Description:
It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits…

Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.

Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her…

On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise

 Review:

Bitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett is the first book in her new Roaring Twenties series.  As you can tell from the series title, this takes place in San Francisco, during the prohibition era.  We meet our heroine, Aida, who works in a speakeasy, as a medium.  Aida can summon the dead or send them away. It is because of this ability, she meet our hero, Winter, who is a hulk of a man, & in trouble.  Aida’s boss, Velma, has magic ability, and calls in Aida to help Winter, who is being besieged by ghosts, as well as having been poisoned by magic.  Between the two of them, they manage to help Winter; but not before Aida begins to feel the attraction to this huge, scarred, but otherwise gorgeous man.

Winter, who is a bootlegger and rich, can’t get Aida out of his head, and in short time the two of them find themselves in a hot, steamy relationship, which both agree will be with no commitments.  Though their attraction to each other was strong, both have their own private issues and the romance was a nice slow to build.  The first half of the book was mostly the attraction between them, which they acted on quite often, with off the wall sexual chemistry. The other side of the story was the paranormal storyline of who was using magic to hurt Winter, which eventually affects Aida too. Once the danger escalates, with both Winter and Aida getting hurt along the way, they both work together to try to resolve these attacks.

The unlikely couple of sweet, but independent Aida; and Winter, the gorgeous hunk, whom most people were afraid of, was the main part of the story.  It was fun to watch them together, the witty comments between them, and their sexual scenes, which created sparks throughout.  Each were totally in denial about their true feelings, due to their past issues.  Aida, having lost her family at a young age, was totally alone and survived on her measly salary as a spirit medium.  Winter, lost his mother, father and wife to a tragic car accident years before; not to mention being in a loveless marriage, makes him avoid any kind of relationship.

The second half of the book was very exciting, with the non stop action, danger and the race to survive the magical curse aiming to destroy them.  The mystery was tense, but also a bit confusing trying to understand the Chinese unrest, and bootlegger war.  Bennett kept us on our toes, and it wasn’t until the very end did we discover who was indeed behind the mystery.  Despite all the mystery, action and danger, it is the romance between Aida and Winter that made this book fun to read.  It was a different type of romance, though very hot, it had it humor that made it so enjoyable.  Jenn Bennett’s writing style is very nice.  If you want a hot, steamy romance; a fun flirty couple, and a tense, action filled mystery, with a paranormal twist; then Bitter Spirits is perfect for you.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Monica Murphy returns with her most beloved characters, Drew and Fable, in this eBook original 40,000-word novella that brings her bestselling New Adult series full circle.

Fantasy. How I ended up with NFL player Drew Callahan, the guy every woman wants, is beyond my wildest dreams. All I know is that once he chose me as his one and only, I sure wasn’t looking back. I had past wounds and he showed patience and concern—even taking responsibility for my messed-up kid brother. Now, once again, he’s found a way to blow my mind: an exotic wedding and honeymoon miles and miles away from home. What else could a girl ever ask for?

Reality. Now the honeymoon’s over. Drew’s football schedule takes him on the road constantly, while I need to stay put and look after my brother until he finishes high school—because God knows our sorry excuse for a mother won’t. I know Drew loves me with all his heart, and I’ll always be over the moon about him. This just isn’t how I imagined our life as newlyweds . . . dealing with the distance, missing him all the time. But we’ve gone through hard times before. We can get through this, too, right? We’re Drew and Fable, together forever. At least I hope so. . . .

REVIEW: DREW AND FABLE is the latest storyline (novella) in Monica Murphy’s contemporary, new adult series focusing on twenty something Drew Callahan and Fable. The storyline advances the series four years as we watch our leading couple fall deeper in love while contemplating their future.

The premise follows Drew as he embarks on his professional football career as a quarterback for the San Franciso Forty Niners. While Drew is away, Fable must learn to live as a professional athlete’s wife-always the focus of gossip and the paparazzi, Drew and Fable will be forced into the spotlight on more than one occasion.

Fable’s brother Owen plays a more significant role in this particular novel in preparation for his upcoming storyline to be released later in 2014. At the end of the book, Owen will be in his second year of college and becomes a more integral part of Drew and Fable’s life. And Drew and Fable’s life is to about to become a lot more busy.

