ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 18, 2014

On leave from the FBI, Special Agent Jason Spark is enjoying some welcome peace and quiet when he’s called on to help the local sheriff’s department check out a 911 call. Expecting a prank or misdial, he unwittingly steps into a horrifying bloodbath straight out of a Hollywood slasher movie, complete with clues scrawled on the wall.

Nikki Hart’s husband and son are killed, but she survives, badly beaten and barely clinging to life in a coma. When she awakens, she doesn’t know her name, recognize her face, or remember anything about herself and her past. Terrified, and unsure of whom to trust, she clings to the memory of the angel who comforted her in her darkest moments.

The investigation turns up a prime suspect: The Butcher, an elusive hired assassin for the Sicilian mob. As the news of Nikki’s recovery spreads, putting her in this ruthless killer’s sights again, Jason will do whatever it takes to protect the woman he’s learning to love.

Nikki’s beginning to believe Jason might be the angel who protected her in her dreams. But when she learns about the secret role he played in the worst day of her life, can she ever forgive him?

••••••••••••••••••••••••

Move over Alfred Hitchcock, this wonderful suspense/romance is a must read if you love action and romance all in an incredibly well written bundle! If I could rate this truly…this would be off my scale!

This magnificent story had FBI Special Agent Jason Spark helping out his brother (the sheriff of the little town of Larosa) while he and his new wife were on their honeymoon. Dispatcher and everyone thinking the 911 call was a prank or “butt dial” was normal, his brother had responded to at least a dozen of them that month, and nothing bad ever happens in the sleepy little town of Larosa…. NOT!

He finds a scene of grim murder and so much more…then finds the woman on the floor is not quite dead. I’m not doing spoilers; this is just too magnificent a tale to miss.

Suzanne Matthews has written some really great books, I loved In Plain Sight and Just for the Weekend. Both were wonderful stories, but this a completely different step up in levels. I actually feel this may be better than a Hitchcock …as it has much more romance and an HEA, which, for me, makes it that much better. However, the twists and crimes within crimes of this marvelously written tale is breath taking!

The hero is a compelling and yet very human, real guy. The victim a wonderful woman with so much to face it’s …ahhh. The attraction as he tries to protect her and her daughter from the monsters is the stuff dreams are made of! OOPS…I said no more spoilers!

It took a bit more than my favorite wine this time, something a little stronger to keep me from chewing what’s left of my “after gardening” nails off. You won’t want to put this down so try to have a “no interruption” period. But if you have to…ok, just do yourself a solid and read it!

Enjoy everyone, I certainly did – you won’t be able to help yourself!

Review

Restless Spirits is my second book by Kathy Bryson, and I have to say, I loved it.

It was good to catch up with old characters.  It basically starts where the last book ends.

Marliee is a bit accident prone, but she’s a great character. I will admit to not being a fan of Marilee’s in the first book, but reading her book, I grew to like her more.

Not sure about the relationship with her mother, but as the story goes along it gets better. You see why they have an antagonistic relationship in the beginning. The incident where she almost runs her new boss was funny.

And from there on, its a roller coaster of a ride, as Marilee begins a new career in a (haunted) B&B.  It was a little slow in places, but well worth persevering. As always attention to detail is important and the characters who come to life on the page.

John Smith is a great character. He seemed to be a perfect balance for Marilee. He is calm to her chaotic.  Their working relationship soon turns into romance. And their first kiss was a lot of fun to read.

It’s a great read, with mystery and a few ghosts thrown in.  A great afternoon read 🙂

How Far Would You Go, Especially For A Good Man?

Thank you so much for having me at The Reading Cafe today. There is nothing I love better than a good book and a nice, hot cup of something warm, even where I live in hot and sticky Florida!

We all have little indulgences and they usually don’t do us any harm. But in my latest book, Restless Spirits, Marilee Harper indulges in a cigarette and accidentally sets fire to her best friend’s house. Oops! Since her friend is a wealthy woman and the darling of the bank and town where Marilee works, this presents a problem.

