Description:
When Sass Hogan catches her boyfriend slow-dancing and doing the tongue-tango with Tori Double-D-Cup Hunter, she pays him back the only way she knows how—by taking a tire iron to his beloved ’67 Mustang Fastback. There’s only one problem. She’s destroyed the wrong car.

Jordan Michaels wants his car fixed, now, and he wants Sass’s auto body shop to do it.  But the handsome blond has a secret−he’s really Jordan Carlyle of Carlyle’s Classics, Hogan’s biggest competitor, and he’s determined to prove himself to his family.

As Sass and Jordan get to know each other, the depth of the attraction has them falling in love. But a relationship based on lies will only leave them primed for the worst wreck of their lives.

Review:

In Mustang Sassy by Daire St. Denis, we meet Sass Hogan and she is hell on wheels…  She works at her father’s vintage auto restoration shop and she doesn’t take anything from anybody.  When Sass decides to stop by the local bar for her birthday she sees her so called boyfriend dancing with Tori “Double-D-Cup” Hunter – she loses her mind and all of her senses.  She does the only thing she can think of to get even with him.  She takes a tire iron to his beloved 1967 Mustang Fastback.  The revenge is fleeting and bitter sweet – especially when she realizes it wasn’t her boyfriend’s car she totaled – the vehicle belongs to tall, blonde and handsome stranger Jordan Michael.  Facing up to her mistake proves harder for her than she would like but making it right is her only mission.  Good thing she is on of the top vintage car restorers out there. In a twist of fate, it turns out that Jordan Michaels has a story of his own. He is in town for one reason and one reason only.  To scope out the competition at the local auto restoration shop and steal their lead restorer. But why – and who exactly is Jordan Michaels?  Little did they both know that with one fatal blow of the tire iron – their lives would be forever intertwined!

Sass Hogan is the epitome of tom-boy.  She knows her cars, she likes to drive fast and she knows what she likes. A short list of men that have hurt her has led her to a few simple rules.  No dates and no sleepovers. Seems like simple rules to follow.  But Jordan Michael’s is making it hard for her to follow them – making it hard for her to concentrate even.  Sass becomes beyond frustrated in every sense of the word and her frustration flows from the page – gripping you – the reader. I fell for the character of Sass within the first few pages – she is feisty and sassy and everything in between.  She is strong willed and in self protection mode.  And exactly the way she wants and needs to be. Or so she thinks.

Jordan Michael’s has a secret – he isn’t who he claims to be.  And he is in town on his own agenda.  But some maniac took a tires iron to his car and he must now stay in town and wait while it gets fixed.  Jordan doesn’t seem to mind – this all gives him more of an opportunity to stakeout the competition, Sass’ fathers’ restoration shop. Jordan is complex and compassionate.  And the scenes with him and Sass at the cabin are some of my favorite.

The sub characters of Sass’ friends – Libby and Millie are just as wonderful.  I wish we would have found out more about Libby and her life and what became of Millie.

The story has a hint of “Taming of the Shrew” tendencies and also hints at it in the story.  I found this a highlight of the story that only added to the intricacies. Mustang Sassy was quick moving storylilne and never once did I falter reading it.  I read it all in one sitting and wished that there was more to the story and that it hadn’t ended at all. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Catching Up With Shannon K. Butcher – Interview & Giveaway

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back the fabulous Shannon K. Butcher.  Today Shannon will be discussing her new release, Willing Sacrifice, which is the 10th book in her wonderful Sentinel Wars series.  Shannon will also tell us what she has upcoming.

Just below this post is our dual review of Willing Sacrifce.

Let’s talk to Shannon.

TRC: Hi Shannon.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us again at The Reading Cafe, and to give us an update as to what you have upcoming, as well as what to expect in 2014.

Shannon: Thanks so much for having me back! It’s always great to come back for a visit.

This year will see the addition of one book to each of my two current series. First up is WILLING SACRIFICE, which came out this week. It’s the tenth installment of the Sentinel Wars series, and the conclusion to Torr and Grace’s storyline that so many of you have asked for. It’s a bit of a change of pace for what readers have come to expect from the series, but I hope folks enjoy it. I know I had a ton of fun writing it!

