The guys stared at him with varying degrees of disbelief and annoyance—Sean, Mason, their two bodyguards, even Ryan wasn’t impressed. The one person who didn’t seem pissed was Blake, who sat on the couch across from him, legs crossed at the ankles and a knowing grin tilting his lips.

Reckless Weekend blurb“What are you smiling at?” Sean jutted his chin at Blake. “Did you get laid or somethin’?”

Blake shook his head. “I wish. I spent the last six days in Richmond with grumpy-ass here.” He jerked his thumb in Mason’s direction. “When I got home, Gabi was surfin’ the crimson tide, so I couldn’t get lucky if I tried.”

“So what’s with the smirk?” Ryan asked.

Blake outstretched his arms along the back of the lounge. “Can’t a guy be happy to spend quality time with his friends?”

“You know what’s on the list, don’t you?” Mitch asked, dread growing in his gut. Blake was the only person at the bachelor party who knew the honeymoon issues were fake. Yet there was something more to the gleam in his best friend’s eyes.

“Gabi may have given me a hint or two.” Blake turned his gaze to Mason. “And why the hell do you have your panties in a bunch about the Brazilian? Didn’t we put the same thing on the list for the ladies?”

“There’s a big fucking difference, bro,” Mason huffed. “Women get their shit waxed all the time.”

Sean cleared his throat. “I’ll do it.”

Stunned silence followed.

Mitch turned his attention to Sean along with everyone else in the room.

“What?” Sean frowned, lowering his gaze to the glass in his hands. “I’ve had it done before. No big deal.”

“You’ve had it done before,” Mason repeated, emphasizing the words with slow deliberation. “You’ve had the hair ripped from your balls, just for the hell of it?”

“It’s not like it’s all pain and no gain. I’ll get my pole smoked afterward.”

“Beauty therapists aren’t whores. You know that, right?” Ryan asked. “A blow job isn’t part of the deal.”

Sean shrugged. “They’ve never let me down before.”

“OK.” Blake drawled with widened eyes. “So we’ve determined who’ll get kicked out of the beauty salon first. What else is on the list?”

Til DeathLinks to order Til Death: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
Sixteen-year old Selena Fallon is a dreamer. Not a day-dreamer, but an I-see-the-future kind of dreamer. Normally this is not a problem as she has gotten pretty good at keeping her weird card hidden from everyone in her small town. Except from her best friend Kyle and her grandparents, of course. But when Selena dreams of her own rather bloody death, things get a little too freaky even for her.

Enter Dillan Sloan. Selena has seen the new guy in a different dream, and he is even more droolworthy in person. Beyond the piercing blue eyes and tousled dark hair, there is something else that draws her to him. Something…electric. Unfortunately, Dillan makes it more than clear that he does not feel the same. They just met, so why would he act like he hates her?

When Dillan and Selena are forced together one weekend to work on a school project, Selena prepares to be ignored as usual. But when she stumbles across a few undead in the backyard, Dillan comes to her rescue and reveals a whole lot more. Not only is he part of a society that hunts otherworldly creatures…she is too. And she is being targeted by a force bigger and darker than anything she ever imagined. Despite her death dream, Selena is not going to give up easy, especially when she discovers that Dillan might not actually hate her after all

Review:
Til Death is the first novel in The Fractured Soul series by Kate Evangelista.
Selena Fallon is a normal high school teenager in small town Wyoming, living with her grandparents. Her life is pretty unremarkable except for the fact that she sees the future in her dreams.  She has worked hard at keeping this little secret quiet – only her best friends
and grandparents know the truth.  Until Mr. tall, dark and annoying comes along –
Dillan Sloan.

Dillan Sloan has been stripped of his ranking in the Illumenari. He has made a
critical mistake and now must pay for it.  He has been sent to Wyoming to do his time
with his Uncle Ranier.  Dillan has a cocky, holier than thou attitude right from the get go.
He is rude with everyone he comes in contact with. Until he meets Selena and shakes
her hand – then sparks fly!   That handshake puts into motion a relationship unlike
no other.

From page one of this book you jump right in.  Your mind reeling to catch up
and understand what is going on.  I found myself wanting to know everything
about the Illumenari and what supernatural things are lurking in the shadows.

I found the relationship between Dillan and Selena a tad tedious at first –
but had to remind myself that Selena is in high school and then the understanding
of it all fell into place.  Once the understanding fell into place the relationship
manifests itself quite nicely. Selena is sarcastic and humorous and I laughed out
loud at her at times! And Dillans’ cockiness and abruptness left me wanting more.
Put the two of them together and sparks are bound to fly.  The sub-characters
were quite wonderful and well written and I look forward to delving hopefully
more into their stories.  This was the first story I have read that involved a Manticore
and I found it quite fascinating.   After researching this creature more on my
own – I had hoped that the story would touch on it more.  This is a fast paced
story filled with many original and wonderful ideas.  I absolutely look forward to
reading book two.