When you go too far, the only thing you can do is change direction. So Marilee takes a job managing a B&B. The building once housed a hospital for the terminally ill, and now it shows all the signs of a classic haunting. But if ghosts weren’t enough, Marilee also has the challenge of working with her difficult mother, a cook who channels Elvis, and contractors who act like paparazzi!

Marilee’s character was so much fun to explore. How does a modern, competent, professional – well, except for that one little arson incident – deal with the supernatural? Marilee’s usual practical directness doesn’t always succeed! What was more difficult to write were some of the customer service scenes. Like Marilee, I may have gone too far on the phone once or twice.

The real challenge for Marilee, however, turns out to be her boss. He’s cute, charming, compassionate, and crossing a line. Would you date your boss or is that going too far? What if, as Marilee discovers, it’s not just a case of lust, but of true compatibility, even love? John makes her happy, believes in her, and helps her manage all the mysterious occurrences that persist at the B&B.

Then the haunting goes too far and John goes missing, taken captive to the Otherworld. Which leads me to the question of the day – how far would you go for a good man? Maybe I’m just an incurable romantic, but I’ve always been drawn to the story of the lover who defies death. From the Greek Orpheus to the Celtic Tam Lin, there’s always been that one person who crosses over to the land of the dead to reclaim his or her love, challenging even the gods.

Both my books, Feeling Lucky and Restless Spirits, share the same background in fairy folklore though each can be read independently. Shakespeare may have brought a long-standing feud to light in 1590-something with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but it’s heating up in the modern-day Midwest. As if the ladies of Fayetteville didn’t have enough to manage with jobs and family, they also have to deal with fairies squabbling over a practical joke about falling in love with a donkey? Talk about going too far!

As for Marilee – oh she’s headed off to the Otherworld, armed with a short temper and a cast iron frying pan. Hmm, this may not end well!

The talents of legendary marksman Gregor “Arrow” MacGregor are crucial now, as Bruce moves to reclaim his Scottish holdings. REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Well … she did it again. Another fabo book in Monica McCarty’s Highland Guard series. If you are a highlander historical romance fan this series a MUST READ. Monica weaves in real historical facts and characters into her stories and if you are a history lover like I am, you will appreciate how that can make a book really come to life in your mind. She is a very descriptive writer as well, never leaving you to question what you are seeing in your mind while reading. Many authors at this point in a series (this is the 9th book) tend to go off track, or take a series in weird places hoping to keep their reader captivated .. well there is no need to try anything like that with this series. The backdrop for her story lines keep the momentum going and she always matches her lead characters perfectly. No gimmicks or tricks, just pure old fashion romance/wit with a side of action. PERFECT BLEND! 🙂

Gregor “Arrow” MacGregor is one of Robert the Bruce’s famed Highland Phantom Guard Warriors. Exceptionally handsome (he is always getting digs at his male beauty), trained as a brutally accurate bow and arrow marksman, strong and loyal, Gregor finds himself in a rut of sorts and is ordered back to his own personal castle after a botched mission. He is to rest, relax, indulge and push his reset button. Well little does he know that his reset button is NOT the only button that about to get pushed.

Many years ago, Gregor came upon a wee lass at the bottom of a drained well. Seeing as she is clearly traumatized, he decides to take guardianship over her and sends her to his castle. Now, the wee lass is no longer .. wee! Cate has bloomed into a beautiful young woman and is fierce despite her size. She is well trained to defend herself and has taken to mothering orphans. She is also madly in love with Gregor and is hoping he will now see her as a woman.

