PERFECT LIE by Teresa Mummert

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 17 2013

Sometimes love burns so hot in your veins that it consumes all rational thought.

That’s why Brock and I never had a chance. I had to start my life over. College was my chance to become someone new. I changed everything about myself to fit in, but one person saw through my facade.

The attraction between Abel and I was undeniable, but I still hadn’t healed from the painful secret I carried around with me. Abel struggled to get me to face my past in order to move forward. In doing so, he revealed a secret of his own; one that changed everything I thought I knew.

A secret that would bring Brock back into my life and force me to face the truth of what really happened the day I lost him.

REVIEW: PERFECT LIE is the latest release from author Teresa Mummert and takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions with a surprise twist that you will never see coming.

Delilah (Lie) is a young woman whose only means of escape from a horrific childhood and family was to run away. From grade school to high school, group homes to college, Lie has been the butt of bullying and teasing resulting in an even lower sense of self esteem until the day she meets Brock who loves Lie for everything that she is. Brock is no longer a part of her current life and it will take another young man to show Lie what exactly she needs to do to move on.

As the storyline progresses, the history between Brock and Delilah is revealed in flashbacks, memories and counseling sessions. The information is slow to reveal as the story builds but in the end the reader will tumble down the rabbit hole with Alice and end up in Wonderland seeing the story unfold through the looking glass.

Teresa Mummert has written a fascinating and thought provoking storyline that will break your heart when Delilah’s sense of self worth is nothing more than dirt beneath her feet. You will be pulled into the pain and sorrow of one woman who is unable to move forward or let go of the past-thus keeping her heart and soul from moving on. It is only when Abel reveals the truth will Delilah be able to heal both her heart and her mind-Teresa Mummert will make you think about everything you thought you knew-both current and in the future.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date: December 27, 2013

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.

Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Brava, YAY and Woot!!! Those were my first reactions when I read TRINKETS, TREASURES, AND OTHER BLOODY MAGIC by Meghan Ciana Doidge. Let’s just call it Trinkets for short! You remember that I loved Cupcakes (Book One) in the Dowser series and this addition was another great read. I think that I have a girl crush on author Meghan. She has developed such great characters! Let’s review some of them.

First, there is Desmond aka “McGrowly”, shape shifter and Alpha of the Northwestern Pack. Did I mention that he is uber-sexy too? Second is Kett, the Ancient Vampire that most of our gang doesn’t trust, but I found his sardonic wit and presence highly entertaining. Then there is Kandy, our fierce green haired, werewolf bodyguard for our main heroine! Last but not least, Jade our “half-witch” dowser who is such a fun gal. Baking cupcakes, eating chocolate and yoga help her deal with her new found powers and the death of her evil foster sister. Getting inside that character’s head must have been interesting. She is so quirky and adorable! Plus, there are descriptions of some yummy cupcake flavors! Fruit enhanced flavors are the theme for this book! There are some great new characters too, including a “fledgling” Necromancer, and we learn more about Scarlett, Jade’s mother. We still don’t know what magical being sired Jade and the gang wants to figure it out!

The story starts with Kett and Kandy testing Jade’s abilities in the wilderness near Whistler Mountain. The readers are introduced to “Skinwalkers” which are Native Americans who can take the shape of their token animals. It’s an exciting beginning, but we don’t get to see them again. I have a feeling that they will show up in the next book! YAY!!

The main storyline involves a powerful sorcerer who wants to meet Jade. His name is Mot Blackwell, what a great name! He is known for his treasures and Kett thinks that a trip to Portland Oregon to meet him would be a good idea. Why is Mot trying to lure Jade to Oregon? I have to keep this spoiler free, but this part is action packed and a sinister character is back and wants revenge. There is more story building in this novel, a great action packed adventure and a possible hot and heavy “make out” session. You will have to figure out who kisses whom! I’m not telling, but they are scorching!

