ABOUT THE BOOK: New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery returns to Blackberry Island with the poignant tale of two sisters on the verge of claiming their dreams.

Small-town nurse Nina Wentworth has made a career out of being a caretaker. More “Mom” than their mother ever was, she sacrificed medical school—and her first love—so her sister could break free. Which is why she isn’t exactly thrilled to see Averil back on Blackberry Island, especially when Nina’s life has suddenly become…complicated.

Nina unexpectedly finds herself juggling two men—her high school sweetheart and a younger maverick pilot who also wants to claim her heart. But as fun as all this romance is, Nina has real life to deal with. Averil doesn’t seem to want the great guy she’s married to, and doesn’t seem to be making headway writing her first book; their mom is living life just as recklessly as she always has; and Nina’s starting to realize that the control she once had is slipping out of her fingers. Her hopes of getting off the island seem to be stretching further away…until her mother makes a discovery that could change everything forever.

But before Nina and Averil can reach for the stars, they have to decide what they want. Will Averil stay? Will Nina leave? And what about the men who claim to love them? Does love heal, or will finding their happy ending mean giving up all they’ve ever wanted?

••••••••••••••••••••••

Set in a Pacific Northwest small town on Blackberry Island, this is the interesting and unique story of a young woman (Nina Wentworth) living and working on this small island all her life.

Nina’s mother is dysfunctional, not in a mean or purposeful way. It seems Bonnie Wentworth married as practically a child herself and never seemed to grow up. Left with two children, her husband never returned. Nina, the oldest sister became the adult, taking care of both her mother and sister Averil. Bonnie kept them in money, but Nina took on the responsibility of watching Averil when Bonnie went out of town on “buying trips” as she owned and ran an “antique shop” (well sort of).

Nina had once been in love with a wonderful young man named Dylan Harrington, who had left after he graduated and went to medical school. They had planned that she would graduate high school and join him in medical school and they would become doctors together. Ahhh, young dreams!

Reality happened, after two years of trips back on the weekends, Dylan’s parents convinced him to breakup with Nina, and he put the blame on her not immediately coming to medical school after graduating.

So, after a decade without Dylan and not much if any dating; she finds herself being rescued from the rain by the very one who’d broken her heart all those years ago! He was back, unmarried, and going into practice with his father; not to mention just as handsome, or more so than ever. Nina tried to convince herself she wasn’t interested.

Two days later, while covering a leak on the roof of her house (her mother hadn’t taken care of and said she had) Nina fell literally into the arms of Kyle Eastland. Kyle was 12 when Nina used to babysit for his sister and had a huge crush on her. He’s now a fighter pilot and spending several months in the area, and looked her up.

Okay, that’s the setup…sorry no more spoilers! You absolutely must read this wonderful story for yourself. Here’s your enticement… I laughed, I cried a bit; I screamed and wanted to “shake” people! LOL However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from Susan Mallery.

The writing is good, the only issue I have is that I got a little tired of hearing about the problems repeatedly. However, not enough that this book wouldn’t have rated a 4.5 on my scale of 5! Grab your favorite beverage, curl up and enjoy this one! I certainly did.

Q and AA Conversation with Susan Mallery about Evening Stars

1.  Tell us about your newest novel, Evening Stars.

Essentially, Evening Stars is the story of two sisters who have to learn to let go of others’ expectations in order to claim the life they each want. Nina practically raised Averil because their mom took “flaky” to a whole new level. Nina gave up her dream of going to medical school—breaking up with her first love in the process—so she could put Averil through college. But now Averil’s back home, dissatisfied with her career and her marriage. How can Averil be unhappy, Nina wonders, after everything Nina did for her?

Then Nina’s first love moves home to Blackberry Island, and he wants her back. Suddenly, she has the chance to reclaim the life she thought she wanted all those years ago, but at the same time, she’s being tempted by a much younger fighter pilot who also has his eye on her.