Gregor certainly sees the woman inside and tries all he can to fight it. Cate is a wise woman who knows what she wants, and she goes after it with no regret. Secrets are being kept on both sides however that may change the course of their relationship. Menacing and scheming parties also add turmoil to the mix setting our couple up to fail. Well brutal truth is served on a big ole platter and watching how it is dealt with is a whole lot of fun …LOL

Revenge, love, lies, lust, sweet, erotic, disgust, action, history .. these are just a handful of words that describe this book. It is in the readers best interest to read this series in order. I suppose you could read it out of order but there is so much you will miss if you did! Again, one of the BEST highlander historical series out there and another direct hit by Monica McCarty. Can’t wait for the next one!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Summer’s Moon
Sweetland series – Book #3
by Lacey Baker
Release Date: August 26, 2014

Summer's MoonAmazon / Barnes &I Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Parker Cantrell is not the most joyful guy around. After years of being a homicide detective in Boston, he’s seen too many bad things to believe in happy endings. So when Parker has to return to his small hometown to care for the puppy his grandmother left him, he’s looking forward to having some time to rest and relax. That is, until he bumps into Drew. She’s always gotten him hot and bothered, and unless Parker can find a way to avoid her, there’s no way he’ll be able to relax. Or get any rest…

Drew Sydney has had the biggest crush on Parker for as long as she can remember. Now that he’s back in town, the attraction between them is impossible to ignore. Drew knows she should stay away from Parker—if he can bolt after the best night of their lives together, he’s clearly not cut out to be anything real in her life. The problem is that their one night stand didn’t just rock Drew’s world…she’s also pregnant with Parker’s baby.

Both of their lives have just been turned upside down. Parker wants to do the right thing, but Drew isn’t interested in any shotgun weddings. So if Mr. “I’ve Seen It All” Parker wants the woman he can’t seem to forget, he’s going to have to win her heart all over again…

Review:
Summer’s Moon by Lacey Baker is the 3rd book in her Sweetland series. I have not read Lacey Baker before, and after reading this book, I am adding her to my list of authors I want to read. Summer’s Moon is a sweet romance, in a small town, with fantastic characters and a little bit of suspense. This book can be read easily as a standalone, but since I enjoyed this so much, I plan to read the two earlier books.

Drew Sydney is our heroine, who runs her own flower shop in Sweetland. Drew and her mother came to Sweetland years before, to leave behind the stigma of false rumors. Drew has always had a crush on Parker Cantrell, who has just come home for a short stay, due to his grandmother’s funeral.

Parker is our hero, and he is known to be a womanizer. Of his family, he is the one who has no intention to become seriously involved in any relationship, nor to stay in Sweetland. Parker is a detective in Boston, and his plans to stay for a short period changes after he is suspended for working on a case he was not assigned to. One night, while both are drunk, Parker and Drew have sex, and now Drew is pregnant.

What follows is a wonderful romance, where neither want any type of commitment and try at first to avoid each other. Once Drew is forced to tell Parker about the baby, he begins to change, though not wanting anything more then to help take care of the baby. But in time, his feelings for Drew become stronger, not to mention that he always ends up at Drew’s house to find his puppy, who always escapes and runs to Drew. Nice plan by Rufus. Lol

Parker comes from a big family, as the Cantrells own a B & B left to them by their grandmother, as well as each family member inherits a puppy. Rufus is Parker’s. It is Parker who finds himself falling in love with Drew, but he worries about the case in Boston, which seems to have followed him to Sweetland; putting those close to him in danger. He is such a great hero, as he is so sweet how he watches over Drew, and helps her stand up to her past, which also comes to follow her to Sweetland. I adored Parker and his entire family. The Cantrell’s are great. I can’t wait to read more of their stories.

Lacey Beckett has created a delightful story that has everything you would want in a romance. Parker and Drew are a great couple, and their romance was such a wonderful love story in the making. The small town atmosphere was great, with the Cantrell family, the gossipers, and the snobs. With all of this, there was some suspense that gave us an exciting climax. You can’t go wrong reading Summer’s Moon, as Lacey Beckett has won me over to read more of her books.

Naughty Bits Vol 1-4 by Joey W. Hill-a review

Naughty Bits Vol 1-4 by Joey W. Hill-a review

Naughty Bits Series

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW! This series is pretty fracken good. I love it when you discover a new author, love their style and can’t wait for more. This is exactly how I feel about The Naughty Bits Series by Joey W. Hill. These four books are all just over 100 pages each, are completely captivating, curl the toes and really see a beautiful approach to the BDSM lifestyle. There is explicit sex and elements of BDSM that may be uncomfortable for some readers, but if you enjoy this kind of genre then you should really check these books out!

