VENDETTA by Sienna Lane and Autumn Karr

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 17, 2013

I am not a good man.

I have lied and cheated and stolen. I’ve decided between life or death, like it was my due. None of it matters, not anymore. These are not my sins.

I see her raise her hands, the dark metal she’s clutching reflecting the moonlight. Her finger trembles as she cocks the gun pointed at me. Her eyes are cold, determined, but I know.

I know her.

My name is Devon Andre and I confess my sin. I am not a good man because this is the woman I love.

She pulls the trigger.

* Standalone contemporary romance.
* Mature reader advised due to sexual content and strong language.

REVIEW: VENDETTA is a new adult, contemporary, stand alone romance storyline co-authored by Sienna Lane and Autumn Karr. The premise focuses on two twenty something adults-Devon Andre and Leighton Moore-the prodigy and heirs of two mob bosses whose families have been at war for generations. When Devon’s parents and younger brother were killed leaving the thirteen year old Devon an orphan, he pledged that one day he would take everyone in the Moore family down. Only he did not realize that fate and love would play a hand in his future with Leighton Moore.

VENDETTA is a storyline that traverses between a contemporary Romeo and Juliet; with a side of Goodfellas and a little bit of the Sopranos. This is a story where forbidden love will play a role in the life and death situation that encompasses Leighton as she is held prisoner by the Andre family and more accurately Devon Andre-himself.

The storyline is slow to develop; as the relationship between Devon and Leighton builds –there is something akin to Stockholm Syndrome-where a prisoner emotionally bonds or falls in love with his or her captors. The reader is not privy to much of the background information and connection between our leading couple, who definitely have some sort of past, and in this the storyline and their relationship is slightly confusing. It is only when the truth is finally revealed that the reader will have the ‘ah-ha’ moment of realization.

VENDETTA is told from alternating first person POV between Devon Andre and Leighton Moore. The reader is pulled into the minds of two young people, who by birth, are forced into a world that neither one wants or wishes to control. There is some graphic imagery as it pertains to violence and death, as well as, some non-consensual sexual situations.

Autumn Karr and Sienna Lane have twisted the tale of Romeo and Juliet but unlike the original, our couple do get their happily ever after. There is an epilogue, of sorts, that focuses six months in the future, but I would have felt more of a connection if we were privy to what transpired during the ensuing time.

If you like a story of forbidden love with a bit of a twist then VENDETTA is the read for you.

excerpt

LEIGHTON
I stiffen the moment he walks through the door, his eyes pinning me as soon as he locks it shut. He’s carrying a bag of food in his hands, and places it on the table along with his car keys as he makes his way over to where I’m sitting on the chair. He smells faintly of cigar, mixed with his spicy cologne. Even with all the mixed emotions I’m feeling right now, the anger and the pain, I still want him. I’ll always want him.

“I brought something you will definitely like this time,” he says in greeting, flashing me a grin. His mood seems lighter than before he left, which makes me even madder because there he is, grinning playfully while I’m hours away from being taken away.

Vendetta Quote imageHe pulls out his phone, then quickly checks the screen and shuts it off, putting it back in his pocket. I’ve never seen him bring a phone in here before. A plan starts to form in my head. If only I could get my hands on that phone, everything would be so much easier. I could call someone to let them know where I am, to come and get me while I’m still here.

“I’ll eat later.” I stand up from the bed and take a step closer to him. I place both of my hands flat on his hard chest, and give him a sultry look. “I have something else I want right now,” I say, looking pointedly down his body.

His green eyes narrow to slits, turning heavy-lidded. “Is that right?” he asks, already pulling his shirt off with both hands, sliding it over his head and revealing his sculpted abs and toned chest. One glance at his body is all it takes.

My eyes linger on the indentation of his hips, that sexy V I love to run my tongue across. I lick my bottom lip, anticipation and lust taking over my senses. He undoes the button on his jeans, but then stops there. I lift my head up, giving him a curious look.

“I want to see you,” is all he says, his eyes never leaving mine

Description:
Hell is looking for a way to break loose…

Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world’s first murderer, he’s plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it’s killing him.

After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can’t outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she’s thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she’s been trying to forget.

Sam strains Jax’s control over his darkness, but running isn’t an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge
Review:

Ruined by Jus Accardo is the first book in her new Eternal Balance series.  Lately I have read a lot of stories about Angels and Demons.  Ruined is mostly about demons or tainted (humans and demons sharing the same body), but this story is totally different than most, as the bases of the story revolves around Good & Evil, or Cain and Abel.

