Description:

With the legends and lore of Ireland running through his blood, falconer Connor O’Dwyer is proud to call County Mayo home. It’s where his sister, Branna, lives and works, where his cousin, Iona, has found true love, and where his childhood friends form a circle that can’t be broken…

A circle that is about to be stretched out of shape—by a long-awaited kiss.

Meara Quinn is Branna’s best friend, a sister in all but blood. Her and Connor’s paths cross almost daily, as Connor takes tourists on hawk walks and Meara guides them on horseback across the lush countryside. She has the eyes of a gypsy and the body of a goddess…things Connor has always taken for granted—until his brush with death propels them into a quick, hot tangle.

Plenty of women have found their way to Connor’s bed, but none to his heart until now. Frustratingly, Meara is okay with just the heat, afraid to lose herself—and their friendship—to something more. But soon, Connor will see the full force and fury of what runs in his blood. And he will need his family and friends around him when his past rolls in like the fog, threatening an end to all he loves…

 Review:

Shadow Spell by Nora Roberts is the 2nd book in her The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy. In the first book in this series, Dark Witch, Branna, Connor, Iona, and their friends managed to hurt the evil sorcerer, Cabhan, very badly;  but they did not kill him.  The first book belonged to Iona, who moved to Ireland to learn about her Cousins, and her ancestry.  Iona fell in love with Boyle, a longtime friend of the Cousins O’Dwyer, and Iona also learned that she was a witch, and one of the three that was destined to fight Cabhan, after centuries of her ancestor’s unsuccessful attempts.

Shadow Spell belongs to Connor and Meara, whom we just knew in the first book, were meant for each other.  They just had to move past their longtime friendship, and discover their love for each other.  Throughout this continuation of the cousins working together with the help of the other three (Fin, Boyle & Meara) to defeat Cabhan, this story was also a beautiful romance between Connor and Meara.  It was special to watch Connor first discover he truly did love Meara.  Then to see Meara try fight off admitting she was in love with Connor, because of her fears…the memory of her father leaving her mother.

The beginning of the book spends time in the past, when the three children of Sorcha escaped Cabhan and mourned the death of their mother, who as she lay dying, passed over her powers to each of her children.  I thought since we knew the story from the first book, it was a bit slow to start for me.  Once they went to the present, it picked up and was good the rest of the way.

A few months have passed since the battle with Cabhan, and Connor is the first to come upon him; the others are warned, but it is Meara, who is very much in danger. Cabhan is using a shadow spell, which allows him to sneak up on them, and it is Meara, who is the main target.  Hurt Meara, you hurt Conner. Hurt Connor and you hurt the Circle of Three. So Cabhan lurks, sneaks, and attacks.Together they use protection spells to protect themselves until they come up with a plan to trick Cabhan, and destroy him once and for all.

What I loved about this book is the closeness and camaraderie of the 6 family and friends. I love all of Nora’s books set in Ireland.  I loved seeing them use their powers, and learn more about their descendants from as far back as the 1200’s.  I loved Connor and Meara together.  I adore Branna, and cannot wait for the third book, when she will be the main part of finally destroying Cabhan with Fin’s help.  Those two still love each other, despite Branna’s refusal to accept Fin, due to his blood relationship to Cabhan, even if Fin is one of the good guys.    I also enjoyed the animal familiars that protect them, the hawk, the horse and the hound.  They are a big part of this story.

How do I know that Branna and Fin will be the key to ending it all????     The Cousins O’ Dwyer trilogy is very similar to my favorite trilogy of Nora’s..Three Sisters Island.  Whereas it is different, and to me, not quite as good, there is so much that is similar. Of course, not to mention, that Branna and Fin are the only two left to pair up for the last, and as in Three Sisters Island, the strongest one (Branna) is saved for last.  🙂

Shadow Spell is another very good story for Nora Roberts, who always makes us want to travel to Ireland, as she describes it so well.  Her trilogies to me are her best stories, and Shadow Spell will continue the trend.  I am looking forward to the final book, Blood Magick.

