REVIEW: My Fake Summer Boyfriend is a heartwarming YA summer love story by Ann Herrick.

Katie Price is a soon to be sixteen year old girl, with an undeniable crush. She has it bad for seventeen year old, school newspaper editor, Alex Stedman. With the summer fast approaching Katie better make her move. On the last day of school she crosses paths with Alex just as he is leaving school. When he offers her a ride home she gladly accepts. But the ride is awkward and Katie doesn’t quite know what to say. But as luck would have it her parents are dragging her away to the beach for the summer. She would not get the chance to cultivate the relationship she badly wants with Alex. After trying everything to get out of going on summer vacation, Katie reluctantly gives in. After the urging of her best friend, Samantha, Katie decides that a summer romance may be just what she needs to prepare her for the next school year and for Alex. Heading off on a summer of adventure in Chatfield, Katie is pretty happy about the prospect of a summer romance to get her in practice for the real thing with Alex. Until….She walks to the local store and finds that none other than Alex Stedman working there. Her summer may not be so bad after all.

I loved this story in that it is a classic summer love story. Katie is awkward in her dating / love life – as any wholesome sixteen year old would be. I found that I loved the friendship and bond she found with Alex. The sub-characters of the younger siblings were the right mix of annoying and lovable as any younger sibling would be. And I found that I truly enjoyed their part of the story. Of course with any love story there is those that try to cause chaos in the relationship. And the characters that brought the chaos were perfect, and they came along at just the right moment. I would highly recommend this quick read to anyone that wants an enjoyable classic love story. I can’t wait to share this love story with my daughter, she will absolutely love it as much as I did. I hope to hear more of Katie and Alex in future books – they deserve it.

BORROWED COWBOY (Shadow Maverick Ranch #2) by Parker Kincade

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 24, 2014

Paxton Mathis is committed to bachelorhood. One failed marriage was more than enough to remind him of the dangers of getting too close. He has his work on the ranch; he has his family. He has everything he needs.

Event planner Reese Jameson accepted the job at Shadow Maverick Ranch for one reason: to face her biggest regret. Paxton Mathis was her first love, her first everything. And ten years ago, after a night of unbridled passion, it all came crashing down.

The moment they see each other again, it’s clear the years haven’t doused the heat between them. On the contrary, their flames burn hotter than ever. Despite Paxton’s attempts to keep things casual, old feelings emerge alongside a fierce hunger to keep Reese in his life forever. Reese willingly accepts Paxton’s need to keep things casual, but she’s worried her heart won’t get the message.

When Paxton is forced to face his fears, will history repeat itself, or will he take a chance on a whole new future?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BORROWED COWBOY is the second instalment in Parker Kincade’s adult, contemporary Shadow Maverick Ranch erotic romance series focusing on the Mathis family who own and run the Texas ranch. This is Paxton Mathis and Reese Jameson’s storyline-a second chance at love for two former best friends who were destroyed by a night of passion and a deep seated guilt.

Told from third person POV the focus of the storyline is the rekindling and rebuilding of a relationship between Paxton and Reese that started years before. Reese has been back in Texas for close to two years and hasn’t once made any contact with Pax. When Lauren and Gavin Mathis (Paxton’s brother) hire event planner Reese to help with their upcoming wedding, Reese knows that Pax will eventually cross her path. She isn’t prepared for the emotional fallout from the man she believes blames her for a night that went horribly wrong.

Reece and Pax’s relationship is steamy and hot as though the ten years of separation have never changed their feelings for one another. But Paxton’s faith in humanity was all but destroyed by a former love and letting another woman into his heart is harder than he could have ever imagined.

The world building continues with the inclusion of the Mathis family including Lauren and Gavin from White Collar Cowboy-book one. All of the secondary characters add color and some personal information about a man who has struggled with the demise of a relationship and a betrayal of the heart.

Parker Kincade pulls the reader into fast paced, intimate and romantic storyline of first loves who discover that their feelings for one another have never waned. Pax and Reece’s storyline is a provocative and emotional tale about two people who got caught up in a moment in time and have been given a second chance to claim what should have been their’s all along.

