Feel The Heat

About the Book: May 7, 2013

IF YOU CAN’T STAND THE HEAT . . .

But once a video of her and Jack kissing goes viral and her luscious butt starts trending on Twitter, Lili fears she’s cooked up a recipe for disaster . . .

. . .

GET INTO THE BEDROOM
Jack Kilroy’s celebrity has left him feeling used and used up. While Lili’s oh-so-sexy moans when she tastes his delicious creations turn him on, he’s even more aroused by how unimpressed this beautiful, funny woman is with his fame. He knows they could be amazing together, if she could only see past his bitch fork-wielding fan base. Now as he’s about to start a new prime time TV cooking show, can Jack convince Lili to realize her own ambitions – and turn up the heat in his kitchen?

REVIEW: FEEL THE HEAT is the first storyline in Kate Meader’s new Hot in the Kitchen series. This particular story focuses on British celebrity chef Jack Kilroy and Lili DeLuca- an aspiring photographer who has put her career on hold to help keep the family business afloat. But the Italian eatery is bleeding money. When Lili’s television producer/sister Cara brings Jack Kilroy’s show to the States, the family restaurant is first on the agenda and what ensues is a cook off where power, seduction and sabotage make for ugly bedfellows and dangerous relationships.

I must say, that from the beginning, the storyline is very reminiscent of a couple of Chef Gordon Ramsey’s television shows where a family restaurant and its’ bickering siblings become fodder for the tabloids and television ratings. The story is filled with jealous family members; a patriarch too set in his old ways to see past the olive oil on his hands; and a heroine who had the ability to upset the balance of everyone and everything with whom she came in contact. In this, the storyline premise is built as Lili and Jack dance around their feelings and emotions for one another. And in the end, just about everyone will become a victim of the couple’s relationship disaster.

There are several potential storylines developing as the secondary characters are introduced. Jack’s sister in particular drops a bombshell that will definitely have to be addressed.

The relationship between our leading couple is filled with the push and pull of the unknown. Jack’s reputation in the tabloids continues to push at Lili’s heart, while Lili’s need to break free of her family and the memories of the past must be accomplished before she is able to live the life that she once dreamed.

If you like a storyline with heat both in and out of the kitchen, FEEL THE HEAT is a quick read for the romantic heart in all of us.

Captured by war…Claimed by desire

Review;

It’s been a very long while since I last read a Brenda Joyce novel.  I’ve been eagerly anticipating this new book of hers and let me tell you I wasn’t disappointed one bit.  Ms. Joyce has not lost her touch in the world of literature.  She created a wonderful historical romance that was centered around the war between King Edward and Robert Bruce, all the while weaving a touching and trying love story throughout.  For anyone who truly loves history and this time period, you can’t go wrong with A Rose in the Storm.

One thing’s for certain, Brenda Joyce did her research on this one.  For someone like me who isn’t a history buff, she certainly got my attention.  The names, places, and events that took place within this story had me feeling like I was living back in the age of Highlanders and the war for Scotland’s crown.  Yes she admits to taking some creative liberties for the fictitious part of the story(romance between Margaret and Alexander), but she tried very hard to keep to the times, the battles, the locations etc.  I had to go and look up some of the information that she was giving me in this book and let me tell you, she was spot on.  I was blown away by her accuracy of the war and what transpired between King Edward’s armies and Robert Bruce’s armies.  I actually enjoyed the historical part of the story, which took up much of the book.  I thought this would bother me, but nope, not the way Ms. Joyce did it up. She takes such a major part of history and uses it to catapult her romance between Margaret and Alexander. Through their romance we get to see the horrors of war, the politics, the allegiances, the changing of allegiances, tearing apart families, and how it affected everyone’s lives.  I for one would not have survived back then.  Heck I can barely make a decision when it comes to deciding what to make for dinner, how the heck would I have survived picking sides in the war for Scotland’s crown.

