Description:
New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice brilliantly conjures the shadowed terrors of the Louisiana bayou—where three friends confront a deadly, ancient evil rising to the surface—in this intense and atmospheric new supernatural thriller.

It’s been a decade since the Delongpre family vanished near Bayou Rabineaux, and still no one can explain the events of that dark and sweltering night. No one except Niquette Delongpre, the survivor who ran away from the mangled stretch of guardrail on Highway 22 where the impossible occurred…and kept on running. Who left behind her best friends, Ben and Anthem, to save them from her newfound capacity for destruction…and who alone knows the source of her very bizarre—and very deadly—abilities: an isolated strip of swampland called Elysium.

An accomplished surgeon, Niquette’s father dreamed of transforming the dense acreage surrounded by murky waters into a palatial compound befitting the name his beloved wife gave to it, Elysium: “the final resting place for the heroic and virtuous.” Then, ten years ago, construction workers dug into a long-hidden well, one that snaked down into the deep, black waters of the Louisiana swamp and stirred something that had been there for centuries—a microscopic parasite that perverts the mind and corrupts the body.

Niquette is living proof that things done can’t be undone. Nothing will put her family back together again. And nothing can save her. But as Niquette, Ben, and Anthem uncover the truth of a devastating parasite that has the potential to alter the future of humankind, Niquette grasps the most chilling truths of all: someone else has been infected too. And unlike her, this man is not content to live in the shadows. He is intent to use his newfound powers for one reason only: revenge.

Review:

I’m stumped.  It’s not too often I have almost zero idea how to begin a review.  Hardest part of all?  My thoughts are coming across as fragments, or adjectives, more accurately (I realize I’m guilty of it myself — irony isn’t lost on me).  The Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice (*gasps*, it’s really, truly Anne’s son) was so…intriguing yet confusing…it’s hard to put into words what my final opinion of this book is.  Bear with me as I get the assembly line of my brain cranking…and construct said thoughts into proper, complete sentences.

Noah, Millie and Niquette (Nikki) Delongpre of South Louisiana vanished, leaving only scraps of their SUV as evidence of foul play.  A week later, Marshall Ferriot flings himself off a 31st floor, resulting in a permanent, vegetative state.  Coincidentally, he’s the person of interest Nikki’s BFF, Ben suspects, but Marshall’s been whisked away to Atlanta and is, well, unable to speak.  In The Heavens Rise, we go “backwards” — gradually introduced to pivotal characters whose personalities and background give rise to motive and ultimately lead us to conclusive pieces of the puzzle.  I followed the serpentine path (lots of snake references within) of events and revelations, but the unraveling of twists had me begging the girls to “Ask Dad!”, and simultaneously yanking out my hair during WTH reactions.  Billed as a supernatural thriller, it incorporates much more.  I did not expect mind control and monsters to play out and those elements are a huge departure for me.

In an impromptu romantic fail, throwing Nikki and himself in the pool of her new home (known as Elysium), Marshall and Nikki were exposed to a parasite of unforeseeable destruction whose properties “were the color of skin, and they were everywhere, clustered together in beige clumps that looked like shredded human flesh.”  Nikki only noticed the “swamp sperm” (she tactfully labels, NOT) when she desperately tried to get away from Marshall’s sexual assault in the water.

He had taken her by both shoulders and slammed her head into the side of the pool.

Total psycho, right?  This is a handsome, young boy from an obscenely wealthy family who gets girls “shitfaced” on Zima in order to have his way with them (perversely preying on the starved-for-attention “nerds” who were willing to allow him the use of implements and keep it secret).  Nikki’s rejection (even though Marshall was instrumental in her break-up with BF, Anthem) threw his obsession into overdrive:  a girl whose very name filled the remnants of his soul with sustaining rage.  Headaches, nausea, and other symptoms following the incident gain momentum and allow Nikki and Marshall the disturbing, not to mention intrusive, ability to absorb/control a person’s mind.

