LEGAL AFFAIR: CONFESSIONS OF A LITIGATION GOD by Sawyer Bennett

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 31 2014

My name is Matt Connover. I am a Litigation God.
Other lawyers quake before me.
Women crawl on their knees just to spend the night in my bed and when I’m finished with them, I walk away without a backward glance.

I am well satisfied with my life and there isn’t a damn thing I’d change about it.

That is, until McKayla Dawson came along.

She was meant to be for one night only.
But she got under my skin, and now I want her back underneath my body.

It’s torture working with her in my law firm… day in and day out. But I have to think maybe the Fates have intervened to throw us together because she is unlike anyone I’ve ever known, and thus I need to pay careful attention to these Legal Affairs.

****
Confessions of a Litigation God is a stand alone, full length novel. It follows the affair of Matt Connover and McKayla Dawson as told in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance, Volumes 1-6. This book is told strictly from Matt’s point of view and has many additional scenes not included in the serial volumes.

REVIEW: LEGAL AFFAIRS: CONFESSIONS OF A LITIGATION GOD is the latest release from Sawyer Bennett and runs parallel to her successful LEGAL AFFAIRS series timeline. Told from Mark Connover’s POV, Confessions of a Litigation God pulls the reader into the mind and world of the billionaire power attorney who fell hard and fast for lawyer McKayla Dawson. As the hardened wall’s surrounding Mark’s heart begin to crumble we get an intimate look at the thoughts and ideas that drive Mark to do the things that he does.

Sawyer Bennett’s CONFESSIONS OF A LITIGATION GOD reveals the ego that is Mark Connover-a man sure of his looks, his power, his ability and his sexuality but a man who is also afraid to lose-in the courtroom –and his heart. Mark is a man who is as seductive as he is lethal; provocative as he is dangerous; captivating as he is addicting.

CONFESSIONS OF A LITIGATION GOD is an intense and emotional look at a relationship that started as an anonymous one night only but grew into a heartbreaking love story between two people-a love that is intense, erotic, staggering and traumatic, and yet unwelcome from the man whose sexual appetite is vast and varied.

Sawyer Bennett takes the reader on intimate journey through the mind of Mark Connover-a man who is afraid to trust and give his everything to any woman who has the power to destroy what is left of his heart.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 20, 2014

Kenza nightclub owner, Ruben McKenzie can have any woman he wants, but the only woman he wants is Rosie—his sweet innocent employee, who happens to be eleven years his junior. Watching her parade her hot little body around his club, serving drinks completely unaware of the attention she attracts is driving him to distraction. But when he sees a regular getting close to her, all bets are off.

Rosie has had more than enough life experience, but when it comes to matters of the heart—the one place that Ruben wants in—she’s completely innocent. Having no family of her own, it’s a dream to be invited to a McKenzie family gathering. Rosie always wanted to belong to a family like the McKenzie’s, but she’s afraid that if she gives her heart to Ruben and things don’t work she’ll be crushed, beyond repair.

Neither one of them may be able to keep their distance for long. The trouble that has been brewing at Kenza finally comes to a head, and when Rosie finds herself caught up in it, how far will Ruben go to protect her?

In this third installment of the McKenzie Brothers series you’ll learn more about the two remaining brothers, Lucien and Ramon. New players, Hunter and Julian, will be introduced.

None of my books have cliffhangers and they can be read as standalone, but to get the full background on the rest of the family then I do suggesting reading Seduce, The Wedding and Rapture first.

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DELIGHT is the third instalment in Lexi Buchanan’s contemporary, adult McKenzie Brothers erotic romance series focusing on the five McKenzie brothers and the women (and men) they love. This is Ruben McKenzie and Rosie’s storyline. Ruben is the owner of the Kenza nightclub where Rosie serves drinks and tends bar. Ruben has been attracted to Rosie since the day she was hired at the club but he has had a hands off policy when it comes to the staff-until the day Rosie lets him know exactly how she feels. This the third full length storyline in the series but it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty although it is better to read in order as many of the previous storyline characters-including the entire McKenzie clan-play minor roles throughout the story.

