SWEET REVENGE (Sin Brothers #2) by Rebecca Zanetti

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 3, 2013

The One Man She Can’t Have

Matt Dean was born to fight…and kill. A member of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be the perfect soldiers with an expiration date. Now, with time running out, he’s gone rogue in a relentless quest for the one person who can save them. His mission leads him to Charmed, Idaho…and to a beautiful woman with eyes like emeralds and a body made for pleasure.

The One Woman He Can’t Resist

Laney Jacobs knows the mysterious, handsome stranger is trouble from the moment he walks into her bar, looking for a job. She’s spent years running from her own past—the last thing she needs is a romantic entanglement. But Matt’s strong arms offer her protection, and his gentle touch promises passion unlike anything she’s ever known. As lethal forces surround them, revealing explosive secrets about Matt’s past and putting everything—and everyone—he holds dear in danger, can he save them all before time runs out?

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SWEET REVENGE is the second storyline in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult, paranormal storyline focusing on four brothers and their connection to a secret military operation where super soldiers are genetically engineered. The Commander is hoping for the return of all of his enhanced fighting machines and the Gray Brothers continue to allude their captor. This is Matt and Laney’s story.

The focus of the series follows the ‘Gray’ brothers as they try to find the code that will unlock the mechanism that will end their lives. With only six weeks on the clock, Matt ‘Gray’ Dean believes he has found the doctor responsible for implanting the ‘death sentence’ that awaits his brothers and himself. Heading to the small town of Charmed, Idaho Matt stumbles into the path of a serial killer that is somehow connected to his past. When he meets bar owner Laney Jacobs, the attraction is immediate and the sexual heat is volatile.

The relationship between Laney and Matt is both seductive and sensual. Matt holds himself back knowing his enhanced powers may reveal more about himself than he wants anyone to know, but Laney soon discovers that Matt is someone she has known for a very long time.

I uncovered the twist to the storyline early on but it did not deter me from the suspense and mystery surrounding the events in Charmed, Idaho and the connections to the Gray Brothers and the ‘Commander’. The Commander has been searching for five years knowing their time is almost at an end, but the Gray Brothers are no longer the small boys who feared the man that pushed everyone a little too far.

Rebecca Zanetti has written a powerful storyline of family and love. Four brothers, connected by DNA and a history of abuse and power, will search for the code that will save their lives. Along the way, each will find the woman who is the other half to their soul taking them one step closer to the final confrontation.

Description:
When Evan Trueblood blows into town looking for his wife, Molly, he’s convinced that she came to see her best friend, Jane. But it seems like the witch made it to New Orleans and then disappeared without a trace.

Jane is ready to do whatever it takes to find her friend. Her desperate search leads her deep into a web of black magic and betrayal and into the dark history between vampires and witches. But the closer she draws to Molly, the closer she draws to a new enemy—one who is stranger and more powerful than any she has ever faced

Review:

Black Arts by Faith Hunter is the 7th book in her wonderful Jane Yellowrock series.  I have been a fan of this series, and Faith Hunter from the start, and Black Arts is the best one yet.  There is so much action, suspense, excitement, with a super fantastic heroine; but it is also a story that is filled with so many plots, twists and surprises along the way.

The story starts with a blast, as Jane’s house is almost literally being blown away, and Jane finds the culprit to be Evan Trueblood (Molly’s husband) using his magic abilities.  Evan, who is always suspicious of Jane, is angry, and wants Jane to let Molly come out.  But Molly isn’t there, and when Evan cools down, we learn that she is missing.  Evan and his two wonderful children, Angie Baby and EJ all come to stay with Aunt Jane, while she tries to help find Molly.  That is just the start; before long, Jane will have a few more different cases that will eventually all come together as one major one.  Between Molly having disappeared; Katie gives Jane a case to find two of her missing girls; and Leo, the Master of the City of New Orleans (MOC), has Jane in charge of security for his special “gather” event. Geez, Jane has her hands full. On top of this, she is now officially Leo’s Enforcer. Whew!

But Jane is not your everyday female.  She is a skinwalker, and if you have read my other reviews, Jane also has our wonderful mountain lion inside her……ahhh I love Beast.  Jane is smart, savvy, strong, talented, and no one can really stop her.  She can be beaten up, bloodied, heartbroken, but she always rises up to the challenge, though this will be her toughest and most dangerous assignments. There is a vampire master , who is out to kill Leo, and has strong magic helping him.  But again, he doesn’t have Jane, like Leo does.

