Vampires exist. So do werewolves. The creatures that you fear in the darkness? They’re all real. And the baddest of the paranormals…those who love to hurt humans…they’re sent to Purgatory, the only paranormal prison in the U.S.

His job is to stop the monsters.

Deadly forces are at work within Purgatory. The monsters are joining together—and their plans have to be stopped. FBI Agent Shane August, a very powerful vampire with a dark past, is sent into the prison on an undercover assignment. His job is to infiltrate the vampire clan, by any means necessary.

She wants to help the prisoners.

Dr. Olivia Maddox wants to find out just why certain paranormals go bad. What pushes some vampires over the edge? Why do some werewolves turn so savage? If she can understand the monsters, then Olivia thinks she can help them. When she gets permission to enter Purgatory, Olivia believes she is being given the research opportunity of a lifetime.

Olivia doesn’t realize that she’s walking straight into hell.

To survive, they have to rely on each other.

When the prisoners break loose, there is only one person—one vampire—who can protect her, but as Olivia and Shane fight the enemies that surround them, a dark and dangerous passion stirs to life between the doctor and the vamp. Shane realizes that Olivia is a woman carrying secrets—powerful, sinful secrets. Secrets that a man would kill to possess.

And Olivia realizes that—sometimes—you can’t control the beast inside of you. No matter how hard you try. Some passions can push you to the very limits of your control…and the growing lust that she feels for her vampire…it’s sending her racing right into a deadly storm of desire.

Welcome to Purgatory…a place that’s a real hell on earth…

REVIEW:

MARKED BY THE VAMPIRE is the second instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult Purgatory paranormal series. Purgatory is an island prison for the supernatural-those that cannot be controlled. This is Dr. Olivia Maddox and FBI Agent Shane August’s storyline. Although this is the second in the series, MARKED BY THE VAMPIRE can be read as a stand alone. Some of the previous storyline characters play secondary roles and any information from the prior story is imparted where necessary.

Told from third person POV the story follows Olivia Maddox as she has gained access to Purgatory to further her research surrounding the darkest of the supernatural powers. But Olivia has a secret-one that if discovered or released-will place everyone in danger. So to add to her protection, vampire and Para Unit specialist Shane August is sent in undercover only to realize a little too late that they have both ‘literally’ been thrown to the wolves. Someone knows about Olivia’s true identity and is hoping that Purgatory will keep her under control.

The attraction between Shane and Olivia is immediate. They have a connection that can only be called fated and in this Shane is determined to protect Olivia at all costs-even if it means taking out everyone who threatens the woman he believes to be his mate.

The secondary characters include many of the previous storyline characters as well as a new cast of villains who are on the hunt for the ultimate in supernatural powers. The storyline is well paced; the suspense and mystery will keep the reader on the edge of their seat-and in the end-there was very little difference between good and evil. Trust must be earned and very little is earned throughout the story. Needless to say, Olivia had some major issues of trust, especially when she found herself imprisoned by the very people who had promised to keep her safe.

Cynthia Eden writes an exciting and intense story with all the hallmarks of a paranormal mystery-the reader is never sure just who is the bad guy; who is the betrayer; and who can be trusted with your life. Life in Purgatory is hell, but working with the Para Unit is like working for the Devil-himself.

“I’ve got a plan, love. Trust me.” He advanced into the darkness.
Her nails sank into his skin. “No. Look, dammit, I get that it’s too little, too late, but I wasn’t exactly high on choices upstairs.”
He frowned down at her. She wasn’t looking at his face in that total darkness, but instead staring just over his shoulder.
“Give me something here—I mean, make me know that I’m with the good guy.”
Oh, but he couldn’t do that. He’d never been exactly good, not even when he’d been working with the FBI. If she only knew the things he’d done, she might just run back up to the wolves. “I work with Pate.”
“Give me more. Why are you at Purgatory? What’s going on?”
He pulled her closer. Wanted to take her mouth again but didn’t. Control. “We don’t have time for a fucking long discourse here, love. So here are the simple facts. I’m working undercover—a cover that I blew for you. And right now, I’m the only thing standing between you and death, so if you want to die, then by all means…” He let her go. “Don’t trust me.”
In the darkness, he saw her wrap her arms around her stomach. “You…you haven’t killed? Your file was all lies?”
“I’ve killed plenty.” Brutal truth. “And that’s why I’m your best hope of survival.”
She rocked back on her heels. “Have you killed innocents?”
The woman was so naive. “There are no innocents in this world.”
Her body trembled. He could see the small ripple that shook her.
With his back teeth clenched, he demanded, “Now are you coming with me or do you want to try your luck with the wolves?”
Her hand lifted, tried to find him in the dark. He stepped toward her so that she touched his chest.

FBI Special Agent Duncan McGuire spends his days–and his nights–tracking real-life monsters. Most humans aren’t aware of the vampires and werewolves that walk among them. They don’t realize the danger that they face, but Duncan knows about the horror that waits in the darkness. He hunts the monsters, and he protects the innocent. Duncan just never expects to become a monster. But after a brutal werewolf attack, Duncan begins to change…and soon he will be one of the very beasts that he has hunted.

