Elle Edwards grew up believing that because of her mother’s sinful ways she was born without a soul; that’s why she was abandoned and left in the care of Grandmother Myra and Grandfather Prescott, who try to ensure her evil will not infect them;by raising her in a virtual prison. Because her days are occupied with homeschooling, strict religious studies, and vigorous housekeeping in their upstate New York home, Elle knows practically nothing of the outside world, even as she emerges as a young woman with impressive artistic talent. But when she makes a secret, forbidden connection to vacationers at the nearby lake;a handsome boy and his precocious twin sister’s world will shatter. Will discovering the truths about her past send her future plummeting to hell?

REVIEW: THE UNWELCOMED CHILD is the latest stand alone novel from V.C.Andrews. The storyline focuses on fifteen year old Elle Edwards-a virtual prisoner hiding in plain sight-from the world around her. Raised by her fanatically religious grandmother and long-suffering grandfather, Elle knows little about the real world other than what has been instilled by a grandmother with issues of religion, sex and Satan. Told from Elle’s POV, The Unwelcomed Child is a study in psychological, emotional and physical abuse perpetrated against a child for the sins of the mother.

The premise follows Elle as she reflects back on the only life she has ever known. Believing she is the product of a rape, Elle has been forced, by her religious grandmother, to atone for the sins of her mother. For most of her life, Elle has never known love, friendship, or the realities of life until the summer of her fifteenth year- she will meet and become friends with two vacationing teens who show her there is more to life than cleaning and praying before a statue of God.

THE UNWELCOMED CHILD is a storyline similar to many of V.C. Andrews’ previous novels and series (e.g. Flowers in the Attic) as well as the noticeable comparisons to Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’. The conflict between parent and child bleeds from one generation to the next. The religious ideals of purity and sex, evil and Satan have been drilled into a child who is innocent about the truth and the reality of the world. It is only when she meets two other teens does she finally realize that there may be more to her story than she has been told.

The bulk of the storyline encompasses a few months in the life-a summer of firsts: first taste of freedom; first friend; first kiss and a few more. For a child secluded from the outside world she is knowledgeable about some things and oblivious to many more. The building relationship with her grandfather is offset by the acidity of her grandmother and with it will come the knowledge that her grandfather may be as much a victim as is she or an enabler (at the very least).

V.C.Andrews (aka Andrew Neiderman) has written an interesting and reflective storyline that will pull the reader into the world of a young girl whose only sin is to be born. We watch as Elle blossoms under the guidance of two worldly teens whose hope is to bring our young protagonist into the 21st century.

Not quite a psychological thriller, THE UNWELCOMED CHILD is a work of fiction that, sadly, may mirror many young people’s experiences and life. The details of abuse are not graphic but will pull at your heart for a child who knew nothing else.

Guest Post-Black and Green

Writing V.C. Andrews
By Andrew Neiderman

A little over 26 years ago, I was asked by my agent, who was V.C. Andrew’s agent and who discovered her to complete the last novel in the Dollanganger series, Garden of Shadows because V.C. was seriously ill. For quite a while, my wife had been raving about Flowers in the Attic. I had published sixteen novels, most of them with young people as the protagonists, the most well-known being PIN, which became a feature film and is now in remake development. V.C. Andrews herself gave a testimony for my novel Brainchild.

Because I was still teaching English at Fallsburg High School where I taught creative writing, I was very familiar with emulating a writer’s style. However, I began a study of V.C. Andrews’ novels and successfully captured not only her writing style, but her characters and concepts. I finished the Heaven Series and went on to use her premises, sketches and even her artwork to develop her stories. Anyone reading a Neiderman thriller and then a V.C. Andrews novel, I’m told, would not believe the same writer had done both. I’m proud of that.

Being a writer is more than just composing stories built around good characters. The work never stops. Marketing and presenting became one of my major responsibilities. I did a number of talk shows in New York, Louisiana, Texas, California and other places discussing the books. I then became the V.C. Andrews ambassador, so to speak, because V.C. Andrews novels are published in 95 countries.

Here are a few funny incidents:

On a CBS Today Show in New Orleans, I was asked how can I write like a woman? I replied, “In the morning, I put on my wife’s high-heel shoes and nightgown and begin.” The moderator was taking it seriously until I laughed.

Meeting the South Korean publishers, two men and one woman for coffee, I noticed the woman never stopped staring at me. Only one spoke English, so I finally leaned over and asked him why she was staring so hard at me. He replied, “Because she can’t believe you’re a woman.”

It’s been a wonderful ride and experience, both writing the books, adapting one to film RAIN, and selling others to Hollywood. I’m happy to say, more are coming.