Next up is the fourth book of my romantic suspense series, the Edge. EDGE OF BETRAYAL comes out in November 2014, and revolves around computer genius Mira, and bad boy Adam.

TRC:  Willing Sacrifice, which was released yesterday, is your 10th book in your wonderful Sentinel Wars series.  Can you please tell us the premise of this series, for those who may not have read it?

Shannon:   Sure. The Sentinel Wars is a dark paranormal romance series with plenty of action. There are three races of beings who are fighting back the forces of evil that plague Earth. They each have their own set of powers and skills, but all are vital to turning the tide of war against the demons that roam free, killing innocent humans.

Most of the books center around the Theronai, who are hot, tattooed, badass, sword-wielding warriors who have vowed to protect humans. Their kind is dying off because there are few females left and no more being born. Without their female counterparts, the power the men house grows until it becomes toxic and begins destroying their soul. Every male Theronai born knows he has an expiration date. As each leaf on their lifemark—a living tattoo that covers their chests—falls, a little piece of them dies.

In book one, these men come across a woman raised as human who had no idea what she really is—the first of her kind born in centuries. The series kicks off when she learns that she can wield the powers of magic and help stem the rising tide of demons out for human and Sentinel blood.

Willing sacrifice.March 14jpgTRC: Can you give a brief description of Willing Sacrifice?

Shannon:  Willing Sacrifice is the conclusion to a story I’ve been working on for years. Torr, one of the Theronai, was paralyzed while rescuing Grace and her brother from demons. Torr knew he could never be with Grace—he was helpless in his paralysis, and unable to protect her from the demons who wanted her blood. Grace knew that Torr would die if he didn’t go out into the world and find the woman who could save his soul and restore his failing body. As much as she wanted to save him, she was powerless to do so.

Without spoiling anything, their paths continued to cross for several books. Now, when Torr least expects it, he’s summoned to another world where the powerful Athanasian woman, Brenya, lives. She demands his help in accordance with a vow he made to her in the hopes of saving Grace’s life. He finds the woman he loves, but she no longer knows who he is. Her memory has been wiped clean of everything she ever knew.

The two of them set out into the wild, untamed wilderness to seek and destroy the source of evil that’s begun to trickle through a gateway so they can save the only world Grace has ever known.

TRC:  When you were here last you mentioned that you were working on some other “fun paranormal projects”.  Anything new on this?

Shannon:   Nothing I’m ready to share yet. My schedule has been so busy that I’m still fighting to get new projects squeezed in between my contracted work. I just finished book five—the final book of the Edge series, and am getting set to start work on the next installment of the Sentinel Wars. Once that’s done, there will be a bit of time for my pet projects—most of which are so close to being done, I can taste it. 🙂

TRC:  In your spare time, you design & create such beautiful jewelry.  Has this always been a hobby, and how do you find time to make these unique creations?

Shannon: Thank you! I’ve always loved making things with my hands. It started with pretty rocks and dough made out of flour and water, and evolved into something that needs its own room to contain. The magpie in me has always appreciated shiny things, so making my own jewelry seemed a much saner option than going broke buying all the things that caught my eye.

I honestly don’t have a lot of time to bead anymore. I try to find one afternoon a month to play, but it often ends up being used to do all the important things that slide when I’m writing. The good news is that beads don’t expire, and they’re always there waiting patiently for me to find time to give them my attention.

The few things I am able to make end up going to contest prizes, raffle baskets or charity auctions. If you have a love of shiny things like I do, I encourage you to check out my website for whatever it is I’m giving away this month. 🙂

TRC:  Thank you, Shannon for giving us an update on what we can look forward to in 2014, and we wish you the best with Willing Sacrifice.

Shannon:  Thank you so much for letting me come out of my writing cave for a few minutes to visit. I spend so little time on social media these days, I really enjoy having an opportunity like this to let people know what’s going on in my writing life. Until next time…happy reading!

Giveaway 21-30-51Shannon has graciously offered to give a member of The Reading Café a chance to win a signed copy of Willing Sacrifice, as well as a handmade necklace, bead embroidered by Shannon.