What follows is such an exciting non stop action filled story. Jane must rely on her own personal team, Eli and Alex; as well as those she works with from Leo’s, such as Bruiser, Derek, and others we have come to know along the way.  The villains are very powerful, and the strongest one yet, who are out to get Jane, and kill Leo; some we have met before (Adrianna) and some new (Jack).  Jane finds herself stumped at times, and attacked quite a few times, but she pushes on to find her friend, Molly, who Jane fears may be too far gone to save.  The pieces of this puzzle, with so many pieces, will fall into place as we race to the exciting climax.  I was on the edge of my seat, as the major battle at the end was totally awesome and mind boggling.  It was heart stopping all the way to the end, and you did not know if any of them would survive.  Jane and Beast, use their combined powers together to fight the fight to the end against an evil so strong, the odds were against them all.

Another thing I loved about this book is that Jane is coming to terms about her past, feeling more free to open up about her not being human (a skinwalker), and if she has to, bringing out Beast.  We also learn more about Jane, especially when she sees Aggie again, and sweats out the answers, and her cute gift, Kitkat.  Romantically, I am not a fan of Ric, he has hurt her too much.  I prefer at this point Bruiser, or even Eli; though in Black Arts, there is one scene that has me opening my eyes to another long shot possibility for Jane.  LOL  We shall see.

As I said before, Faith Hunter is an awesome writer, who puts out a fantastic storyline with so much action and excitement, not to mention all the plots and details that make you wonder how she does it.  Especially when it all falls into place.  Black Arts is a wonderful addition to the Jane Yellowrock series. If you have not read it, it time for you to start.

Addicted To YouABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 22, 2013

She’s addicted to sex. He’s addicted to booze…the only way out is rock bottom.

No one would suspect shy Lily Calloway’s biggest secret. While everyone is dancing at college bars, Lily stays in the bathroom. To get laid. Her compulsion leads her to one-night stands, steamy hookups and events she shamefully regrets. The only person who knows her secret happens to have one of his own.

Loren Hale’s best friend is his bottle of bourbon. Lily comes at a close second. For three years, they’ve pretended to be in a real relationship, hiding their addictions from their families. They’ve mastered the art of concealing flasks and random guys that filter in and out of their apartment.

But as they sink beneath the weight of their addictions, they cling harder to their destructive relationship and wonder if a life together, for real, is better than a lie. Strangers and family begin to infiltrate their guarded lives, and with new challenges, they realize they may not just be addicted to alcohol and sex.

Their real vice may be each other.

REVIEW: ADDICTED TO YOU is the first storyline in Krista Ritchie’s contemporary, new adult series focusing on two twenty year old Ivy League college students who enable one another’s addictions. Lily Calloway is addicted to sex and Loren (Lo) Hale is addicted to alcohol. ADDICTED TO YOU is the beginning of their story; one that follows Lily and Lo as they give in to the demands of their bodies and one another.

The premise follows Lily as she continuously places herself in danger for the next sexual fix. Nothing and no one is off limits including internet porn, gigolos and the nameless, faceless strangers she seduces every night. As Lo tries to help Lily with her addiction he is pulled deeper into the bottle until both of their situations affect not only their own lives but those of friends and family.

The family backgrounds play a significant role in the storyline. All of the major characters are from wealthy, uber rich and ultimately controlling families. There is no question that money breeds strange bedfellows and in this there appears to have been quite a bit of bed hopping from one generation to the next. As the heirs apparent to their family businesses, our class of wonder children makes you cringe at the possibility about the who and what running the Fortune 500 companies and controlling world powers.

Sex addiction is primarily a disorder that affects men but there are cases of women who cannot control their compulsions and impulses-yes sexual addiction is considered an OCD. In many ways, there is a double standard, as it addresses sexual addiction-men are alpha and horny; women are sluts and whores. And like most addictions, there is always a secondary psychological problem in play that pushes the addict into risky situations. Krista Ritchie has apparently done some homework with the issues of sex and alcoholism, for our couple is endowed with most of the side effects (public and private) including enabling one another with their demons.

This is not an easy story to read; you can’t help but sit in judgment against a young woman who thinks only of herself and her next orgasm. There are very few redeeming qualities in our couple but when the truth is finally revealed, help will come from the most unexpected revelations.