Before getting into the reviews (seeing as the books are short, my review for each will be also, and I don’t want to repeat the same thing over and over but rather highlight certain aspects) I want to set the storyline for you. Madison (our leading lady) is a whole bag of complicated that has recently lost her sister and inherited her lingerie store that caters to the sexually adventurous. Leaving Madison with a letter, Alice (her sister) goes on to explain why she left her the store and what she wishes for her future. She reveals that she believes Madison is a true submissive (despite her control freak ways) and asks her to please explore this side of herself. Alice has even gone so far as to prepare her best friend Logan (the hottie that owns the hardware store next door and a dominant) to take Madison under his wing. Alice is one smart cookie knowing deep down that if these two get together, they have the makings for the perfect Dom/Sub relationship .. one that include a life long love! 🙂

Madison is a control freak with one wish—to lose control. Her hidden submissive cravings have led to a string of disastrous relationships. So when she inherits her sister’s North Carolina lingerie shop, Naughty Bits, she jumps at the opportunity to dump her boring finance career and bad history and try her luck down South.

But before Madison can settle in, she catches the attention of the owner of the neighboring hardware store. Sexually dominant Logan Scott can see the hunger for command in Madison’s eyes and is anxious to help unleash her submissive desires. He presents her with three very tempting gifts—handcuffs, erotic cards, and an open invitation to join him at a submissive’s training session.

Faced with the realization that she can’t sell fantasies to her lingerie customers without embracing her own, Madison accepts Logan’s offer. Now, she’s about to discover just how far her desire can take her…

REVIEW

After reading the letter left by her sister, Madison is conflicted as to whether she should sell the store or fulfill her sisters dying request to keep it open. After meeting Logan, Madison is taken a back by this brutally honest man who will not put up with her sarcastic, spiteful ways. Logan goes on to explain the BDSM lifestyle in immense detail knowing that Madison is letting her past and fear hold her back. Madison is intrigued and comes to realize that if she is open to this lifestyle, she can help her customers be open as well. Deciding to keep the store, her journey to self discovery begins.

BOOK 2 – The Training Session

Amazon.com / / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

DESCRIPTION

Fear is no match for lust in Joey W. Hill’s sexy new novella about a woman who sheds her shame to embrace her pleasure…

Madison may have ditched her well-ordered Boston life to run Naughty Bits, her sister’s North Carolina lingerie shop, but she didn’t expect to throw herself into such chaos—or to become intimate with the sexiest man she’s ever had the pleasure of meeting. After spending a night observing a submissive’s training session, Madison is ready for Logan to teach her how to feed her own deep fantasies—and get rid of all her lingering fears…

Madison’s aching desire to submit is unlike anything Logan’s ever experienced before, and he’s determined to be the man to make her relinquish control. Still, Logan’s unsure if Madison is ready to take that first step to becoming his—until she shows up at his door ready to be commanded. Luckily for them both, Logan’s got more than a few surprises up his sleeve that he knows she’ll enjoy…

REVIEW

Madison decides to accept Logan’s offer to stand in and watch a training session he is conducting with another submissive. When asked to participate in this session, Madison hesitantly agrees. This is a defining moment for her and once it’s complete she makes the decision to explore this darker side of herself with Logan. After a very yummy movie night (my goodness, I was a puddle after that), Logan seems to have pushed all the right buttons. Her experiences so far have had a huge impact and she projects this confidence onto her customers.

BOOK 3 – Bound to Please

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

DESCRIPTION

Thanks to her new Dom’s exquisitely special set of skills, Madison is discovering how delicious it can be to lose control. Logan is committed to awakening Madison’s long buried desires, and after he shows her the depths of ecstasy they can reach with a little bit of roleplay, he’s ready to take her to the next level.