Sandy’s Review

WILLING SACRIFICE is the eighth storyline in Shannon K. Butcher’s paranormal, romance, fantasy series-The Sentinel Wars. The Sentinels are three races descended from an ancient race of guardians known as the Athanasians, who defend and protect mankind from the demons at the door. The Theronai are the protectors, the Sanguinar are the healers (as well as blood feeders) and the Synestryn-the demons.

The premise follows Torr as he is commanded to Temprocia in an effort to quell the forces on the hunt for Brenya-one of the most powerful females known to the Theronai. As the legions of Hunters, demons and the Warden draw near Torr will be paired with his one-time love Grace-a woman who has no memory of Torr or of their relationship. What ensues is Torr’s need to keep the woman that he loves safe from harm when she continuously goes out of her way to protect the stranger who has been sent to save her world. Grace is drawn to Torr, for reasons she cannot explain, but the more she looks deep into herself, the more her memory begins to return.

WILLING SACRIFICE is a story of second chances in a world where staying alive is a daily struggle. The reader is pulled into an engaging and suspense filled storyline where a human places a stranger’s life above her own. Call it woman’s intuition or a self-sacrificing soul, but Grace cannot explain her need to protect the man who calls to heart-a heart she didn’t know could feel so much love.

There is little to no reference about the previous storyline characters or premise. Willing Sacrifice focuses on three people: Torr, Grace and Brenya. Most of the storyline revolves around the struggle to prevent the Hunters and Demons from discovering the whereabouts of Brenya and Torr’s attempts to keep Grace safe from harm. The storyline’s connection to the Sentinel Wars is limited in its’ affects on the series or any of the original premise.

Shannon K Butcher weaves a tale of lost love in a world of death and destruction. Torr and Grace are soul mates who will get a second chance at happiness-if they can only survive  the demonic attacks and each other.

Barb’s Review

Sandy’s wonderful review details everything about Shannon K. Butcher’s wonderful Sentinal Wars series.  Here are my thoughts on Willing Sacrifice.  This book belongs to Torr and Grace. In the last book, we knew how much Torr was suffering from injuries caused by demons that nearly cost him his life.  Without his knowledge, Grace, who is human, willingly uses a magical talisman to help Torr recover, thereby bringing his horrific injuries to herself.  As Grace lay in a coma, the book ends with her being whisked away by a powerful Attanasia female, who by taking her to another world, would try save her.

When Willing Sacrifice begins, Torr is depressed and cares about nothing anymore, especially without his Grace.  He doesn’t care if he lives or dies; then out of nowhere he is also whisked away to the world where Brenya, the powerful female, needs his help. He learns that Grace is still alive, 4 years has passed (in this world), and she no longer has any memory of her life before or him. We also learn more about Brenya, who plays a major role in this story.

What follows is an exciting story of Torr working with Grace to help fight the enemies who come to destoy them  Slowly the romance builds on its own, and you feel all of Torr’s pain, as his love of Grace is so strong, even if she is human and cannot be his mate. Torr and Grace were so beautiful together.  Grace was strong, stubborn and determined to help Torr, no matter how dangerous it was.  She found herself first attracted to him, then the feelings became stronger, and Torr did all he could to keep his word he would say nothing. It was fun to see him react to her putting her self in danger, and his constant trying to protect her or send her away to safety, only to have her rebuff him. We knew that somehower, the barriers that blocked Grace’s feelings for Torr would be hard pressed to stand up against their true strong love for each other.

I have loved this series from the start, and love Shannon Butcher’s writing, as she weaves a wonderful, exciting, tense, romantic and steamy storyline in every book.  Willing Sacrifice has all of that, but was different then most of the books.  Almost 95% of the book was Torr, Grace and Brenya, with a small part being Tori.  It is rare that a story is solely with a minimum few, but we got to spend a lot of fun time with this fabulous couple.  What amazes me is that Shannon still made this an exciting fun hot story that is not to be missed, which proves what I have been saying. Shannon Butcher is a fantastic writer.

Desire for Heather still invades his every waking moment, and when trouble threatens their sexual explorations he makes the hardest choice of his life. One he may soon regret.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: VANILLA TWIST is the third instalment in CJ Ellisson’s A Walk on the Wild Side contemporary, adult, erotic romance series. This is Heather Pierce and Tony Carmine’s second storyline. We were first introduced to our couple in the first book-Vanilla on Top-a story where Heather stepped out of her comfort zone to find the man who was her perfect match-both inside and outside of the bedroom.