We meet our flawed hero Jax, as he returns home to visit his dying uncle. Jax considers himself the unlucky one, cursed with being a descendant of the world’s first murderer, Cain. He lives with another being inside him, a demon named Azirak.  Jax left town a few years back to protect Samantha, the girl he loved, from danger of his fierce anger, that is part of him.  But now that he is back, it all starts again, as he sees Samantha talking to his brother Chase, who is the one everyone loves.

Before he has a chance to leave town again, Samantha’s life is now in danger, as she has been marked by a demon.  Jax has to fight his feelings for Sam, at the same time find out why and who is targeting her.  Together, he and Sam try to resolve this, and at same time not act on their raging sexual chemistry.  Making things difficult is Jax needs to keep his demon under control and fed.  Easier said then done, especially with the demon side showing interest in Sam.  The other thorn is Chase’s continued interest in Sam, and his ability to create havoc against his brother.

As for Sam, she tries to understand why Jax left originally, but she knows she loves him.  When she begins to understand the truth about demons, and Jax’s violent mood swings; Sam is still determined to find a way to save Jax, at any cost.

When I first started this book, I was not sure if it would keep my attention, as it was a bit  perhaps redundant, with Jax constantly being angry, and talking to his demon or being nasty to Sam.  He wasn’t very likable, and you sort of thought you knew why the town hated him.  I though never liked Chase from the start. But about a third of the way in, the story got very exciting, with lots of action, which kept me anxiously turning the pages.  We learn more about the curse, Jax, his demon, and Sam.

The ending of this book was revealing with some twists, and just when I was somewhat relieved and starting to relax, Jus Accardo throws us for loop with a damn cliffhanger.  Oh well this is a series, and their will always be good versus evil.  If you like action, suspense, demons, violence, good vs evil, hot sex, heartbreak and a couple that are truly in love, than Ruined is for you

A Princess In Hiding – Book 2

Description:
Three intrepid princesses find themselves targets in a deadly plot against the crown—       until their uncle devises a brilliant plan to keep them safe…

Of all her sisters, Princess Stefanie is by far the least amenable to law and order, which is why she’s appalled to find herself masquerading as an unbearably drab clerk for the most   honorable barrister in England. But her dull disguise turns out to have its privileges:           namely, the opportunity to consort unchaperoned with her employer’s exceedingly             handsome nephew, James Lambert, the Marquess of Hatherfield.

Hatherfield quickly realizes that his uncle’s spirited new clerk is, in fact, a lovely young    woman of daring habits. The outwardly impeccable marquis isn’t about to reveal her deception. After all, he’s hiding a dangerous secret of his own. But when one too many       escapades with the madcap princess bring Hatherfield’s troubled past to light, it is only      Stefanie’s sharp wits that stand between the marquis and utter disaster, and only   Hatherfield’s daring that can save the princess from the shadowy agents bent on finding   her.

Review:

How to Master Your Marquis by Juliana Gray is the second book in her historical romance, A Princess in Hiding series.  If you have not read my review of the first book, the premise of the series is about three sisters (Louisa, Stefanie and Emilie), who are princesses on the run from a plot to overthrow their German principality crown, as their father has been killed.  Their uncle, the Duke of Olympia, puts together a plan to separate them in disguise, until it is safe.  How to Master Your Marquis belongs to Stefanie, the youngest sister, who is sent to England in disguise as a young man, to work for a barrister as a law clerk.

Stefanie, always the wild child getting into constant trouble, finds herself in a boring situation, until she meets the gorgeous hunk, James Hatherfield, the Marquis of the title.  Hatherfield finds himself unusually attracted to the meek Mr. Thomas, but it doesn’t take long for Hatherfield to know that underneath it all, lies a woman.  Not knowing why, he doesn’t let on that he knows.  In time, both Stefanie and James begin to become closer, and eventually fall in love.  What is great about Juliana Gray, she takes romance stories a step above the normal historical.  There is the normal romance, intrigue, wonderful couple, very steamy sex; but what is different, is the humor she uses throughout the story.

I got of kick out of watching Hatherfield try to hide his feelings for Stefanie, and how other people perceived this to be him falling for another man.  The witty remarks from Mr Thomas/Stefanie or Hatherfield had us laughing quite a few times.  With that aside, this is a wonderful romance, and I loved Hatherfield and Stefanie together, not to mention the sexual chemistry between them was hot.  The focus of the story is that Stefanie is in hiding to protect her life, and when a murder happens, it is Hatherfield who will do what it takes to protect her, even if it costs his own life.

