Review:

A Seal’s Mission by Rachel Kall is the 2nd book in her Love and Scandal series. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, and was happy to read this book. Kall continues with another fabulous romance suspense story.

A Seal’s Mission begins with our heroine, Rowena Murphy, a journalist, on assignment in Afghanistan. One night she is kidnapped, but she is soon rescued by Navy Seals. Rowena is an investigative reporter, who has been working on a major conspiracy involving the government and secret weapons. 6 months after her rescue, she suspects her life may be in danger, and that the kidnapping was part of the government trying to stop her. She tries to investigate the Navy Seal who helped her, so that she can thank him for saving her life, and one day he shows up at her door.

Scott Ranger, is our hero and the hot Navy Seal who helped rescue Rowena. He discovers her trying to research him and goes to find out why. At first Scott isn’t sure whether to believe Rowena about the government and the weapons, but she shows him proof that makes him pay closer attention. While he is still talking to Rowen, there is an attempt on her life, with Scott saving her again. At this point, Scott decides to help Rowena to find out who is behind the murder attempts, and the conspiracy.

What follows is a very exciting suspenseful story, with Scott and Rowena not knowing who to trust, as they discover how deep this conspiracy is. Scott begins to fall for Rowena, as she does too, but she is hesitant to become involved with any man, having been hurt long ago. This turns into a beautiful romance, as Rowena and Scott were a great couple. Also, Kall has created some very good secondary characters, whom I would love to learn more about in future books.

To give any more information would be spoilers, since there were so many twists throughout this exciting story. A Seal’s Mission is a thrilling suspenseful tale, filled with action, danger, betrayals, and a wonderful romance. Rachel Kall has written another wonderful addition to her Love and Scandal series.

Blue Midnight by Tess Thompson – a Review

Blue Midnight by Tess Thompson – a Review

Blue MidnightAmazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

Description:
“If you change your mind, here’s this.” Finn Lanigan kissed a young Blythe Heywood one last time under a star-scattered Idaho sky. It was the last kiss that ever weakened her knees, the last sky she noticed for over a dozen years. Then she left, returning to her fiancé, the wedding she’d committed to, and the secure life she’d yearned for since she was a little girl.

Thirteen years later, her husband leaves Blythe for his young associate. Devastated, she’s unable to imagine the next chapter of her life as she packs her family’s belongings to move across town. Unexpectedly, she finds the forgotten slip of paper bearing Finn’s phone number in the back of a drawer.

Hadn’t she tossed it years before as a newlywed, when she vowed to be the perfect wife and mother? Apparently not. Here it remained. Her road not taken.

Facing three weeks without her young daughters, Blythe sets out to find the man she left behind so long ago. With only the name of the small town where he once lived, Peregrine, Idaho, and the memory of their last kiss under a starry sky, she heads across the Pacific Northwest in search of him.

What she finds in the foothills of Blue Mountain challenges everything she thought she knew and is the very last thing she expected. Within days, her life changes forever. But it is her destiny and destinies cannot be denied.

The first book of the Blue Mountain Collection, laced with Thompson’s lovable but complex characters, “Blue Midnight” is a mature love story about second chances, family, and the complexities of trust and vulnerability after betrayal.

 Review:

Oh my lord. I love this woman, and her writing skills. There is nothing of hers that I have not fallen in love with. Yes the pace is slow, but, dang it’s worth the wait.

In Blue Midnight by Tess Thompson, the scenes she writes, put you straight in the picture. The characters are so 3 dimensional, and as can be expected of Tess, tears of joy and sadness will be shed.

Poor Blythe, on the scrap heap of life, and only barely out of her forties. Replaced by a younger model, all her so called friends have abandoned her, and she faces bringing her kids up on her own.

Her ex husband is getting married, and he wants his daughters and new wife to bond, so he takes them all away to Hawaii on a honeymoon/holiday. Blythe takes this pretty hard, and the bathroom scene in which she breaks down, had me in tears

Her sister Bliss, is a no nonsense kind of woman, (I really liked her). She talks her sister into taking a road trip. She wants her sister to take up a long forgotten hobby (of photography) to travel for three weeks, and to take pictures. Aafter Blythe confesses to her about a mystery man she met and kissed, (and still has his number), Bliss wants her to find him, and see where it takes her. She wants her big sister to have a BIG ADVENTURE.