The focus of the storyline is the building relationship between Ruben and Rosie but also the strange happenings inside the Kenza nightclub. From fights, to break ins, to questionable individuals Ruben suspects that something is going down but finding proof is difficult when the staff are your number one suspects.

The relationship between Ruben and Rosie is hot, sensual, seductive and steamy. Ruben is a man who likes a little kink with his sex and Rosie is a woman who has a difficult time overcoming the memories of her past.

The secondary characters include all of the McKenzie brothers, Ruben’s parents and the introduction of Hunter and Julian-a former marine who aids in the stake out with Ruben’s staff. There is plenty of humor with the matriarch Pippa McKenzie when the family get together for Sunday dinners, and she is all up in the McKenzie’s boys’ business when it comes to love and relationship. This is a woman who desperately wants grandchildren and she knows a good thing when she sees Ruben and Rosie together.

DELIGHT is a sexually erotic storyline about two people who have wanted one another for a very long time but their age difference and experience has kept them apart. Lexi Buchanan pulls the reader into a story of family and friendship; love and understanding; and giving in to the desires that control your heart and your soul.

Excerpt

Turning, I start walking upstairs with an added sway to my hips. Halfway up, I nearly stumble when I feel his hands on my hips, and then I do stumble and end up on my hands and knees on the stairs when he bites me on the bottom.
I can’t think, his hands are everywhere; on my breasts, my belly, my hips, and my legs before he moves under my skirt and rubs me between my thighs. Moaning, I drop forward with Ruben following me.
“You’re so wet. Have you got any idea how hot it is, knowing I make you so wet? I need to taste you.”
Ruben wraps his arms around my waist and hauls me up a few more stairs to the landing. Turning me in his arms, he lays me down and stays kneeling on the stairs between my spread legs.
My skirt is around my hips as Rubens slides his hands up my thighs to my panties, which he rips from my body. Holding them to his nose, he closes his eyes and inhales before shoving them into his pocket.
He strokes between my nether lips, coating his fingers in my wetness—driving me crazy. Losing all inhibitions, I yank my shirt over my head, following it with my bra.
“Fuck, Rosie,” Ruben hisses staring at my breasts.
Wanting to tease him, I bring my hands up and play with my nipples as I hear Ruben cussing before he inserts a finger inside me. I arch up from the floor in pleasure, not wanting him to stop.
My hands drop from my breasts when I feel Ruben’s very talented mouth on me—his tongue lapping me up before darting in and out of my channel.
Threading my fingers into his hair, he holds my quivering thighs open while he goes to town on me. I’ve never come this way before, but I feel the ball of fire gathering in my belly—the tightening in my nipples…

PLAYING IT CLOSE
(London Legends #2)
by Kat Latham
Genre: contemporary, adult, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

Playing it CloseABOUT THE BOOK: January 14, 2014

Where do you go to escape everything when you’re one of the most famous rugby players in the world? For Liam Callaghan, that place is a remote lodge on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast. Perfect, except he doesn’t exactly want to be alone with his thoughts. Enter Tess Chambers, the ultimate distraction.

Still reeling from a professional disaster that’s made her all but unemployable, Tess understands the desire to move through life as somebody else. So when instantly recognizable Liam uses a fake name, she runs with it and creates a temporary new identity of her own.

Their time spent together in paradise is idyllic but brief—after one passionate night, Liam wakes up to find Tess gone. Returning to London, he’s shocked to learn she’s taken a job with his team’s new sponsor. As the Legends’ captain, he’ll have to not only figure out how to work with the one woman who ever left him wanting more, but also convince her that their feelings in the present mean more than any lies they’ve told in the past

••••••••••••

REVIEW: PLAYING IT CLOSE is the second instalment in Kat Latham’s contemporary, adult London Legends romance series focusing on the London Legends Rugby Team. This is team captain Liam Callaghan and Tess Chambers’s storyline. The timeline runs parallel to the first instalment Knowing the Score but very little of the premise overlaps.