Vanilla Twist furthers Heather and Tony’s relationship but a relationship that is threatened by Tony’s past and Heather’s ex. Tony’s history of womanizing and short-lived relationships plays a role in his friendships with family and pals but it is one recent relationship in particular that may push away the woman that he loves. As Heather’s photography business begins to flourish her corporate life will force her to make a decision about both her future and her past.

CJ Ellisson writes a storyline where two people must face the possibility of a different future then the one they had originally intended. The sex is sensual, arousing and inventive; but it is the maturity with which both Tony and Heather handle a potentially difficult situation that brings our couple together for a HEA.

When life crashes down around us, how hard are we willing to fight for the one thing we can’t live without, each other?

Life is full of moments.

Big moments.

Little moments.

And none of them are inconsequential.

Every single moment prepares you for that one instance that defines your life. You must overcome all your fears, confront the demons that chase you, and cleanse the poison that clings to your soul or you risk the chance of losing everything.

Mine started the minute Rylee fell out of that damn storage closet. She made me feel. Made me whole when all I thought I could ever be was incomplete. Became the lifeline I never knew I needed. Hell yes, she’s worth the fight…but how do you fight for someone you know you don’t deserve?

Love is full of ups and downs.

Heart stopping highs.

Soul shattering lows.

And none of them are insignificant.

Love is a racecourse of unexpected twists and turns that must be negotiated. You have to break down walls, learn to trust, and heal from your past in order to win. But sometimes it’s the expected that’s the hardest to hold on to.

Colton has healed and completed me, stolen my heart, and made me realize our love’s not predictable nor perfect—it’s bent. And bent’s okay. But when outside factors put our relationship to the test, what lengths will I have to go to prove to him that he’s worth the fight?

Whoever said love is patient and love is kind, never met the two of us. We know our love is worth it—have acknowledged that we were meant to be—but when our pasts crash into our future, will the repercussions make us stronger or break us apart?

CRASHED is the third and final instalment in K. Bromberg’s contemporary, romance, erotic Driven Trilogy focusing on Colton Donavan and Rylee Thomas. Colton is the billionaire race car driver whose earlier years are the stuff of nightmares and Rylee is Colton’s superhero who rescues her man from the pits of hell.

The focus of CRASHED is on Colton’s recovery –both mentally, emotionally and physically-following the crash that nearly ended his life. The reader is pulled into an emotional roller coaster ride of one man’s need to prove he is not worthy of love and acceptance and, of one woman’s determination to ensure that Colton knows that he is not the child of his early years but the sum of a lifetime of experiences and pain. Colton sabotages everything good in his life proving that no one can be trusted with his heart and his soul.

CRASHED (and the Driven series) is a story of overcoming adversity and abuse. Colton Donavan is a man broken by the secrets of his past-the secrets that had imprisoned his heart and his mind into a world of betrayal, abuse and nightmares. Colton is a man who has been beaten down by everything that life throws at him and in this he is reluctant to accept love-from family, from friends and from the woman who has stolen his heart. Crashed is a story of recovery; overcoming adversity and moving forward but not before life and everything it has to offer pushes Colton closer to the edge of the abyss that is waiting to suck him under.

K.Bromberg has written an emotionally intensive storyline (and series) that is astonishing in its’ brilliance, its’ presentation and its’ provocative story. Bromberg seduces the reader into a dramatic and sensual storyline where the pain of abuse follows a broken hero from one life to the next; and where the love of one woman who refused to give up is the only hero Colton Donavan would ever need.

excerpt

Excerpt #1-Crashed by K. Bromberg

And the only thing I can focus on—can grasp onto as my heart races and body shakes with anger—is that I need a pit stop. I need to find Colton. I need to touch him, to see him, to quiet the turmoil in my soul.

But I can’t.

He’s somewhere close, my rebellious rogue unable to let go of the damaged little boy within. The man who has just started healing is now broken, and it kills me that I won’t be able to fix him. That my murmured words of encouragement and patient nature won’t be able to repair the immobile and unresponsive body that was loaded onto that stretcher and rushed to somewhere within these walls—so close yet so very far away from me. That he has to rely on strangers to mend and heal him now. Strangers that have no idea of the invisible scar tissue that still lingers beneath the surface.