Excerpt beige

Paxton folded his arms. “What’re you doin’ here?”
She suddenly wasn’t so sure. “I’m helping Lauren and Gavin plan their wedding.”
“Ah, right. The event planner. So, is busting into my shower part of the plan?”
Her cheeks heated as the visual of him in the shower hit her. There were worse things to bust into, but that was irrelevant at the moment. “Obviously not.”
His jaw hardened. “After all these years, how would I know what’s obvious about what you’re doing?”
Okay, she probably deserved that. But, still…
“I don’t recall my phone ringing either, buddy.” Did he realize he was only wearing a towel? Good lord.
“I heard you got married,” she blurted. The news had left a permanent scar on her heart. She hadn’t meant to throw that out there, but she needed a reality check in the face of all that muscle. The reminder of his marital status was as good as throwing cold water on her libido. And at the rate her heart was racing, she’d need buckets full.
He shrugged. “Got divorced too. But, since you seem to be keeping tabs, I’m sure you heard about that.”
“I’m not—” Reese trailed off as she saw the corner of his lip twitch.
Snarky bastard.
This was not the way she’d envisioned their reunion. Not that she hadn’t expected him to be mad at her, but she’d imagined he’d at least be wearing clothes. Then again, she never could predict how things would happen when Paxton was involved. Last time she thought she had him figured out, he’d taken her to bed and given her more pleasure than she’d ever known. Then or since.
“I hadn’t heard you’d gotten divorced. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. Some things aren’t meant to be.”
“I guess…” She didn’t know what else to say. Her gaze drifted. The towel draped his hips and thighs, but that didn’t stop her from remembering what was underneath. Her heart beat so hard she could feel it in her throat.
“Did you and Lauren get things hashed out?”
“What?” He really needed to put on some clothes.
“You’re planning the wedding, right? That’s why you’re here?”
“Yeah.” She shook her head, hoping the stupid that had taken possession of her brain would dissipate, and met his gaze. “I mean, yes. Lauren wanted me to help her decide on the best spot to hold the ceremony.”
“And you found a place?” he asked, as though he conversed half naked on a regular basis.
“We did.”
“So, you’re done for the night?”
“Lauren had to rush off to meet Gavin for a dinner meeting. Something about a neighboring ranch, I think she said.”
His lips pursed. He nodded as though he knew exactly what she was talking about. “That’s good.”
Awkward silence filled the space between them. His expression gave away nothing as he stared at her. He was distracting, intimidating … gorgeous.
“We should catch up. Why don’t you let me buy you a drink?”
Her breath caught. “You want to go out?” A sharp pang of desire tightened her stomach.
He leaned against the doorjamb, a slow smile spreading across his face. “After the day I’ve had, not so much. Since you’re here, how about I grab a couple of beers and we can chat a bit.”
“I’ve still got work to do.” Not to mention, the last time they drank together, they ended up naked. While her body thought it was an excellent idea, her heart wouldn’t survive him a second time.
“The wedding isn’t for months. You can spare a few hours for an old friend, can’t you?” He held up his palm. “I promise to be on my best behavior. Unless, of course, you don’t want me to be. Then all bets are off.” He winked at her.
He was flirting with her now? What the hell? “You think you’re gonna get lucky?”
His brows shot up. “Is that even a possibility?”
Reese hesitated long enough to see the wicked grin spread across his face. Damn it. She needed to work on her poker face.
“I suppose anything’s possible, if you think about it,” she hedged.
“That’s not an answer.” He crowded her until her back hit the wall.
She put her palms to his chest with the intent to push him away. Once the heat of his skin hit her, all she could think about was touching him, dragging her hands down until they met the edge of the towel, and then watching as it fell to the floor. “We haven’t seen each other in ten years.”
He brushed his fingertips along her cheek and tucked a loose curl behind her ear. “Still not an answer.”
Her stomach clenched as he leaned in, his breath minty and warm against her lips. Sweet mercy, he was going to kiss her. A kiss she was decidedly desperate for.
“Paxton.” His name came out a plea. To stop, to keep going, to heal the ache that had lived in her heart for too many years.
He cleared his throat and pulled away so abruptly, Reese’s knees almost buckled. He backed away, putting the space of the hallway between them.
“It’s good to see you again, Reesey. I’m sure I’ll see you around.”
Her heart threatened to melt at his use of the personal nickname, and it pissed her off. Three minutes in his presence and she’d turned into a sex-starved half-wit.
She was neither.
Reese wished she had something to hurl at his back as he walked away. Was he so unaffected by her then? Of course he was. It’d been ten years. He’d moved on. As for her … well … she didn’t know what she’d done, but it had felt a little too much like waiting for her taste.
That stopped now.
She’d have a drink, take him up on his offer to talk so she could do what she’d come here to do. Then she’d move on, stop waiting for the impossible romantic fantasy she’d spun all those years ago.
“Give me a few minutes to clean up? I’ll meet you downstairs in fifteen?”
He turned. “You look fine.”
“I’ve been outside with Lauren and am a sweaty mess. What I really need is a shower,” she mumbled.
He gave her a lopsided grin. “As you can see, I’ve already showered, but I could be convinced to have another.”
“That wasn’t an offer.”
“Pity.”
She laughed then, feeling some of her tension ease. “Ten years, and you haven’t changed a bit.”
“Don’t kid yourself, sweets. Ten years ago, you left without a word. Don’t think for a second I’ll let that happen again. Fifteen minutes.”
He started to turn away from her, but stopped, giving her a sly smile. “It’s good to see you again, Reesey.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 6, 2014