“It flows through you on a kind of conduit we can’t see.  The person completely loses all consciousness as a result…This is not possession.  You can’t see the world through their eyes.  The mind-control aspect…well, it’s just a by-product, you see.  A by-product of the fact that you can draw the person’s fundamental quantum material into your body by metabolizing part of it.”

Perhaps we can even add a bit of sci-fi to the book’s description?  I must say it bordered on the outlandish for me when the mind control theme was further explored.  While it may have explained the hows of it all, it couldn’t recapture my previous interest.  Perhaps it was the measured pace in which Mr. Rice addressed the parasitic effects that made me impatient?  This was unlike any other book I’d ever read; perhaps I was the only reader 226 pages in who needed more facts? 😀  A disjointed span of 8 years was also distracting when I had to re-read passages and/or look at the beginning of the chapter for clarification.  Nikki was the genesis behind Marshall’s fury, but her character wasn’t sufficiently fleshed-out.  We learn about the gaping hole her absence causes for her best friend and boyfriend, but…well, there’s just SO much more for you to discover.  I found it odd that Mr. Rice kept alluding to a “coupling” between Ben and Anthem; grief is brutal and can drive us to desperation, but I don’t know if Nikki would have approved?  Maybe we should ask Nikki?  WHAAAT?!  Invisible intervention like that of a guardian angel breathes new considerations.  I think we should tag the fantasy element to the list of themes touched upon in this book.

Seamlessly interwoven is an homage to Katrina, but with a bold emphasis on its neglect and racism of the poorer classes.  A brave and personal opinion to say the least!  The setting, the graphic details, they were deftly written and clearly Mr. Rice’s forte.  His honesty and imagery were quite evocative, adding another layer of depth to his narrative.  I was disappointed in the end because there was such a “negative” shift that sits uneasy in my mind.  If we’re fortunate enough to have Mr. Rice visit TRC, I’d love to understand his reasoning.  I won’t forget this book any time soon!

An Interview & Giveaway with Kyra Jacobs

An Interview & Giveaway with Kyra Jacobs

kyra JacobsThe Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Kyra Jacobs as our guest today.

Kyra is here to discuss her book, Armed with Steele, which is her debut novel.  Armed with Steele is the the first book in their new Hometown Heroes series.

Our review of Armed with Steele is below this post.

Let’s learn a little more about Kyra, before we Interview her.

About The Author

Kyra Jacobs is a happily married, mother of two, who grew up in Indiana. When she’s not pounding out scenes for her next book, she’s likely goofing around with her husband and kids, or elbow-deep in snapdragons and Lamb’s Ear in one of her many flower gardens. She also loves to golf (though, golf doesn’t really love her) and to jam on the bass in Guitar Hero.

Be sure to stop by her blog, http://www.indianawonderer.wordpress.com for updates on her writing journey and other musings as seen through the eyes of this Midwestern writer.

Let’s talk to Kyra!

Interview-Gold

Hi Kyra, welcome to The Reading Café. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Please tell us about yourself

Kyra: Thanks so much for having me! I’m a happily married wife and mother of two boys. We live in Indiana, and I’ve been a Hoosier my whole life. Though, I married a Buckeye, so we do bleed scarlet and gray on game days…

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Kyra: Truly, I’ve always enjoyed writing. The kid who got excited in school when essay assignments were doled out? Yep, that was me. But a few years back my summer flower gardening time was interrupted by a pesky broken finger. All that creative energy had to be redirected somewhere, and writing is where it went.

TRC: Armed With Steele is your debut novel.   What was your reaction when you saw your book published?

Kyra: It was so surreal. In fact, it really didn’t feel official until I saw my name and book cover on Amazon. Then it was like, wow, I’ve arrived! lol

TRC: Can you please tell us the premise of your new series, Hometown Heroes, and how you came up with the idea?  Is this book a standalone, or are you planning on making this a series?