Evening Stars is a sometimes painful, often humorous story of moving past regret and reaching for your dreams. My hope is that readers will finish the book with a happy sigh of satisfaction and a new determination to play an active role in their own lives.

2.  What inspired you to begin writing women’s fiction stories, after focusing on your popular contemporary romance novels?

Romances are relationship stories, and so are my women’s fiction novels—they’re simply about different relationships. The relationships between sisters, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives… I consider my women’s fiction novels, such as Evening Stars, to be a natural extension of the books I’ve written for years. And because I think love is essential, romance still plays a big role in each of my women’s fiction books.

3.   In Evening Stars, who is your favorite character and why?

The character I identify with most strongly is Nina because I share her sense of responsibility for the people I love. As women, we often put a burden on ourselves to take care of everyone in our lives, whether they want us to or not. We want them to make choices that we think will make them happy, and it’s physically painful to us when they behave in what we perceive as self-destructive ways. The lesson that Nina had to learn—and one with which I still sometimes struggle—is that she can’t make choices for anyone but herself. And ultimately, the choices she makes will determine the life she lives.

4.  Tell us a little bit about younger sister Averil.

Averil is a good person who has found herself in the uncomfortable position of living someone else’s dream for her life. She went to school where Nina thought she should go. She lives where Nina thought she should live. She likes her job as a magazine writer but isn’t fulfilled by it. She loves her husband but finds herself lying to him about being ready to try for children. She isn’t happy, but she doesn’t know why, and she doesn’t know what she wants. Averil has to go backward—move home to Blackberry Island—before she can move forward.

5.  The bonds of sisterhood and family are strong themes featured in Evening Stars. Do you have any siblings, and in what ways are your own family relationships similar or different to the Wentworth’s?

I’m an only child of only children, so not only do I not have any siblings, I don’t have any cousins. I think this is a big part of the reason why “finding family” is a theme that recurs in many of my books. I’ve created my own family through marriage and by developing close, lifelong friendships. Many of my characters are in similar circumstances, building a family by choice, rather than by birth.

Nina and Averil’s relationship was very interesting to me. They are sisters, yes, but in a very real way, they also have a mother/daughter relationship. They’re only four years apart, but when Nina was twelve and Averil was eight, their mother began to leave them alone for weeks at a time while she traveled. So Nina was the one who was responsible for paying the bills, getting dinner on the table. And Nina is the person against whom Averil feels compelled to rebel. They love each other, but they have to restructure their relationship.

6.  Your descriptions of Blackberry Island are beautiful and inviting, both in the book and at www.BlackberryIsland.com. What was your inspiration behind the setting?

I live in Seattle, and there are several picturesque islands in the Puget Sound nearby. Blackberry Island isn’t modeled after any of them specifically, but it certainly was inspired by them. Blackberry Island is within commuting distance of Seattle, but in terms of pace of life, it’s a world away. Most people travel to Blackberry Island via ferry, though there is a bridge to the mainland, as well. The island is dotted with wineries and fields of daisies. Readers who want to learn more about Blackberry Island’s history or see pictures can visit the website.

7.  Romance also plays an important role in Evening Stars, as Nina unexpectedly finds herself juggling two very different and equally exciting men. Were there any challenges to writing two heroes and deciding which one would claim her heart?

I’m a one-man woman, so it was challenging for me to put myself in Nina’s shoes and date two men. It was challenging for her, too! I mean, how do people handle that kind of thing smoothly? I have no idea. I’d be completely overwhelmed. Nina’s dating dry spell had lasted for years, and suddenly, she has not one but two men romancing her. While it’s exciting, it’s also very nerve-wracking. And, might I say, pretty hysterical at times.

The biggest challenge for me was to try not to telegraph to readers which man—if either—Nina will decide upon. I want readers to take the journey along with her, and I’ll be very interested to hear whether they think Nina made the right decision.