ROXY’S STORY (The Forbidden #2) by V.C.Andrews

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 2013

The thrilling sequel to “Forbidden Sister,” featuring a high-priced escort whose goal is to reunite her sister with their relatives, but instead finds unexpected love. Kicked out of her house because her father can no longer tolerate her constant delinquency, Roxy wanders the streets of New York, living in a fleabag hotel. Spotted by an “agent” for Madam Brittany, a sophisticated woman who runs an escort service, Roxy is taken into the Madam’s “training program” where she is educated and set up with her own boutique apartment. When Roxy takes her sister in after their parents’ death, she doesn’t expect it to be for long. Her plan is to get her sister to Paris where she can live with relatives. But then Roxy’s own life becomes complicated when she falls in love with a wealthy young Frenchman while on vacation, and suddenly her immediate future seems uncertain…

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: Roxy’s Story is the second storyline (and prequel) to V.C. Andrews (Andrew Neiderman) Forbidden Sister and focuses on RoxyWilcox-the prodigal daughter of American Norton Wilcox and his Parisian wife. Although this is a prequel, the storyline also runs parallel to some of the events in Forbidden Sister.

From her difficult birth to the day she was sent packing just prior to her eighteenth birthday, Roxy has always been the troubled child-fighting, disobedient, smoking, drinking and sex. The day her father had finally had enough was the start of Roxy’s new life and one that would eat away at her parents until the end. Leaving behind her younger sister, Roxy ventures into a world of the unknown only to realize that life isn’t as easy as she had thought it would be. Roxy’s Story is told from Roxy’s POV from a young age to the present covering approximately nine years in total. The premise parallels some of the storyline in the first book of the series Forbidden Sister and answers many of the questions about what happened to Roxy following her expulsion from her family home and the only life she had known.

The storyline premise follows Roxy as she endeavors to survive the mean streets of New York. Expecting that one day she would be on her own, Roxy had a little money saved up but found it difficult to make ends meet. Life was about to take an abrupt turn when Roxy is offered a lifetime of riches and promises-but in the end it would cost her her heart when the world of high end escort was the only means of survival for a young woman without an education, support system or family to call her own. We watch as Roxy relearns how to walk, talk and act-all in the name of the bottom line and survival.

V.C. Andrews (aka Andrew Neiderman) pulls the reader into a storyline of family dysfunction; betrayal and heartbreak; losing and letting go. We watch as one woman loses everything and everyone that she has ever cared about and in the end knows that to save her sister from the same lifestyle she will have to send her away.

ROXY’S STORY is a story of one woman’s journey from life with her dysfunctional family to the world of escorts and, the rich and famous. V.C. Andrews has written a story where a young woman is mentored into a lifestyle she had never known but one that will essentially become the very thing that will allow her to cross paths with the man to whom she will give her heart and soul. The storyline does not dwell on the sexual side of the business nor does it look at the potentially moral and ethical problems of an escort-this is one woman’s story about how she was able to survive with the help and promise made by the people who promised to protect her from the life that could have been.

I hope that V.C. Andrews will continue the sisters’s story-there is so much more to tell.

AXEL (Corps Security #1) by Harper Sloan
ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble

Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch. Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.

For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband. When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door. Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated. How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?

REVIEW: AXEL is the first instalment in Harper Sloan’s contemporary, adult, erotic Corps Security series focusing on a group of ex marines and the women they love. This is Isabelle and Axel’s storyline for a second chance at love. Axel may be a difficult read for some as part of the premise goes into graphic detail about spousal abuse and assault.

AXEL is a story of undying love between two people who have had their fair share of loss, betrayal and heartbreaking pain. Isabelle believes the only man she has ever loved is gone and dead. Ten years earlier, following the death of her parents, Isabelle’s world is thrown into turmoil when the man that she has loved since her early teens does not respond to her desperate pleas for help and reassurance. Believing Axel is dead, Isabelle’s life begins to spiral out of control until she meets the man she would marry. But marital bliss is soon replaced with broken bones, bloody noses and one too many nights spent cowering in the shadows. The day will come when Isabelle knows that the only way she will survive is to call her best friend and get the hell out of Dodge.

The storyline picks up almost two years later when Isabelle will come face to face with her past-the man she thought was dead-Holt “Axel” Reid. To say their meeting is anything but friendly is an understatement as both believe the other ran when the going got tough.

Told in alternating first person POVs, part of the story focuses on the back history between Axel and Isabelle. We watch as two teens fall desperately in love and are shattered when Axel heads out for basic training. Six months later, both of their worlds are destroyed when neither one knows the truth about what has happened to the other.