Part 1 starts with Natalie Porter hanging out in a college bar with friends doing normal college kid things. However, when Natalie decides to hit on a guy, a hot Russian guy, who walks into the bar, she has no idea how much her life will change in that moment. Of course, the guy shoots her down and Natalie tucks tail and goes back to her table and then decides to head home. She has a lot on her plate. Even though she loves her adoptive parents, she has secretly been trying to find her birth father. She feels that something is lacking in her life and has hired a private detective to search for her.

And, oh how things start rolling once she gets home. Seems that her father is alive and well, and, oh year, a mafia boss in Russia. The big problem with that, other than the obvious, is now that she’s been nosing around, her father’s enemies will move heaven and earth to get to her to use as leverage against him. Enter Sevastyan, her father’s number one, who has been kept Natalie under surveillance for the past month, making sure that no one makes a move against her. Once he reaches her house, he literally tells her that her father has sent for her and they’re heading to Russia. Like, now. And, within the hour, she is on a plane headed to meet her father. And, it doesn’t take long for the sparks to fly between Natalie and Sevastyan.

Once they reach Russia, the meeting between she and her father is touching. She finds out pretty quickly that there is more to this man than meets the eye. And she is already so enthralled with Sevastyan that her father decides to set some boundaries……….. Oh, but boundaries are made to be broken. And, when she starts meeting others at the compound, some warm to her, some not so much. Oh yeah, Sevastyan decided that no one else will have her……..

Part 2: Natalie and Sevastyan are drawn to each other, but he doesn’t think that the virginal Natalie can handle his true self. Seems he tends to lean towards BDSM, but when Natalie jumps at the chance to experience those things, he gives in to her a little…….. Things are tense between them once they arrive back at her father’s house, due to Sevastyan putting distance between them. But when Natalie’s distant cousin, Filip starts showing a little too much interest, Sevastyan steps in. Poor Natalie doesn’t know which way to turn. Sevastyan is so hot and cold and it’s driving her nuts. However, a series of events sets things in motion that cause Sevastyan to have to whisk Natalie away in order to save her life……….Because, the enemies of her father? They are coming……

PART 3:  Release Date  January 20, 2014

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

Part 3: Once Natalie and Sevastyan are safe in Paris, they embark upon testing out their relationship. This is definitely not for the faint of heart!! He introduces her to things that she’s read about, and truth be told, fantasized about. But Sevastyan still is cold and distant at times. When Natalie finally realizes why he is away so much during the day, she doesn’t know if she should be happy or pissed. Seems he’s been taking care of business for her and not sharing the information with her….. How’s she supposed to trust him if he won’t trust her? She’s already trusted him with her body, but can she give her soul over as well? Well, big team, you’ll have to read to find out…….And, oh, what a read it is…..

To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure about this series when I first saw that Kresley Cole was venturing into another romance genre. She is, after all, one of my favorite paranormal romance authors. But, she pulled it off. Both characters were well written. Natalie is a little dynamo. She is secure in who she is and what she wants, and I really loved the scenes between she and her father. Now, for Sevastayn. He is hot incarnate. I mean, really? A tattooed Russian mafia bodyguard? What’s not to love?? Even though I know that his nature is to brood and be introverted, he did get on my nerves at times. But, the chemistry between the two of them was off the charts. And the fact the he was so conflicted at times really tugged at my heartstrings.

There was one big surprise in Part 2 that I totally did NOT see coming. I was literally saying to myself “what in the hell………..”. Even though I didn’t like said surprise, it did enhance the story, as it is Natalie and Sevastyan’s story that she was telling. If you’re looking for an erotic romance that starts with a bang, and a hot Russian to boot, this one is definitely for you!!

MODEL POSITION by Kitsy Clare

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 20, 2014

For Sienna, love and art are perilous games. Is she ready to take that gamble?

Sienna is a beautiful, talented artist poised on the precipice of soaring into the glamorous, yet cutthroat Manhattan art scene.

Dave Hightower is a hooked-up, handsome heir to the hippest gallery in NYC, Gallery Hightower.

Erik is the live drawing model with his sizzling green eyes fixed only on Sienna.

Three’s a crowd, so Sienna must make a choice: date Dave and ride the fast track to landing a show at Gallery Hightower and hobnobbing with the art glitterati, or follow her heart and take a chance with Erik, the stunning male model who’s stealing her heart. But Erik has some worrisome secrets, and who in their right mind would make live modeling their career?

Dare Sienna throw away her chances of hitting it big to follow her heart?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: MODEL POSITION is a new adult, contemporary romance novella by Kitsy Clare focusing on graduate art student Sienna and the two men in her life. Dave Hightower is the heir to the Hightower Art Gallery and Erik is a model and painter whose beauty is not lost on any of the classroom students.