Thirty years ago, on the date in June known as Midsummer’s Day, a young girl is mysteriously orphaned. Now, after a life of bizarre and troubling circumstances, she becomes obsessed with the idea that she too will die on Midsummer’s Day . . . until she meets the one man who may be able to save her

Azalea Lewis’s life has been dominated by coincidences-a bizarre, and increasingly troubling, series of chance events so perfectly coordinated that any sane person would conclude that only the hidden hand of providence could explain them.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: COINCIDENCE is a fictional storyline intertwined with a little bit of historical reality that focuses on the mathematical probability of events, chances and coincidences shaping the life of Azalea Yves Folley Lewis. The novel is told through flashbacks, memories, recounting of and current day events from just prior to Azalea’s birth to the end of the story.

COINCIDENCE is a story about the probability that the life altering events in one woman’s life all occur on the same date every ten years-Midsummer’s Day June 21. Thirty years ago, on June 21, a young child of approximately three to four years old is found wandering the empty fairgrounds and her mother’s whereabouts is never known-until a badly decomposed body washes up on shore more than one year later-but the two events are never connected-until now.

J.W. Ironmonger pulls the reader into the search for the truth. We follow as Azalea Yves’s young life is thrown into turmoil –from the death of her mother; to a life in Uganda with her adopted parents; and a struggle to survive in a country at war with itself. At thirty years of age, Azalea will ‘accidently’ meet a man who studies the probability of coincidences and they begin a relationship based on chances and the what-ifs and whys of life. We are witness to Azalea’s struggles to uncover the past-a past she knows nothing about-but a past that is interconnected to everything and everyone in her life.

COINCIDENCE is a philosophical look at chances and probabilities. The storyline is slow to develop as J.W. Ironmonger builds on the early events that are the catalyst of Azalea’s life. Once the scenario has been established, the reader is pulled into a story where the reality of the day is played out in the life of a young teenage girl hoping to survive against the odds. Fast forward twenty years when Azalea begins the journey back as she approaches the Midsummer’s Day-June 21 and whatever it has to offer.

J.W. Ironmonger has written a story of probabilities and mystery; what-ifs and whys; and never giving up. COINCIDENCE is a story that takes a philosophical look at fate and predestination-has your life been planned out by a higher power? Or is everything that happens just a matter of coincidence and accidental meetings?

Interview beige

TRC: Hi JW and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the February 2014 release of COINCIDENCE.

JW: Well thank you so much for having me. I feel greatly privileged to be talking to The Reading Café …

JW IronmongerTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Blog / Twitter

JW: I’m an Englishman, and I live in the beautiful rural county of Shropshire in England, along with my lovely wife Sue and our assortment of animals. I’ve always been a writer, but I’ve hidden it well. Writing success came, for me, in my fifties, so I’m making the very most of it now.

TRC: Your bio reads like a travel itinerary with stops throughout much of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. What are/were some of your favorite places to visit? To live?

JW: My father worked at Nairobi University, so I was born in Kenya. It was absolutely the most exciting place to grow up. When I was seventeen my family moved back to England. For me it was like a bereavement. I still miss East Africa – the noises, the colors, the smells …and of course the people. It has to be my favorite place to live.

I’ve been lucky to travel so widely. A few years ago I drove, with a friend, in a ‘banger rally,’ from London to the Gambia, through eight countries, and across the Sahara desert. That was my greatest adventure – until just a year or so ago, Sue and I travelled to Indonesia and became possibly the only travelers ever to have seen a Javan rhino and her calf. That was magical. But East Africa is still where my heart belongs.

TRC: How, if any, did your travels influence the premise of COINCIDENCE?