Krista & Becca Ritchie has written an introductory storyline that is gritty, raw and abrasive. There is no overt sexual situations-most are implied or recalled. But in the end, ADDICTED TO YOU will make you question the reality of the world in which you live-because you really do not know anything about the people next door or of those you meet.

RicochetABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 2013

As a sex addict, Lily Calloway must do the impossible. Stay celibate for 90 days.

Cravings and fantasies become her new routine, but while Loren Hale recovers from his alcohol addiction, Lily wonders if he’ll realize what a monster she really is. After all, her sexual compulsions begin to rule her life the longer she stays faithful to him.

Progress. That’s what Lily’s striving for. But by trying to become closer to her family—people who aren’t aware of her addiction—she creates larger obstacles. When she spends time with her youngest sister, she learns more about her than she ever imagined and senses an unsettling connection between Daisy and Ryke Meadows.

With Lily and Lo’s dysfunctional relationship teetering and unbalanced, they will need to find a way to reconnect from miles apart. But the inability to “touch” proves to be one of the hardest tests on their road to recovery. Some love brushes the surface. Some love is deeper than skin.

Lily and Lo have three months to discover just how deep their love really goes.

——

Companion to the Sequel: A full-length New Adult Romance that continues where Addicted to You left off. As a companion novel, it bridges the gap between the first and second book. It is highly recommended to be read before Addicted for Now.

REVIEW: RICOCHET is the second instalment (novella) in Krista Ritchie’s contemporary, new adult Addicted series. The storylines takes place immediately follow the end of Addicted to You (Book 1) and ends just prior to the start of Addicted for Now (Book 2).

Krista & Becca Ritchie takes the reader into the mind of a sex addicted young woman as she endeavors to overcome some of her greatest fears and obsession with sex and getting off. This is a story about how one woman strives to keep the obsession from ruining her life only to discover that the compulsion is too strong. Lily struggles to keep a promise to herself and to the man that she loves. Recovery from addiction is hard but even harder when the drug that you crave is so close at hand.

RICOCHET is a novella that fills in some of the blanks of Lily and Lo’s prior history. We discover that the attraction to one another begins at an early age and so too, perhaps, the obsession and addictive tendencies that control their daily lives. We watch as Lily re-connects with her sisters and grows closer to the people who will be there through the times ahead.

Again, this will be a difficult storyline for many readers. There is no graphic sex only implied, but the actions of Lily Calloway will make you think about the reality of life for people who suffer with a similar addiction.

Those are the three words Lily Calloway fears the most. But Loren Hale is determined to be with Lily without enabling her dangerous compulsions. With their new living situation—sleeping in the same bed, for real, together—Lily has new battles. Like not jumping Lo’s bones every night. Not being consumed by sex and his body.

Loren plans to stay sober, to right all of his wrongs. So when someone threatens to expose Lily’s secret to her family and the public, he promises that he’ll do anything to protect her. But with old enemies surfacing, Lo has more at stake than his sobriety.

They will torment Lily until Lo breaks.

And his worst fear isn’t relapsing. He hears the end. He sees it. The one thing that could change everything. Just three words.

No. More. Us.

New Adult Romance recommended for readers 18+ for mature content

REVIEW: ADDICTED FOR NOW is the third instalment in Krista Ritchie’s new adult, contemporary Addicted series focusing on two young twenty something adults with some dark and dangerous addictions. In this particular storyline Loren (Lo) is a recovering alcoholic and Lily is in treatment for sex addiction. The Addicted Series pulls the reader into the ugly world of addiction and the resulting damage and destruction that comes with the inability to stop or just say no.

The storyline focuses on Lily and Loren’s recovery. Lo has just returned from a three month stint in rehab where he has had no access to Lily-his best friend and partner. Lily’s ongoing treatment for sex addiction will play a major role in Loren’s recovery especially when he realizes the how and why of Lily’s deep seated need for sex. This is a couple who have enabled each other for years and their recovery and subsequent survival will depend on the support of family, friends and each other. But like all dark stories, someone wants Lily and Lo to fail. As Loren and their group of friends begin to search for the person or people responsible, Lily begins to slide into her old habits when the threats come from an unlikely source.