I don’t want to give spoilers, only to say that this is a sweet and fun story, with a fabulous and fun romance; it is also an exciting story, that had you turning the pages to see what happens, as well as pray that somehow they would find a way to salvage their love for each other. Gray also does an excellent job of creating excellent secondary characters that add to the believability of the story, including an evil conniving bitch, who wants James for herself.

How to Master Your Marquis is a wonderful addition to this great series.  Juliana Gray    gives us a beautiful sexy romance, an exciting mystery and such delightful fun.  Don’t          miss this one.

Why I Decided To Write A Serial
By Sawyer Bennett

Serials can be frustrating to some readers. Me personally? What bugs me about them is the waiting time between releases and wondering when the end will come. So I kept that in mind when I launched into Legal Affairs and decided to release them quickly, cheaply and with a definite ending.

I wanted to try a new project, coming off the heels of the Off Series which was very successful. I had a very specific formula in mind… sexy + funny. I also wanted to try my hand at writing a legal themed book since I’m a lawyer by first trade. With this new formula, I thought… “Why not try a serial, where I could make each volume like an episode of ‘must see TV’ where you had a single story line that was actually part of a bigger picture?”

Legal Affairs was soon born of those thoughts. I decided to limit the series to just six volumes, each about 12,000 words or so, with the series finale coming in at just over 17,000 words. I bumped up the heat factor, so beware… this is hotter than the Off Series. I blushed when my mom read it. Blushed again when the lawyers in my firm read it.

Overall, I loved how it turned out. I felt I was able to convey a realistic struggle between the hero and heroine, with each volume having a true conflict that was resolved for that particular story line, but still made you wonder if they would get their HEA in the end.

More than anything, Legal Affairs is a test of sorts. I wanted to see how well I could mesh my knowledge of the law into a steamy romance. My hope is that if Legal Affairs is successful, I will do a full length novel series with a similar theme. Maybe a law firm filled with sexy, quirky lawyers that may be a bit unethical but in the end want justice for their clients. I’ll add in plenty of snark, humor… and oh, yeah… hot sex!! Think of it as Sex In The City meets Ally McBeal.

FINDING MY FOREVER (The Beaumont Series #3) by Heidi McLaughlin

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 30, 2013

Everywhere I look, my friends are settling down – marriage, children, white picket fences; but not me. Marriage isn’t in the cards for me. I’m a ladies man.

A rock star.

I was born and raised in the industry.

I love everything about my life, especially the attention from the women that my status brings me.

Women find me. I don’t chase. I know what they want and they know I’ll deliver.

But after one look, one touch, one night…
Now I’m the one doing the chasing.

I need to find a way to show her that I’m serious, that I can change.
I need to find a way to show her that I can love her fully, and only her.
I need to find a way to show her that she’s my forever.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FINDING MY FOREVER is the third full length storyline in Heidi McLaughlin’s contemporary, new adult Beaumont Series focusing on the lives and loves of the members of the rock group 4225 West. This is guitarist Jimmy Davis and Jenna Palmer’s story-one that begins with a one night stand following the wedding of 4225 West’s lead singer Liam Page to the love of his life Josie. What begins as a night of passion will pull the band into a world of danger, betrayal and an uncertain future. I would strongly suggest reading this series in order as many of the major players and current timeline stories have been introduced in the previous novels.

The premise focuses on Jimmy as he contemplates the meaning of life-his life precisely- and how everything seems to have become a series of meaningless one night stands and forgotten names. The one constant in his life is Jenna Palmer-the woman with whom he had a night of passion-and has had a difficult time forgetting. While the other band mates move forward with their lives, Jimmy is stuck in an unending stream of nameless women who want nothing more than to sleep with the famous Jimmy Davis. As his mind and heart continue to be pulled towards Jenna Palmer his actions scream something completely different. And it is these actions that push Jenna further away with every encounter.

The relationship between Jenna and Jimmy is quick to build when Jenna’s past comes roaring back -there is no denying the attraction between our leading couple but Jimmy’s womanizing history and Jenna’s past are two major stumbling blocks to their happiness and life ever after.

Heidi McLaughlin has written a story about family and friends and those who will stand behind you when you need them the most. This is a story about two people who are meant to be together but so many others in their lives are constantly trying to pull them apart. And this is also a story about growing up and taking responsibility- knowing it was what you wanted all along but wanting something doesn’t necessarily make it easy. Jenna and Jimmy will stumble, as do many couples and in the end, the biggest obstacle of all may be one that they can never overcome.

