’t that photo of us make it seem as if we could spend all day wrapped up in each other’s arms, whispering naughty stories to each other? Yeah, no. That’s not us. There’s a story behind that picture, the revealing of which I divulge on my GoodReads blog.

Serge and I have turned writing novels into a creative slugfest in which the only true winner is the story itself. He and I swear we’re never going to write another book again (one of us swears it every page or so as we intuitively cooperate in our dissension) and then no sooner is it out the door, then we start yapping about the next one. Why?

We haven’t a clue.

It all starts innocently enough. We have a wonderful brainstorming session as we invent a situation and so engaged is Serge that he wanders off and writes the opening scene almost immediately. That’s the way it was with the opening scene of Gina Takes Bangkok. We chatted a few minutes about the kind of person Gina is, he got a glazed look on his face and tapped out the scene at the kitchen table, while I crashed around him making supper.

During the next few months, he keeps tapping out the story, and I read the scenes alongside him. As the story thickens and more is tossed in, he and I brainstorm again. Serge rewrites enough to get the story back on track and ploughs on, until the next creative roadblock occurs. Somewhere along the way, we realize what the story is really about. But even then, Serge pushes on, and I stay out of the way unless he asks for feedback. My comments stick to issues of pacing and plot holes, the big picture stuff. I let my husband freewheel, let him play out scenarios, let those imaginative juices flow. Let him be an awe-rtist. Who am I to point out that every blinking person does not need to nod every blinking time they agree to anything anybody blinking says?

Once he completes his precious first draft, he hands it over to me to edit. His take: make a few minor alterations and have it back for the final read-through in a week. My take: change every blinking word of every blinking scene. Write more blinking scenes. This is where I typically build up the romance, tighten the inner conflicts to the outer, flesh out the characters, give them their quirks, dream up the zingers. Now, I am the awe-rtist. As I write them, I turn the scenes over to Serge who is now the editor. While I’m the most genial and empathetic and nurturing of editors, he’s mean, mean, mean. He tells me my prose is overwrought and pointless. He says I can do better. I huff out and just to show him, I do better.

There is a quick breather while we send it out to an editor. Once back, we undertake The Read-through. This is the grueling stage where the kids subsist on air and the dream of the day they’ll have a place of their own. Where neighbours clap their hands over their children’s ears as they hustle them into the mini-van. Where divorce lawyers camp out on our lawn, sure that this time we’ll cave, sure that this time there’ll be a marital implosion. This penultimate edit is the most excruciating marathon two people have ever willingly submitted to. It is a deceptively straightforward exercise: I sit in front of the computer and read the manuscript to Serge. We sail along, the words rippling out in a lyrical stream, on and on until we hit line four. He stops me. ‘Vintage’ was repeated.
‘How about we take it out?’

‘Moira, your solution for every problem is to take it out.’

‘Not everything. You’re still here.’

‘Ha, ha. Can we stick to the topic?’

‘Okay, what would you suggest?’

‘I don’t know. I thought you’d gone over it. Why are there still repeated words?’

Insert long studied gaze at screen during which much is thought and ends with “How about ‘retro’?”

“Retro? It’s not the exact right word but it’ll do.”

I insert the change and continue reading.

“Could you start from the top? To see if it flows right.”

And that’s how it goes for a full weekend plus weeknights plus another full weekend. Stop, start, stop, start, stop, stop, and stop. While Serge fixes my bungles (slight mishaps, I assure you) I do kid patrol and throw together meals of chips, water and whatever I can wave the flies off. Sometimes I’m doing the fixing, unraveling some particularly knotty problem while Serge gets busy with his nap. The man has been known to doze off while I’m reading. Those naps are always very rudely interrupted. An attack by a band of howler monkeys would be less rude than what I do. Finally, through sheer orneriness and because murder is too messy, we reach ‘THE END’.

The story is now worthy. It is the best we have; we poured heart, soul and bile into creating something that wasn’t there before. It, like our marriage, survived trial by creative fires. After this, I do another edit to make things as pretty as possible.

Serge and I both know that we are over-the-top and hypersensitive. We both know that calm minds ought to prevail. We both hope our children are not permanently scarred, as we try to salvage the damage by telling them that their parents are idiots who love each other anyway. Both of us wish there was a different way, and truthfully, we are getting better with each novel as we learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses—and our own, for that matter. Truthfully, I exaggerate the drama—though only a little. And truthfully, when we’ve hit it, when that piece in that scene sings high ‘C’, there’s no feeling like it.

Gina would compare it to sex. She might be right. Hmmm….

Pardon me, while I interrupt my husband’s nap. Not so rudely, this time.