The relationship between Axel and Isabelle is hot, sexual and over the top but not before several uneasy weeks and months will pass when Isabelle refuses to acknowledge the truth. Friends are pitted against one another; the tension is high; and reality will sink in when well meaning friends let slip that there is more to their story than anyone should know.

My only complaint is that Isabelle was a little difficult to like at times with her attitude towards the people trying to give her the push she needed to accept the truth. These were the people who were there when she needed them the most; they literally saved her from the man who had destroyed her faith in humanity and yet she chose to give everyone the proverbial finger when the going got tough.

AXEL is also a storyline that introduces the friends and family of Corp Security. We meet Axel’s military buddies and best friends-all of the men believe they are not worthy of love but the women see the heroes that they are.

Harper Sloan has written an engaging, sexually passionate and intense storyline that addresses one of today’s most ignored issues-spousal abuse. If there is ever a story or series that address the need for protection and laws against the men (and women) who abuse their mates, Axel (and Cage) goes in head first and doesn’t pull any punches.

CAGE (Corp Security #2) by Harper Sloan
ABOUT THE BOOK: Release date September 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble

Greg Cage was born to protect. While growing up, he was his mother and sister’s shield against the world… until he failed. For the last decade, he has carried that guilt and need for vengeance around… until it was stripped from him. Now, with his best friend getting married and no longer needing his protection, he is even more lost, completely adrift, and desperate for some control. All he has ever known was how to protect: his family, his friends, and his country. Can he go against everything he has ever known, and give up that control?

Melissa Larson will never let anyone hold the reins in her life. She has been the rock in her family for more years than she can remember, and the fight to keep them together is her main priority right now. She has always been fiercely independent and proud. The last thing she will ever do is ask for someone else’s help. But when that choice is out of her control, forcing her to rely on others to save her and her family, and pick up the pieces that are left, will she be able to let someone else be her strength? The second Greg locks eyes with Meli, he knows that she is someone he needs. Someone he craves. Meli knew the second she met Greg that he would be nothing but trouble and heartache. Her life takes an unexpected turn, and that bitch Fate is back to wreak more havoc on another member of the Corps family.

REVIEW: CAGE is the second storyline in Harper Sloan’s contemporary, adult, erotic Corp Security series focusing on a group of ex-military friends and the women they love. This is Greg Cage and Melissa Larson’s story. Greg is floundering since his two best friends (Axel and Isabelle) reconnected after ten years apart-he believes he is no longer needed and the guilt about what happened to his twin sister eats away at his soul-one day at a time: until he meets Melissa Larson-the woman who will turn his world upside down.

The storyline, written in alternating first person POVs, will pull together the Corps Security family when Greg and Melissa’s relationship is attacked from an outside source-but a source that Greg knows only too well. Melissa’s life has been difficult caring for her aging mother and her late sister’s son but life is about to spiral out of control when someone from Greg’s immediate past makes it known that Melissa is in way over her head. Melissa and her family will become the target of a psychopathic mind and with it will come heartbreaking pain and the ugly truth about Greg’s connection to Melissa’s past.

Harper Sloan has written another sensually erotic story about two people drawn together by the physical but held together by love. Their relationship will encounter a series of threats that will pull together the Corps team to protect one of their own.

BECK (Corp Security #3) by Harper Sloan
ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 23, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble /

DEE
I’ve always been good at wearing masks. Not letting anyone see the real me. I’m content being the happy-go-lucky best friend. The strong willed boss. The independent woman who doesn’t need a man.

But the truth is I’m just as broken as the rest of you. I’m terrified that all it will take is one person to make all my carefully constructed walls crumble into fine dust. So I guard my heart with everything I have. Determined to never let anyone get close enough to hurt me again.

All is perfect until HE walks into my life. No… he doesn’t just walk. He struts his good-looking, sex-oozing self right into my space and demands that I see HIM. Making me want what I know I can’t have.

So I did the only thing I know how to do.
I run.
But he just won’t let me go.

BECK
The second I see her, I know she will be mine. I see past the gorgeous smiles and heart-stopping laughter. I see HER. She doesn’t want me to know her secrets or the past that haunts her, but I make it my mission to find out.

To make her mine.

She can run all she wants, but it will never be far enough to stop me from coming after her.
She’s it for me and she knows it.
She’s just too scared to admit it.

REVIEW: BECK is the third instalment in Harper Sloan’s contemporary, adult, erotica series focusing on a group of former marines and the women they love. This is John ‘Beck’ Beckett and Denise ‘Dee’ Roberts story-one that begins in the first book Axel.