More hands reach out to touch and soothe me, Dorothea’s and Quinlan’s, but they’re not the ones I want. They’re not Colton’s.

And then a terrifying thought hits me. Every time Colton is near, I can feel that tingle—the buzz that tells me he’s just within reach—but I can’t feel anything. I know he’s physically close, but his spark is nonexistent.

REVIEW

3.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Before getting into this review, I am going to say that this book is not for the easily offended. This was a harder erotica novel with explicit sex scenes, language and many a head game. If this kind of reading is not your cup of tea, I will dare say that you will not enjoy this book. If it is your cup of tea, or you are okay to push your personal reading boundaries, then check out my review!

The Initiation of Ms Holly by K.D. Grace is a contemporary erotic novel set in London England, present time. We meet our leads right away as they have a rather “chocolate intense” encounter when the passenger train they are travelling on loses power and submerges everyone in the dark. Plucked right out of a naughty fantasy, this er ..”joining”, leads to a number exchange and a journey that was crazy hot.

Rita Holly cannot stop thinking about her encounter with Edward. When she receives a text to meet him at the mysterious “Mount Club”, she is fascinated and terrified all at the same time. She learns that Edward is not only a member of the “Mount Club” but he has also requested that Rita be initiated into the club. Rita, while completely gobsmacked, is intrigued and finds she is a tad eager to complete her initiation training. While convinced by her boss to do a journal expose on The Mount Club, Rita also begins to bond with the members making her choices harder and harder. Edward also is forced to be slightly elusive and most assuredly secretive by the truely bitchy high counsel member Vivienne. Rita doesn’t understand why Edward must do all Vivienne says. The deeper Rita becomes involved in her initiation process, the more secrets are revealed. Is all this worth it?? This is a question that Rita must answer for herself.

Ok … so .. lots of sex. I mean LOTS of sex. Lots of role play, kink, menage, and same sex. Character development was on the weaker side due to all of this sex. I had a bit of a disconnect with Rita and Edward because of all that was going on and how fast their relationship happened. I will tell you this however … BRILLIANT VILLAIN! Vivienne was the character that I love to hate, and she was so screwed up and such a first class ^&%% she stole this book and over shadowed every one else. The secrets revealed in this book were awesome as well, and towards the end I was high fiving K.D. Grace’s and her way of pulling the entire story together.

So if you love a serious smutty read, check this one out.

Why a good proof reader is necessary

First of all, I’d like to thank the lovely folks at The Reading Café for having me over. It’s truly a pleasure to be here. I’d like to share four reasons why I think a good proof reader is so important to an author.

INo-Mistakes.gif’m very good at self-editing. I don’t send out a manuscript that isn’t as clean as I can make it. I’m sure that’s something all writers strive to do. If the manuscript isn’t clean, it reflects badly on me as an author; it shows lack of respect for my editor, and it detracts from the star of the show – my story. With every novel, novella and short story I write, I read my final edit out loud. I often go through the manuscript from the last chapter to the first so my brain can’t fill in what’s supposed to be there, but isn’t. The bottom line is, no matter how good I am at self-editing, there are things I miss. From time to time, my brain does fill in what I expect to be there. Usually what my brain misses is something obvious, something someone looking with fresh eyes would catch immediately, something I would catch immediately if I were looking at someone else’s manuscript. On top of that, we all have weak areas in our basic writing skills. I know that punctuation is my weak point. My lack of confidence with commas can easily be offset with a good look-see by someone else who is more punctuation savvy.

The second reason it’s important to have a good proof reader is that it makes everyone else’s job easier. By everyone else, I’m speaking specifically of the editor who’ll have to read the finished manuscript. Clean manuscripts make everyone happy and showcase the story rather than the scaffolding on which the story’s built.

proofreading2Thirdly, I’m sure I’m not the only one ever to read a novel that’s been poorly edited. Mistakes get through. It’s true. We’re all only human, but the more mistakes that get through the editing process, the more attention is drawn to the scaffolding and away from the story itself. The one thing we writers NEVER want is anything that will draw our readers’ attention away from the story we’re telling. We want our babies to shine with pacey plots, interesting characters and fantastic settings. We don’t want our babies to be tarnished by typos, grammar and punctuation errors or worse. With the meteoric rise of self-publishing, lack of proof reading and poor editing is a much more common problem than it used to be. In most cases the writer and the editor are the same person. Under those circumstances it’s crucial to have a good proof reader who is someone else.