Amongst all this turmoil and battles somehow, Margaret and Alexander who are blood enemies manage to fall in love. Margaret is a Comyn-MacDougall who is allied to King Edward, while Alexander ‘The Wolf’ is a warrior in Robert Bruce’s army. Alexander at the orders of his King sets up a siege of Magaret’s home, Castle Fyne.  Once Alexander takes Castlte Fyne, Margaret becomes his prisoner.  However, he has a soft spot for her and doesn’t treat her like your typical prisoner.  Instead he treats her like the Lady of the castle that she is, and begins to develop feelings for her.  No matter how many times he tells her she will eventually change allegiances, she baulks him at every turn, not matter how strong her feelings for Alexander are growing.  Their romance is very slow to build and when they finally come together it’s a tender part of the book.  We get to see just how much this war and her feelings for Alexander are affecting Margaret.  This relationship goes against everything she was raised to believe and who to pledge her support to.  The push and pull attraction between Margaret and Alexander is well written.  If she had put them together quickly and made it an easy romance it would never have worked properly.  However, in taking the time she did with both characters, and creating a push and pull relationship between them, keeping them just on the edge of acting on their feelings, it pulled me in and made me want them together no matter the cost to both of them. Yes there was a lot of angst and ‘I can’t love him because of who he is’, but back then, you didn’t fall in love with the enemy or else your life was pretty much forfeit.  This romance was beautifully written and written with much care and compassion for both characters.  You felt every emotion from both Margaret and Alexander just pour off the pages.  When they were happy, I was happy, when there was trouble and turmoil that threatened to unveil their secret love I was on the edge of my seat with anxiety that something bad would happen to this couple.

The other thing I liked about both Margaret and Alexander is that they were evenly matched.  Even though Margaret is but a young 17 year old, she doesn’t come off as a child.  Margaret is feisty, has the heart of a warrior and doesn’t abandon those near and dear to her. The way she fought for her castle and people who dwelled within, shows just how strong, courageous and smart she is.   That in and of it self is what draws Alexander to her, her courage and strength.  Alexander is Bruce’s best warrior and it shows in the way he commands his army, sets up the siege of Castle Fyne and later engages in many battles throughout the book in support of Bruce, and defense of his Lady Margaret.  There is nothing this Highlander won’t do to protect his lady love.  Sigh…. I think I’m in love… 😉   His strength, nobility and loyalty are only part of what draws Margaret to him.  Of course it helps that he’s a very handsome and muscular warrior to boot.  Both characters know what it takes to stand firm, do what they believe is right, all the while being loyal and steadfast to those that matter to them.  Margaret and Alexander are two well written characters who balance and compliment each other nicely.

As I said early I am not a history buff, but this book had me captivated from beginning to end.  The battles, war politics, and romance in this book was top notch.  Ms. Joyce pulls out all the stops in this one.  I really liked the way she took such historical aspects about the war for Scotland’s crown and weaved a very tender and trying romance around it.  Watching Margaret and Alexander come to grips with their emotions for one another and deal with the battles, and hardships of war had me sitting on the edge of my seat many times wondering if there could even be a HEA for this couple. In the end Ms. Joyce did not disappoint. I truly hope she decides to carry on with this story and write more. There are so many more characters she can write about and expand upon. I guess time will tell, and until then my fingers are crossed for another wonderful historical Highland romance from the amazing Brenda Joyce.

Until next time, happy reading

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 3, 2013

Experts in the art of stealing time, Travellers live on the edge of both mortal and immortal realms. But a few fight their outlaw instincts…

Gwenhwyfar Byron Owens learned everything she knows about potions and spells from her two Wiccan moms, who are forbidden by Otherworld laws from teaching magic to mortals. But when their latest transgression results in the kidnapping of a mortal woman, Gwen figures the only place to hide them all is in Anwyn, the Welsh afterlife…

But Gregory Faa—a member of the Watch—is hot on their heels. A Traveller who has stolen time, he’s eager to prove himself worthy of the Watch, only he has a past with the dark-eyed Welsh beauty he’s been charged with bringing to justice. He’s tempted to just let Gwen disappear into Anwyn, until he realizes that she’s being pursued by a squad of goons and death’s minions.