This particular storyline begins with Dee Roberts reflecting on her life and the image she portrays to the public-the public lie; the mask that hides a multitude of secrets, demons and the truth. Dee’s background is rife with the stuff of nightmares and for many people, surviving against the odds is the best they will achieve. Dee is a woman who forges ahead, keeping the secrets and demons buried, so that no one including her two best friends has ever seen the pain and ugliness that lies within. But John Beckett-the man who stole her heart-sees everything. He may not know all of the details, but he can see into her soul and knows that there is more to the story than anyone knows.

Beck is a former marine who fell in love with Dee in Axel and Isabelle’s story. Over the ensuing two novels, we are given small hints the relationship between Beck and Dee is slowly starting to disintegrate but in reality Beck is the anchor that prevents Dee from floating away. One disaster after another befalls our heroine and Beck is the man she leans on for support. But there are some people that even the Corp Security team are unable to save, and in this, the storyline ends on a heartbreaking note.

BECK (told in alternating first person POV) is a storyline rife with graphic violence, abuse and death. Like the previous two instalments our leading heroines are continuously placed in the line of fire and the resulting pain and sorrow will affect them all. My only complaint, and this from a logistics point, why does everything happen right under the Security Team’s watch without them ever noticing? Not sure, but I guess, without the intrigue there would be no story.

Harper Sloan, once again, brings the Corp Security family together in a storyline that will break your heart; shed a tear; and leave you feeling lost. Our couple get their HEA but the losses to their friendship and the Team are going to hurt for a very long time.

WHEN THE ROGUE RETURNS ( The Duke’s Men #2) by Sabrina Jeffries

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 21, 2014

Victor Cale never imagined that his sweet, shy bride, Isabella, would use her talents for creating exquisite imitation jewels criminally. But there’s no denying that her handiwork was used in the theft of the Dutch royal diamonds– right after Isa disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, Victor is sent to Edinburgh to investigate a wealthy baron’s mysterious bride-to-be… who turns out to be Isa, masquerading as an alluring widow. No longer the meek girl he once knew, Isa boldly asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her, after he helped steal the royal diamonds!

Piecing together the truth of the past reawakens their volatile passions, which burns hotter than ever. But with a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other to bring the real thieves to justice– without getting burned themselves.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: WHEN THE ROGUE RETURNS is the second full length storyline in Sabrina Jeffries historical romance series focusing on the men (and women) who work for Max Cale (aka the Duke of Lyons) and Manton Investigations. Victor Cale’s, the Duke’s half brother, latest assignment will have him come face to face with his past-a past he wanted to forget but needed answers to- before he could move on.

The premise focuses on Victor as he begins to uncover the mystery surrounding his latest investigation. To his surprise his target is his wife; the woman who walked away ten years earlier leaving him heart broken, penniless and running from the law. Hoping for an explanation, Victor realizes that he is still in love with his wife and her story defies everything he thought he believed. As the couple begin to search for the truth, a surprising revelation will bring Victor full circle with the woman that he has never stopped loving.

The relationship is a second chance at love. We know very little about our couple in the beginning and the storyline takes shape a decade after the initial disappearance of Isabella. Ten years later, their attraction to one another is palpable but acting on their feelings would admit that there is still something there. Isabella and Victor continue to harbor anger and resentment for the perceived betrayal but the love they once shared is stronger than the lies and deceit brought about by greedy family and knowing relations. Trust must be something that is earned and to our storyline hero, trust is something he does not give easily. The romance and sexual side of the storyline is limited. Our couple ruminate about the past; blame one another; and Isa is continually self-deprecating. But Isa has a secret and one that will affect Victor in more ways than one.

WHEN THE ROGUE RETURNS is a fast paced storyline that follows Victor’s investigation into the woman he once knew. There is a little bit of mystery and suspense; betrayal and lies; forgiveness and love. Our storyline couple has missed ten years together; newlyweds and virtual strangers in the beginning, but a decade later-maturation and a world of experience –will open their eyes to the reality that love does sometimes conquer all.

GRAVE DESTINATIONS (Grave Series #2) by Lori Sjoberg

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 2, 2014

She’s sexy-fierce, resourceful—and will do anything to protect victims as innocent as she once was. But this kick-ass reaper never bargained on meeting her not-quite-human match…or putting their very souls on the line.