The final reason why a good proof reader is so important is that a writer spends a whole lot of time and energy creating a story she hopes will intrigue, entertain, and even inspire. It’s safe to say that, on average, a novel of 80-100 thousand words is at the very least, six months’ worth of hard work and quite often much more. All writers know the kind of blood, sweat and tears that go into making their story shine. A novel is way too much work to send it out the door without making sure the story being told is polished and pristine, spiffed up and ready to dazzle.

A science teacher I knew used to start every year reminding his students that first impressions are lasting impressions. Nothing could be truer for fiction writers. If our novel, novella or short story has had a good proof reading, then the story will leave the lasting impression, not the lack of proofing.

He practically fell on top of Rita, his hand grazing her left breast in the complete darkness. She yelped and grabbed him to keep from losing her balance.

“God, I’m sorry!” He gasped. “Bloody nuisance, this, isn’t it?” His voice was warm, melodious, by far the most pleasant thing that had happened to Rita since she left Paris. “Oh dear. You’re trembling. Are you all right?”

“I’m claustrophobic” her words were thin and shaky, as though she didn’t fully trust herself to let them out. “It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t know where we are.” For an embarrassing moment, she realized she was still clinging to him, but the embarrassment passed, and suddenly she didn’t care. If they were going to die trapped in a train in the Eurostar tunnel, buried beneath a gazillion gallons of water, she’d just as soon not do it alone.

He either understood, or was too polite to leave her in such distress. He wrapped his arms around her engulfing her in a muscular embrace, the scent of which was maleness barely masked by deodorant and some spicy cologne, both fading at the end of a day much longer than either of them had anticipated. “Don’t worry.” In the darkness, he misjudged the distance between them and his lips brushed her earlobe. “It’s just an electrical malfunction. Anyway we’re better off down here than in the snowstorm up above. Sounds like all of London is shut down. Who’d have expected snow this late in the spring? Never mind that, where else do you get the chance to cuddle strangers in the dark?”

He pressed a little closer to her, and she was relieved to find other thoughts, thoughts more welcome than those of their predicament, pushing their way into her head. He felt good, broad-shouldered and tall, easy to lean on.

“Why are you huddled here in the corner rather than hunkered down in your seat?”

She concentrated on his warm breath pressing against the top of her ear. “I was on my way back from the loo when the lights went out and…”

“And this is as far as you got.”

She nodded against his chest, homing in on the reassuring sound of his heartbeat.

“Shall I help you back to your seat then?”

The train lurched forward, and she yelped again, tightening her grip around his neck. “No, please. It’s better if I just don’t move.”

There was a long pause. “Do you want me to stay with you?”

She realized the poor man had little choice clenched in her strangle hold, as he was. “I don’t want to be any trouble,” she lied.

He readjusted his stance and tightened his embrace. “No trouble at all. I can’t think of a better way to pass the time than in the arms of a beautiful woman. You are beautiful, aren’t you?”

In spite of the stress she felt, she forced a laugh. “Gorgeous, actually. Too bad you can’t see for yourself.”

He ran a hand down the contour of her spine to rest low on the small of her back. “I don’t have to see you to admire you.”

The thought that the man was rather cheeky barely crossed her mind before he lifted her fingers to his lips and planted a warm kiss across the back of her knuckles. “I’m Edward. I’m from London. Clearly you’re not.”

“Rita,’ she replied. ‘I’m from Seattle, but I live in London now.”

“Well Rita, from Seattle, we’ve established that you’re an exotic beauty. Perhaps you’d like to return the favour.” He lifted her hand to his face and guided it gently over the slight stubble of his cheek. As her hand cupped his well-formed chin, he pulled her middle finger into his mouth and nibbled it, teasing the pad of it with his tongue. Suddenly her struggle to breathe had nothing to do with being claustrophobic.

“Well?” He asked pulling her hand away to massage her fingers. “What do you think? Am I acceptable?”