Gwen is used to taking care of her moms and herself, so she can’t give in to her heart’s demand to trust Gregory, despite the fact that he’s as handsome as the day is long—and the days in Anwyn can last centuries…

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE ART OF STEALING TIME is the second full length novel in Katie MacAlister’s Traveller series. Travellers are supernatural beings who ‘steal’ time from other supernaturals or humans in an attempt to turn back the clock to change what has happened or prevent a tragedy from occurring. This is Gwen and Gregory’s storyline: Gwen is the daughter of two wiccans (two moms) and Gregory Faa is a traveller but unlike the first storyline, there is very little ‘stealing of time’ and most of the storyline takes place in an alternate dimension.

The focus of this particular story looks at Gregory’s latest assignment with the Watch-a body of supernatural police who seek out the paranormal beings who have purposely outed themselves to humans or in the case of Gregory’s latest charge-have sold magic to humans. But what Gregory will find is that not everyone is who she appears to be.

Gwen knows that her mothers have some issues as it concerns the use of magic. But Gwen also knows that someone is after her mothers and she allows herself to be pulled into their games and otherworldly dimensions. And it is there in Anwyn (or Summerland aka the afterlife) that Gwen and Gregory will encounter a world of knights and warriors, castles and soldiers, princes and magic, games and competitions. It is in Anwyn where most of the storyline takes place and plenty of humor, interaction with the otherworld beings and falling in love with the person who controls your heart.

Once again, Katie MacAlister writes with plenty of humor, one-liners and innuendo that will have you chuckling at the antics of those on the run for their lives or just trying to survive in an alternate dimension. The story is told from two distinct POVs- Gwen and Gregory-as the reader is privy to the thoughts and internal dialogue of two people playing a game of cat and mouse that becomes something much more. The relationship between G&G continues to build and of course, Gregory knows that Gwen is the one, when sparks literally fly whenever they touch skin to skin.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 15, 2013

Tommy doesn’t do relationships.
Livvy doesn’t do one-night-stands.

By the time she finds out that he’s a rock star with serious commitment issues, it’s too late, she’s fallen for him. But, how can an average girl snare a sexy rock star? By pretending she not so average…

Tommy, drummer for the band Cold Fusion, is used to partying hard. Every night there’s a new woman in his bed, and that’s the way he likes it. From the moment they first meet, Livvy intrigues him; she’s so different from all the other girls. Despite his reluctance for ‘repeat sex’, he is drawn in by her crazy antics.

Livvy knows she has to step up her game to keep the hunky playboy interested. When she turns the tables on him, Tommy can’t seem to get enough. But can she keep up the crazy charade or will she find herself in way over her head

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ROCK ME: CRAZY is the third storyline in Arabella Quinn’s Rock Me novella series focusing on the members of the rock group Cold fusion. This is Tommy (the drummer) and Livvy’s storyline. Although this is the third novella, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty.

Livvy has no idea who is the mysterious stranger at the bar. In fact, she is there as her friend’s wingman and when everything goes wrong, Livvy has no idea with what or whom she is about to deal. But a few dinner dates and evenings later, Livvy will discover that the man with whom she is falling in love, is none other than the drummer for the rock band Cold Fusion and Tommy wants a relationship based on ‘friends with benefits’ and nothing more.

The storyline and the relationship build as Livvy tries to prove to Tommy that she is a willing candidate as his FWB but Livvy must develop a thick skin and learn a few tricks to keep Tommy interested. In this, there are some humorous moments as Livvy tries to prove that she is ready, willing and knowledgeable about a lifestyle she knows nothing about and Tommy is patient with the woman who could very well own him body and soul.

As far as rock genre storylines go, this is similar to many but one thing I did take issue with is the lack of or no protection during sex. The storyline is rife with sexual encounters between members of the band and various men and women and not once was there any mention of protection. In this, I found the storyline a bit unbelievable considering the rock industry is filled with stories of STDs, AIDS and sexual experimentation. But, it is a fictional storyline, with fictional characters and apparently there are no fictional STDs.