Liam and Tess will meet while on vacation in Venezuela but Tess’s abrupt departure following a wild night of anonymous sex will leave Liam struggling with what has happened. Upon returning to England, Liam will discover that the company looking to back the London Legends rugby team is headed by Tess’s cousin and Tess will become part of the team’s PR. What follows is a series of misunderstandings and broken hearts when Liam believes that Tess had set him up all along. But Tess has had to endure months of humiliation following a disastrous revelation at work, and her connections with Liam will have to be kept under the radar.

The relationship between Liam and Tess begins as strangers in paradise but quickly moves to bitter exes following their reconnection. There is a definite attraction, one fueled by lust, sex and desire but betrayal and dissolution are first and foremost on Liam’s mind. The sexual tension is palpable and you know that there is only one woman on Liam’s mind. To get the girl back, Liam will learn that there is more to Tess than he could have possibly known. Tess has some major self esteem issues that drive part of her personality and her emotional fragility. Years of humiliation and a need to protect the man that she loves have led to a public breakdown that will push Liam away for the last time.

The secondary characters are colorful, believable and lend a little comic relief when necessary. The world building continues with the inclusion of the London Legends players as they strive to lead England to the World Rugby Championships.

PLAYING IT CLOSE is an engaging storyline about two people with issues of trust. Kat Latham pulls the reader into a provocative tale of seduction; an intense story about family and friends; and the drama of living your life in the public eye. It is a passionate story, sprinkled with a little humor and some heartbreaking discoveries, but in the end, another London Legends rugby player will find love and his happily ever after.

KNOWING THE SCORE
(London Legends #1)
by Kat Latham
Genre: contemporary, adult, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

Knowing the ScoreAbout the book: Release Date August 2013

Rugby player Spencer Bailey is determined to win a spot on England’s World Cup team. But with a month break before the selectors start watching him, he’s eager to have fun with a woman who knows the score: the relationship will end when rugby season begins. The lovely American Caitlyn Sweeney seems perfect for the role of temporary lover, since her visa will run out soon anyway.

Caitlyn works for an international disaster relief organization and can handle the world’s worst crises, but she flinches from her own. Her past has left her with a fear of intimacy so deep that she has trouble getting close to anyone—until she meets sexy Spencer. His hot body and easygoing nature are too much for even her to resist.

Neither Caitlyn nor Spencer expects to fall hard for each other. But with their relationship deadline approaching, the old rules of the game seem less important than before…until past secrets surface, challenging everything they thought they knew about each other.

REVIEW: KNOWING THE SCORE is the first instalment in Kat Latham’s adult, contemporary London Legends romance series. This is rugby player Spencer Bailey and Caitlyn Sweeney’s storyline. When Caitlyn saves an elderly gentleman who has suffered a heart attack in the London subway, she will eventually meet the most beautiful man she has ever seen. What Caitlyn doesn’t know is that the gentleman’s grandson is Spencer Bailey -one of the star players on London’s world class rugby team and the man who would steal her heart.

The focus of the story is Caitlyn and Spencer’s building relationship but a relationship that has only two to three months until it ends. Caitlyn is an American who is currently working in London with a disaster relief organization and her visa is about to expire but Caitlyn is a woman who has some major issues with intimacy and sex. Spencer promises to take things slow but in the end, Caitlyn is a woman who isn’t sure exactly what it is she wants.

KNOWING THE SCORE is a storyline about a woman so traumatized by her past that she is afraid to let anyone into her heart, her mind or her body. In fact, she is so afraid of physical intimacy that she recoils at the mere touch of a hand. In this, much of the storyline finds Spencer trying to engage Caitlyn in the physical act of touching and Caitlyn struggling to let go of the past.