Monica Murphy has written an emotional storyline that will answer many questions; close some doors and open several others. For fans of the series, Drew and Fable Forever is the perfect story with just the right amount of sensuality, love and happily ever after.

excerpt

“We should check out Ocean Avenue tomorrow,” Drew whispers close to my ear, amusement tingeing his deep voice.

“What? Are you serious?” Even though I’ve come to terms with being here, it doesn’t mean I want to linger and make it a serious vacation. Besides, Drew needs to get back home so he can resume practice.

“Well yeah, remember the spot where we kissed?” His eyes are warm as they search my face, filled with so much love I feel my heart swell.

“Yes,” I whisper achingly. “Of course I remember.”

“I want to go back there.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, his index finger lingering on my skin. “I want to kiss you again in that little alley and remember how wet we were from the rain. How nervous I was. I was scared you might reject me.”

I’d felt the same way. We’d dealt with much of the same feelings and fears and hadn’t even known it.

“I want to take you to that store where you got the dress that just about killed me and buy you whatever you want,” he continues, his fingers drifting across my jaw. My eyes flutter closed as memories rush back at me. “I want to sit outside the dressing room and have you come out to show me every single thing you’re trying on.”

That he remembers all the little details sends a thrill of pleasure spiraling to the very depths of my soul.

“And then I want to wander off for a bit and let you do whatever you want, secretly hoping that you’ll send me a text that says marshmallow. Though if you don’t that’s okay because I’ll send you one instead.” He offers up a crooked smile and the sight of it cracks my heart wide open, overflowing with so much pure love for him I want to cry. “Because we made a deal. Whenever we see or hear that word, the other comes running. I’ll always be the one to rescue you, Fable. You never have to worry about that.”

BEFORE JAMAICA LANE (On Dublin Street #3) by Samantha Young

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 7, 2014

One simple lesson in seduction between two friends can turn into so much more…

Despite her outgoing demeanor, Olivia is painfully insecure around the opposite sex—usually, she can’t get up the nerve to approach guys she’s interested in. But moving to Edinburgh has given her a new start, and, after she develops a crush on a sexy postgrad, she decides it’s time to push past her fears and go after what she wants.

Nate Sawyer is a gorgeous player who never commits, but to his close friends, he’s as loyal as they come. So when Olivia turns to him with her relationship woes, he offers to instruct her in the art of flirting and to help her become more sexually confident.

The friendly education in seduction soon grows into an intense and hot romance. But then Nate’s past and commitment issues rear their ugly heads, and Olivia is left broken-hearted. When Nate realizes he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he will have to work harder than he ever has before to entice his best friend into falling back in love with him—or he may lose her forever…

••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BEFORE JAMAICA LANE is the third full-length instalment in Samantha Young’s contemporary, new adult, erotic ON DUBLIN STREET series focusing on a close knit group of family, friends and lovers in Edinburgh, Scotland. This is American-born Olivia Holloway and Nate Sawyer’s storyline-one that made me cry for a woman who considered herself less than worthy of a man’s love. When Olivia approaches her best friend Nate for help in the seduction department he jumps at the chance to help-but of course-when two people are attracted to one another, playing with fire will only get them burned.

The storyline focuses on Olivia’s reluctance to approach a sexy postgrad who is her current crush. Her lack of self-esteem and negative self image perpetuates the belief that she is unattractive to the opposite sex. Asking her best friend Nate for help in seducing the object of her affections begins to backfire when their friends with benefits policy and instructions becomes something more. Not only does Olivia realize she is in love with Nate but Nate’s heartbreaking rejection throws Olivia into a depression that will be difficult to overcome. Nate is a player and his inability to commit to one woman will bring pain and sorrow to two people who need to overcome the past to more forward.

The relationship between Olivia and Nate begins as best friends to lovers when Olivia’s lack of confidence forces her to ask the impossible of the one man in her life that has always been there. You know that the ‘lessons in sexual seduction’ involve the physical act of sex but the heart doesn’t know what the mind has been told. Keeping the relationship from growing into something ‘more’ is impossible when the heart wants what it can never have.

Samantha Young brings together all of the previous storyline characters. BEFORE JAMAICA LANE slightly overlaps the events of the novella CASTLE HILL where Joss and Braden get married and the epilogue continues eighteen months into the future. The series will fast forward into Hannah and Marco’s storyline-FALLING FROM INDIA PLACE in June 2014.