ADDICTED FOR NOW and the Addicted Series are a gritty, no nonsense storyline about addiction and recovery. In this particular series Krista Ritchie address sex addiction and holds nothing back when a young woman places herself in danger at every opportunity with her need and addiction to sex. The storyline is told from alternating first person POVs –Lily and Lo- and makes no apologies for the dark side of addiction and pain.

Review:
Hope Flames by Jaci Burton is the first book in her Hope series.  This is my first book by Burton, and after reading Hope Flames it will not be my last.  I loved this book. It was such a fun, relaxing, enjoyable and sexy read.

The story takes place in a town called Hope, and we meet our heroine, Emma at the start.  Emma, after being away for years, has returned home to Hope to start her own Animal Clinic.  After a successful first day, Emma is about to close when she meets Luke, who is a cop in town.  Luke brings his injured dog, Boomer, who also acts like a police dog, helping apprehend criminals.  There was an immediate attraction between them, but because both have had bad experiences with romance, each hesitated to act on it.

This was such a wonderful romance, as Burton took the time to slowly build up this romance, with them first becoming friends. Luke wasn’t interested in any romance, just one night stands, but he knew there was something different about Emma, Emma herself was determined to build up her practice, and not let herself become emotionally involved with any man, especially after her last relationship was a disaster. But then the friendship only didn’t last too long, as their sexual chemistry was off the chart.  When they acted on their desires (very hot), they both convinced themselves to enjoy what they had, without any committments.

What I loved about this book was the small town atmosphere, with their friends, and family that made this even better.  I absolutely loved their dogs; Luke’s Boomer, and Emma’s Daisy and Annie. It was so much fun to watch them all together.  Their romance was so heart warming, as they had to get past their bad experiences, allowing themselves to open their hearts.  They both started to fall hard for each other, and the sexual chemistry between them was off the wall, and so well done by Burton.

The last quarter of the book was very exciting,  with a side story of a burglar stealing drugs from various places, including Emma’s clinic.  But the most suspense comes from the past rising up to put one of them in danger.

This series has so such potential for many of the characters whom we got to meet in Hope to have their own book.  Hope Flames was such an enjoyable read, with a great couple;  wonderful romance with some hot sex scenes; and  cute lovable animals.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book that I read this in one day, since I did not want to let this go.   Jaci Burton has impressed me as writer, allowing  me to get to know and love her characters.  This was such a warm, and fun story. I am now vested into reading this series to see everyone in Hope again.

TO CATCH HER DEATH (Grim Reality #1) by Boone Brux

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release October 17, 2013

What do you get when you cross a hockey mom with the grim reaper? Me, Lisa Carron. If being a depressed, frumpy, widowed mother of three wasn’t bad enough, I just found out I’m a grim reaper. I know what you’re thinking. Wow, that’s kind of sexy and full of awesomeness. Hardly. Oh, and my clients? Stupid people. Like I don’t get enough of that from the living. Since Alaska is big and angels of death are few, I’ve been partnered with reaper extraordinaire, Nate Cramer. He’s strong, silent, and way too good looking for my recently widowed state. Oh, and he reaps violent criminals, so that should be interesting. Forget the danger and the hours of self-analysis it will take for me to find my reaper mojo. My biggest problem? Hiding it all from my overly attentive family and nosy neighbors. Now that’s going to take a miracle.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TO CATCH HER DEATH is the first storyline in Boone Brux’s new paranormal/UF Grim Reality series focusing on new reaper Lisa Carron and the world in which she has been introduced. As a widowed mother of three, Lisa has floundered in a state of depression and withdrawal for over one year but the day she walks into a convenience store holdup, her life will change forever. With her ability to see the dearly departed, she will embark on a whirlwind training session where the rules and regulations are literally out of this world. Add in a gorgeous and handsome partner named Nate Cramer and Lisa’s new job looks better every day-if it wasn’t for the fact that she has to deal with dead people all the time.

Lisa Carron is a sassy, no nonsense thirty five year old woman who knows a thing or two about death and loss. She is strong but sensitive; sassy and acerbic; and willing to give the grim reaper thing a go.

We are introduced to Lisa’s best friend Vella where much of the sarcastic and witty interplay between two besties is fun and playful: there is also the potential for a love interest in the form of Lisa’s new reaper partner Nate (let’s hope); and we all want to know a little bit more about the big man himself-Constantine.