The characters were interesting in that they both had issues that needed to be addressed but Caitlyn’s fears, although not necessarily unfounded, were a bit of a distraction throughout most of the story. She was a woman who ran from the things in her private life yet she went head first into a war torn area of Afghanistan where all women are at risk. In this, her character development was controversial and contradictory at times.

The storyline, as well as the relationship, were slow to build. When faced with her own choices Caitlyn never considered how it would affect Spencer and in this she was a difficult character to like. Spencer, as the hero, was not an innocent but he was far from an alpha male-he had patience beyond what should be expected; a loving relationship with his grandfather; and a dark mark in his past that once revealed will send Caitlyn running-once again. The misunderstandings could have been easily solved but Caitlyn did what she did best-she ran.

Written in third person POV, the writing style is simple. The premise takes the reader from London to Australia and Afghanistan. The storyline and premise were interesting but got lost in the heroine’s issues and need to run. There were several high and low points and, a happily ever after but at times I wondered if everything was going to work out-in the end.

Psi Another Day by D.R. Rosensteel – a Review

Psi Another Day 1

Amazon / Barnes & Noble/ Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
THERE’S A NEW SUPERHERO IN TOWN.

By day, I’m just another high school girl who likes lip gloss. But by night I’m a Psi Fighter—a secret guardian with a decade of training in the Mental Arts. And I’m about to test those skills in my first battle against evil.

BAD GUYS BEWARE.

When I was six, the Walpurgis Knights, our deadliest enemy, murdered my parents. The Psi Fighters put me into hiding, and all traces of my existence evaporated. Then I went through the most accelerated Psi Fighter training possible. And now I go to your school.

’CAUSE I WILL TAKE YOU OUT.

Unfortunately, so do the bad guys. My parents’ killer has sent his apprentice to infiltrate the school to find me. And everyone is a potential suspect, even irresistible new kid, Egon, and my old nemesis-turned-nice-guy, Mason. Fingers crossed I find the Knight before he finds me…

Review:

Psi Another Day is the first book in the Psi Fighter Academy by D. R. Rosensteel.

Lynn “Rinnie” Noelle seems like your normal every day 16 year old teenage girl – going to high school, being bullied, taunted, and all around social misfit.  But in reality she is not. She has a secret identity.  She is a Psi Fighter and has been training for ten years in the Mental Arts.

Her best friend is Kathryn Hollisburg and she knows Rinnie’s secret identity and is there to help her along the way as any best friend does.  Rinnie’s life has been spent preparing for the fight against her enemy the Walburgi Knights. They kidnapped her when she was young and killed both of her parents. And now they seem to be back!  But she has been assigned to find out who at the high school is pushing the drug Psychedone 10 – a twisted mutation of LSD, and who is responsible for the kidnappings in town. And is there a connection between the two?

I loved the character of Rinnie. She has a sassy, snarky attitude and her interactions with her mentor Andor were some of my absolute favorites.  Some of the characters names reminded me of wonderful, whimsical fairytale book characters and the story left me feeling like this could possibly be a wonderful teen series.

The Mental abilities Rinnie possessed and training to learn were creatively named and I enjoyed finding out what each entailed.  This book left me laughing out loud and turning pages to find out who the bad guys were! Well played on the ending!  Left me wanting more!

Yet no one can outrun their past…

Especially one filled with bitter memories, which refuse to remain hidden

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL is the first instalment in Monica James’s contemporary, new adult series of the same name. The focus of the series is on nineteen year old Mia Lee (aka Paige Cassidy) and the horror that has been her life.

Told from first person (Mia/Paige) POV, the storyline premise follows Paige as she runs from her past. Landing in South Boston, Virginia with only a few dollars and a backpack with little more, Paige will discover that sometimes family has nothing to do with the blood in your veins but the people you meet along the way.Much of the back story is told through flashbacks and nightmares.