If you like a rock star storyline that is gritty, fun, sexually explicit and pulls no punches talking about a lifestyle that very few will ever experience, ROCK ME: CRAZY is the perfect read.

Dangerous.

REVIEW:  4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Well JAX (AKA Jacquelyn Frank) did it again. She created another world for me to fall in love with! I have to give you a brief over view of this book before I touch on the characters/story line, so you can understand what is what and who is who!

A slightly futuristic/paranormal setting in the common world. A long while ago, a devious Dr wanted to create an anti-aging remedy for the human population. In the process, he ended up creating an entirely new species from the humans he used as his test subjects. They are referred to as Morphates who believe themselves to be superior to the human race, are faster, are strong, who develop fangs and claws and have the urge to drink blood. They are aggressive, immortal, sexual creatures who have been accepted for the most part by the human society as long as they remain in the “Dark Cities” that house common human criminals. In other words, they are to keep company with the “human scum”

Of course, there is always a few that want world domination … lol 😉

Liam Nash is our hero and he is the head of a top notch security team that has been hired to protect our heroine Devon Candler. Not knowing she was a woman, let alone the most incredibly sexy, beautiful woman he has ever seen, throws Liam back a bit. The force of attraction these two have for one another is nothing short of animalistic … which is appropriate … read the book and you’ll understand why! LOL

Devon Candler, smart as she is sexy has developed a weapon that can destroy the Morphates. The Morphates know it too and need to destroy Devon first to ensure that her weapon and secrets do not get out. Assassin after assassin has been sent to kill Devon, but she always seems to get by and survive. She researches Liam and discovers he has successfully killed a Morphate before and hires him immediately to provide her with the additional security.

Liam has never mixed pleasure and business .. until now. He just can’t seem to help himself with Devon as she drives him to levels he never knew existed. He is fiercely protective of her and as the story unravels he begins to discover so many secrets and what drives Devon to do what she does. He is nothing short of amazed by her … he soon realizes and is confronted by his team that the very desire that drives him to protect her is the same desire that can get her killed.

This is a sexy read that is filled with passion, action, and secondary characters that I cannot wait to read more about. I really enjoyed the world Jax has created here and how it came to be. I loved the science that she explains and the medical interventions that are used. Actually I loved it so much that I wanted MORE. There wasn’t enough diving into the Morphate world and I craved that. I had questions that I wanted answered and this is where this book lost a point for me. Maybe we’ll be lucky and have JAX deliver another book and turn this into a series.

Here is a snippet from the book that gave me a good chuckle and goes to show how the sexual tension goes on between Liam and Devlon.

“Is it better for you from the front or the back?”

He’d ask the question with just enough innuendo to get himself slapped. But this was Devon, and she wasn’t exactly the shy and retiring type who got easily affronted. Her eyes widened as she absorbed the intent of the remark, and he could swear he saw her mouth twitch at the corners.

“I think both,” she said softly, a tilt to her head adding speculation to the answer. “We can start from the front, and …. assuming you don’t get too worn out, we’ll finish from behind.”

“And if I do get worn out?” he asked with a chuckle.

“Then I’ll just have to lay you out flat on the bed and do you like that.”

Can you believe this is conversation about stitching up his shoulder?? BAHAHAHAH! WINK!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

•••••••••••••••••••••••

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

ONE HOT READ! LOL

Okay so I am going to begin this review by discussing the authors notes first. Eden Davis captivated me right from the get go as she addresses the topic that is taboo to many now a days … STEAMY KINKY SEX! She expresses her reasons for writing this book and to develop a platform for couples (or friends) to discuss openly how to add some VA VA VOOM to the bedroom .. or office … or kitchen … or car … well you get the idea! LOL I absolutely love that she does that. I was travelling in a car with my hubby while reading this book and we had the most awesome chat .. so there you go EDEN DAVIS, one reader for sure got your message! 😉

We meet our leading lady Lena Paskin immediately. She is in a bar enjoying the Super Bowl game when she meets Jason Armstrong (our leading man) and they end up flirting and carrying on until the inevitable one night stand happens. Both are playing a game with each other allowing their naughty personalities a chance to come out to play without the responsibilities of a relationship. In fact, this is what is so darn enticing.