Kitsy Clare pulls the reader into a short story of one woman and her chance to make it big in the world of artists and graphic arts. When Dave offers to introduce Sienna to the woman in charge of one of the most prestigious galleries Sienna jumps at the chance only to realize that perhaps her relationship with Dave is not what is seems. When she finds herself inexplicably attracted to the latest model, Sienna must chose between what she knows she wants and what she know is right-but are the two inseparable?

MODEL POSITION is a quick and simple romantic read. There is no graphic sex or graphic language but there is an undeniable attraction between Sienna and Erik that will make your heart flutter. This is a story of attraction; about two people who know what they want and they want one another. The sexual tension builds with every encounter and you can almost feel the desire and burn.

The characters are likeable even Dave and his misguided intensions; you understand the attraction, the anxiety and the building romance between Sienna and Erik; and you can sympathize with the misdirected feelings between two people when the future is on the line. Although there are two men vying for Sienna’s heart, this is not a true love triangle storyline-there is none of the indecision or angst in the choice; there is no drama or internal fight-Sienna knows her heart and her heart wants only one man.

If you like a cute, romantic storyline where everyone gets his or her HEA then MODEL POSITION is the perfect read for a lazy afternoon.

Interview

TRC: Hi Kitsy and welcome to The Reading Café.

Kitsy: Well, hello to you too!

TRC: We’d like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website / Facebook/ Goodreads/ Twitter

Kitsy Clare 2Kitsy: I started out as an artist, attending art school, though I was always writing seriously on the side—always! Eventually I realized that I was much more interested in writing, and at that point, I did an MFA in creative writing. I sold my thesis to Random House! It was my first YA (Refugees). I live in NYC but I’m from Philadelphia and I go back to hang out there often.

TRC: You also write YA novels under the name Catherine Stine. Do you have plans for a new release in 2014?

Kitsy: Yes, I’ve written a YA magical realist/horror tale inspired by Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray. My novel, Dorianna, has a female lead. It’s a cautionary tale for the Internet Generation, and it has a smoking love triangle. ☺ Look for it in fall 2014.

TRC: Which genre do you believe is easier to write and why? Or do they each have individual challenges?

Kitsy: YA lit is focused on the teen coming of age, with first kiss/crush and interactions with high school friends and rivals. New Adult lit is more about finding one’s place in the larger world with first long-term love, first full-time job, figuring out one’s career and where to settle down. New adult is also very focused on the love relationship, yet it is not simply YA with more sex. It’s about finding one’s identity in the world in large part through dealing with a serious relationship. Right now I like the ability to delve more deeply into a love relationship that NA offers, but I enjoy writing for both age groups.

Model PositionTRC: Model Position is your February 2014 contemporary, New Adult release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Kitsy: Because I went to art school, and I showed my paintings in NYC, I have many story ideas featuring artists and the inside scoop on the art world, which I think people are quite curious about. Plus artists are sexy risk-takers who are often very colorful personalities!

Here’s the story summary of Model Position:

In Manhattan’s glitzy gallery scene love and art are perilous games. Will Sienna dare to play?

TRC: Are any of the characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Kitsy: My characters are always an amalgam of the real and the imagined. For instance, Sienna from Model Position shares my early awe and intimidation with the art world, and then I added in a neat-freak quirk that makes it hard for her to dive into the actual mess of oil painting! One of Sienna’s dates, Dave Hightower is inspired by a familiar artist type, but with an added dash of family money and impeccable clothing thrown in. The gallery owner, Lydia is based on some scary, narcissistic dealers I knew! Not mentioning any names…

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Kitsy: Erik, the live drawing model would be Charlie Hunnam (from Sons of Anarchy).

Sienna, the main character would be Evan Rachel Wood or Carey Mulligan.

Dave Hightower, the rich artist would be James Marsden or Adam Brody.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Kitsy: My favorite thing is to create lots of plot twists and spicy surprises. You don’t have to sacrifice believability if you write in a compelling, honest way that inspires readers to invest in the story.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a panster (write by the ‘seat of your pants’)?