This is not your typical happily ever after…

Lauren Brooks wants to do three things: Escape the small town she grew up in, get accepted to her dream school in Chicago, and graduate without drowning in debt. Now she’s working her ass off to do just that.

With a full course load and a waitressing job at one of the hottest night clubs in Chicago, she does not have time for distractions; namely ones who only want to get into her pants. She’s been burned before. Only a fool goes for a second round.. With just two semesters left until graduation, everything’s on track.

Until she meets Cal. Enter distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, deep grey eyes, and a smile that could only hide an agenda, she knows he’s trouble. And for the first time in her life, a little trouble might be just what she needs.

No what she wants.

It isn’t like she’d ever marry the guy. Until she does.

What she thinks will be her happily ever after, is only the beginning. Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and being his wife cost more than she bargained for.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: IF I BREAK is a new adult, contemporary, mystery romance series by Portia Moore. The focus of the storyline is on Lauren Brooks and Cal Scott who first meet back in 2008 while Lauren is working as a waitress at a local club. The storyline is told from first person POV (Lauren) and follows three separate timelines that eventually meet in 2013.

The premise follows Lauren and Cal’s relationship from their first meeting through courtship, romance, love and marriage, and during the ensuing years Cal’s mysterious work commitments and disappearances take their toll on his young wife and their marriage. He is secretive about the actual work he does for his best friends’s father’s company-the long hours, the travel and the available perks. Lauren lives in luxury wanting nothing but her husband whose frequent disappearances have resulted in a shrew of a woman in Lauren.

Lauren’s character is not reflected in a positive way. We are introduced to a young woman who is more of an old shrew than a happy wife but then again, we meet her at a time in her life when everything has fallen apart. She is a difficult character to like.

Cal is an enigma. We know very little about the man, only as much as the narrator (Lauren) has told us, and in this, is the conundrum. Lauren, herself, knows very little about the man to whom she has married. The only constant is his professing undying love for Lauren, and his best friend Dex (and wife Helen). Cal has a secret that will destroy everything he has with Lauren and more.

The relationship between Lauren and Cal is filled with sensual love, sex (mostly implied) and mystery. Cal is a man so in love with his wife he will do almost anything to keep her happy-almost. In this, he is a man who disappears on numerous occasions with no explanation or cause.