This book ends with an amazing cliffhanger and an answer to one question, but all I can say is: WHY? WHY? Meghan how can you leave me like this….??? I hope that you readers enjoy this latest addition to this fun series!

Wild Card by Jamie Wyman – a Review

Wild Card by Jamie Wyman – a Review

Wild CardLink to order Wild Card: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
It was bad enough that gods gambled with human souls, but Catherine Sharp’s soul just had to be won by the Greek goddess of Discord, Eris. As if working a dead-end tech support job didn’t suck the life out of her as it was. Now, Cat finds herself performing random tasks for the goddess in her free time.

But when Coyote, the Native American trickster himself, claims to have won her own soul in Mayhem’s weekly poker game, Cat wants in on the action. With five sneaky gods upping the ante, Cat needs to find a way to collect the winning chips that could save her soul.
Marius, a handsome yet irritating satyr with his own debt to Eris, might finally come in handy for something. If they play their cards right and work together, Cat and Marius may just get their freedom back. If they don’t kill each other—or fall in love—first.

Review:

What’s better than a Las Vegas setting?  Hitting Sin City with this gal by your side!  In an unusual (but eventually explained circumstance), Catherine is allowed into the world of the immortals.  It seems she bargained with Eris, the goddess of strife, and lost her soul in the negotiations.  Wild Card by Jamie Wyman bets on Cat (couldn’t resist!) to attend a huge bash at Caesar’s Palace summoned by the deity herself.  If Cat cooperates, her servitude may be terminated.  How can she pass it up?  She hates to be entangled in their affairs as it is.  Ok…so Cat complies, but what does she do upon arrival?  What exactly is she supposed to do at this gala where her human biology will not go undetected?  What exactly is this deal that allowed Cat’s path to even cross with Eris?  And more importantly, can Eris be trusted?

“Listen closely, Cat, for this is all the aid I will give you.  There are four others in the game.  Each of them has a token.  Procure these, bring them to me, and you may get the freedom you desire…Follow your instincts, call in favors, break a few laws…I don’t care how you do it, but if you want your soul back, you will get the tokens.”

Oh, I’ll tell you what aid Eris provides:  Discord of course!  Seems the ancient goddess lost Cat’s soul in a poker game and has lined up Cat, the poor victim, to retrieve tokens from the other 4 players of the game:  Coyote, Maui, Puck and Loki.  Poor Cat has to be subjected to lascivious offers, harassed and hunted by magical creatures that are desperate to win her soul, and this is just a collection of “IOUs”; they’re “all in” for Cat’s soul (you know it’s clever!)  All of this work without certainty of freedom.  One set of jailers for another.  Are you wondering what I am?

“…I can’t understand what’s so special about your soul that all of these gods are willing to take it, let alone fight for it tooth and claw.”

Enter the love interest.  Wyman introduces us to Marius the satyr, personal assistant to Eris (though seemingly disgruntled) and Cat’s unlikely consort.  His description would make any girl swoon:  Drop-dead gorgeous with olive colored skin and a British accent.  Marius just came across as overly confident and smarmy to me.  It sounds like he’s willing to help Cat, the situation is just that dire, but I’m still undecided.  Is Wyman setting him up to be Cat’s lover?  Too soon to tell (plus Marius has painful confessions of his own).  Yes, I am reading and reviewing in tandem! J  Cat’s sworn off the otherworldly, so he better start earning her (my) respect.  To complete Cat’s life, in a good way as far as I can tell (man, I’ll be pissed if that backfires!), is Flynn, Cat’s BFF and technomage (synergy with machines and electronics).  He is a tattooed, lanky, red-headed magical being who owns a punk club and is willing to do whatever Cat needs to keep her safe.  I sense a romantic declaration has been trying to surface, but timing is everything and now is not it.  There is a major twist, a few in fact, that surprised me and made me reconsider all the players’ motives.  Some of this book reads like a prequel would have answers to certain unknowns, but Ms. Wyman takes a languid approach to its finale.