Dr. Holly Young is supposed to help Duncan during his transition. It’s her job to keep him sane so that Duncan can continue working with the FBI’s Para Unit. But as Duncan’s beast grows stronger, the passion that she and Duncan have held carefully in check pushes to the surface. The desire that is raging between them could be a very dangerous thing…because Holly isn’t exactly human, not any longer.

As the monsters circle in, determined to take out all of the agents working at the Para Unit, Holly and Duncan will have to use their own supernatural strengths in order to survive. But as they give up more of their humanity and embrace the beasts within them both, they realize that the passion between them isn’t safe, it isn’t controllable, and their dark need may just be an obsession that could destroy them both.

Wolver's Gold

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / Smashwords

About The Book: Release Date May 20, 2014

Finding gold where you least expect it…

Lone wolf and Special Investigator for the ubiquitous Eugene Begley, Challenger McCall is sent to the town of Gold Gulch to take care of a problem that might involve the exposure of the wolver community. For McCall, it’s like stepping back in time – a hundred and fifty years back in time.

Gold Gulch is a tourist attraction where the wolvers take their work so seriously, they continue their Victorian lives long after the tourists have gone home. Much like their 19th century counterparts, the women are overworked and underpaid.

Rachel Kincaid is one such woman. Exercising the only power she holds, she has become a wolver oddity; a spinster who refuses to mate. Why would she, when she already has to take care of the short-staffed hotel, its restaurant, and her ne’er-do-well father? Angry and bitter, Rachel decides she deserves a better hand than the one she’s been dealt and finds herself drawn to the handsome new sheriff, Challenger McCall. Why shouldn’t she, for once in her life, enjoy the same freedom as the Soiled Doves on the hill?

Things get complicated when Rachel’s wolf awakens after a long sleep and the town’s women seem to awaken along with it. Papa’s gambling debts leave them on the brink; the pack is at risk; and the women rebel. Oh, and don’t forget the murders. If ever a pack needed rescuing, Gold Gulch is it, but as the girls up at Daisy’s Bouquet point out, – A smart woman needs to look after herself!

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW:  Wolver’s Gold is the newest intriguing installment of the Amazon Best Selling Wolver series by author Jacqueline Rhoades.

Departing from the last three Wolver books which involved the three Goodman brothers and their lives and packs, Wolver’s Gold leads deeper into the heart of the Wolver society and its issues. We get a closer look at the elusive Mr. Begley.

Challenger McCall works for Mr. Begley as a fixer for the elusive Council of Wolvers. He investigates and corrects issues within packs that may lead to the exposure of Wolver society to the human race. He’s unique, an alpha loner with no lasting relationships, except with his boss.

Rachel Kincaid is a wolver woman living in Gold Gulch, a tourist old west town where the Victorian dress and manner is still alive and well, even after hours. She’s decided against mating and for 15 years her wolf has slept.

Gold Gulch has some issues and Mr. Begley sends Challenger McCall to find out what’s up in the little old west town.
That’s the set up! No spoilers but let me tell you what you’ll find!

A twisty tale of crimes, passion, and women who need to find a way back to the freedom they were born to have and hold. Ms. Rhoades has written a wonderful tale of so many complicated issues and used her typical humor, wit and interesting twists to bring them to life and light.

Again, this book is full of wonderful and witty conversations, situations and secondary characters that you just learn to love (and bad guys you love to hate). All this and marvelously researched language and period items without getting in the way of a great storyline.

Do yourself a huge favor, get your favorite beverage, a few tissues and make sure you have lots of time, you won’t want to stop or put this down; and enjoy this action packed, love story (yes, it’s got some sizzling love scenes)! I certainly did!