The secondary characters are numerous and play an integral part in the story when Cal disappears from Lauren’s life. There is a definite story behind Cal’s best friend Dex and it is one I would like to see brought to life in another storyline.

IF I BREAK is an interesting and suspense filled, albeit slow to build, storyline with a twist of epic proportions. I was in the ball park about the reveal but in the wrong section-close but not quite close enough. The presentation and execution of the story is a little awkward especially with the continual bouncing between three time lines and some important information seems to have been lost in the telling (or was kept from the reader on purpose i.e. Steve’s involvement and introduction).

IF I BREAK is the first instalment in Portia Moore’s new adult series. The storyline is open ended and there is so much more to tell. I am hoping for a happily ever after but I am not sure how Portia will be able rectify Cal’s secret to keep everyone in the storyline, and the reader, happy.

Matthew Todd-Interview with the Cover Model

Matthew Todd-Interview with the Cover Model

August 3, 2014 marks the release of KM Scott’s new Club X series and we would like to introduce to you the cover model for book one TEMPTATION -Matthew Todd

Temptation July 14TRC: Hi Matthew and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the recent cover of KM Scott’s –Club X-TEMPTATION.

Matthew: Thank you! Happy to be here!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Matthew on:  Facebook

Matthew: I’m 29, live in North Carolina, born and raised in New York though. I was a firefighter for 8 years, before starting my own company. On my off time I love to take out the motorcycle, and spend time with my wife and son.

TRC: What were your goals and aspirations growing up?

Matthew: Honestly? I always wanted to be a dad. There was just something about being a dad that I couldn’t wait for. And now that I am one, I love every second of it. I also knew I wanted to help people, hence joining the fire department at a young age.

TRC: Will you please tell us about how you got started in the modeling/cover modeling business?

Matthew: My wife is the owner of Cover Me, Darling, and out of the blue said she needed a favor… She asked me to model for a shoot, and the rest just took off from there.

Follow Cover Me, Darling on Facebook and Twitter

TRC: What was your first ‘published’ cover and by whom?

Matthew Todd 7Matthew: The first book that I actually got to hold in my hand was Strip Me Bare by Marissa Carmel. I believe that was the first one to be printed too.

TRC: Do you know how many covers on which your image has appeared?

Matthew: I think its around 6 or 7? Maybe?

TRC: At times, there has been a ‘stigma’ surrounding the male model and the romance-cover industry. What is your opinion about the recent popularity of the romance/paranormal storyline and the very busy industry of the romance cover model? IN other words, do you believe the cover images help sell the books?

Matthew Todd 1Matthew: Absolutely. I 100% believe that they help sell the books. If I’m looking to read a book, I’m going to go for one that has a cover that draws me in.

TRC: Have you ever had a photo shoot that went completely wrong?

Matthew: Every single one of them hahaha. It really doesn’t go wrong, it’s just that I joke around a lot and make the photographer (…wife) annoyed. I make a ton of ridiculous faces. So it’s not that it goes wrong, it’s that I go wrong I guess. lol

TRC: Where was the most exotic setting you have had the opportunity to work and model?

Matthew: I mostly do local shoots, so I haven’t gone anywhere too exotic for shoots yet. Hopefully I will someday, maybe Hawaii haha.

TRC: Nudity in modeling or acting can be controversial. Some pictures can cross the line between sexuality and pornography. What would you tell young models just entering the business about nude modeling?

Matthew Todd 2Matthew: If you’re comfortable with it, then go for it. Just make sure you are working with a professional, and don’t go beyond what you are okay with.

TRC: Whom do you most admire and why?

Matthew: Every firefighter that puts their life on the line to save someone elses.

TRC: What is your most embarrassing moment?

Matthew: I walked into a storm door the other day while I was working.. like a bird.. right in my face. That was pretty embarrassing.

TRC: When you are not modeling what can we find you doing-in other words-what is your ‘day job’? 😉

Matthew: I own a Home Theater Installation and IT company. So most likely, I’m on a job, scheduling a job, or doing an estimate to get a job. … or in the pool with my son ☺

TRC: What three (3) things would you like to accomplish in the next ten (10) years?