This is a friends to lovers storyline that will break your heart for two people afraid to open their hearts to the possibilities of finding their happily ever after –together. Nate will push away the woman that he loves only to realize he may have pushed too far.

BEFORE JAMAICA LANE is a seductive, sexy and heartbreaking storyline about two people who are perfect for one another but past losses prevent each from moving forward. Samantha Young pulls the reader into an emotional tale about love and loss; heartbreak and sorrow; friendships and family. Keep the tissue box near by –you are going to need it.

REVIEW: AWAKEN is the third and final instalment in Nina Lane’s contemporary, new adult, erotic and sensually seductive Spiral of Bliss series focusing on Professor Dean West and the love of his life, his soul and his heart Olivia (aka Beauty) West. It is a storyline about two people, who love beyond words; who feel beyond pain; and who know that- without the other- their lives would be meaningless and without hope.

AWAKEN is a story about one man’s journey to prove that he is not the sum total of the accusations against him-but that he is the person that he is because of the woman he loves. Dean is no stranger to loss or pain, but the fear of losing Olivia throws Dean into a world of heartbreaking sorrow and a decision that will put an end to the devastation and pain that has entangled their lives. As Olivia begins to move forward with her independence, Dean’s life begins to spiral out of control.

The relationship between Dean and Olivia is sensual, erotic, provocative and moving. Dean’s love for Olivia is beyond comprehension; beyond arousing; beyond alluring. He is a man possessed by one woman and that woman owns Dean-body and soul. She is the innocence to his experience; the drug to his addiction; the light to his dark. Dean and Olivia’s relationship is passionate, heartbreaking and intense. We watch as a true romantic hero guides his innocent beauty into a world that is grace, imaginative and stirring. Every woman could only hope that there is a man as compelling and provocative in their future or their life.

Nina Lane has written a series that will captivate and awaken your mind to the possibilities of true love; soul-mates; and a love ever lasting.

AWAKEN and the Spiral of Bliss is a sensually stimulating series where two people come together in an exotic tale that will AROUSE, ALLURE and AWAKEN your mind.

Congratulations to Nina Lane. Spiral of Bliss is one of the most seductive series I have had the pleasure to read. You caught my attention with Arouse and awakened a dormant part of my soul. I can’t stress enough how the series and your writing has opened up my mind to the endless possibilities of what ifs and maybes; to the reality of love; and the allure of the romantic storyline-that I will never forget.

Catching Up with C.L. Wilson

Catching Up with C.L. Wilson

CL WilsonThe Reading Cafe is thrilled to have C.L. Wilson as our guest today.  Having loved her Tairen Soul series, many of our members have been waiting for her next novel.  Today Cheryl is here to discuss her upcoming new release The Winter King, as well as answering some of our questions regarding our heroes from the Fading Lands.

Let’s catch up with C.L. Wilson (also known as Cheryl to us die hard fans).

Hi, Cheryl.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Café to discuss what you are currently working on and what we have to look forward to.

TRC:  What was your reaction to the phenomenal success of your Fading Lands series?  Did you expect such a response?

fading lands

C.L.:  No, I really didn’t.  The overwhelmingly positive response came as such a surprise and such a boost.  And a little scary too, because with each successive book I was worried about disappointing people who’d been waiting (and already coming up with their own ideas of what should happen).

But, I have to say, I am so lucky to have so many wonderful people supporting me and my books.  I’m truly grateful—especially for everyone who has been patiently waiting for my next book.  After the end of CROWN, I went through a couple of pretty tough years, and I needed the down time to spend with my family and refill the well.

I am back to writing on a very regular basis now, and am actually doing more writing faster than I ever have before – without spending all day every day chained to the computer, so I’m super happy about that.  My focus the last few years has been to find a balance I can live with, and I think I’ve come up with something that will work for the long run.

The Winter KingTRC:  Your diehard fans have been waiting to find out when we can expect your next book, The Winter King.  We are thrilled to note that you do have a date…. August, 2014.  Will you please give us a brief description about the premise of Tthe Winter King?

C.L. I love this book.  It was so much fun to write.  I actually started writing it after finishing TAIREN SOUL (my manuscript which became LORD OF THE FADING LANDS and LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS).  I wasn’t having much luck getting editors to take a chance on my manuscript, so I decided to start something a bit smaller in scope and a little more focused on the romance than the fantasy.  I set it aside once TAIREN SOUL sold, and didn’t get back to it until after I finished CROWN.