excerpt

She’d just bent to sweep her neat little pile of debris into the pan when he spoke above her.
“What’s freckled and pink and red all over,” (Jack Coogan) asked with a snickering laugh and then sang his detestable ditty. “Tell me Rachel dearest, if what they say is true, are you like the other redheads and red all over, too?”
Anger rose in Rachel so quickly and violently that it should have frightened her. Her spine snapped to attention, shoulders back and squared. Gripping her broom with two hands, she spun it upright like a soldier presenting arms and then she swung that broom like she knew what she was doing and had done it before. She thrashed that obnoxious wolver, who was now hunched over with his arms curled around his head to protect himself from the blows of the tightly woven fan of straw.
“Do you really want to know the answer?” she hissed at him, continuing the broomstick battering. Whomp. “Because I’ll gladly tell you, Mr. Coogan.” Whomp. “Your whole body, that’s what.” Whomp. “Or it will be by the time I’m finished with you! Now get out of here before I really lose my temper.” Breathless, she gave him yet another swat. “And don’t come back!”
“Aw, Rache, I was just trying to get your attention,” Coogan complained as he scuttled around the edge of the large vestibule, Rachel right behind him threatening another bout of violence. “It was just a bit of fun.”
“It’s Miss Kincaid, and the next time you think that’s the way to get a lady’s attention, you’d better think twice. Do you hear me, Mr. Coogan? I have neither time nor tolerance for your fun. Now get out and do not dare to enter this establishment ever again.”
She drove him through the open door with the threat of her broom. Someone stepped aside when, with one last stroke of the broom, and as if she was sweeping the last of the dirt out the door, Rachel chased the man out.
A large, booted foot connected with the seat of Jack Coogan’s trousers with enough force to send him sprawling over the porch and down into the dirt.
“Always happy to help a beautiful woman,” said a deep voice.
Cheeks flushed from the heat of battle, green eyes blazing with a hundred grievances ready to explode, and trusty broom at the ready, Rachel turned to the owner of the boot.
“Whoa, little lady, whoa.” He waved his hands in front of him to ward off the imminent attack. “I’m on your side,” he laughed. “No guy in his right mind would say that to a lady.” He laughed again. “I would have helped you more, but you looked like you were doing fine without me.”
Rachel felt her mouth open, yet no sound emerged. With a conscious effort, she forced it shut, but could do nothing about her wide and staring eyes. To calm herself, she drew in a breath deep enough to make her corset creak, and caught the heady scent of a prime alpha wolver.
“Are you okay?”
No, of course she wasn’t ‘okay’. How could she be? She’d just lost her temper in the most unladylike manner in front of this, this…
“Oh dear,” she breathed and looked at the broom in her hands as if she’d never seen one before. “Oh dear,” she said again.
Reason tried to reassert itself when she spotted the dog, sitting at the wolver’s heels. Out of all the thoughts whirling in her head, only one made it to her tongue.
“You can’t bring the dog in here, and out there, it must be on a leash.”
“Actually, I was looking to rent a room for a few days.” He stepped through the doorway and closed the door behind him. “Miss Kincaid? I think you should sit down.”
Her face fell into a different kind of frown. Etiquette, practiced for years, was lost. Words of polite discourse were nowhere to be found. “How do you know my name?” she asked rudely.
“You told the guy you just gave the ass whuppin’ to. It’s Miss Kincaid, you said.”
She started to reprimand him for his language and then her befuddled brain kicked in and she realized what he’d said. “How much did you hear?” she asked in a high pitched squeak that sounded nothing like her own well-modulated voice.
“From the minute the bastard spoke,” he told her, grinning. “I was standing in the doorway, admiring your, um, dustpan skills, when the jackass made a crack about your…”
“You saw the whole thing? Why didn’t you speak?” And save her from making a fool of herself.
“Should I have? You looked like you had it under control.” He winked at her. “Next time I’ll remember to step in.”
“There won’t be a next time, Mr.… I’m afraid I didn’t get your name.”
“Challenger McCall, though most folks just call me…”
“Sheriff McCall.” She rolled her eyes heavenward with a silent prayer to the Good Lord to strike her dead without delay.
“I hope so,” he said, starting to laugh. “Is that a problem?”
“No, sir, of course not. Why would it be?”
“I don’t know. You just seem a little upset by it, that’s all.”
Upset? Why would she be upset? It couldn’t be because the visitor, who should be, as all visitors were, gone in the next day or two never to return, a visitor who witnessed the most improper, unrefined and disrespectable circumstance she’d ever found herself in, turned out to be the very handsome and unsettling new sheriff. Oh, heavens no. That wouldn’t be upsetting at all. Her stomach rolled and fluttered in unaccustomed discomfort, as if she’d ingested something alive and still moving. Panic started to rise.

Jackie believes in the beauty of all women and thinks most women don’t see themselves as they should (herself included). Some of her heroes are movie star handsome, while others are not. All her characters are beautiful in the eyes of their lovers and that, to Jackie, is the most beautiful of all.

Description:
The League of Rogues takes what they want—but have they taken on too much?

For too long Miss Emily Parr has been subject to the whims of her indebted uncle and the lecherous advances of his repulsive business partner. Her plan to be done with dominating men forever is simple—find herself a kind husband who will leave her to her books.

It seems an easy enough plan, until she is unexpectedly abducted by an incorrigible duke who hides a wounded spirit behind flashing green eyes.

Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex, spends countless nights at the club with his four best friends, and relishes the rakish reputation society has branded him with. He has no plans to marry anytime soon—if ever. But when he kidnaps an embezzler’s niece, the difficult debutante’s blend of sweetness and sharp tongue make him desperate for the one thing he swears he never wanted: love.

Yet as they surrender to passion, danger lurks in Godric’s shadowed past, waiting for him to drop his guard—and rob him of the woman he can’t live without.

Review:

WICKED DESIGNS by Lauren Smith is proving to be a superb first novel in an exciting new series. The novel starts with a kidnapping!! That’s a pretty exciting and humorous event. Usually, I don’t like when our hero kidnaps their lady, but this event was well written and action packed!

It seems that our heroine’s uncle owes Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex some money, so Godric kidnaps our heroine. Trust me readers, Miss Emily Parr does not go easily or quietly. It seems that our league of rogues has met their match. Our “bad boys” of the ton, love their naughty image, but underneath their roguish exteriors, they are all great men. Don’t be overwhelmed with the amount of characters introduced at the beginning. They are all going to become fabulous, swoon-worthy, leading men in their own stories! Fingers crossed!!