But when Madison’s old fears resurface, Logan grows wary of pushing her too far too fast. He can sense just how deeply she longs for release from past regrets, but what surprises him the most is the intense yearning his innocent new sub is awakening in him. Now Logan must decide to what lengths he’ll go to convince Madison to give herself over completely…

REVIEW

Madison really lays it all on the table in this book. This is the moment where the light bulb goes off in her head and she comes to realize she really is a submissive. Completely immersing herself in the lifestyle, we experience different scenes and exploration with her. Logan also comes on strong as a dominant, forcing Madison to reveal personal truths and pain that is deeply seated. Knowing he is falling in love with her and wants a future, he is willing to do all he can to get through ALL her barriers.

BOOK 4 – The Highest Bid

Amazon.com / / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

DESCRIPTION

To understand her customers’ desires at her lingerie store, Naughty Bits, Madison has been exploring her own deep yearnings with the help of neighboring store owner—and oh-so-sexy Dominant—Logan. After overcoming her fears and allowing herself to truly submit, Madison is ready for her ultimate sexual adventure: an auction where she’ll be offered up to the highest bidding Master.

But when her fantasy brings her face-to-face with her true feelings for Logan, she’ll have to figure out if she’s ready to trust her heart as well as her body to him forever…

REVIEW

A very dramatic conclusion that closes this series off perfectly. Logan is going to provide Madison with her ultimate fantasy (it’s a hot one) no matter the cost. During the fantasy, all Madison has held back and deflected comes to the surface under Logan’s dominant hand. She faces personal truths, releases her inner demons and accepts that being a submissive isn’t just about handing over control, but being handed the power. A true HEA!

I really hope that these kind of relationships exist in real life because it is truely beautiful. Logan and Madison are so well matched and believable. I also adore the secondary couple in this series where the role of dominant is female and the submissive is male. I really wish there was more of Alice because she is the hero of this story in my opinion. What a beautiful soul she was to pave a future for her loved ones before she left this earth. If you are looking for a beautiful BDSM story then go snag this series. I have no doubt you will enjoy it as much as I did!

HAPPY READING!

It’s In His Kiss
Lucky Harbor series – Book #10
by Jill Shalvis
Release Date: August 26, 2014

It's In His Kiss

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
ONE KISS CAN LAST FOREVER

Becca Thorpe has uprooted her life and escaped to the beach. Now’s her chance to get away from city living, throw caution to the ocean winds, and live in the moment. Especially if the moment includes the deliciously sexy surfer she meets shortly after arriving in Lucky Harbor. Something about the dark intensity of Sam’s eyes and the thrill she gets at his touch convinces her to stay awhile.

Boatbuilder and investment genius Sam Brody is a self-made man who knows how dangerous it can be to mix business and pleasure. But he can’t resist offering Becca a job just to hear her laugh and have her near. Yet when her brother comes to town asking for help, will he tempt her back to her glamorous life in the city? Or do Sam and little Lucky Harbor have a chance to win Becca’s heart?

Review:

It’s In His Kiss by Jill Shalvis is the 10th book in her Lucky Harbor series. I have read a few Jill Shalvis books, and everytime I read one of her books, she totally pulls me into the story and her fabulous characters. After finishing It’s In His Kiss, I doubt very much that I will miss anymore Jill Shalvis books. If you want lighthearted romances, with true life situations, wonderful couples, great supporting characters, and in some of her books, cute animals, then look no further then Jill Shalvis.

Becca Thorpe is our heroine, and was a fantastic one at that. This is romance at its best, and Becca was perfect. She comes to Lucky Harbor having run away from the stress of her life and her family. All she wants to do is live for today, and enjoy herself. She ends up in a run down warehouse, and the only think nice about it, is the eye candy that she can see out her window by the waterfront.

Sam Brody and his two best friends, Cole and Tanner run a successful boat charter business. All three are hot hot hot. But Becca only has eyes for Sam, who is truly the brains behind the business. He spots the nosy Becca right away, and keeps an eye on her.