If he was cheeky, she was downright brazen. She stopped his words with her mouth, amazed at how easily she had found the mark in total darkness. Perhaps it was the darkness that made her so bold, but whatever it was, he didn’t disappoint. His mouth was warm, opening eagerly to the probing of her tongue, responding in kind, caressing her hard pallet, nipping at the fullness of her lower lip before pulling away just enough to speak.

“There, you see? It’s not so bad being in the dark, is it? The other senses are too often overlooked, which is very sad, since they offer such exquisite delights.” His hand moved up to cup her cheek, and he raked a thumb across her still parted lips. “Taste, for example. Few pleasures exceed that of the tongue.”

She heard him fumbling in the darkness, then she heard the rattling of foil. ‘Open your mouth,’ he whispered. “I have something that’ll make you feel better, guaranteed. Oh don’t worry, it’s nothing illegal.”

Reluctantly she opened her mouth, which he primed with a wet kiss, then slipped a chocolate truffle between her lips. It was covered liberally in cocoa and warmed exquisitely almost, but not quite to the steamy melting point of his body temperature, which only enhanced the sharp, edgy flavor that separates expensive chocolate from the cheap stuff.

She gasped her surprise, then moaned softly at the intensity of the taste.

“Don’t bite,” he kissed her jaw, then her throat. “Savour it, roll it around in your mouth. There are places on the tongue that taste only sweet and places that taste only bitter or salt, or sour. Chocolate can have all those flavors. Caress it in your mouth like you’re making love to it, and you’ll be amazed at what you taste.”

She cheeked the truffle, slurring her words as she spoke. “I thought I was tasting you.”

He chuckled softly. “Everything tastes better with chocolate.” Without another word, he took her mouth, plunging his tongue deep against the melting truffle, whirling it, lapping at it, sighing with the pleasure of it. The more liquid and heated the truffle became, the more liquid and heated Rita became.

Murder of Crows Banner 2

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back the wonderful Anne Bishop.

Anne has her new release, Murder of Crows being released tomorrow. This is the second book in her fantastic The Others series.

Let’s talk to Anne.

Hi, Anne.  We are thrilled to have you back with us again at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release “Murder of Crows”, as well as to give us an update as to what else you may be working on.

TRC:  You have just released the 2nd book in your The Others series.  For those of our members who have not read this series, can you give us a description of the premise of The Others

Anne:  The Others is an urban fantasy series set in a re-imagined Earth, where the earth natives, the supernatural beings like shape-shifters and vampires–are the dominant species that has control of most of the world. They see humans as lesser predators and a different kind of meat. Add into the mix humans living in cities surrounded by land controlled by the earth natives, always being watched for any transgression of the agreements made between the species. And to round things out, add in a girl who sees the future when her skin is cut, a girl who has run away from the man who owned her and wants to live her own life–even if it kills her. I stirred that collision of cultures and needs and came up with Written in Red, the first book in the series.

TRC:   Do you find it easier writing the second book of a series, especially having completed most of your research for the first book, and knowing your wonderful characters?

Anne:   No, it’s not easier. There is the challenge of remembering all the myriad details about the world so that simple things don’t change (is that a door or a gate?). There is holding on to the essence of each character while allowing them to continue to grow. And there is always more to learn. While Simon and Meg are still at the center of the story, in book two, our view of their world expands a little as we meet another group of humans who have their own secrets. So I wouldn’t say my research is done. It’s closer to the truth to say I have the foundation now to build on.

Murder of Crows.March 14jpgTRC:  Murder of the Crows is being released tomorrow, March 4th.  Can you please give us a brief description of the book?

Anne:   When Meg Corbyn has a prophetic dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard, the leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, starts wondering why Crows are being killed in so many human cities across Thaisia. Is it because Crows are easier to kill than the larger, predatory earth natives? Or is it because their tendency to poke around in human trash to find little treasures might uncover something humans don’t want the Others to know–something that reveals a secret about the girls called cassandra sangue?

TRC:  When we last asked you how many books you were planning on this series, you stated at least two.  Is Murder of Crows the last book in this series, or will there be more books?

Anne:   I’ve just finished writing the third book in the series. It went to my editor the other day, so it doesn’t have an official title yet. Will there be more beyond that? I’m playing with some possibilities of what might follow the events in book 3. I’ll present those to my agent and editor soon.