FINDING MY FOREVER is s storyline that will make you laugh and make you cry; it is both heartbreaking and heartwarming; and it will make you smile when a man who believes he is not worthy realizes that his heart is big enough for more than one love in his life.

TICK TO THE TOCK by Matthew Turner

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 8, 2014

What would you do if you had three months to live? That’s what Dante King faces, the indecisive twenty-two-year-old who must finally learn to embrace life and love.

Tick to the Tock is a Contemporary New Adult Novel about Dante coming-of-age during turbulent times. A story inspired by love, but with the gritty realities of regret, missed opportunity, and understanding life’s meaning under dire circumstance. But a single mind isn’t affected on this journey, as an eclectic group comes to terms with the past, present, and what lies ahead.

Dante must confront and accept his fate, but can he let go of Danni: his lost love and kindred dreamer? With his rationally stubborn cousin, and eccentric best friend, Dante witnesses a life of dream and wonder: embarking across Europe, tackling Tibet, travelling Australia, and defeating each lifelong wish one-by-one.

Follow this coming-of-age roller coaster as four lives change forever. We’re only given one, but it’s never too late to understand faith, discover acceptance, and uncover the true meaning of love and happiness. Dante will die, but not before Danii, Ethan, Wilbur and he undertake an intense and heartfelt journey.

Smile… Cry… Ask yourself what you would do with three months left… Because Love & Living Begins Now

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TICK TO THE TOCK is a contemporary, new adult stand alone novel that will take you on a journey of reflection for one man as he faces his mortality and the end of life. Twenty two year old Dante King is going to die. An inoperable brain tumor is forcing the young man to take a hard look at life and with it comes the reality of his death. Not wanting to sit at home waiting for the end, Dante embarks on a journey across Europe, Asia and Australia with his two best friends Wil and Ethan and, the woman he so desperately wanted to love.

Matthew Turner has written an amazing piece of literature that will make you think – if you knew you only had three months to live- what would you do and why? Our hero Dante reflects on his short life; his relationship with family and friends; his failures and regrets; the people he knows and loves. And in the end, it is a story about one man as he searches for answers to a question- is this all there is?

We are introduced to Dante’s cousin and best friend Ethan who is more like a parent to our travelling four-some; Wil is the friend who hides his pain behind humor and booze; and Danii-the woman Dante has always loved but has had a difficult time with his emotions and letting go. These four friends will face the future together and one that will be imprinted in their souls forever.

Most of the storyline is a narrative reflection. Told in first person POV from Dante’s perspective the story is a mixture of flashbacks, reflections, memories and regrets but along the way four people will discover that there is more to life than dying-there is surviving and moving forward; living life to the fullest with no regrets because there is nothing we can do about the past. But for one man, there is a second chance at love before he dies and a love that will continue long after his death.

Interview

TRC: Hi Matthew and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of Tick to the Tock.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: Goodreads/ Website/ Blog/ Facebook

Matthew TurnerMatthew: Hello all. Well, my name is Matthew Turner, and I’m a writer from Yorkshire who has a gorgeous 10 month old son. I write a great deal, but I embrace the whole spectrum of Storytelling: working with individuals and brands to help reinvigorate their marketing through the art of story.

My passion is fiction though. This is what excites me the most.

TRC: Please explain the significance of TurnDog Millionaire and what is represents to you?

Matthew: When I set up my company I wanted to stand out (because there are A LOT of Matthew Turners in the world). My nickname growing up was Turndog, so I decided to use this. The whole story behind this can be found here >> http://bit.ly/18Ya3vk << but basically Turndog allows me to use an alter ego when needed, whilst always remaining who I am and what I stand for.

As a bit of an introvert, this certainly helps give me the confidence to attack each day with vigour.

Tick to the TockTRC: TICK TO THE TOCK is your January 2014 release-a contemporary, new adult storyline about one man who is facing the ultimate challenge-to live an die with dignity. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Matthew: Dante is a twenty-two-year-old indecisive guy who has always lived in the future and clung to the past. I think most of us do this, because embracing the moment each and every day is tough. All of a sudden it’s all taken away from Dante though, and he faces a lot of reflection, and a chance to finally live and love before it’s too late.

As such, TICK to the TOCK focusses on the journey he goes through, and the journey the people closest to him do, too.

There are many happy moments in this book, but it surrounds a devastating plot, which, as you can guess, creates a rollercoaster ride throughout. There’s also a romance at its core too, so all of this mingles together in a way that makes the reader think, cry, smile, and think some more (at least, that’s the plan).