8.  Do you have a favorite scene from Evening Stars?

Many. One that comes to mind takes place in Chapter One. Nina’s car has broken down, and it’s pouring rain—which it often does in the Pacific Northwest. She’s in a cellular dead spot on the island, so she can’t call for help. She has no choice but to walk home in the rain. In her Betty Boop nurse’s scrubs, make-up running, wet hair hanging limply into her face, thighs chafing as she trudges down the muddy road… she’s not exactly looking or feeling her best. Which, of course, means that this is when her first love will come back into her life.

Dylan has never looked better. Naturally. Isn’t that just like a man? He’s a doctor, driving a new car that costs more than Nina makes in a year, and he offers her a ride.

Nina keeps walking.

Makes me laugh every time I think of it! I hope it’ll make readers laugh, too. In that moment, I am 100% on Nina’s side. I love her!

9.  Describe your ideal writing space. How does it compare to where you usually write?

My ideal writing space is quiet, filled with light, and my little dog is nearby. I bounce ideas off of her, and she approves them all very enthusiastically. She’s not discerning, but she is encouraging. I’m fortunate to have an office where I write, so unless I’m traveling, I write in my ideal environment. I have a very exacting writing schedule. In order to meet my many deadlines, I need to do everything in my power to nurture my creative needs.

10.   Can we look forward to more Blackberry Island stories in the near future, or are you working on any new exciting projects?

Evening Stars is the final book in the Blackberry Island trilogy, but it does lead readers toward a new series I’ll begin in 2015, set in Mischief Bay, California. That’s where Averil and her husband live, so readers will get a small introduction to Mischief Bay in Evening Stars.

On the romance front, I’ll release three Fool’s Gold books in paperback this year—When We Met, Before We Kiss, and Until We Touch—plus an ebook novella, Yours for Christmas.

About the book: Release Date February 25, 2014

Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn’t want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can—and never let go.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HARD AS YOU CAN is the second storyline in Laura Kaye’s contemporary, adult, romance, suspense Hard Ink series focusing on five former Special Forces soldiers trying to prove their innocence from a mission that went horribly wrong. This is Shane McCallan and Crystal (Sara) Dean’s story and begins immediately on the tail of book one – Hard As It Gets. Nick and his men are hoping to extricate Becca’s brother Charlie from the men who hold him captive and Crystal Dean may be Charlie’s ticket to freedom.

The storyline follows Crystal as she is in desperate need of help if she is to ever save her life and that of her younger sister but Crystal knows that to run could mean the end. When her father’s past bleeds into her present, Crystal is caught between illegal activities and the law. Her only choice is to remain bound to a man and a job she does not want and hope that in the near future she will be able to escape. Enter Shane McCallan-the man who will become both her protector and her future.

The attraction between Crystal and Shane is immediate-there is no denying the heat-but Crystal’s life is not hers to command. As the storyline progresses, Shane will discover that Crystal and her sister Jenna are in danger and the people behind the threats are tied directly to the Special Forces mission in Afghanistan that all went to h*ll. Crystal has suffered horribly for her father’s sins and Shane will ensure that it will never happen again.

The world building continues from book one. We learn more about the men who have each other’s backs as well as the emotional scars that have kept them apart for so long. A family of survivors, our Special Forces soldiers will pull together to save those they love and get one step closer to the truth about what happened.

Laura Kaye writes from the heart-her storylines are about survivors –men who have survived the war in the Middle East only to return to a war on drugs, gangs and human trafficking -are all topics tackled in the stories of Hard Ink. Each member of the Special Forces team has a story to tell and a special someone to find.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge..

Q & A

HARD AS YOU CAN is your second book in the “Hard Ink” series (after USA Today bestseller, HARD AS IT GETS). What can readers look forward to?

Readers can look forward to tons of sexy alpha male goodness, awesome bromance between the Hard Ink men, more antics from the Hard Ink puppy, and another great love story between Shane and Crystal. But readers should also be ready for a book that is darker, more intense, and more emotional. This book pushed me to emotional places that were tough as a writer, and might be tough for readers, too. But I think that just makes the payoff at the end so much sweeter!