A luxury Caribbean cruise is Ruby Dawson’s idea of hell even under the best circumstances. Too many bad memories bubble up—especially of the wrenching injustice that made her a reaper. It doesn’t help that Jack Deverell is making this routine soul-collecting job twice as difficult with his devilish good looks and not-so-innocent questions. Now, as several unscheduled, unexplainable deaths throw passengers and crew into a panic, Jack becomes the prime suspect. The only way Ruby can save him is to challenge the decades-old curse threatening his soul. And as a malevolent unstoppable force turns their immortality into a fatal weakness, Ruby and Jack must risk their fragile humanity to save Fate’s delicate balance and their own unexpected destiny…

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: GRAVE DESTINATIONS is the second instalment in Lori Sjoberg’s contemporary paranormal Grave Series but can be read as a stand alone-the first two stories are not connected although one or two characters will overlap. The premise focuses on Ruby Dawson-a reaper-whose latest assignment is to ‘reap’ a soul on board a cruise ship but when a second death occurs within a short time period, Ruby knows something is wrong.

Enter Jack Deverell- Ruby’s prime suspect-and the man who would steal her heart. But when a third unexpected death happens, Ruby must call in reinforcements who will make Jack’s life a little more difficult on board the ship.

The relationship between Jack and Ruby is one of instant attraction-both looking for a no-strings attached night of passion but one that brings into focus the who and what that is Ruby and Jack. We learn their back stories and histories; their heartbreak and regrets. And we also learn that Jack is a little more than what he appears to be. Not quite human, Jack holds a secret that could very well end in everyone’s death.

The secondary characters are colorful and play an active role in the storyline especially Ruby’s immediate superiors. You know there is a potential for a few more storylines when Ruby says goodbye to the man who has always had her back.

GRAVE DESTINATIONS is a fast paced, interesting storyline focusing on reapers and the souls they direct into the afterlife. There is a little bit of mystery; a little bit of sex; and a little bit of humor all rolled into a story about death and crossing over. If you like a paranormal storyline with a strong heroine who knows a thing or two about surviving, then Grave Destinations is the story for you.

Interview blue:black

FOLLOW Lori: Website / Goodreads/ Facebook/Twitter

TRC: Hi Lori and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of GRAVE DESTINATIONS.

Lori Sjoberg Lori: Thanks! And thanks for having me here today!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Lori: Certainly! I write paranormal romance for Kensington Publishing. Grim Reapers are my specialty. My debut, GRAVE INTENTIONS, was released last January, and the second book in the series, GRAVE DESTINATIONS, came out a little over two weeks ago. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my husband and four-legged fur baby.

TRC: GRAVE DESTINATIONS (January 2014 release) is the second storyline in your Grave Series. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the series? Of Grave Destinations?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Grave DestinationsLori: The Grave series follows a group of reapers working in the central Florida area. To atone for their sins in life, reapers serve Fate by harvesting the souls of those who died from unnatural causes. In GRAVE DESTINATIONS, that means going on a luxury cruise. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Not for Ruby, the reaper assigned to the task. Being on an ocean liner serves as a painful reminder of why she became a reaper in the first place. Her routine soul collection turns into anything but when she encounters Jack Deverell. Not only does he make her heart race, but he also asks too many questions. And when unscheduled deaths start happening on board, Jack becomes the prime suspect. Now Ruby must decide if Jack’s responsible, or if there are darker forces lurking on board.

TRC: Are all of the storylines interconnected or can they be read as stand alone novels without too much confusion?

Lori: Each story can be read as a standalone novel, but each book gives a little more information about Fate and her band of reapers.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Grave Intentions

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Lori: My contract with Kensington was recently extended to four books, but I planned on the series running for five to six books.

TRC: What or who was the influence (if any) behind the series and the leading characters?

Lori: I’ve had a soft spot for reapers ever since I read On A Pale Horse years ago. I hadn’t thought of writing about them, though, until I watched the series Dead Like Me. As for my characters…well, I’ve always loved strong female characters like Sarah Conner and Buffy Summers, and that played a hand in the creation of Ruby.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Lori: Oh man, do I have to tell? I’d hate to ruin the image someone’s already built in his or her mind!

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Lori: When deciding where to take my stories, I try to avoid the easiest path while keeping the characters in character and their actions consistent within the parameters established in the worldbuilding.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a panster (write by the ‘seat of your pants’)?

Lori: When I started writing, I was a total panster, but now I’m a bit of both. When I start a new novel, I write scenes as they pop into my head. After I reach a certain point, the plotline begins to solidify in my mind and I’m able to organize things chronologically.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Lori: In the beginning, the characters direct the writing. It gives me a chance to slip inside their minds and see what makes them tick. But once they become fully developed, I take the reins and go from there.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Lori: If characters don’t feel genuine and relatable, they won’t come alive in the minds of readers. To accomplish that, I delve deep into the emotions and perspectives of my characters. That way, readers can understand and sympathize with their actions. If that connection isn’t made, the character fails to resonate and come across as two-dimensional.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Lori: For me, writer’s block is a sign that I’m taking the story in the wrong direction. When it happens, I take a long look at what I’m writing to figure out where I’m going wrong. If that doesn’t work, I take a break and pick up a book. Reading usually relaxes my mind and allows me to look at things from a fresh perspective.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Lori: World building! In particular, keeping the world building consistent with what was established in book one of the series.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Lori: I bounce ideas off my husband all the time. He looks at things from a completely different perspective and has given me some fantastic ideas. I also have a critique group and several author friends who are always happy to lend an ear or give feedback.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Lori: At the moment, I’m working on book three of the series. The working title is Grave Vengeance and features Dmitri, the former spy-turned reaper. And let me tell you, I’m having a great time putting his character through the proverbial ringer. *grin*