And as for Finn ……. (I’m not going to say anything) but be prepared for a man who knows what he wants, and knows how to get it

The scenery that Blythe visits it’s so well written, that you can close your eyes and picture it all so clearly.

So …. To sum this book up, disappointment, love, heartbreak, suspense, family drama, and a little mystery is thrown in for good measure. This is just a portion of what makes this book a great read. The characters in Blue Midnight are such wonderful people, some I totally loved, others I wasn’t so taken with, and others ….. those I could have happily slapped

This is a complex story that most people will be able to relate to. So, If you are looking for a solid story about starting over and the road not taken, this is it. I can’t recommend this book enough. Another fantastic read.

In Australia sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but multiple attempts on Aiden’s life are made while Cordelia is with him, and he realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most.

 Review:

Fast Track by Julie Garwood is the 12th book in her Buchanan/Renard series. I have read the last few books in this series, and have loved them. However, after reading this one, I need to go back and see which of the earlier books have the characters from this story. I totally loved them all. Unless you want to read the other books, it is not necessary as these books can be read as standalones very well.

We are introduced to our heroine, Cordelia (Cordie) when she was just 5 years old. She lives alone with her father, as her mother died not long after she was born. When she attends her first day at kindergarten, she meets her friends, Sophie Rose and Regan Madison. The three girls, would remain inseparable friends for life, as well as the other members of their families. Even at the age of 5, Cordie developed a crush on Regan’s older brother Aiden, but she hid her secret well.

We switch to current day, where Cordie, now in her twenties, is sitting by her father’s bedside in the hospital, as he is near death. Andrew Kane was a simple auto mechanic in the early days, who rose to be a multi-millionaire, owning all the Kane Automotive stores he built. Before he takes his last breath, he tells Cordie that he has protected her in his will, so that “she” cannot touch it. Confused, Cordie asks “who”? In his last breath, he tells her that her mother was still alive.

After the funeral, with her friends (Regan and her husband Alec; Sophie and her husband, Jack; both of whom we met in earlier books, Aiden and the other brothers) there to give her support, Cordie confides to them the shocking truth about her mother. She shows them the goodbye letter her mother wrote her father when she left him, saying she it was mistake, she wanted a better life, and did not want custody “You can have her”. With that statement, Cordie wants nothing to do with her mother. Only after a bit, she decides she would just like to see her once, to see if she got everything she wanted in life, with no feeling about her betrayal of her heartbroken father.

What follows is a great story of finding her mother with the help of her friends (Alex and Jack are FBI agents). Aiden, who begins see the grownup Cordie in a different light, finds himself being attracted, as well as protective of her. The story becomes very exciting, as she reveals to her mother who she is, and the repercussions are escalated. Her mother is part of a wealthy powerful family, and Cordie is deemed a threat. Her life is now in danger, and Aiden protectively guards her and brings her home. It is her friends and family that will stand by her and help her fight against the threats that follow her home.

Besides this suspenseful storyline, the romance between Aiden and Cordie is wonderful to watch. Cordie may have had a crush all her life on Aiden, but she never thought that there was ever any hope. This romance built with each passing day that they spent together, with Aiden taking control. The sparks flew over the pages, as their chemistry together was sizzling. I loved the humor between them

Fast Track is a fun filled story, with a wonderful couple, super secondary characters, and an exciting climax at the finish. The romance was a sweet and delightful one, and I adored the friendship of them all. Being a true romantic, I love when there is a nice epilogue, giving us a peek at our heroes at the end. Julie Garwood has another winner.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 21, 2014

Former Marine MacArthur Patton has made a small fortune on top-secret government contracts and black-ops missions, but his new assignment involves something more dangerous—marriage.

Well, fake marriage anyway.

To keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists, Mac has to secure a fiancée. A sweet, demure, compliant fiancée to serve as his arm candy for a few weeks while he completes the covert arms deal in Mexico. His sister claims to know just the woman, and sends her best friend to play the role.

“Sweet” and “demure” aren’t in Kelli Landers’s repertoire. A badass veterinarian who neuters big dogs and bigger men on a regular basis, she can’t wait to bring Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Detached to his knees. Her longtime crush on the commitment-phobe makes her plan to seduce him even sweeter.