Kitsy: When I first started out I didn’t outline. Now I always do; it saves a lot of time in the long run, and it’s wise to know where your story is going. That said, the story takes turns that even I didn’t expect! When that happens I revise my outline—nothing super-detailed, just a spare road map.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Kitsy: My characters sometimes step out of my outline and start to act and speak in unexpected ways. For instance, in my YA futuristic thriller, Ruby’s Fire, the guy I planned for Ruby to get together with was not who she ended up with! Yet, it was an organic change that made total sense.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Kitsy: A writer’s first job is to entertain. A writer’s second task is to pull a reader in through the characters’ emotions. I tell my students when I teach workshops that each scene must have an emotional heart. This also holds true for the novel as a whole. Part of the craft is voice, and the other is the ability to make us care deeply about the fictional world. Sometimes the characters are too formulaic. But even if they are interesting, if there’s not enough action or high stakes to propel the story, we don’t care enough. One must examine plot, voice, character, stakes, all of it to diagnose issues and revise properly.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Kitsy: I don’t think I have it. I think often what folks call writers’ block is really the state of being where you’re in the process of starting a new project and you haven’t yet figured out enough of the plot to charge ahead with confidence. At those times I do something else—read, free-write, teach, travel. I start in again once I’ve figured out the plot in my head.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kitsy: I discuss story ideas with friends who enjoy talking plotlines, and my writers’ group who also does retreats together. We sit around and babble on about kinds of crazy plot ideas. It’s fun!

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Kitsy: I’m working on the second new adult romance novella in the Art of Love series, of which Model Position is the first. Sienna gets an internship with an edgy, super-rich, very difficult artist named Casper (Caz) Mason. I love working on it because you never know what Caz will do next, and how Sienna will react! It’s called Private Internship. I’m hoping it’ll be out later this year, so I recommend you read Model Position in order to be up to date with Sienna’s world.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kitsy: Just a big, warm thank you for inviting me to be interviewed today! I had fun.

Description:
For fans of Allison Brennan and Karen Rose comes Carey Baldwin, a daring new name in suspense, with the story of a serial killer out for blood—and the only woman who can stop his reign of terror.

They say the Santa Fe Saint comes to save your soul—by taking your life.

Newly minted psychiatrist Faith Clancy gets the shock of her life when her first patient confesses to the grisly Saint murders. By law she’s compelled to notify the authorities, but is her patient really The Saint? Or will she contribute to more death by turning the wrong man over to the police?

Faith is going to need all her wits and the help of a powerful adversary, Luke Jericho, if she’s to unravel the truth. But she doesn’t realize she’s about to become an unwitting pawn in a serial killer’s diabolical game: For once he’s finished with Faith, she’ll become his next victim.

Review:

Carey Baldwin…your genius is showing!  Family physician by day, it’s no easy feat to excel, equally, in two different professions.  Ms. Baldwin does it with panache, and thankfully doesn’t show signs of slowing down.  The doctor can tell a story, can impress you with her intellect, can scare the crap out of you…can make you swoon.  Confession encompasses them all!  Dr. Faith Clancy is trying to establish a reputation for herself, as well as a life, with the loss of her parents and sister, who incidentally was the wife of widower, Detective Danny Benson from Ms. Baldwin’s First Do No Evil (read review here).  Confession was fantastic!  Hardly a surprise, as I have come to expect no less from Carey Baldwin.  Now let’s find out who exactly is spilling the beans!

When Dante Jericho, Faith’s sole patient admits to being the Santa Fe Saint, a serial killer tormenting New Mexico, Faith calls the authorities, as dictated by law, to have him arrested.

The moment Dante said he would kill again, whether she believed him or not, she was morally and legally bound to report him to the police.  The statutes were clear on this matter.  If a patient presented a danger to others, doctor-patient confidentiality no longer applied.  She had a duty to warn.

And yet her expertise kicked in; trained to remain professional in the face of danger, and figure out a way to save them both.  That composure isn’t easy, it’s earned, and Ms. Baldwin clearly dips into her own vault of experience in clinical psychology to explain it concisely.   The intensity described (in various scenes) was never duplicated and always incorporated me as the third person in the situation; forced to hold my breath lest I betrayed my presence and jeopardized Faith’s position.  An engrossing read!

Problem is, Dante’s instability (I am assuming this generalization is acceptable, Dr. Baldwin?) has led him to “delusions of guilt”; to assume responsibility for actions that are not his.  Puzzling?  Without a doubt.  Diagnosing is left to Faith’s expertise, but Dante is suffering through enormous issues if he prefers to be incarcerated.  Ms. Baldwin is thorough in her research and gives Dr. Clancy all the proper tools to assess.  I may have had to re-read certain theories and diagnoses, but it’s tangibly written.  So where exactly does the swoon come in?  Trust me when I say Dante (and the real menace) only elicit goosebumps of the nightmare variety.  No, that honor goes to Luke Jericho, half brother of Dante.

“And one of the first things you’re going to learn about me is that I don’t mess around.  I don’t cajole.  I don’t persuade.  I don’t seduce.  Subterfuge isn’t in my nature.”  First his breath was in her hair, fogging up her brain.  Then he was whispering close in her ear, melting her like warmed sugar.  “When I see something I want, Faith, I don’t apologize.  I just go get it.”

I know you’ve swooned, don’t pretend.  🙂  Might as well get comfy with a pillow and luxuriate in all things Luke.