Kyra: Actually, Lyrical Press came up with the Hometown Heroes theme. But I had so much fun writing about a sexy cop that I decided to continue on with a second book featuring a smokin’ hot firefighter. I’ve pulled the main characters from the Armed With Steele into this storyline, too, and have ideas that could potentially bring a few more books into the series as well.

Armed with SteeleTRC: Can you give us a brief description of the first book in your series, Armed With Steele?

Kyra: You bet. Armed With Steele is a fun romantic suspense. Think, a modern Stephanie Plum set in Fort Wayne, Indiana. But beyond the sarcasm and innuendoes lies a story about true friendship and the lengths we’re willing to go to help the ones we love. Jessica Hartley is a 25-year-old web designer who is trying to solve the mystery behind her best friend’s near-fatal car accident. Patrolman Nate Steele is the only one Jessica can seem to convince the accident was no such thing. After his superiors end their investigation without resolution, he convinces Jessica to work with him off the books. So introvert Jessica ends up working in a prestigious local office by day, and trying to resist her handsome undercover partner by night. And there just might be a slobbery bulldog, a few touchy-feely coworkers, and Nate’s vicious ex-girlfriend for Jessica to contend with as well…

Links to order Armed with Steele: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

TRC: If your book becomes a movie, do you have preferences as to whom you would like to play your characters?

Kyra: Ah, I knew eventually I’d be asked this question. Not really. I always kinda pictured Nate to be Kellan Lutz, but Chris Pine would do nicely as well. For Jessica, I never had pinned anyone in particular down. Maybe Olivia Wilde?

TRC: You write Romance Suspense, is there any other genre you would like to try?

Kyra: I actually completed the first draft of book one in a YA trilogy this spring involving a rule-breaking guardian angel, and hope to return to it after it has had time to “simmer”.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Kyra: Right now I’m tweaking revisions on the follow up to Armed With Steele, whose working title is Flirting With Fire. Along with the YA series, I’ve also got two other romances brewing.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you have a favorite place or time you like to write?

Kyra: Yes, it’s called “write whenever I can squeeze time in”. 🙂 On top of being a wife and mommy, I also work full time out of the home. Needless to say, finding time to write can be a challenge. Typically, though, I’ll try to carve out some time at night after the kids are in bed. On the rare occasion I have time to write during the day, I love to sit with my laptop in a quiet, sunny spot.

TRC: What are the challenges or difficulties that you found in your writing career?

Kyra: The two that come to mind are time and perfectionism. My time is limited, which can frustrate the hell out of my writing muse. And I’m a bit of a perfectionist, which also frustrates said muse. Someday, perhaps, we’ll learn to get along…

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information between each other and their family and spouses.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kyra: Oh yes, lots of bouncing ideas around. My husband, of course, and my close friends. Several of my good friends are writers as well, and we could sit and talk for hours about plots, characters, motivations, and conflict.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kyra: Better not. My pesky writing muse is starting to nag at me already that I should be editing by now…

Description:
What happens undercover, stays under covers.

Jessica Hartley is looking for answers surrounding the mysterious car accident that nearly claimed the life of her best friend. She’s willing to risk it all, even her fledgling business, to find the person responsible and bring them to justice. Nate Steele is more than willing to help Jessica, but for reasons all his own. He’s been watching the infamous Maxwell Office Solutions for some time now, convinced thereis more going on than meets the eye. When his chief issues a cease and desist order yet again, Nate has no choice but to accept inexperienced Jessica as an undercover partner outside the letter of the law.

Will Jessica and Nate be able to flush out Maxwell’s elusive villain, or will their growing attraction for each other sabotage their undercover ploy? Motives aren’t always what they seem when Jessica finds herself armed with Steele.

Review:

I totally loved Armed with Steele by Kyra Jacobs. It’s a great murder mystery, with a few really hot kisses thrown in for good measure 😉 The characters are well written, and I immediately took to them. The nerdy computer genius meets the gorgeous cop, what more does a girl need 😉
It had a few twists and turns, and one person that I didn’t expect was in on it :-O

Jessica is devastated to find out her best friend and room mate Grace, has been in a serious car crash, (Jessica blames herself, as she was dodging her friend’s calls about a double date). This brings her to meeting the gorgeous officer Nate Steele, who is investigating the crash.

