FUNNY BUSINESS by Desmond X. Torres

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 25, 2013

Artie’s a cop. He’s been carrying a torch for Marie since she first repaired his car at Smitty’s garage. Too bad she hates cops. You could write a novel about it. Actually, Artie did. He even published it online. It’s a little cheesy, but his pen name Desiree Robb is developing a fan base.

Out of the blue, the book takes off, igniting an avalanche of sales. Desiree Robb is approached by a major publisher- they’re offering millions!

But Desiree has to show her pretty face for promotions. Guess who Artie asks to be Desiree’s pretty face?

Marie signs on- for a price. It’s easy money, but things get complicated. Artie’s driving her batty. Or is there something more? During preparations for a live TV broadcast, romance tentatively begins.

More complications ensue. The mob gets involved. These guys mean business- so what if they still live with their parents? Then there’s the hot for cops VP, a popular talk show, and the FBI. It all fuses into a laugh out loud cluster chaos as tangled as a New York City rush hour!

REVIEW: FUNNY BUSINE$$ is a contemporary romance and sometimes humorous look at the world of online publishing and the funny business behind the scenes of authors, pen names and hidden identities.

Police officer Artie Dunleavy has written a book-a romance novel-based loosely on his life and the woman with whom he has had a crush on for over two years. Overnight the ebook becomes a million-copy seller and suddenly Artie needs to find a ‘sock puppet’ to represent his alter ego/pen name Desiree Robb. Enter Marie-his auto mechanic and long time crush.

The storyline follows a disaster in the making. Artie contracts Marie to be his ‘public face’ but will soon discover that they both are in over their heads. Between the publishers, PR relations, con artists and the Russian mob our couple is in for the ride of their lives. The relationship between Artie and Marie is definitely a work in progress and one that spirals in and out of control throughout the entire storyline.

FUNNY BUSINE$$ is an interesting look at the business of online publishing and will definitely make you wonder if any of the behind the scenes shoving is really what it is all about. The writing is simple. There is no graphic language; no sex; no violence and only a little bit of romance.

Gareth/Andrew (The Lonely Lords #6 and #7) by Grace Burrowes-a review

Lonely Lords

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Well it’s official! I have decided that I want Grace Burrowes to find me my own Lonely Lord so I can hug him and squeeze him and maybe call him George. LOL Seriously, this author can write one amazing leading man that leaves my heart aching and my tummy flipping. So yup .. that means I was not only satisfied with book 6 (Gareth) and book 7 (Andrew) of her Lonely Lords series, but was completely smitten and once again taken in and swept away in their own personal love story!

GUSH GUSH GUSH … let’s meet them shall we???

GARETH – Lord of Rakes
book 6 of The Lonely Lords Series
Release Date: November 5, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

GarethDESCRIPTION

She’s caught between a rake and certain ruin…

Felicity Worthington’s only hope of avoiding poverty—or worse—is to accept her distant cousin’s dubious bequest…a thriving, high-class brothel. Felicity has 90 days to convince her cousin’s solicitors that Gareth Alexander has taught her the art of pleasing a man, though she’s more interested in the gentleman she glimpses beneath Gareth’s debauched airs, than in the rake he’s become.

In the business of love…How much should he teach her?

Gareth Alexander, Marquis of Heathgate, has little incentive to help a spinster learn to manage a brothel—except that the alternatives for the prim, pretty Miss Worthington are even worse. His resistance to teaching Felicity how to be a madam leaves Gareth wondering if the honor he’d thought long dead still survives, and if that honor allows him to yield to the lady’s ruinous scheme…and to their shared desires.

REVIEW

UH OH!!!!!! I think I have a new fave! Sorry Darius, Nicholas, Ethan, Beckman and Gabriel .. but Gareth has arrived! Oh Gareth .. I want to clone your sorry delicious self!

So Gareth is absolutely new to this series (meaning there was no previous mention of him in any of the first 5 books) so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well you already know I wasn’t disappointed, so let’s move on to why! Gareth is the Marquis of Heathgate, he is also a bit of a man whore, taking pleasure as he wishes while performing his dreaded titled tasks. I got the impression he is bored with his life. He is very handsome, titled, and a coveted match for many young ladies. Well his whole world is about to be rocked when Felicity Worthington requests a meeting in his parlor.

Felicity is hardly making ends meet. She is a resigned spinster who has taken on the family responsibility of her younger sister (her sister still has the chance for a good match). No matter what it takes, Felicity is willing to take any chance to improve their station in life. When she is called upon by her barristers, she is told she is to inherit a brothel and must become the madame in order to claim the financial perks. The will explains that she must have Gareth teach her all .. which includes not only savvy business manners, but the pleasures of the flesh.