Matthew Todd coverMatthew: As an avid skydiver, I want to do a halo jump. I want to keep growing my company. And I also want to go to Antigua, it’s a long overdue trip for me and my wife.

TRC: What is something that few people (if any) know about you?

Matthew: I cry watching The Land Before Time… shh.

TRC: Would you please tell us what you do to relax?

Matthew: At this point in my life? I don’t know what “relax” means anymore. But the beach is always nice…

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Matthew: It’s a highly classified secret 😉

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Matthew: Yes! I will be at the Southern Girls Author Event, July 19th, in North Carolina. I’ll be sitting with Marissa Carmel. So come say hi!!!

My Hunger

RELEASE DATE: July 7, 2014

An Inside Out Novella in Mark’s POV

While Chris and Sara have traveled to Paris to avoid the chaos of press and police after the tragic night we’d shared, I have stayed to face the reality of what has happened. But there is no peace to be found in facing the truth, and no truth to be found in the confessions that have been made and retracted. I am a Master, all about control, and yet right now, facing great tragedy, I feel as if I have none. With my club and my relationships of the past in the spotlight, I find sanctuary in the one place I’ve promised I will never be again, but cannot seem to resist. Her arms.

***Mark and Crystal’s story begins in the novella Master Undone.**

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: MY HUNGER is the latest novella in Lisa Renee Jones’s contemporary, erotic adult Inside Out series. This is the continuing story of Master Mark Compton whose life is beginning to unravel with the death of his beloved submissive at the hands of a wanna-be and one time friend.

The novella focuses on Mark’s need for control. As the events in his life begin to spiral downward Mark focuses on his mother’s assistant Crystal Smith-a woman who is willing to give Mark what he wants-but definitely not the type to submit to all of his needs. While Chris and Sara continue to remain in Paris, Mark is pulled into the investigation of Rebecca’s death and the fall out for the gallery, the club and his life.

Lisa Renee Jones pulls the reader into an intense and dramatic storyline where one man must face the possibility of losing everything that means something in his life. From his mother’s illness to the death of Rebecca, Mark’s life takes a profound turn when events of the past begin to catch up. The BDSM lifestyle is darker and more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.

Eden is said to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her face has graced countless magazines and her body has sold millions of dollars of clothing. But her fame and beauty has earned her more than she ever imagined. Evil is stalking her, determined to extinguish the ethereal beauty forever.

Swanson or “Swanny” as his teammates call him is always up for the next mission. He came back from Afghanistan wounded and scarred. Hardly the kind of man who even belongs in the same room with Eden. And yet there’s something about the quiet beauty that stirs his blood and makes him dream of the impossible. Because Beauty loving the beast only happens in fairy tales and KGI doesn’t deal in fairy tales. Ever.

Review:

Eden has a great life, great family and a great job. But, when a seemingly random attack comes, things for Eden start to change very quickly. She knows her dad is retired military, but had no idea the depths of things that he had been involved in, and that’s just how dear old dad wanted to keep it. However, once he learns of the attack, he calls in her brothers and tells them of his past and that he thinks Eden is in danger because of it. One of Eden’s brothers knows the Kelly’s and puts in a call to ask for help in protecting Eden. One problem with the plan? Eden has no idea why all of this is happening and why in the world she would need a team of security?