These characters had me cringing, and laughing at the most odd moments (And those hot kisses, damn, almost melted my Kindle ). Then Nate tells Jessica that the state is closing the case, he drops into their conversation that he is part owner an investigating agency, and they have been following this case.  He suggests Jessica work with him to crack the case.

Overall, this was an extremely enjoyable read that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone who wants a little romance and suspense in their lives.

Made of Stars by Kelley York – a Review

Made of Stars by Kelley York – a Review

Description:
When eighteen-year-old Hunter Jackson and his half sister, Ashlin, return to their dad’s for the first winter in years, they expect everything to be just like the warmer months they’d spent there as kids. And it is—at first. But Chance, the charismatic and adventurous boy who made their summers epic, is harboring deep secrets. Secrets that are quickly spiraling into something else entirely.

The reason they’ve never met Chance’s parents or seen his home is becoming clearer. And what the siblings used to think of as Chance’s quirks—the outrageous stories, his clinginess, his dangerous impulsiveness—are now warning signs that something is seriously off.

Then Chance’s mom turns up with a bullet to the head, and all eyes shift to Chance and his dad. Hunter and Ashlin know Chance is innocent…they just have to prove it. But how can they protect the boy they both love when they can’t trust a word Chance says?

Review:

Made of Stars by Kelley York is a surprising different type of story that I have read in the YA genre.  This is not dystopian, but a simple warm and heart wrenching story of three young adults, whom we meet when they were children, with the focus of most of the story taking place when they were 18.  Made of Stars was my first book by York, and it was so well written. It kept my attention from the start, even when the story changed a bit, and you saw where it was heading, York just kept me turning the pages.

Our protagonists are a threesome, Hunter and Ashlin, who are half siblings, as they share the same father, but each live with their mother. Each summer they would stay with their father, and enjoying their time together.  York made them both so great, as their closeness, and loyalty to each other was sweet, and you loved them both.  Into this mix, was Chance, a local boy who became their trusted and adored friend.  Chance spent more time with Hunter and Ashlin, then he did at home; being young, neither would wonder why.  Chance, was sort of their leader, and he reminded me a bit of Peter Pan, fun loving, playful, daring and fearless.  All three of them were very close, each looking forward to the time they spent with each other.  Due to an injury to Hunter & Ashlin’s father, two years pass before they come back to spend the winter with their father.  They are now 18, planning their lives to go to college.  Hunter has a girlfriend, Rachel, who will spend part of the winter with them.

But now that they are older, things have changed somewhat.  Both Hunter and Ashlin are excited to see Chance again, and privately each have strong feelings for Chance.  But when Rachel is with them, she notices how Chance looks at Hunter, & suspects the feelings might be the same.  Ashlin, who begins to realize that Chance loves Hunter, tries to talk to Hunter. But he refuses to acknowledge that Chance is anything more then a very close adored friend.  Even though this is an important part of the story, the main focus changes to a deep concern for Chance. Hunter and Ashlin begin to find out the Chance has been lying about his life at home, and when they see bruises on him, they suspect the worst.

The emotional revelations change everything, as the story heads to an exciting and tragic climax.  The close bond of the threesome is pushed to the limit, as they face the terrible truths, which will change everything.   Throughout the story, you sensed not all was as it seemed about Chance, and the future for the threesome was headed toward something very dark. What happens?  You will need to read to find out.

I do have to say that Kelley York has impressed me with her wonderful writing, in this different story. I loved her characters, and the closeness of the siblings, as well as how all of them felt for Chance.  This was a wonderful story, and even though this is considered YA, Made of Stars can be read by everyone.