JW: When I was just sixteen I worked a vacation as a spanner-boy on building sites in the very north of Uganda. I’ve never forgotten the stunning beauty of this remote part of the world. I remember one night, sitting out on a veranda at a small mission school, drinking the local beer, discovering what an agreeable life the missionaries had made for themselves, and learning just how hard they were working with refugee children from Sudan. Not long after I left Uganda, the region became embroiled in a long civil war. I would watch with horror the rare news reports that made it to the West – stories of child soldiers, and brutal massacres. I would often wonder about that little mission school. How had it fared? This was very much in my mind when I sat down to write Coincidence. I used the mission school from my memory, and for me it became the heart of the novel; the place where the story would all end, for better or for worse.

CoincidenceTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of COINCIDENCE?

ORDER: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

JW: I’ve always been fascinated by coincidences. They happen to us all from time to time. When they do it’s tempting to imagine they’re part of some master-plan of the universe – proof perhaps that everything that happens, happens for a reason. That’s what Azalea Lewis believes. Her life has been affected by a series of unhappy coincidences, and she has discovered within them, a pattern, that she now thinks will lead to her inevitable death.

So Azalea consults an expert on Coincidences. He’s Thomas Post, a man who can explain every coincidence through simple mathematics. But what happens when two such different views of the universe meet? Can Thomas and Azalea get along? Could they fall in love? As the climax of Azalea’s coincidences draws closer, can she convince Thomas to believe her fears? This is a story about love, chance, death, and free will. Can we take control of our own destiny? And if we do, where might it lead us? That’s the story at the heart of ‘Coincidence’.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

JW: I wanted to make the coincidences in the story a surprise, even for readers who think they know what is coming. And I wanted the narrative to unravel in a non-linear way – so we learn about key events first, and then go back in time to see how they unfolded. Logistically this was a nightmare. I ended up with an enormous chart of events covering more than fifty years, but it did help me ensure that everything worked, in the way and on the days they were supposed to work.

I also wanted, in the story, to shine a light on the forgotten conflicts in Uganda, and on the character of Joseph Kony, whose murderous ‘Lords Resistance Army’ still operates in this part of Africa. I let Azalea grow up there, in the mission school of my memory, so her life could be touched by the troubles. I remember the region well from my own childhood, but in Coincidence the story would develop up to the present day. How much would this hidden corner of Africa have changed? In 2011, while writing the book, I went back to see, on a road trip with my son Jon. We searched for the mission school (unsuccessfully, alas) but we learned a lot, and the experience would inform the final chapter of the book

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

JW: Apart from the notorious Joseph Kony, who makes a brief appearance, all the characters are invented. They draw characteristics from people I know, but I couldn’t point to any one person and say he was the inspiration for Thomas, or she for Azalea. I made them up.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

JW: I love this question. Benedict Cumberbach would have to be Thomas. He has the right lugubrious English manner. Azalea needs to be striking, intelligent, and a natural redhead. I would insist on Jessica Chastain. Unless Rachel McAdams was available, of course.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

JW: In a novel about coincidence a writer can get away with some un-believability – but not too much. In the end, it was equally important for Thomas to be able to explain Azalea’s coincidences as it was for her to see them as pre-ordained. I hope that the characters and the situations are sufficiently grounded to keep the plot believable, and the situations unusual enough to keep the surprises coming, but in the end that has to be the reader’s call.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

JW: I go along with Laurence Sterne who said, “I begin with writing the first sentence — and trusting to Almighty God for the second.” I’ve found that as soon as my characters are on the page, they start asserting themselves – sometimes in the most unpredictable ways. It can play havoc with the plot, but what can you do? I’m little more than a witness and a reporter on my characters, and I rarely (if ever) tell them what to do.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

JW: I am in awe of writers who successfully carry this off. As a reader I want to care about the characters in the story, and that means living comfortably in each character’s skin as the story develops, seeing the world through their eyes, and feeling their hurts and emotions as they happen. It doesn’t have to be someone you identify with – I cried reading Black Beauty – and he was a horse. I don’t think there is a clever trick or a technique to help writers do this. I suspect it owes more to detailed craftwork, to creating honest consistent characters, and richly illustrated situations. When it happens, it is amazing. If I can ever achieve it as a writer, I would consider myself blessed.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