Once the KGI team meets with Eden and lays out what’s going to happen, she can’t help but find herself drawn to the scarred Swanny. It literally makes her heart melt that he keeps his eyes averted and the scarred side of his face turned away. Once everyone agrees as to how they will proceed to her next shoot, she settles down a bit. After all, what can happen with a group of hot ex-military guys and one of the most beautiful women in the world, who just happens to be drawn to one in particular? And, when Eden’s life and beauty is threatened, literally, Swanny and his team will move heaven and earth to get to her in time. And, I will tell you, everyone on Swanny’s team, and Eden herself, are not prepared for what happens…………………

Oh, how I love the men, and women, of KGI. I’ve been looking forward to Swanny’s story for some time, as I’m sure a lot of Banks’s readers have. Just the utter horror of what he went through when he was held hostage in Afghanistan immediately made him a fan favorite. I knew Eden would be different from the beginning, although, I do wish she had been a bit more forceful at times, but totally understand why Banks wrote her the way she did. After what Swanny had endured, he needed someone like her to prove that people are beautiful on the inside as well. Even though we, of course, have a happy ending, the trials they go through to get there will make you cringe. Not that the whole book is that intense. We get to see all of the Kelly boys and several of the other team members, which is always a plus. And, I for one, can’t wait for the next!! Well done, Maya Banks, very well done.

About the book: Release Date July 7, 2014

Robotics engineer Jenny Nguyen has given up on finding Mr. Right. So when her brother and his husband approach her to act as surrogate for their child, she sees it as her only chance to have a child and accepts. One week after she initiates the process, however, she meets a man who gets her heart pumping for all the right reasons and gives into the temptation. When the test turns positive, she’s believes she can’t handle both the pregnancy and dating, but she underestimates how persistent a Daniel Kelly can be.

When surgeon and gamer-geek Dan meets a pretty woman dressed as a Sailor Scout at Comic-Con, a roll of his lucky 20-sided die tells him he should take a gamble on her. One night of passion leaves him longing for more, but Jenny’s refusal to return his calls afterward leaves him wondering if the attraction was one-sided. An accidental discovery of her pregnancy has him convinced the baby is his, and he’ll stop at nothing to win her heart.

Review:

As I said in my previous Kelly Brothers review, Crista McHugh is a goddess. Once again, she grabs you from the very beginning and leaves you begging for more. Jenny thinks she has everything figured out, and them BAM!!! Literally! LOL!!! Neither of them know how much their lives are about to change when they collide in a bar and he spills her drink on her. They have a seat at the bar and quickly discover they have a lot in common. I mean, come on………..They are at Comic-Con for cripes sake!! But, once they share a night of passion, and Jenny runs out of the room as soon as she can, Dan Kelly can’t get her out of his mind, and little does he know, Jenny is having the same problem. And, once they run into each other again, totally by chance, Jenny is determined to NOT be affected by him. Problem with that? Dan is just as determined for her to BE affected, because the good Lord knows that he is just as affected now as he was that night. When he finally gets her alone, they both realize the spark is still there, as is their insane attraction to each other. So, why does she keep running? And, just how is Dan going to win her over? Slow and easy………………….. =)

I absolutely loved this installment of The Kelly Brothers. How McHugh keeps doing it, I have no idea, but I’m certainly glad she does. Dan and Jenny are both great characters, and the geek references, and there were plenty, made me laugh out loud. Throw in Jenny’s controlling Vietnamese family, namely her mother who thinks Jenny should have already married, and it’s one thing after another. There are a few misunderstandings with Dan and his family, which leads to a little dissention, but once Dan figures out the truth, his family is there for him in a big way. We get to see some of the other Kellys and find out what’s up with a few of them, which was awesome. I’ll tell you once again, if you’re not reading Crista McHugh, you’re seriously missing out. And, I have a feeling that the next book, Ethan’s book, just may be my fave and all I’ve read is a snippet!! Well done, Crista McHugh, very very well done!!!

Description:
For Samantha Henry, it took a ten-year absence to appreciate the close-knit New England town with an appeal all its own….

After a perfect storm of events leaves Sam high, dry, and jobless, she has to head home to Harvest Cove to regroup. Growing up, she was the town misfit, and a brief high school romance that resulted in heartbreak made her realize she was never going to fit in. But now with the support of her mother and an unexpected circle of allies, Sam starts to wonder if she’s misjudged the town all these years.

Life’s been good to Jake Smith. He transitioned from popular jock to town veterinarian without any trouble. But Sam’s homecoming makes him question his choices. The sharp-tongued beauty was never a good fit for the small community, but he’s never forgotten her—or how good they were together. While she makes it clear she’s not about to repeat the past, Jake’s determined to convince her to give him—and Harvest Cove—a second chance.