REVIEW: OBSESSION is the third and final instalment in Jennifer Lyon’s contemporary romance Plus One Chronicles trilogy focusing on bakery owner Kat Thayne and MMA Billionaire Sloane Michaels.

Obsession furthers the relationship between Kat and Sloane, but a relationship that balances between love and revenge. With Sloane preparing for an upcoming fight, Kat knows that winning isn’t the ultimate aim-but revenge for a loss that has broken Sloane’s heart. If Sloane continues on his current path, Kat will lose Sloane in more ways than one.

There are three interconnected storylines throughout Obsession and each will push Sloane and Kat into a struggle between right and wrong; life and death. As mentor to several street kids, Sloane will struggle with the belief that he has failed not one but them all. This is a story of one man’s obsession about avenging the past and about the woman to whom he has lost his heart.

The reader is pulled into a story that will break your heart. We watch as one man struggles to stay alive long enough to watch Sloane’s final fight and another man who struggles with the realization that he is unable to save everyone. But his biggest fear is not being able to save the woman with whom he has fallen in love.

Jennifer Lyon has written a series that will be remembered for the heart breaking sorrow about a man who is determined to avenge the death of his sister but also about a man who believes he is not worthy of one woman’s love. Sloane Michaels will find a place in your soul, that was once empty and waiting to be filled, and he is the man who has the ability to overcome the pain of loss and face his demons head on.

Obsession is the final storyline and with it comes the end of the trilogy. There is a finality to the story and one that will be acceptable to everyone but I am hoping that Jennifer (begs Jennifer) will write a novella or two that will re-visit Sloane and Kat as they begin their new life together. We get our happily ever after but there is always room for happily ever after-plus one.

BOUND AND DETERMINED (Sexy Capers #1) by Shayla Black

Bound and DeterminedABOUT THE BOOK: Re –release September 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

With her brother wrongfully accused of embezzling millions, Kerry Sullivan can’t face one more humiliating hang-up from the man she’s begging for help. Rafael Dawson may be one of the top electronic security experts in the country-and the only man who can prove her brother’s innocence- but his phone manners are appalling. Too bad kidnapping the man isn’t an option. Or is it?

There’s nothing Kerry wouldn’t do for her brother, and there are lots of things she longs to do to Rafe Dawson when he’s lying tied-up and naked in her secret hideaway. But when the tables get turned, Kerry finds herself at Rafe’s mercy. And the only way to get her way is to let him have his way-with her.

REVIEW: BOUND AND DETERMINED is the first book in Shayla Black’s Sexy Capers re-released contemporary, romance adult series. This is Kerry Sullivan and Rafe Dawson’s story.

Kerry Sullivan needs to prove her brother’s innocence. Charged with the theft of over three million dollars from the bank in which he works, Mark Dawson awaits trial in prison not knowing who or why he was set up to take the fall. Kerry hopes to get computer expert and one-time hacker Rafe Dawson to find the proof that her brother has been framed. But when all calls and attempts to contact are met with dead ends, hang ups and threats, Kerry resorts to one final desperate attempt-kidnap Rafe Dawson and hold him hostage until he agrees to take her brother’s case.

What ensues is the building of a relationship between Kerry and Rafe-one that started with Rafe drugged and in hand-cuffs and ended with a broken heart and shattered dreams. Rafe turns the tables on his would –be captor and demands 48 hours to do whatever he wants to and with Kerry in return for his assistance. What Rafe never expected was to fall in love with the woman who once held him hostage.

The storyline follows Rafe and Kerry as they begin to uncover a trail that leads to the person behind Mark’s fraudulent charges. But along the way friends, family and co-workers must be ruled out before the identity of the person responsible is revealed. The reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of one woman’s attempts to right the wrongs against her brother and in doing so, she will fall in love with a man who believes he is not worthy of love or affection.

The storyline is fast paced; the secondary characters are colorful if not limited in their exposure as most of the storyline is spent in the developing relationship between Kerry and Rafe and, the search for clues about the missing money and its connections to Kerry’s brother Mark. Through reflection and conversation we learn the background into both Kerry and Rafe’s family history and the real reason Rafe considers himself unworthy of Kerry’s love.