Love wasn’t part of the plan, but the deeper Mac and Kelli fall into their ruse, the more danger they attract, until more than just their hearts are on the line…

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FIANCEE FOR HIRE is the second instalment in Tawna Fenske’s adult contemporary Front and Center erotic romance series. This is former marine MacArthur (Mac) Patton and veterinarian Kelli Landers’s storyline. Mac and Kelli were first introduced in the first instalment ‘Marine for Hire’-Mac is Sheri’s brother and Kelli is Sheri’s best friend. Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty.

The focus of the storyline is Mac’s need for a ‘fake fiancee’. Under cover, working on an illegal arms deal, Mac let it be known to his contacts in Mexico that he was newly engaged. Needing someone to portray his fake fiancée, Mac looks to his sister’s best friend Kelli. Little does Mac realize but Kelli has had a crush on Mac since she was a young girl.

The relationship between Mac and Kelli is one born of necessity that turns into something more. Both Mac and Kelli are afraid of commitment; afraid of losing someone they love; and afraid to allow anyone close enough to inflict heartbreak and pain. Mac barely remembers Kelli as his sister’s best friend and discovering there is more to Kelli than a pony-tailed little girl, leaves Mac reeling with emotions he cannot explain. Playing along with the impending nuptials, Kelli and Mac find themselves thrown into dangerous situations where Mac nearly loses Kelli on numerous occasions. Someone is out to destroy Mac’s plans using Kelli as a pawn in an arms deal that goes terribly wrong.

Tawna Fenske pulls the reader into a story of forbidden love between two people who go into the fake relationship knowing that nothing will ever come of it in the end. But like everything in life, nothing is ever a given when Kelli and Mac open their eyes and hearts to the possibility of a happily ever after.

FIANCEE FOR HIRE is a fast paced, erotic and intimate look at a relationship built upon a lie. The secondary characters include Mac’s mother Stella and brother Grant, as well as the armed players in a game of terrorism and weapons deals. Mac’s sister Sheri makes an appearance as the go-to woman for her best friend when things begin to heat up between Kelli and Mac.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 15, 2014

When literary agent Tracy Ratcliffe travels to the sleepy village of Wentworth Cove, Maine, for a much-needed vacation, the most excitement she’s expecting is a sunset walk along the beach. Instead, she hears about a portrait of a woman who looks suspiciously like her that has hung in the local art gallery for years, even though she’s never set foot in Wentworth Cove before. Tracy also meets handsome Nathan Norsworthy, a moody aspiring novelist who takes her breath away. Nathan helps her deal with the suspicion that the man she knew and loved as her father probably wasn’t. That is, until she begins to suspect that Nathan is using her to break into the world of publishing

••••••••••••

Review: ANOTHER SUMMER by Rebecca Stevenson is a contemporary novella. Tracy is a workaholic, who is in Maine for a much needed vacation. She needs time to relax and find the world’s best clam chowder! She is a literary agent in Boston and has neglected her personal life along the way. She soon meets some wonderful locals including the moody gorgeous Nathan.

Turns out that a simple summer vacation might unlock some family secrets and the man she is falling in love with, might be using her for her publishing connections. What’s a girl to do? I can’t reveal too many plotline twists, because it’s a short read as it is!! Tracy’s character needed a little more development and I do think that we needed to see more of the romance. Hey, I love my “happy ever afters”!! I would recommend this novella for any reader who wants to read a short but sweet story. I just think that it was a tad too short. I wanted MORE!

Shifter's Claim

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 29, 2014

Sebastian Perry, gorgeous shape-shifter, has tremendous guilt. Completely disarmed by his momentary hesitation to save a woman, he has fallen into despair. Sworn as a shifter to protect any female in danger, no amount of status, success, or money, can make him feel right again. Prowling around his domain, Bas aches to feel complete, to feel alive, to feel the love of a female. But what woman could possibly trust a man, shifter or not, that cannot protect her?

Priya Drake is tired of fending for herself. Growing up in a family that had nothing but problems, she’s made it to a top newspaper as a reporter, only to continually get snubbed by her boss. When she accidentally witnesses Bas shift, she knows she’s sitting on the scoop that will make her career. But telling the story isn’t so simple. She needs to get her facts straight, and the mounting attraction between her and Bas isn’t helping one bit. Priya thinks she has everything under control, but as the nights get hotter and danger continues to mount, Priya has to ask herself—can she betray the man she loves?