Anyways, to answer your question, THE WINTER KING is set in a world of weathermages and is about a fierce king from the North and the wild, rebellious Southern princess he takes as his bride.

Wynter Atrialan, the Winter King, once lived in peace with his southern, Summerlander neighbors, but when the prince of Summerlea steals Wynter’s bride and murders his young brother, Wynter calls upon a dangerous Wintercraig magic called the Ice Heart and marches against Summerlea.

After three bitter years of battle, a victorious Wynter arrives at Summerlea’s royal palace to issue his terms of surrender. The prince of Summerlea stole Wynter’s bride and slew Wynter’s Heir. He wants the loss replaced. The Ice Heart is consuming him. Wynter hopes holding his own child in his arms will rekindle the warmth in his heart before he becomes the monster of Wintercraig legend, the Ice King.

The Summer King has three very precious daughters whom he loves dearly. Wynter will take one of them to wife. She will have one year to provide him with an Heir. If she fails, he will send her to face the mercy of the mountains and claim another princess for his wife. And so it will continue until Wynter has his Heir or the Summer King is out of daughters.

The plan is perfect—except for one small detail. The Summer King has a fourth daughter. One of which he is not so fond. And she is a fiercely passionate creature, with a temper as volatile as the forces of her weathergift, the power of storms.

The book has a very Norse/Ragnarok feel to it, and I love the sparks that fly between Khamsin (the heroine) and Wynter (the hero).  He is truly scrumptious (I can’t write a book if I don’t fall madly in love with the hero), and Khamsin was a lot of fun.  I love how well they mesh together.

Link to preorder The Winter King: Amazon / Barnes & Noble

TRC:  Is The Winter King a standalone book, or will this be a new series?

C.L.: It’s a standalone book, but I’m hoping to write other books set in the same world, featuring different characters.

TRC:  At some point, you discussed going back to the Fading Lands and doing stories on two of your heroes…Belliard and Gaelen.  Is this your plan?  Will we go back to the Fading Lands?

one enchanted seasonC.L.:  Oh, yes.  Bel’s book was my NaNoWriMo project this year.  I had to set him aside to finish up my novella the for the magical holiday anthology, ONE ENCHANTED SEASON, that I self-published with my friends and fellow authors, Erica Ridley & Elissa Wilds.  But I’m back to working on Bel’s book already.  It’s so great to be back in the Fading Lands, and I’m having the best time seeing things have changed since the end of the second Mage War.

And—whew!  There are definitely some interesting times in Dharsa these days!  Poor Bel.  He isn’t going to know what hit him! LOL.

TRC:  Would you like to share with us on what you are currently working and what else you have planned for the future?

C.L.:  Well, Bel’s book will probably take a good bit of next year to write (I actually can write initial drafts relatively fast now—for me—but revising still slows me way down).  While I’m working on Bel’s book, I’m also going to be working on a second Weathermages of Mystral book.  While writing THE WINTER KING, two characters jumped up and demanded that I tell their story.  I’m not actually sure which book will come out first, but rest assured, Bel’s book is in the works! 🙂

After that, well, Gaelen vel Serranis has been incredibly (and surprisingly) patient, but I have a feeling he won’t be patient for much longer!  I am really, really looking forward to his book!

And of course, I’ll be checking in on Lillis and Lorelle, Kieran and Kiel, and Nicolene, Melliandra and the babies in both Bel & Gaelen’s books. 🙂

TRC: This is very exciting news for all of us who have fallen in love with your wonderful characters of the Fading Lands.

TRC:  You have open a new site for all of your Fading Lands fans known as Tairen’s Lair which is an online resource for Tairen Soul merchandise. How did you come up with the ideas for the merchandise?

C.L.:  After the first two Tairen Soul books came out, wildlife artist Heather Carr picked them up.  She saw the tairen on the back cover of LORD OF THE FADING LANDS and was intrigued because, when she was in high school, she used to enjoy drawing & painting bat-winged jaguars (ie, tairen before I called them tairen J).  She contacted me, showed me her fabulous art, and started painting other scenes from my books.  Tairen’s Lair (www.tairenslair.com) grew from that.   She and I work together to decide what merchandise to offer, etc.  We also host a booth at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA every year over the Labor Day weekend, and since Heather’s in Denver, we’re starting to attend the Denver conventions as well.