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (e.g. logistical, theological, thanatological etc) did you encounter writing this particular novel?

Matthew: It required me to dig deep within myself, and focus on all of the things I haven’t done, as well as those I have: what means the most to me, what I would miss if it was taken away, how I would react, etc…

As a new father, this was tough. I shed a few tears and forced myself to face things head on. All the while, however, this is a story built on romance, so there are many happy times, too. As such, I felt very up and down, smiling and thinking happy thoughts one minute, but then mulling over loss the next.

Also, I’ve never gone through something like this before. I worried each second I wouldn’t do it justice, but I placed myself as deep into the pain as possible and kept faith with my empathy – that it would guide me through. In the end, I think it did. I was able to offer an insight and angle that I believe only I can.

TRC: Did writing Tick to the Tock bring up any personal reflections on your own mortality?

Matthew: Like I say, many many many times. I constantly considered my journey in life, all the times I said yes, all those occasions I said no, and if it was all taken away today, would I have regrets. The truth is I do have regrets, because I think most people do.

We all wish we could be a little more, but at the same time, we need to take pride in the person we become. I think writing TICK to the TOCK helped me see this. In a way, it was a kind of therapy I never expected. A darn right cheaper too, I might add.

TRC: ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER is a six part prequel novella to Tick to the Tock. Would you please tell us something about the premise? Is it required reading to understand the premise and characters in Tick to the Tock?

One Day in September

Matthew: I wouldn’t say it’s required reading, no. I created it so TICK to the TOCK could be enjoyed without reading One Day in September, and vice versa. However, this six part prequel does offer an insight that helps better understand the characters and their history.

Basically, each Part is told from the POV from the four main characters (1 from Ethan, 1 from Danii, 2 from Wilbur, and 2 from Dante). The entire series is set the day before TICK to the TOCK begins, and we see how their lives interweave into one another’s.

I’m fascinated by the idea of serialised fiction, and this is my first attempt at it. I really enjoyed the process, and the feedback has been good. I think it adds a great element to a novel, and I’m delighted to have done it.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in Tick to the Tock, which models or actors would best represent the image your have in mind?

Matthew: With Danii, I started off with Emmy Rossum, but she quickly developed and became her own entity. Emmy had the kind of look I was after though, so I spent quite a while looking at her face, which was no hindrance on my part at all.

As for Dante, I began with Andrew Garfield, but again, he quickly took on his own style and look. I think this is important. You don’t want to focus too much on any one individual. Characters need to become their own people.

TRC: Are any events or characters based on reality or an amalgamation of your imagination and real life?

Matthew: No one character is based on any one person, but each is formed of those around me day-in, day-out (including several aspects of me).

This is how I write. I like to create characters built on who I am, who I wish I was, wish I wasn’t, etc… I’m also a bit of a people watcher (creepy, I know), so am always on the look out for interesting folk. I think some of my friends will read TICK to the TOCK and see where parts of my inspiration came from. I happen to know a few interesting individuals, that is for sure.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Matthew: I think my writing often directs the characters. I start knowing the character well, but after a few weeks I realise how deeper they could be. I suppose it’s a little like cooking or baking. You start with the ingredients, but as you go through the process and taste what you make, you add a little extra this, or a smidgen more of that.

I like this. The characters evolve as they need to… as I discover new aspects of them… as they showcase themselves in a new light. It feels more organic and lifelike this way, and as though they are real people. This certainly helps dig through the tougher aspects of a book, because the people within it are those you love or hate or feel close to.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Matthew: I do this a little, but I mostly like to get lost in my own mind. Feedback from others is helpful after the first draft, but until that point I keep most of my thoughts under wrap. I do like to share my journey online, though. Not the finer details so much, just the insanities of an author.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Matthew: No new Fictional project yet, although I have a few ideas that I will play with in early 2014. I’m not sure what novel three will look like yet, but I’m excited for it.

As for non-fiction, well, I’m working on a project called The Successful Mistake. It involves me interviewing 250 entrepreneurs about the mistakes they have made, and how they’ve overcome them. It’s been a mind blowing project so far. Truly life changing!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Matthew: Just that I’d like to thank you for having me, and thank the readers for reading.

I’m not sure if TICK to the TOCK will be your cup of tea, but I hope you’ll join my journey on Facebook (search for MatthewTurner.Writer) because I love meeting new people. Who knows, you may be the next interesting and quirky character in my work 🙂