REVIEW: SHIFTER’S CLAIM is the fourth instalment in A.C.Arthur’s adult, contemporary The Shadow Shifters paranormal romance series focusing on a group of feline shifting jaguars originally from the Amazon. This is millionaire resort owner and jaguar Shadow Shifter Sebastian Perry and newspaper reporter (and human) Priya Drake’s storyline. Although this is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand alone but I would suggest reading the series from the beginning to understand all of the lingo etc.

Told from two close third person POVs the focus of the storyline is two fold: Priya is a reporter who suspects that there are shifters among the humans and she has been forced to gather information about their existence. Priya’s involvement has more to do with a threat against someone she loves then revealing the truth about shapeshifters. While Priya looks for answers, Sebastian and his team are called in to investigate a shipment of designer drugs that may be connected to a government facility known as Comastaz Labs, and a rogue band of jaguar shifters. When Priya and Sebastian collide, fur will fly when ‘Bas’, as he is called, denies that Priya is his ‘companheiro’ or mate.

Shifter’s Claim is a detailed storyline that is somewhat dependent on prior knowledge of the series but saying that, it can be read as a stand alone with some minor confusion to previous history. The jaguar shifters have a ruling government not unlike many national political systems and in this the storyline and premise follows a strict guideline of principles and rules. The secondary characters play a major role throughout the story including most of the previous storyline shifters who all have a specific job description. There is a small index at the beginning of the novel that gives some of the definitions and descriptions.

A.C. Arthur pulls the reader into a compelling and imaginative storyline where two people struggle with their attraction to one another. Priya is on a mission to gather information for an unknown source; and Sebastian must stay true to the laws of the shifters and never reveal their existence to human kind. Although Bas’s jaguar knows that Priya is their mate, Sebastian refuses to recognize the call to mate because he knows that he would only bring pain and sorrow to any woman that is connected to him.

Shifter’s Claim is a seductive, intense and spirited storyline of heartbreak and betrayal; family and love; suspense and action. The Shadow Shifter series takes a passionate look at a species whose goal is to survive in a world dominated by human bigotry and specieism, and through it all, each individual shifter will discover that there is someone out there who is the other half to their soul; who must risk love and a happily ever when all around them someone is trying to take them down.

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HER TEMPORARY HERO is the second instalment in Jennifer Apodaca’s (aka Jennifer Lyon) adult, contemporary Once A Marine romance series focusing on a group of ex-Marines and the women that they love. This is Becky Holmes and Logan Knight’s storyline.

Becky is a single mother on the run from her ex boyfriend. Logan is a man who needs a wife before he turns thirty otherwise the land that was promised to him, reverts back to his father. When Logan’s cousin Luce finds a temporary home for Becky and her daughter, she has knowingly pushed the couple into one another’s arms-for better or for worse. As Logan’s dream for setting up a rehab centre for recovering veterans begins to materialize, someone from Logan’s past brings everything to a halt when the truth is finally revealed.

The relationship between Becky and Logan begins as a mutual agreement but soon turns to something more. Becky and Logan marry and for all intents and purposes they are husband and wife-for three months. But life has other plans as Logan begins to fall in love with Becky and her daughter knowing that without his little family life would not be worth living. When Becky’s ex finally tracks her down, everything begins to fall apart when lives are threatened and Logan’s family believes that Becky has taken everyone for a ride. Logan’s family has lots of money and Becky is the perfect excuse to control Logan from the other side.

Jennifer pulls the reader into a romantic story where two people brought together out of necessity remain together out of love. The secondary characters include Logan’s family including half-sisters, step-mother and dad. Logan’s dad is a piece of work, one that doesn’t go unnoticed by his family or Logan’s wife.

HER TEMPORARY HERO is a sweet, romantic and seductive storyline. There is a little bit of cowboy in our hero-a former marine who needs the open spaces and land as much as the recovering soldiers-and in this, we are pulled into the nightmares and memories of war that is still claiming too many heroes and loved ones.

excerpt

At the same second the bathroom door opened, spilling out a billow of steam and a man wearing nothing except a towel loosely wrapped around lean hips. Above that was a rippled abdomen spreading into a muscular chest and shoulders that filled the doorway. On his left bicep he had a tattoo of a horse kneeling before a white cross draped with dog tags.