Monica James pulls the reader into an emotional storyline where a young woman had to make a choice –a choice that haunts her sleep but a choice that had to be made. Meeting Quinn and Tristan Berkeley, Hank the motel operator and Tabitha (her new BFF), Paige learns what it means to be family-a family of misfits who are there when the world begins to spiral out of control.

There is a slight love triangle formula developing between Paige and the Berkeley brothers which amped up my anxiety with an already emotional and heartbreaking storyline. Tristan and Quinn’s family history is just a step up from Mia’s horrific past and Paige (Mia) will find a kindred soul mate in Quinn.

The secondary characters (Tabitha, Quinn, Tristan, Hank) play a major role throughout the story and become one another’s sole source of comfort and support. The world building brings the abhorrent face of abuse, betrayal, neglect and addiction –front and center-in a storyline that will tug at your heart and your soul.

Monica James writes a seductive story about one woman finding solace and support from the unlikeliest of people and places. SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL is a provocative, emotional, intense and passionate storyline; the back story is gritty, abrasive and startling; and the present is traumatic and profound. You will not walk away untouched.

Interview beige

TRC: Hi Monica and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL and the success of your I, Surrender series.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Monica James: Goodreads Twitter / Facebook

Monica JamesMonica: Well, I am a humbled girl from Australia, who is incredibly grateful to be doing an interview with someone halfway across the world. I studied Philosophy and Literature at University and I loved it. I loved reading the philosophies of Aristotle, Plato and Nietzsche because their writings are simply beautiful. So I guess in a way, these philosophers inspired me to follow my dream, and take a chance to start writing seriously.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Monica: Life inspired, and still inspires me to write. I never really had a moment where I was like, ‘Yes, I want to be a writer.’ I just loved being able to express myself onto paper, as writing came so naturally to me. It started out jotting down simple phrases, quotes, thoughts, and then it extended into poems and short stories. Then it just exploded and went from there. I love being able to tell a story, and share my vision with everyone who reads my work.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Monica: I love hanging out with my pets. And of course, reading.

Something LIke NormalTRC: SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL is the first release in your latest contemporary, new adult series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Monica: Something like Normal is a manuscript I hold very close to my heart. This book was a very challenging, taxing project to write, but I loved every minute of it. I wanted to write a different story, and challenge myself as a writer, and also, challenge my readers. Some readers may find the context a little dark, but that’s what I love about this series. Every chapter challenges me, and also pushes me to write outside my comfort zone, which I love. The premise is simple: my characters just want to find their piece of normalcy in a not so normal world.

TRC: Are any of the characters or the premise based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

Monica: Honestly, I had to do a lot of research for this book. I wanted it to be as accurate as possible, and also, I wanted it to be confronting. It is mainly fiction; however, the characters are loosely based on people I know.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Monica: There are 4 books in this series, and they all follow the same characters throughout each book. These characters have a lot of secrets, and I really wanted to ensure I didn’t rush anyone’s past, especially Mia’s and Quinn’s.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Monica: Heaps. This story involves certain situations and topics which I have never personally encountered before. I wanted to make the story as real, and as raw as possible. Everything that you read was researched, and double checked, to ensure that what you are reading is factual.

TRC: SURRENDERED-the final book in your I Surrender trilogy will be released in July 2014. Will you give us any hints or clues about the premise?

Monica: It was actually very sad writing, Surrendered. I have become very attached to these characters, and wrapping up their stories was hard. I did cry a few times LOL Hints- hmm, let’s just say Jasper White is gonna make you swoon!

TRC: Have you considered a spinoff or novella series when the trilogy is complete?

Monica: Yes, I have. If the fans want it, then I’ll see what I can do 😉

I Surrender seriesTRC: We have read where you have re-written the first two books –I Surrender and Surrender to Me-in your I Surrender series. Has the premise changed from the original storylines such that reading the new release will be confusing to previous readers?

Click HERE for our reviews of I, Surrender and Surrender to Me.

Monica: Not at all. When I say they are rewritten, this means the flow of the storyline has been rewritten. The actual plot itself has remained the same. A few scenes have been added, so think of these as bonus scenes.