Back to our main couple! Godric has no plans on marrying, he has too many demons in his past, but Emily is slowing pulling down his barriers. She is such a wonderful woman! She tries to escape her captors throughout the novel, through very ingenious ways. All of the men grow to respect and like her and become very protective towards her. The league of rogues does have some rules: One is that Godric has first dibs on Emily! We have a very sinister and creepy bad guy who wants our heroine too! Will our league of rogues be able to protect Emily from harm and will Godric ever find peace and love?

This is such a wonderful Regency romance. I started reading and could not put it down until the end. The author has created some great characters. It’s one of those books where I loved the woman as much as the brooding hero! I look forward to reading further rogue escapades, because these men love getting into trouble! Enjoy!

Love’s Sorrow by Terri Rochenski – a Review

Love’s Sorrow by Terri Rochenski – a Review

Love's SorrowAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
Hired as a nanny for her cousin’s children, Anne Tearle finds security and a loving family. The children are a dream, but London society is a world of its own, one where a displaced farm girl has no business being. But, wealthy rake, Gavin MacKay, helps her to see associating with the upper class might not be as horrid as she first assumed.

Like all things worthwhile, love comes at a price, and the cost soon bestows more anguish than joy. Lost, but not undone, Anne must find the courage to begin life anew, or succumb to sorrow’s unrelenting waves of grief.

Review
Love’s Sorrow is the first book of the Means of Mercy series by Terri Rochenski. I had a confusing time with this review, at first, until Sandy found out this was to be continued in the next book.

The story is well written and intriguing. A historical romance with all the finery and dresses we love to hear about. Anne Tearle is a young orphaned farm girl, raised in her uncle’s house by a wicked evil aunt. Cinderella type story has her uncle (not evil like his wife) going to live with an estranged cousin in the guise of being a tutor for her cousins two boys. Upon arriving, she was treated as family instead and introduced into London society.

Our young heroine falls in love and gets married to a handsome wealthy young Scottish man, Gavin MacKay. All seemed perfect as he seemed to be in love and attentive to his new bride, lavishing her with clothes, gifts and an enormous house.

I’m purposefully leaving out the wonderful details, so you can enjoy them for yourself! As I said before, this is well written and interesting.

After a few years of trying to have children, Gavin’s big dream, there are miscarriages and one infant death after only 3 days. This takes its toll incredibly, as would be expected, at this point Gavin has reverted to his mistresses and is a drunken despot (I’m greatly distressed, because I thought him wonderful and reformed by Anne’s love). Anne finds him in bed with another woman and leaves him, really unusual for the times. She proceeds to file for divorce, completely unheard of in the times. She is thwarted by gossip started by him calling her a liar, witch, and so much more. Whereupon, she escapes London to her friends in America, where her maid and friend marries and leaves her alone but with friends. She finds herself pregnant from a bruising rape her husband performed before she found him abed with the other woman.

The book ends on a cliffhanger with her vowing to keep the child from Gavin, if it, indeed, lives.

I’m so glad to know it will continue and Anne will find love again. I spent a couple of days in a horrible humor wondering how to write this, not knowing about book two! I’m a HEA or at least a HFN kind of gal and really looking forward to a better solution for dear Anne!

This is an excellent and complicated story, and I for one will be waiting for the next installment with baited breath! The characters in this are well done, the situations realistic…I’m just so glad it didn’t end here!

Description:
Everything has come easily to Reid Knowles, the middle son of a California ranching family. But his charmed life is suddenly complicated when his good friend and neighbor asks him to help run the winery next door. His neighbor’s niece, Mia Bodell, is in charge—and she has made it clear that she’d rather be roped to a steer than to Reid Knowles. Never one to back down from a challenge, Reid vows to win her trust.

Her life marked by loss, Mia knows that nothing comes easily—love included. In high school, her heart was crushed by Reid, and even though years have passed, the hurt lingers. Mia is achingly aware that the teen heartthrob has matured into a devastatingly handsome playboy, and the budding winemaker refuses to let down her guard. But one taste of unbridled passion changes things. From Reid’s first intoxicating kiss to his unexpectedly tender seduction, Mia is swept into a passionate affair that could tear her heart to pieces . . . or give her everything she has ever wanted.

Review:
4 stars… I really liked this story.

Wine has never been my favourite drink, but the details the author put in this book was amazing.

Mia has a secret, but it’s one she thinks the whole town knows about. But the town has moved on, Mia isn’t gossip material any more. But she won’t let the past be the past, she has let it shape her future, she is insecure, she is scared, but she does love Reid with her whole heart.

Reid sounds like a typical good looking cowboy, women throwing themselves at him, but Reid is different from most good looking cowboys. He has a heart and morals. He only plays with women who know it will never go any further than a good time, this said, Reid still has them flocking to him, like bees round honey. And at first reading his character, I wasn’t really impressed. I like my cowboys rough and ready, but I like them with a secret. I like them to want to find a good woman and settle down. Reid has a secret, he has longed for Mia for just as long as she has for him.