JW: I think if you’re suffering from writer’s bock, then you’re trying to write the wrong thing. Not every novel you start will develop into your masterpiece. Some will fail on the first page; others might run for several chapters before you swallow that difficult pill and accept that it isn’t working. That’s writing. I’ve learned that letting go of a project and starting a new one is sometimes the best thing you can do if you love writing. Once you find a voice and a story that works, it will write itself, and your writer’s block will vanish. My hard-drive is full of abandoned projects. Some of them are almost novel-length. That’s okay. I understand that if I’m not enjoying the writing, then readers won’t enjoy the reading.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

JW: I love my family dearly but I don’t share anything with them when it comes to writing, except, perhaps, for the vaguest outline, ‘ it’s a novel about coincidences,’ that’s about it. The idea of bouncing ideas off friends or fellow writers terrifies me. My wife, Sue, is the first to read anything I’ve written – but only the finished manuscript – never a sample chapter. I plan the story while I‘m walking my dog. So only me, my characters, and my dog, Poppy, are in on the secret.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

JW: I’ve just submitted the manuscript for my third novel, ‘Not Forgetting the Whale,’ the story of a village that seals itself off from a financial apocalypse, and the tale of the whale that lives in the bay. I’ll be starting edits on that book over the next few months. In the meantime I’m about quarter of the way through a fourth book. It’s called ‘Super-Recognizer.’ But more than that … ah well, you’ll have to wait and see.

When Angel’s life is threatened Vadim steps in and uses all his resources to end the threat once and for all. As the danger closes in, he lies to her in an effort to protect her, not realizing that even once the threat is eliminated, he might lose her anyway.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SWEETEST SURRENDER is the third instalment in Katie Reus’s –The Serafina: Sin City contemporary, romantic, suspense series focusing on the men and woman who work and live at the luxury Las Vegas casino The Serafina. Although this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone without too much difficulty. This is Angel and Vadim’s story.

Angel has been on the run for two years trying to escape a dark and dangerous past. Working as a waitress at The Serafina’s Cloud 9 restaurant, Angel believes herself to be safe. With few friends and no family, Angel’s true identity and her past had been hidden deep within the anonymity of a fake id. But Angel’s past would soon catch up and begin to affect the people that she has grown to love.

Vadim works high tech security for The Serafina and has been attracted to Angel since the day they met. Five months have passed and his attraction has grown deeper. With Angel’s life in danger, Vadim offers up his house-thus keeping Angel safe and close enough to spark the embers of growing love. It is only a matter of time before friendship turns to love but not before perceived betrayal threaten to push the couple apart.

SWEETEST SURRENDER is a friends to lovers storyline that focuses on the growing relationship between Vadim and Angel as well as the truth behind Angel’s secret life. Written from third person POV reflecting both Angel and Vadim’s side of the story, the world building continues from the previous books with the inclusion of former storyline characters and the familiarity of The Serafina. Angel and Vadim are mature, well rounded characters who fight their mutual attraction but, in the end, know that their HEA will come from the love they have for one another. The characters are likeable; the storyline and series are both captivating and addicting.

Katie Reus knows how to pull the reader into a storyline that is intense, provocative and passionate. You become one with the characters and experience the story and drama-up close and personal.

A cast of characters you will never forget. There’s Romance, Mystery, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, but most of all LOVE! You have a date tonight! Don’t forget I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS.

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW:  I’ll See You In My Dreams is one of the most unique and entertaining books I’ve read in quite awhile. The premise begins semi-unique but the twists and slant on the story line bring it fully on its own. Michael Edwin is a new author to me, but has made me a fan! Can’t wait for more by this enchantingly witty author.