Describe Shane and Crystal. What are their best traits? What are their weaknesses?

Shane and Crystal are such an amazing couple to me. They’re each exactly what the other needs. Shane’s best traits are his protectiveness, his fundamental kindness, and his soul-deep loyalty (his southern accent and humor are also right up there!). His biggest weakness for sure is a tragedy from the past for which he blames himself—and it’s something that continues to motivate him in Hard As You Can. Crystal’s best traits are her courage, protectiveness, and selflessness—she’s willing to do anything to keep her younger sister safe. Her biggest weakness is also that selflessness, because the sacrifices she’s required to make are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

If you could describe your book in a 140 character tweet, what would it be?

When a woman in trouble assists an ex-soldier’s covert mission to regain his team’s stolen honor, he finds a new mission to save her, too

What are you most excited about with this second book release?

I’m really excited to take readers deeper into these awesome characters and into the mystery behind the Hard Ink team’s ambush and discharge!

What books are you reading right now?

I’m almost done with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander (yes, I’m very late to the party but OMG JAMIE FRASER!!!). And I’ve recently devoured and loved Juliana Stone’s Offsides and Shelly Thacker’s time-travel historical romance, Forever His.

What can fans of your “Hard Ink” series look forward to next?

There will be two more Hard Ink books in 2014!

Hard to Hold on To – August 2014
Hard to Come By – November 2014

Description:
Everything’s coming together for budding fashion designer Carolina Preston. Only months away from having her own line, she could use some publicity. That’s when her brother suggests his best friend as a model—hockey player Drew Hogan.
Carolina and Drew already have a history—a hot one, back in college. Unforgettable for Carolina, but for Drew, just another slap shot. This time, though, it’s different. His perfect body would be for professional use only. This time, she could use him.
Drew is all for it. He’s looking forward to the exposure. Plus, it would give him a chance to prove to Carolina that he’s changed. If only he could thaw her emotions, convince her to let down her guard and let him in just one more time…

Review:

For anyone who knows me, they know I love my sports, especially hockey.  So it shouldn’t come as a surprise I’m once again reviewing Melting the Ice, another hockey themed book by Jaci Burton. I just love her Play by Play series as every book has another hero who’s a professional athlete.  I had never heard of Jaci before her previous hockey themed book Taking a Shot which I reviewed for TRC, afterwards, I had to go back and read the others.  I wasn’t disappointed that I did, and am glad I’m trying to keep up with this series.   So when I heard she had another hockey themed book coming out, I couldn’t wait.  I had to read about her latest hockey hero Drew Hogan and his lady love, well, he wants her as his lady love, Carolina Preston.

Drew and Carolina have a history dating back to a one night stand in college.  At the time Drew was spooked by his strong feelings for Carolina so like a coward he was back then, left and never contacted her again, and that didn’t sit well with Carolina.  Now it’s eight years later and she’s trying to make a mark in the fashion world, so when her brother Gray(One Sweet Ride) suggests his best friend and hockey star Drew Hogan as a model, Carolina isn’t so sure. However, once she sees him again, things really progress between them.  Ms. Burton really hit the mark with these two characters. They just brought the story to life with their personalities, witty banter, playfulness, sexual chemistry that was off the charts, and just a real sense of ease and comfort around each other. I found them to compliment and balance each other just right, but at the same time, each had their own edge to their personalities that drove them professionally and personally. I really liked these two characters and found the story just flew by for me because of it. It was so easy to sit back and read about these two characters and enjoy what was happening.  When a book can fly by like that for me, and before I know it I’m reading the last page, then I know I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve just read, but am sad I’m done that book so soon.