The guys are too busy taking clients out, and they need an office manager. Hello Becca, welcome to Shangri-La…working with those three hunks. Becca and Sam are both attracted to each other, and the chemistry is off the wall right from the start. Sam wants Becca, but he refuses to mix business with pleasure. Will he fire Becca?

They each have their own issues in their lives with their families. Sam has no intention of falling in love or any commitment. His father was an alcoholic, and never was there for his son. He constantly is asking Sam for money, and out of the blue, he comes to live with Sam in Lucky Harbor. Sam’s father Mark, is trying to turn over a new leaf, and take more care of himself and pay more attention to his son. It is Becca, who befriends Sam’s father and helps him take hold of his life.

Becca though vivacious, bubbly and a very confident person, suffers from anxiety attacks, especially related to playing the piano in public. Becca and her younger brother were highly touted as upcoming pianists, but Becca always had to watch over him. Finally, she gave up her career, as she would always get her anxiety attacks before the concerts, and ran away.

Shalvis does a wonderful job creating characters with real issues, but does not let it interfere with the story. It becomes part of their background, and it is so beautifully done. Will Sam allow himself to fall in love with Becca? Will Becca get past her anxiety attacks? Do Sam and Becca have a future together? Is there a chance that Cole or Tanner are available for us? 🙂

This was such a fun delightful romance, and I loved Sam and Becca. Sam was so swoonworthy, and so sweet to Becca. She was the perfect person for Sam, as he was serious, and quiet, while Becca was savvy, outgoing and a joy all the way through.

You can’t go wrong with any book by Jill Shalvis, and this series is great. The next two books are expected to belong to Cole and Tanner, and I will be there anxiously awaiting those stories. It’s In His Kiss was a fun, heartwarming, sexy book, that takes place in a small town where everyone knows each other.

Tell Me Something Good by Jamie Wesley – a Review

Tell Me Something GoodAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
Two radio show hosts. One show. Who will come out on top?

In a moment of restlessness, Tate Grayson sold his multimillion-dollar company and spun his love of sports into a radio talk show. Life, and love, is too short to take seriously—a fact he enjoys rubbing in uptight radio host Noelle Butler’s face.

After the death of her parents, a tragedy she blamed on herself, Noelle vowed to live a controlled, focused life. Now a psychologist, she channels her need for connection into her radio show. But when the arrogant sportscaster next door tells listeners men shouldn’t get married, sHe’s all too happy to yank the silver spoon out of his overprivileged mouth.

Their heated on-air arguments are a hit, but when the station director forces them to do a joint show for two weeks, Tate and Noelle object. They can’t stand each other, despite the attraction sizzling beneath every interaction. But if they can’t pull the struggling radio station back from the brink, they’ll lose their jobs. Or worse, their hearts.

Review:

Tell Me Something Good by Jamie Wesley is an adult contemporary romance. When I was requested to read this book, I had never heard of Jamie Wesley and I was totally surprised how much I loved the book, and how well written it was.

This is a story of two radio show hosts who would never call themselves friends. They are different like night and day….totally opposites.

Our heroine is Noelle Butler, she is a psychologist, who hosts a radio talk show giving advice to those who have problems with love and relationships. Tate Grayson is our hero, who hosts a show all about sports. Noelle believes in love, and she tries to bring couples together. Noelle keeps a business like appearance, wearing suits and always with her hair in place. She is the ultimate professional. Tate is the opposite, totally laid back, casually dressed and believes with all his heart that athletes’ should never ever get married. Just go out and have fun, which is what Tate does himself, with no shortage of woman. Needless to say, these two do not get along.

The manager of the station decides after hearing them antagonize each other on the radio to put them together for two hours a day, in between their own shows. They both dread working together, but they have no choice but to try to put aside their differences and work together.