That tat tugged at her heart. He’d lost someone, and she understood how deep that pain went.

“Oh.” The word squeaked out of her involuntarily. She was tall, nearly five ten, but she had to look up to see his unusual light green eyes that stood out against his darker skin and black hair.

“Need something?”

Even his voice was sexy, pitched low and oh-so-masculine. Really? After a year of her sex drive lying dormant, now her hormones noticed a man?

Title: Cheating Justice
Series: The Justice Team (#2)
Authors: Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano
Release Date: July 21, 2014
Genre: Romantic Suspense

About the book:
While investigating a government cover-up, former FBI agent Mitch Monroe is framed for murder. A wanted man, Mitch has no choice but to stay off the grid, and he needs Special Agent Caroline Foster—the FBI’s top sniper and a woman who wants nothing to do with him—to clear his name.

After sharing a single night of simmering passion with Mitch a year ago, Caroline hasn’t been able to get him out of her head. Or her heart. He’s jeopardized her job once…helping him now could end her career. But a friend has been murdered, and no matter how Caroline feels about Mitch, he’s not the killer. She needs answers, and she needs Mitch Monroe out of her life once and for all.

On the run and with no one to turn to, Mitch and Caroline can’t fight the reigniting passion between them. She’ll lose her career if she proves Mitch is innocent…he’ll lose his life if she doesn’t.

••••••••••••••••••••••••

Review:

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. Cheating Justice begins with Mitch Monroe meeting with one of the few people in the world whom he knows he can trust. But when that person ends up dead and Mitch’s face is plastered all over the news as wanted for his murder, he knows he has to step up his game and figure out what is going on and why they are involving him. He makes the hard decision to go to the one person who can help him. Or, break his heart…………….

Caroline has her path plotted. Top sniper? Check. S.W.A.T.? Working on it. Dots her I’s and crosses her T’s? Absolutely. So, why then, when Mitch Monroe shows up does she feel the need to help him? Yes, she knows he’s an innocent man. But, when he tries to enlist her help to not clear himself, but to clear one of his best friends who has been murdered, she has one answer for him. No. Yeah right…………

Cheating Justice pulls you in from the beginning. Mitch Monroe is an awesome person who you find yourself cheering for from the first time you meet him. His angst over his friends’ demise lets you get a glimpse of the real Mitch. Well, part of him. The other part….the sarcastic, smart, sexy part is the first thing you notice, but once the story progresses, you see more layers developing right before your eyes. Caroline made me laugh out loud, literally. She’s always threatening to shoot folks who tic her off. Yes, she’s buttoned up and a very astute agent, but as with Mitch, you see her layers developing as well. It doesn’t take her long to figure out that maybe the straight and narrow might not be all it’s cracked up to be. And, the chemistry between the two? Smoking hot!!!

The action in this book is awesome as well! I couldn’t wait to see what happened next as I was reading it. I will say, though, that I did get a little blurry eyed trying to remember who all the bad guys were and how they were all tied together. But, in the end?? Awesome story!! Had no idea this was part of a series, but I will tell you, based on this one, I’d love to go back and read the first one and can’t wait for the second. Well done ladies, very well done.