Shayla Black combines the search for the truth with the building of a relationship that will end with a broken heart for two people who would never have met had it not been for an act of betrayal against someone close. The outcome was predictable but the ride to the end was entertaining.

If you like a love story with a little mystery, a little suspense and a whole lot of sexual heat, BOUND AND DETERMINED is the perfect read with imperfect people who know something about determination and love.

If the Feds want to nail a Mafia kingpin, they need a trap. Enter Mark Sullivan, totally built for the job-to go undercover as a male stripper in the mobster’s Vegas club. The club’s owner, Nicki, is an unexpected perk. But Mark and Nicki have more in common than sizzling sexual chemistry. They each have their share of secrets, and with the mob closing in, what gets exposed is as irresistible as it is dangerous.

REVIEW: STRIP SEARCH is the second storyline in Shayla Black’s (aka Shelley Bradley) Sexy Capers contemporary romance, mystery series. This is Mark Sullivan’s story and we first me Mark in Bound and Determined as his sister was struggling to prove his innocence in a multi million dollar theft at the bank where he worked.

Strip Search begins approximately a year or more after Bound and Determined. Our hero Mark is now divorced from his wife, his sister is married to the man she abducted and, Mark is now working for his brother in law’s corporate investigations firm. His latest assignment will pit him against some of the people involved with his ex wife and her attempts to pin the theft of millions of dollars on Mark.

Nicki is the owner of a Vegas strip club and Mark is going undercover as a stripper in an attempt to seduce his way into Nicki’s bed and eventually her books. With an FBI operative non-responsive, Mark must go in blind to try and discover who and what is responsible for the money laundering and missing millions in the Vegas club. But to Mark’s surprise, Nicki doesn’t seem like the type of person to launder millions but her infamous mafia family is in the FBI’s sights.

The sexual relationship between Nicki and Mark is sensual and entertaining but there is a big elephant in the room as it pertains to Mark. He is a man unable to get past his ex-wife’s betrayal and it is affecting his relationship with Nicki. He can no longer trust anyone and everyone becomes a suspect even the woman who has declared her love for him.

Mark is the male version of many of the female heroine’s in romance novels. He is so disillusioned and heartbroken that he sabotages every attempt at happiness; he willingly hurts Nicki at every opportunity using emotional cuts and bruises. He is the epitome of bi-polar personality both in and out of the bedroom. And in this, he is a difficult character to like. He is making love one moment and then his mind begins to wander and he pulls away and runs. I don’t know anyone who would be able to accept his actions on an ongoing basis.

Nicki is a woman who is oblivious to her predicament. She is partnered with a mafia-connected uncle and she willingly allows employees and co-workers access to her computer information. In this, she is definitely heading for trouble.

The world building continues from Bound and Determined. Rafe and Kerry return for a few cameos and their lives are about to be turned upside down as well. But there are also many similarities between the first two storylines including premise and plot scenarios and conversation stylings.

Mark needs to make amends to the woman with whom he has fallen in love, but he cannot stop the accusations and feelings of betrayal. Right up until the end of the storyline our hero pushes Nicki away until it is too late for both. If Mark cannot get past the betrayal, he will lose the woman and his heart.

MINE TO HOLD (Wicked Lovers #6) by Shayla Black

Mine to HoldABOUT THE BOOK: re-release September 13, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

A friend’s duty.

Tyler Murphy was an LAPD detective, single and happy—until a near-fatal tragedy crippled his friend, fellow detective Eric Catalano. While Tyler supported Eric, he also became a shoulder for Eric’s wife, Delaney, to lean on. But with one naughty suggestion from Eric, a drunken night with Delaney spilled into erotic abandon. Before it was over, Tyler saw his best friend’s wife as a woman and yearned for more. When Eric struggled to deal with the aftermath, Delaney begged Tyler to leave. Crushed, he fled to Louisiana, hoping to escape his longing for the one woman he could never have againand unaware of what he’d left behind.