Review:

For the Longest Time by Kendra Leigh Castle is the first book in her new Harvest Cove series. Sam Henry is our heroine, and as the story begins, she is driving back home to Harvest Cove, after being away for 10 years. Sam laments how everything in New York that was on its way to a promising career as an artist, falls apart, and her roommate leaves her alone. Sam does what she has to do, go back home to regroup financially. But Sam dreads going back home, since she has only been back for family affairs a few times over the years. She left as a teenager, after graduation, having suffered a heartbreak and humiliation. Sam being artist, even in her teenage years was considered a “freak”, and treated like an outcast. The High School “clique” (in-crowd) did not like her artistry clothes or hair (many colors), so she was ridiculed often for being different.

Jake Smith was the high school jock, who was a member of the “clique”. Sam had a private crush on Jake, who noticed Sam and ended up dating her a few times. Only to feel the pressure from his peers, eventually dumping her.

Now all these years later, he runs into Sam as she arrives at her mom’s house. She ends up helping him pick up some stray cats. Sam learns quickly that her childhood crush is now the town’s veterinarian, and he is even hotter than he was in his school days. But Sam is leery, and wants nothing to do with Jake, who already is eying the beautiful and grown up, Sam.

What follows is a sweet romance that builds despite what happened in the past. Sam is now stronger, with a backbone to stand up for herself. She isn’t totally confident to face Jake’s friends, who made her life a living hell, and who are still in this day, very much the same ignorant group. This is somewhat of a lesson on prejudice and how it can affect the lives of others.

Sam, despite her determination not to get involved, does find herself falling for Jake, and having his dog, Tucker and the kittens around doesn’t hurt. They are adorable. Jake is truly a nice guy, and a hunk. He knows what he did as a teenager was wrong and is bent on proving himself to Sam that he is not the boy she knew. I loved their relationship. Watching their romance grow, as each began to trust each other more, and open up. Will Jake stay with Sam, or fall once again to his friends prejudices? Will Sam be able to resume her artist career?

This was a really nice story, with a lot of humor and fun. Sam and Jake made a nice couple that we rooted for pretty early on. Some of the secondary characters, were very nice, and since this series will continue, I look forward to learning more about them. I also adored Loki (Sam’s kitten), and Tucker (Jake’s lovable dog). I totally recommend reading For The Longest Time, as it was a fun, humorous read, with a great couple, cute animals, and with a serious subject in the background.

Interview
Hi Kendra. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Kendra: Thanks for having me here today! Hmm, about me…I’m 37, a Navy wife from Northern New York who has now lived all over the country. I’ve been writing professionally since 2007, which is when I sold my first book, and For the Longest Time is my first contemporary romance. Up until now, it’s been all paranormal, which was a lot of fun…but I was ready to try something new! I drink a lot of coffee, love animals (we have two Newfoundland dogs and a big Siberian cat), and have three kids. I spend a lot of time running around with my hair on fire.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Kendra: Always. I was a bookworm by the time I was three, an early and voracious reader. The writing stemmed naturally from that. I wrote a lot of bad poetry as a kid, and I actually remember one really, really awful attempt at a romantic vampire story when I was maybe ten or eleven. Fortunately, both my skills and my ideas improved!

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Kendra: Staying on track and pushing through the days when I don’t seem to have anything to say is probably my biggest challenge. Sometimes the words flow better than others, and sometimes every word is a struggle. It’s amazing how long it can take to write three pages when your brain is in “I’m tired and I don’t wanna” mode. That’s the worst for me!

TRC: For the Longest Time is the first book in your Harvest Cove series. How did you come up with the idea for this series?

Kendra: That was the easy part, really…I love small town settings in books, maybe because I grew up in one. When I knew I was going to try to write a contemporary, creating a small New England town to set it in was a given for me, and I really enjoyed doing it. The town is the heart of the series, and I hope readers see it as a sort of character in its own right.