But there is also the underlying story that runs throughout the novel (and possibly the series) as it pertains to Lisa’s husband and his early demise. There is more to this particular part of the storyline than has been revealed and I am looking forward to discovering the connection.

Boone Brux has written a storyline with a little bit of humor and fun; some paranormal and magical aspects and one that introduces the major players in the world of the Grim Reapers and the worlds beyond.

COOPER’S REVENGE by T.L.Williams

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 2013

Navy Seal, Logan Alexander, is trying to put his life back together following a career-ending injury in Afghanistan, when he learns that his younger brother, Cooper, has been killed in an ambush while on patrol with his Ranger unit in Iraq. As Alexander delves into the circumstances leading to Cooper’s death, he learns of the role that the secret arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Qods Force, plays in exporting terror.

Alexander vows to avenge his brother’s death. With the financial backing of a Kuwaiti billionaire, and a group of like-minded Special Forces operatives, Alexander conceives a plan that takes his team to the Sonora Desert, Europe, and the Middle East, where he comes face-to-face with the man responsible for Cooper’s death

*************************

REVIEW: COOPER’S REVENGE is the introductory storyline in T.L. Williams series focusing on former Navy SEAL Logan Alexander and his foray into civilian life where he begins to uncover the truth behind his brother’s death. Logan has been relieved of his position with the Navy SEALs due to a horrendous injury that the Navy believes has left him incapable to return to active duty. Venturing forth with his own company of former Special Forces Ops and SEALs, Logan, with the aid of a Kuwaiti billionaire, forms a team that goes undercover to remove, reveal and destroy an Iranian munitions factory that is responsible for the manufacturing of IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) and ultimately the death of Logan’s brother Cooper Alexander.

The reader is introduced to Logan’s group of ten former military soldiers and personnel who will become part of the team willing to risk everything to put an end to the people behind the IEDs. There is also a small romance developing between Logan and a former Iranian interpreter for the American military.

T.L. Williams is a former CIA operations officer and his military knowledge is without question. The storyline is awash in military jargon and scenarios: rife with historical situations and detailed analysis about the Middle East War and its’ affect on the American psyche and nationalism; but it is also a storyline that, at times, got lost in the vast amount of facts, technical terminology and trivia as it concerns the operations in the Middle East. Williams also introduces the history and religious belief system of the Muslim Fundamentalists and how it relates to war, death and the ultimate revenge. At times, some of the information was overwhelming and I thought unnecessary to the actual storyline.

The storyline and final confrontation are slow to develop as Williams begins to build the background information and training procedures as well as outlining the detailed plans to go in, take down and get out for a team that has seen death and destruction first hand. The novel is told from third person POV but from two completely different perspectives-The Americans and The Iranians. The reader is pulled into a story where two distinct sides fight the same war but for different reasons. And in the end, everyone involved is human and will suffer the pain of loss when neither side is really the winner until the final pull of the switch.

COOPER’S REVENGE is ultimately a story about two brothers who went to war-both of whom returned home-but only one survived. This is a story about family and loss; war and hate; betrayal and revenge. T.L.Williams has written a vastly detailed storyline about a war that shows no sign of ending and a war that continues to send home too many heroes that will be buried before they have had a chance to live.

Unit 400

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Unit 400: The Assassins is the sequel to T.L. Williams award winning debut novel, Cooper’s Revenge.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is reeling from a devastating attack on its covert training center in Bandar Deylam, Iran. In retaliation Iran’s Supreme Ruler unleashes an ultra secret weapon – Unit 400. This cadre of trained assassins has its roots
in ancient Persian culture, when Ismaili leader, Hassan al-Sabbah, unleashed the Hashashin from their mountain fortress at Alamut to assassinate political and religious foes.

One man stands in their way – former Navy SEAL Logan Alexander. Logan and his Special Forces team travel to Europe and South America in

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: UNIT 400: The Assassins is the second storyline in T.L. Williams series focusing on former Navy SEAL Logan Alexander and his endeavor to right the wrongs in a war out of his control. This particular storyline follows one year later and builds on the previous book-Cooper’s Revenge- where Logan and his team of former SEALs and Special Forces took down an IED munitions factory but in doing so killed a couple of high ranking officials in the Iranian army. UNIT 400: The Assassins is about a network of Iranian Assassins that Iran’s supreme ruler can use to order an attack against their country’s enemies-the USA and Logan Alexander are their current targets.