TRC:   What was your reaction when you found out that Written in Red was nominated on Goodreads & RT Awards for being one of the best books of 2013?  I thought it was one of my favorite books of the year, and certainly best new series.

Anne:   There was dancing. And many phone calls. And face muscles that cramped because I smiled so much. I kind of color outside the genre lines because it gives my imagination such a zing of energy to mix things up a bit and create something different. That can be risky. The nominations confirmed that readers, and reviewers, were willing to have fun with the story too.

TRC:   Would you like to share with us what you are currently working on, and what you may have upcoming in 2014?

Anne:   As I said, I’ve just finished the third book about the Others and haven’t yet settled on the story I’ll write in 2014, although I don’t think the Others are quite finished yet. As for the books, Murder of Crows will come out in the US and Australia. Daughter of the Blood is coming out in the UK this week and will also be released in Brazil sometime this year. And the French edition of Written in Red may come out this year as well.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Anne:   I’m having a wonderful time writing about the Others, and I’m very glad you’re all having just as much fun reading the stories.

TRC:   Thank you, Anne for giving us an update on Murder of the Crows, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.  It was a pleasure having you visit us again.

Description:

After winning the trust of the terra indigene residing in the Lakeside Courtyard, Meg Corbyn has had trouble figuring out what it means to live among them. As a human, Meg should be barely tolerated prey, but her abilities as a cassandra sangue make her something more.

The appearance of two addictive drugs has sparked violence between the humans and the Others, resulting in the murders of both species in nearby cities. So when Meg has a dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard—Lakeside’s shape-shifting leader—wonders whether their blood prophet dreamed of a past attack or of a future threat.

As the urge to speak prophecies strikes Meg more frequently, trouble finds its way inside the Courtyard. Now the Others and the handful of humans residing there must work together to stop the man bent on reclaiming their blood prophet—and stop the danger that threatens to destroy them all.

Review:

Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop is the 2nd book in her The Others series.  I love all of Anne’s books, and this series is not any different.  The Others is a different and fascinating story about the terra indigene (non humans, such as wolves, crows, vampires, elementals, grizzlies, etc) who control most of the world, and the humans, good and bad who live in lands The Others allow humans to live on.  The main storyline is a young woman, who is a blood prophet and lives among the terra indigene.  In case you have not read my review of the first book (Written In Red), a blood prophet is someone who must cut themselves to see the future. Written in Red introduces us to Meg and her arrival in the Lakeside courtyard where humans were minimal, as we discovered more about her, and how the others learned to care very much for this human, and how far they would go to protect her as one of their own.  Murder of Crows continues with these fabulous people we have become invested in.  Meg, Simon, Nathan, Tess, Vlad, Winter, Monty, Merri, and so many more wonderful and new characters that Anne has created in this fantastic world.

Though this is not a romance, Simon finds himself caring more and more about Meg, whom he cannot seem to stay away from;  but it concerns him, since he is non human, and should not care about any human.  They are just friends at this point, perhaps in the next book, this friendship will change.   But in Murder of Crows the story is two fold.  An evil group is killing crows or any other non human. The Others are determined to protect Meg, as well as stop the attacks; they concentrate on using Meg’s prophecies or clues to find the Enemy. The story is tense at times, with all the threats and unrest.

I cannot tell too much, since I do not want to give spoilers.  Only to say I loved this book, and the entire series. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book, which is a year away.  Just watching the others is fun, as you see them caring so much about “our Meg”; as well as learning some new and confusing things that humans do, which may or may not help them to understand humans better. This is so well done.  Simple things like flavored cookies for animals (wolves, etc) or humans taking notes is pretty funny.  It also helps the others form a workable relationship with some of the human police force to help find the enemies.

Murder of Crows is a fascinating world, deeply complex, with a fabulous cast of characters.  The story has everything, from fun, exciting, mysterious, tension and a wild climax.  But it does have an ending to this storyline, that also addicts us to want to continue into the lives of Meg and The Others.  Again I have to say I love everything about Anne Bishop’s writing, and Murder of Crows was great.  I would suggest you to start with Written in Red, if you haven’t started this series yet, and do not wait.