There are chapter heading of songs, with a dream theme. I had no idea there were so many and certainly not so many that fit with this tale, just a little added inspiration.

It starts with an old man hitching a ride near a Texas cornfield, on his way to San Diego. A pretty ambitious undertaking when you learn he’s eighty-five! And get this, my friends, he’s going to see his girlfriend and get married; she’s eighty-four… got you interest yet?

While romance among the elderly is not a new thing, this is certainly a much more exciting one. I don’t do spoilers, but this was just so hard to put down. The story is told in different POV’s such as “Before the Journey”, “The Journey”, “After the Journey” and last but certainly not least, “A New Journey”.

What makes this such a wonderful read? Oh, so many things. Learning of his life before his wife died; living with his daughter and her family; his relationship with his second grandson; the lives he touches on his journey. The list could go on and on and on!
Here’s the really intriguing thing. He begins dreaming of an island and on this island he’s a young strong man again. Then he meets a woman, not just any woman (although he loved his wife with all his heart while she lived – she’s not the woman on the island, this perplexes him) his old sweetheart from high school. They begin a nightly, and sometimes more often, trip to their island and fall back in love.

They both know it’s a dream, but they love it! This is just the beginning!

That’s all the spoilers I’ll give out. Please, please read this marvelous tale for yourselves. This is one that must be enjoyed to be believed. This is thought provoking, entertaining and so incredibly surprising! I promise you won’t regret a minute of it.

Grab a bottle of your favorite beverage, some snacks (you won’t want to stop reading), and don’t forget a few tissues!

Enjoy, I certainly did! I’ll be looking for more from this author…

TRC: Hi Michael and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS.

Michael: Thank you, I’m excited. I’ve been following The Reading Café for a while now – very impressive.

Michael Edwin QTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Facebook / Twitter

Michael: I sold my first piece when I was twelve, and I’ve been at it since. I’ve always written short stories, articles, and poems for magazines with some success, especially in the past ten years. I’ve written many books, but I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS is my first to publish. I just felt like the time was right.

TRC: What or who influenced your foray into writing?

Michael: The list of books and authors is huge. My love of reading is kin to my love of writing. Sometimes I can’t tell where one begins and the other ends.

TRC: I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS is your November 2013 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Michael: Eighty-five year old, Christopher Goodman and eighty-four year old, Irene Kelly live thousand of miles from each other. Every night they met in a shared dream as young lovers. Chris decides they need to meet in the real world. He runs away from home. With the help of his traveling companion, his grandson Walter Jr., he journeys to Irene. His intentions – Marriage!

I'll See You in My DreamsTRC: Are any of the characters, including Christopher Goodman based in reality or a compilation of people and your imagination?

Michael: All my characters are a combination of real people, the same with all the incidents that happen. The more real you put in a story, the more real it feels.

TRC: What was your inspiration for the dream island and the whole ‘Death’ after them, the temple and underwater city etc?

Michael: I needed them to be alone, to relate and rely on each other – what better place than a desert island. As for Death, when Death comes, he doesn’t come to rob you of something or take someone you love away. He comes for everything and everyone. He’s the ultimate villain. Yet I didn’t portray him as evil; because I don’t think he is. He’s just doing his job. The temple denotes that there is something scared about True Love. It’s underwater because the sacred is not easily obtainable. It’s in an ancient city because True Love is sadly becoming rare and forgotten.

TRC: Did Gabriel have a special significance?

Michael: When you say the name Gabriel, most people think of an angel. He’s always in the background ready to step forward and help; he guards and guides. I like his aloofness and dry sense of humor.

TRC: Will Walter Jr. get his own story line?

Michael: At the end of the book it’s clear Walter Jr. is better for going on the journey. There’s a sweet hopeful magic about the ending. As any magician will tell you, when the audience looks too long and too hard the magic disappears.

TRC: How long did it take to complete this wonderful story?