TRC: Can you tell us the premise of Harvest Cove, and how many books do you have planned?

Kendra: The series is about a bunch of interconnected people who call Harvest Cove, Massachusetts home. I’m working on the third book right now, and I’d love to just keep writing them…I don’t have an end point in mind right now. I know the Cove has a lot more stories for me to tell!

For The Longest TimeTRC: Would you please give us a brief description of For the Longest Time?

Kendra: Sure! For the Longest Time is a story about second chances, complete with a charming misfit unwillingly returning home, the handsome veterinarian who broke her heart, and an adorable kitten who unwittingly brings them back together. When artist Sam Henry loses her job and her inspiration, she doesn’t have much of a choice but to return home to Harvest Cove, the town where she never fit in…and she has the emotional scars to prove it. The last person she wants to see is Jake Smith, the popular jock turned town veterinarian, but thanks to a litter of orphaned kittens underneath her mother’s porch, he’s one of the first people she encounters. Sam has come a long way from the shy, bullied girl who unwisely trusted Jake with her heart, and no matter how hot the sparks still flying between them are, she’s determined not to repeat the mistakes of her past. But Jake has grown up too, harboring his own regrets. And he’s determined to show Sam that sometimes, a first love deserves a second chance.

TRC: You write both contemporary romance & paranormal romance. Do you have a preference? Have you ever thought about writing in another genre?

Kendra: No preference. When I first started writing, I couldn’t imagine doing anything but paranormal romance. As time went on, though, and the market changed, I started to feel like I should try to stretch myself a bit and see what else I could do. As I said, I’ve always found small town settings appealing, so I decided to try a small town contemporary…and I loved it! I’m naturally inclined to throw a lot of humor into my stories, and that’s always been something I’ve had to rein in when writing darker paranormals. Now, though, I can just write funny and sweet, and it’s really, really comfortable for me. Both subgenres are great fun to write in, and it’s nice to be able to do both. As far as writing in a completely different genre, the only one I might consider is fantasy, but I’m too busy to even think about really giving it a go right now!

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Kendra: I’m writing the third book in the Harvest Cove series, Zoe’s story. She’s a character I really loved writing in For the Longest Time, and she definitely deserves her own happily ever after!

TRC: What is your writing process? Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Kendra: I have three kids with their own interesting schedules, and I’m the official chauffeur, so…I try to write when they’re all in school. But mostly I just squeeze it in whenever I have time during the day. I do have a couple of comfy chairs I head for with my laptop, though. And I need it to be quiet, because I’m easily distracted. That’s why one of my comfy chairs is in my bedroom, out of the way of my noisy crew!

TRC: Many authors have friends or family, that they bounce ideas and information back and forth. Do you have anyone you like to discuss your stories with?

Kendra: If I get stuck, I’ll bounce things off of my mom. She’s an excellent sounding board. My editor, too, has proven to be excellent at spitballing ideas with me. Beyond that, though, I’m a pretty quiet, solitary writer. I don’t tend to like to show things off until I’ve really fleshed them out and finished them.

TRC: What books, authors or people in your life have influenced your writing?

Kendra: The romance authors who’ve most influenced me are the ones I grew up reading—Johanna Lindsey, Julie Garwood, and Nora Roberts are the big ones. There’s a warmth and intimacy to their writing that I’m always striving for with my own. Outside of romance, Stephen King, for his amazing way with characters, and Neil Gaiman, for his gorgeous prose.

TRC: When you are not writing, what other interests or hobbies do you have?

Kendra: I like to read and play video games to unwind. I used to sing, as well…I sang tenor in a barbershop quartet and chorus, and I sang in a church choir. That’s something I’ve always loved to do, and something I’d love to get back into one of these days (did I mention my children keep me super busy right now?).

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kendra: I’ve got nothing to add except to thank you again for having me here today! For the Longest Time is a book I’m very proud of—I really hope readers enjoy this first trip to Harvest Cove!