One of things that I loved about the book was that this was not instant love. Many romances have the couple meet and fall in love almost at the start, but not the case here. There was a lot of humor in the story, when Tate tries to teach Noelle about sports. Noelle tries to be patient and show Tate that relationships and love is worth fighting for. It was so great to watch their defenses slowly begin to crumble. They began to learn about each other, their backgrounds that lead to their choices, and the start of a friendship, which would eventually lead to love. Their chemistry together was apparent as they worked together, and it turned out to be a very sexy sensual romance.

Jamie Wesley did a fabulous job bringing these two together and allowing us to experience the fun of watching them discover each other, slowly falling in love. Very well done. I totally recommend that you read Tell Me Something Good.

Description:
Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her.

While police suspect Jeff of “instant divorce,” Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won’t even tell her his name. She’s determined to escape him, and willing to take any risks necessary to survive.

Unexpectedly, however, the two have a dangerous encounter with people who adhere to a code of justice all their own. At the center of the dispute is a desperate young woman whom Emory can’t turn her back on, even if it means breaking the law.

As her husband’s deception is revealed, and the FBI closes in on her captor, Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is, in fact, her rescuer.

Review:
Mean Streak by Sandra Brown is another one of her wonderful romance thrillers. I have read a lot of Sandra Brown over the years, but it has been awhile. I am happy to say she still knows how to knock them out.

Dr. Emory Charbonneau is our heroine, and I really liked her. She is a pediatrician, marathon runner, who is well liked and respected in her business. In preparation for a marathon, Emory goes to the North Carolina mountains in the cold winter, to take a difficult 20 mile hike.   While on the run, something happens and she blacks out. She awakes in a cabin, with a strange man treating her for a concussion. She doesn’t remember if she fell, but her head is bloody. The stranger does his best to take care of Emory, but he refuses to tell her his name, nor anything about him. He claims he has no phone, and the weather outside is treacherous, therefore she cannot leave in her condition. At first she is scared, wondering if he will hurt her, and does attempt to leave a few times. She is in no condition to move with her concussion.

The mystery man despite his unwillingness to reveal anything about himself, is very kind and gentle with her. It takes a little time for Emory to trust him, and she still worries that he is keeping her there against her wishes, using the guise of the snow and icy conditions. The question remains for us to wonder is he dangerous, with ulterior motives to keep her in the cabin or is he truly her rescuer?

Emory’s husband Jeff, goes to North Carolina to search for her, when she does not come home in a couple of days. The police become involved looking for the missing Emory. As the detectives search, they find themselves becoming suspicious of the husband, whom is having an affair with Emory’s best friend, and is also angry that his wife will not support a drug product he is pushing to help his career. The police also know that Emory inherited a lot of money from her deceased parents, and the husband becomes a major suspect.

What follows is a very exciting suspenseful adventure, with a few stories somewhat related going on at the same time. Emory & her mystery man; Jeff and his mistress; and the local police. There is also an FBI agent who is trying to find someone, from a case years before. All these pieces will eventually tie in, as the story has so many twists and turns from the start to the end. We know that Jeff did not kill Emory, as she is alive at the cabin. But was he responsible for attacking her on the mountains? Who is this mystery man, and why does he hide his identity?

Throughout her recovery, Emory finds herself slowly becoming attracted to this man she knows is kind and nurturing. The tension escalates when two wild crazy neighbors come to ask for help. When Emory finally is able to get to town, more complications arise, and she once again finds herself in danger. This is a very exciting adventure that you cannot put down, as you will miss something important. I did enjoy this budding romance between Emory and her mystery man, as she learns to trust her feelings about him. What is the true story behind him?

The ending was a wild climax filled with surprises. Sandra Brown once again gives us a wonderful romance thriller that I totally recommend that you read.

Interview white:black

Sandra BrownTRC: Hi Sandra and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of MEAN STREAK. We would like to start with some background information for anyone who does not know you. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Sandra: I’ve written over seventy-five books. Sixty-four of them have become New York Times bestsellers. I’m a native Texan. I’ve been married a LONG time to Michael Brown, a video producer and co-host of the TV show Corvette Nation on the Velocity channel. We have a daughter, a son, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and four grandsons. I love my job!