Our newest (and bestselling) items are tairen plushies – stuffed tairen toys.  We did a limited edition of Hallah (sold out), and now have Ellysetta-Azreisa and Rainier-Eras tairen.  We’re hoping to do a Steli sometime soon, too.

I’d like to get some new T-shirts made with the Tairen’s Lair logo, which I love.  And the Steli “I take mine roasted” coffee mugs are currently on sale.

You can find some of these fabulous official C.L. Wilson merchandise, featuring art, gifts, t-shirts and more based on scenes and characters from the Fading Lands novels.

Here is the link to check out these items:  http://tairenslair.com/

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

C.L.:  Just that I am so appreciative of all my fans and readers.  I really hope you will enjoy THE WINTER KING, and I hope to have good news on my next book soon!  In the meantime, I hope my readers will pick up my self-published anthology of magical holiday romances, ONE ENCHANTED SEASON, which features my novella Upon a Midnight.  Upon a Midnight is about the absolutely yummiest Guardian Angel ever to flutter a wing, and the mortal Lightkeeper he was created to love and protect.  I really enjoyed writing it, and I hope my readers will enjoy it too!  It’s available in digital format and trade paperback.  And it features a bonus sneak peek at THE WINTER KING!

Thanks so much, Barb, and everyone at the Reading Café, for inviting me to do this interview.  Ya’ll are the best!

Cheers, and Miora Felah (joyful life!)

TRC:  Thank you, Cheryl for giving us an update on “The Winter King”, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.   It was a pleasure having you visit us.  We look forward to your return to The Reading Cafe in August to help promote The Winter King.

C.L.:  I look forward to seeing you again then 🙂

Fine Tuning Hanna by Tiina Walsh-Review and Interview with the Author

Fine Tuning Hanna

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date

Would saying the magic words ‘I love you’ in time have stopped it all going so wrong for Hanna? Or was some other power at play? Finnish piano-tuner Hanna Suvanto loves her new life and friends in Dublin. And the icing on the cake is meeting Ireland’s premium bachelor, the personal development guru, Sebastian O’Reilly. But their whirlwind romance hits a serious obstacle when Hanna’s stay is unexpectedly cut short. Sebastian seems strangely unconcerned about her departure – and then Hanna makes a shocking discovery about the man she thought she knew. Heartbroken and disillusioned with love, she returns to Finland, resolving to rebuild her life. Back in Ireland, Sebastian can’t get Hanna out of his mind. Surely there is more to her abrupt departure than meets the eye?

REVIEW:

Fine Tuning Hanna is a 282 page good read! It’s a great love story with many interesting well written secondary characters.

Hanna Suvanto is a pretty Finnish young woman, working in Ireland. She is a piano technician, mostly tuning pianos for concert halls. She meets and falls madly in love (and her with her) with a positive thinking speaker, Sebastian O’Reilly (God, I love that name! – LOL). Our author gives us a wonderful story with great scenery, wonderful scenes of love and friendships, while teaching us about positive thinking theory. Very interesting stuff!

They have a whirlwind wonderful time, while the deadline for her to return to Finland ticks away. Then a spiteful woman brings the thing to a seeming halt…resulting in heartache, confusion for Sebastian, and so much more. Will they reconcile? Will love be thwarted? Ahhh….

Fine Tuning Hanna is an interesting mix of learning cultural differences, positive thinking theory, friendships and love. There are, of course, the elements of heat-break and redemption! An interesting and intriguing rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, betrayal, and ultimate friendship.

I don’t do spoilers, because you need to read the wonderful details as the author unfolds the story to you. I’m not sure if this is the author’s first book, but it’s well done and I thoroughly enjoyed the story, shed a few tears, laughed out loud and found my heart pounding a few times! What else is there?
Get a nice glass of wine or your favorite beverage, cuddle up and enjoy, I did!

Interview

TRC: Hi Tiina and welcome to The Reading Cafe.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website/ Facebook/ Twitter

Tiina WalshTiina: I grew up in Finland but when I was 19, I moved to Ireland, fell in love with an Irishman and have lived in Ireland for the past 16 years. My native language is Finnish. I own and run several companies in the real estate sector in Finland and Ireland, which involves traveling back and forward between the two countries a lot. I have always wanted to be a writer, and finally realized my dream of becoming a published author in 2013.