Once again, T.L. Williams forges an enormously detailed storyline about war and Middle Eastern military history. The copious amount of terminology and facts tend to be overwhelming at times in that it felt like the reader was being pulled into a side story that never came to fruition. The analysis about the American Navy and all of its’ potential appears to be a side commentary to the actual storyline but in doing so may be preparing for future stories in the series. The action is limited as most of the storyline is a build up to the final encounter.

The historical basis of the UNIT 400 looks back at a fundamentalist belief system that believes in the right to destroy and enact revenge against anyone or anything standing in their way (my words). When the team took down the IED plant, the ensuing Iranian investigation leads indirectly to Logan via Kuwait, London, Spain and the USA. The Supreme Ruler and the Iranian Army want revenge for the attack against their own and Logan is their next target.

The storyline is once again written from two third party POVs including an assassin from Iran’s Unit 400. The reader is pulled into a global adventure that watches as an assassin begins his final journey towards his own demise; and a hero who must assemble his team in an attempt to bring a murderer to justice.

UNIT 400: The Assassins is a storyline that does not apologize for the activity of war and all of its’ victims. It is a story about a country at war with the world and how that world becomes smaller every day. It is also a story about one man-Logan Alexander-and the people in whom he must trust his life and the lives of the men who work with him. T.L. Williams writes an intriguing and interesting series about a war of which one man is hoping to win-one battle at a time.

REVIEW: FOREVER WITH YOU is the third and final storyline in Laurelin Paige’s contemporary, new adult, erotic Fixed series focusing on Alayna Withers and Hudson Pierce. Although this is the end of Alayna and Hudson’s arc-Laurelin is continuing the series with one of the characters introduced in Forever With You.

The storyline continues from the previous two instalments but focuses on Alayna’s need to uncover the truth behind Hudson’s relationship with a woman he claims is only a friend. The deeper Alayna digs the more she becomes unglued only to discover that everything about her relationship with Hudson has been a lie.

Laurelin Paige pulls the reader into an emotional storyline that will make you think. Alayna and Hudson both have issues of trust but what Alayna uncovers will blow your mind. What you thought you knew is not what you will expect.

FOREVER WITH YOU is an emotional storyline about the extent of one family’s dysfunctional nature and the extent of which has affected the next generation. The final resolution was difficult to accept under the circumstances but this is fictional story with a HEA- one that did not sit well with this reader.

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Jenn Bennett as our guest today.

Jenn Bennett

Jenn is here to discuss her book, Bitter Spirits, which was released last week, and is the first book in her Roaring Twenties series

Our review of Bitter Spirits is below this post.

Let’s meet Jen.

Interview

Hi Jenn!  Thank you for taking the time today, to answer some questions for your fans at The Reading Café.  We are always looking forward to learning more about the author behind the book.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Jenn:  It’s my pleasure to be here, so thank you for having me! For those who don’t know, I write the Arcadia Bell romantic urban fantasy series for Pocket Books (the fourth book comes out in May). BITTER SPIRITS is the first book in my new 1920s paranormal romance series with Berkley Sensation. In addition to writing, I’m also an artist. And I currently live in Atlanta with my husband and two (very) bad pugs.

TRC:  Did you always have an interest in writing?  When and how did you first start writing?

Jenn:  A few years ago, I decided I wanted to write a book. A year after that, I’d written a couple more, signed with a literary agent, and sold two books to a major publishing house. I’ve since sold six books and never looked back. I don’t think my story is the typical path to traditional publishing, but I like to think all the daydreaming I’ve done over the years finally got put to good use. Writing feels like what I was meant to do.

TRC:  You have a new series, Roaring Twenties.  How did you come up with the idea of this series? Any particular reason that drew you to the 1920’s as opposed to other historical time periods? Tell us a little something about the premise of this series…

Jenn: I’ve always been attracted to the 1920s, especially in America—Prohibition, flappers, jazz… But from a writer’s point of view, the most interesting thing is that it was a decade in which women broke social barriers and ventured into institutions that were previously regarded as Men Only. Women got their hair bobbed at the barbershop, smoked cigarettes, and sat at the bar alongside men. They moved to big cities to find work. Drove cars. Voted. They were pioneers, learning how to be independent, and that’s exactly the kind of heroine I like to write. And though I’ve seen a few romances written in 1920s New York, my series takes place in San Francisco, where the hills and fog and Pacific Ocean give things a very different flavor.