Michael: I toss around an idea for one to two years. I write all the time in my head, even in my sleep. Once I sit down at the computer, it takes about a year to get it down. Then I let it sit for another year, and then I can look at it critically. That’s when I take another few months to rewrite. It’s a long process, but it works for me.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is this a stand alone story line?

Michael: I enjoy writing about the human condition, relationships, life. I’ll always write in that genre. So, in a way, though this will not be part of a series, I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS will not stand alone.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

Michael: Richard Farnsworth would have been perfect for the elderly Chris, but he’s not longer with us. There are plenty of good actors and actresses nowadays, but being an old geezer, I don’t know their names.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Michael: It’s a group effort, we all pull together. But I must admit they do get pushy at times.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Michael: Write in a way people can relate. Touch what’s in us all. We only connect with what is familiar to all of us. Don’t make it so personal. Drop the I, me, mine, and think more us.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Michael: I always have four to five projects going at the same time. If I go dry for awhile on one topic, I just switch to another, got to keep writing.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Michael: In my twenties I hitchhiked across the country for a few years. All the little road stories that happen in the book are variations of things I experienced in real life. I did plenty of research on Texas and American Indian history, and all the cities mentioned in the book.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Michael: My wife is a great help. She reads a lot, so if she doesn’t get it, it’s time to rewrite. As for stories, I won the 2013 Art Affair Literary Award for a story my wife felt was only so-so, and second place in the 2009 People’s Choice Awards with a story that didn’t even impress me. Just write for the joy of writing. No one truly knows.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Michael: I’m writing two new books, I’m rewriting two others; I’m working on a short story, and a couple of poems. (Honest, this is what I do)

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Michael: I’d like to thank my readers, encourage all the young writers out there, and I wish you peace and joy. But most of all I wish you love

Anne Rollins never thought she’d ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn’t end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

REVIEW: PLAY is the second instalment in Kylie Scott’s contemporary, adult, erotic Stage Dive series focusing on the members of the rock bank Stage Dive and the women they love. This is Stage Dive’s sexy and off the wall drummer Mal Ericson and twenty three year old book store clerk Anne Rollins’s story. Although we had not been previously introduced to Anne, she is Evelyn Ferris’s former neighbor-Ev married Stage Dive’s lead guitarist David Ferris in book one LICK.

Told from Anne’s first person point of view the storyline focuses on Mal and Anne’s very new relationship. Our couple meet at a party at David and Evelyn’s condo where Mal is immediately drawn to Anne. Mal is a man who possesses the smooth charm and even smoother tongue to make any woman swoon but it is hyper active/manic personality that draws people like a moth to a flame. A sexy drummer with a reputation for one night stands, Anne isn’t fooled by Mal’s charm-there is something sad hiding behind Mal’s comedic façade-a sadness that Anne recognizes only too well. Mal and Anne’s relationship is a very-quick friends to lovers storyline that is incredibly hot, intimate and intense.

Anne will remind many readers about themselves or someone that they know-she has been taken advantage of time and again-from her boss to her former roommate Anne’s life is currently defined by the number of times she has been screwed by the people that she trusts. In this, our couple’s story will begin when Mal makes her an offer that she could not refuse because Mal isn’t accepting anything less. Anne is about to lose her apartment and Mal offers himself up to be her new roommate.

The world building continues from the introductory storyline LICK where we were first introduced to the volatile and troubled members of Stage Dive. Most of the previous storyline characters play a secondary role including David’s brother Jimmy and guitarist Ben; Evelyn’s brother Nate; and her BFF Lauren. As the band members prepare for their upcoming tour, Mal’s world begins to fall apart and he takes his frustrations out on everyone around. The boys of Stage Dive are fallible, human and not without their own demons and manic histories. These are the stories of real people or your next door neighbors or even your family and friends.