Lena, is a serious professional woman, early 40’s, competing for a top CEO position at a TV network, normally straight lace and organized (man she knows her business). She opts to jump into a fantasy role of “Pocahontas” with Jason by playing the vixen who flies by the seat of her pants in the bedroom and is game to pretty much anything. Jason, is a serious sports agent, cool as a cucumber, gorgeous and well dressed, organized and knows what it takes to succeed. He also jumps into the fantasy with Lena by playing “Big Johnson”, the man who demands, give, takes what he wants and makes no apology for it.

When these two cross lines professionally, they realize they have the makings of a great long distance, “booty call” kind of relationship that is built on bets, winner takes all. However, they really start to get to know each other and they realize they just fit so well together. They both seem to bring out the best in the other, and push each others limits when it comes to their sex life.

Through the building of this relationship, they deal with the trial and tribulations of Lena’s competition (asshat who is also competing for the CEO position, T.J.), her busy body needs her rear end kicked secretary, family members and well meaning friends. Business agreements are tampered with, manipulation and secrets are used to destroy reputations, and one sex tape that can blow up all they have built personally and professionally makes an appearance.

PAGE TURNING! 😉

So why not a 5 out of 5?? EASY! There are certain words that I like to hear when enjoying an erotic story and certain words that just make me cringe. Some of the terminology and descriptions in this book just had an adverse effect on me. This is a personal preference and by no means takes away from the story and the chemistry these two have.

If you like SPORTS and SEX mixed together in a book .. well have a look at this one! You will be indulged in both!

HAPPY READING!

An Interview with Maree Anderson

An Interview with Maree Anderson

mariee anderson

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Maree Anderson. Last month, Maree released Liminal, her first book in her new Liminals series.

She is here to discuss her new release, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013/2014

Let’s meet Maree

TRC: Hi Maree, welcome to The Reading Café. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Maree: Hey! *waves from New Zealand* Thank you so much for inviting me here. (And I hope the author behind the book isn’t too scary for your readers!)

TRC: Please tell us about yourself.

Maree: I’m a Kiwi — a New Zealander, and I’ve been a full-time writer for a few years… which means that because the room that I’ve taken over as my office is right off my bedroom, I often get to “go to work” in my pjs… and occasionally scare courier drivers needing a signature on their delivery into lifelong therapy. (It’s not a pretty sight when my non-scruffy pjs are in the washing basket.)

I’m an avid reader of romance — paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi, historicals, contemporary, YA… you name it. And I generally read around 15-20 books a month. My bookcases are overflowing. My desk has teetering piles of TBRs. I love my Kindle and my iPhone because now I’m never stuck without a book no matter where I happen to be. Bliss! And when I’m not reading or writing, I try to get to a karate or dance class.

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Maree: I wish I could say writing has always been my passion, but I was a late starter. And I confess to being the teensiest bit envious of people who know what they want to do from an early age and go for it. You guys are really lucky!

I hadn’t a clue what I ultimately wanted to do when I quit work to become a full-time mom. The idea was to go back to part-time work once my youngest started school and about a year out I started to panic; over the years I’d had a series of meh jobs that I’d never enjoyed, and in a year’s time I’d be jumping on that treadmill again? Wasn’t a good feeling. I figured it was my last chance to try something “out there” rather than playing it safe. So I came up with the bright idea of writing a book… as you do. *shakes head in mock despair at her cluelessness*

I was reading a lot of Marian Keyes at the time — Sushi For Beginners remains one of my many all-time favorite books — so I figured I’d try writing something angsty but still with elements of humor. Man. Did those two pages suck the big kumara. (Translation: they were really really bad.) So I brooded for a bit. And then re-read one of my favorite series (The Gap Sequence by Stephen Donaldson), got smacked upside the head with a totally unrelated idea for a story, started dreaming about the darn heroine, and finally gave in and sat down to write it. Nine months (and far too many words!) later, the first book of a fantasy trilogy was born…

…and that might have been that, except for a chance conversation with a guy at a restaurant, who asked what scared me about taking the next step. Which resulted in some Googling that led me to join Romance Writers of New Zealand so I could enter the story in the RWNZ Clendon Award. To my surprise, my story finalled, and I was hooked.