And with that I leapt in to the book. It’s beautifully written, I cried with Mia, I wanted to punch and shout at Reid, and I cheered when the bad guy got his just desserts.  There were lots of intense moments, but it didn’t take anything away from the story. There were a few “oh my god” moments. And I did need a tissue (or two). I would recommend this author to anyone. And I for one, will be going back to read the first book, and will add the third book to my TBR list.

Interview beige   TRC:  Laura, we would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. We are always looking forward to finding out about the author behind the book, and it is a pleasure to welcome you to The Reading Cafe.

Laura MooreLaura : Thanks so much for having me. It’s a thrill!

TRC:  Please tell us about yourself

Laura: I write contemporary romances with rugged, outdoorsy heroes and strong heroines. Both my heroes and heroines are passionate about their lives and their loves. My stories are often centered around small towns, family ties, and four-legged creatures big and small. Happily my new release, Once Tasted, has all of the above. When I’m not writing, I’m a wife and a mom and a dog owner with aspirations to once again own a horse or three. I love to ride, bike, swim, take walks on the beach, garden, cook, and relax with family and friends. I love old movies (anything with Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart, Grace Kelly). I’m also an avid museum-goer and a voracious reader. I’ve lived in big cities and small towns and love aspects of both.

TRC:  Did you always have an interest in writing? When and how did you first start writing?

Laura: I came to writing fairly late, in my twenties. I’ve always loved creating. I drew and did photography, ceramics, and sculpture but I didn’t really try my hand at writing until I was in graduate school studying art education. A story came to me and I started scribbling it in the back of my notebook during some of my less than captivating classes. That story, Ride a Dark Horse, became the first book I sold.

TRC:   What was your first book ever published? Can you please describe your reaction when you found out you were going to be published?

Laura: Ride A Dark Horse was the first book I published and, as I described above, I wrote it pretty much on a whim and to entertain myself while some of my art education professors prosed on. I was stunned when an agent not only agreed to represent me, but then turned around and got me a two-book deal. I had to learn an awful lot very fast after I signed that contract but, boy, was it exciting!

TRC:   Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Laura: I don’t find anything easy about writing. I think the fact that it’s so difficult is why I love it as an art form. There’s so much you have to get right: the voice; the characters; the plot; the setting; the dialogue; the conflicts…and then the writing has to be good. And though I’m on my tenth book, I often feel as if I forget every lesson I’ve learned when I compose the first sentence of my new novel.

TRC:  Can you please tell us the premise of your Silver Creek series? Also, how many books are you planning for this series?

Laura: Silver Creek is the name of a three thousand-acre guest ranch located in northern California. The ranch is owned and run by the Knowles family. The series tells the story of the adult children, Ward, Reid, and Quinn, who’ve grown up on this magnificent ranch and help their parents run it. It’s possible that I’ll expand the series to include stories devoted to other characters who work on the ranch or in the neighboring town, but for the moment I’m sticking with the Knowleses. They’re quite a family.

Once TastedTRC:  Once Tasted was recently released. Can you please give us a brief description of this book?

Laura: Once Tasted tells the story of Reid Knowles. A smooth-talking, laidback cowboy, Reid and his bright blue eyes can dazzle just about any woman–except for Mia Bodell, whose youthful infatuation for Reid was killed years ago. For his part, Reid would just as soon steer clear of Mia and her pointed disdain. Unfortunately, he’s made a promise to Mia’s uncle to help Mia manage the winery she and her uncle own that neighbors Silver Creek Ranch. All too soon the sparks begin to fly between Mia and Reid as their long-denied attraction becomes impossible to ignore.

TRC:   For those who may not have read the first book in the Silver Creek series, can Once Tasted be read as a standalone?

Laura: Absolutely. All the books in the series I write can be read as standalones.

TRC:  You write Romance. Do you ever have a desire to write another genre?

Laura:  I’m a hopeless romantic. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than writing about people who find love, and nothing more challenging than making my readers truly believe in the hero and heroine’s chances at a happily ever after.

TRC:  What is your writing process? Do you have a favorite spot or time? Do you like to outline your stories or just go with the flow?

Laura:  My best time for writing is in the morning, after I’ve come back from an early walk with my dog. My head is clearest then and the words flow fairly smoothly. I’m a big animal person and so I like to write close to my dog, which means I’m either sitting at our dining room table with him lying by my feet or we’re sitting next to each other on the sofa. Thank goodness for laptops! When I’m starting a story I often have a synopsis and a loose outline with some scenes serving as the joints. From there on I basically alternate between a pantsing, go with the flow attitude, and taking a bit of time to map out the next key scenes. It’s not a very organized system but I kind of like the process of discovering even more about my characters as I go.

TRC:  What are you working on now, and what we can look forward to in 2015?

Laura:  I’m writing Quinn Knowles’s story now. It’s called Once Touched. Quinn’s a great character, a cowgirl and a fervent animal-lover. She doesn’t have much time for a man and the hassle of a relationship but then two men arrive at the guest ranch, one a handsome Texan wrangler, the other a photojournalist wounded in Afghanistan. And suddenly Quinn finds her aversion to men turning into something else. The question is who will win this cowgirl’s heart?