The hero and heroine weren’t the only well written characters.  All the secondary characters in the book were equally as good and help to move the story along and add depth and personality to not only the story, but our main couple.  We get to see pieces of them through the eyes of the secondary characters.  We get to see Caronlina’s family again, and also get to see just how much her family has always seen Drew as family through his friendship with Gray.  Watching Gray first catch Caronlina in Drew’s bed at their family home over Christmas, then come to terms with their relationship was fun to watch.  He had that whole ‘big brother must protect little sister’ thing going on, very sweet.  It was also fun to watch Drew muddle his way through this relationship.  He’s your typical jock, who is more comfortable in his sport skin, then relationship skin.  He had me chuckling as I read the scene where he finally was attempting to admit his feelings to Carolina.  Even though he was doing a semi bad job at it and tripping over his words, I loved the scene for it was sweet and endearing and made me love Drew all the more for it. Watching Drew slowly whoo Carolina and get her to see he changed from college and is really ready to settle down and that she’s the only girl for him, can I just say swoon time.  Drew is so charming, fun, and sexy as hell, plus a professional hockey player, that spells perfect male for me.

This was a fun and fast paced read for me. I loved every aspect of the book from beginning to end.  The slow to build romance, the fast paced hockey scenes and team mate camaraderie, playfulness between Drew and Carolina, and the off the charts chemistry and love scenes between them that left me needing a cold glass of water.  Let me just tell you, I will never be able to go to a hockey game again, or watch one on tv without thinking of the underwear photo shoot scene that Carolina did with Drew on the ice in front of the net, wooo baby…fanning self.  Once again Jaci has out done herself with this latest installment in her Play by Play series.  Now I have to wait a whole year before the next one comes out.

Until next time, happy reading everyone

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 24, 2014

Megan Miller is on a dream trip to research her doctoral thesis at a rock festival in England. When she arrives in town she’s stunned that her temporary neighbor is the spitting image of her 70’s rock idol, too bad he’s also a world-class jerk. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Seventies rock star Davy Morgan is a man with a secret: rockin’ in one time and living in another. He holds his privacy close to his heart, so when a beautiful girl who not only loves but truly understands his music moves in next door, he works overtime to keep her at a distance. Easier said than done. Megan follows Davy to the rock festival, but it’s not what or when it seems. The lure of the music draws them closer, but can their newfound love span across the decades, or will it get lost in time?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HOT ROCK is a paranormal, romantic, time travel storyline that spans 1971 to 2014. Australian sociologist Megan Miller travels to England to research for her doctoral thesis on the cult of the rock band only to discover that her rude and flamboyant neighbor is an identical likeness to 70s rock icon Davy Morgan-a musician Megan has researched in the past.

The storyline follows Megan as she is swept back in time to 1971-to the beginning of Davy Morgan’s career and the very music festival where both of their futures begin to unfold. While staying at a small, village cottage in 2014, Megan meets ‘David Morgan’-nephew to the rock icon Davy Morgan-and an immediate love/hate relationship begins. But when David disappears and Megan follows closely behind, our couple will take their friendship to the next level as Davy’s career and that of his band begin its’ rise up the charts in 1971.

The relationship between Megan and Davy is quick to develop as the storyline encompasses a few days in the life. From frenemies to lovers, our couple is pulled to one another like magnets and there is no stopping the future as it unfolds in the past.

Annie Seaton draws the reader into the fashion, music and discrimination of 1971: where Davy Morgan meets David Bowie; and where ‘peace, love and, rock and roll’ was the anthem of a generation.

HOT ROCK is a quick read, where one woman discovers that her love for the music and the man from 1971 knows no boundaries including the time line and several generations of rock stars and music.

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration behind HOT ROCK? Is the character of Davy/David Morgan based in reality-on any particular male rock singer (past or present)?

Annie: I’ve been a fan of seventies music since…the seventies! It seems that many of my favourite singers were Davids…so my fictional rock star had to be a David. I guess the music that Davy Morgan plays would be similar to David Bowie and in my mind, I imagined him to look like David Essex in his heyday!

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is this a standalone storyline?