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lori: I’d just like to thank you again for inviting me to stop by!

Plus, there are rules to dancing at Benny’s: No touching, keep your clothes on at all times, and never get closer than three feet. Unfortunately for Sam, her first private client makes her want to break every single one of them.

Harrison Yates is scorching hot, but he’s got a past that involves being left at the altar not too long ago. Sam is determined to make him forget about his ex, but when she makes her move, it flings her life into a spiral of chaos she never saw coming.

Because Harrison Yates isn’t who he seems to be-and his secret will probably get her killed.

REVIEW: A LITTLE TOO HOT is the third instalment in Lisa DesRochers’s –A Little Too Far contemporary, new adult, romance series. This is Samantha West and Harrison Yates storyline. Samantha was first mentioned in A Little Too Far as Trent’s sometime girlfriend.

The storyline focuses on Samantha-she is in desperate need of a job and a place to live so when her best friend and rocker Jonathan suggests dancing at a gentlemen’s club, Samantha is a little reluctant. When everything appears clean and above board, she quickly becomes one of the club’s headliners and most requested private dancer only to be pulled into a world of mobsters, drug trafficking and so much more. When Sam’s life and that of her friends are threatened, she will find herself face to face with the people who will set her up to take the fall.

A LITTLE TOO HOT is a fast paced story of suspense, mystery and sexual seduction. There is no denying the heat and palpable attraction between Samantha and Harrison but acting on their feelings will place both of them in danger. As the storyline progresses, the relationship builds until Harrison knows it is time to walk away.

Lisa DesRochers has written an intense storyline that will captivate and pull the reader into a world of betrayal and lies; suspense and the unknown; arousal and falling in love. A LITTLE TOO HOT is a story of forbidden love; responsibility and growing up.

Tackling ‘controversial’ subject matter

by Lisa DesRochers

A LITTLE TOO FAR is full of controversial subject matter, with a girl caught between the love of her stepbrother and a priest in training. A LITTLE TOO HOT isn’t far behind. Without giving too much away, suffice it to say that we have a couple who is wildly attracted to one another, but following through on those base desires crosses way too many lines. One of the things I loved reading in reviews of A LITTLE TOO FAR was how readers expected to experience an ick factor with Lexie’s sexual encounters with either the stepbrother, the priest, or both, but as they read, they totally got behind the relationships and understood what drove them. I think this is the key to doing controversy well. It all stems from writing characters who are real and sympathetic. As a reader, when you identify with a character, if that character ends up in a tough spot, you can’t help but pull for them—even if that tough spot involves an intimate encounter with a stepbrother, a priest, or both. Strong characters in a believable situation, no matter how controversial, will always garner sympathy from a reader as long as their actions and reactions are realistic considering their circumstances. If an author has done a good job getting you inside the character’s head so you understand and relate to what motivates and drives them, almost anything goes. In my opinion, the more controversial the plot, the more character driven the story needs to be.

A Little Too FarHave you ever gone just a little too far?

Lexie Banks has.

Yep. She just had mind-blowing sex with her stepbrother. In her defense, she was on the rebound, and it’s more of a my-dad-happened-to-marry-a-woman-with-a-super-hot-son situation. But still, he’s been her best friend and confidant for the better part of the last few years … and is so off limits. It’s a good thing she’s leaving in two days for a year abroad in Rome.

But even thousands of miles away, Lexie can’t seem to escape trouble. Raised Catholic, she goes to confession in hopes of alleviating some of her guilt … and maybe not burning in hell. Instead, she stumbles out of the confessional and right into Alessandro Moretti, a young and very easy-on-the-eyes deacon … only eight months away from becoming a priest. Lexie and Alessandro grow closer, and when Alessandro’s signals start changing despite his vow of celibacy, she doesn’t know what to think. She’s torn between falling in love with the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have. And she isn’t sure how she can live with herself either way.

Until Alessandro Moretti—the one person who can make her remember—shows up on her doorstep. He’s even more devastatingly gorgeous than before, and he’s much too close for comfort. Worse, he sees right through the walls she’s built over these last eight years, right into her heart and the secrets she’s guarding.