TRC: What are your thoughts on writing a series and ending an instalment with a major cliff hanger?

Monica: LOL I know many readers hate them, but I feel they are needed to keep the readers coming back for more. Personally, as a reader, the more powerful and devastating an ending, the more chance I have at remembering the story. I love eagerly awaiting the next book in a series I love, because it’s like Christmas morning when I get my hands on it!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Monica: If only I had a say! It’s 100% the characters. I cannot tell you how many times I have sat down in front of my laptop with a clear vision in my head, and then by the end of it, it reads like a totally different story. Some characters are louder and more obnoxious than others LOL, but I do try and stay true to them, and even though their decisions are sometimes questioned by readers, there is a reason why they are doing it.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Monica: This is a really good question. There is only one rule I religiously follow when writing, and that is, write what you know. Your readers are intelligent, and they will know if you’re trying to write about something you’re not comfortable with. I am not talking about subject matter, because like I mentioned, Something like Normal was a project out of my comfort zone. I’m referring to writing style, words, flow etc…

An honest, raw piece of literature which showcases your talent, I believe, is what makes a successful story. If you want to write about something totally foreign to you, just make sure you have done your homework.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Monica: I usually take a breather for a few days. I watch movies, read, and listen to music, that kind of thing. The more pressure put on oneself, I believe, the worse it gets. Writing should be expressive, not structured and controlled.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Monica: I am a very private writer, and I actually only use one other person to bounce my ideas off, and that is my friend, and fellow author, Lisa Edward.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Monica: Well, I am honoured to be an Amazon bestselling author, so I guess the next step would be reaching for the stars.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Monica: I am terrified of Air Blown Inflatable Characters

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Monica: Book 2 of the Something like Normal series, and a standalone.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Monica: I wanted to give a shout out to my ever supportive, forever loyal readers- You guys mean everything to me. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am now. It’s because of your enthusiasm and loyalty that I am able to do what I love, and for that, I will forever be grateful to each and every one of you. And the only way I can repay you, is to continue writing stories I hope you will love.

Thanks for this. It was fun x

Description:
Lana Patterson wants a husband, but she’s striking out online and with blind dates. Her sister suggests she look to her past to find her future, and Lana starts contacting old boyfriends. She’s been practically housebound since her husband died, so she starts local, in Washington DC.

Captain CPR is Chippendale firefighter hot, but other than his incredible body and compatible sense of humor, Lana doesn’t find him the ideal bedmate or potential husband. Pierce Abrams runs into burning buildings for a living, and she wants a husband who will be there to walk her daughter down the aisle.

Lana grew up as a Foreign Service child and is now a travel writer. Her sister and daughter insist she hit the road, so Argentina and England are her next stops. The first boy she ever kissed is athletic, adventurous, intelligent, wealthy, and the most amazing Latin lover. Unfortunately, Sergio Salazar has a closet full of girlfriends that he claims he’s willing to give up. Lana has her doubts.

Her high school boyfriend has more potential, since his current girlfriend is on the wane. Duncan Claymore is a baron with a castle, and oh so tempting, even introducing Lana and family to the Duchess of Cambridge. It would be a fantasy life, but his conniving sister threatens to derail their renewed love affair.

Three amazing men are all having adventures of their own. Which one will capture Lana’s heart? The reader gets to choose!

Review:

If you love fantasy romance, adventure larger than life, excitement beyond the normal this book is a must read. Marilyn Kelly has written a wonderful tale of a mid-aged widow with a teenage daughter who has just gotten over the worst of her grief and is on a quest to fulfill a promise to her now deceased husband; finding another husband for her and father for their daughter.

It’s well written, intriguing and humorous all at the same time. Told from Lana’s point of view, it’s interesting and incredibly emotional. The stories are larger than life, leading to wonderful entertainment and fantasy. The love making scenes range from comical to OMG!