TRC:   On your website you talk about your love of horses, and competing in shows. You have a love of water and scuba diving. Do you use this love and your experiences when writing your books?

Laura:  Absolutely. I only wish I had more time to do field research for my books! Of course I do a lot of armchair research, too, reading articles and watching videos. And I have a pretty wide range of acquaintances and connections who are more than happy to share their expertise with me. In Once Tasted, my heroine Mia Bodell is a winemaker. I’m lucky to have a friend who’s a vintner in California who answered a ton of questions and explained the winemaking process to me. The idea for the Silver Creek Ranch came from some other friends of mine who own and run a hotel. Their description of it was so fascinating I couldn’t resist the idea of giving my characters that kind of life.

TRC:   Many authors have friends or family, that they bounce ideas and information back and forth. Do you have anyone you like to discuss your stories with?

Laura: I have a wonderful critique partner, Marilyn Brant, who’s always willing to let me stumble my way through the various ideas I have about my characters or my story. And Marilyn reads my early drafts, angel that she is. My family is pretty fantastic. They read and offer comments–my husband’s a professor, so he doesn’t miss a single misplaced comma–and let me whine in despair for a good fifteen minutes before reminding me that I said exactly the same thing with the previous book.

TRC:   Would you like to add anything else?

Laura: Just to leave you with a little more Once Tasted:

Three siblings, an extraordinary family, a lasting heritage—in the irresistible Silver Creek Ranch trilogy, they’ll fight for the land and the people they love. Everything has come easily to Reid Knowles, the middle son of a California ranching family. But his charmed life is suddenly complicated when his neighbor, Thomas Bodell, persuades him to help with the business management of his winery, which he is leaving to his niece, Mia. In a life marked by loss, nothing has ever come easily to Mia Bodell. Love included. In high school her heart was crushed by Reid. The hurt lingers. When Mia learns of her uncle’s plan, she makes it clear that she’d rather be roped to a steer than to Reid Knowles. A night of unbridled passion changes things. One taste of Mia awakens an unfamiliar yearning in Reid, and he vows to find a way to win her trust.             Mia is achingly aware that her teenage heartthrob has matured into a devastatingly handsome man. But can the budding winemaker trust her heart to a playboy with no interest in settling down? From Reid’s first intoxicating kiss to his unexpectedly tender seduction, Mia is swept into a passionate affair that could leave her heart in pieces . . . or give her everything she has ever wanted.

Oh, damn, he must be back. Mia Bodell didn’t need to be a modern-day Sherlock Holmes to guess who’d put the dreamy expression on Tracy Crofta’s face at Spillin’ the Beans. The barista fairly floated over the wide-planked, unvarnished floors as she took Mia’s order, humming to the hissing of the steamer as she prepared her triple-shot latte. There were other signs, too. Tracy wasn’t the only blissed-out female in the coffee shop. Betty Shales, who was sixty if she was a day, wore a beatific smile. Stationed behind the cash register, she stopped patting her gray dreadlocks only long enough to take Mia’s money. But in case Mia had suffered temporary blindness and missed the women’s joyous glow, she’d have had to be wearing earplugs to miss the trills of laughter and excited chatter when, latte in hand, she walked in to the post office—which also housed the local bank, general store, and luncheonette. Not many towns could boast of having a post office where you could not only pick up your mail but also cash your checks, order a stack of buttermilk pancakes or a burger, pick up a loaf of bread and a bottle of Tide, and get your daily dose of the latest happenings in Acacia, too. The post office–general store–luncheonette wasn’t just Acacia’s hub. It was Gossip Central. Mia wasn’t big on gossip. She’d been the butt of it too often. But as she inserted her key into the metal mail- box and retrieved the mail, dropping half of it into the recycling bin and tucking the rest of it—bills, bills, and more bills—under her arm, the air around her buzzed. Reid Knowles’s name reverberated from all corners of the interior. There was no escaping it. The scent of freshly baked goods filled the spacious interior—another reason why the post office was such a popular place. Knowing how much her uncle Thomas loved the luncheonette’s blueberry muffins, Mia got in line. And since no good deed went unpunished, she spent the next few minutes breathing in the aroma of melted butter, flour, and sugar while listening to Maebeth Krohner and Nancy Del Ray, who were working the morning shift at the luncheonette, sing Reid Knowles’s praises. “Mm-hmm, yeah, he got back today and dropped in to say hi.” Nancy’s voice held a wealth of satisfaction. Nancy had two small children and was five years older than Reid, but that didn’t stop the divorcée from tracking his coming and goings with the breathlessness of a tween at a One Direction concert. “Dang.” Maebeth shook her head. “I knew I didn’t need to fold the clothes sitting in the dryer this morning. I’d have seen Reid otherwise. Was he looking as fine as ever?” Thirty and single, Maebeth made no bones about how much she liked Reid—really liked Reid. In this she was not alone. “Could you doubt it? The man rode his motorcycle all the way from South Carolina. He came in here looking windblown and scruffy,” Nancy replied. “Oh Lord.” Maebeth made a show of fanning herself. It was nine a.m.; the luncheonette was busy and would stay that way until around two o’clock. Yet even as the two women dropped slices of multigrain bread into the toaster, set plates filled with steaming scram- bled eggs and hash browns in front of hungry customers, and deposited stacks of dirty plates and empty coffee cups into a partially filled black rubber tub, their conversation didn’t skip a beat. “Such a bummer I missed him,” Maebeth repeated dolefully. “You think he’ll be at The Drop tonight?” “I expect so,” Nancy said. “His being back sure will liven up the place.” Nancy nodded in agreement. “Mom’s already offered to take the kids tonight so I can slip into my boogie shoes.” Mia was tempted to roll her eyes at the women’s pre- occupation with Reid Knowles and his limitless appeal. She refrained, reminding herself about throwing stones at glass houses.