TRC: FINE TUNING HANNA is your August 2013 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Tiina: The book tells the story of Hanna, a Finnish female piano tuner working in Ireland. She falls in love with a famous Irish personal development coach, Sebastian. After the initial romance, things go badly wrong, Hanna goes back to Finland heartbroken, leaving Sebastian baffled by her abrupt departure. But since it’s a romance, there is a happy ending for the couple!

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration behind the characters and the storyline?

Tiina: To some extent, the main character of Hanna is based on me – although it’s my husband who is a piano tuner / player in real life! A lot of the cultural observations about the Finns and the Irish are based on my own experiences. Both myself and my husband are very keen on personal development, hence it was easy to choose Sebastian’s profession ( and he looks quite a lot like my husband…)

Some of the other characters were loosely inspired by some of my friends, yet all characters grew to be their own persons as the story developed.

The storyline itself developed little by little from my initial idea of a Finnish-Irish love story, which incorporated the idea of the main couple at some level not feeling “good enough” for the other one, and both of them having to “grow” during the story to realize that their ideas of themselves were holding them back in achieving a good relationship.

Fine Tuning HannaTRC: How much of the “positive thinking theory” premise is derived from your husband? Do you believe in the power of positive thinking?

Tiina: My husband and I discuss positive thinking ideas a lot, and I confess that I often consult him and his wisdom – he really is very knowledgeable and passionate about positive thinking! And yes, I really do believe in the power of positive thinking, as I have seen endless amount of evidence to support these ideas in my own life, and we both continue to study the topic further all the time.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Tiina: It would make my ego very happy to think I’m the director, but after the initial idea for the storyline, I’m afraid the characters decide what happens next, and I often feel like a mere spectator of the events unfolding – an act very similar to reading, which is my passion in life.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Tiina: Definitely a pantster. I have not learner the art of “looking around the corners” which I presume is what a plotter can do. I have just finished the manuscript of my second book and this, as well as FINE-TUNING HANNA, was written entirely in a pantster mode. But saying that, I have a great idea for my third book, and I have a feeling that some plotting will be required- I don’t know, as I haven’t started it yet!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Tiina: The writer must concentrate really hard in feeling and listening to the character, in order to bring the characters’ true emotions alive – only if they ring true, will the reader be engaged. Rushing the storyline and not editing the book enough times to catch more details of the situations unfolding, will make the emotional state of the characters feel too shallow to engage the reader.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Tiina: My beautiful characters keep me on my toes! And my excellent editor…

TRC: How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of deadlines?

Tiina: I have a lot of anxiety and deadlines in my day job, so I don’t really feel any anxiety in regards to writing. But then again, as a self-published author, I get to choose what I do and when – one of the reasons why I chose to go down this path. The plan is to publish a book a year, which I believe to be achievable to me, since I love being a (evening time) writer so much.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Tiina: Tough question! Perhaps the fact that some people seem to think that as a non-native English speaker/writer, I shouldn’t be able to write books in English. If only they knew the amount of English text I “devour” all the time…

TRC: Writers Block is a very real phenomenon for many authors. How do you handle the stress and anxiety of Writers Block?

Tiina: I just don’t write when I don’t feel like it – I can’t say I have felt the Block, but it’s probably because I only write when the Muse takes me.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with family, friends and fellow authors. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Tiina: I bounce ideas with my husband and my best friend, who is a famous Irish harpist – a true artist. Funnily enough, neither of them are great readers,
yet extremely insightful when it comes to the story format.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Tiina: I’m working at the ideas level of my third book, and I’m excited and terrified in equal measures about starting the book in early 2014. This is going to be my biggest challenge yet, and I sincerely hope I’m good enough to bring the book alive.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Tiina: Thank you for this opportunity! I have enjoyed thinking about your questions.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 14, 2013

Reclusive millionaire Garth Joseph Smits Simmons wants to be loved for himself, not his bankbook or the prestige that being married to him would carry. Shunning publicity and gold-diggers, he’s spent the last few years wearing one disguise or another to protect his identity. When beautiful, talented special events coordinator Eleni Baxter walks into his life, he’s determined to find a way to make her fall in love with him without revealing his true identity.

Avoiding relationships because of her twin sister’s heartbreak, Eleni has thrown herself into her wedding and party fantasy firm, Holiday Magic. When her design for a Halloween Extravaganza wins a contract as exclusive special events coordinator for the Ocean Front Casino Resort, she sees it as her ticket to the big times. What adds to the contract’s appeal is her attraction to handsome casino manager Joe Smits. Can a relationship built on deceit succeed?