Written with a fresh tone, a contemporary hipster humor, and all around enjoyment, Wyman’s writing appealed to me instantly.  Lovers of mythology and the varying pantheons will delight in all the character references.  While love triangles are usually loathsome to me, I can’t exactly classify this as such.  Marius and Flynn are just 2 great guys who are forces in their own right; each contributes to Cat, but there is another who will throw you off (twist, I mentioned it).  52% in and it’s a simmering attraction between Cat and Marius.  It made me crazy, but crazy for more!  A fae encounter (or “mindfuck”), reassess Cat’s state of affairs.  I was in complete disbelief/denial while simultaneously outraged, but it allowed Cat an inner reflection for honest perspective and discourse.

What ensues is a mission to reach the pivotal poker chips and Eris herself.  Jumping through hoops is putting it mildly and Eris is no help whatsoever:

“Gather my trophies.  Claim your reward.”

Trouble is…these other players (and their pawns)?  They’re hardly harmless:  Faeries, Kupua, former lovers, Demigods and deities!  They are quite impressed with Cat’s tenacity and otherness (it’s a word; I looked it up).  Cat has to survive trials and tribulations galore.  Wyman depicts amazing action scenes!  But the unraveling of truths?  WOW.  There’s so much going on…so much for you to love!

Now all you have to do is read this book to find out how it all culminates.  What a terrific read!  Ms. Wyman explores character backgrounds, supplies empowering moments and revelations, seduces and fools us, and ultimately delivers the Wild Card.  A big YAY for having read this book!

Beneath my fingertips, chaos became order.  Take that, Eris!

Catching Up with Sandy Williams

The Sharpest Blade banner 2

SandyWilliams

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Sandy Williams. Sandy is is here today to discuss her new release, The Sharpest Blade, the final book in her Shadow Reader series. Our review of The Sharpest Blade is below this post. Sandy will also tell us what she has in store for us in 2014.

Let’s talk to Sandy.

TRC: Hi, Sandy.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your upcoming new release “The Sharpest Blade”, as well as to give an update as to what you have upcoming in 2014.

TRC: You have just released the 3rd and final book in your Shadow Reader series.  For those who many not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise?

Sandy:  Sure! The Shadow Reader series follows the life of McKenzie Lewis, a human who not only has the ability to see the fae, but she can track them as well. This ability is crucial in the Realm, where fae can fissure (or teleport) from place to place. For ten years, McKenzie used this skill to track the king’s enemies, but in the first book, The Shadow Reader, she was abducted by rebels who were determined to overthrow that king. She’s basically a pawn in the war for control of the Realm, and at times, she resents this, and the way it interferes with her attempt to live a normal human life.

The Sharpest BladeTRC: The Sharpest Blade will be released in a few days, would you please tell us about the book?

Sandy: The Sharpest Blade picks up a few weeks after the events in The Shattered Dark. McKenzie is back in our world and attempting to live a normal life, but she’s constantly thinking about what’s going on in the Realm, and she worries about Kyol and Aren. When she finally does make it back to the other world, she finds that things aren’t better than when she left. Lena might still hold the palace, but a new enemy is gathering strength. McKenzie is determined to help Lena track down this person and bring a real and true peace to the Realm, but the cost of that peace might be more than she can endure.

TRC: How does it feel to have reached the end of this series, as it was your debut series?

Sandy: So many mixed feelings! I’m proud of this series, and I love McKenzie so much. I kind of feel like I’m losing a friend since I’m not currently planning any more books in this world. But I think the ending is satisfying, and I love how everything turns out. I hope readers love it, too!

TRC: I know, as I am one of them, but fans have been having a heated guessing game over who will win McKenzie……Kyol or Aren?  No spoilers here, but how do you feel about creating two heroes, who have developed their own teams?  One will be disappointed.  Though I am prepared for the worst……I am totally Team Aren.