Wedding dress designer and boutique owner Bianca Bradshaw always plays by the rules—until Sergei. The Russian behemoth broke down the walls guarding her heart as easily as he kicked down her front door. After a wild, passionate love affair that’s the talk of Houston’s underworld leaves them facing an unplanned but very much wanted pregnancy, Bianca can’t imagine a single day without Sergei in her life—and in her bed.

Freed from the clutches of the Russian mob by her tenacious love, former enforcer and prize fighter Sergei Sakharov intends to give Bianca exactly what she wants. He’s going to make that luscious, curvy beauty his wife and spend the rest of his life making her happy.

Or, at least, that’s the plan.

But Sergei quickly learns that no one ever really gets out of the life. When unfinished business threatens the family he’s trying to build with the woman who forever holds his heart, he’ll have to make a hard choice. To protect his pregnant wife, there is no line Sergei won’t cross.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SERGEI Volume 2 is the continuing story of Sergei Sakharov and the love of his life Bianca Bradshaw. Volume 2 begins a few days following the end of Sergei Volume 1 (December 2013) where Bianca had ‘bought’ Sergei’s contract from the Russian Mob and announced she was pregnant with Sergei’s child. The storyline advances the series six to seven months and is told from alternating first person (Bianca) POV and close third person.

The premise of this story brings most of the previous storyline characters together as the group heads to London, England for Vivian’s (Nikolai) art show. Along the way Sergei’s mother and brother will to be introduced to his future bride but the old Russian values run deep when Bianca’s African American heritage proves too much for Sergei’s mom. Prejudice is rampant and Bianca has been forewarned by the newest member of the Russian protectors.

Not to be forgotten, the death of Bianca’s father and brother will once again be brought front and center when one of the men responsible wants to face the family that was left behind. Sergei’s protective nature goes on high alert but Bianca’s need to help her mother forgive will place everyone in danger when The Cartel and the gangs target the women as retribution against the Russian Mob.

The relationship between Sergei and Bianca continues to be seductive and hot. Sergei is a man who has lost both his heart and his soul to the woman who carries the next generation of family and love. Sergei is an Alpha Russian male whose over protective nature knows no boundaries yet his future bride continues to push at every barrier that has been put into place. Needless to say their battle of wills will place Bianca into a life an death situation where no one will come away unharmed.

The world building continues as we are reacquainted with most of the previous storyline heroes and heroines. With the introduction of two new protectors, Roxie Rivera has planted the seeds for many more storylines to come.

SERGEI Volume 2 takes the reader on a journey of love and a happily ever after-for now. All of our heroes know that their previous life with the Russian mob has placed everyone they love in danger and with it will come the need to protect at all costs.

Roxie Rivera’s Russian Protectors are sexy yet sweet; strong yet vulnerable; passionate and wise. The men will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of family and friends but when it comes to the women that hold on to their hearts, being over protective is something that comes naturally and for a very good reason.

When he learns some creep is bothering Bianca, Sergei Sakharov vows to protect her at all costs. He’s been trying to get close to the plus-sized beauty for months but she rejects him at every turn. He’s determined to show her that he’s worth more as a man than his criminal connections.

Because the darkness of the underworld he inhabits is about to spill into Bianca’s life and the hardest choice may be the only one that allows him to protect her…

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SERGEI is the fifth instalment in Roxie Rivera’s adult, contemporary romance Her Russian Protect series. This is Sergei and Bianca’s story. Sergei is an MMA fighter and what can only be called an ‘enforcer’ for Nikolai’s mob. Nikolai ‘owns’ Sergei and Sergei is working to pay off the debt.

Bianca and Sergei have been dancing around one another for five months. They are mutually attracted to one another but Sergei’s’ world and Bianca’s life should never have met. But Bianca lost a brother in a store hold up that went horribly wrong, and as the only remaining witness, it is believed Bianca’s life is at risk. While the relationship between Sergei and Bianca develops, so too do the stalker sightings and potential threats against her life.

Roxie Rivera pulls the reader into a storyline where a seven foot tall, alpha Russian male falls hard and fast for a dress designer with aspirations of making it big in the world for high fashion and wedding designs. Sergei is a quiet and gentle soul whose need for Bianca burrows deep into his heart and into his soul. But his life and connections to the mob will force Sergei to make a decision that will cost him the only woman that he has ever loved.