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Sandra: As far back as I can remember my mother was either telling my sisters (four of them) and me stories, or she was reading aloud to us. I developed the habit of reading early in life. Books were my favorite toy. Daddy was an editorial writer for the newspaper, so I suppose I inherited a bit of talent for putting words together. That ability and Mother’s love of stories put me on the path to writing.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Sandra: I watch a lot of the dramatic series on TV. So many are so good! I love movies. I READ. Every day. For hours. I like to make flower arrangements. I’m also very social, and love to get together with friends and/or family. (But I’m not a cook.)

TRC: Is there any profession that you would have liked to enter but never had the opportunity?

Sandra: Growing up I wanted to be a professional dancer. My knees had a different plan! As mentioned above I love flower arranging. Probably if I wasn’t a writer, I’d be a designer of some kind. Interiors. Elaborate floral designs. Like that.

Mean StreakTRC: MEAN STREAK is your latest contemporary release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Sandra: On a remote mountain trail, a mishap befalls the heroine, Emory Charbonneau. Concussed and disoriented, she wakes up to find herself in a cabin, alone with a mysterious man. (Is there any other kind???) He’s secretive about everything including the nature of her mishap and how she came to be there with him. He refuses even to tell her his name. Meanwhile her husband reports her missing. Adventures and misadventures ensue, weather interferes with the search for her, and a dogged FBI agent closes in on Emory’s “captor,” who, it soon becomes apparent, might actually be her “rescuer.”

TRC: Are any of the characters or the premise based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

Sandra: LOL. Nothing nearly this exciting ever happens to me! And while I’m glad I’m not endangered as Emory is, I wouldn’t mind being stranded in the cabin – at least for a while – with the tall, dark and broody hero! I write strictly fiction. Everything that happens is purely make-believe.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular series?

Sandra: MEAN STREAK is a stand alone novel, not one of a series. When writing it, I encountered the challenges I do when writing every book – which are the answers to the questions “What if?” and “What next?” Building in plot twists is always a challenge. Creating protagonists that the reader cares about, and antagonists that make the reader’s skin crawl, are recurring challenges. But those are the same factors that make writing fiction fun. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Sandra: I plunge the characters into “terrible trouble.” I have a fair idea of what they’re doing to do to try to get out of it. I also know some of the obstacles they will encounter that make the terrible even worse. But sometimes both protagonists and antagonists are more resourceful than I am, and they actually give me ideas along the way. Some of my best plot twists I didn’t see coming. They knock me for a loop!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Sandra: Common sense goes a long way with me, both in writing and in reading. While confronting extraordinary circumstances, a character needs to demonstrate extraordinary courage. They need to step out of his/her comfort zone. Otherwise, the reader will give up rooting for them. But I don’t like to doubt a character’s sanity or reason, unless that’s a factor of the plot. I try to make my characters’ actions risky and daring, but also credible. Of a character I either write or read, I don’t want to be thinking: “What a dimwit.”

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Sandra: I write. I don’t know any other cure for a block other than to defy it and keep writing?

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Sandra: Mary Lynn Baxter, to whom I sent my first manuscript – only at her request – to read. She owned a bookstore, and we met at a writers’ conference. She said, “When you’re ready, send me something. I’ll tell you whether or not it’s any good.” A few months later, I took her up on the offer. She liked my manuscript and encouraged an editor at Dell to buy it for the new Candlelight Ecstasy line. That was my first sale. Ms. Baxter is a writer, too. She and I still discuss plots. I also bounce ideas and plot lines off my son, Ryan Brown, who’s published two novels.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Sandra: Become a regular on one of the national morning shows, have a feature film made of one of my books, learn to like exercising.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Sandra: That I’m very insecure.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Sandra: Now that MEAN STREAK is finished, I’m plotting a new novel.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Sandra: Thanks! It’s been fun!

TRC: Thank you Sandra for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on all of your success and the release of MEAN STREAK.