REVIEW:

The Perfect Choice (Book 2 of Holiday Magic series) is Eleni and Joe’s story. I had the privilege of reviewing Holiday Magic (Georgia and Mark’s story) and totally fell in love with the characters and everything in the story.

Susanne Matthews has written another wonderful love story and I can’t even tell you how compelling it was…well…I couldn’t put it down, so was up til the wee hours of the morning; maybe that gives you some idea!

Eleni is a great character, lovely and very intelligent, she wants to be successful with her designs and wants other to see she’s not just another pretty face that can plan a party. Her imaginative designs for events go beyond the norm. She is given an opportunity by the Dean of Moore College of Arts and Design, the college to which she was an alumna, to design an original Halloween Charity Event for the Ocean Front Casino.

She had just taken her drawings of her ideas to the dean and was on her way home when she met Joe, who was listening to a street jazz musician (one of her personal favorites). He was wearing an old rock-tee and torn jeans, really pretty scruffy looking and she thought he was a down and out young man. Being Eleni (friendly and open) she showed him where he could get a free/cheap meal (this is more involved, but I don’t want to spoil your reading experience). The attraction was mutual on both their parts and quite unusual!

So, of course Joe turns out to b Garth Joe Smits Simmons, the owner of the Ocean Front Casino and so much more…he’s actually umber rich (the part of the story is interesting as well). He doesn’t get a chance to learn her whole name only that her sister is named Georgia and owns a jewelry design store in New York. In the meantime, he sees her designs scanned and sent to him by the dean and falls in love with the ideas and sends a contract for E. Baxter to the dean.

Meanwhile he intends to hunt for the lovely blonde he just met. So imagine his surprise when he looks up E. Baxter in the college database and finds Eleni!
That’s the setup; I’m not going to get into the complications of this fantastic relationship..that would just give too much away. Just let me tell you this is a very well written and unusual love story. The timeline runs parallel with Holiday Magic, and we get to see some of what happened with Georgia from another point of view.

The Perfect Choice is a fast-paced, intelligent and incredibly fun read and well titled. I absolutely hated for it to end, but I did need to go to bed…ah, sleep is over rated anyway! I so look forward to more fun, thrilling stories from Suzanne Matthews. Enjoy everyone, I did!

REVIEW

5 out for 5 for this reader folks!

Well that different! Really good different, in comparison to my normal preferred genres, but that is what I love about reading … there is always a new discovery just around the corner! Charmed Memories by Mary Waibel is the second book of her Princess of Valendria series (I reviewed her first book called Quest of the Hart here at TRC). Again, what a vivid world she creates and I felt like Mary Poppins being dragged into the art scene and inserted into colour, love and happiness (wrong era I know, but that is what came to mind … LOL) I smiled often reading this book! Don’t be fooled though .. this story isn’t just fluff. There is mystery, intrigue and suspenseful moments, vengeful people and betrayal. This with all the happy .. well it makes one great read!

So our main man is Prince Trevor. Trevor is the brother to the heroine in the first book of this series. Trevor has lost his betrothed Princess Elsbeth at sea, but refuses to believe that she has perished. He searches and searches and even after many years he still clings to hope and is honour bound to believe she is not dead! He ends up being assisted by a Woodland guide named Lady Bri.

Lady Bri, just so happens to suffers from amnesia. She does know that this magnificent Prince Trevor takes another little piece of her heart as their journey to find Elsbeth begins to unravel. She shows all her flaws (as does he) and lays it all out while Trevor is clueless half the time ( but he comes around) and soon the conflict of a doomed love comes to surface. Trevor does suspect at times that Bri is Elsbeth but you know I am not going to be letting that cat out of the bag .. so pick up the book! 😉

I felt like I went on a world wide tour reading this book. The clues that both Trevor and Bri had to follow and figure out were engaging leaving me to ponder and guess what was next … not always predictable, which I LOVE! There was deadly action waiting, slight humour, and all around two great people who I found myself rooting for. Another thing I am going to gush about is while this story is immersed in fantasy land, their was a believability to the characters that enabled me that cherished connect I love to have with the characters.

I have young readers in my home, and I am shelfing this book for a future mom/daughter read together! I can predict us loving different aspects of the same story!

HAPPY READING! 🙂