No longer bored, Gareth embarks on teaching Felicity all he can and at first goes about it quite business like! Felicity is different from other woman however and before he knows it, a game of cat and mouse has begun and he is uncertain if he is the cat or the mouse. Regardless, these two become quite close in emotion as well as in body and with the side of danger that is lurking, they ride one crazy roller coaster. I fell in absolute love with both of them and reveled in their angst and cheered their joy.

ANDREW – Lord of Despair
Book 7 of the Lonely Lords Series
Release Date: December 5, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

AndrewDESCRIPTION

Andrew Alexander, Earl of Greymoor, has tried to run both from memories of a boating tragedy that claimed the lives of several loved ones, and from an attraction to pretty, petite, Astrid Worthington. He returns to England to find Astrid widowed, expecting a child, and more irresistibly attractive to him than ever. When it becomes apparent that Astrid needs a husband who can keep her and her unborn child safe, Andrew must decide if old nightmares will continue to control his life, or if his love for Astrid entitles him to a second chance at happiness—and love.

REVIEW

WOW .. the Lord of Despair! NO KIDDING! We met Andrew in Gareth’s book as he is Gareth’s younger brother. Andrew was in one heck of a traumatic accident (that Gareth feels responsible for) when he was younger and he never has quite learned to deal and get over it. He closes himself off and goes inside his internal protective bubble all the while hiding the pain from those he loves. Andrew met Astrid (who just so happens to be Felicity’s sister) in Gareth’s book, and feels a personal protective instinct towards her. She seems to bring out his kind and caring side.

Four years have passed from Gareth’s to Andrew’s books and we learn that Astrid is now widowed only after two years of marriage. Andrew has been travelling for the past four years and decides it is time to come home. When he sees Astrid again, not only do all his feelings surface, but he is blown away by the distinguished lady before him, whom was always just a immature, silly outspoken young girl in his eyes. Marriage was boring to Astrid and consisted of no passion at all and has also left her with child.

The strong friendship that had formed between Andrew and Astrid in the past not only comes forth, but a bond like no other is created. They revel in each other’s company, give in to their passion, fall completely in love and ultimately deny each other the long term commitment they both deserve. When danger promises to bring peril, Andrew must fave his demons and decide whether protecting Astrid is worth throwing away all his rules and beliefs.

I tell you, Grace Burrowes can write a mean romance (the fact that she writes my fave genre doesn’t hurt either .. WINK). I do not reread books all that often but this series is on my “to read again” pile. What seems effortless, she is so talented at pulling heartstrings and providing believable stories with believable characters. All her leading men know how to protect and love, nurture, break hearts, flirt, and consume their chosen woman with so much desire you wonder how they can possibly deny the forming relationships.

Thank you once again Grace Burrowes for another reason to gush over your work. I love that you set the stage for the next two Lonley Lords and you can rest assured I am anxious to read and review them! 🙂

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Wilde For Her by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde For Her by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Wilde For HerLinks to order Wilde for Her: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
Former homicide detective Camden Wilde has been in love with his ex-partner, Eva Cardoso, for longer than he cares to admit. Not that it matters. She’s shoved him into the friend zone, and after living through the hell of his parents’ violent deaths, Cam’s unable to give her the idyllic life she secretly desires.

Eva’s never met a person who hasn’t let her down. Cam may be sex personified, but he’s the only man she can trust, and there’s no way she’ll risk their friendship on the off-chance they could be more. Especially not after the one scintillating night she’s trying—and failing—to forget.

When a murder-for-hire contract on his head lands Eva on his doorstep, Cam knows it’s time to put up or shut up. He’s done biding his time, and he’ll be damned if he lets the delectable detective ignore what’s between them, no matter the cost.

Review:

Wait.  What was he thinking?  This kiss was a ruse.  It wasn’t real.  He was simply doing her a favor, being a good friend by helping her make her ex jealous to soothe her wounded pride.

Fuck, he really hated being stuck in the friend category.

Seems Wilde Security can handle a variety of matters — P.I. work is just their bread and butter.  Problem is this isn’t a job.  When Cam’s date/ex-partner/BFF, Eva, faces her cheater-ex (and his fiancé), Cam rushes in to assume the guise of lover and spare her embarrassment.  Bigger problem?  Cam’s genuinely in love with Eva and he can no longer deny it.  Fingers crossed hard-ass, and unapologetic, Eva feels the same way.  That kiss sure felt real!