“I always said you had the best ass in the FBI.”
Her body froze. Eleven months, five days and—she did the math—twelve hours had passed since she’d heard that voice. The one she’d thought about time and again after his last brief visit to her apartment, and she still managed to be equal parts pissed off, concerned and flat-out heartbroken. That voice could only belong to one person. Thus the remark about her ass and—wow—she always knew he had a set of stones, but this was too much even for Mitch Monroe. The man she’d spent all these months trying to forget. Months of burying herself in cases, months of begging her boss for every available opportunity to keep her mind occupied, months of a busy life that didn’t allow for downtime.
Or thoughts of Mitch.
Without turning, she picked up her weapon. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. A girl puts her career on the line for you and you don’t call, you don’t write, nothing. To say the least, your technique needs work.”
And then he laughed. She’d waited months to hit him with that line and he laughed. Classic Mitch. She closed her eyes and—forget that he was a federal fugitive now wanted for murder—she’d kill him herself and be done with the whole affair.
Mitch, a murderer? She couldn’t believe it. No matter what the White House was spinning about Kemp Rodgers’ death, Mitch wouldn’t kill his friend.
Then, again, she’d been Mitch’s friend once…
Finally, she turned, bracing herself for whatever disguise might greet her, but found none. Brave.
As usual.
She took in his long brown hair pulled back in a low ponytail, his dark eyes and ripped jeans, and shook her head. “You’re insane for coming here.”
He shrugged. “It’s a private range. Not like I walked into Quantico.”
It wasn’t enough that he’d almost destroyed her career when he’d first started working The Lion case, now he wanted to have a second go at it. He was a fugitive wanted for murder and she was an FBI agent. She should arrest him.
Yet, she stood waiting for him to say something that would make a damned difference. I’m sorry? I didn’t do it? Anything that would erase the idea that he could have murdered his friend.
She set her rifle on the table behind her, slid the bolt open. Not loaded. She knew it wasn’t, but she checked anyway. Always.
Mitch shuffled behind her.
Too bad. He could wait like she’d waited for him all these months.
Her canvas carry case sat on the bench seat. Like many people, she preferred canvas over hard plastic because the softer material didn’t make the rifle sweat. She dug through the case for her lens covers, popped them on, set the rifle into the case—bolt upward—and zipped it.
She’d clean the rifle later. For her, keeping a weapon in top working order meant cleaning it after every use. Even if only one shot had been fired, her weapons got cleaned. Every time.
She sensed Mitch moving closer, stirring the air around her, upsetting the energy, letting her know he was near. He had that way about him. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
“I need your help.”
Of course he did. Should have known. Radio silence for eleven months and now he wanted her help. “I should shoot you and dump your body in the Reflecting Pool.”
“Yeah, you should.”
She spun and—crack!—smacked him, sending his head sideways and making her hand sting. She’d never physically attacked anyone before and she couldn’t say it felt right or just, but unleashing it felt good. To let him know he’d hurt her. “We were friends. I helped you and you disregarded me.”
“Disregarded you?” Mitch slid a hand over his cheek. “I’ve stayed away and I’m sorry. But what, Caroline? You want to do lunch or hit the shooting range with me? A guy wanted for assaulting your boss and now a federal fugitive?” Gently, he knocked on her head. “Think about it. I was protecting you.”
She didn’t need his protection. “I’m mad at you.”
“Atta girl.”
God, he was annoying. “You had a good reason to take a swing at Donaldson when he threatened you during The Lion case, but honest to God, Mitch, I think he should have swung back and ended it right there instead of trying to throw you in jail. But you should have manned up and never run from the charges, so whatever this is, I can’t help you.”
“Tommy Nusco.”
“You murdered him, too?”
Surprisingly, he blanched. “I didn’t kill anyone. I need to know what went down with Tommy.”
Oh, please. He really had lost his mind if he thought she’d touch that subject. That involved ATF and the State of New Mexico and she wasn’t about to step into that snake pit. “You better worry about what went down with Kemp Rodgers and why the White House is after you. Turn yourself in, Mitch.”
“Kemp told me the White House is buzzing about Executive Privilege being invoked on Tommy’s case. A few hours later, he’s dead. Put two and two together, Caroline. There’s a cover-up in the works and what happened to Tommy is at the heart of it.”
She faced him, still hating that he stood a good six inches taller and managed to make her feel small. She folded her arms and stepped forward, got right into his space. “No.”
“Whatever they’re concocting about Tommy is bullshit.”
“I don’t know that.”
“Yeah, you do. When we all worked together, we hung out. You knew him.”
“Not that well.”
He rolled his eyes in that typical I’m-Mitch-Monroe-and-I’m-bored way of his. “He was not dirty. Whatever he was doing, the government is letting a dead agent take the heat. Why not? He’s dead anyway. Doesn’t matter that he was a decorated officer. The government obviously needs to clean up a mess and—” he inched closer, tilted his head and stared right into her eyes “—I know all about how the government cleans up a mess.”
Back away. She should, but that would play into what he wanted. He wanted to control this conversation. His looming presence used to be enough that she’d give him that control.
Not this time.
She tilted her head the opposite direction, eased out a half-smile. “Mitch?”
“Yes?”
“Screw you.”
She turned her back to him and scooped up her rifle case. Right now, she needed to walk away and not let him talk her into something that would wreck her career.