Sandy:  Poor Kyol. He gets so little love.  But it’s awesome that readers love Kyol and Aren so much. I adore both men, and I want them both to be happy. But, of course, I want McKenzie to be happy, too, and the only way for that to happen is for her to settle down with one of them.

TRC:  You write Urban Fantasy romance.  Do you have any desire to write in another genre?

Sandy:  I’m currently working on a science fiction romance, or as I like to call it, an urban fantasy romance set in space.  Everything I write is character driven fiction, and my stories will always have a strong romantic subplot. I’m a huge fan of space – spaceships and aliens and beautiful stars and supernovas. I think it’s an awesome setting and that the stories set in these high-tech, planet hopping societies can have all the elements that normal urban fantasy has. That’s why I’m excited about my current project. But sometime soon, I plan to return to urban fantasy. I have an idea brewing that I can’t wait to write.

TRC: Would you like to share with us what you are currently working on, and what you have in store for us in 2014?

Sandy:  Well, technically, The Sharpest Blade is a January 2014 release.  Unfortunately, I’m not contracted for any more books at this time, but I definitely plan to release something, whether that’s a short set in the Shadow Reader world or a fun side project. I’ll be sure to let you know!

TRC:  Oh please, Sandy, a novella with our favorites, whom we have come to love would be awesome.  🙂

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Sandy:  I just want to say thank you for having me here and for your support of The Shadow Reader novels. No one would have heard of McKenzie’s story if it wasn’t for bloggers and readers like you.

Also, for a limited time, my publisher is running a sale on the first Shadow Reader novel. The ebook is $1.99 from now until January 3rd, so if your readers haven’t had a chance to start this series, now is the perfect and most affordable time. 🙂

TRC:  Trust me, TRC members, this is a great chance to get the book that starts this fabulous series at a reduced price.

Review:
The Sharpest Blade by Sandy Williams is the 3rd and final book in her Shadow Reader series.  I have been on pins and needles all year waiting to see how Sandy Williams was going to end this series, since she had a major twist at the end of the 2nd book, The Shattered Dark.  I have not been this tense and excited to read a book, as I was when I started The Sharpest Blade, and what an exciting and action filled finale this was. I savored every moment, which should tell you how much I enjoyed this series.

If you want a reminder of this series, my two previous reviews can be found under the reviews tab, but for a quick reminder.  MacKenzie is our heroine, and she is a Shadow Reader, who can direct the Fae to where their enemies are, just by reading their shadows.    In this urban fantasy world building of Faes and humans, there is a civil war, with a dictator Fae King, who rules the realm, and the rebels, who want to overturn the king.  In the second book, all three were on the same team, with the rebel leaders having a true descendant to the crown.   Our heroes in this series are Aren, the hot hot hot, rebel leader and Kyol, the also hot, Fae Warrior, both of whom McKenzie cares about.  But in book two, she totally falls in love, as I did, with the wonderfully and devilish, Aren.  Book two ended with a shocking twist.

There is no doubt that The Sharpest Blade gives us a tougher and stronger McKenzie, who is fully in the middle of this civil war.  Though Kyol and Aren are on the same team, to protect Lena, their new Queen, they both dislike each other.  Throughout this exciting story with all trying to save Lena, McKenzie is torn between her love of Aren, and her bond with Kyol.  I will not give any spoilers, but I will say this was a fantastic exciting and intense story.  McKenzie is such a great heroine, and it is her strength, bravery, and perseverance that allows her to save the lives of some of her close allies.  Sandy Williams had us glued to our seats, and didn’t let go until the exciting and climatic ending.  Who does McKenzie end up with?  Will either Kyol or Aren die?  Who wins the war, and does Lena become the Queen?  I’m not telling, go read the book.  🙂

However, I am sad; this series was great, I became so invested into these fantastic characters that Sandy Williams created, that I will miss them dearly. From McKenzie, Aren, Kyol, Lena, Lorn, Paige, and especially Sosch.  I am very sad to not being able to see them again.  I wish Williams did some kind of epilogue telling us more about their future, or maybe Sandy will do a novella.  We can always hope.  Thank you, Sandy Williams for this fantastic ride.