Determined to bridge the distance between Dante and himself (their backstory is heavy with guilt), Luke is going to align proper defense, including Faith, and make-up for the love and support that their father only bestowed upon his “legitimate” heir, Luke.  It doesn’t hurt that the attraction between our H/H is mutual and demanding exploration, but Luke insists on waiting until after Dante is exonerated; he won’t detract or become a distraction if it means Dante’s life is forfeit.  Luke does TOO good a job staying platonic, IMO, lol, but it laid the foundation of communication and trust.  And when it happens…well…Carey Baldwin knows a thing, or twenty, about steam, my friends.  😉

A suspenseful thriller to the very end.  Twists were tangled up in twists!  Outbursts were swallowed by gasps!  And even when you came to suspect where the finger would point, you’re devouring every last word to ensure the guilty would stay guilty (or die!)  I’m deliberately being vague – you’ve got to read Confession (and read who’s making it).

And so I’ve reached my least favorite part, the bittersweet ending.  Not of the book itself!  Oh, I’ll be thinking about Confession for days, raving and recommending to all who will listen (you’ve read this far, go buy the book!), but you at least have the joy of discovering more of Ms. Baldwin’s work.  I have to wait for the next installment of Baldwin bliss.  I loved Confession!!!!

KISSING WITH FANGS (Flirting With Fangs #3) by Ashlyn Chase

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 4, 2014

Claudia Fletcher has her MBA and a stellar resume, so when the bar she manages burns down, she could easily move on to bigger and better things. But something about the bar owner, Anthony Cross makes it impossible to leave.

Anthony has never let on to the general public that he’s a vampire, and most of his staff members have no idea Boston Uncommon was a safe gathering place for supernaturals of all kinds. Now that it’s nothing but ash, the tentative peace among warring factions is starting to crumble. The last thing he wants to do is put Claudia in danger, but he also knows there’s no way he can let her go…

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: KISSING WITH FANGS is the third instalment in Ashlyn Chase’s paranormal, adult, romance series Flirting With Fangs-a spin off from her Strange Neighbors Trilogy. Although this is the third in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty-most of the previous storyline and series characters play minor to major roles in the story. The one thing in common is BOSTON UNCOMMON-the paranormal bar managed by our heroine Claudia Fletcher and owned by our hero Anthony Cross.

Following the devastating blaze that destroyed the bar, Claudia Fletcher disappears from Anthony’s life. Anthony is a vampire and Claudia is one of the rare humans who was once employed by Boston Uncommon and she knew nothing about the paranormal crowd or their connections to her boss and the man with whom she had fallen in love. When Anthony finally tracks her down, Claudia has a secret she believes will destroy Anthony’s faith in everything that she is.

Anthony Cross is a vampire who was turned several centuries earlier. The paranormal world must keep their identity secret from the human world but it becomes increasingly difficult trying to blend into a world where humans are willing to expose you for a price. When shifters and witches begin to disappear, Anthony and his friends begin a search for the people responsible only to discover that he may have lead them directly to his front door. When he and Claudia embark on a new business adventure together, the people hoping to take them down may have uncovered another hub of paranormal activity.

Anthony and Claudia’s relationship has been developing for close to five years but have ignored the proverbial elephant in the room-their mutual attraction to one another. But Anthony’s secret must remain hidden otherwise he will feel the wrath of Gaia and in doing so, places Claudia’s life in danger from a woman from Anthony’s past.

Kissing With Fangs is the final instalment in the Flirting With Fangs trilogy but there are many more stories to tell and I hope Ashlyn has a story for everyone. If you like a storyline with a little bit of mystery, suspense, romance and sex, then Flirting With Fangs is the read for you.The characters are colorful; their stories of finding love while struggling to survive will pull you in.The world building continues throughout the series with the familiarity of previous storyline characters and scenarios. Anthony and Claudia are definitely relatable –Claudia with her demons and Anthony with his secrets.

My excerpt-sharing virtual tour for Kissing with Fangs continues today, here on The Reading Café! If readers are interested in catching up with what has already been posted, be sure to check the schedule below!

To set up today’s scene: Claudia Fletcher has her MBA and a stellar resume, so when the bar she manages burns down, she could easily move on to bigger and better things. But her secret love for the bar owner, Anthony Cross makes it impossible.

Anthony has never let on to the general public that he’s a vampire, and most of his staff members have no idea Boston Uncommon was a safe gathering place for supernaturals of all kinds. Now that it’s nothing but ash, the tentative peace among hostile factions is starting to crumble. And damned if every paranormal’s worst fear is coming true. A group of human brainiacs have captured and begun experimenting on them.

Scene 6:
Anthony’s flashback to the early days of his now ruined bar.

Almost five years ago, Anthony had been chatting with Claudia in his office when a loud crash came from the bar. Voices shouted and another crash followed.