BREAKAWAY (Portland Storm #1) by Catherine Gayle

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 20, 2013

She’s reaching for a breakaway pass.

Dana Campbell has spent the past seven years in self-imposed isolation for a crime she didn’t commit. The danger is well in the past, but her panic attacks make it impossible to have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Even her counselor has given up on her. She has to find someone she trusts to help her fight through the panic, or her seven-year ordeal will become a lifetime sentence. There’s only one man she feels safe enough to ask.

He got caught with his head down.

As the captain of the NHL’s once elite but now fading Portland Storm, Eric Zellinger knows a thing or two about keeping his focus on the job. Questions are flying about his ability to lead the team back to the playoffs. If they don’t make it, he might be shipped out of town. It’s the worst time possible for his best friend’s kid sister to divide his focus. How can he give her what she needs without jeopardizing both the Storm’s playoff hopes and his future with the team?

It’s her only chance, but it’s his last shot.

••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BREAKAWAY is the first storyline in Catherine Gayle’s contemporary, new adult, series focusing on the fictional NHL hockey team the Portland Storm. This is the Storm captain Eric Zellinger and Dana Campbell’s story and a story that is emotional, heartbreaking and painful to read.

The premise focuses on Dana Campbell and the final step in a recovery process that has been years in the making. Following a horrific off-ice attack seven years earlier, the once and former upcoming woman’s hockey player has suffered horrendous PTSD and panic attacks, withdrawal, depression and flashbacks. Her inability to move forward has frozen Dana in a world where anything and anyone can trigger an attack. Knowing that to move on she must face her biggest challenge and she risks losing her best friend when she asks Eric Zellinger to help her overcome her fears.

Breakaway is a story about a woman who has suffered physically, mentally and emotionally only to find herself unable to move forward. The psychological ramifications and the character’s inability to interact with the opposite sex on any social level is frustrating, humiliating and debilitating-not only for Dana and Eric- but the reader as well. We struggle with Dana as she tries to overcome the traumatic hold that the attack has beaten into her psyche. It is heartbreaking to watch as one woman is unable to socialize, talk with or make eye contact with any male as well as the family who loves and cares for her. She will place her fragile and broken mind into the hands of the one man who believes he will be incapable of pulling away in the end.

Catherine Gayle has written an emotional storyline that focuses on one woman’s recovery and the people who make it possible. We are introduced to the men and women of the Portland Storm-the support system and the players who know that one of their own is suffering because of the woman he loves. In the end, we will get our happily ever after, but not before our heart breaks for a young woman whose life has been broken and destroyed.

Interview

TRC: Hi Catherine and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of BREAKAWAY.

Catherine:  Thanks for having me!

Catherine GaylejpgTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: /GoodreadsWebsiteFacebook/ Twitter

Catherine: I’m a full-time writer. Even though I live in North Carolina now, I’m still a Texan at heart and probably always will be. You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take Texas out of the girl. I’ve been published for almost three years now, and I absolutely love my job.

TRC: You are primarily known for writing historical romance storylines. What factored into your decision to venture into writing other genres such as New Adult?

Catherine: In all honesty, I never thought I would write anything but historical romance until the day I started work on BREAKAWAY. I was in the midst of trying to write one of my historicals that was not moving at all, when the opening scene to BREAKAWAY hit me. It was fully-fleshed out right from the get-go, and I knew I wouldn’t get anything done the rest of the day if I didn’t at least write that scene. So I took an hour and wrote it, then sent it off to a few of my author-friends in the hopes that they’d tell me it was awful and I needed to put it away to get back to work on my historical. They didn’t. They told me the opposite, in fact. The next thing I knew, BREAKAWAY took over my life until it was finished.

BreakawayTRC: BREAKAWAY (December 2013) is the first instalment in your contemporary, new adult PORTLAND STORM series. Would you please tell us something about the series and storyline premise?

Order: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO

Catherine: The PORTLAND STORM series will be based around an NHL team, the Portland Storm. Each book will have a different player on the team as the hero–no cliffhangers! BREAKAWAY is about the team’s captain, Eric Zellinger, and his best friend’s kid sister, Dana Campbell. He’s always had a thing for her, but she was raped several years before the story begins, and in the aftermath of being raped, she’s suffered from panic attacks when she’s around men. Eric has convinced himself he’ll never be able to have the sort of relationship he wants with her because of that, but Dana wants him to help her to get past the panic. The next book in the series will star Dana’s older brother, and I’ve already got ideas in place for several more books down the line.