The sexual attraction is palpable as is the dark sensuality that is Sergei Sakharov. He is a man possessed by his need to protect the woman that he loves and bring the family that he left behind to America.

All of the previous storyline couples play secondary and recurring roles throughout SERGEI’s story as they have in the four other novels of Her Russian Protector series. Roxie keeps the familiar up front and center, so that the reader is up to date on the lives and loves of her Russian heroes and the women they love.

SERGEI is a passionate storyline about love and loss; betrayal and hope; jealousy and revenge. And it is also a story about two people who make a commitment to one another that family will always come first because at the end of the day-it is all about the family that you love and that loves you back.

The smolderingly sexy former Marine runs a successful gym down the street and coaches her brother’s special needs baseball team. He’s the one man who is always there when she needs him. If anyone can protect her family, it’s commanding, capable Jack.

The moment he learns someone is threatening Abby and her brother, Jack sees red. To save the woman he’s secretly loved for years, he’ll do whatever it takes, even if it means facing off with a Mexican drug cartel and making deals with the same Albanian mob outfit that tried to ruin his family.

He finally has sweet, feisty Abby right where she was always meant to be—writhing with pleasure in his bed and safely sheltered in his arms. The vicious cartel assassin hot on her heels has no idea what he’s up against.

The Connolly brothers are standing strong together—and no one touches their family.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: IN JACK’S ARMS is the second instalment in Roxie Rivera’s contemporary, adult, erotic Fighting Connollys Trilogy. The Fighting Connollys is a spin-off series from Roxie’s ‘Her Russian Protector’ series and focuses on the Connolly brothers-three former Marines and the women they love. You do not have to read Her Russian Protectors to follow the Fighting Connollys. Some of the characters and premises from the previous series overlap and carry over into the Fighting Connollys. This is Abby Kirkwood and Jack Connelly’s story.

The premise focuses on a robbery, a series of threats and a number of questionable sales at the family run pawn shop owned by Abby Kirkwood. Digging further into the problem Abby will find herself caught in a war between the Albanian mob and a Mexican drug cartel who are willing to take down anyone standing in their way. Enter Jack Connolly-the man who would die to protect Abby and her younger brother Mattie. When a once trusted employee is caught between family and the law, Abby and her brother will be pulled into a game of life and death.

The relationship between Abby and Jack evolves from friends to lovers. For a number of years, Abby and Jack have been dancing around one another much to Jack’s dismay. But Abby has been preoccupied trying to keep her grandfather’s business afloat while raising her mentally handicapped brother. When the realization finally hits, Abby knows that she has lost her heart to Jack and that he may just be the one. The sex scenes are steamy and the relationship is sensual and hot.

The secondary characters are colorful and many from Her Russian Protector series. From the Mexican drug cartel to the Russian and Albanian mob, The Fighting Connollys is a series of action, suspense and romantic relationships between the rich and powerful in a world we only read about in the news.

Dare to Resist

.99cent ebook special: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 12, 2014

Trapped and tempted, this battle of wills rages all night long…

Kady Dresco and Colton Brooks click on a level that defies logic. There are only two problems. One, he’s her older brother’s irritating best friend, and two, they’re bidding on the same military security services contract.

When the competition heats up, Colton is torn between wanting to strangle Kady (and her annoying brilliance) and kissing her into submission. Which is a bad idea for a million reasons, because Kady’s submission is exactly what he craves. Being trapped in a tiny motel room with the object of his darkest fantasies will require every ounce of his restraint.

Kady doesn’t want his restraint, but Colton knows better. She deserves love, marriage, and a white picket fence—three things Colton can’t give her. But her proximity and the memory of their steamy near-miss three years ago slowly destroys his resolve. And he’s not sure how much longer he can keep his hands off…or his heart closed.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DARE TO RESIST is the first storyline and novella in Entangled (Brazen) Publishing’s new contemporary, adult A Wedding Dare romance series. With five storylines in total, each consecutive instalment will focus on a different couple, written by a different author. DARE TO RESIST is Colton Brooks and Kady Dreso’s storyline and it is the introductory novella of the Wedding Dare series.

Dare To Resist follows Kady and Colton as they struggle with their mutual attraction to one another. Kady is the younger sister of Colton’s best friend and for all intents and purposes is off limits-not only because she is his best friend’s little sister but Colton’s sexual needs go beyond gentle and soft. With both in contention for government contract, Kady and Colton will find themselves stranded in a cheap motel during a monsoon that has hit the area closing airports, freeways and all transportation in and out of the city. What ensues is a friends to lovers story where Colton will discover that the little girl he has wanted for so many years is no longer the wide eyed teen that was his forbidden fruit.

The relationship between Kady and Colton is sexy, aggressive, vulnerable and new. Kady has wanted to explore this particular side of her sexual nature and Colton is the perfect man to bring it on.

The secondary characters are limited as the storyline focuses on the building relationship between two people who have wanted one another for years. By way of mention, Laura will introduce the upcoming characters in future Wedding Dare storylines

Laura Kaye has written a sexy and sensual introductory novella that is the stepping stone for the Wedding Dare series. Each successive storyline in the series will focus on one couple who will find love at Kady and Colton’s wedding.