Go ahead, give yourself a wonderful adventure, and I do mean adventure! Exotic locations, swoon-worthy lovers, heroic situations, what’s not to love? Very entertaining and so worth the time to read.

The story progresses to almost the end, then you get to choose your ending (not a favorite style for me) if you like the style. I had to read all three endings I just couldn’t stand not to! LOL Personally, I like to have the complete story from the author’s choice, but I found this this was interesting. There is also a bonus of the men’s POV’s at the end, equally entertaining.

My advice, grab your favorite beverage, some snacks and settle in for an interesting ride and read! Enjoy everyone, I certainly did!

Why I Love Romance Reader Conferences

I love reader conventions because I am an extroverted author who loves the romance genre, and sharing that joy in a welcoming, validating atmosphere is empowering. Before I started writing novels, I was a voracious reader of historical romance (now I mostly read books on writing and promotion.) I thought authors were born knowing how to write, and they stayed at their desks like automatons cranking out great prose. I had no idea they gathered together to discuss their craft and socialize. If I had known there were conferences where romance readers and authors mingled, I might never have started writing, because I would have come home with a hundred free books (not exaggerating) and a dozen new authors on my must-read list.

Fortunately, I didn’t discover reader conferences until after I’d written my first manuscript and was dedicated to being published. I’d already attended RWA (where the romance readers are also writers), so I’d gotten over the awesome feeling of meeting my favorite authors and learning some of their writing secrets. But my first Romantic Times Booklovers Convention (2008), where readers and writers socialize, was revelatory. Many authors and readers are FUN!

Heather Graham and her talented family sang and acted out a mystery, and she provided dinner and dancing to boot. Anne Elizabeth dressed in a corset and historical costume and displayed her ample cleavage like a romance heroine. Jade Lee threw a reader party and entertained with her witty humor. Delilah Marvelle, Sharon Page, and others danced until the DJ stopped playing. Amazing workshops for reviewers, bloggers and readers, handsome cover models who entertain, and tons of freebies. The list goes on. This doesn’t happen at writer-only conferences, where authors are focused on learning craft, business, and selling books to agents and editors.

And readers are integral to the fun. Writing is a solitary activity, and it’s beyond thrilling to meet readers who have enjoyed our stories. Reading is just as isolating, so stepping outside the comfort zone to get out and meet favorite authors is a worthy adventure. Even pre-published authors are lauded (good to have a website or Facebook page to keep future fans updated.)

My goal as an author is to make women feel empowered and fulfilled (and for men to learn how to accomplish their part of the process.) I can’t do that without readers.

I’m currently at the 2014 RT Booklovers Convention in New Orleans, and this is my first year with books to promote, which makes the week doubly exciting. Even though this convention is my favorite time of the year, the preparation and event are exhausting. There are giveaways to design and implement, promotional materials to write, and the packing alone takes me days. I write super sexy historical romances for Ellora’s Cave and have a closet of costumes from my connection to Renaissance festivals (my daughter-in-law grew up a ‘Rennie’ and her artisan parents are dear friends), so now I also wear a flowing gown with corset some days of the convention.

I also have a contemporary romantic women’s fiction, All the Boys I Ever Kissed, that I am publishing independently, and there is no better place to promote a book than where the readers gather to celebrate the romance genre. Who else is more likely to retweet my promotional posts and tell their friends about my unusual concept? (All the Boys is a choose your own ending novel, with three hot guys to pick from.)

So, I love reader conferences because I feel my work is valued here, and I hope to see more of you at next year’s RT, or Romanticon, or whatever reader-writer gathering is most accessible to you. Google romance reader conventions and you’ll likely find one near you. Anyone want to share their experience at a reader conference? Do you love them, dislike them or never been to one?

Happy reading!

About The Author beige
???????