We all know how temperamental we can be about sequels (imagine the stress of writing one!), but I was [beyond] eager to read about the second Wilde brother based on the wonderful family created by author, Tonya Burrows (debut novel, Wilde Nights in Paradise, can be read here).  Get ready to swoon for Cam in Wilde for Her

While I can devote an endless amount of time on Cam and Eva alone, we explore their background, make sense of their insecurities, and squirm (a lot) over misunderstandings, Ms. Burrows provides interesting subplots including a terrific thriller.  It still revolves around Cam, though, lol.  After a clandestine meeting with a loyal, but troubled informant, Cam discovers there’s a contract on his head.  “Some white dude.  Mean.  Nice clothes.”  has offered $1,000 to kill Cam.  Are you thinking what I am?  Clear your mind…he’s just one on Cam’s “long and varied” list of suspects.

The brother bond is deftly handled.  Suffering from their parents’ abrupt death, each Wilde sibling went into a different branch of the military and Ms. Burrows allows each story to unravel, unhurried, at its own pace.  The Wildes can fist-fight without hard feelings, open up through “cool bro talk”, but Burrows’ measured steps/writing, endear us to the family and keep us aware of particular torments unique to each brother.  PTSD is a recurring theme for this series and her research is an invaluable service to anyone close to the issue.

If I’m being critical, the hit on Cam, or rather its resolution, may have wrapped up too neatly, and co-workers falling in love isn’t exactly innovative, but when written earnestly, thoughtfully, like Ms. Burrows continues to demonstrate, it matters not.  This is not a cookie-cutter version of something you’ve already read.  Ms. Burrows creates characters that you want in your circle of friends (and certainly in a fight!).  She utilizes a subtle touch in an effort to gain sympathy for both Cam and Eva.  Before long, their “baggage” (we ALL have it) becomes personal and relatable to anyone who’s persevered and endured the highs and lows of falling in love.  Yes, many swoooon moments to linger in your system.  😉

I enjoyed Wilde for Her immensely and will read anything written by Ms. Burrows.  If my instincts are honed (I should work for Wilde Security!), then the fortuitous run-ins with a suddenly available woman should bring Vaughn Wilde front and center.  And since he seems to be the more stoic of the bunch, consider this my pre-swoon.  That book cannot come out soon enough.  Great read, Ms. Burrows!!!

SURRENDER TO ME (I Surrender #2) by Monica James

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 21, 2013

Ava Thompson left the love of her life, Jasper White, to unearth her destiny. Even though the decision was the toughest of her life, it was the only way for Ava to grow into the woman she’s always wanted to become.

Sadly, that destiny has led her back to the place that broke her.

Singapore.

And more importantly, it has led her back to the man who broke her.

Harper.

But Ava is no longer the scared, lost girl she once was. Ava is stronger, and she will not allow her past, taint her future.

Six months later, Ava travels back to Los Angeles for an event that embraces the true meaning of love. Sadly for Ava, her meaning of true love has been lost.

And that’s because of one life changing event that has altered her life forever.

Los Angeles is not how Ava left it. Things have changed. People have changed. She has changed. But what has remained untouched is her passionate love for Jasper White.

But does Jasper feel the same?

REVIEW: SURRENDER TO ME is the second storyline in Monica James’s contemporary, new adult romance series focusing on Ava Thompson and Jasper White. This instalment commences approximately four months following the end of I Surrender when Ava returns to the United States to stand up in her best friend’s wedding.

In the intervening four months the storyline changes dramatically. When we last left Ava and Jasper, they had pledged their undying love for one another as Ava departed for a scholarship program at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in Singapore-the same place where he ex boyfriend Harper still resides. Of course, you can see the problems approaching now that Harper and Ava are going to be in close proximity to one another.

The relationship between Ava and Jasper has fallen apart due in part to a piece of information that the reader is not privy to throughout most of the building story and when Ava returns to America with her ex-boyfriend in tow, things go from bad to worse with every encounter between our leading couple. And to complicate matters, Ava keeps the truth about her relationship with Harper a secret-one that even her BFF Veronica is not aware. Harper and Ava are back together as a couple and the reasons Ava keeps close to her heart.

The reader is pulled into another storyline of emotional ups and downs especially when Jasper is unable to stay angry with Ava for very long. His need and love for Ava has barely survived their separation and is clearly spiraling out of control as the storyline progresses. Jasper and Ava’s connection can be felt to the deepest part of their soul: their love for one another is both heartbreaking and sad because of the elephant in the room-what went wrong and why? The relationship issues needed to be resolved before anyone would get their HEA.