Annie: This is a standalone book..which is unusual for me. All of my other books are in series.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Annie: When I write each day, I go back to the beginning and re edit what I have written so far. That way I can ensure that I am leaving enough clues, yet without giving too much away. I loved the creative freedom of writing the time travel in tis, but my editors kept a very close watch on the continuity…so that was easy to follow the different time periods.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Annie: Being an Aussie… I would have to say Chris Hemsworth.. but he’d need to have black curly hair! Johnny Depp would run a close second.

Anne Hathaway would bring that air of vulnerability to Megan’s character.

Outback AffairTRC: Outback Affair (October 2013) is the third storyline in your Affair series. Do you have any plans for another instalment?

Annie: Funny you should ask that. Many of my readers aare asking for another one and I’ve been thinking of a long lost brother…from before Tessa married. We’ll see.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Annie: That is such a good question. I used to be what is called an ‘organic writer’ otherwise known as a panster, but my editors prefer a good synopsis as soon as the book is contracted. Unfortunately my characters never do what I planned but I do think it enriches my stories .

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Annie: The old maxim ‘show versus tell’ is the key to his. It is so important to use words, settings and feelings that let the reader live in the character’s skin. I find this process quite easy as I also work as an editor and am constantly teaching my authors how to remove filter words and phrases that sets up a barrier between the character and the reader’s response.

I think writer’s fail when they provide too much narrative and don’t let the actions and events come out through the characters immersion in a scene.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Annie: As soon as I am stuck for an idea , I head to the beach. Water is my element and feeds my creative muse (as you can see by my Facebook photos) Many a scene has been written in my head as I walk along the beach.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Annie: It was easy to write this setting as I visited Glastonbury about eight years ago and had many photos that I took on that visit. I had to rely on my memory for the smells and sounds of the English countryside. I didn’t go to the rock festival so I relied on videos. There is a wealth of material on the internet for research.
I usually write in a quiet room, but I actually played a lot of Peter Frampton music as I wrote Hot Rock…to keep me in the zone.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Annie: I have a couple of fabulous writer friends …who I talk to every day on social media. We bounce ideas for each of our current stories and two of my friends read my manuscripts before they go to the editor.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Annie: I am working on three stories at once…yes I know…crazy writer! I have just commenced the third book in th Half Moon Bay series and am currently trying to get into Georgie’s skin. I am writing a historical book about a missing Emerald necklace (with pirates!) and I am working on a single title…a political romantic thriller set in the outback of Australia.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Annie: Thanks so much for having me visit. I love to hear from readers and answer every email or FB message that they send me. I love talking about my books and I have a reader’s group for each book.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SENSUAL SURRENDER is the second storyline in Katie Reus’s contemporary, adult, romantic, suspense -The Serafina: Sin City Series. The focus of the series is on the men and women who work at the exclusive Las Vegas resort and hotel The Serafina. This is Ellis and Jay’s story. Ellie is the personal assistant to billionaire hotel mogul Wyatt Christiansen and Jay works security at the hotel.

The premise follows Ellie as she is determined to protect the people and the man that she loves from her past. But her past has come calling and Ellie is on the run. Handing in her resignation fuels the curiosity and concern of everyone at the Serafina when Ellie pushes everyone away in search for a solution to a debt that she owes. Ellie’s attempts to right a wrong, set into motion, a series of events that will end in tragedy-one way or another.

The relationship between Ellie and Jay started in a previous storyline. Now lovers and so much more, the sexual heat is strong between the couple; their lovemaking is sensual; but there is still the unspoken question of trust-why hadn’t Ellie come to Jay with her problem?

Katie Reus pulls the reader into a storyline of mystery and suspense; heartbreak and betrayal; getting rich and the bottom line. Sensual Surrender looks at the illegal side of life in Sin City where power and money mean the ultimate control. Ellie is caught between a life with the man that she loves and a life she thought she had left behind.

Sensual Surrender is a welcome addition to The Serafina: Sin City Series. There is a little bit of mystery; a little bit of suspense; and a whole lot of sex and romance rolled into a story where the past meets the present and could very well affect the future.