TRC: The storyline focus is difficult and heartbreaking and, will be for many women who have suffered similarly. What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Catherine: The biggest challenge for me in writing BREAKAWAY was that I took a piece of my own life–being raped and suffering from panic attacks afterward–and gave it to my heroine. I had to strike the right balance of capturing what Dana experienced without turning it into me and my life. There’s a fine line between conveying a fictional character’s emotional journey as honestly as possible and backing off from it a little too much because of what emotions it brought up in me.

TRC: Are any of the characters or premise based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Catherine: Dana’s rape and panic attacks are, as explained above, based on my own experiences. The rest of her character, and all of the other characters and situations, are purely fictional.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Catherine: Oh, wow. I’m so not good with this. LOL. I’d say Dana Campbell could be played by a younger Charlize Theron, and Eric Zellinger could be played by Ian Somerhalder.

Dana and Eric 2

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Catherine: I’m a character-driven writer, and that tends to lend itself well to keeping the plot unpredictable. In any situation my characters face, if I try to force them into actions just because it suits the plot, then the plot falls apart. I have to allow my characters the freedom to react and respond in a natural way.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a panster (write by the ‘seat of your pants’)?

Catherine: I’ve been a bit of both. With my historicals, I am very much a plotter. With my contemporary romances, I’ve found it is best to write as a pantser. I have an end-goal in mind from the beginning, but the path to getting there is up in the air.

To Enchant an EarlTRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Catherine: My characters direct the storyline. I always run into problems if I try to force them to adhere to a pre-determined plot point.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Catherine: I think that writers have to write honestly enough, to go deep enough into their characters’ heads, that THEY experience the emotions alongside their characters. Sometimes, we’re afraid to go there because of what it might bring forward from our own lives. But if we hold back from that, then we’re creating a distance between ourselves and our characters that will always transfer over to the reader, as well.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Catherine: I have multiple series going, and so if I get stuck on one piece I’m writing, I always have some other project I can work on. It helps me to keep my sanity, and to maintain productivity.

The Devil to PayTRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Catherine: I’ve got some fantastic critique partners–Erin Knightley, Tammy Falkner, Ava Stone, Jessica Knight-Catania, and Jane Charles, just to name a few–who are always willing and able to help bouncing ideas around. I’ve also done a plotting weekend with Erin Knightley and Heather Snow, where we’ve helped one another work out ideas for our upcoming projects. Any time I get together with another writer, there is a great possibility of ideas being tossed around.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Catherine: I’m writing the second PORTLAND STORM novel, tentatively titled ON THE FLY, and brainstorming ideas for a historical novella, A DANCE WITH THE DEVIL.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Catherine: Thanks so much for having me!

The relationship is supposed to be strictly business, but fighting demons together stirs up emotions they never expected. Turns out demon slaying is a breeze compared to facing their scarred pasts and even worse – hearts

Review:

Beg me to Slay is not my first book by Lisa Kessler, nor will it be my last.  I loved Beg Me to Slay.  This was a wonderful fun story, with a touch of witty humor and lots of action. Tegan is our heroine, and she is right from the start a tough kick assed one. 4 years ago she was attacked, and those scars remain.  But Tegan spend the years making herself be able to defend herself against any kind of attack again, and she becomes a black belt.  This also becomes her business running a martial arts school.  She hires a private investigator, to help her find the man who attacked years before, after she saw him again from afar.

Enter Gabe, the private investigator, who is also a demon slayer.  He immediately recognizes the scar that Tegan has from her attack, as that of a demon.  He takes her case, and is determined to stay by her side every moment to protect her.  Of course, Tegan (no her name is not Megan), doesn’t believe in demons, and isn’t too thrilled with Gabe following her every move.  Her comments at times are hysterical, and I thoroughly enjoyed their banter.  Needless to say, it doesn’t take Tegan long to learn there really are demons in this world. But make no mistake, this is an exciting and action filled story, as Gabe and Tegan become awesome partners to find the attacker, slay demons, and try discover how to stop a demon war on the horizon.

But most importantly, the romance that built between Gabe and Tegan was awesome.  Both having their own issues to fight; hers getting past her attack; and his have lost his fiancée to a demon attack.  It was beautiful to watch them both fall hard for each other, and try to rise above their own demons.

It was an exciting story all the way through, and just when you thought it was over, another twist comes to knock you for a loop. I could not put this book down. Lisa Kessler has created a wonderful couple, who work so well as the warriors they are, not to mention how great they are together.  I love the title of this book…Beg Me to Slay, but I will make a slight change.  Please Lisa, I BEG YOU TO STAY  with these super heroes. It would be so much fun to continue their storyline, as they battle demons together. I want more of Tegan and Gabe.