They charged out of the office, tripping over each other. A bar brawl was in progress, with one gentleman clearly getting the worst end of it. The bouncer, Kurt, jumped between them and pushed. The guys stumbled back a few feet but came at each other with renewed vigor.

Anthony was removing his jacket when Kurt called out, “Stay where you are. I’ve got this.”

He took down the guy who reached him first and sat on him. Just as the other one was about to take advantage of the situation, another customer tackled the guy, rose, and tucked him under his arm like a football.

“Where do you want this one?” he asked Kurt.

Kurt got up and yanked his guy off the floor by his belt. “You toss that one out the back, and I’ll send this one headfirst out the front door onto the sidewalk.”

The helpful customer simply nodded, carried the stunned fighter to the back exit, opened the door, and tossed him into the alley.
Meanwhile, Kurt opened the front door, and despite the guy’s loud protest, did what he said he’d do…sent the other fighter sprawling onto the sidewalk.

As the helpful, yet unfamiliar, customer returned, Anthony stuck out his hand.

“Thanks for your help.”

“Anytime.” He grasped Anthony’s hand and shook it. “Are you the owner?”

“Yes. Anthony Cross. And you are?”

“Tory Montana.”

Someone at the bar whirled around on his stool and said, “Tory Montana. I thought you looked familiar. You played for the Steelers, right? What are you doing in Boston?”

Tory tucked his hands in his pockets. “House-sitting for friends. I’m flattered you remember me. I retired in 2006.”

“Seriously?” As the two customers began a conversation, Anthony strolled over to Kurt, who was setting a chair upright.

“What happened?”

Kurt shrugged. “To be honest, nothing. They just walked in here and started throwing punches like they’d already been having an argument.

Anthony lowered his voice. “Montana’s freakishly strong, if you know what I mean. Maybe we should invite him to the back booth for a free beer—and careful discussion.”

“I read you loud and clear, boss.”

And that’s how the coyote shapeshifter became Anthony’s second bouncer.

If she survives, the world will know she’s innocent.

Locked up with nine notorious and potentially psychotic criminals, Evalyn must fight the prison and dismantle her past to stay alive. But the system prized for accuracy appears to be killing at random.

She doesn’t plan on making friends.

She doesn’t plan on falling in love, either

Review:

The Wicked We Have Done by Sarah Harian is the first book in her new adult dystopian  thriller, Chaos Theory series. When asked to review this book, I thought the premise sounded interesting, and decided to give it a try. I was totally surprised to find myself immediately hooked and unable to put this book down until the very end. If this is Sarah Harian’s debut novel, please please count me in for the next one and thereafter, as this is a magical beginning to a wonderful career.

The Wicked We Have Done is a story of survival and redemption in a futuristic world.  Not quite like the Hunger Games, though with a survival theme very similar.  This is a story with young people who have been convicted of a major crime, who are given a choice; immediate death penalty or accept a one month stay in The Compass Room. If they survive, they will go free, but the percentage of survival is slimmer then none.  The Compass Room is even scarier than the arena in the Hunger Games.  This was a thriller a minute, and though these characters, many of whom were bad to the bone; some of the others you found yourself caring very much for, as you prayed and rooted for the their survival.

Evalyn Ibarra is our heroine, who is the major focus of this story.  Evalyn committed a terrible crime, and is considered a terrorist, and very much hated.  But is Evalyn truly guilty?  Throughout the book, there are some flash backs, as we find out what really happened, and why.   From the start, when we meet Evalyn, we find ourselves becoming attached to her, as we watch her say goodbye to her little 5 year old brother, who was adorable and precious.  Evalyn’s strong love for her brother stood out.  Allowing us to ask ourselves, “can you truly be capable of such love, and yet be a cold blooded murderer”? We knew there was something more behind it, as we anxiously waited to find out more.

When taken away, Evalyn travels with the other criminals who are going to The Compass Room, and before they reach their destination, a video is shown describing each of their crimes.  To tell too much more would be giving too many spoilers. But I will say that Harian gives us some fantastic characters; Evalyn is awesome; Casey, was mean at the start, but turned into an equally awesome hero; Valerie, was totally unlikeable when we first meet her, but she too turned out to be great; Jace, Tanner, were also very good, and the unredeemable characters were written very well.  Harian had us glued to our seat, as each of them in The Compass Room must face their past, and find a way to survive against the odds, at the same time prove that they can be redeemed.  Will Evalyn survive?  Is there life after The Compass Room?

The Wicked We Have Done is a totally different story of survival, in a terrifying race to the finish.  Harian pulls quite a bit of our emotions in this exciting story, filled with nonstop action & great characters; while reading we range from emotional, scary, sad,  and very very intense. Within this tense story, there is a budding romance that at first you could not imagine, but turned out to be a beautiful slow to build relationship.  I cannot wait for the next book in this series.  Sarah Harian is an excellent writer, and I can look forward to more of the same in the future.