BAYOU NOEL (Bayou Heat Novella 8.5) by Laura Wright

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2013

Tis the season for new beginnings:
Molly has spent her last Christmas alone. After waiting five years for Garrick to notice her as more than his mother’s caregiver. The aggravating male might always have a place in her heart, but she’s determined to find someone who wants to build a family with her. She had no idea that writing a letter of resignation would bring Garrick back to the Wildlands.

It will take a Christmas miracle to bring them together:
Garrick can’t believe that Molly is willing to walk away. She’d not only become irreplaceable to his mother, but he’d become addicted to her letters when he was far away from home. He’d be damned if he was going to let her slip away. But once back in the Wildlands, Garrick is forced to choose between opening his heart to the female he loves or risk losing her forever.

REVIEW: BAYOU NOEL is the latest instalment in the BAYOU HEAT paranormal, romance series written by Laura Wright and Alexandra Ivy. The focus of the series is on a group of panther shifters known as the Pantera and their need to find mates. Without a suitable mate, the Pantera species is dying and with it comes an attack from the outside. But this is a prequel novella-one that focuses on a Pantera Healer –Molly and the Pantera Suit-Garrick. As the holidays draw near, Garrick learns that his mother’s aid and Healer Molly has turned in her resignation following five years of service.

The storyline follows Molly as she is resigned to the fact that the man with whom she has fallen in love refuses to acknowledge her existence. Five years of caring for his mother, Molly believes she has become no more than an indentured servant and wants to find someone who will love her in return.

Garrick is an Alpha male who believes he is not worthy of a mate and family and, ignores the obvious (like many men will do). But when Molly shuts the door for the final time, Garrick knows that the only woman for him is the one who walked away.

BAYOU NOEL is a quick read; an endearing storyline about two people who are perfect for one another but as usual one is oblivious to the heat and attraction. This is a story set several years earlier and spans the globe from Paris to New Orleans. It is a welcome read and one that will make you smile when our couple light a holiday candle to family and a happily ever after.

Unlucky-in-love PR manager Kate Braithwaite doesn’t think her Christmas could get any suckier. Until a trip into work on Christmas Day leaves her snowbound in the Fifth Avenue department store with her boss’s far-too-tempting playboy son Ryder Sinclair. Ryder’s rugged, reckless and none too pleased to be stuck in a place he hates with an uptight workaholic like Kate—but as the night draws on, the lights go out and the temperature rises, until they’re both wondering is this the season to get lucky?

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TIS THE SEASON TO GET LUCKY by Heidi Rice is the latest Christmas novella from Entangled Publishing and it is a quick and fun read for anyone with a few minutes to spare.

The premise follows Kate Braithwaite-whose long distance relationship was brought to an abrupt halt on Christmas morning. Hoping to forget about the holiday, she heads to her office where she is determined not to wallow in her own pity party. But luck would have it when the boss’s son Ryder Sinclair makes an unexpected visit to the store to find something for a special lady in his life. When the two meet, sparks fly and the impending winter storm shuts down the power as well as any plans either may have had for the night.

The storyline finds Kate and Ryder is the unenviable position of ‘playing house’ in the department store overnight. One thing leads to another; their attraction is strong; but in the morning, life goes on and Ryder leaves to meet the other young lady in his life. Kate’s life continues but the memory of that one night remains etched in her heart and in her soul.

TIS THE SEASON TO GET LUCKY is a sweet storyline with a quick relationship buildup and a happily ever after. Because it is a novella, the world and character building are limited but in the end, we learn everything we need to know for Ryder and Kate to fall in love. This is only the beginning of their story and I hope Heidi Rice continues their adventure in a future storyline.