TRC: What are the challenges or difficulties that you found in your writing career?

Maree: (Warning: Painful Honesty Ahoy!) Despite a number of my unpublished manuscripts doing well in the contest circuit, I’ve struggled with believing that me and my stories are “good enough”.

I guess a large part of it stems from the fact I’ve always set writing challenges for myself, and tried new things. Perhaps if I’d stuck with one genre and style of story, I would have been able to track the improvement from manuscript to manuscript and felt proud of my accomplishments. Instead, I’d straight away write something new, enter it in a contest for feedback, query it around for a bit, and get started on the next book/challenge. I never took time out to truly appreciate how far I’d come. (Note to family and friends of writers: please keep reminding the writers in your lives to celebrate each milestone — even if it’s just by prying them away from their computer for a celebratory coffee.)

And even after I was picked up by Red Sage Publishing and started working with editors who really loved my “voice” and believed in my stories, I still struggled with self-belief. (Along with the fact that although I enjoyed writing erotic romance, I didn’t want to only write erotic romance… and it was a bit tiresome being introduced as “This is Maree. She writes porn.” Sheesh. *rolls eyes*)

It’s only recently I’ve finally let go of my need for the validation I thought I’d get by doing things the “proper” way (i.e. write a book, query ‘til the cows come home, get an agent, etc.) I’ve discovered I can just write the stories I love, and readers will somehow find my books. I’m even getting fan-mail, which just blows my mind! So I’m proud that I stuck with it and didn’t toss in the towel no matter how hard it got — not that my DH would have let me. He reckons no way would he let all that suffering and angst I’ve put him through be for nothing 🙂

LiminalTRC: You released a new series in late July, can you please tell us the premise of LIMINAL, which is your first book in this YA series?  Also, how many books are you planning for this series?

Links to order Liminal:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Maree: The idea for Liminal was conceived while reading Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. I read the word “liminal” and my mind just went into overdrive. Simply put, “liminal” is an intermediate state or phase or condition; a threshold or transitional state. And it got me thinking about how people sometimes feel invisible — you know, like when you’re in the middle of speaking and someone just talks right over you like you aren’t even there?

And next thing I’d come up with Wren, a sixteen-year-old girl who feels like she’s invisible, and then discovers that often she really is invisible. Worse, whenever she reappears, people seem to have forgotten who she is. And then she meets Kade, and finds out she’s a lim — a liminal, who can phase in and out of the real world. Which sounds like a cool trick, but turns out to be really, really complicated.

To answer the dreaded “How many books are you planning?”question: Although I’ve embraced the joy of outlining, I haven’t gotten so far as to plan out how many books I intend to write in a series. I have an end in sight for Wren and Kade, and I’ll work toward that end with however many books it takes. That said, I have the greatest respect for authors who tie up a series and don’t keep it going just for the sake of it. Some of my all-time favorite series have been complete after anywhere between three and six books (Curse Workers series by Holly Black, Dante Valentine series and Jill Kismet series by Lilith Saintcrow, Karen Moning’s Fever series). So at this stage, I’m guessing at least three books? But we’ll see. Wren and Kade might throw me a curve-ball.

The Seers HopeTRC: In March of this year, you released all three books in your Seer’s Hope series.  Please give us a brief description of this series.

Maree: Seer’s Hope is the final incarnation of the very first book I ever wrote. It’s about Hope, a young blind woman who’s snatched from her safe, comfortable life and dumped in a primitive world of capricious gods and magic. Upon arrival she’s transformed—her eyes turn gold. And the people she encounters get one look at her golden eyes and believe she’s a Seer with awesome powers at her command. Of course Hope she doesn’t believe any of this until she comes face to face with undeniable evidence that she’s destined to save an entire race of people from a living death. And she’s terrified she may not learn to harness her powers in time to save those she’s grown to love.