A lover’s desire.

After two years of living with regret, Tyler finds Delaney on his doorstep, her husband having abandoned her long ago. She’s protecting a shocking secret and desperately needs refuge from a stalker determined to see her dead. As they fight to stay alive and catch the killer, they struggle to resolve the guilt of their past pleasures. But they can’t deny that what was once a spark is now a flame burning out of control. To possess Delaney—body and soul—Tyler must heal her pain and thwart the evil that’s a mere breath behind her

MATURE AUDIENCE

REVIEW: MINE TO HOLD is the latest re-release from author Shayla Black and the sixth instalment in her Wicked Lovers series. The series focuses on a group of former marines, special ops, former police and military men and the women they love. This is Tyler and Delaney’s story-a story of second chances and broken hearts. Although the storyline is part of a series, it can be read without too much difficulty as the author references many of the former plotlines and in doing so, we become familiar with the many couples that were previously introduced in the series.

The storyline is written in present day with flashbacks to Memorial Day weekend two years earlier where Tyler and Delaney’s life changed forever. Delaney was married to Tyler’s friend and fellow officer but a stake out that went horribly wrong found Eric in a wheel chair with a request of his best friend and wife. Fast forward two years later, Del and Eric are now divorced and she is on the run for her life. As a journalist, Delaney had uncovered some dangerous information and her life had been threatened on more than one occasion. Running to Tyler was her only option because there was more to the story than anyone could have known.

The relationship between Tyler and Delaney began as friends but they were ‘forced’ into lovers at the request of Delaney’s husband. To be honest, you knew nothing good was going to come of the situation, and true to form, Delaney’s husband pushed too far and soon realized his best friend and wife were in love. It would be two years before Delaney ever saw Tyler again and in that two years, many things and people had changed.

The characters are colorful as is their history together including Tyler’s history with many other women and with the friends who would help save Delaney’s life. The mix up of personalities and back stories is humorous and heartbreaking, but in the end, everyone knows that Tyler has been in love with Delaney for a long time. But before anything else, Tyler needs to let Delaney know that no matter what has happened in the past, she is the only woman that has been on his mind. (insert eye roll here).

The world building is fluid as Shayla brings together friends and family and previous storyline scenarios so that the focus of Mine to Hold flows smoothly.

Mine To Hold is a story of action and suspense; heartbreak and betrayal; love and hate; regret and indecision. But in the end, there is a happily ever after, but not before too many lives are destroyed and a history between three people that had gone terribly wrong.

NOTE: Mine to Hold is not recommended for anyone under 18. There are some sexually graphic situations that are not be suitable for all ages.

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Jamie Farrell as our guest today.

Jamie is here today to discuss her new book, Southern Fried Blues, which is  the 1st book in her The Officers’ Ex-Wives Club series.

Let’s meet Jamie!

Interview-RED

TRC: Hi Jamie, welcome to The Reading Café. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Jamie: I’m excited to be here! Thank you for having me!

TRC: Please tell us about yourself

Jamie: I’m a military wife and stay-at-home mom to three kids. I speak three languages—English, Pirate, and Two-Year-Old—and I have trained my husband to fold laundry. I’m perpetually eight pounds over my Weight Watchers goal, I make my own yogurt, and I’ve recently asked my friend Maria Geraci to be my pop culture godmother, since I’m woefully ignorant of the latest hot movies, TV shows, and celebrities.

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Jamie: I got married right out of college, and when my husband got his first military orders, I was completely unprepared for how our lives would change. Nothing went horribly wrong, but I hadn’t yet learned the ins and outs of military life, I missed home, and I couldn’t find a job to use my shiny engineering degree. So I turned to writing fiction as a way of coping. When my husband discovered what I’d been doing during my frequent nights of insomnia, he pushed me to join Romance Writers of America, and now, *mumble mumble* years later, I’m doing what I love as a career.