Harper (Ava’s ex) plays a more active role in Surrender to Me-one that will place Jasper and Ava in a difficult situation. He is an enigma and a man with an obvious plan. Although his part was predictable from a reader’s POV, I kept wondering why Ava hadn’t clued in to Jasper’s late night behavior and obvious avoidance of his girlfriend.

The world building and especially the character development continues from I Surrender. Monica delves deeper into Jasper and Harper’s personalities including Harper’s need for Ava and why. The storyline covers a few days in the life before the wedding and concludes with a surprising pronouncement a few weeks later.

SURRENDER TO ME is a passionate storyline about two people so much in love with another but two people who have a difficult time revealing the truth behind the continuous misunderstandings and thoughts of betrayal. It is a story where the heart knows what it wants before the mind has had a chance to see the entire picture.

I SURRENDER (I Surrender #1)
by Monica James
Release Date: July 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk

I SurrenderSingapore has stolen a piece of Ava Thompson.

It took one life shattering moment, for her to realize, her EX is not the man she believed him to be. Returning home to Los Angeles was never going to be easy for Ava. Her heart has been shattered to smithereens and she’s convinced it’ll never heal. Or, so she thought.

Enter Jasper White.

Unbeknown to Ava, Jasper White will change her life forever.

The attraction is instantaneous which troubles Ava, who has sworn off men indefinitely. But, she is finding resisting Jasper, with his tousled bedroom hair and piercing cerulean eyes, harder than she ever imagined. And that’s because Jasper knows what he wants, and he wants Ava.

But, can Ava surrender to her feelings for the one man who compels her to love again? Because, what happens if love does not triumph all? What happens if love isn’t enough?

I SURRENDER is the first storyline in Monica James’s contemporary, new adult romance series focusing on Ava Thompson and rock god/guitarist Jasper White. Ava is broken-her boyfriend of four years announced that he doesn’t love her and wants a clean break. Believing that nothing or no one will ever mend her shredded heart, Ava will meet Jasper White-the man to whom she is drawn both body and soul. What ensues is a roller coaster of betrayal, jealousy, anger and hurtful words that will destroy the fragile repairs to each other’s hearts.

The storyline premise will see Ava and Jasper building a relationship – one of friends to enemies to friends to lovers to enemies to friends and back again. Yes, there it is. The proverbial roller coaster of misunderstanding, painful realizations, heartbreaking accusations and falling in love. As Ava and Jasper dance around each other both continue to ignore the elephant in the room-their exes who still have some sort of hold on their lives.

The reader is pulled into a story about one woman’s inability to move on and one man’s inability to forget about the painful childhood and the parents who cared for nothing but the next drink or getting high. Jasper believes himself unworthy of Ava’s love and Ava continues to prove him right when she is unwilling to admit that she loves the man who has stolen her heart.

The storyline is both emotionally draining and frustrating as we watch Ava destroy the relationship and the man because of her painful past. The couple push and pull at one another’s emotional fragility until there will come a point when hurtful words are daggers to the heart.

There is a colorful cast of secondary characters including Ava’s best friend V and Jasper’s band mate Lucas as well as Jasper’s evil, spiteful ex who continues to make Ava’s life miserable at every opportunity. Ava and Jasper push each other over and over, until finally, both will break under the pressure. This is a story about two people so drawn to one another but the walls that surround their hearts is so thick, it will take a separation to begin the long process of breaking down and giving in.

If you are a fan of angst driven, heartbreaking storylines where an uneasy declaration of love is threatened by yet another perfectly timed separation and threat, then I SURRENDER by Monica James is the read for you. It has all the elements of the new adult storylines: betrayal; secrets; painful past; sorrow; spiteful exes; and misunderstandings. And it also has a HEA for now because Ava has chosen to finish her goal of becoming a gourmet chef and it will bring her face to face with the man who broke her heart and sent her away.

Surrender to Me by Monica James

“Do you like me more now?”

At the moment, I am trying to stop myself from liking him too much. But I’m pretty certain I am way too late, as the like ship, set sail a long time ago, and now I am faced with an endless sea of pure wanton need.

“Jasper…” I pause, unsure of what I want to say. “Let me take you home,” I finish off.

Jasper shakes his head, pulling me towards him so we are chest to chest.

“Answer my question first.”

His alcohol laced breath is fanning my cheeks, and for some reason, it is a total turn on. My hormones begin a striptease, hoping I listen to them and give in to my needs.