Bitter SpiritsTRC: BITTER SPIRITS, which was released last week, is your first book in this series.  Can you please give us a brief description of the book?

Jenn:  Spirit medium Aida Palmer channels the dead on stage at the Gris-Gris speakeasy. She meets Winter Magnusson—a scarred, brick wall of a man known around town as the “Viking Bootlegger”—who is haunted by the ghost of a murdered Chinese prostitute and enlists her help to exorcise it. The mystery of why he is haunted draws the two of them together and takes them through foggy San Francisco, from luxury homes to the backstreets of Chinatown—during which, they fall wildly in love. It’s spooky, thrilling, erotic, and terribly romantic. (At least, I think so!)

TRC:  How many books are you planning for your Roaring Twenties series?

Jenn: Hopefully three, at least, and they all center on the Magnusson family. BITTER SPIRITS is Aida and Winter’s story, and GRIM SHADOWS is Lowe and Hadley’s story (Winter’s archeologist brother and a museum curator). The third will feature Bo and Astrid (Winter’s baby sister, who is secretly in love with his assistant).

TRC:  The bootlegging culture was such a business of intrigue and back alley deals, what kind of research did you do to get such a great understanding of the business back then? And have you ever been to a modern-day speakeasy?

Jenn:  Aside from the countless hours I’ve spent online looking through San Francisco archival photos, I’ve amassed a small library’s worth of 1920s research material, including both original material (1920s magazines and maps of San Francisco) and secondary sources (books and films about Prohibition). Though gangsters like Al Capone snagged all the splashy headlines, I’m more interested in people like Roy Olmstead, a former Seattle cop known as “the Good Bootlegger,” who didn’t dilute his liquor or mass-murder his rivals to make a buck.

And yes, there are a couple of speakeasies here in Atlanta (Prohibition in Buckhead, Edgewood Speakeasy), but I’d really love to visit PDT in New York or Bourbon and Branch in San Francisco. Who’s up for a cocktail?

TRC:  You have written Urban Fantasy and now Paranormal Romance.  Do you have a preference of either genre?  Are there any other genres you’re itching to try?

Jenn: The bootlegging culture was such a business of intrigue and back alley deals, what kind of research did you do to get such a great understanding of the business back then? And have you ever been to a modern-day speakeasy? The bootlegging culture was such a business of intrigue and back alley deals, what kind of research did you do to get such a great understanding of the business back then? And have you ever been to a modern-day speakeasy? For me, it’s all about romance, no matter what I’m writing. My urban fantasy is a May-December love story between a magically gifted bartender and a sexy Earthbound demon, told over several books, with an HEA at the series’ end. The Roaring Twenties series is one couple/one HEA in each book. One day, I’d like to try my hand at contemporary romance. As long as I can write characters that fall in love, I’m happy.

TRC:  Please tell us what you working on now, and what you have upcoming in 2014?

Jenn: I have three books out this year: BITTER SPIRITS, BANSHING THE DARK (Arcadia Bell #4, May), and GRIM SHADOWS (Roaring Twenties #2, June). I’ve recently written a sexy contemporary young adult romance—no paranormal!—and am currently working on a 1940s young adult mystery/romance.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you like to outline your story before you start? Do you have a specific place you like to write?  Is there a special time of day that works best for you? Or how about writing fuel? Candy/coffee/cereal?

Jenn: I only need to know two things before I start a book: how it begins and ends. I outline a few chapters at a time and readjust the story as I create the characters. I do all my writing in my office, day and night, with lots of tea and Fox’s Glacier candy.

TRC:  Many authors have friends or family, that they bounce ideas and information back and forth.  Do you have anyone you like to discuss your story with?

Jenn:  My husband. He’s a copywriter, smart and creative, and he’s a terrific brainstormer. I occasionally use beta readers after I’ve written a first draft, but not always. My agent, Laura Bradford, is also hands-on with editing after the first draft and her feedback is invaluable.

TRC:  Your website details your extensive travels. What are some of your favorite places you visited?

Jenn:  Taipei, Taiwan. I love that city; it’s given me great stories about drunken karaoke with transsexual bar owners and insane, near-death cab rides. I also love Hong Kong—it’s vibrant and exciting, day or night.