Kyle Scott pulls the reader into a compelling and sometimes heartbreaking storyline that is driven by Mal’s sense of humor, sarcasm and playful attitude but the humor is hiding a pain that is changing his world one day at a time. He is a man in a world of hurt and refuses to let anyone in on the sorrow that is destroying his less than orderly world. Stage Dive is an addicting series that will captivate your imagination when you come center stage in the gritty and sometimes revealing world (behind the scenes) of rock and roll. PLAY is not as angst driven as LICK, but it is a storyline that will pull you in –none the less.

REVIEW

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Another brand new author discovered. A promising author that I believe will have many more stories ahead of her!

August Fog by A.L. Goulden can be classified as a new adult romance due to the angst driven story line, but also borderline erotica with some amazing sexual/sensual scenes. The story revolves around three individuals and straddles a fine line of morals and love. This story touched my heart, and made me shake my head at times as well. As I am an emotional reader I really appreciated the ups and downs that this story made me feel.

Monica Waters is living a fairly predictable life. She know what her days will be filled with. She is married to Alex, content in routine, bound to him through years of marriage, and a few hiccups along the way that many marriages go through. She loves Alex, he is her best friend. When Quinn moves in next door however, Monica is instantly smitten, drawn and ultimately connected with him. A friendship blooms through mutual passions and before they know it, a can of worms had been opened.

While infidelity is a serious topic in this book (I have a hard time with infidelity in book believe me) I have to say that there is so much here than blatant cheating. Monica loves her husband Alex, truely loves him, but she has met her soul mate in Quinn, and he reignites passions for life (not just sex) and begins to make her look deeply at the life she shares with Alex. Soon she is struggling! Alex hasn’t always been perfect either but two wrongs do not make a right!

Loved the emotional commitment of this book. I cried, I laughed a few times and I truely felt for all three characters. I loved that we were able to see into each of these lead characters minds, exposing us to all personal perspectives. It’s amazing how sympathetic and empathetic I felt towards them all! I will say this story was a slow start and I had trouble getting into it at first, but once it picked up, it took off! I also believe that this is the first of a trilogy, so no matter what happens at the end of this book, more will happen. Can I just say that I am totally okay with a menage relationship HEA A.L.!? WINK! LOL

HAPPY READING! 🙂

REVIEW: SURRENDER TO TEMPTATION is an adult, contemporary, erotic romance story (originally released in a six part serial format) from the pen of author Lauren Jameson that focuses on billionaire/Dom Zach St. Brenton and former paralegal Devon Reid. When Devon finds her boyfriend in bed with another woman, she packs up and moves across country only to find herself face to face with the man who would one day be her future and her heartbreak. The storyline is written from Devon’s first person POV

The storyline focuses on Devon as she moves forward with her life. Meeting Zach at a local restaurant, he will begin to pull Devon into a world she never knew-but a world of which will dominate her daily life. Zach is a Dom-a man who doesn’t do relationships because of his past-but a man who needs and wants control and, Devon is ripe for the picking. As the storyline builds, so too, does their relationship but Zach is a man who refuses to let his feelings take control. Most of the storyline focuses on the building relationship; Zach’s need for control; and Devon’s desire to be loved. Zach is a man whose emotions are buried deep and in this his character comes across cold and uncaring.

The relationship between Zach and Devon is complicated at best. He is her boss; the man to whom she must submit both in and outside of the bedroom. But their relationship is definitely not equal as Zach demands obedience and submission from Devon in everything. From work, to home, to the bedroom, Zach is a man in charge-until he loses his heart to a woman who only wants to be loved.

Devon is a heroine who is pulled into a lifestyle-not of her choosing-but a lifestyle Zach believes is for her. Although the Dom/sub relationships are usually equal in their pleasure/pain -give and take- I did not feel the connection between our leading couple. Devon is a reluctant submissive and Zach pushes Devon at every opportunity. In this, Zach is a man who needs to control and Devon is the woman he chooses to control. In my opinion, Devon had a need to feel wanted and Zach’s need to control gave Devon the illusion that Zach and the lifestyle-are for her. There were a few spots where the storyline becomes convoluted-the entire ‘surfing scenario’ felt disjointed from the story and was another demonstration about who is the dominant  in the relationship.