I write super-strong women, which is no surprise. Growing up with five brothers, my theme song was Anything They Can Do, I Can Do Better! I’ve traveled the world, visited over forty countries and lived in three, earned a Master’s in Microbiology, obtained a patent, and trained thousands of emergency responders internationally. My creative side constantly knocked, and I beaded, faux painted and entertained as a wedding DJ on weekends. A few years ago, I started writing sexy historical romances and my college sweetheart husband jumped in, helping me with research and grinning all the way.

My Wanton Widows series, published by Ellora’s Cave, is about three accomplished women in Victorian England who are all searching for love, respect, and passion. The first in the series is Sounds of Love about a matchmaking novelist, a scholarly widow and an arrogant earl.

All the Boys I Ever Kissed (A Choose Your Ending Novel) is my first contemporary romantic women’s fiction. If you like The Bachelorette or Mamma Mia, I hope you’ll love this book! There are three amazing men – a DC firefighter/paramedic, an athletic Latin millionaire, and a British baron. Which one will win Lana’s heart? You choose your favorite! I follow the steamy romance with The Men Tell All Q&A.

I love lists and I’m the creator of the Eleven Senses – Who Knew? word-list book available on Amazon. If you’re looking for a way to add more sensory details to your writing, or to understand how the reading mind works, this book will come in handy.

Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter – a Review

Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter – a Review

Killing Secrets

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

Description:
Rachel James’ ex-husband is released from prison determined to reclaim her and her little girl — his key to the James fortune. Frightened, Rachel flees to Denver with the child who hasn’t uttered a word since her daddy went to prison.

Contractor Patrick Thorne wants nothing to do with another of his parents’ charity cases. He failed his own wife so abysmally she took her own life as well as his unborn son’s. After two years, it’s time to concentrate on the bid he’s won and the saboteur trying to destroy his construction firm.

There is no room for trust in either of their hearts. But trust is all that will untangle the secrets that dominate their lives, free a little girl of her silent prison, and save them all from a serial killer who stands too close

Review:
Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter is the 1st book in her new series, Thorn’s Thorne. Killing Secrets is a mystery suspense romantic thriller from beginning to end.  Rachel James is our heroine, and she has been hiding from an abusive ex-husband, who has recently been released from jail. Now Rachel is on the run, taking her young daughter to Denver to be under the protection of the Thorne family. Rachel knows she cannot stay too long in one place, as her ex always finds them, and when he does he will either kill her or kidnap her daughter. Young Amanda has not spoken a word since her father was put in jail for badly beating up his wife, as well as a friend of hers.

Patrick Thorne is our hero, who himself has a number of issues, becomes Rachel’s protector.  In between keeping his promise to keep an eye on Rachel and her daughter, Amanda; Patrick is trying to work with his brother Jack to find out who is sabotaging his business.  There is a killer on the loose, called the Angel Killer, who seems to be targeting Patrick.

Both Rachel and Patrick immediately find themselves attracted to each other.  But both do not want anything romantic to develop.  Rachel has no intention of staying in Denver for long, and does not want to endanger those who help her from her psychotic ex-husband.   Patrick has still not gotten over the tragedy of his wife killing herself, and somehow feels responsible.

What follows is an exciting, tense story where Rachel’s life is in danger quite often, as Greg the ex-husband finds her. The Angel Killer is also close by, and no one knows who or why.  In the middle of these scary scenes of danger, Rachel and Patrick can no longer deny their feelings for each other, and their relationship becomes one that will have you rooting for them.  There is great chemistry between them, and it sizzles; but death, destruction and betrayal threatens to destroy them, with so many twists and turns along the way.

I do not want to give spoilers, other than to say this was a thrill a minute, with a lot of action, and excitement. Will Rachel be able to stop Greg, her ex?  Who is the Angel Killer and why is he targeting Patrick?  Will young Amanda ever talk again?  Will Rachel & Patrick be able to survive and stay together?  You will have to read this book to find out.  K.L Docter has written a fabulous story in Killing Secrets that has everything: nonstop action, suspense, excitement, great characters, and a wonderful hot couple.