I describe The Seer Trilogy as “fantasy with romantic elements”. The second book, Seer’s Promise, centers around Hope and Blayne’s daughter, Romana. And the third book, Seer’s Choice, around their only surviving son, Ryley. But Hope’s journey spans all three books, so it’s a while before she gets her (well-deserved!) happy ever after. Seer’s Hope is currently free at a bunch of e-tailers, and I’ve also published an eBook bundle of the entire trilogy.

the-crystal-warrior-TRC: Also in March, you release your other series, The Crystal Warriors.  Can you tell us the premise of this series? We also see on your website that you will be writing the 4th book in this series soon.

Maree: I released a eBook bundle of the first three books in the Crystal Warriors series in March, but all three books were published individually prior to that, beginning with The Crystal Warrior and Ruby’s Dream (both released in 2011), and Jade’s Choice (2012).

The Crystal Warriors are men from another world sent to Earth centuries ago, and ordered to bring back women—a desperate attempt by their leaders to repopulate a dying world. Unfortunately the troop encountered Pieter, an old man who had the ear of a goddess and was determined to protect the women of his village. Pieter cursed the warriors to their namesake crystals, but because powerful magic always has a price, he became the Crystal Guardian, forced to watch over the imprisoned men until each warrior is given his chance at redemption. So the crystal warriors aren’t the only ones being punished!

The series can be read out of order as each book stands alone and features a different crystal warrior. But I’d recommend they be read in order for the recurring characters and the little snippets that reveal more about the origins of the crystal warriors as a whole. (The Crystal Warrior is currently free at a bunch of places if anyone would like to check it out.)

Freaks of Greenfield HighTRC: You won a number of awards for your Freaks of Greenfield High series.  We also see on your website that this series has been optioned for TV.  What can you tell us about the premise of this book, and the status of the TV show?

Maree: The heroine of Freaks of Greenfield High is Jay, a cyborg who looks just like a teenage girl. Her creator has been killed and she’s on the run from a covert organization that plans to use her as a weapon. When she hides out at a small-town high school, things don’t go to plan because it turns out she’s evolving and experiencing emotions for the very first time. And then she encounters disgraced ex-jock, Tyler, and her logical brain goes completely haywire. That’s when everything starts to get really complicated.

Freaks was my first YA, and a really fun book to write. Amazingly it’s proven popular with its target audience as well as adults—men and women, alike. In fact I’ve even gotten fan-mail from guys who loved it, and tell me a certain scene makes them cry—doesn’t get better than that for a writer J. It was feedback from those readers that inspired me to write a sequel, Freaks in the City, which I published in August last year.

As for the TV thing: Freaks of Greenfield High was discovered by the executive of a Canadian production company, and they optioned the TV rights last year. The option has just been renewed, so we’re all hopeful they can find funding to take the project to the next stage. I’ve had heaps of readers tell me they’d love to see Jay kick butt on the small screen. She’s described as “funny” – which is entirely unintentional on Jay’s part! – and “badass”. I think Jay would appreciate the last part, at least 😉 And I’d love to see characters I’ve created on TV — that’s total dream-come-true material 🙂

TRC: You write in a number of genres, such as YA, Paranormal, Romance and Fantasy.  Do you have a preference as to which genre you enjoy writing the most?  Do you find it difficult when switching between genres?

Maree: Great question! I don’t have a preference, perhaps because regardless of sub-genre, each of my stories features a romance and an element of the magical. (I once tried to write a straight contemporary story… but it ended up being a humorous erotic romance with a heroine who had no clue she was a part-time cat-shifter, and became Kat On A Hot Tin Roof  in Red Sage’s Secrets Volume 30 anthology. So I give up!)