Lauren Jameson has written an interesting storyline that follows a similar outline to many of the best selling erotic/BDSM/Dom/sub series. Our hero believes his need for control is because of his past and our heroine is a naïve, young woman looking for love-in all the wrong men.

BURNING DESIRE Part I by Grace M. DeLeesie

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 2014

Seattle Detective Christopher Fury is about to have his life turned upside down. In a world where creatures known as Interdimensional Species, or IS, are discriminated against and treated like they are worth less than the dirt humans walk on, the half-fae detective must hide his bloodline so he can continue to have the resources of the Seattle police department available to him to hunt down his father’s murderer. But when Chris stumbles across his fire-pixie mate, how can he turn against his nature when she’s everything he’s ever searched for?

His world continues to spiral out of control when he learns that his fae father was the leader of a disbanded IS Rebellion. Now the IS want him to take his father’s place and lead them to freedom. As he gains friends and allies, Chris also makes enemies, and one so powerful he never saw them coming: the human government. He wants to keep his human mother and pixie mate safe, but he also can’t sit back and watch as his people continue to suffer. In a desperate move that changes the fate of not only his life, but also the IS Rebellion, Chris takes a stand—and fights back.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BURNING DESIRE is the first instalment in Grace M. DeLeesie’s contemporary, adult, paranormal storyline focusing on the upcoming war between the Interdimensional Species and humans. When their existence on Earth became known decades earlier, the IS as they have come to be known, were thrown into a world of discrimination, specieism, prejudism and inequality. Tagged, registered and controlled the IS have waited for their ‘savior’ and now have reason to hope that Chris Fury is the man to lead the rebellion-once again.

The storyline focuses on the developing relationship between police detective Chris Fury-half fae/half human-and fire pixie Vivian Fires. As destined mates, Chris and Vivian are quick to accept and acknowledge their connection; their destiny together and their need to consummate the union. There is none of the anxiety, angst or pushing away-this couple know there is only one mate for each and they are one of the lucky ones to have found theirs. The sexual chemistry literally burns with the pixie fire but their mating must be kept secret because Chris’s true identity has never been revealed.

The premise follows Chris as he and his fellow detectives must investigate the ritual slaying and murders of a triad of witches with connections to the highly addictive street drug ‘witches brew’. The investigation will throw Chris into a world of secrets, hidden deceptions and more trouble than he could possibly imagine. Chris is destined to lead the next uprising of the IS and his reluctance will be tested when he discovers the abuse and torture of so many supernatural beings. And leading the charge against the IS is one of their very own.

Grace M. DeLeesie introduces a number of Interdimensional species including shifters, witches, pixies, fae, warlocks, strange beings and so much more. The copious amount of information and interconnected stories fill the pages of BURNING DESIRE creating a network of potential storylines and future tales.

Told from Chris Fury’s first person point of view Burning Desire is a slow building storyline where the premise, at times, becomes lost in the background development and history of the characters and species. The male POV can be a trepidatious writing style; it is a difficult POV for some readers to accept and understand, but in this, Chris’s POV comes across as more female oriented than male.

The writing style is simple; the sex scenes are intimate without being overly gratuitous; the main characters are likeable-you can feel their heartbreaking sorrow for those who have suffered at the hands of the Department of the Interdimensional Species. With such flagrant disregard and disrespect for the IS, the humans have set the tone for a future of unrest and rebellion.

BURNING DESIRE is an interesting storyline where the IS hide in plain site; where secrets will be revealed; and where bloodlines will pit the humans against the Interdimensional species. Grace M.DeLeesie pulls the reader into a story of discrimination and inequality that is fueled by the hatred of one of their own.

I would suggest a new cover-something a little more professional looking.