“Yes,” I reply simply, because it’s the truth.

Jasper leans forward, hovering over my mouth. “How much?”

I hold onto my breath, afraid if I breathe the wrong way, I might do something I know I shouldn’t.

“This much,” I say breathlessly, while stretching my thumb and forefinger as far as they will extend.

Jasper tongues his top lip. “Good. Okay, now let’s go home,” he says while pulling back with a smug look on his face, as he knows he has caused me to go weak at the knees.

Home.

How I wish his home was mine.

In The BloodLinks to order In The Blood:  Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
For seventeen years Jed Franklin’s life was normal. Then his father was charged with the abuse and murder of four young boys and normal became a nightmare.

His mom’s practically a walking zombie, he’s lost most of his friends, and the press camps out on his lawn. The only things that keep him sane are his little sis; his best friend and dream girl, Summer; and the alcohol he stashes in his room. But after Jed wakes up from a total blackout to discover a local kid has gone missing—a kid he was last seen talking to—he’s forced to face his greatest fear: that he could somehow be responsible.

In a life that’s spiraled out of control, Jed must decide if he chooses his own destiny with Summer by his side or if the violent urges that plagued his father are truly in the blood

Review:

In the Blood by Sara Hantz is a different kind of YA novel. When I decided to read this book, I did not anticipate that this would become a difficult and hard book to read.  The subject matter was very depressing, and I found myself at times struggling to continue.  Sara Hantz is new to me, and I found that she is a very good writer, good enough to make me feel this strong about the story.

Jed, our 17 year old hero, is in a bad place.  His father, whom he idolized, is ready to go on trial for being a pedophile, having abused and murdered young boys.  Jed’s life as he knew it is over, as everyone..friends, neighbors, school kids all look at him like the plague.  With his mother in a deep depression, Jed relied on his friend, Summer, who treated him normally, always being there for him; and his little sister, Amy, who is too young to understand what is really going on.

It is a normal way of life to feel sympathy for all the victims and their families, which is rightfully so.  But unfortunately, the families of the accused, also suffer badly. Neither Jed or his mom had any idea that their father/husband was a sick individual with a horrible secret life.  We see through Jed’s eyes, as he comes to terms with the fact that his father is guilty, and his mother is falling apart.  But what I hated about this story was watching as he suffers through doubts about himself, and the terrible treatment he receives from others. His classmates, especially one, would taunt him and treat him like he was the offender.  Everything that happens in the neighborhood, or at school;  all eyes look to blame Jed.  Even the police would either be suspicious of Jed, or ask him to help them get more info from his father.  Some of the things that happen at school, with Jed being falsely accused, left a bad taste in my mouth.  It was a hard and at times unpleasant book to read.

The subject is a fair subject, because in most cases those families are also the victims; mainly due to everyone turning on them, and blaming them for things they did not have control over.  It is easy to say “you should have seen this”.   Not true if the perpetrator was good or sick enough to hide from their family.  But again I found this to be a dark read, filled with despair and distaste. At the same time, I felt Sara Hantz’s writing was very well done.

Review:

Bound by Wish and Mistletoe is a holiday novella in Kat Bastion‘s Highland Legends series.  This is a great Christmas story, wrapped up in the magic of Castle Brodie and the enchanting sparkle of Christmas celebrations.  Susanna MacEalan is on the run, running from an abusive father who has promised her in marriage to a ruthless man.  Susanna has been taught all her life that men are not to be trusted because all they do is hurt women.  She vowed to her mother that she would get away and she is making good on that promise.
Susanna runs right into the arms of Robert Brodie.  Robert had sworn off women, he was sick of the shallow women that constantly pursued him.  But when he met Susanna, his manly world was turned upside down.  He knew she was not like the other women and he wanted to claim her for his own.  Susanna is terrified to trust anyone within Robert’s clan.  The only person she trusted growing up was her mom.  Once she is introduced to everyone, she is blown away by the kindness she receives.  She didn’t know what a real family was like and Robert wants to show her.  But he has to prove to her that he can be trusted and that he won’t turn into a horrible, abusive man.

This novella moves along quickly, never a dull moment.  That’s what I love about Kat’s writing, there is never any pages that I want to speed read through because it’s boring.  She writes her characters with such emotion that they come to life.  I really enjoyed Robert and Susanna’s love story, the passion jumped off the pages.  Bound by Wish and Mistletoe was the perfect blend of Christmas magic, romance and the real meaning of family.  What a great second edition to Kat’s introduction to the Highlanders, Forged in Dreams and Magick