The only real thing I have to be hyper-aware of is the age-appropriateness of the main character(s) and the heat level of any romantic scenes depending on whether I’m writing for the adult or YA market. Honestly? I adore being able to write about a teen’s first love, and then change it up with an experienced alpha hero determinedly pursuing his bond-mate with seduction on his mind. I couldn’t ask for a better job than this.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Maree: I’m currently working on the fourth crystal warriors book, Opal’s Wish. It features Danbur, and there’s a bit of a twist because Danbur’s chance at redemption depends on not only the heroine of the story, Opal, but Opal’s young daughter, Sera.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you have a favorite place or time you like to write?

Maree: I wave off my husband and kids each morning, and then grab breakfast and a coffee and a book. I read for about an hour, then head into my office. I clear my emails and deal with anything urgent, then I work steadily through the day (with a quick break to grab lunch), until it’s time to do the mom-taxi thing ferrying the kids all over the place for sports activities. I find my slow-cooker is a godsend, because I can chuck something in it at lunchtime, and forget about it until I hear the ominous sound of the garage door opening and realize, oh crap, my husband’s home and it’s gone seven! Lucky for us, he’s a great cook and he’ll pick up the slack if dinner has, uh, slipped my mind because I’m on a roll. J

I also tend to work weekends. It’s hard not to when the computer’s just there, and I have to pass my office to get downstairs….

TRC:  Is there a book or author that gave you the inspiration to write?

Maree: I’ve already mentioned that Stephen Donaldson’s The Gap Sequence gave me the inspiration for my first ever story, but it was Angela Knight who inspired me to write the erotic romance novella which led to my first publishing contract.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Maree: Nope! I think if your readers have gotten this far they already deserve a gold star *g*

Liminal by Maree Anderson – a Review

Liminal by Maree Anderson – a Review\

LiminalLinks to order Liminal: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
Now you see me, now you don’t! My name’s Wren, and I’m a liminal who can phase in and out of the real world.

Sounds like an awesome trick, right? Yeah. Like everything that’s supposed to be cool, it’s complicated. I’m caught between two warring factions who’d kill to get a piece of me. Someone’s blocked my energy flows so if I phase I’ll get trapped in a ghostlike plane called Between… and die. And to top it all off, I’m totally crushing on my only ally, mysterious bad boy Kade. Sad thing is he’s keeping secrets from me, just like everyone else. My life’s spinning out of control. I don’t know who to trust anymore. And what I find lurking Between is the biggest shock of all.

Review:
Liminal by Maree Anderson is the story of 16 year old Wren Alexandra Gibson, who is slowly disappearing from her life.  Each day she vanishes more and more from not only the world around her but also from those she loves, literally.  As she tries to figure out what is going on with herself she struggles to maintain a normal teenage life.  But is there anyway to truly maintain this?  Her parents and brother are forgetting her more and more with each passing day and keeping herself visible to everyone around her is becoming an extremely hard task.  Until she meets LPD – otherwise known as Leather Pants Dude or Kade.

Kade is a bad boy with amazingly hot good looks, who seems to know what exactly is wrong with Wren and how to help her.  But can she trust him and what exactly does he know about her?   Kade informs Wren that she is a Liminal – a person that can phase in and out of the real world.  Which explains quite a bit.  Kade being a Liminal himself wants to help teach Wren everything she needs to know before the evil that is after her catches up? Wren soon finds out that Kade seems to know an awful lot of information about her – but why?

I found myself getting lost in Wren’s world in the first few pages of this book.  Wren is an typical, innocent teenager who’s life starts to spiral out of control. It was gut-wrenching reading her struggling with what was happening to her. Slowly disappearing from the world she knows.   Then in walks Kade – and who wouldn’t fall for this beautiful, sweet, hunk of a young man.  I fell for him instantly – and could not wait to see what transpired between him and Wren.  The whirl wind that Wren and Kade endures – with Wren finding her birth family and fighting to steer clear of the bad guys – left me wanting to not put the book down.  The ending was an epic cliffhanger – one in which makes me want the second book right now! Can’t wait….