TRC: Can you please tell us the premise of Southern Fried Blues, and how you came up with the idea?  Is this book a standalone, or are you planning on making this a series?

Jamie:  Southern Fried Blues is about a redneck rocket scientist halfway through his military career and a divorced Yankee lady stranded in the South who has vowed to never again let another military man’s career derail her own.

As you might’ve guessed, the inspiration for Southern Fried Blues partially came from real life, since my engineering career evaporated after the military started moving us around. My marriage is fine (and it amuses my husband to no end every time he hears me say this), but there are a few strong reasons why a professional career woman wouldn’t want to marry the military. So Anna, the heroine in Southern Fried Blues, was born. When I put some thought into what kind of man I should give an independent, career-minded, never-marrying-the-military-again kind of woman, Southern gentleman Jackson strolled into my head, dressed in military blues and drawling something about somebody’s biscuits. These two were so much fun to write about, and I hope my readers have as much fun with them as I did.

Southern Fried Blues stands alone, but I have plans to return to the Officers’ Ex-Wives Club after I’ve finished my new series. There will be some cross-over between the two series.

TRC: You have a series coming next year, Misfit Brides of Bliss.  Can you please give us a brief description of the premise of this series?  How many books are you planning on this series?

Southern Fried BluesJamie: The Misfit Brides of Bliss is about three women—a divorced single mother, a divorce lawyer, and a lovably quirky wedding cake baker—who stumble into love despite not fitting the norms of their hometown of Bliss, Illinois. Bliss is the self-proclaimed Most Married-est Town on Earth. It’s also the premiere wedding destination of the Midwest. Every summer, Bliss hosts a Knot Festival where the pinnacle event is the Husband Games. (Think husband Olympics, with events such as fastest tire changer and best lawn mower.) I have three books planned that are actively in the works, and ideas for more if readers love it as much as I do. I am having an absolute ball writing this series.

Amazon  |  Barnes & Noble |  Kobo

TRC: Your first book in this series is The Husband Games.  When do you anticipate the release date and can you please tell us briefly about this book?

Jamie: The Husband Games is Natalie and CJ’s story. It’s scheduled for release in the spring of 2014.

The idea for this book came from a conversation I had with a friend, who was complaining about her husband. I was nodding along, thinking I was glad I was married to my husband and not hers, when the idea for husband Olympics struck me. I don’t think my friend quite followed my logic when I blurted out, “My husband can bench press more than yours can!” but she’s known me long enough to just go with it. Once I had the setting for the games—Bliss, the most married-est town on Earth—my heroine, Natalie, a divorced single mother, instantly clicked. Her hero, CJ, comes from a big family, and it shows in his personality. CJ is a former Husband of the Year, and he’s still coping with his first wife’s death while in the line of military duty.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Jamie: I’m doing content edits on The Husband Games, along with a dirty first draft of The Wedding Games, which is book three. Book two, The Bride Games, about a divorce lawyer and a country music star, is awaiting my first revision before going out to my critique partners.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you have a favorite place or time you like to write?

Jamie: Usually I write a messy first draft, then I go through the story for heavy revisions before sending it to my fabulous critique partners, Kelsey Browning and Maria Geraci. Once they’ve weighed in, I do another round of heavy revisions on the story, then I do a few passes to get nit-picky about specific wording, clichés, making sure the writing is tight, and so on. I let it sit for a week or two, look at it with fresh eyes one last time, then send it off to my editor. I don’t write fast, but I make every effort to ensure my books are the highest quality they can be.

My favorite time and place to write is anytime and anywhere my family will let me. With three little ones underfoot, I take what I can get.

TRC: What are the challenges or difficulties that you found in your writing career?

Jamie: Other than the hubby getting orders for us to move and the normal challenges of finding writing time while being a stay-at-home-mom, my biggest challenge has been in trusting myself, both with the actual writing and with the direction I needed to steer my career.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jamie: Thank you so much for having me today!