Sarah Harian 2

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Sarah Harian to discuss her debut novel.

Welcome to The Reading Café, Sarah.   Having read The Wicked We Have Done, I was completely in awe of your writing in your first book!  We are happy to do this interview and learn more about all things Sarah Harian.

Sarah: So glad I could share it with you. Thank you!

TRC:  Please tell us something about yourself?  Have you always been interested in writing?

Sarah:  I’ve been writing since I was eight. I was super into Nancy Drew as a kid, so naturally I started a novel about twins who discovered a secret tunnel in their basement. When I was older I got really into fan fiction. I kept trying to write a novel of my own but was always too impatient to get past the first 50 pages or so. Finally, when I was twenty, I finished my first book. So yes, I’ve always been interested in writing. The writing part sucks (haha) but I absolutely love creating stories.

TRC: Tell us how you came up with the idea of your Chaos Theory series?

Sarah:  Most of my ideas are wilderness-based because I love nature and the mountains. I also have a weird obsession with either combining technology and nature or pitting them against each other. I knew I wanted to do this in Chaos Theory, but I also wanted to write something that was both thrilling and emotional. I’m a huge fan of LOST and was re-watching the series when I came up with the idea, and the show inspired me a lot.

TRC: The Wicked We Have Done, the first book in this series, is your debut novel.  Can you share with us your reaction when you found out your book was being published?

Sarah:  I was actually hiking when my agent called me and had no service. It wasn’t until I was driving back into town that I got her voicemail and emails that all said “Call me!!!” I was having heart palpitations until I found a place on the side of the road where I had enough signal to hold a call. I’m pretty sure I just said, “Okay,” when she told me the news because I was in a state of shock, but my hiking partner/BFF was sitting next to me and could hear everything, and she started having a silent freak out, which was amusing to say the least.

TRC:  Can you please tell us the general premise for your Chaos Theory series? Also, how many books do you anticipate for this series?

Sarah : The Chaos Theory series is about a near-future world where scientists can predict the moral compass of an individual through readings of emotions and hormones. When criminals are convicted of a crime, they’re tested in order to see if their evil doing was a one-time act, or if they’re truly wicked. The wicked are killed in a Compass Room–a technologically-advanced prison that measures morality when inmates are faced with simulations of their crime.

Currently, the series consists of two novels and a novella.

The Wicked We Have Done

TRC:  Please give us a brief description of The Wicked We Have Done?

Sarah:  Twenty-two-year-old Evalyn Ibarra is sent to a Compass Room after being convicted of shooting up her school. While faced with terrifying illusions of what she’s done, she also makes friends with fellow inmates, and ends up fighting to save their lives.

TRC:  What was the most fun/most difficult scene to write in The Wicked We Have Done?

Sarah:  The most fun scene, and one of my favorites, is the scene where Evalyn paints a sky on Casey’s chest. I love writing foreplay and it is both an odd and sexy scenario.

The hardest scene was a death scene (I won’t be specific because I don’t want to give anything away). For being the author of a book with a lot of death in it, I actually hate thinking about death and writing it. I end up crying a lot and need to take constant breaks. It’s pretty pathetic.

TRC:  A Vault of Sins is your 2nd book in the Chaos Theory, which is set for a September, 2014 release.   Can you tell us anything about this sequel?

Sarah:  I can’t say a whole lot, but I can say that the book is going to be about choosing the harder path when faced with tough decisions, even when you aren’t obligated to. It’s also going to be about Evalyn coping with being a nationally-hated figure and how she chooses to handle the darkness that her public image brings her.

TRC:  The Chaos Theory is a dystopian New Adult book. Do you have any desire to write other genres?

Sarah:  I write Young Adult as well as New Adult. I really love speculative fiction and plan on sticking with writing science fiction/fantasy/horror, etc.

TRC:  Can you tell us what are you currently working on?

Sarah: I’m currently working on a Chaos Theory novella that’s slated for August. It’s going to be in Valerie’s point of view. I’m very excited about it.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you like to outline your story before you start? Do you have a specific place you like to write?

Sarah:  I usually write on my couch, at a café, or on my patio. I tend to do a very bare-bones outline before starting, but nothing more. Then I just write—well, word vomit would be a more appropriate term. I don’t even know the characters yet or what scene is going to come after the one I’m writing. My first drafts are atrocious, and I end up rewriting the entire book. But it’s a necessary part of my process. I hate following strict outlines because they leave me no room to consider what could be. TWWHD went through probably ten drafts and one complete rewrite.

TRC:  Many authors have friends or family, that they bounce ideas and information back and forth.  Do you have anyone you like to discuss your story with?

Sarah:  I have an army. I’m a very needy writer. Lucky I’m blessed with several AMAZING critique partners that will listen to me and help me figure things out. I believe strongly that every writer needs this sort of support base, as well as people who are willing to give brutally honest feedback.

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Sarah:  These were awesome questions! Thanks so much for having me!

SILENCE OF THE WOLF (Heart of the Wolf #13) by Terry Spear

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 4, 2014

Gray werewolf Tom Silver is determined to find the wolves who have been attacking local livestock. While tracking the pack through the Rockies, a blizzard forces him into a remote cabin where he hears a plane crash nearby.

When he discovers the sole survivor is a beautiful female werewolf/coyote shifter mix, bound as a prisoner, he knows it’s his duty to hide her. Now, they are both at risk as a search ensues for the missing prisoner.

Will Tom be able to protect this beautiful stranger while tracking down the wolves responsible for terrorizing the local livestock?

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SILENCE OF THE WOLF is the thirteenth instalment in Terry Spear’s adult Heart of the Wolf paranormal series and can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty or confusion. Many of the previous storyline characters play secondary roles in this particular novel but their previous history is not as important to the overall premise.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF follows photographer and wolf-coyote shifter Elizabeth Wildwood as she is on the hunt for the people who killed her parents. Shunned for her hybrid genetics, neither the wolf nor coyote families would accept her breeding, Elizabeth begins her search in Silver Town, near the Rocky Mountains. What Elizabeth doesn’t expect to find is the man who would one day be her mate-Gray werewolf Tom Silver-brother to the local alpha.

The story finds Elizabeth the target of an unknown threat. Attacks, theft and an abduction all point to random acts but Elizabeth knows there is someone hoping to remove her permanently from this life. Enter Tom Silver-her hero and the man who would die to protect his mate.

The relationship between Tom and Elizabeth is slow to build. The attraction is mutual; there is none of the angst of rejection of not wanting a mate; but there are secrets from Elizabeth’s past that continue to haunt her daily life. Terry Spear writes a storyline where the leading couple are mature enough to realize when they have found the one- without the anxiety of rejection and hostility towards a happily ever after.

Terry Spear pulls the reader into a Rocky Mountain adventure through the snow covered forests and the backwoods of Silver Town, USA. There is action and suspense; hatred and love; betrayal and forgiveness. If you like a storyline with a little romance, a little sex, a little suspense and a whole lotta shifters, SILENCE OF THE WOLF and the Heart of the Wolf series by Terry Spear is a welcome addition to any personal library.

Silence of the Wolf: The Heroine’s Journey

In my wolf tales, each of the characters, hero and heroine, have their own journey. In answering the question of whether red wolves or gray wolves came first, I wanted to share the story of a shifter who is not all wolf or coyote, but a mix of the two.

It’s interesting to note that not only have mythology about werewolves been present for over the centuries, so has the Coyote trickster god, of Native American cultures. Gray wolves and coyotes do mix. Red wolves and coyotes mix. It’s a matter of need. If a wolf is without a mate, and a coyote doesn’t have a pack and they hook up, a coywolf is created. Or something else.

DNA proves this is so. It’s not just a myth. So what if a woman is a mix of coyote and wolf? I base my stories on the real thing, so it definitely could be. Now, do wolves kill coyotes that come into the wolf pack’s territory? Yes. They prey on the same animals and so the wolves are at the top of the food chain when it comes to coyotes encroaching on their territory.

I watched a video where a group of wolves were resting under some trees and a coyote walked into their territory without realizing the danger he was in. The wolves smelled the coyote, and took off after him. He was really lucky and escaped with his life. And this is the basis of my story for the heroine. She’s unaccepted by her own wolf pack, and her coyote family won’t take her in either, fearing she might be alpha enough because of her wolf half to take over.

When she arrives in Silver Town to do a story on the ski resort, that’s only her cover. She intends to prove that her uncle murdered her parents. But her uncle has no intention of letting her prove anything to his pack and that means she could very well be the next of his victims.

I was watching a program about a fox that was kicked out of her pack. She traveled thousands of miles from her home in England, which usually is a death knell for a fox alone. But they had monitored her movement for a year. She is a survivor.

That is what Elizabeth Wildwood is—a heroine with a knack for surviving, even without the support of any packs. When the Silver pack welcomes her with open arms, Tom Silver more than anyone in the pack, she realizes that not all wolf packs, or at least this one, are the same. All they care about is her safety and well-being. This is really hard for a woman to accept who has been shunned by her own kind all her life.

It makes her a loner, yet she wants so badly what Tom and his family have—love and acceptance. But she won’t risk his pack’s own safety because of the mess she’s in with her family. And that is Elizabeth’s story.

What do you think the Silver pack would say to that? If you were Tom, what would you say to that?

~~Terry~~
